re: #546 garzooma

If you’re referring to the Twitter threads, I think I saw them. I have no reason to doubt the authenticity or veracity, but I’d like something more curated. And I do think it’s odd that “Italian hospitals leaving 70-year-olds to die” isn’t more of a story.

google.com

politico.eu

news.sky.com

Both of the above are EU news agencies. Neither state “leaving 70 year olds to die” just a little more In an interview that went viral after it was published in the Italian daily Corriere della Sera Monday, Christian Salaroli, an anesthesiologist from a hospital in Bergamo, recounted scenes of wartime triage, where old patients have to be left by the wayside. “The choice is made inside of an emergency room used for mass events, where only COVID-19 patients enter. If a person is between 80 and 95 and has severe respiratory failure, he probably won’t make it.”

The principle of “first come, first served” has been abandoned, said Mario Riccio, an anesthesiologist who works at a hospital in Cremona.

re: #8 Yeah Sure WhatEVs

Yes, things are definitely not looking good in Italy: (via BBC):

Italian medical chief dies after contracting virus

The head of the medical association in the northern Italian province of Varese, Roberto Stella, 67, has died of respiratory failure after contracting coronavirus.

He had been practising medicine at an outpatient clinic in Busto Arsizio, north-west of Milan, and Italian reports say he and a colleague were infected at the weekend.

Varese is in the Lombardy region, which has been at the centre of Italy’s coronavirus outbreak.

A hollow Gandalfian voice says, VOTE, you fools!  Mar 11, 2020 • 11:03:23am

My beautiful post was CL’ed downstairs:

So I was walking home from the gym (pretty empty, but all classes that can be taught remotely are being taught remotely), and as I was walking through the empty campus (see above), I had a conversation with a woman who was walking her unemployed therapy dog (hospital visits cancelled for now).

The topic of the election came up and she said she was so disappointed about Bernie’s losing. (OT: when I started to type “Bernie,” my autofill suggested “BernieDolts.”)

“I’m not,” I said. He has no coattails and he can’t network. We need the House and Senate as well as the White House.”

And

She

Didn’t

Argue.

She agreed with me that she’d vote for a cinderblock with a “D” on it this fall (h/t whichever lizard said that first here).

This is the attitude I keep seeing among Berners who aren’t employed as public assholes, and it makes me more and more hopeful about the next election.

But don’t get complacent.

WHO officially declares covid19 a global pandemic.

Cuomo is currently holding a presser. More cases reported. More big public events being cancelled, delayed, deferred.

A decision on the St. Patrick’s Day parade in NYC will be made later today (expect a cancellation). Cuomo also talks about having more private entities able to test to help ramp up the testing and results but they’re still lagging what’s needed.

I’m staggered to think that Trump’s approval rating remains steady at 40%, but that’s the crazy baseline/bottom. It’s also his ceiling.

Actually, I also track that, and it’s been dropping bit by bit. I was pretty young when Nader was a thing but I remember Ron Paul’s rise very well. That’s who Bernie is to me. He’s a backbencher who never was interested in joining one of the major parties in a serious way, he’s an ineffective legislator, he’s an old fart who sells his ideas as revolutionary when they’re really just the old fights of hte industrial age. The problem isn’t that Bernie’s a socialist. The problem is Bernie is a socialist stuck in time. And he’s a dipshit when it comes to a key constituency of the party whose nomination he wants.

It makes perfect sense though. The progressive left wants to move forward, and obviously, the establishment is holding things back, to keep its power, maximize its benefits, so lets just destroy it.

Ignoring the fact that the establishment in many cases is:
- Quietly working towards progress
- the group of people who knows how to get things done in a country where not everyone agrees with you.
- Quietly working to hold the fort until progressive ideals become establishment ideals and are easily implemented.

Not that the establishment is ideal.. Just look at the lack of punishment given to the companies/individuals who caused it in the first place… but it’s better than the alternative and maximizes realization of progressive goals in the long term.

re: #59 The Pie Overlord!

Noted health care expert and druggist Rush is claiming covid19 isn’t any more dangerous than the common cold.

Fucker is lying to his listeners.

Seasonal flu is far more deadly than the common cold: 0.1% mortality rate from the flu.
Thus far, the covid19 mortality rate is anywhere from 10-40 times higher (3.4% via WHO figures). And it is easily spread and can linger on surfaces for 2-3 days.

SARS: low transmissibility but 10% mortality rate.
MERS: low transmissibility but 36% mortality rate. (Fauci wrote the article used for those stats).
The common cold? It’s hard to find stats on actual mortality from the common cold but it appears to several magnitudes less than that of the seasonal flu.

I saw a passage in a Reddit thread (LOL I know) where the poster noted that the left always has a romantic relatinship with some anti-establishmentarian, as if it’s in our ID. Going backwards before Bernie, to Stein, Nader, and those teasing the tips of the horshoe with Ron Paul, Perot, going back to Goldwater. Somehow this trait is more prominent on the left. It was an interesting read, I wish I bookmarked it.

The right’s romantic relationship is with the evangelicals (Pat Robertson) and they’ve subsumed into the GOP establishment anything to the right of outright Nazis. (And arguably even them at this point.)

I’d say it’s only a prominent trait of the left because the more outrageous cases have never become normalized into the Democratic Party.

Per Sanders I’ll grant him some grace period to see what he does in relation to Biden and the Democratic Party going forward. Perhaps we’ll see a different set of behaviors rather than a repeat of 2016.

Problem for Bernie is this isn’t 2016, he’s falling much shorter in terms of votes and delegates than he did last go around and there’s less appeal to trying for “party unity” than there was with Hillary on the ticket. So the longer he insists upon fighting this out, the less leverage he has to use at the convention to force concessions.

You know I’ve heard Biden on the stump a lot. He repeatedly talks about the people he wants to bring into office with him with his coattails. I never ever hear Bernie talk about that. Yeah he has some Congressional allies but has Bernie ever shown once that he cares about the Democrats having a majority in Congress? You don’t have to like the Democratic establishment but the Dems in Congress will be playing a role in any possible candidate’s agenda. So why treat them like they’re your enemy. He is more hostile to the Democrats than he is Trump and yeah that makes me very wary of him because I feel like a President Sanders would not give a fuck if the NRCC came after my Congresswoman who has been such an improvement over my previous Republican one.

Part that got left off…no one is saying “70 year olds are left to die”, the reporting is little more finessed, as noted above, but it is still saying that in less explicit terms.

Well, the post I was referring to did say “Italy is currently not providing hospital treatment to COVID-19 cases over 70 years old or with major co-morbidity problems.”

But actually, my main point was that we’re not getting major coverage of the fact that 70-year-olds might not be getting treated. For instance, the top story in the Google link you posted (thanks, BTW) was a Bloomberg story “Virus Spread Pushes Italian Hospitals Toward Breaking Point”, with sub-titles “80% of Lombardy acute-care beds are earmarked for coronavirus” and “Some hospitals suspend other treatments to focus on outbreak”. You have to go to the middle of the article to see “Some doctors have said that they sometimes make the call on who gets treatment based on the age of the patient.” How is that not the main emphasis of any article out there?

The only “plans” floated so far demonstrate the entire thought process of the administration, which is this is not a medical crisis or even an economic one, but a messaging failure that is in need of a PR spin. Donny thinks the markets are responding to the people, who are responding to a “hoax” perpetuated by an adversarial media, so he’s trying to “fix” that by floating yet another big giveaway to the rich as a “tax cut” to the working schlubs whose support he simply needs to maintain until November. And that last bit isn’t a joke, he really did tell Senate Repubs that his “tax cut” would only go until November.

I spent far too much time yesterday in a virtual debate on the mortality rate of COVID-19, pointing to the 3.4% WHO estimate. One person was suggesting that this was “hysteria”, while others were suggesting that epidemiology models were suggesting something closer to 1%. Problem is that Italy’s mortality rate seems to be increasing, while South Korea just reversed its recent trend in the decreasing number of cases. In other words, right now, that 3.4% estimate from the WHO doesn’t seem to be budging.

And then there’s the stats that don’t make it into the morbidity tables for covid19 - like riots in Italian prisons relating to new covid19 procedures that led to 12 dead and dozens escaped.

Italy’s justice minister says 12 prison inmates died of drug overdoses and 16 others escaped during riots at more than two-dozen prisons sparked by new coronavirus containment measures.

The riots on Sunday and Monday broke out after corrections authorities suspended or limited family visits for two weeks to prevent the spread of infections.

While briefing the Italian Parliament on the prison riots, Justice Minister Alfonso Bonafede said the unrest involved some 6,000 prisoners at facilities around the country.

Bonafede confirmed on Wednesday that 16 inmates broke out of a medium-security prison in Foggia and remained at large. The 12 prisoners who died overdosed after breaking into prison infirmaries.

The minister says 40 prison guards were injured.

These are the two graphs everybody needs to see and focus on:

COVID-19 Mortality vs Flu Mortality
Flattening the Curve

Flattening the Curve will save lives. I’m assuming I will get sick. But if I can delay it a few weeks, or even a few months, that might save a life. It could be my wife, my MIL, my mom. Or somebody I don’t know. This is what people need to keep in mind.

Correctamundo. Flattening the curve means that health care delivery systems are maxed out but don’t fail. People with other ailments get the care they need. People are able to get the surgeries they need (electives). People are able to get proper levels of care.

If you get too many cases in too short a time, you break the system, and many more people die, and the recovery from that break will take longer too.

No sarc tags, I see. Maybe because this actually IS how the Trump Administration plans to deal with the coronavirus outbreak?? Nah, it’s:

Step 2. Deal with market flare-ups by promising more money
Step 3. Keep stalling in the hopes that all this goes away in 1-2 months “when it gets warmer”

And

She

Credit should go to Tom Nichols @RadioFreeTom, who has been a very outspoken Trump critic, for originating “I’d vote for a cinderblock with a “D” on it.”

They were probably safer in prison.

Maybe not. Communal facilities. Probably too small a hospital ward. Probably under equipped to deal with serious cases. And probably not able or willing to test everyone effectively.

And this probably holds double in the US system, especially the privatized ones. (And where *if* there was testing done there’d be a huge jackass outcry about prisoners not being worthy of testing and care ahead of regular citizens. Said outcry also being really ignorant that the testing would be helping to protect the guards and other staff there from carrying it out into the general public.)

Just to give you an idea of how fucked up the way Berners are acting right now, I suggest looking through the Fark Politics Tab from the Iowa caucus to now. You could literally separate everything into “Pre-South Carolina” and “Post-South Carolina” in terms of attitude that is on display.

Pre-SC, there’s all this “party unity” and talk about how wrong it is to attack other candidates when we should be “Blue No Matter Who” because any one of the candidates could beat Trump in November. All that talk is only matched by the obvious glee that is seen in threads about how Joe’s candidacy seems to be stalling out and he just needs to quit because “it’s over.”

Post-SC? Salt Mountain. The moment it looks like Joe is no longer out of the race, the Berners drop the masks and start screaming that the DNC is “rigging” the race, that Pete and Amy were “forced” to leave the field, that “the establishment” is out to destroy “progressives,” and all sorts of toxicity towards “moderates.” Oh, and in the past 48 hours, every thread about the primaries is turning into wall-to-wall CTs about Biden’s “cognitive decline.”

Hot weather might be a bad thing for the virus not to mention summer brings added challenges: More travel, people gathering in swimming spots, holiday gatherings (Memorial Day [Which is technically in late spring, but..], July 4, Labor Day).

I’d argue that he won’t even make Memorial Day, what with all the concerts and events being canceled between now and then. It’s hard to argue that it’s “business as usual” when the bread and circuses are put on hold due to plague.

Hi.
The daily coronavirus report from the University of Nebraska Medical Center and the National Quarantine Unit.
nebraskamed.com

A 16-year-old from Northeast Nebraska with existing health conditions was transferred to the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit with COVID-19. His condition is serious.

A 36-year-old woman being treated in the biocontainment unit is in critical condition.

The one American from the Diamond Princess cruise ship who had been treated in the biocontainment unit was transferred Tuesday evening to the National Quarantine Unit.

Testing protocols continue for the other six Americans from the cruise ship and the community health care worker in the quarantine unit.

As the potential for community spread increases, the community is reminded to take precautions. Resources, updates and answers to common questions are available here.

The U.S. has about 1,050 cases and 29 deaths. Worldwide, cases in 118 countries stand at nearly 122,000 cases, with nearly 4,500 deaths

Interesting and very telling that Dr Borysenko refers to “Democrats” and “Bernie supporters” as completely different entities (which, of course, they are).

Yeah, that’s what makes the “DemExit” tag so fucking hilarious, that most of those who are screaming “I’M LEAVING AND NEVER COMING BACK!” don’t look old enough to have voted blue more than 1-2 elections.

“Flattening the Curve” is pretty much my approach. I curtailed going out to “important things only” about a week ago. And I’m now in “vital things only” in terms of that. Already cancelled a trip in early April, and only have three things on my schedule beyond the immediate home through early June of which I am pretty sure cannot be avoided. I have supplies on hand, and think I can get my prescription refills via mail for a few months if necessary as well. (It helps that I am semi-retired and not beholden to having to go to work in an office.)

I have two vacations I’m not cancelling (cruise and brief trip to S. California), although I may modify a bit.

But I won’t be a hermit, and I will go out for election work, which I consider vital. If it kills me, it kills me.

My girlfriend was planning to come on Friday from Düsseldorf, and I was going to drive back up with her on Sunday.

If I go back up with her there that means there is a not-negligible chance of getting stuck in a quarantine zone like in Northern Italy

I’m convinced that most have been “Dems” no further back than the midterm elections. That they voted out of hatred of Trump and because there were progressives like AOC on the ballots in their neighborhoods. Thus the success in ‘18 convinced them that they were a rising power within the party and had influence they could use to boost Bernie to the nomination.

Sure I can. The industry has been dealing with infectious disease since germ theory was invented. They were caught flat-footed, as who among us was not, but the protocols they’ve established now will probably make it safer to cruise than to stay home. re: #216 Targetpractice

One of my favorite things as a sports buff is to reread the fan forum threads of opposing rival after a great collapse. It just shows the ups and downs of fanaticism. I imagine the Fark forums are just like that. The thing I imagine about many Berners like that is they never thought to actively persuade people towards Bernie that may have voted for Clinton last time. And what’s more I think that’s what happened at the grassroots level where they could have benefited most.

240
Jay C  Mar 11, 2020 • 1:00:16pm

BTW, it looks like the equity markets have rallied (minorly) at the end of the trading day: today’s closings look to be around the level of Monday’s (so much for the “rally”), so it’s looking like - for now - there’s a floor (at about last year’s level). But it hardly seems like positive news. Perhaps (at best) slightly-less-negative.
Maybe.

Demanding wide spread testing; acknowledging the numbers; actually implementing a plan; etc., would do far more to calm the market than almost literally everything else he is doing. Fuck, the Costanza approach would get us so much farther.

Everything we’ve seen indicates that Berners never expected to have to make a case for Bernie, but that the dynamics of the primary prior to SC would just lead the party to being forced to accept them as their messiah. It’s like any cult, they genuinely can’t comprehend why anybody who’s outside the ranks doesn’t see him as the one who will lead America out of the darkness and usher in a new era of “democratic socialism.”

Because all indications are that that is exactly what they want, to just cut a check to “employers” courtesy of the taxpayers without any strings attached. They’re seeing this as a crisis they don’t want to go to waste and are looking to structure any “stimulus plan” as yet another massive bailout to “small businesses.”

Joe Biden is that one family elder that all the kids love because he brings them treats whenever he visits, he laughs at all their jokes, and he always has time to play with them when all the other adults are “too busy.” Yeah, as you grow older you realize that he has views and ideas that don’t jibe with your own, but you can write a lot of that off as him being “a product of his generation” instead of being a mean and nasty guy.

Bernie’s the old guy who yelled at you for years to “get off his lawn,” and has a reputation around town as being a “loon” who did a little too much LSD when he was in college “back in the day.” And who your parents warned you not to spend too much time around because he was bound to put “bad ideas” into your head.

Pharmaceutical executives have every incentive to get there quickly— they will be selling the vaccine after all—but thankfully they also know that you can’t break the laws of nature to get there.

Maybe we should be happy. Three years ago, the president declared his skepticism of vaccines and tried to launch an antivaccine task force. Now he suddenly loves vaccines.

But do us a favor, Mr. President. If you want something, start treating science and its principles with respect.

It definitely mattered here. I’m sorry but it’s hard for me to like much about Bernie Sanders the man. And I think Trump will struggle with that too. I’m hoping the Biden campaign has a way to reintroduce him to younger voters. I personally find a lot to admire about him as a person. As I’ve told you all, I stutter too and was in speech therapy. Not really a big deal but I’ve honestly thought about it as I’ve seen people mock him for it more. I expect it from the right. I’m genuinely disappointed to see people do it in the name of the left but I’m realizing their left and my left might be two different things. I’m a liberal. I’m proud of that.

This seems like some sort of logical fallacy to me. Likeability has been a perennial issue in politics. Al Gore and John Kerry were both seen as unlikeable and the fact W whipped them on the “who would you rather have a beer with?” question certainly played a role in his victories.

As a matter of fact, I think the issue of likeability has been raised in basically every presidential election in my memory.

I call Nixon Pandora’s Trump. He’s a lot like Trump and yet he’s not. I’ve read Nixon’s memoirs. Son of an old long haired I am, even I could find empathy for Nixon talking about losing his brothers or respect his intelligence when he recalled the lead up to the entrance into WWII. Trump I can’t think of anyone like him in our history. Trump will get his wish. He will be remembered but not for why he hopes.

Women cannot show any signs of “weakness” if they want to get ahead in the “man’s game” of politics. Since a lot of men only find women “likeable” if they are physically attractive, fawning and compliant, then that can be a problem.

It’s much like how you don’t see a lot of women CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, because whether we want to admit it or not, we’re still very much in the Mad Men mindset that any woman who is successful enough in business or politics to reach the top is “trying too much to be seen as a man.” The only thing that’s changed since those days is they ended the favoritism towards “family men” in favor of “young execs” who are supposed to sacrifice everything to reach the top.

If this somehow blows over well short of current predictions, I will be deeply saddened if the electorate has the memory of a gold fish about it. He is wholly incompetent in every single aspect of the job, and COVID-19 is putting his incompetency into stark relief.

Trump is a perfect representative of his entire party, in putting optics etc. above reality in responding to a crisis. Oh god, I forgot that about Harris. That was so ugly. Looking back on it, a lot of the ugly attacks made on the early drop out candidates were made by Sanders friendly media surrogates. I remember Sirota or maybe it was Elizabeth Bruening or maybe both even accused Beto of taking money from the oil and gas industry. It wasn’t exactly true. Beto took money from those companies the way Bernie does the DoD. He got donations from people who worked at those companies just like Bernie did Defense Department employees. And given Beto was running for Senate and Congress in Texas, yeah not very shocking that someone who works at the oil and gas industry might be making a donation. I definitely think his allies saw threats to Bernie’s claim as the youth candidate. That candidate and even though I gladly voted for him was never gonna be Joe.

When I voted on Super Tuesday, there wasn’t even a GOP primary ballot, just a notification that the Republican candidate would be chosen via convention rather than primary. It’s actually something not new to the GOP here. It’s why I’ve always found when Republicans around here try to act “concerned” about what happened to Bernie in 2016, I laugh.

So, again, when he says “nobody,” he really means he didn’t see it coming 4 weeks ago. Why? Because 4 weeks ago, he was too busy punishing Vindman and others who’d shown “disloyalty” by complying with Congressional subpoenas and doing his “acquittal” victory lap.

Shit, I’m not even a big soccer fan and I know that’s bullshit. The MLS is growing here but the US men’s team. Nah, everyone I know tries to find a cool contender to jump on a bandwagon for since our team isn’t anything to brag about. Now the women’s team. They’re champs. And, when he went through Jumpmaster School, though in his office with personal instruction. Then, having a whole C-130 to himself as he was graded on ‘actions in the aircraft’
The last time I saw General Keane (then with 4 stars) Was in Hungary during an exercise.
He was about to hand out a couple ‘coins’ and noticed I was smoking. Said he didn’t think he could give me a coin since I was smoking. I responded that I was pretty sure I would survive. My company commander looked like he would choke trying to hold back his laugh, while the younger officers and NCO’s appeared to be in complete shock.

So far, Denmark and Norway have not reported any deaths, Sweden just reported its first death, and Germany has but few deaths due to SARS-Cov-2.

Why?

Good question. Part of the reason probably is that there is enough spare capacity to treat the infected, and that people in those countries can get the help they need regardless of any social status.

Italy has a lot of old people - a point pundits are making to explain the number of deaths there - but another statistic about Italy is the stress that nation has been under in dealing with its economy. While it may not be as “socialist” as the northern countries, the health care system in Italy is available to all, AFAIK. I’ve been considering refinancing, and somehow between last week and this week interest rates have increased. Not sure how that happens in the face of a Fed rate cut and general bad market news. Found an article that said rates went up in response to the sudden uptick in demand to refinance or some such. It has risen enough in a week to take it from worthwhile to refinance to not so much.

Trump says “nobody saw this coming 4 weeks ago,” when I just read an article from the end of December about efforts in China to address the growing outbreak.

For Trump the following two statements by him are exact synonyms:

“I didn’t see this coming….”

“Nobody saw this coming….”

How has the “deep state” engaged in “market manipulating”? Simple, they engaged in Operation “Keep Donny Talking.” They didn’t need to spread lies or fan the flames of hysteria, all they had to do was get Donny out in front of the cameras to insist that number of infected would “be down to zero soon” or respond to questions about firing the experts trained to deal with viral outbreaks with “I don’t like people standing around, doing nothing.” Combine that with news that Donny ordered news about the outbreak suppressed or experts muzzled and the markets have plenty of fodder upon which to feed.

498

Remember, the quality of the health care will determine how many deaths there are.

So far in S. Korea the death rate is a bit under 1%. But they are testing many, and their national healthcare is first world.

The availability of care, and the quality, will affect death rates.

Because this is primarily a respiratory problem, the availability of units that can address patients is the key.

WHO’s Pandemic Declaration Came Too Late, Brazil Says

The World Health Organization was too slow in declaring the global coronavirus outbreak a pandemic, complicating authorities’ work to curb the spread of the virus, according to Brazil’s Health Minister Luiz Henrique Mandetta.

The pandemic declaration will allow health agents to direct anyone with symptoms of the illness to a health care unit, whereas before only people arriving from specific locations such as China would receive such treatment, he explained during a meeting with lawmakers in Brazil’s Congress.

“Now, in a manner that is even late, the WHO agrees with the Brazilian assessment that we are facing a pandemic,” Mandetta said, arguing that the world would have fewer cases today had the WHO made that call earlier.

Brazil currently has 52 confirmed cases of coronavirus, and zero fatalities.

Of course. The US right functions exclusively on resentment, nearly all of it both irrational and bigoted. That makes their response to anything depressing easy to predict.

I’ve followed your lead and have been looking at the Diamond Princess. There’s a useful chart that includes it here.
It shows total cases at 696 and deaths at 7, which would be 1%. But it also only shows 325 recovered, so we don’t know the final tally. Moreover, it’s showing Serious/Critical at 32. Depending on how these end up, we could be looking at up to 5%.

Latest update on the May convention we’re scheduled to attend in Germany.

“We realise this is an event to die for, but we don’t want it to be literal.”

The organisers are working from the recommendations of the Swiss health authorities about large gatherings and public transportation. They are also warning those who are coming from afar (as in, I asked about this) that it is difficult to predict what things will look like two months from now, but there is the possibility someone travelling from outside Europe could wind up stranded in a quarantine from an hour to who knows how long.

They are suggesting if you do not have the ability to sustain yourself over a long time in Europe if you’re stranded there, or if you live in an area with an outbreak, or if you have elevated risk, you might want to consider cancelling your reservation. They will refund the full price in the currency you paid for registration (I paid in Swiss Francs).

We’re still considering going: My VA disability would still go into my agricultural bank account, as we found on our trip to Germany and Poland our ATM card works in Europe, and it’s looking like if this virus is going to go round it will be unavoidable. (Being trapped with German health care might be preferable to US healthcare anyway, and CHAMPUS/Tricare will pay.)

In the meantime here, they are gathering in a large crowd for church across the street.

Indeed. The chart I’m looking at (BNO News) shows 18 serious —and none critical, which is another category they break out — so possible 3.5% death rate, if every one of them dies. (And Italy shows another thousand “serious.”)

The fact is, we really don’t know the infection rate (20% for the Diamond Princess, much, much less than 1% for every country on the list, but they’re not finished counting). I’m seeing a lot of what I can only call catastrophising in the absence of information on how they came up with their numbers. (30% to 70% infected? That’s a pretty wide spread, and where did they get the lower bound, to say nothing of the upper?)

World wide, the death rate to confirmed cases is more than 3.5%.
I want to know what the hell Germany is doing. They’re somehow holding the rate down at ~0.16%. And, that’s with 1900 confirmed cases

I made a similar point the other day. Right now Germany shows 1,908 cases but with only 25 recovered. It is possible the age distribution is skewed much younger or that after a month the figures will look very different.

Being the Best-Prepared State for COVID-19 (Goes to Governor Pete Ricketts, R-Ameritrade)

The governor compares preparing for an outbreak of Covid-19 to preparing for a snowstorm.

He does put some good information up (I imagine he didn’t get it from Trump)

Practicing good health habits can also help prevent the spread of coronavirus and other respiratory infections:

Bump elbows rather than shake hands to prevent the transfer of germs.
Stay home if you are sick.
Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
Do not greet people with hugs or kisses.
Wash hands often to protect yourself from germs.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing and then throw the tissue into the trash.
Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
Stay up-to-date on information sent out by your local public health department.

If you travel overseas, be extremely diligent about practicing good hygiene. All international travelers should check the State Department’s website (travel.state.gov) for guidance and updates. Travelers returning to the U.S. should monitor their health closely and immediately self-quarantine and contact a healthcare provider if they develop any symptoms of illness.

Yeah I hear ya. It’s something not quite Backpfeifengesicht but more a disgust right? I’ve always found his whole face instantly unflattering. I knew about him as a kid in the 90’s since he was sort of a pop culture figure. He really was before Paris Hilton famous for being famous. I had no idea why this looking weird man made cameos in both Home Alone 2 and the Little Rascals movies. And then the Apprentice which I thought was yet another stupid reality show? And then he became the country’s most well known birther. That’s how Trump built his political name. It just saddens me that we went to as a nation giving Obama over 50% of the vote twice. No Democrat had done that since FDR. That’s a legitimate accomplishment. To then embracing this guy whose entire political being was doubting that President’s American identity.
