Wait, what?
And what sort of places do these bottom-of-the-food-chain doctors work in? Places that are really a pit. You find that along with the culture of death go all kinds of other law-breaking: not following good sanitary procedure, giving abortions to women who are not actually pregnant, cheating on taxes, all these kinds of things, misuse of anesthetics so that people die or almost die...

Note tonight's AP story on today's managed outrage:
Conservatives seize on 2007 Obama video
[...]
There's no way you can listen to this speech and not hear it as a deliberately divisive speech that pits Americans against each other and does so largely with racial innuendoes that are very, very clear when you hear the speech," former Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich said on Fox News, which aired segments of the videotaped speech.
At issue Tuesday, one day before the first presidential debate and as Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney trails in polls, was a speech then-candidate Obama made to black clergy at Hampton University, a historically black institution in Virginia. Media outlets including The Associated Press and Fox News covered the remarks at the time.
[...]
Fox News host Sean Hannity said [...]
Conservative pundit Tucker Carlson of The Daily Caller, [...]
I highlighted the only part of the wire story that made it clear that this is a rerun, an attempt to make something out of what didn't work years ago.

I love how Fox's Hannity is saying no one covered this story and the rest of the media hid it while his own freaking network reported on this five years ago. I found it very easy to find on Youtube. All it took was Obama Hampton 2007 and a video from 2007 was the third result. Really if they think there's a conspiracy to cover up this speech? Then I have to say that the right wingers at Daily CAller, Fox, etc are even more stupid than I thought.

Maybe a glimmer of hope that open birtherism is starting to be a little unproductive for the conservative candidate:
Republican Ted Cruz and Democrat Paul Sadler, candidates for U.S. Senate, took turns treating each other like hostile witnesses during a tense hour at WFAA-TV studios in Dallas on Tuesday night.
More often, it was Sadler furiously trying to pin down Cruz on a single yes-or-no question such as whether Cruz believed Obama was a Christian or was born in the Untied States. Sadler would repeatedly cut Cruz off mid-sentence if Cruz didn't begin his response with "yes" or "no." Each time, Cruz survived the interrogation without giving Sadler the information that he wanted. (When pressed by reporters afterward, Cruz refused to say his views on Obama’s religion or place of birth and said he was focused on "the issues.")

RCP silently drops another inconvenient poll midday while keeping others from the same start date. This time it's the FOX poll from 9/24 that had Obama up +5, and again the dropped poll hasn't been superseded by a new one.
I've seen them do this at least half a dozen times or so now, drop inconvenient polls in seeming violation of whatever model they're using at that time, flexibly expanding and contracting the date range to create the smallest spread possible.

For several hours, the Drudge Report has been teasing that a bombshell video will air on Sean Hannity's Fox News show Tuesday night -- some of it while linking to a page for donations on Mitt Romney's site.

An old NYT article on Romney's Campaign Manager & Drudge-whisperer, Matt Rhoades:
[Link: www.nytimes.com...]
The early advantage on their side, in the view of several Republicans, seems to have gone to Mitt Romney, who hired the former Bush political aide who had been the central party’s prime point of contact with Mr. Drudge, Matthew Rhoades. His status was solidified after the 2004 election at a steakhouse dinner in Miami with Mr. Drudge, who for all his renown in politics is a somewhat spectral presence who rarely agrees to meet with political operatives or journalists and who did not respond to requests for an interview for this article.
So important was the Romney camp’s perceived advantage in the eyes of aides to Senator John McCain, Republican of Arizona, that at one point this year they even considered sending an emissary to Miami to build their own relationship with him, two former McCain campaign officials said. (Mr. Drudge ignored the invitation, one of the officials said.)
...
Before Mr. Griffin left politics to work as a military lawyer in 2005, he had a dinner with Mr. Drudge and Mr. Rhoades to solidify Mr. Rhoades’s new place as the main Drudge Report contact for the central party. That dinner was first reported in the book “The Way to Win,” by Mark Halperin and John F. Harris, published last year.
As the Bush political team dispersed among the Republican candidates this year, some of Mr. Rhoades’s former colleagues came to regret his special relationship with Mr. Drudge. Former aides to Mr. McCain said in interviews that they had cursed Mr. Rhoades’s name daily this year as Mr. Drudge ran a series of photographs making Mr. McCain look old and other items, like one wrongly raising the possibility that a bump he took to the head in Iraq was cancer.

That's great news. As far as the narcolepsy goes, you could always take up methamphetamine. You only have to worry about blowing a hole in your aorta the first few times you do it...then you figure out how much your body can handle...for a while.
Seriously, if the hours suck, it's not the job for you. Call center sounds kind of entry-level anyway. You've been in the working world for a good decade now. Apply UP...don't go for lateral positions. Or sell yourself as a "senior" level sales-critter. Get team lead for two or three years, then move into a management role...that's where you'll be happiest.
And don't start taking meth. Sure, you'll be good for four or five days, but then you'll fall asleep in the middle of the freeway, and trust me, that's not good.

The 7-Eleven chain of stores is running a fourth "7-Election" campaign to predict the winner of the 2012 presidential election. While the method - having customers select either a red Romney or blue Obama cup for their coffee - is decidedly unscientific, the results in previous installments have closely mirrored those of the last two elections, and accurately predicted the winner in all three.
It should be noted that their sales data has been extremely accurate regarding how the election turns out - the percentage-point differentials between their coffee cup sales to the actual election numbers has matched almost exactly.
Current sales totals - broken down by state, as well as individual cities is here - and it's not a pretty picture at all for the Romney campaign:

I think the boat props are the real threat. It was weird to see the young manatee in the Disney tank, because it didn't have any scars. The kids each had an 'adopted' manatee, I remember Brutus.

I was boating on the Peace River once and saw one that was dead after being hit by a prop. Not sure where in the river it was hit but the entire river is pretty much a no wake zone. Although it was connected to Charlotte Harbor.

TALLAHASSEE — In a unique case followed closely by immigration experts, the Florida Supreme Court will consider whether an undocumented immigrant can practice law in Florida.
Jose Godinez-Samperio, 26, of Tampa is the undocumented child of immigrants and a "dreamer," in the jargon of the DREAM Act. His story puts a vivid human face on the ambiguity of U.S. immigration policy.

...giving abortions to women who are not actually pregnant...
I've asked my derp translator to explain this to me. (I have relatives who are still drinking the Republican Kool-aid). There is a paranoid belief that if a woman goes to Planned Parenthood with a pregnancy scare, but she is not actually pregnant, that the doctors at Planned Parenthood will purposely render the woman sterile and call it "an abortion." It's all part of their secret agenda of eugenics and destroying the family, you see.
I'm not sure which is worse, thinking that you can perform an abortion on a woman that is not pregnant or thinking that you can render a woman sterile in a procedure that mimics an abortion.
209 | sagehen Wed, Oct 3, 2012 5:00:21am |
"abortions to women who are not actually pregnant"...
When a woman has a miscarriage, she probably needs a D&C for her aftercare, which procedure is exactly the same as the procedure for a 1st trimester abortion.
Some abortions (but not all of them) are D&C's; some D&C's (but not all of them) are abortions.

Nope. AA got its start in the Kennedy Administration, via several Executive Orders, then was codified by Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. What the Nixon Administration did (via a revision to the Philadelphia Plan) was set it up as a mandate for groups doing business with the federal government.

That's a real good one. There's a well-known beach in Venice where they wash up since the same strata we were scraping in the Peace River is being eroded out by the sea right there. And they find the larger teeth in such in the quarries around there as well.
(We were staying in Venice specifically to go walk that beach a few times. Besides fossil shark teeth we also found a few "current" ones. I still have a box with some teeth and scallop shells sitting somewhere in the apartment.)
Also had a really, really, good lunch that day at a crab shack down near Port Charlotte. Group having lunch next to us included Sam Shields father (or the business partner of his father, I forget which.) It was right after the Super Bowl and the man had a Shields jersey on.

Report: Cyber attackers disrupt Internet in Iran
DUBAI - Cyber attackers have targeted Iranian infrastructure and communications companies, disrupting the Internet across the country, a state official was quoted as saying on Wednesday.
Iran, the world's No. 5 oil exporter, has tightened cyber security since its uranium enrichment centrifuges were hit in 2010 by the Stuxnet computer worm, which Tehran believes was planted by arch-adversaries Israel or the United States.
"Yesterday we had a heavy attack against the country's infrastructure and communications companies which has forced us to limit the Internet," Mehdi Akhavan Behabadi, secretary of the High Council of Cyberspace, told the Iranian Labour News Agency.
"Presently we have constant cyber attacks in the country. Yesterday an attack with a traffic of several gigabytes hit the Internet infrastructure, which caused an unwanted slowness in the country's Internet," he said.

Thank you for the correction. My niece was disappointed since there weren't any cuttlefish there at the time. (Though a few months later she saw some while in Malaysia - both in the zoo/aquarium in KL, and some in the wild while snorkeling.)
Trying to locate the crab place - it was along US17 north of Port Charlotte. Which probably is not that informative.

Report: Cyber attackers disrupt Internet in Iran
Heh.
some positive signs things are working
Iranian police clash with protesters over currency plunge
"Everyone wants to buy dollars and it's clear there's a bit of a bank run," said a Western diplomat based in Tehran.
"Ahmadinejad's announcement of using police against exchangers and speculators didn't help at all. Now people are even more worried."
...
A shopkeeper who sells household goods there told Reuters that the instability of the rial was preventing merchants from quoting accurate prices.
I imagine the internet outage contributes to that. Nobody's sure what the exchange rate between rials and dollars might be.

Websites providing rates for the rial stopped updating on Tuesday, and Dubai money changers said they were not selling the rial because they had lost contact with their Tehran counterparts.

I don't think we did. Then again we didn't just cut back north on I-75 but instead took the more built up coastal road. My brother was looking for a tidal mud flat in order to get some samples. (Driving around with a geologist is an experience. You stop and look at what others would consider mundane or odd things.) I do wonder what airport security thought when he went through with a bag full of Zip-locks full of mud.
He also remarked after the Malaysia trip that boxes of rock samples confuse US Customs officials.

Not to mention legacy. Having piles of money makes you a footnote at best since the robber barons of the 19th century get the press in history books for money making and profligate living. So you have to leave your footprint elsewhere and politics is the most obvious place.

It is just a matter of time before they begin to stream across the border...
Dozens of Syrians approach Golan border; tourists evacuated
The IDF evacuated tourists from the top of Mount Hermon Wednesday afternoon, after sighting dozens of possibly armed Syrians approaching the border in the Golan Heights.
The IDF said the suspects did not infiltrate the border into Israel. It was not clear whether they were armed.
Last week, mortar shells fired by the Syrian army strayed into Israel, striking northern Israeli farmlands.
The shells landed harmlessly in open fields, but exploded a short time after farmers were in the area.
The mortar shells were "aimed at villages inside Syria and are part of the internal, ongoing conflict in Syria," said the IDF Spokesman's Office following the incident.
The IDF also warned that "fire from Syria leaking into Israel will not be accepted."
It was the second time in as many months that Syrian shells strayed across the border into Israel.
Since al-Qaeda is fighting along side the opposition forces the danger is there for these terrorists to start a conflict with the Israelis along that border.

Good news! Romney won't try to bog us down in specifics, which has been one of his problems recently (National Review).
The Romney-Ryan campaign has been getting wonky this month, with Paul Ryan holding town-hall meetings and clicking through PowerPoint slides in swing states. Romney, a self-professed policy guy, also enjoys getting into the weeds on health care and economics. But his time will be limited in Denver, and part of the debate prep has revolved around picking and choosing which data points to employ.

Wary of Israel, Iran Is Said to Err in Strikes
The Iranian military was so apprehensive about the threat of an Israeli airstrike on its nuclear installations in 2007 and 2008 that it mistakenly fired on civilian airliners and, in one instance, on one of its own military aircraft, according to classified American intelligence reports.
The civilian planes were fired on by surface-to-air missiles and antiaircraft batteries and intercepted by Iranian fighter jets.
“Iranian air defense units have taken inappropriate actions dozens of times, including firing antiaircraft artillery and scrambling aircraft against unidentified or misidentified targets,” noted a heavily classified Pentagon intelligence report, which added that the Iranian military’s communications were so inadequate and its training deficiencies so significant that “misidentification of aircraft will continue.”
...The combination of heightened vigilance and poor command and control led to series of mistakes, according to a highly classified 2008 Pentagon report on “Operational Mishaps by Air Defense Units.”
In June 2007, the report noted, a Revolutionary Guards air defense unit fired a TOR-M1 surface-to-air missile at a civilian airliner. In May 2008, an antiaircraft battery fired on an Iranian reconnaissance drone and a civilian airliner. That same month, an antiaircraft battery fired on an Iranian F-14 fighter jet.

Having been up along the Golan Heights, including this past March, I can tell you that any attempts at infiltrating the DMZ with Israel will be detected rather easily; the IDF posts along Mt Hermon allow an unparalleled view into Syria (and most of the Heights afford views that on a clear day can take you straight into Damascus). It's why the Golan is such a strategic location.
The reports all seem to indicate that the fire isn't directed at Israel, but misfires from the ongoing civil war. While AQ or Hizbullah might try to take advantage of that situation by purposefully attacking Israeli targets, the IDF is well prepared at this point for such an attempt. The UN, which patrols the DMZ also is aware of the situation, and they're also likely to come under fire from Hizbullah/AQ in those potential scenarios.
Israel will do what it must to protect itself, but they're just as curious as everyone else what Assad's doing and whether the rebels can oust him.
Meanwhile, Assad's claiming to have freed up another 30,000 troops to go and crush the rebels. That's 10% of the nominal size of the military, which is a huge commitment of additional forces, but a variable missing is just how many are in the fight currently, and how many have defected or fled. The 30,000 additional troops Assad claims to now be using may be his last ditch effort to crush the rebels. Seeing as their air force/helicopter assaults haven't worked to break the back of the rebel stronghold on significant portions of the country and have led to heavy fighting in and around Aleppo and Damascus, this could be Assad's last option before considering other means or actions.

Those troops are mostly Alawite militia, recruited due to their perceived loyalty to the regime. Their mission seems to be the resupply of army bases that are presently besieged by the rebels. If Assad can get those forces back in the fight he's got a chance. If his militia fail to lift enough of the sieges, that his regime is doomed.

MY first culinary exposure to odd animal parts was in the basement kitchen of my paternal grandfather, Tom.
The kitchen of the apartment he shared with my grandmother in Buffalo was fine for eating, not for the odors that came with cooking. So Tom, whose idea of recreation was to cook, installed a Hotpoint gas stove and refrigerator in the laundry room downstairs.
We grilled baby lambs’ heads seasoned with lemon and oregano. We simmered tripe in tomatoes that he grew and canned every summer. We roasted beef hearts, deep-fried calves’ brains and sautéed chicken gizzards. And he cooked calves’ liver rare at a time when everyone else in the family thought it had to come out shoe-leather well done.
Sometimes he poured me a small glass of the homemade wine he served young from barrels in the “cave” (his tool room).

Shocka! Ayn Rand has been proven wrong. Again.
Ayn Rand vs. the Pygmies: Did human evolution favor individualists or altruists?
Ultimately, Rand was searching for the origin of John Galt in the pages of human nature. But was she right? Are we rational egotists trapped in a net of social obligations? Or are we an innately social species for whom altruism was integral to our success on this planet? There was only one place she could look: the Pleistocene.
The Pleistocene epoch, from 2.6 million to 11,700 years ago, was a formative time in our species’ development. The first members of the genus Homo began to walk the great savannas of Africa at the beginning of this epoch. In a little more than 2 million years, we went from loose aggregations of bonobo-like bipeds, traveling upright between patches of forest, to highly integrated societies made up of multiple families and clans. By studying the archaeological record as well as modern-day hunter-gatherers, evolutionary scientists have been constructing a record of how our early human ancestors made this journey. It is clear that John Galt was not present in our ancestral family tree.

District considers 'trash-cams' at school cafeterias
TAVARES, Fla. - Lake County School Board officials are considering attaching cameras to school cafeteria trash cans to study what students are tossing after officials found that most of the vegetables on the school menu end up in the trash can.
New federal laws require students to take a healthy produce at lunchtime, but last year in Lake County, students tossed $75,000 worth of produce in the garbage.
"It's a big issue, and it's very hard to get our hands around it," said School Board member Todd Howard, who suggested "trash-cams." "They have to take (the vegetable), and then it ends up in the trash can, and that's a waste of taxpayer money. It's also not giving students the nutrition that they need."
They serve food that kids don't like and they are surprised it's ending up in the trash can? LOL!

Post a link to this story on Romania's forced birth policy:
Do Republicans want America to be like Romania in the 1960's-1980's?
Celibacy was also not acceptable. Anyone that remained childless, even if they were unmarried and over the age of 25, was required to pay a "celibacy tax" which was a huge burden for the many Romanians living in poverty. It was cheaper to pop out a few kids.
...
Women began to turn to illegal and dangerous abortion methods because they could not afford to keep having children. Because of this the maternal mortality rate went through the roof. In 1989 the recorded number of women that died during pregnancy or childbirth was 169, 10 times higher than the recorded number of any European country. 89% of those deaths were abortion related.
Ask him if that's "moral" or "prolife" in his book.

You're right; it's not an uncommon trait for people to be warm around those they truly love.
That is much different from running for President and causally dismissing a huge chunk of your fellow citizens as lazy moochers. I don't expect him to hug everybody, but the guy has a huge empathy problem, exacerbated by the fact he was born into a massive amount of wealth.

Oh good. Now I have the perfect excuse to post this Jon Stewart piece, utterly trashing the idiotic rightwing response to school-lunch-gate:
Jon Stewart Gets to the Bottom of What's Wrong with School Lunches
Students are protesting their lunches. What's exactly the problem? Jon Stewart looked into it last night on The Daily Show. Well, the food under new health guidelines tastes bad. Stewart jokes, "News flash! Extry extry! School lunches suck!" And students are still hungry after they eat it. "So you hate the food and you want more of it."
But wait, is the government really restricting the amount of food? It's not all foods. Students can get seconds of fruits and vegetables. So why are the kids still hungry? Apparently twice as many students are throwing out their lunches. "Hmm, now I am obviously not an nutritionist or an educator," Stewart says, "but I think if these kids are hungry, I guess my solution would be...eat your motherf**kin lunch!"
Video of the segment is at the link.

Fox News psychiatrist: It’s ‘way normal’ to hoard ‘enormous cache’ of weapons because of Iran
A member of the Fox News Medical A-Team on Wednesday insisted it was “way normal” to stockpile personal weapons because Iran had a nuclear program — and, in fact, the people who were not hoarding survival gear might be the “crazy ones.”
During a segment titled “Normal or Nuts?,” a viewer asked Dr. Keith Ablow if they were “nuts” to have “amassed years of food, fuel, generators, outdoor survival gear & an enormous cache of defensive ordinance.”
“Way normal!” Ablow insisted. “Because how can this guy be crazy when the Iranians are close to getting a nuclear weapon? It may be that the rest of us who aren’t amassing survival gear are the crazy ones.”
“I say, check the ammunition, make sure it’s live because these are dark days potentially,” he added. “So, not delusional, simply seeing reality.”
Because of Iran? Riiiiight. Sure.

During my campaign for governor, I decided to spend a day every few weeks doing the jobs of other people in Massachusetts. Among other jobs, I cooked sausages at Fenway Park, worked on asphalt paving crew, stacked bales of hay on a farm, volunteered in an emergency room, served food at a nursing home, and worked as a child-care assistant. I’m often asked which was the hardest job – it’s child care, by a mile.
One day I gathered trash as a garbage collector. I stood on that little platform at the back of the truck, holding on as the driver navigated his way through the narrow streets of Boston. As we pulled up to traffic lights, I noticed that the shoppers and businesspeople who were standing only a few feet from me didn’t even see me. It was as if I was invisible. Perhaps it was because a lot of us don’t think garbage men are worthy of notice; I disagree – anyone who works that hard deserves our respect. – I wasn’t a particularly good garbage collector: at one point, after filling the trough at the back of the truck, I pulled the wrong hydraulic lever. Instead of pushing the load into the truck, I dumped it onto the street. Maybe the suits didn’t notice me, but the guys at the construction site sure did: “Nice job, Mitt,” they called. “Why don’t you find an easier job?” And then they good-naturedly came down and helped me pick up my mess.

They're harvesting brussels sprouts up the street from where I live...probably about 20 acres of them. Beautiful plants with big leaves, when cut down to the stalk leaving these little knobby towers. I'll pick up a stalk with about 20-30 sprouts on it, set it outside in a bucket of water (like a cut flower), and then pop off 6-8 of them every few days to cook. Stalk will last a few weeks that way. Take them all off and put them in the fridge, and you need to eat them within 4 days.

Tucker Carlson: ‘Throne-Sniffers’ In Media Dismissing Obama Vid As Old News
After a video conservative news outlets hyped as a racially explosive Obama bombshell turned out to be a public and widely covered 2007 speech by the then-Democratic presidential candidate, The Daily Caller co-founder Tucker Carlson took to Fox News to bash the “throne sniffers” in the media who dismiss the story as old news.
“You are seeing now the press, which contains many reflexive defenders of Obama — many throne sniffers who instinctively suck up to power — you are seeing them try to dismiss this as old news,” Carlson said on “Fox and Friends” Wednesday morning.
...
Carlson on Wednesday claimed the original reports of the speech were based on Obama’s prepared remarks, not his more aggressive and ad-libbed delivery.“It’s very revealing of where the press stands in this election,” he said. “They have by and large taken a side and it’s a subversion of what journalism is supposed to be. It’s wrong.”

Court reverses rape conviction because disabled victim didn't prove she resisted, demands evidence of "biting, kicking" thkpr.gs/QPCbHK— ThinkProgress (@thinkprogress) October 3, 2012
This was the victim in question:
n a 4-3 ruling Tuesday afternoon, the Connecticut State Supreme Court overturned the sexual assault conviction of a man who had sex with a woman who “has severe cerebral palsy, has the intellectual functional equivalent of a 3-year-old and cannot verbally communicate.” The Court held that, because Connecticut statutes define physical incapacity for the purpose of sexual assault as “unconscious or for any other reason. . . physically unable to communicate unwillingness to an act,” the defendant could not be convicted if there was any chance that the victim could have communicated her lack of consent. Since the victim in this case was capable of “biting, kicking, scratching, screeching, groaning or gesturing,” the Court ruled that that victim could have communicated lack of consent despite her serious mental deficiencies."
So despite the fact that she's severely disabled and unable to communicate, AND has the mental capacity of a 3-year old, meaning she wouldn't have understood what was happening to her, somehow her rape wasn't legitimate because she didn't bite or kick or fight back enough?
What. The. FUCK.

Pelosi Attacks Republicans For Withholding Embassy Security Funding
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi on Tuesday shot back at Republicans criticizing the Obama administration after the fallout of the Libya Consulate attacks, pointing out that they withheld hundreds of millions of dollars the State Department had asked for last year for embassy security and construction.
House Republicans wrote to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton suggesting that the Obama administration was negligent in providing security for the consulate in Benghazi where four U.S. diplomats were killed in an attack on Sept. 11 and asked Clinton for more information. Noting that the investigation into what happened is still ongoing, Pelosi, in an interview with CNN, asked, “how can you ask the secretary to come before the information is known?”
The Minority Leader then pointed out that it was Republicans who may have some responsibility in the matter, as they turned down the administration’s request for nearly $300 million for embassy security:
...
CAP senior fellow and budget expert Scott Lilly noted last month that in the last two years, Congress has cut the Obama administration’s request for funding to increase diplomatic staffing and boost embassy security:

Is there any place online that gives a good explanation for the brief gas price plunge in 2008, which all the wingnuts are now claiming was the "normal" price of gas before Obama was elected?
Commodities: U.S. light crude oil for November delivery settled down $5.43 to $66.75 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, a 16-month low.
Oil prices have been dropping since crude peaked at an all-time high of $147.27 a barrel on July 11. But the decline has been a mix of speculators leaving the market and investors betting that a slowing global economy means weaker oil demand. As a result, the falling oil prices haven't helped stock investor sentiment much.
Gasoline prices fell another 3.1 cents overnight, to a national average of $2.858 a gallon, according to a survey of credit-card activity by motorist group AAA. It was the 35th consecutive day that prices have decreased. During that time, prices have fallen by nearly $1 a gallon.
A variety of oil services, metals and mining shares fell in tune with the drop in commodity prices. Dow components Chevron (CVX, Fortune 500), Exxon Mobil (XOM, Fortune 500) and Alcoa (AA, Fortune 500) all tumbled.

So this basically boils down to:
1) Admin asks for funds to help secure embassies etc.
2) Republicans in congress block said funding
3) Embassies attacked, ambassador dead republicans try to hold hearings to play politics with it.
I'd like to say I'm surprised but really, I can't it's the "whocuddaknowd" all over again.

Problem the last – The only impact same-sex marriage will have on your children is if one of them turns out to be gay and cannot get married. What will you do (and I ask this honestly) if one or more of your kids ends up being gay? Will you love them any less? What will your actions speak to them, 15 years from now, when they ask you why they can’t enjoy the same relationship that you and your wife have now? And if your response is “We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it”, well, for a lot of people that bridge is here right now. They’re trying to cross it, but the way is barred, and I will do my best to tear those barricades down any way I can because I believe that we are infringing on the free will of other human beings by denying them their basic right to live free of oppression. I love my daughters for their minds and their personalities, not for who they love as adults. That’s none of my damn business, and I will support them in life no matter who they want to marry.

re: #476 Sheila Broflovski
When all else fails, one extremist calls another extremist who may be slightly less violent a Zionist because he's not carrying out the long term war in the same fashion the other would. SS/DD
It's why you get the PLO factioning and splitting into ever smaller factions, including Fatah (the main and largest), PFLP, PRCs (a combination of violent terrorists from multiple terror groups who want more violence and war against Israel). Hamas and Hizbullah have similar pressures, and there's additional external pressure from their backers in Damascus and Tehran, to try and take the pressure off Assad. That would mean going and instigating actions against Israel (which would get more prominent coverage in international media than an ongoing civil war in Syria). Assad must be hoping something takes his ongoing brutality off the front pages - and this may be one of the reasons that report was being floated.
But there is a kernel of truth to what Tehran says. Palestinian leaders have and continue to sacrifice their fellow Palestinians for their own personal gain. The same goes to the other Middle Eastern countries (including Iran) for 65 years and counting. They use the suffering of Palestinians in refugee camps to further their own agendas rather than seek peace with Israel.
Hamas is in a curious and dangerous position - one that Israel could potentially exploit. Hamas has long been backed by Assad and Iran. With the ongoing fallout from the Syrian civil war, Hamas leaders who have openly questioned the civil war and Assad's methods, are opening up an opportunity for someone else to step in and fund their activities - Saudi Arabia, Gulf States, Egypt, etc. The switch could come with significant strings, including changing their stance on Israel. Just as money was used as bait to get Arafat to come to the table on Oslo, a new funding stream for Hamas in Gaza could work to the benefit of Palestinians and the peace process at large. Hamas lacks for funds and whatever funds do come in - only a fraction gets seen by the Palestinians living in Gaza. The situation is significantly better in the West Bank where the PA has civil administrative control and can disburse international funds. So, it's a remote chance, but it's better than the ongoing status quo for the Palestinians.

In my house they'd starve. I guess I'm just too much of a bitch. I hate to cook, so it's eat what I cook, make your own, or starve.
The inside joke in my family is to complain about food and then say "but good mind you!"
To explain:
My mother did co-op while in college. Few terms of classes and then a term or so spent working a job somewhere. Once such job term was working at a camp out in California where the counselors did their own cooking.
An agreement was reached early on was that anyone bitching about the food got to inherit the cooking job to see if they could do better. It resulted in "this food is blah blah blah, but good mind you!" Thus a family joke with more than 50 years of history is born.

re: #361 Dark_Falcon
But Mitt doesn't want to talk about what he did as governor.

re: #464 Lidane
Prosecutors had to show that the victim was physically helpless, and the defendant claimed that they had not met that burden.
It would seem to me that someone who is mentally incapacitated and has the functional intelligence of a 3 year old would be physically helpless to understand what was going on.
Criminal; Sexual Assault; Whether State Presented Sufficient Evidence that Disabled Complainant was Physically Helpless as Defined by General Statutes § 53a-65 (6). The defendant was convicted of attempted sexual assault in the second degree in violation of General Statutes §§ 53a-49 (a) and 53a-71 (3) and sexual assault in the fourth degree in violation of General Statutes (Rev. to 2005) § 53a-73a (a) (1) (C) in connection with allegations that he sexually assaulted a twenty-five year old woman with significant disabilities. She has cerebral palsy, mental retardation and hydrocephalus. Both crimes require the state to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the alleged victim was "physically helpless" as defined by General Statutes § 53a-65 (6); that is, that the victim was "unconscious or for any other reason [was] physically unable to communicate unwillingness to an act." The defendant appealed, claiming that his convictions should be overturned because the state had not met its burden of proving that the complainant was physically helpless. The Appellate Court (118 Conn. App. 43) noted that, while the complainant's disabilities rendered her unable to communicate verbally, she could communicate by gesturing and vocalizing and through the use of a communication board, and that witnesses testified that she could indicate her displeasure by means of gestures, physical aggression - including biting, kicking and scratching - and by making screeching and groaning sounds. The court concluded that, given the uncontradicted evidence presented at trial that the complainant could communicate using these nonverbal methods and the state's failure to show that she was unable to use such forms of communication at the time of the alleged assault, no reasonable jury could have concluded that she was physically helpless at the time of the assault. The Appellate Court accordingly reversed the judgment and remanded with direction to render judgment of not guilty. The Supreme Court granted the state's petition for certification to appeal and will consider whether the Appellate Court improperly substituted its judgment for that of the jury when it determined that the evidence was insufficient to prove that the complainant was physically helpless as defined by § 53a-65 (6).
BTW, procedurally, TP got this wrong. The Appellate Court overturned the trial court verdict as wrong, and found that the prosecutors didn't meet their burden of proof. The state Supreme Court has upheld the lower court's ruling after the prosecutors appealed.
Either way though, the appellate and supreme court got it wrong, and it points out a problem with how the law is written or prosecutors presented the case.

WASHINGTON, Oct 2 (Reuters) - U.S. officials in Washington denied repeated requests from Americans in Libya for more security at the U.S. mission in Benghazi before last month's attack that killed four Americans there, two Republican lawmakers said on Tuesday.
U.S. Representatives Darrell Issa and Jason Chaffetz wrote a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton demanding details of the requests for more security - which they said were made amid numerous attacks on Westerners in Libya in recent months.
They said the House of Representatives Oversight and Government Reform Committee will hold an Oct. 10 hearing on the security situation leading up to the Benghazi attack on Sept. 11.
Clinton responded later on Tuesday with a letter to the lawmakers saying the State Department would collaborate with the committee.
The truth will come out during the hearings.

The latest WSJ/NBC poll read respondents his comments and found 45 percent felt more negatively towards Romney afterwards versus only 23 percent who felt more positive about him. Even worse, the 12 percent slice of voters NBC defines as “up for grabs” had the strongest reaction. Just 10 percent approved of the remarks versus a whopping 49 percent who said the comments diminished their opinion of Romney.
