“Boomerang”

If I shoot him in the stomach
Then he’s hurting on my dime
And if I shoot him in the head, then he’s dead and he’s livin’ on my mind
My reflection in the mirror
Her perfection in his eyes
I’m a danger to myself
I run from twelve
And take my rage across the county line

But I won’t let this go
Not my tomorrow
Don’t forget your pride, it’s laying in her bed of sorrow

What you done to me
I swear to you it’s gonna come back like a boomerang
Wooooo
Wooooo
Woooooooooo

You knew my daddy didn’t like you
From the moment you two met
He knew too well, you would drag me through Hell
And never come back for the baby we’d regret
Oh

But I won’t let this go
Not my tomorrow
Don’t forget your pride
It’s laying in her bed of sorrow

Watcha done to me
I swear to you it’s gonna come back like a boomerang
Woooooo
Wooooo
Woooooooooo

Watcha done to me
I swear to you it’s gonna come back like a boomerang
And knock you to your knees
I swear to you it’s gonna come back like a boomerang

One explanation for why business like the NYT work so hard to both-sides and cater to the right wing sensibilities - look at the TV ratings.

Here is the Thursday cable finals:

The top 10 are owned by Murdoch. The viewership totals also blow away broadcast networks (on Thursday, not true usually for earlier in the week.)

America is in large part a right-wing nation, with pockets of elite liberalism (big coastal cities) and other pockets of old-fashioned (religious) black anti-white-nationalist polity.

Being human, I sometimes have an impulse to feel just a bit guilty when I laugh and gloat at the self-inflicted death of yet another covidiot.

I remind myself, and I want to remind you, that these people are not innocent victims. They are (or were, lol) willing participants in the greatest mass murder of Americans in history. They harassed and threatened and assaulted people who were only trying to save themselves by wearing a mask, or to stop mass death by enforcing common sense rules. They tried to overthrow the government for the benefit of a foreign-owned criminal. Their list of crimes and abominable acts is almost endless. It will have historians shaking their heads in wonder a thousand years from now.

To hell with them, and the diseased ideology that has fed them.

Well okay. I get it. But cable viewership is such a small fraction of the population. Low single digit millions. It’s the loud minority

Those are tiny numbers, and cable TV political shows are watched by a tiny minority in general.

But those “tiny minority” are much larger than audiences for other shows (whether contemporary event or not.)

Again, my comment was in reference to why outlets like the NYT seem to bend over backwards to appeal to Trumping masses.

It’s because NYT is a business, and the biggest markets for “news” are the old white folk.

I really don’t think this is true. As has been shown in elections, the hardcore right that every major media outlet tries to pander to is a minority. Even if they are a sizable minority, it doesn’t make good business sense for all of these outlets - CNN, NYT, FOX, OANN, Epoch Times, even MSNBC - to try to compete for the same minority, even if that minority is comprised of especially gullible people. Business 101 suggests that it would make more sense to try to capture a market that nobody else is even competing for, especially if that market is a majority.

We must conclude, then, that it’s not about business, money, clicks, page views, or anything like that at all. These media outlets aren’t catering to reactionary white people in order to capture their business. Instead, outlets like CNN and the NYT see themselves as the arbiters of American culture, as the ‘mainstream’. And the people that decide the news narratives don’t see it as their job to follow the trending viewpoints of Americans, but rather to determine them. They are reality shows. And like any reality show, they see it as their job to create a narrative that will resonate with people so that their target audience will internalise it. And the nature of America is that the only ‘target audience’ that has ever mattered in this country is average white people. Their opinions are sacred and cannot be wrong, even if they’re not exactly right. What we call bothsiderism is basically just the arbiters of US culture trying to give credibility to any stupid crap that a large number of white people think, for no other reason than ‘a large number of white people’ cannot be wrong.

Outlets like FOX, on the other hand, aren’t trying to give that same target audience credibility. They know that whatever they say becomes what that target audience thinks. So they make something up and set the story, several million white people chant it in unison, and the NYT then accepts it as automatically valid because average white people think it. No matter what it is, it can’t be wrong, so it becomes part of the narrative, so that the only demographic that matters in America will internalise it.

Yikes! This is the mach 1 ginsu bundle that I mentioned the other night as a likely reprisal weapon. It is ugly business, to be sure, but it also tends to limit the damage to the targeted shredee, without destroying nearby buildings or killing bystanders with red hot fragments. Republicans who have disparaged this strike should be presented with high resolution color images of the aftermath, if these are available.

My grandmother — BOTH my grandmothers — had plastic slipcovers for the “good” couches in the ROOM THAT CHILDREN WERE NEVER TO ENTER.

And silly doily things for across the top back of the couch. They were called antimacassars, because they were there to absorb the macasser oil that men put in their hair to slick it back. Keep the oil off the furniture.

My parents had plastic covers on everything. They never came off. My dad’s favorite chair was an outdoor wicker rocking chair —- in the formal living room. I think it cost like $45. They plastic’s that, too. 👀

I just pictured everyone in England walking around with their “racing spoon” sticking out of their shirt pocket.

*** A racing spoon is what we used to call the brown plastic spoons that came with MREs. Usually carried protruding from the pen slot in ones BDU jacket while in the field.
“Racing” because it would usually materialize in ones hand whenever someone else had some type of food prepared. So you could “taste” the dish.
The method of cleaning the spoon usually involve it being rubbed off with a portion of the dirty/sweaty BDU jacket you were wearing

If I was going to do a remake of The Black Hole, I’d just prefer to re-use the John Barry score instead of going with a new soundtrack. Yeah, the ending was….weird. On the other hand, going with a scientifically-accurate ending would be quite the downer and generally speaking, audiences typically prefer an uplifting ending. A good remake would probably have to be something within the sci-fi/horror genre.

Something I just posted to Facebook, because I have “friends” I know aren’t vaccinated:

Texas hospitals are near capacity, like most of the southern states. Covid infections among the unvaccinated are taking up almost all of the space, making up 97+ percent of all hospitalizations and deaths due to the virus. Not only are the unvaccinated dying at a high rate, they are infecting others at a high rate, and they are killing people who aren’t sick from the virus.

If you have been paying attention, you will notice that a lot of prominent anti-vaxxers have been catching the virus and dying. sorryantivaxxer.com has been listing those people, and it includes evangelical ministers, coaches, and radio personalities. One of the most recent is Caleb Wallace, kxan.com, a 30 year old who died and has left behind three daughters and a wife who is pregnant with their fourth. He was anti-mask and anti-vax, and refused to go to the hospital when he first started getting sick because he didn’t want to be a statistic.

I keep reading all of the comments and stories about how people’s freedoms are being violated by being required to wear a mask or get vaccinated. Neither of these are violations of your freedoms. A mask does not impede your ability to go to the store, and a vaccine does not impede your ability to petition the government. There is no freedom that either of these take away.

What you don’t have is the freedom to get other people sick or the ability to keep them from receiving medical care.

All freedoms come with responsibilities, which is when you are required to consider how they will affect other people. I have my car, which I have the right to own and drive, but I’m not allowed to drive it on sidewalks or against the flow of traffic. I have the freedom to write and speak about what’s on my mind, but I am not allowed to slander someone. I have the right to put tomato on my grilled cheese, and there’s nothing you can do about it. Freedom without responsibility is what children want, and it’s not a way to run a country.

“Oh, but if I get sick, it’s just me.” No, it isn’t. Look at Caleb. He’s leaving four children behind.

Lisa Steadman ended up in the hospital with the virus, and when she got home, she found her husband dead from it. wptv.com

And you can kill people who aren’t suffering from the disease. Daniel Wilkinson, a US Army vet, died from gallstone pancreatitis even though he lived right near a hospital because there are no free ICU beds. cbsnews.com

And put away your excuses:

“But it’s not been tested.” All of the vaccines have received the largest testing in the history of medicine.

“But I’d rather take Ivermectin.” You’d be willing to take a medicine for animals, based on a debunked scientific study, rather than ones based on actual scientific studies? Are you listening to yourself?

“But I’m healthy.” So was Bill Phillips, who I posted about earlier, facebook.com. He can’t walk 100 meters now and will have issues the rest of his life.

“But vaccinated people are getting sick and dying.” Yeah, no vaccine is perfect. But vaccinated people are representing less than three percent of the total people in the hospital and less than one percent of deaths. If everyone got vaccinated, the rate of hospitalization would be less than two percent of what it is now, and people like Wilkinson wouldn’t have to die. If everyone was vaccinated, the rate of transmission would drop off so fast the virus might disappear.

“Someone else will get it so I don’t have to.” That’s the great thing about the Delta variant. The vaccinated can’t protect you any longer. Remember when they used to say that it would have to be about 15 minutes of close contact to get infected? With Delta, it’s one second. And wait for the next variant based on Delta that all of you unvaccinated people are cooking up in your bodies. Delta already doubles your rate of having to be in the hospital versus the original version. Imagine doubling again.

“But my freedoms.” Grow up. Get the vaccine and wear a mask, or turn in your adult card and all of the privileges you get from it because you’re obviously not one.

Eric Clapton’s racist rant from 1976.

Eric Clapton’s Racist Rant (Still We Rise UK, November 28, 2020)

The first Rock Against Racism gig took place at the Princess Alice pub in Forest Gate in October 1976, with the blues singer Carol Grimes. A second gig followed in December at the Royal College of Art. The RAR performers came largely from black reggae and ska musicians, and white artists from the growing punk scene.

In summer 1977, RAR started its own fanzine, Temporary Hoarding, in which they explained what they stood for. Rock Against Racism wasn’t a single-issue campaign demanding, say, an apology from Clapton: it was against racism in the music scene, which encompassed phenomena as various as the wearing of the swastika by punk bands, the attempt by supporters of the National Front or British Movement to recruit young punks and skinheads, and even the division of musical genres by race (punk, metal, soul and reggae). In its boldest moments, Rock Against Racism grasped that music couldn’t be separated from everything else, and proposed to confront racism in electoral politics and in state institutions.

(more, caution for Clapton’s initial racist rant at the top of the post)

So Empire, Port Sulphur, Buras, and Venice, which are all down da Parish on the west side of the Mississippi Delta are looking at 15 foot + storm surges tomorrow.

Fifteen years ago, as an Emergency Response Coordinator in Texas, I volunteered to be on a strike team to go into New Orleans and document what happened in the City and to look at how Texas coastal cities could be hardened in the days immediately after Karina hit. Got there on September 2nd.

The Feds paid for the trip and the study. I was selected because of my position and because I lived in N.O. for a decade before I moved to Texas.

Port Sulphur, Empire, Buras, and Venice had all taken 15 foot + storm surges before I got there.

We spent two days in N.O. looking at how gas stations and pipelines had their gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel product in underground tanks, above-ground tanks, and pipes displaced by the inundation, (it was a fucking mess, to the point where some areas in east St. Bernard Parish had a foot of raw, unprocessed crude oil sitting on every square foot of land around some spill sites.) and then we headed down the highway on the west side of the river, LA 23, through Belle Chasse, towards Venice, the town farthest south.

Everything smelled liked sour mud and death. South of Belle Chase, an old ante-bellum plantation house was intact. You’ve seen it. It’s on the front of the Southern Comfort bottle. South of that it was just hundreds of reeking, bloated, drowned cattle and dying vegetation coated in mud.

Port Sulphur, where the delta gets skinnier and swampier had significant surge flooding, maybe ten feet.

In Empire, all of the fishing boats were washed into and onto the levee on the west side of Ol’ Muddy.

Buras had a surge (rising tides lift all ships!) that deposited shrimp boats on the roof of the second floor of the high school, so maybe 25’.

Not far below Buras, we couldn’t get any farther on LA 23. The road and in many cases, the roadbed was gone. It was an area that had thousands of old (and new) collection facilities where oil was pumped onshore into storage tanks from offshore platforms and then pumped up to the refineries closer to N.O.

They were almost completely destroyed, crude oil gushing into the marshes. The oil companies were flying teams into the area by helicopter up and down the delta to shut down the leaks like frantic little ants.

That was, after all, black gold (and, oh, an environmental problem).

The reek was amazing, so since we had gotten as far as we could by high-water trucks, we decided to drive back up to Belle Chasse, where at least we could breathe air that was only polluted by shit, piss, and rotting flesh.

Lessons learned about Katrina?

The infrastructure was wholly unprepared for the havoc the storm produced. Basically, not one fucking thing worked as planned. Nothing. FEMA pissed all over its hands and then fainted from the vapors.

Army Corps of Engineer flood walls and levees failed spectacularly and resulted in over a thousand deaths. Another Army Corps project that was hated from the time it was first introduced, the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet (Mr.Go) which environmental engineers said was a disaster waiting to happen, was a disastrous source of flood water in East New Orleans because it had no flood control component and killed hundreds.

My drinking buddy John Burnett, an NPR reporter and fantastic mouth harp player, is on his way back to the hellmouth in New Orleans and will be there tomorrow, right where he was when Katrina came onshore and revealed just how fucking clueless the Bush Admin was when faced with the disaster of Katrina.

We have spent billions on the Gulf Coast hardening cities in the way of water and wind. We’ll see, tomorrow, on how well we have done.

Good Luck, Louisiana, I’m rooting for you. I lived in your fetid swamps for 15 years and I hated your casual and overt racism, your deep embrace of castes, both black and white, and yet I love you from the bottom of my heart.

That, alas, has been known for a long while.

More from the article:

The British guitar legend Eric Clapton has told of the self-disgust he felt at seeing old footage of himself chanting racist slogans at a 1976 concert in the British city of Birmingham.

Clapton was speaking at a Q&A in London following the screening of the highly anticipated biographical documentary Eric Clapton: Life in 12 Bars.

The 18-time Grammy winner said he felt shame about the notorious incident, wherein he praised the racist Tory MP Enoch Powell, declared that Britain must stop itself from becoming a “black colony,” and said “England is for white people, man.”

and

Clapton’s bizarre outburst, which helped spur the Rock Against Racism movement, saw him labeled a racist for many years, and he has subsequently apologized many times, blaming his addiction to drink and drugs for the outburst.

“I was so ashamed of who I was, a kind of semi-racist, which didn’t make sense. Half of my friends were black, I dated a black woman and I championed black music.”— Thus goes Eric Clapton’s apology.

As noted at Wonkette on Sen. Rand Paul dodging on whether he would condemn usage of Ivermectin for Covid-19 (saying it hasn’t been studied yet, simply to spite Donald Trump, two lies in one):

We haven’t studied whether strips of Rand Paul’s liver would work against Covid-19 (served with fava beans and a nice Chianti).

This disingenuous argument (drug X hasn’t been studied for Covid-19) has been long used by quacks to justify all kinds of crap. There are tens of thousands of drugs; not every drug is tested for every condition.

Well, you just stick a really high-calorie feeding tube down your catatonic family COVID victim and, instead of letting the family turn off the machine to achieve closure, you agree that they should maximize the profit they can make off their family member who can give them a source of funeral expenses.

You can probably get a solid 20 pounds of fois gras off a comatose human Covid victim. It’s only fair for the families to get whatever benefit they need to protect their interests.

I don’t know why this is controversial.

Hey man, it’s good to know *you’re* out there.

I’ve always been a structural geologist by training, who got out of school and flew jets in the Air Force for a few years, then worked internationally as a wellhead geologist. Blew my back out, got it surgically repaired, and got into Environmental Geology. Got a job w/ the State o’ Texas as an Emergency Response Coordinator and Contract Manager.

But then, I retired, and I still worked as a consultant. But mostly for insurance companies, because they know their business models are really fucked up right now and it will be hard as hell to reinvent the concept of risk. They are trying to sell policies in an environment where the Media says what we are experiencing is the “New Normal”. What we are experiencing is the new chaos.

The big insurance companies have made their decisions. They will not insure any construction, anywhere, on the Texas gulf coast, until you promise, as chattel slaves, all of your children, and any future children, as collateral in case of future losses.

Texans, being Texans, are snapping up beach properties as fast as they can.

LA man who mocked Covid-19 vaccines dies of virus (BBC)

A California man who mocked Covid-19 vaccines on social media has died after a month-long battle with the virus.

Stephen Harmon, a member of the Hillsong megachurch, had been a vocal opponent of vaccines, making a series of jokes about not having the vaccine.

“Got 99 problems but a vax ain’t one,” the 34-year-old tweeted to his 7,000 followers in June.

He was treated for pneumonia and Covid-19 in a hospital outside Los Angeles, where he died on Wednesday.

In the days leading up to his death, Mr Harmon documented his fight to stay alive, posting pictures of himself in his hospital bed.

“Please pray y’all, they really want to intubate me and put me on a ventilator,” he said.

In case it needs any proof, Governor Mississippi Covid’s statement that Christian’s aren’t afraid of death because JEEZUS may not be quite correct. It’s more along the lines of “sure, many of you may die, but that’s a price I’m willing to pay.”

As noted at Wonkette

This disingenuous argument (drug X hasn’t been studied for Covid-19) has been long used by quacks to justify all kinds of crap. There are tens of thousands of drugs; not every drug is tested for every condition.

Researchers look at mechanism of action — they’re not going to test a drug unless there is some mechanistic reason to do so; the fact that some drugs at outside of what we expect is simply because we don’t understand everything. When drugs are used off-label, there is a reason, it’s not every drug can cure everything, that’s moronic. It is expensive to get a drug through the FDA approval process — and each new use is a new approval.

This would all be really simple if the EU joined the British Commonwealth.

The Commonwealth ain’t what it used to be. If you’re a Canuck, you get a youth working visa for a year for some other Commonwealth country and that’s about it.

A lot of the COVID stupidity tracks Brexit stupidity:

-Conservatives bullshit their way into a grossly stupid policy based on greed, racism, and internal infighting.
-Policy does what opponents said it would do.
-Conservatives show concern over disastrous effects that simply appeared one day for no reason at all, but obviously what we need now is MOAR grossly stupid policy.
-Effects become so blatantly obvious that even Conservatives have trouble not seeing them. Conservatives then blame opponents for opposing the policy, since opposing the policy just made Conservatives implement the policy, because that’s the way it works.
-More Conservative infighting, then general shuffling towards an actual sane policy favored by the opponents with a shiny new name on it. General agreement that it was a good thing the opponents weren’t in charge because God knows how bad they’d fuck it up, yeah. (Not here yet)

191
Dangerman  Aug 29, 2021 • 5:20:46am

Before covid it was easier to be anti vax

Most adults were already vaxxed .
Sure they could opt out their kids.
But it was more a political statement than an actual health on the line issue

a lot/many/most of those diseases are quite rare because previous efforts were so effective. Yes some kids got measles, the pox, but most wouldn’t. Qed who needs a vax?

Hiv you could avoid.
Other recent bugs…not too common.

Covid is demonstrating what it was like before. And how effective all these other vaccines really are. Because it’s so transmissible and is hitting everybody

no secret, ancient, exotic cures or preventatives. No one weird trick they dont want you to know.

You don’t vax and mask, good chance you’ll die or be permanently health compromised.

That’s your choice. It’s that simple.

And that’s besides who else you’ll infect and take with you.

re: #33 Renaissance_Man

I just want news. I’ve gotten to where I can barely even stand MSNBC. It’s a bunch of pundits taking softball questions and running with them for 10 minutes at a time. When bad things happen, I don’t need to constantly have the anchors tell me how their hearts are breaking, or how tragic a situation is. I don’t want my news editorialized. If 200 people are killed in a suicide bombing, I’m capable of determining for myself how sad I am about it without editorializing from an anchor.

Not that this society couldn’t stand to lose a whole lot of mean idiots, but how damaged do you have to be to do this shit?

It’s because, as I was recently saying to the dean, stupid people are stupid because they are stupid, not because they determined somewhere it was an advantageous life choice. They literally lack the capacity to analyze two outcomes, two choices, and to arrive at the decision to take the better one. If I were, god forbid, diagnosed with cancer tomorrow, I would weigh everything up—challenges of treatment, actual extension of a life with quality based on that treatment, etc., and determine if I want to pursue that or maybe just go to a pawn shop, buy a .38 and stick it in my mouth. That’s because like other smart people, I understand how to weigh risk, benefit for the most part. Stupid people just honest to god can’t do that. They’re like watching a dog trying to untangle its tether from around a bush.

Yes, but his wealth and whiteness give him privelege, so that he can rail against vaccines!

And, hubbada hubbada let’s ignore my hypocrisy given my heroin addiction when I lost a solid ten years of my creativity and, given my lack of new shit, maybe all of my creativity when I can now blather about shit I’ve heard on the gazpacho Internet gazpacho cookookaroo.

the same guy who gave us the best bluesbreakers album in existence, with two time-stopping guitar solos, would also give us “My Father’s Eyes” and the sad dreck of the late80’s/early 90’s.

re: #194 steve_davis

I just want news. I’ve gotten to where I can barely even stand MSNBC. It’s a bunch of pundits taking softball questions and running with them for 10 minutes at a time. When bad things happen, I don’t need to constantly have the anchors tell me how their hearts are breaking, or how tragic a situation is. I don’t want my news editorialized. If 200 people are killed in a suicide bombing, I’m capable of determining for myself how sad I am about it without editorializing from an anchor.

1 - there is way more time than there is news to fill it

2 - do not lose sight of their goal
they are selling ad space. nothing more.
they are not delivering a news ‘service’
their model, their biases, their on air faces all reflect their ability to sell more ads

‘news’ is now something you must cobble together from multiple sources.
you must analyse and distill it on your own.
‘news’ is no longer served to you (if it ever was).
now you have to work for it.

re: #120 sagehen

addiction to drink and drugs never gave anybody racist attitudes, or caused them to think racist thoughts.

it does cause people to say out loud the thoughts that, when they were sober, they knew enough to bite their tongue and keep their thoughts to themself.

There’s a myth that drugs/alcohol cause people to say what they really think about stuff. They don’t. The hateful, hurtful things get said, not because they addict believes them, but because that part of the brain that is unleashed at the time knows that those are the things that will typically most hurt the listener. Ginger Baker is a case in point. He didn’t actually believe the hateful shit he said to people that he actually loved.

Ah, an Americanism I was not aware of. ‘Nips’ is more recognisable, assuming it is disambiguated by context from the now-deprecated racial slur (e.g. the Warner Brothers wartime short, “Bugs Bunny Nips the Nips”).

not really an americanism

Shane Vaughn Claims COVID-19 Vaccines Don’t Work Because The U.S. Is Under God’s Judgment (Right Wing Watch)

TL;DR, too many geyh rights and reproductive freedom.

Radical right-wing pastor Shane Vaughn used his livestream broadcast Monday night to falsely declare that COVID-19 vaccines are not working because, he claimed, the United States is under God’s judgment for tolerating reproductive freedom and LGBTQ rights.

“I’m going to tell you what God told me to tell you,” Vaughn said. “They’ve got variants coming that ain’t no vaccine going to work for. This nation is under the judgment of God. And I want to tell you something right now: They’re already admitting that the vaccine is alarmingly not working. Alarmingly! They’re alarmed at what they’re seeing. Do you know why? Because America, you’re making a huge mistake.”

Vaughn then read from Isaiah 31, in which God told the Israelites not to look to Egypt for help but rather to rely on God. Vaughn said the same principle must apply today.

Omaha World-Herald, three hours ago:

Nebraska nurses exhausted and frustrated with unvaccinated COVID patients

Like many health care professionals, Heather Elliott believed the arrival of COVID-19 vaccines earlier this year would put the darkest days of the pandemic behind them.

“The very first day the vaccine went live, we were all on the phone that minute, ‘how fast can we get a shot?’ We thought everyone would be that way, standing in line to get their shot,” Elliott, a discharge nurse at Bryan Health in Lincoln, wrote in a recent Facebook post.

But that hasn’t happened.

After a surge in vaccinations this spring, the push dried up, and everyone considered the pandemic over, she and other health care providers said. Now the virus is back.

“People are running, and they’re tired,” Elliott said. “It’s a constant rat race of getting this thing done so you can move on. I miss the days when you can sit in a patient’s room and just talk to them.”

The recent surge in COVID-19 infections has left Nebraska nurses and doctors exhausted, dismayed about the level of distrust in vaccinations and science, and devastated that even healthy, younger patients are dying.

That is brilliant. I’m about as white as you can get, I agree with every word. I feel like it’s hopeless, but then I see the faces of the little kids and their families on their way here from Afghanistan, and yes there is fear and exhaustion there, but there’s also hope, and joy. Those are the faces of people who want this to be a place of not just rest, but somewhere to heal and thrive. That’s where all the good stuff, the possibilities that weren’t there before, are now. I want people here who to want to be here, to understand our history and still see all the potential here to do so many amazing things. People who don’t take everything for granted like the spoiled assholes that seem to be winning and getting all the attention and much of the power.

He issued the federal emergency disaster declaration several days ago, while the storm was still south of Cuba, for every Louisiana parish. That freed up FEMA to start pre-positioning disaster relief equipment, freed up federal funds, and invoked agreements between states (Florida sent electrical teams to Louisiana a couple days ago).

Nebraska has already sent electrical teams and equipment to Louisiana in anticipation of the storm. I imagine other states have as well.

The National Hurricane Center discussion page indicates that rapid strengthening of Hurricane Ida has levelled off. They indicate that any more strengthening seems less likely now.

Ida’s rapid strengthening appears to have leveled off within the
past hour or so. NOAA and Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter
aircraft that have been in the storm this morning have reported
peak flight-level winds of 146 to 148 kt between 8000 and
10000 ft, and believable SFMR winds around 130 kt. Based on
these observations, the initial wind speed remains 130 kt for this
advisory. The central pressure appears to have bottomed out around
929 mb, and the latest dropsonde in the eye from the Air Force
plane supports a minimum pressure of 933 mb. Ida’s satellite and
radar presentation is very impressive, as the 15-nm-wide eye is
very well-defined and surrounded by a ring of intense convection.
Within the past hour or so, there is evidence in radar imagery of a
secondary eyewall, and this has likely caused Ida’s intensity to
level off for now. Although Ida’s extreme winds are confined to the
inner eyewall, the aircraft data indicate that hurricane-force winds
extend outward about 45 n mi to the northeast of the center, and
based on buoy data the tropical-storm-force wind field extends
outward about 130 n mi northeast of the center.

mmmirele  Aug 29, 2021 • 9:43:02am

All right, this has been rattling around in my world for the past week, so I thought I would share.

I live in Arizona, but where I live is Mormon country. Every high school in town has a seminary next to the campus or across the street for release time. I have over a dozen church buildings (many housing multiple congregations) within four miles of my house. Oh yeah, and the temple, a little over 2 miles from my house.

So this is the sort of thing that does have ripples through the community.

From last Monday:

On the same day that Brigham Young University announced the creation of an “Office of Belonging” to combat “prejudice of any kind, including that based on race…and sexual orientation,” Latter-day Saint apostle Jeffrey R. Holland sharply criticized faculty members and students who challenge the faith’s teachings on same-sex marriage.

He also questioned why a BYU valedictorian would choose his 2019 commencement address to come out as gay.

During Monday’s annual University Conference for faculty and staff in the Provo school’s Marriott Center, Holland quoted from a recent letter he received, which said that “some faculty are not supportive of the church’s doctrines and policies and choose to criticize them publicly.”

BYU faculty and staff should take up their intellectual “muskets” to defend The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, especially “the doctrine of the family and…marriage as the union of a man and a woman,” the apostle said, but some choose to aim “‘friendly fire’ — and from time to time the church, its leaders and some of our colleagues within the university community have taken such fire on this campus. And sometimes it isn’t friendly — wounding students and the parents of students who are confused about what so much recent flag-waving and parade-holding on this issue means.”

Holland brought up the time a student “commandeer[ed] a graduation podium intended to represent everyone getting diplomas to announce his personal sexual orientation.

“What might commencement come to mean or not mean if we push individual license over institutional dignity for very long?” he asked. “Do we simply end up with more divisiveness in our culture than we already have? And we already have too much everywhere.”

The young man living rent-free in Jeffrey R. Holland’s head is Matt Easton.

Matt Easton, the gay valedictorian, was surprised and disappointed by Holland’s mention of his action.

“I am proud of what I did two years ago,” he responded Monday, “and I stand by what I said.”

His speech, including the mention of his sexual orientation, was approved by his dean two weeks in advance, Easton said from his home in Berkeley, Calif, where he is about to begin graduate school. “I wasn’t trying to grandstand or ‘commandeer’ the event. I drew on my personal experiences because they shaped my time at BYU — authenticity is not the same as ‘agenda pushing.’”

There’s more at the link. sltrib.com

That “muskets” language aroused a LOT of attention. Here is one tweet, there’s lots more on Twitter:

For the record, the guy is spreading water to get rid of the chalk markings on the sidewalk. Not gasoline, not setting it alight. (Why yes, I was waiting for a lighter to come out.)

There’s a high school not far from my house and there’s a seminary across the street. No, not going to protest over there, as there are PLENTY of people in the Mormon community who are aware of this latest incredibly homophobic statement by a high leader in their church. But I ache for the kids who are going to hear this shit over and over and over again as they may be pressured to go to BYU. It doesn’t sound like healthy place if the church leadership is urging professors to spend precious class time on blasting LGBTQ persons.

It just hurts to imagine so many kids in my neighborhood being fed this crap. I want to tell 80 YO Jeffrey R. Holland that he’s not helping and actually hurting people.

It looks like Ida is going to be Biden’s Katrina. You can be sure that no matter how well the Administration responds, Fox News will report that it was a catastrophic failure, and the mainstream media will play along.

I dunno: I’m sure the RWNM will do their damndest to magnify the slightest misstep or inadequacy in hurricane relief for Ida into THE WORST DISASTER EVER AND IT’S ALL JOE BIDEN’S FAULT!!! - but I have to wonder how well that line is going to play outside the Bubble? Ever since Katrina, every President (even the slacking FG) has been cognizant of the bad press - never mind the damage and casualties - poor emergency preparation can engender, and done (at least something) to avoid or mitigate the effects of another Katrina. And made sure the public was aware of those efforts. Joe aBiden and his people, in general, seem to know what they’re doing: and, just as importantly, make sure The Media know that.
Yeah, the wingers are going to jump on any fault and try to make hay off it, but it’s likely to have little impact outside the goober base.
I hope.

The notion of unbiased news is fairly recent (Early TV/Postwar era). For most of our history the news media was a melange of partisan/economic/ethnic casemaking. We were supposed to be smart enough and educated enough to sort it out.

I will always appreciate how professor David Montgomery opened my eyes to how partisan the press has been in US History. He started with examples of the National Gazette (Jefferson) vs. the Gazette Of The United States (Hamilton). and it’s been a constant thread in this country starting there, going to Greeley, Pulitzer, Hearst, Luce, McCormack and the Ochs.

I can only say (from the outside of Christianity looking in) that if God had a message that was vital for every person to know, there would not be ten thousand different varieties of Christianity all preaching different versions of what Christianity is.

There’s a reason the phrase “the Internet is where religion goes to die” exists. I noted Apostle Holland’s hateful comments a couple days ago here, along with the pushback from other Christians.

The harder each denomination tightens its grip, the more people say they’re done with Christianity. Christian apologists do more damage to their faith than atheists ever could.

When we get callers reporting scam e-mails we are required to tell them to visit the FBI Internet page at fbi.gov

The page says

To report potential e-scams, please go the Internet Crime Complaint Center and file a report. Note: The FBI does not send mass e-mails to private citizens about cyber scams, so if you received an e-mail that claims to be from the FBI Director or other top official, it is most likely a scam.

Front-loading washer also aren’t as good as top-loading for having sex on top of (think about the rotation of the innards)… so everybody should have top loading anyway. Ergo, top-loading washers are superior.

re: #201 steve_davis

Anyone can be brainwashed. We all have our own blind spots and prejudices that are difficult to overcome because we often don’t see them. We cannot be experts in everything so we have to rely on those we believe have the knowledge and experience to inform us. And we have all let ourselves be guided by false prophets —different prophets for different people — based on our pre-existing biases. How do people analyze the best choice or the risks associated with decisions when we actually don’t know the probabilities or when our sources give us inaccurate (either deliberately or unknowingly) statistics?

When my husband was diagnosed with kidney cancer, we met with three top experts in the field in the Chicago area, experts associated with different institutions: they each gave us totally different recommendations on the proper course of treatment. No one was trying to lead us astray — but when your life is at stake and you don’t have the technical knowledge, you might as well throw dice to select the best course.

The one thing we do know is that the MSM are out to get Biden — just as they harmed Hillary in 2016 — and there are few sources of information that we can trust.

But the Queen is on your money. That’s the important part.

If the United Kingdom could just force the EU to put Queen Elizabeth II on the euro, everything would be fine.

That was actually already part of the euro (coins) — every euro has a national side, countries that are monarchies (e.g. Belgium, Spain) already put their monarchs head on their euros.
