Murtha is untouchable -
A federal appeals court ruled Tuesday that Rep. John P. Murtha (D-Pa.) cannot be sued for defamation or slander stemming from comments he made regarding the death of Iraqi civilians in Haditha in November 2005.
A Marine involved in that incident, Sgt. Frank Wuterich, sued Murtha for libel and defamation after the lawmaker said the civilian deaths were “cold-blooded murder and war crimes'' in several public appearances.
Wuterich wanted to depose Murtha, and a federal judge initially backed Wuterich.
But the Bush Justice Department sided with Murtha, arguing that Murtha was acting within his official duties as a congressman when he made the Haditha comments and thus couldn’t be sued under the Federal Tort Claims Act. That legislation protects government officials from legal action over official duties.
The Justice Dept. appealed the lower court ruling to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, and that court sided with Murtha and the Justice Department Tuesday.
The appeals court stated that Wuterich “has not alleged any facts that even remotely suggest that Congressman Murtha was acting outside the scope of his employment when he spoke about the Haditha incident.”
The court added that Wuterich’s complaint was a “fishing expedition” that should not have been allowed to proceed even as far as it has.

I would like to propose a unit of measure for our LGF Karma scores. We measure distance using miles as a shorthand to expressing all distances in feet, for example. We measure the heat of peppers using a unit of measure called Scovilles (Jalapenos are about 5k Scovilles and Serranos are about 10k).
I propose that we refer to our Karma using a new measure called Sharmutas! A Sharmuta is equal to 1,000 Karma points. That would put my Karma at about 0.7 Sharmutas. Sharmuta currently has about 75 Sharmutas to her Karmic credit.
Who's with me in establishing our new Karma yardstick?

They are going to get the private insurance company...
A House committee today approved legislation that would put a state-chartered workers' compensation fund firmly back under state control as negotiations over whether to use money from the fund to balance the state budget continued.
Senate Bill 281, sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Brandon Shaffer, D-Longmont, would make it clear that Pinnacol Assurance, the quasi-governmental agency that offers guaranteed workers' compensation insurance, is a part of state government and could not operate as an independent mutual insurance company.

CAIR: Defending Muslim Student “Rights”?The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is claiming that local colleges are not protecting the rights of predominantly Somali Muslim college students. CAIR claims that it has received “numerous reports” by Muslim students that they are being “interrogated” by FBI agents. The students are being questioned as part of an on-going investigation into the whereabouts of several male Somali students whom have gone missing and are suspected of leaving the US to fight in Somalia’s long-running civil war.
CAIR-Minnesota (CAIR-MN) Civil Rights Director Taneeza Islam states:
“Students' legal rights need to be upheld and they aren't currently being afforded the only true legal protection they have when talking to the law enforcement - an attorney."
Islam’s concern is "confirmed" by this example of the FBI’s "brutal" interrogation methods involving a Muslim student. From an article titled “Pressure By FBI Puts Somalis In Bind”:
“In December, one of her friends who works for the University of Minnesota police approached her, saying the FBI would like to talk about her organization. The agent, she said, was polite and made it clear she could refuse to talk. "He wanted to know how we got funded and what activities we do," she said of the 20-minute interview. He also wanted to know "how some of the missing boys were involved in the organization," she said, adding she never felt pressured.”
So, the FBI agent explained "she didn’t have to talk" and the student stated the agent was polite?
Where is the coercion? What “rights” did the FBI agent not explain?
Considering CAIR’s reputation when it comes to providing legal advice; buyer beware. In addition to the numerous proven allegations that CAIR is directly tied to Islamic terrorism and individual Islamic terrorists, CAIR has also been accused of providing shoddy legal advice to the very North American Muslim population it claims to represent and protect. (What does it say about CAIR when they apparently set off to deliberately commit fraud against American Muslims?)
So why would it "appear" that Somali Muslim students turned to CAIR for legal advice? The simple answer is --- they didn’t. Nowhere does CAIR even make the claim that CAIR supplied any legal advice to any of the students in question. Would it be outside the realm of possibility that CAIR completely fabricated the claim that “numerous” students filed complaints with them?
We also learn that apparently none of the students interviewed for the article had anything bad to say about the FBI. None of the students stated that they were abused, denied rights, or forced to answer any questions. None were taken into custody.
For instance, the opening line from the article:
“When the FBI approached the young women at the University of Minnesota, they said they didn't mind talking.”
Does this sound like abuse, or a case where Muslim Somali students are responding to legitimate FBI concerns? ..... Just what is CAIR’s game? ...

Oh that. When I posted that pic in a previous thread I didn't notice the metal codpiece and oddly familiar protuberance until I had posted the comment and was checking the links. At that point I knew I had to point it out later. It was a stretch, but you have to agree with my point, everything is scarier with a penis, right?
No I don't have to agree. I still am concerned with why you even post a Cylon and a cod piece.
Never mind. It just seemed like an odd image to have right at hand as a response to a comment.
For me, that would be a six pack of Mickeys and a few joints to conjure up that response.

The gun culture is in turmoil right now, with no sign at all that panic buying and hoarding have run their course. Take a look at 9mm handguns on Gun Genie, a popular search site run by a major wholesaler. 215 different models are listed, only a handful are available. Even ammunition in this caliber is very hard to find, though millions of rounds are manufactured every day around the world.
The same is true of military style rifles, the notorious "assault weapons" of liberal myth and lore. This is all fueled by the fear that the Obama administration can, and soon will, either ban the sale of these weapons outright or put a prohibitive tax on them.
Is this paranoia or an excess of caution? There is no doubt at all that this administration is anti-gun, but their rhetoric on the subject has so far exceeded any real action by a pretty good margin. The assault weapons ban is a slam-dunk in liberal minds but even that has yet to be implemented. A general ban on handguns would be orders of magnitude more difficult to pass.

Islam (Arabic: الإسلام; al-'islām (help·info); pronounced [ɪs.ˈlæːm][note 1]) is a monotheistic, Abrahamic religion originating with the teachings of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, a 7th century Arab religious and political figure.
They keep calling Mohammed a "prophet." What, exactly, did he prophesy? Moses, Samuel, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Amos, Zechariah, Micah, Jonah, Ezekiel, all prophesied of future events.
What makes Mohammed a "prophet"? Other than there are people who will cut your head off if you say he isn't.

It's going to be fine. It all came out of your own mind, so that's where the solution is. Deep cleansing breath.
I always find that when I'm stuck, backing up a few words, sentences, or paragraphs (depending on the degree of stuckness) and rewriting the parts that lead up to the sticky part helps a lot. Even though the preceding passage may be excellent in and of itself, it somehow led me astray and that's what needs fixing.

Two United Nations agencies spent millions in U.S. money on substandard Afghanistan construction projects, including a central bank without electricity and a bridge at risk of "life threatening" collapse, according to an investigation by U.S. federal agents.

Maybe it was the kind of problems I worked out, like how to get from point a to point c. One example is, how to explain what is going on to the main character without sounding like the bad villains who tell their nemesis their evil plan instead of killing him first.
I did find a great way in the story I'm thinking of, that actually makes sense in terms of the plot, and advances the plot.

You know there is one civilian shipping line that has never been pirated at. It is ZIM:
There is one shipping line that has not been hit by the pirates. It is the ZIM Integrated Shipping Services. Why is this? Because the Israeli crews are armed, to protect themselves and their ship. The pirates are not interested in taking on a crew, perhaps all of which have served and been trained in the Israeli Defense Force (IDF). They, apparently, don’t need the navies of the world to protect their ships. If I were shipping by container through one of the pirate infested areas, that is the company I would use. Other shipping companies might take a lesson from ZIM.

Show is looking good. It's a Ray Clooney British farce, written in the 70's. It's like 2 1/2 hours of Benny Hill. Four doors, two windows, 5 women in various states of undress, inanimate objects being moved around, mistaken identities (like 5 of them), coy gay jokes, when they were "salty," (does every British farce have to equate sailors and gay jokes and Portsmouth), people hiding behind door, drapes and couches and so on.
The only thing missing in this Ray Clooney script is an excess of drinking, very little in the script.
"Move Over Mrs. Markham" opens Friday at Miners Alley Playhouse for a 6 week run.

She wondered about ways to add some pizzazz to their sexual relationship, and finally decided to purchase some crotchless underwear she had seen in a lingerie shop.
One evening when she was feeling particularly desirous, and he was, as usual, watching television, she took a shower, freshened up, and donned the crotchless undies, and a slinky negligee.
She then strolled between her husband and the television, and suggestively tossed one leg up on his chair arm...
'Want some of this?' she purred.
'Are you shittin' me?' he replied..

Be my guest. :)
I was going to do a parady..I googled..
The last verse:
Deep in December, it's nice to remember,
Although you know the snow will follow.
Deep in December, it's nice to remember,
Without a hurt the heart is hollow.
Deep in December, it's nice to remember,
The fire of September that made us mellow.
Deep in December, our hearts should remember
And follow.
If I tried f'n with those lyrics, it would be like a kid spray painting a sign..

Hong Kong Christens an Ark of Biblical Proportions
HONG KONG -- This city's three billionaire Kwok brothers have just the answer for the rising waters threatening the global economy: the world's first life-size replica of Noah's ark, built to biblical specifications off the coast of this recession-struck Chinese financial center.
The message in its 450-foot-long hull, its rooftop luxury hotel and 67 pairs of fiberglass animals: "The financial tsunami will be over," says Spencer Lu, the Kwoks' project director at Noah's Ark, which is opening soon.
The land-bound ark wasn't built in response to the current global turmoil; it has been in the planning for 17 years. But the financial storm provides a nice marketing hook for the Kwoks' ambitious project, which will probably need to lure visitors from beyond Hong Kong's city limits to be an economic success.

I was right.
Newsweek did its annual Christer-bashing, right on schedule, sure as the sun rises in the east.
Bozell column: The End of Newsweek?
Newsweek greeted the coming of Easter with a black cover, and the headline "The Decline and Fall of Christian America," spelled out in red in the shape of a cross. Inside, it was more declarative: "The End of Christian America." Why? Because they found that the percentage of self-identified Christians had fallen 10 points since 1990. Okay, then let’s compare. How much has Newsweek’s circulation fallen since 1990? Just since 2007, their announced circulation has dropped by 52 percent. It would be more plausible to state "The End of Newsweek."
One has to wonder whether Newsweek’s financial gurus really think it’s a smart business strategy to greet the Easter season with funerals for "Christian America," and greet the Christmas season by making the "religious case for gay marriage"? (That’s not to mention all the reverent Obama worship in between.)
Read the whole thing.

NEW School prayer: -
Now I sit me down in school
Where praying is against the rule
For this great nation under God
Finds mention of Him very odd.
If Scripture now the class recites,
It violates the Bill of Rights.
And anytime my head I bow
Becomes a Federal matter now.
Our hair can be purple, orange or green,
That's no offense; it's a freedom scene.
The law is specific, the law is precise.
Prayers spoken aloud are a serious vice.
For praying in a public hall
Might offend someone with no faith at all.
In silence alone we must meditate,
God's name is prohibited by the state.
We're allowed to cuss and dress like freaks,
And pierce our noses, tongues and cheeks.
They've outlawed guns, but FIRST the Bible
To quote the Good Book makes me liable.
We can elect a pregnant Senior Queen,
And the 'unwed daddy,' our Senior King.
It's 'inappropriate' to teach right from wrong,
We're taught that such 'judgments' do not belong.
We can get our condoms and birth controls,
Study witchcraft, vampires and totem poles...
But the Ten Commandments are not allowed,
No word of God must reach this crowd.
It's scary here I must confess,
When chaos reigns the school's a mess.
So, Lord, this silent plea I make:
Should I be shot; My soul please take!
Amen

In reptilian conspiracy literature, a sunken Pacific continent (usually styled as Lemuria or Mu) is sometimes posited as the homeland of a reptilian race of creatures, often identified with dragons or nagas. Various bits of mythology and folklore are assembled in support, such as the Cambodian naga traditions. Folkloric claims of Australian aborigines sighting "dinosaur-like" creatures are also often viewed as evidence. The earliest attestation of such notions in modern literature seems to have occurred in the works of H.P. Blavatsky, notably in The Secret Doctrine (1888), where she writes of "Dragon-men" who once had a mighty civilization on a Lemurian continent, until their rampant use of black magic brought about the end of their civilization, and their continent sank. Blavatsky in turn claims to have obtained this information from The Book of Dzyan. However, many beleive that Blavatsky invented the book herself. Blavatsky believed that the terms "Dragon-men" or "Serpent-men" used to describe the Lemurian Lizard Beings in the Book of Dzyan were symbolic, intended to symbolize their advanced knowledge and magical powers.
Other occurrences of the idea seem to be in the Alley Oop (1932) comic-strip, and the Brazilian Piteco (1964), where lands named Moo (or "Mu") and Lem (adapted from Mu and Lemuria respectively) are presented as dinosaur-infested lands. This matched H. P. Lovecraft's descriptions of the city of R'lyeh in his Cthulhu Mythos.
Our scoffing is therefore simply misdirection but I dare the proles to prove that.

The staff of Fox's "Glenn Beck" show is used to a fair share of theatrics from the self-proclaimed "rodeo clown" host. (See when he simulated dousing a guest with gasoline.) That could explain why nobody initially moved when Beck's guest, Columbia professor David Buckner, passed out during Monday's interview.
Buckner, who was discussing the causes of bankruptcy when he lost consciousness, is reported to be doing fine, and even later had the energy to apologize to Beck for the scene. Beck responded, in typical Beck-ian fashion:
"Are you kidding me? The ratings will go through the roof!"

They even handed out digital cameras and asked them to hold them up.Take a look at the picture at AP and notice all the cameras are the same models? Coincidence? I think not.

Yes, but it was a bronze sculpture. The patina actually is a protective cover against most forms of corrosion. Just the way it is.

A gynecologist had become fed up with malpractice insurance and HMO paperwork and was burned out. Hoping to try another career where skillful hands would be beneficial, he decided to become a mechanic. He went to the local technical college, signed up for classes, attended diligently, and learned all he could. When the time for the practical exam approached, the gynecologist prepared carefully for weeks and completed the exam with tremendous skill.
When the results came back, he was surprised to find that he had obtained a score of 150%. Fearing an error, he called the instructor, saying, "I don't want to appear ungrateful for such an outstanding result, but I wonder if there is an error in the grade."
The instructor said, "During the exam, you took the engine apart perfectly, which was worth 50% of the total mark. "You put the engine back together again perfectly, which is also worth 50% of the mark."
After a pause, the instructor added, "I gave you an extra 50% because you did it all through the muffler, which I've never seen done in my entire life.

On a completely random note: Intel announced earnings of $0.11 per share - dismal by historical standards, but beating consensus expectations of $0.03 per share, a huge margin. Look for techs to spike tomorrow.
I sort of expect that this is how earnings season is going to go; expectations are horribly pessimistic and easy to beat, so the potential for at least some short-term gains seems strong.

As bad as this seems, think of what would happen if the suit was upheld, and we had Republicans with the balls to criticize ACORN, and ACORN sued.
Or CAIR.
Kosh's Shadow -
As long as they do it within the "Halls of Congress" - OK. AND - criticism is NOT the Issue. Slander and Libel IS. Look at it it like this:
A. I believe that CAIR is beholden to the Islamic Brotherhood. This is NOT Actionable. Truth is a Positive Defense.
B. CAIR, and all of its members/contributors are Traitors. This IS Actionable.
It slanders members who might have NO IDEA of what might be the goals of an Organization that they adhere to because of their "birthright" faith in Islam.
Trust me on this one - my boss is a Sephardic Jew with an Arabic "Family Name" - He gets appeals asking for "Zakat" - i.e. Islamic Charity along with those asking for "T'zdakah" - Jewish Charity. Guess which ones HE contributes to? This is an EASY One.

Were they separated and allowed/denied entry based on whether they signalled that they voted for Obama?
This is what has been reported. The issue with the cameras is not that they were "bought off" by giving them a free camera. The contention there is that they were given cameras and told to hold them up like they're taking lots and lots of pics of Obama, so that the PRESS COULD GET GOOD PICTURES of the troops snapping pics of the president, in a mass of military adulation.
I have no reason to doubt that this was done.

Pete Hoekstra (R-MI) and with your help, future governor of Michigan, wants to counter UN children's treaty that would UNDERMINE US parents' rights in the US, with an amendment to protect US parents' rights & responsibilities to bring up their children as they see fit, giving government the right to intervene in case of abuse, but based on our constitution.
Please remember Pete Hoekstra as one of the good guys, when you vote in Michigan for governor.

Yes, he definitely seems to be the more playful parent. That was obvious in the storyreading yesterday too. But Malia seems engaged and interested, and she is (just barely) old enough to be, at least, a second-in-command caretaker. 2. Do you think the troops look like a bunch of lefties bought off by a digital camera ? Damn fine acting if you ask me. Maybe, just maybe, they all don't hate the guy even if they didn't all vote for him.
There's exactly one picture in that slide show that shows Obama being "wildly greeted " and I'm count a half dozen identical cameras.

re: #581 Taqiyyotomist
Were they separated and allowed/denied entry based on whether they signalled that they voted for Obama?
This is what has been reported. The issue with the cameras is not that they were "bought off" by giving them a free camera. The contention there is that they were given cameras and told to hold them up like they're taking lots and lots of pics of Obama, so that the PRESS COULD GET GOOD PICTURES of the troops snapping pics of the president, in a mass of military adulation.
I have no reason to doubt that this was done.
OK the camergate link says
"Take a look at the picture at AP and notice all the cameras are the same models? Coincidence? I think not."
When you go the the link I provided, the camera are different. To believe this one, we have to assume:
The troops would not bring there own camera to a meeting with the POTUS, that the POTUS'
s staff bought and supplied a bunch of different cameras and loaned them to the troops, then gathered them back up.
Out of that whole deal, one soldier sends a e-mail home describing the scam, the rest keep the secret. If the right runs with this story, it'll turn out badly IMHO.

I agree the blame game played by democrats is disingenuous, when Democrats have controlled Congress since 2006, or nearly three years.
Still and all, it is difficult to be First Lady and have to be "perfect" in the ways we expect our first family to be.
Unlike the rest of us, Michelle can't get fat & be a couch potato when she feels like it.
It is gruelling being "on" all day every day, and a strain on ANY human being. I suspect the Obamas will grow more understanding of Pres. Bush and the Bush family's dilemmas and challenges as fellow inhabitors of the White House.

Plus, these are lovely dogs - it's hard not to love them.
They just need some time out of the sight of cameras. Perhaps the biggest problem will be that the person best suited to handling the dog (POTUS) has the least time and travels the most. They'll do fine, I think. In any case, they have connections to trainers who can help them if they need it.

Evening lizards.
I'm here for the discussion, but working behind the scenes.... I'm having a helluva time with a virus that my son accidentally downloaded. It looks like antivirus software but behaves like a Trojan, and it's wreaking havoc with Windows XP.
It's called "personal antivirus", and it's really a bitch to get rid of.
It self installed this morning and I've been trying to find a tool to remove it all day, to no avail.
Help?

I'm not following you. From what I can tell, getting the records of military personnel standardized and in portable electronic form is a very good thing. We've been working on it for over 10 years, but haven't gotten very far. Go figure. But if the O can make progress, I say that's in his plus column.
Am I missing something?
These records will not be as protected- they will be hackable, virus able, and well, I just do not trust computers that much yet. . .Look at what is going on with Charles. . .:)

Michelle Obama went from working woman to First Lady.
Depends on the meaning of working. Yes she had a job. Nothing she had to apply for. It was basically given to her for favors. And you forget she's been a politician's wife for some years. One would think she would have already learned how to operate in the public eye.

* * * *
Mrs. Bush and Mrs. Reagan and Hillary Rodham Clinton were governors' wives first, and Laura Bush's mother-in-law Barbara was first lady. So all these first ladies had experience being traditional ceremonial helpmeets to their husbands.Michelle Obama went from working woman to First Lady. She went from being the Alpha person, to a supporting role in which she is judge by her appearance, more than anything. It's a hard act. I appreciate the effort she is making.

re: #39 MJBrutus
In college (where else), one night while drinking we came up with the "stump ratio" (we may not have been the first, but we were the first that night). The "stump ratio" was simply a person's height divided by a person's width (H/W). Taller, skinner people had high "stump ratios" (H>W, or H/W>1). Stump ratios less than 1 were fun for conversation. Anyway, the point of this is that I've thought about this before and the same thing could be done with a ratio, say Karma points/comments (K/C). Sharmuta, for example, would have a K/C ratio of 1.42 (base on post #443).
Then you could develop a scale. Anyone with K/C>1 means they have more Karma points than comments (superhero). For the other end of the spectrum, spacejesus would be a -2.26 (even with the 55 updings last night).

I was at the Stadium the day Wells pitched a Perfect Game. That was boring as shit thru 5 or 6 and then it got real interesting real fast. The whole stadium was humming.
I saw Nolan Ryan throw his 7th.
I lived just a few hundred feet from the edge of the parking lots at Arlington stadium.
I walked over in the 7th and watched the last 6 outs.
2007 I had Tigers Season tix.
gave away a nothing Tuesday night game to a lady I work with so she could take her 5 year old son to a game.
Verlander threw a no no.

re: #767 Unakite
Just a thought.
Oh yeah, you're talking about the Sharmuta quotient.

Oh, sorry for the long-winded answer. I'm with you. :)

Taliban Execute Couple Seeking to Elope
KABUL (April 14) - A Taliban firing squad killed a young couple in southwestern Afghanistan for trying to elope, shooting them with AK-47s in front of a crowd in a lawless, militant-controlled region, officials said Tuesday.
The woman, 19-year-old Gul Pecha, and the man, 21-year-old Abdul Aziz, were accused by the militants of immoral acts, and a council of conservative clerics decided that the two should be killed, officials said.
The two had hoped to travel to Iran, which borders their home province of Nimroz, but their parents sent villagers to bring them home, said Sadiq Chakhansori, the chief of the provincial council.
Once back home, the pair was either turned over to the Taliban by their parents or the militants took them by force, the officials said, providing slightly varying accounts.

There's gonna be some dead pirates.
Yo Ho Ho And A Bottle Of Rum
Fifteen men on a dead man's chest
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum
Drink and the devil had done for the rest
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.
The mate was fixed by the bosun's pike
The bosun brained with a marlinspike
And cookey's throat was marked belike
It had been gripped by fingers ten;
And there they lay, all good dead men
Like break o'day in a boozing ken.
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.
. Fifteen men of the whole ship's list
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!
Dead and be damned and the rest gone whist!
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!
The skipper lay with his nob in gore
Where the scullion's axe his cheek had shore
And the scullion he was stabbed times four
And there they lay, and the soggy skies
Dripped down in up-staring eyes
In murk sunset and foul sunrise
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.
Fifteen men of 'em stiff and stark
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!
Ten of the crew had the murder mark!
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!
Twas a cutlass swipe or an ounce of lead
Or a yawing hole in a battered head
And the scuppers' glut with a rotting red
And there they lay, aye, damn my eyes
Looking up at paradise
All souls bound just contrariwise
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.
Fifteen men of 'em good and true
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!
Ev'ry man jack could ha' sailed with Old Pew,
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!
There was chest on chest of Spanish gold
With a ton of plate in the middle hold
And the cabins riot of stuff untold,
And they lay there that took the plum
With sightless glare and their lips struck dumb
While we shared all by the rule of thumb,
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!
More was seen through a sternlight screen...
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum
Chartings undoubt where a woman had been
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.
'Twas a flimsy shift on a bunker cot
With a dirk slit sheer through the bosom spot
And the lace stiff dry in a purplish blot
Oh was she wench or some shudderin' maid
That dared the knife and took the blade
By God! she had stuff for a plucky jade
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.
Fifteen men on a dead man's chest
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum
Drink and the devil had done for the rest
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.
We wrapped 'em all in a mains'l tight
With twice ten turns of a hawser's bight
And we heaved 'em over and out of sight,
With a Yo-Heave-Ho! and a fare-you-well
And a sudden plunge in the sullen swell
Ten fathoms deep on the road to hell,
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!

Since the thread downstairs is mostly dead, I am reposting.
I may get dinged for this, but there has always been a bit of hypocrisy coming from DHS issues.
The founding fathers were very frightened of the slippery slope to tyranny. In order to prevent this, amongst many other things, they came up with forbidding the government from doing illegal search and seizure. American citizens were to expect that their private lives, private communications and private spaces were to be private. The government would not be allowed to just label or punish someone without a fair trial.
I was opposed to warrantless wiretapping and many of the things that DHS does from the start. Back when the GOP violated the constitution, I read endless accounts here about, "well I have nothing to hide... let them look... they are looking for terrorists. OK."
Do you still have nothing to hide? Why don't you trust the government to look into your affairs and put labels on you without court oversight now? I am not writing this to be a prick. The government certainly needs to be able to enforce the law and keep tabs on the bad guys - however, they need to obey the law when they do it.
I am writing this to say it was bad then and it is bad now. If you are only nowgetting freaked out all of a sudden, the only difference is that you think that Obama is your foe, whereas you trusted Bush more. The founding fathers would not have trusted themselves with the powers we have granted the federal government. Our side started the trip down this slope.
The good news is that actually tracking neo-nazis is a good thing. The bad news is the fact that we still do not have transparency in how that happens legally and it will be very difficult to turn back the clock if and when an American government decides to abuse the power we so gleefully gave it.

Pirates Attack U.S.-Flagged Ship Off Somali Coast in Unsuccessful New Hijacking Attempt
Tuesday, April 14, 2009

Pirates attacked an American-flagged ship Tuesday in an unsuccessful new hijacking attempt off of the coast of Somalia.
After being attacked, the Liberty Sun, with a crew of about 20 Americans, reached out to the U.S. Coast Guard which resulted in the eventual dispatch of the USS Bainbridge, which arrived several hours later after the pirates had already left.
It was not immediately clear if the Liberty Sun was flying the flag at the time of the assault.

:0) Not an island (but love the song). Unakite is a type of rock that was name from the Unaka mountains in North Carolina (silly geology lesson for the day).

The absolutely most un-PC product ever made and still on the market. Candy Cigarettes. (That is assuming you can't buy those giant wax lips anymore. )
You can still find those giant wax lips if you look around -- the difference is they're now called something innocuous like "fun lips," instead of using a gratuitous racial or ethnic slur.
