There were 3 good arguments that Jesus was Black:
1. He called everyone brother
2. He liked Gospel
3. He didn’t get a fair trial

But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus was Jewish:
1. He went into His Father’s business
2. He lived at home until he was 33
3. He was sure his Mother was a virgin and his Mother was sure He was God

But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus was Italian:
1. He talked with His hands
2. He had wine with His meals
3. He used olive oil

But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus was a Californian:
1. He never cut His hair
2. He walked around barefoot all the time
3. He started a new religion

But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus was an American Indian:
1. He was at peace with nature
2. He ate a lot of fish
3. He talked about the Great Spirit

But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus was Irish:
1. He never got married.
2. He was always telling stories.
3. He loved green pastures.

But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus was Mexican:
1. He treated his mama like she was a saint.
2. He always wore llantas and a serape.
3. He was a carpenter who could fix anything.

But the most compelling evidence of all - 3 proofs that Jesus was a woman:
1. He fed a crowd at a moment’s notice when there was virtually no food
2. He kept trying to get a message across to a bunch of men who just didn’t get it
3. And even when He was dead, He had to get up because there was still work to do.

I did not. That is the actual image of the dopefish. The original is, as demonstrated there, green; my dopefish avatar here is pink, because I am a pinko commie leftist.

I probably would have chosen the Bugblatter of I was versed in the genre.

But second place is nothing to scoff at. That’s quite the accomplishment.

@Bo_Gardiner
This is stunning. I collapsed it into one image for sharing. It deserves it. Colin Cowherd has approaching 2 MILLION Twitter followers and was MAGA until 2 years ago. People should share it with RW or uncertain friends and family.

[Embedded content]

Here’s the text in a form legible to read on a handheld:

Colin Cowherd, 5/51/2024 podcast

“He’s trying to sell me an America that doesn’t exist. I don’t see crime, I’m not stumbling over homeless people. I see happy people. Dodger Stadium is full, leads Major League Baseball in attendance. Laker games are full. NFL games are full. People have money in their pocket. LAX is packed, I just saw record airline revenue over the weekend.

I’m constantly being sold an America by Donald Trump of ‘crime rates are skyrocketing.’ No, they’re actually not. Starting in 2023 they have plummeted coast to coast…

You can’t keep selling me on how bad the country I live in is, because it’s not…
Donald Trump is now a felon. His campaign chairman was a felon. So is his deputy campaign manager, his personal lawyer, his chief strategist, his National Security Adviser, his Trade Advisor, his Foreign Policy Adviser, his campaign fixer and his company CFO. They’re all felons. Judged by the company you keep. It’s a cabal of convicts. If everybody in your social circle is a felon, I don’t think it’s rigged. I don’t think the world’s against you.

And to get people to agree on anything, 34 counts? O for 34? That’s a batting slump even the New York Mets could be impressed with. O for 34.

When you’re constantly trying to sell me on an America that I don’t see…Trump’s entire gameplan is ‘The country is in a free fall.’ Maybe in the Trump-centric neighborhoods it is.
Stop trying to sell me on ‘everything’s rigged, the country’s falling into the sea, the economy’s terrible. The America I live in is imperfect. But compared to the rest of the world, I think we’re doing okay.”

Your recipe reminded me of my dad’s cobbler. I had to ask him for the recipe. It’s one of those high taste-to-effort ratio recipes.

1 cup sugar
1 cup flour
1 cup evaporated milk
2 tsp. Baking Powder
1 stick of butter or margarine
1 large can of Peaches with heavy syrup

Heat the fruit in a sauce pan. Add ½ cup of sugar to the juice. (If there needs to be more juice add ½ cup water. This will turn to syrup. You do not want juice thick).

Mix sugar, flour, baking powder in a bowl. Add milk and mix well.

Melt butter or margarine in a 9” X 13” casserole dish or cake pan, in the oven. Pour batter into the butter. Pour fruit mixture into the batter. DO NOT STIR OR MIX.

Bake at 350*F until golden brown and done.

I found a slight variation at adventuresofadiymom.com, where they do the whole thing in one pan. In both cases the cobbler looks like this served:

The fun part is that you pour the peaches on top, but they sink through the batter as it cooks.

Edit: We’ve used that basic recipe with other fruits as well, such as cherries and blackberries.

“…The swing of independent voters after this conviction has been unbelievable because no one believes it. And you know, they’re literally feeding him, you know, certain segments of the population that he might not have had in 2016 and 2020 because for the first time, they realize that the system’s coming down, that he’s the victim. He’s the victim that oftentimes some of their communities were.

And you see them swinging. Look at the African-American vote, right? That’s swinging over to Donald Trump in spades. Look at the Hispanic vote over the last couple years. You know, look at the youth vote right now, Maria. I mean, we’ve never had more youth support out there and people know exactly what’s going on and they want a strong country again.”

The D-Day flight made two re-enactment parachute drops over Normandy today. As I’ve mentioned several times, “That’s All Brother” (AF 42-92847) is the actual aircraft that led the airborne assault on D-Day. It is probably the most historic single aircraft in existence, not ignoring the Wright Flyer and the Spirit of Saint Louis. It should have a place of honor in the National Air and Space Museum.

Second SBC pastor implicated in ‘conspiracy’ to destroy evidence in federal abuse inquiry (The Tennessean (May 29, 2024)

[the abuse they dance around in the article is sexual abuse]

A Florida pastor, during his tenure as an administrator at a top Southern Baptist seminary, instructed another seminary employee to make a document about an abuse report “go away,” according to court records.

The records, filed by federal prosecutors and unsealed last week, came to light amid an ongoing U.S. Department of Justice investigation into aspects of the Southern Baptist Convention and how the SBC and its affiliated entities handled reports of abuse.

The records on the Florida pastor, who prosecutors didn’t identify, are part of the case against North Carolina pastor Matt Queen, also former administrator at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, who is accused of falsifying records in an attempt to cover up an abuse report. In a news release last week, FBI Assistant Director James Smith said Queen was part of a “conspiracy to destroy evidence related to the ongoing investigation of sexual misconduct.”

The Florida pastor, who served as the seminary’s chief of staff at the time, is Heath Woolman, currently the lead pastor of Fruit Cove Baptist Church in St. Johns, Florida, according to two people familiar with the events outlined by federal prosecutors and an analysis of records from Woolman’s tenure at Southwestern.

Elections all over the world today. Mexico is set to elect a woman regardless of which party wins. India’s Narenda Modi is set for a landslide victory, causing a jump in India’s Nifty 50 stock index to jump.

Czechia’s ANO leads EU election polls with conservative coalition close behind (Euractiv, June 3, 2024)

The populist movement of former prime minister Andrej Babiš, ANO (Renew), is set to win the EU elections in Czechia with 23.1% of the vote, while the conservative coalition of Prime Minister Petr Fiala, Spolu (EPP+ECR), is in second place with 21.5%, new polls show.

Both ANO, the largest opposition party in the country, and Spolu would secure six seats each in the new European Parliament, according to the May election model by the STEM agency for CNN Prima News.

According to STEM, the liberal STAN (Independent) would win 10.3% of the vote and three seats. The far-right coalition of Freedom and Direct Democracy and Trikolora (ID) would come fourth with 9.5%, closely followed by the Pirates (Greens/EFA) with 9.4% and two seats each. The far-left coalition Stačilo! (The Left) would get 8.1% of the vote and two seats.

A tale of two consumers (Robert Reich)

Those are lower and higher income people.

Higher income people (the top 10% who own the disproportionate amount of stock and have little credit card debt) benefit far more from stock buybacks than the vast majority of the country.

Lower income people survive on wages (which rarely increase vis inflation).

Corporations have raked in record profits by raising prices and shifting the blame to inflation.

Thus businesses which rely on low-income customers are doing poorly now, whilst those relying on wealthy customers (hospitality, airlines, &c) are booming.

Even Walmart is shifting to higher-income consumers. Over the past three years, households earning over $100,000 have provided the biggest gains in Walmart’s market share. Its merchandise now includes AirPods, MacBook Air, and other items that “appeal to a high-income demographic,” according to John David Rainey, Walmart’s chief financial officer. “The more we move into that space … the more we’re going to retain this cohort.”

Kevin McCarthy Wants Matt Gaetz ‘Convicted’ Over ‘Underage Women’

“The former House speaker uses some of his strongest words yet against his GOP arch-rival.”

Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) called for the prosecution and conviction of Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla) on Sunday.

“I just don’t think Gaetz is a conservative,” McCarthy said on CNN when asked why he’s supporting Gaetz’s primary opponent. “If you think about it, if there’s anybody who should go to trial, I mean, Gaetz is one who should be convicted in a trial.”

“Why? asked CNN’s Manu Raju. “Why do you say that?”

“We all know the challenge here,” McCarthy said. “You can’t sleep with underage women and think you can get away with it.”

“He denies that,” Raju pointed out.

“Well, the women don’t,” McCarthy said. “And so there’s people in jail because of it.”

No True Conservative seeks underage women, eh?

What about all the fundamentalists who want to have women married and having babies once said young women hit puberty?

Last night my wife watched a documentary (I couldn’t: I had to put on noise-cancelling headphones due to my own religious trauma) of a Christian pastor (Pentecostal) who was convicted of raping girls as young as eight. He’s a big fan of repealing age-of-consent laws, calling them an affront to God and improper meddling by the government in religion.

Even in court, he testified that it’s not rape and he didn’t understand why the state would go after a sixty-eight year-old man, since the Bible clearly states a woman is defined when she has her menses. He was sentenced to 175 years in prison, to be consecutively served.

His wife was also convicted and sent to federal prison: She died after a few months after contracting Covid-19.

Parents of the children (now adults) have all disowned their children, because they brought dishonour on their church’s congregation. (The church still exists and has branches in several states.)

Trump’s July 11 sentencing hearing is going to be very interesting. On the one hand, a first time non-violent low-level felon wouldn’t normally receive any time. On the other hand, Trump is expressing zero remorse, spewing lies about the judge, the prosecutors and the Biden Administration’s role in the prosecution (it had none), and making vague threats that his cult “won’t stand for it.” Any other criminal defendant acting this way would IMHO almost certainly be getting jail time unless found to be mentally incompetent. Trump is virtually daring Judge Merchan to sentence him to prison because 1) he can fund raise off of it and 2) he believes the sentence will be stayed pending his appeal, and if he wins in November he’ll never serve any time. I don’t know what Judge Merchan should do here; I do know that Trump is the most dangerous man in America, he should be behind bars, and he is straining our democratic institutions to the breaking point.

The third human case of H5N1, reported on Thursday in a farmworker in Michigan who was experiencing respiratory symptoms, tells us that the current bird flu situation is at a dangerous inflection point.

The virus is adapting in predictable ways that increase its risk to humans, reflecting our failure to contain it early on. The solutions to this brewing crisis — such as comprehensive testing — have been there all along, and they’re becoming only more important. If we keep ignoring the warning signs we have only ourselves to blame.

H5N1 has long been more than a bird problem. The virus has found its way into dairy cattle across nine states, affecting 69 herds that we know about. Of the three human cases of H5N1 that have been identified, all involve farmworkers who were in direct contact with infected cows or milk. The first two cases were relatively mild, involving symptoms like eye irritation, or conjunctivitis. However, the most recent case has shown more concerning signs, including coughing.

The emergence of respiratory symptoms is disconcerting because it indicates a potential shift in how the virus affects humans. Coughing can spread viruses more easily than eye irritation can.

New symptoms should be expected as the virus continues to spread and adapt to humans. Yet our response to this looming danger has been woefully inadequate, particularly in the area of testing.

With Trump’s sentencing hearing coming just days before the GOP Convention to nominate him for President, everyone will be watching him to see what he says when his opportunity comes to make a statement to the judge. Will Trump admit his wrongdoing,
express remorse and ask the judge for no jail time? (LOL, no). Will Trump express to Judge Merchan’s face the lies he has been spewing in public to demonstrate his defiance of the “Crooked Biden Administration?” I don’t see how Judge Merchan can’t sentence Trump to at least some time in that event, so maybe Trump will be a bit chicken and waive his opportunity to make a statement, which seems like the wisest course since expressing remorse is definitely off the table.

The Sandhills Tropical Update.

Staying Ahead of the Storm: 2024 CoreLogic Hurricane Risk Report (CoreLogic, a data analytics firm)

In the 2024 Hurricane Risk Report, CoreLogic identified that across the U.S. Gulf Coast and East Coast:

Over 32.7 million residential properties, with a total reconstruction cost value of $10.8 trillion, are at moderate or greater risk of hurricane wind damage.
Approximately 7.7 million properties, with a reconstruction cost value of $2.3 trillion, are at risk of storm surge flooding.

That’s “trillions” of dollars.

La Niña conditions are cooler waters in the Tropics in the Pacific with warmer waters in the Atlantic, the current setup. This causes less wind shear from the Pacific into the Gulf of Mexico, allowing more Atlantic storms to develop whilst suppressing Pacific storms due to cooler waters. (The opposite occurs during El Niño conditions.)

Currently, the National Hurricane Center only has one area of interest, a tropical wave off the south coast of Mexico. They give it a 20% chance of development over seven days while it trucks west away from land.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. It’s a gloriously sunny late spring day with temps in the mid 80s. I got to attend my first concert since pre-covid, and it was a pretty good show. Jon Anderson and the Band Geeks. Wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but Jon’s voice is still pretty good. He did a bunch of old and deeper cuts, but only downside is there was no encore, and prior shows apparently had him do Owner of a Lonely Heart.

Oh well. It was still good to get out and attend a concert, especially since it was like the first true date night with the mrs since we had the little dumplin.

NEW YORK (AP) — The Washington Post said Sunday that its executive editor, Sally Buzbee, has stepped down after three years at the top of one of journalism’s most storied brands.

She will be replaced by Matt Murray, former editor-in-chief of The Wall Street Journal, until this fall’s presidential election. Following that, Robert Winnett, currently deputy editor of the Telegraph Media Group, will take over as editor following the election.

No reason was given for Buzbee’s departure.

There are a couple of things that the judge possibly will consider:

1) the number of civil judgements against Trump, speaking of his character;
2) his age.

The latter might get him relocated to whatever facilities NY has for elderly prisoners?

I can also imagine that a state doctor (for the prison system) recommend Trump be located in a facility for watching impaired prisoners.

Senior Living Program

The Senior Living Program (SLP) is a unique and innovative program designed to meet the needs of older male incarcerated population. The SLP participants reside in one housing unit to facilitate the community setting. A computer lab, classrooms, meeting rooms, recreation/exercise rooms, and staff offices have all been designed and built in the same unit. SLP residents participate in programs together to develop cohesive, pro-social skills to prepare them well for community reentry.

To be eligible, all candidates must:

be 55 years of age or older

be within two to six years of their earliest release date,

be eligible for transfer to Ulster Correctional Facility

not have any current refusals of required programs,

not have Tier 3 disciplinary infractions within the past 12 months,

have completed SOCTP when a sex offender counseling need has been established

The SLP is a minimum of two years long and candidates must agree to actively participate in all required aspects of the program. The SLP strives to facilitate a safe and stable environment in which positive peer interaction and group processes will prepare incarcerated individuals for successful re-entry into society.

‘Religion is Such a Great Thing!’ Trump Gushes Over Evangelical Support Even After Porn Star Hush Money Convictions

Of course since Mr. Depends grants every wish of his Pulpit Pimp Posse.

Former President Donald Trump praised religion in the context of continued Evangelical support despite his convictions on conspiring to hide hush money payments to a porn star with whom he is alleged to have had an extramarital affair.

Trump sat with the co-hosts of Fox & Friends Weekend on Sunday — making news for falsely claiming that he never said “Lock her up!” with regards to his former political rival, Hillary Clinton. (He did.)

On Monday, Fox & Friends aired additional parts of the interview in which he took questions submitted by Fox News viewers, the last of which was from “Sharon from Alabama.” Rachel Campos Duffy read the question to Trump: “You’ve been faced with so much adversity and persecution for years. What’s your relationship with God like and how do you pray? “

Stormy to Melania—DUMP HIM!

Just days after Donald Trump’s conviction on business fraud charges in New York, Stormy Daniels is urging his wife Melania to leave the former president—but not for the reasons many might think. “I don’t know what their agreement may or may not be, but Melania needs to leave him. Not because of what he did with me or other women but because he is a convicted felon,” she told U.K. tabloid The Mirror Sunday. “It’s been proven he is abusive; he was found liable for sexual assault and tax fraud and is now a criminal. He’s neither Teflon Don nor Teflon Con anymore.” The former adult film star also speculated that Melania chose not to attend even a single day of Trump’s trial to avoid exposing Barron to the scandalous information being revealed and the dangerous atmosphere of the courthouse. “I would not want to expose my children to that dangerous environment,” Daniels said. “You know, if it was the other way around, even if I wanted to support my spouse or my family member, I would choose the safety and privacy of my child over attending court.” Melania has not spoken publicly following the trial—though Trump weighed in on her state of mind Sunday in an interview on Fox News, saying that the past week has been “very hard” on her. “She’s fine, but I think it’s very hard for her,” Trump said. “I mean, she’s fine. But she has to read all this crap.”

My sense of Judge Merchan sentencing Trump is that while Trump is a first time convicted felon, his long history of criminal conduct in NY and malfeasance, including the Trump Org conviction on business fraud, will come into play. While some people have suggested Trump will not see jail, I do think it’s likely he’s going to spend at least some time in prison.

Why? Because there are numerous and significant cases of business fraud leading to prison sentences, even for first time offenders.

Trump has shown a reckless disregard for facts, truth, and lies to the public about everything relating to the case (see the claim that he didn’t know what the charges even were, even though while under oath, he stated to the court that he did). He’s attacked the fundamental and bedrock principles of the criminal justice system, violated gag order repeatedly, putting officers of the court in jeopardy, putting jurors in jeopardy, and his actions warrant prison.

I think he’s going to spend a year in prison. That will probably be due to 34 counts of 1 year in prison, served concurrently. I do not think that he gets more than a year in prison, but he could get some combination of terms to result in jail time.

may cause electrical failures and decreased effectiveness of automobile brakes.

has been found in excised tumors of terminal cancer patients.

Despite the danger, dihydrogen monoxide is often used:

I’ve been thinking that given the civil judgement against Trump Org, even though the appeals court lowered the judgement value and stayed the bans, that now that Trump has been judged guilty of felony crimes using his business the only thing judge Merchan can do is make sure that Trump is unable to commit similar crimes with his business while serving whatever sentence.

Does this mean banning Trump from being involved in his businesses while Trump is serving some sort of probation?

House arrest will likely lead to a Galileo-complex by Trump, with him giving daily interviews from his Tower about how he is unfairly imprisoned in New York. This will be a fiasco in the first degree.

Marjorie Taylor Greene to push ‘defund New York’ plan in wake of Trump verdict

According to Politico, “Greene is planning to reinvigorate her push to defund special counsel Jack Smith as part of the appropriations process, we’re told — despite Speaker Mike Johnson telling Playbook last month that he thinks the idea is unworkable. But Greene won’t stop there. She’s planning a push to ‘defund New York’ by blocking the state from receiving any federal funds — including things like education and housing — an effort that could pick up support from MAGA hardliners.”

I am also hoping Democrats pick up on the fact that as a convicted felon Trump would never be able to get a security clearance to any of the documents that would cross the desk in the WH.

I hope Democrats hammer home fact that Trump is a convicted felon who was found guilty, not by the judge, but by a jury of New Yorkers - New Yorkers who have managed to see crime rates at multidecade lows under the current administration and NYPD, rates far lower than under notable right wing nutjob Rudy Giuliani (who was out there claiming that the city has gone to shit since he and Bloomberg left office).

It’s gone to shit for the criminals and seditionists. Crime rates are at multidecade lows. Getting Trump off the street will make it safer for all Americans. Getting Rudy off the street will make it safe for landscapers at the Four Seasons.

Could house arrest include like no Internet and who he can or can’t see or talk to? It’s house arrest. It’s supposed to be restrictive.

re: #129 lawhawk

I’m just imaging the usual “My client is a good boy” speech that whichever poor sod that pulls the short straw is gonna have to give to Judge Merchan. You know the speech: “My client’s got strong ties to the city (which he avoids like the plague since leaving office), that he’s done so much for it (by fucking over every contractor and supplier within it), that he’s a successful businessman (which is why he was fined an historic amount for accounting fraud), and no criminal record (because he’s spent decades buying everybody off). So the court should take all that into account, as well as good behavior (hey, no laughing in the back) during the course of the trial in imposing the lightest sentence possible.”

Limiting Trump from traveling outside of NYS while under house arrest is one thing. But that won’t keep people from coming to him.

Meanwhile in the Senate Moscow Mike Lee threatens to shut down the Senate.

WHAT TO WATCH ON THE HILL: A day after the verdict came down, Sen. MIKE LEE (R-Utah) led the Senate’s hard-core MAGA bloc in vowing to muck up the chamber’s business in protest of the convictions. Ten of them now say, “we are unwilling to aid and abet this White House in its project to tear this country apart” and will thus oppose and deny unanimous consent for Democratic legislation and confirmations.

Democrats are downplaying this threat, arguing that (1) most must-pass legislation is already taken care of for the year and (2) this isn’t exactly the “governing caucus” to begin with — many conservatives are already well-known for holding up Senate business.

But a closer look at the calendar suggests the effort could indeed cause Majority Leader CHUCK SCHUMER some headaches — particularly for nominations. So far this year, about half of non-military and non-Foreign Service nominees have been confirmed by voice vote, which requires agreement from all 100 senators and skips time-consuming procedural steps.

If the MAGA senators make good on their threats, Schumer could be forced to trudge through cloture votes and debate, eating up precious floor time that he might prefer to expend on election-year messaging bills such the contraception legislation he’s planning to bring up this week. And remember: The calendar is already slimmed down for election season.

If Trump wins, he could weaponize U.S. spy services against his domestic political enemies, ex intel officers warn

A former national security official who served under Trump said, “I haven’t talked to a single senior person who said, ‘Don’t worry, he’ll be fine.’”

Donald Trump could turn America’s spy services into weapons of “retribution” against domestic political opponents, skew intelligence findings in favor of authoritarian leaders and undermine information sharing with U.S. allies if he wins a second term, more than a dozen former intelligence officers, Western officials and lawmakers tell NBC News.

Given Trump’s track record during and after his first term, including his public remarks lambasting the intelligence services, his alleged mishandling of classified information, his vows to seek vengeance against his political opponents, and plans by his allies to purge large numbers of career civil servants deemed to be members of a “deep state” cabal, former intelligence officers worry that the spy agencies could suffer irreparable damage.

“I’m very concerned. And I think almost every one of my former colleagues and current colleagues in the intelligence community is very concerned,” said a former national security official who served under Trump. “I haven’t talked to a single senior person who said, ‘Oh, it’s overblown. Don’t worry, he’ll be fine.’”

This article is based on interviews with more than a dozen former intelligence officers, many of whom worked in the Trump administration and had face-to-face meetings with the then-president, as well as Western officials and members of Congress.

There are few legal parameters defining the president’s power over the intelligence agencies, and Trump would have tremendous leeway if he chose to expand the number of political appointees at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the CIA and other agencies, according to Glenn Gerstell, who worked as general counsel for the National Security Agency from 2015 to 2020.

When it comes to the president’s authority over the intelligence community, “the law allows for a hell of a lot of discretion” and Trump would have “a pretty free hand,” said Gerstell.

“If a determined president, supported by a group of senior aides who will both support and enable him and not object, wishes to do his bidding throughout the entire executive branch, there are few practical limits on his ability to do so, unless Congress has the political will to step in,” he said. “The law is going to be pushed pretty far before it’s actually going to produce a counterreaction.”

Another question: the appeals panel changed the civil judgement against the Trump Org and its officers, including staying the banning of said officers from certain actions.

Now that Trump has been found guilty of felonies in using his company’s funds, can Merchan reinstate a ban on Donald Trump?

I gather that if Trump is under parole that a condition of that parole may involve limiting Trump from participating in the company(s) by which he committed his crimes?

But Greene won’t stop there. She’s planning a push to ‘defund New York’ by blocking the state from receiving any federal funds — including things like education and housing — an effort that could pick up support from MAGA hardliners.”

Possibly. But for how long? One week per conviction? One month per conviction?

Given Trump has a rap sheet of civil judgements, and has publicly shown no remorse for those actions that led to the civil judgements, what judge would not at least require some controls to be on the guilty?

House arrest will not discourage Trump from continuing to commit crimes. The judge has to know this.

If it was me, I would tell Trump he is the most dangerous man in America, explaining exactly why that is, give him the maximum four years on each count (to run concurrently, so he would serve four years, max) and give him a date certain to surrender himself, in August. Yeah, you don’t do that.

Defendants, on the other hand, if they make a statement that engages in those kinds of attacks may also find themselves in contempt, and watch their own sentencing get increased due to the unrepentant nature and malice.

Why I think Trump will not be located behind bars: he has SS protection for life.

And I can’t imagine any NY jail or prison facility that will allow federal agents armed with automatic weapons constantly being in said facility.

So I suspect that Merchan will simply let Trump out on probation. Hopefully for a full 4 years, requiring Trump to remain in NY the whole time, and to have no contact with any criminal, which rules out some of his associates being in contact with him.

Also, a big fine would be nice. Merchan can direct that it goes to public agencies that help people with businesses, as this was a business crime.

And since the crimes involved paying off a sex worker, it’d be nice if Merchan required Trump to pay a nice chunk of change to charities that help in sex trafficking.

This is wonderful. Larry Hogan is a serious threat to give the GOP control of the US Senate, because he was the popular Governor of Maryland so Democrats are use to voting for him. But now Trump World is going to war against Hogan because he said people should respect the verdict convicting Trump. Mitch McConnell is rolling in the coffin he sleeps in at night.

Personally, I think it’d be a huge miscarriage of justice for Trump to avoid jail time. He’s a habitual fraudster and although this is the first criminal conviction, his business is guilty of fraud, he has been found liable for massive civil fraud, and he’s been found liable for rape. If anyone doesn’t deserve downward sentencing, it’s this guy. Add to that his total and complete lack of remorse and his total and complete criminal contempt for the court, and there’s no way a poor Black man would walk out of there with probation. It just wouldn’t happen.

Trump should go in, and I hope Merchan and Bragg are in agreement on this.

January 6 they had a specific target they could concentrate on and they caught the government flat-footed. Next January, the Capitol will be sealed up tight the day Congress confirms the electoral vote and on inauguration day, so the terrorist threat is more likely to be sporadic attacks on polling stations and election headquarters where ballots are collected and counted. Hopefully, some of the new Proud Boy recruits are FBI informants, so they can uncover any plans for election related terror attacks.

It remains to be seen, but all signs point to “Yes.” To give an idea, there was a poll released a couple weeks ago showing where the parties stood two weeks after the local counsel elections. In that poll, Reform UK had lost 4 points since the elections, yet the Conservatives had only see a 1 point bump in theirs. True, probably: I can’t see where bleeding support on their Right is going to help the Cons in the least: more likely it will just add to the margins for whoever else is running against them: Labour most places, I’d guess.
Ideally both the Tories AND Reform will fail badly enough to marginalize themselves (hopefully into near-oblivion).

I think he’s going to spend a year in prison. That will probably be due to 34 counts of 1 year in prison, served concurrently. I do not think that he gets more than a year in prison, but he could get some combination of terms to result in jail time.

House arrest has to be more likely. Cohen spent 13 months in prison and a year and a half in home confinement (due to Covid?). It has to be simpler, given his SS detail, to confine him to an apartment in NY. However, if the other trials take place and he’s convicted, he deserves to be in the slammer for the rest of his life.

A juror in the Feeding Our Future case was excused Monday morning after prosecutors said an unidentified individual went to the juror’s house on Sunday night and offered a bag containing $120,000 in cash and another bag if she voted for acquittal.

The trial is of 7 people allegedly involved with stealing $41 million from the federal government that was meant to feed children during the Covid pandemic.

The trial is part of a larger investigation into the alleged theft of $250 million from the Child Nutrition Program. Seventy defendants have been charged in what has become known as the Feeding Our Future case; 18 have pleaded guilty and await sentencing.

Well, according to the rundown (via NYT); the preliminary results aren’t a simple either/or situation: both Sheinbaum and Gálvez (the main candidates) are heads of multi-party coalitions, and the votes seem to done along a party-slate basis. Can you transmit bird flu without showing symptoms first?

Unfortunately, we don’t know because there has not been a lot of research of H5N1 in humans. The writer of the article suggests asymptomatic cases are possible and could be a problematic transmission source.

They bulldozed all the structures on Johnston, and tore up the runways. Its a bird preserve now, and off limits. I wanted to fly the coral route back when I worked for the airlines, Honolulu to Johnston, Majuro, Kwajelein, Kosrae, Phonpei, Yap, and then Guam. I could never find a flight home out of Guam that wasn’t completely full.

Just out of College, She Who Must Be Obeyed did a USO Tour that included Johnston Atoll. I landed and refueled there on an outbound flight to Australia on a Pacific Tanker Task Force tour. They were burning nerve gas at the time.

‘Suspend!’ Marjorie Taylor Greene smacked down by GOP chair at hearing with Dr. Fauci

rawstory.com

Democrats called for the words of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) to be taken down after she refused to call former National Institutes of Health Director Anthony Fauci “doctor.”

The conflict came during a Monday House Oversight Committee hearing on the origins of COVID-19.

“Do the American people deserve to be abused like that, Mr. Fauci?” Greene asked. “Because you’re not doctor, you’re Mr. Fauci in my few minutes.”

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) interrupted to say Greene was breaking committee rules.

“Mr. Chairman, just in terms of the rules of decorum, are we allowed to deny that a doctor is a doctor just because we don’t want him to be a doctor?” Raskin said.

“Yes, because in my time, that man does not deserve to have a license,” Greene shot back. “As a matter of fact, it should be revoked, and he belongs in prison.”

“Suspend!” Republican Chairman Brad Wenstrup (OH) told Greene. “The gentlelady should recognize the doctor as a doctor.”

“Is this what we have become?” one Democrat complained. “Is this what we have devolved into? No decorum.”

“That’s completely unacceptable to be able to deny Dr. Fauci, who’s here, a respected member of the medical community, his title,” he added. “And that’s actually a personal attack on his character.”

“And I have instructed her to address him as a doctor,” Wenstrup noted.

“I’m not addressing him as a doctor,” Greene said.

“We should have to take her words down,” a Democratic member demanded.

“Mr. Chairman, I’d like to make a point of order,” Greene interrupted. “Because they accused us of worshipping President Trump. We don’t worship President Trump.”

“Gentlelady will suspend!” Wenstrup demanded. “The rule on taking down words does not apply to a witness. Again, I’m not condoning the words.”

“The chair overrules the point of order by the gentleman from Maryland but asks that members please afford all other members the respect they’re entitled, refrain from using rhetoric that could be construed as an attack on the motives or character of another member, or the witness,” he added.

With that, Greene was allowed to continue.

“You belong in prison, Dr. Fauci,” she said.

Landed there going and coming on a trip to Kwaj. I think that qualifies me to be a tour guide. My officemate did a couple weeks there, and had to shave his signature beard to fit his mask. Looked like a turtle out of its shell.

For a far less serious offense — and she was polite during the whole process and during her whole time in prison.

My contractor and his crew are working on the garage - they poured a new concrete water barrier along the old garage opening. I went out to talk to them and I said, “Hey, you built a wall! Can we get Mexico to pay for it?” They all busted up laughing (they’re all Mexican).

I’m usually pretty slow to join these calls, but this isn’t the first time she’s been completely out of order. She’s uncontrollable. If this was AOC, she would’ve already been censured multiple times, and a call to the sergeant-at-arms to remove her from the chamber would probably not be far behind.

And I’m guessing that as campaign season wears on, she’s only going to get worse. And tossing her skanky ass out of the Committees, or even out of the House entirely is only going to make her look “tougher” in the bleary eyes of the hardcore MAGA base who is her main audience.

Hot take: Amend the US Constitution so that both Senators and Representatives are elected to 20-year terms, subject to mandatory expulsion for certain triggering events (indictment for corruption or abuse of power, medical determination of being unfit to hold office), and universal and immediate recall elections for both offices once an initiative with enough valid signatures from the represented area has been presented to the state’s Secretary of State. Make it so that representatives don’t spend their whole time in the legislature passing performative gibberish as part of their campaign platform; they have to actually do something, or the voters can send them packing at any time.

LA Times: Q&A: These researchers examined 20 years of data same-sex marriage. Here’s what they found

What did all that data tell you?
MZ: The headline from our new analysis is no negative impacts and some positive ones.

We see an increase in marriage, and that increase is driven not just by newly marrying same-sex couples, but also by an increase in marriage among different-sex couples. That was a bit surprising to us.

What is surprising is that legal same-sex marriage hasn’t led to people marrying their pets (as Speaker Mike Johnson once wrote in an editorial would be the result of legal same-sex marriage: vanityfair.com)

$240 a year is still a good value to me, as I use the service every day.

Spotify raised prices for its premium plans in the US on Monday, the latest step by the Swedish music-streaming service in its push to increase margins.

The company raised prices of its individual plan to $11.99 from $10.99 per month, duo plan to $16.99 from $14.99 and its family plan to $19.99 from $16.99 in its largest market by revenue.

Spotify has been trying to boost its margins in recent months by lowering marketing spending and through layoffs, after relying on promotions and hefty investments to drive user growth.

Shares of the company, which competes with services from Apple and Amazon, rose more than 4%.

If Trump wins, he could weaponize U.S. spy services against his domestic political enemies, ex intel officers warn

A former national security official who served under Trump said, “I haven’t talked to a single senior person who said, ‘Don’t worry, he’ll be fine.’”

……
“If a determined president, supported by a group of senior aides who will both support and enable him and not object, wishes to do his bidding throughout the entire executive branch, there are few practical limits on his ability to do so, unless Congress has the political will to step in,” he said. “The law is going to be pushed pretty far before it’s actually going to produce a counterreaction.”

nbcnews.com

It will not produce a counterreaction from the GOP hordes; there will be no way to stop him because the party is owned by him and they will fall in line. They are no different from the Nazi Party. All our institutions will fold before his onslaught. SCOTUS has already proved that they are in line with his evil and will not protect our nation (of course, they could surprise me with their immunity ruling — but I doubt it — unless Alito and Thomas are struck by lightning before the decision is released). There is no protection except preventing his election — and getting the House in Democratic hands and keeping the Senate Democratic. Anything less, and our nation is finished.

Not at all. Their intention was to concentrate power in the Congress, like the good republicans they were, but in the course of two hundred years, every crisis left more power in the hands of the executive.

Add to that that one party now consists of toadies who want their object of worship to rule them from the White House, and you have the situation in which we now find ourselves.

The anti-Federalists warned us about a Trump, but the Federalists were too blind to the danger.

Interesting idea. I’ve been thinking about different ideas that could hopefully make our government slightly better/more responsive to voters. Basic ideas:

1. abolish the electoral college, go to direct election. I’d even be fine with a run off election if nobody gets to 50%. I’d also expand the vote for president/vice-president to every American citizen over the age of 18 regardless of where they live (so people in the territories or living abroad could vote)

2. expand the House via the Wyoming Rule - basically whatever the population of the smallest state is, that is the size of districts everywhere. Smaller districts, especially in bigger states, should lead to representatives who actually represent their voters.

3a. expand the Senate by giving every state 3 senators - so every state has a senate election ever two years.

3b. abolish the senate (there was actually a proposed amendment to do this) and go to a unicameral legislature. In this scenario, I would expand House terms to either 4, 5, or 6 years and also allow for the calling of snap elections as in many parliaments around the world.

I also like the idea of making the House a national vote with proportional representation but I equally don’t like the idea of strengthening the parties in that manner. To counter balance it, we could make the Senate single member districts based on population (basically what the House is now) - but this would probably technically require an entirely new constitution rather than just some amendments due to the language of Article V.

re: #287 Hecuba’s daughter

not really, because neither the Federalists nor the anti-Federalists were on board with universal suffrage or direct elections. They envisioned members of the electoral college exercising independent judgment in voting for president and vice-president. That pretty quickly fell apart and since then we’ve been overlaying a direct election on top of an indirect election in a way that doesn’t really work.

re: #288 KGxvi

Making the House and Senate each have 8 year terms would mean that turnover from a GOP majority to a Dem majority (or vice versa) would occur at a glacial pace or not at all, because of the intrinsic power of incumbency. The House was designed to be more reactionary and represent people at a more base level. Expand the house significantly - it hasn’t been done despite US population more than 3 times higher than the last time it was expanded - in 1913.

Expanding the House would also add numbers to the EC, and if you couple that with the Wyoming rule, then you have a path forward.

Reform SCOTUS.
Reform Congress.

GOP/MAGA solution is scrapping everything in favor of an authoritarian kleptocracy.

yeah, I wouldn’t want to expand the terms of office for Congress or the President. I do think expanding the House is the “easiest” path forward, but without some of the other reforms (like abolishing the EC), I don’t think it would completely solve the underlying problems.
