That's exactly how it went down when I had a heart attack last year. I really, really thought that was it. I faded away and thought I would never wake up. It wasn't bad at all, some regret at leaving so soon, but no fear or trauma. The detached observer in me came to the fore. So this is what it's like, I thought, I've always wondered.
I was amazed when I woke up a minute later; and profoundly happy: I felt like jumping off the table and dancing, hallelujah, another chance.

I'd like just another go around. The whole concept of heaven bores me, no worries, perfect contentment, I need some contrast, say a regular life, with it's challenges, up's and down's and the rest. The good news, if you die, and there is nothing, you won't be disappointed, you'll just be dead.

To (mis)quote Cleavon Little (Blazing Saddles?)
"Where the (black people) at?" (not to mention the asians, arabs, hindu indians, American indian tribespeoples....)
Aside from that, I've seen the RETURN OF JESUS as a spaceship, being described by Saint John the Divine, a man who couldn't begin to think of a massive starship traveling through space (or the concept of "Space, the Final Frontier").
It could be a look at my own hopes, though. A way to solve a lot of the problems plaguing our beloved Earth would be to visit Mars and the Moon--mine it for resources and all.
Honestly, from a secular perspective, we only have 5 billion years left; as for the religious perspective I'm familiar with: "No man knoweth the day or the hour...." (Unless you were once a subject of the Mayan empire, then it's sometime in the year 2012. ;) j/k)
Live a great and honest life, live peaceably with all men, leave other men to their own devices, and die happy--doing what you love.
(If I have to indicate, here in Adult Land, that I use "men" in the "mankind/humanity/human race" sense, then we've lost the culture wars in a truly fundamental sense (as opposed to the right-wing "fundamentalists" making the news and LGF circuit trying to out Team Rocket the left-wing "fundamentalists" who want us to worship Gaia, the Spirit of Earth (a Greek myth and a cartoon chara concocted by Ted Turner).)

I don't want to die of a debilitating disease in old age, but if that's how it ends up, I'd like to be writing, drawing or otherwise working on my latest animated TV series. In old age, preferably 100+ years or so. (My oldest great-grand aunt (my great-grandmother's sister) left her mortal coil at around ninety-five years.)

I'm happy and thrilled for anyone who believes in heaven. The comfort it can give people who believe in it as not only a goal to aim for as well as a place where they can see loved ones again is a nice thing.
Like I stated in a previous comment a few days ago, I don't believe in heaven because I know that it's highly likely (I won't say certain because I can't prove it) that once you're brain is no longer functioning, you're conciousness ceases to exist. Most folks fear death not only from our instinctive maintenance of self-preservation but also from what they think it likely is. A state where you're ability to think is largely preserved but your senses can detect nothing. Since we experience a death "dress rehearsal" every night when we sleep without dreaming, the concept of death for me is very easy to comprehend. Just as easy to comprehend as my conciousness before being conceived. Nonexistent.

At my grandad's 90 birthday party (he passed at 97 in 2000), he ended up talking to me about death and heaven which was a little uncomfortable for me because he never talked about it with anyone. He said in his definition of heaven, he would be was sitting a long table, with all the great thinkers, philosophers and sages of all time and discussing politics, religion, ideas, all the things he and my dad, my uncles, my cousins did at every family gathering. I thought it was pretty cool.
He also said that hell was here with my grandmother. And we laughed!

Twain sez.....
The inventor of their heaven empties into it all the nations of the earth, in one common jumble. All are on an equality absolute, no one of them ranking another; they have to be "brothers"; they have to mix together, pray together, harp together, hosannah together--whites, n*****s, Jews, everybody--there's no distinction. Here in the earth all nations hate each other, and every one of them hates the Jew. Yet every pious person adores that heaven and wants to get into it. He really does. And when he is in a holy rapture he thinks he thinks that if he were only there he would take all the populace to his heart, and hug, and hug, and hug!

re: #96 IslandLibertarian
It's in Revelations and Daniel........cubits etc.........
Ah, I see. Revelations, Chapter 21, verses 16 and 17:
16 And the city lieth foursquare, and the length is as large as the breadth: and he measured the city with the reed, twelve thousand furlongs. The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal.
17 And he measured the wall thereof, an hundred and forty and four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of the angel.
If you figure a furlong is an eighth of a mile, and a cubit is maybe 444.5 mm, then what you have is a heaven that's 1500 miles square, for a total area of 2.25 million square miles. That's bigger than India, but smaller than Australia. And the walls are about 210 feet high.
155 | american sabra Sat, May 16, 2009 9:11:12pm |
When I was a little girl, I thought that heaven was like the top of my parents' closet. It was so neat and tidy up there. Mom would put my dad's dress shirts there. In those days, they'd come back from the cleaners in boxes and she stack the boxes neatly on the top shelf. And that's what I thought heaven was. You got stacked neatly, all crisp and pressed in a box on a shelf with your name on the front. If God needed you for anything, he'd just find your box.
And for some ill-conceived reason, this was comforting to me! lol

Nevertheless, the derision that some of these people have for what most people consider to be an honorable man (especially when compared to many other politicians - it is a sliding scale...), who will serve his fellow Americans representing the nation in the court of a foreign land, one of the more important ones in fact, is striking.

No problem, if you have no wants or needs in heaven, and everyone is equal, you don't need a body, no need to work, eat or the rest. Plenty of room for happy entities without physical bodies. I stand corrected if the Bible says your body makes the trip.

Revelation 7:2-4 and Revelation 14:1-5 make it quite clear that there will only be 144,000 people who will make it to Heaven.
I've been wondering about that. Chapter 14 seems to say that the 144,000 who are going have already gone.

He describes the conditions or preconditions for the coming of One, Like unto the Son of Man...
Those preconditions, the return of the Jews to the Holy Land, the spread of the Holy Gospel to every nation, and the 2,300-year Abomination of Desolation, all came to conclusion in the Year of the Great Expectation, 1844...
Afterwards called "The Year of the Great Disappointment" by clergy...

re: #182 albusteve
there may be drama...there was no time before you were born
I was not an organism before conception. By that biological process I became human with a biology that gave me consciousness. Luckily I was born healthy which gave me a rather decent mental capacity or state. My existence requires that healthy state which is dependent in all aspects of the human body: neurology, cardiology, etc. Once the organism dies the consciousness ends since it is dependent on a "living state."
Now, I don't argue against people that believe otherwise. That's how I see things in my own world. Some will agree with me while others won't and that's acceptable. In no case do I ever promote my own personal beliefs on this matter since I will readily admit that it is a cold, or as they say, materialist view and one that I've held since I was about 8 years old.

While I am very hesitant to get into such topics here on LGF, this is sort of a challenge, and this is my reply (intended with much kindness, and believe me, I have no interest in "bible thumping" you, avanti):
It's unfortunate no one was able to help him understand the basics of Christianity - primarily, we are all sinners and in need of a Savior. If we accept that Savior, He pays the penalty for our sin - no matter how vile, or how unforgivable our sin. God sacrificed His Son so that this would be possible for all of us.
There is nothing more merciful than that.

No Time Machine? I am paranoid about backups, copying files between 3 functioning machines and 3 external drives every day. Maybe because I've been using computers for almost 40 years, and I don't trust them.
FWIW, they replaced the system board on my MacBook Pro about a month ago, and that meant I had to blow away the previous Time Machine volume and start over. Time Machine uses the ethernet MAC address. No big deal, unless I needed to restore from it. They said I would be able to restore, but fortunately I didn't need to. I hope they're right; I'd hate to lose a machine and NOT be able to restore the backup!

Comments from the True Conservatives over at the AceOfSpades thread on Huntsman:

And so forth. There are other, longer and more reasonable posts over on Ace than there are, for example, on HotAir or Malkin's site.
Nevertheless, the derision that some of these people have for what most people consider to be an honorable man (especially when compared to many other politicians - it is a sliding scale...), who will serve his fellow Americans representing the nation in the court of a foreign land, one of the more important ones in fact, is striking.
The anti-social nature of the internet is being manifest clearly among the right-wing blog meltdowns these days.

I get that, but don't get the concept of a vengeful supreme being. For example, I could accept the rape victim not setting with God, because she did not accept him, but even that is a little weird. To send the rape victim to eternal torment, seems a bit petty to put a human emotion on it, especially for a supreme being.
I could go on to describe why I don't get the whole sacrifice thing either, but we're getting into some very sensitive territory.

What God did in Genesis was to place Adam and Eve in front of two trees; Life, representing God, and knowledge representing everything else.
God gave them the choice. We all have a choice, if God gave Adam and Eve the choice, we as Christians should respect the choices people make.
The gospel is not a fire insurance gospel, repent or burn in hell unlike many evangelicals miss-apprehend.
Christians should not push, lay guilt trips. badger or coerce. If what we have faith in is true, our sharing is not in vain. But we have to live the life first, and not offended in our gospel.
Thank him for his concern, ask him to respect your choice as God respected Adam and Eve's.

From Ayn Rand the ultimate refutation of Original Sin:
Your code begins by damning man as evil, then demands that he practice a good which it defines as impossible for him to practice. It demands, as his first proof of virtue, that he accept his own depravity without proof. It demands that he start, not with a standard of value, but with a standard of evil, which is himself, by means of which he is then to define the good: the good is that which he is not.
It does not matter who then becomes the profiteer on his renounced glory and tormented soul, a mystic God with some incomprehensible design or any passer-by whose rotting sores are held as some inexplicable claim upon him—it does not matter, the good is not for him to understand, his duty is to crawl through years of penance, atoning for the guilt of his existence to any stray collector of unintelligible debts, his only concept of a value is a zero: the good is that which is non-man.
The name of this monstrous absurdity is Original Sin.
A sin without volition is a slap at morality and an insolent contradiction in terms: that which is outside the possibility of choice is outside the province of morality. If man is evil by birth, he has no will, no power to change it; if he has no will, he can be neither good nor evil; a robot is amoral. To hold, as man’s sin, a fact not open to his choice is a mockery of morality. To hold man’s nature as his sin is a mockery of nature. To punish him for a crime he committed before he was born is a mockery of justice. To hold him guilty in a matter where no innocence exists is a mockery of reason. To destroy morality, nature, justice and reason by means of a single concept is a feat of evil hardly to be matched. Yet that is the root of your code.
Do not hide behind the cowardly evasion that man is born with free will, but with a “tendency” to evil. A free will saddled with a tendency is like a game with loaded dice. It forces man to struggle through the effort of playing, to bear responsibility and pay for the game, but the decision is weighted in favor of a tendency that he had no power to escape. If the tendency is of his choice, he cannot possess it at birth; if it is not of his choice, his will is not free.
What is the nature of the guilt that your teachers call his Original Sin? What are the evils man acquired when he fell from a state they consider perfection? Their myth declares that he ate the fruit of the tree of knowledge—he acquired a mind and became a rational being. It was the knowledge of good and evil—he became a moral being. He was sentenced to earn his bread by his labor—he became a productive being. He was sentenced to experience desire—he acquired the capacity of sexual enjoyment. The evils for which they damn him are reason, morality, creativeness, joy—all the cardinal values of his existence. It is not his vices that their myth of man’s fall is designed to explain and condemn, it is not his errors that they hold as his guilt, but the essence of his nature as man. Whatever he was—that robot in the Garden of Eden, who existed without mind, without values, without labor, without love —he was not man.
Man’s fall, according to your teachers, was that he gained the virtues required to live. These virtues, by their standard, are his Sin. His evil, they charge, is that he’s man. His guilt, they charge, is that he lives.
They call it a morality of mercy and a doctrine of love for man.

Thanks for the TED video! Very cool stuff.
As for the "Heaven" video? Love how the guy figures out the size of Heaven. Hey..."it's big" woulda worked for the faithful, but I think he was trying to convince the slightly more rational of his flock that he had some special knowledge? Sounded more like Ross Perot with a pie chart.

You're welcome! It is cool and I sort of surfed into that video this morning. "We rationalize the vastness of space and then rationalize the rationalizing."
Here's the UCSD page for V.S. Ramachandran.
Some of his Reith Lectures from 2003.
The history of mankind in the last three hundred years has been punctuated by major upheavals in human thought that we call scientific revolutions - upheavals that have profoundly affected the way in which we view ourselves and our place in the cosmos. First there was the Copernican revolution - the notion that far from being the centre of the universe, our planet is a mere speck of dust revolving around the sun. Then there was the Darwinian revolution culminating in the view that we are not angels but merely hairless apes, as Huxley once pointed out in this very room. And third there was Freud's discovery of the "unconscious" - the idea that even though we claim to be in charge of our destinies, most of our behaviour is governed by a cauldron of motives and emotions which we are barely conscious of. Your conscious life, in short, is nothing but an elaborate post-hoc rationalisation of things you really do for other reasons.

My faith is complex, and people are complex, and only God knows what is in each person's heart. For me to judge other people and assume they are going to hell based on my own imperfect human senses is just nonsense. Judge not, in other words. Unfortunately, I am not sure I could explain that to the young fellow without hurting him or making him angry.

So when Jesus chose words to explain His 'return', and His 3 promises can be seen to point directly to the year 1844, you imply that He was ignorant of the meaning of His words? Or He didn't KNOW they would lead to the ONLY person Who came that year claiming divinity?
Or maybe you just suggest that Jesus is RIGHT, but we misunderstand His guidance, even when it is fulfilled?
Ah, well, IIPeter2:1 is pertinent, and ustimately we're both correct: for you, Christ has NOT returned. He HAS returned for me.
B'ahai says: 5/23/1844.
Christian says: Read the NT.
Jew says: We know what to look for, and you're both wrong.
Intolerant Muslim says: You will all die for your unbelief.
Buddhist says: Why are you all worrying about God to begin with? It won't bring you peace or enlightenment to speculate on such things. First, remove the poison arrow, then worry about who shot you--that's what I say.
Hindu says: Ahem! Forget that Gautama clown and his meanderings. We have the real deal: Reincarnation until nirvana, baby. Where do you think the Buddhists got it?
Shintoist says: The gods inhabit everything!
Atheist says: There is no god. There is only the material reality that exists. That's it. All of your philosophies are just made up crap as far as I can tell, and I ask you to please leave me out of it.
Agnostic looks at all of them and says: I don't know. I cannot speculate on the unknown with the evidence we have available. (cont'd)

CONT'D FROM: re: #315 anubis_soundwave
While what we do have points to the atheist's position, I have to consider the messenger and the issue. Atheism as a philosophy has been around for all of three hundred years, tops--though I admit that longevity is no indicator of truth.
What's keeping me out of the Atheist column is this: either every culture in history has concocted fanciful lies for some odd reason lost to antiquity, or all of those cultures saw "something" and--interpreted through each culture's lens--called it "god".
Most individuals chalk it up to faith and leave it at that, but the atheist and me: we want empirical evidence. Look, according to the New Testament, when Jesus came back from the dead (and this depends on four eyewitness accounts--one from a doctor who wasn't even there at the time of the death/burial/resurrection), Thomas--one of the twelve disciples--wanted proof. Now to the christian, I ask you: What Would Jesus Do--or in this case, What Did Jesus Do?
Did he discount Thomas? Did he rebuke, punish, or curse Thomas? Did he reject Thomas? Did he issue a fatwa on Thomas demanding that he be burned at the stake? (Yes, I know: I'm conflating christian intolerance with muslim intolerance.)
To answer all of these: no. According to the New Testament that you recommended, christian, Jesus simply...showed Thomas the evidence he was asking for.
Before you scoff, atheist, there's something you must consider.
One of the following occured:
A. some actor 2,000 years ago followed the Stanislavsky method; he willingly punched 1-inch nails into his hands (wrists) and impaled himself on a spear--after being flogged by the Praetorian guard to within an inch of his life
B. the early christian church around 70 CE was composed of a bunch of liars
C. someone in ancient Jerusalem survived a crucifixion and identified himself as Jesus
D. Jesus was in fact resurrected
A is irrational, B is one of several atheist conclusions, and C is completely impossible barring a miracle. Based on the facts, B and D are plausible and rational conclusions based on one's philosophical outlook on life.
I know you guys hate it when I get so long winded. I'm not sorry. I've actually read your books, studied your philosophies and writings--along with a whole bunch more. I've given this more thought than any of you can imagine.
Why? Why won't I take pat answers from any of you?
I want the truth.

It's really not your problem - he has a problem with judging others that is part and parcel or his simple faith (I don't mean to belittle him, but a slam dunk heaven key is an extremely simple view). Hey irongrampa - I've asked this question of a protestant minister (Lutheran) a Roman Catholic Priest and a Rabbi (Reform I think): if as the bible tells us, God is omniscient, omnipotent and benevolent, then why does he allow War and famine and illiteracy?
Interestingly enough, I got pretty much the SAME ANSWER from each of them: God works in mysterious and Wondrous Ways.
I was much younger then and was TERRIBLY displeased with this answer.
Fast forward thirty some odd years and in Vietnam I saw things that I could not explain - some great things and some truly gruesome things. I spoke to a Chaplin (a Roman Catholic Priest) and described in very graphic detail some of those things that I had seen (and done) and asked him the same question and his answer was:"God works in Mysterious and Wondrous ways."
At that time that did make sense to me, because I could think of no other answer which would fit with all that I had learned to that date.
While I truly detest the "competitive nature" of all religions ("choose us or you'll go to hell" type of stuff) I think it's true that there are some things that man alone cannot or at least has not explained and perhaps there lies the hand of God.

Ramachandran was featured in a recent New Yorker profile. He has, among other things, developed a technique using an ordinary mirror that relieves "phantom limb" pain in a majority of patients.
No one has ever come up with a reliable treatment for that before. He does it with a mirror and simple tromp l'oeil.
He's a genius.
And without hitting the "alarm" button on his key fob, he can't find his car in a parking lot!
I highly recommend the article.
The mirror technique which he mentions in the video and is part of his lectures. All for only 3 dollars as he say. Great sense of humor too.
This is the New Yorker article that mentions the mirror "trick."

You'd love this article!
He also can't remember his wife's birthday after 22 years of marriage. He knows it's in August, because his is, too.
During the interview on this subject, their kid pipes up and asks does he know his birthday.
R. looks at him helplessly, then says, "It doesn't mean I don't love you."
He's the original absent-minded professor. Oliver Sacks is one of his best buddies. And you should hear some of his theorizing on the origins of metaphor.
Apparently creativity comes in part from analogizing things that aren't related at all. He's working on synesthetics - people who "hear" colors or "see" sounds - as a model for how it works.
In other words, the misfires in our brains may be largely responsible for any new stuff that emerges.

She was just a bit over dramatic there. Original sin is the gap between being human and being totally unselfish.
I don't understand the connection you are trying to make. Original Sin makes a mockery of morality and free will and necessarily views man as innately depraved. The antipode of Original Sin is not being totally unselfish. Men are not ghosts; they have material needs they must satisfy in order to live. This is rational selfishness. Neither sacrificing yourself to others or sacrificing others to yourself.

I think Ovechkin is the player the NHL wants Crosby to be at this point. The league and Canadians seem reluctant to embrace European players, tho'. Crosby can be impressive at times (hat-trick in a losing effort during that series against Washington) but Russian linemate Evgeni Malkin is almost as impressive with a fraction of the hype.
Capitals/Penguins could be the Celtics/Cavs or Lakers/Spurs of the NHL for the next few years.

466 | herbieham Sun, May 17, 2009 2:43:36am |
Well - the man presented the stuff in a funny and campy way I suppose.
But - all he did was tell it as the Bible tells it.
(not that 95% of posters here would have ever read the relevant words)
I can understand all the stuff against creationism being taught in schools in LGF -thats fair and probably proper -but it some how seems strange that here we have a sight where Islam is seen as a threat, that radicalism is seen as a threat, yet just the fundamentals of the bible, of Christian faith seem to need to be mocked and derided as well. I'm sure our Islamic enemies are pleased as punch.
Attack the Christan faith as much as you like -I won't go out of my tree -but gee -read it to see what it says before you think you can mock it with any authority.
For the poster who is worried about his parents going to hell?
Jesus -in the Bible -is quite clear.
Accept Christs salvation - or go to the other place.
Christianity actually is very, very simple - accept what Jesus did on the cross for you - or don't
There is nothing deeper really than that -but then, when you contemplate the Grace offered by God - then there is no bottom to how deep you could go.
Its been a fun thread to read !

Ohh.... foo.
Pirkle is doing nothing but creating fantasies out of his own mind. His depiction of "heaven" is ludicrous.
If you think it has anything to do with reality, then you need help.
If you think this presentation of "heaven" is Biblical then you need to go back and study more.
/You'd likely be shocked at how much some of lizards have studied the Bible.
Pirkle's come-to-Jesus ending is standard for Baptist-type sermons. Pirkle could have made a movie about anything yet his preaching style would still call for a come-to-Jesus ending.

Gotta love it. There are actually some people who think that posting this video "proves" I must be an atheist.
Believe it or not, when I posted this it didn't even occur to me that anyone could possibly be offended, or take it personally. It's exactly what I wrote above -- an oddity. How can someone look at this video and think, "Charles is making fun of ME!?"
And we even have at least one person who says we're doomed to hell, and the video was just showing the truth.
Good grief.

I went to church with a Baptist family around the same era, 1969 or so, and the whole service was guilting people into marching up front to cry and confess and declare they wanted to get rid of their "black hearts" or whatever and accept Jesus. My 8-year old friend would whisper to me about hell. Fire roasting your skin for eternity, no water, etc....The air of emotional coercion and fear was intense- it was surreal, not unlike these Fellini-esque bits here.
Totally freaked me out and I came home really alarmed for everyone's souls up until the point my Mom looked at me with a raised an eyebrow and I instantly "got" that it was all bullshit. Whew!

Not at all. I think what bothered me was the exploitation of the small woman, as well as the exploitation of her faith.

I believe it didn’t occur to you that this video could possibly offend anyone. It’s just this blind-spot of yours that concerns those of us who love what you’re doing and have done here at LGF in warning the world about the dangers of Islam, etc.; those of us who also happen to be fundamentalist Christians. We are sensitive to the (I’m sorry) anti-Biblical bigotry behind your decision to post this video because it is our creed that is being presented in such a technically crude and hokey manor that it couldn’t fail to elicit derision and mockery in a modern, mostly unsympathetic audience. I doubt you would post an embarrassing, dated film that held Hasidic Jews and their beliefs up to similar ridicule; no matter how much of an “oddity” you found it.
Sometimes saying, “Lighten up, it’s just a joke,” really does betray the joker’s prejudice.

re: #368 realwest
Hey irongrampa - I've asked this question of a protestant minister (Lutheran) a Roman Catholic Priest and a Rabbi (Reform I think): if as the bible tells us, God is omniscient, omnipotent and benevolent, then why does he allow War and famine and illiteracy?
Interestingly enough, I got pretty much the SAME ANSWER from each of them: God works in mysterious and Wondrous Ways.
Apparently these priests and rabbis either flunked their theology classes or had bad teachers.
God is omniscient, omnipresent and all-powerful. God's power is limited by Himself—He will not do anything bad or absurd. He created the world (if you are willing to accept the Bible's account at least as symbolic of what happened) without death or sickness or pain or suffering or storms or earthquakes or any other bad or wicked thing. God created the angels and man with the power to love and be good or not. He did this so that we could love and help, not as automatons blindly obeying some instinct or fate, but as true individuals who are freely able to choose our destiny. He wanted us all to be able to love freely by our own choice, not because someone was pushing our buttons. Lucifer, or Satan, chose a way that was less than good—he was the first to discover evil, the absence of good. God never created evil. Evil is a non-thing. Just as darkness is the absence of light, so evil is the absence of good. Satan tricked the first humans into choosing evil or sin. These humans allowed this chaotic force to enter our world and upset the balance of things. We instinctively are repulsed by sickness and death because they are in fact unnatural. For this season, God does sometimes direct the corrosive nature of evil to accomplish His good will. God does not end evil because the only way to end it is to crush the will of all beings with free will—suddenly we would be no more able to love or do good than a blade of grass. There will be a day when God removes from us the absence of life, death, and separates those who favor the treacherous enthralling pleasures of evil from those who choose true love and goodness. Those who choose evil are choosing to endure a hell of their own making—continually desiring that which sickens, kills, diminishes and destroys them without being able to die. Those who choose love and goodness will continually be reinforcing the life given them by God until they themselves are almost gods themselves—the caveat is that they must continue to be good and loving to have such power.

Like enduring an uncle who insists on wearing a lemon-orange plaid leisure suit, so we Christians endure the eccentrics among us. And just as some family members would say we are disloyal and betraying the family by shunning the uncle, there are Christians who think that critiquing another Christian is some sort of betrayal or apostasy.
Funny video Charles.
I was listening to my car radio in Kentucky when some radio evangelist began talking about how Paul the Apostle (circa 70 A.D.) wrote the Bible in King James English (1611 A.D.). I laughed so hard I nearly wrecked my car.

Oh, Charles, please--you know I only used Hasidic Jews as an example because your deep respect for Jews & Judaism stands in contradistinction to the unconscious lack of respect for Christians & Biblical Christianity that I think your choice of this video displays. You know, from my few posts & recent email that I am the farthest thing from an anti-Semite. My God is the God of Abraham, Isaac & Jacob; My Messiah is the Messiah of the Tanak; My reverence for Judaism & the Jewish people knows no bounds. I am a Gentile believer in Yeshua HaMashiac. Your comment seems a churlish attempt at deflecting my heartfelt criticism--a criticism I did not relesh making, btw; in fact, I'm deeply saddened by the conclusion I was led to.
I'm sorry if I was disrepectful.

As a very conservative Christian, I don't think Charles disrespects Christianity at all. He and I would differ on its place in the body politic, neither of us can stand false science as faith promotion in the schools or anywhere, or ill informed jackasses like Estus Prickle. That man was making things (s%*t) up. Heaven forbid that is the afterlife I am working for.

Glad you're bearing up under my onslaught, but you're still misreading my comments. I'm not saddened by your posting the video; I'm saddened by the conclusion that you're blind to the animus you have to Fundamentalist Christians which allowed you to post this video and be oblivious to the possibility that you’d be holding them up to ridicule and scorn. As you said:
…when I posted this [video] it didn’t occur to me that anyone could possibly be offended, or take it personally.
I took you at your word, but it seemed very naïve for that not to occur to you. You are not a naïve person, so it seems inescapable that you are atypically insensitive to feelings of this group of people. It is usually a very strong dislike of a particular group that makes an otherwise reasonably empathetic person so insensitive to the feelings of the members of that group.
If I’m wrong, I’m wrong. But I think it was a fair comment.
But, again, if I was disrespectful to you (as your implication that I am an anti-Semite suggests), then I apologize to you unreservedly.

Unsure whether you mean you are a conservative who is a Christian or your Christianity is conservative, but either way I find it hard to reconcile your avowed belief in Jesus with your comment that Mr Prickle is an ill-informed jackass. His exegesis might be in question, and his mathematics weak, but his presentation of the New Jerusalem & Heaven is earnestly given and entirely consistent with many orthodox views of his day. Posting this video could not help but evoke derision for the subject of the video (Christ's view of Heaven), the beliefs of the filmmakers (Christianity) and for the participants themselves (fellow Christians). Where do you find in the Word that mockery and scorn equate to anything other than "disrespect" (not to mention hate)?

I've been watching this, and I just have to say that I think it's you prejudice that has made you view this thread as insulting. You want to be offended. Our host has already said it wasn't his intent, but you're insisting that it was, as though you're a mind reader. I doubt that. Anyways- you're basically calling your host a liar. You’re ascribing a motivation to me that does not exist; I'm not offended, I don't see this thread as insulting.
As well, I did not call Charles a liar or disagree with him (except when he implied I was an anti-Semite). In fact, I said twice that I believed Charles when he said it did not occur to him that anyone would be offended by this video. My point was simply that, to me, it was telling that it never occurred to him because it seems so obvious that it would insult people who believed in the same things represented so poorly in the film. (btw, Charles has not replied to this point at all, but has preferred instead to denigrate me, uhm, for having feelings or something, I guess.)
Also, I twice apologised to “our host” if my comments were disrespectful. I cannot see where they are, but judging from Charles’ ad hominem response, I thought it prudent to apologize in order to allay any misgivings he had as to my motives for commenting.
However, now that you too have cast another unfounded accusation of prejudice at me, I can see that my intentions have indeed been misconstrued. I genuinely regard that as a pity.
So, finally, and again for the record: I am not personally offended by this video. I do not think this thread is insulting. I do not think Charles lied. I do think his dislike for Fundamentalist Christians makes him insensitive to their feelings in a way that is most atypical for him.
I’m not a mind-reader; and neither are you and Charles.
Shalom in Y’shua.

Not new, but I admit to having no idea what you're referring to...perhaps you could explain? Of course, if it was just a random remark to indicate to everyone that you're "on side" and against the ignorant troll who appears to be arguing with Charles, don't bother, Tony; more ill-considered tangents we don't need & Sharmuta's way ahead of you....

Let me make it clear. There is ~nothing~ in either video clip that could offend a sane individual, and I mean that with all sincerity. The blind-spot is your own if you can see the absurdity that is Beaker, yet not see the absurdity that is Estus Pirkle. Both talk gobble-dee-gook in a fashion that in both highly bizarre and decidedly entertaining. The surreal 70s production quality, the stern looks, the garmets, and the gobble-dee-gook as sold by a creepy Estus Pirkle makes the first video highly entertaining. Beaker singing a very passionate and heartfelt ballad in the only way Beaker can, makes the second video highly entertaining.
They're both nuts.
Tony.

re: #511 Fierce Guppy
I do see the absurdity of both videos--they are both funny. But, again, read what I wrote, I never said the video was offensive per se. What was obviously going to be offensive, I contend, was the derisive comments about, and ridicule of, the beliefs espoused in the film that would inevitably follow. It is safe to say that Charles, you and the majority of the lizards are of the opinion that belief in the Bible (in fact, all spiritual belief) is insane, so you see nothing wrong with mocking that belief, but surely you don't think fundamentalist Christians share your opinion of their mental health? There is no doubt that some would find the mocking of their deeply held beliefs offensive. And, again, it's selective ridicule; there is no way that Charles would hold the beliefs of Jewish fundamentalists up to the same ridicule, even though he clearly holds those beliefs in the same contempt as the Christians'. In my opinion, that bespeaks a blind-spot at best; a hypocritical bias at worst.
513 | Fierce Guppy Wed, May 20, 2009 1:14:05am |
Perhaps you should discuss the matter with Charles or one of the many Christians on LFG. I can only assume a person's motivations based on what they've said or have written in the past. Unfortunately, Charles has displayed extremely little contempt for the irrational pap that religious people misconstrue as "spiritual". He nibbles around the edges, and this is exactly what I'd expect from any individual who ranks religious faith as having the same epistemological status as rational enquiry.
Que sera sera.
He's no Christopher Hitchens or James Randi, so don't be too concerned. The day you see me dancing in the streets is the day you should be concerned.
Tony.
