Basically this community education organization from that part of town recruits through our school for us to go down there to teach the kids language arts, Math, and art while they're not in school.

Apart from being a graduation requirement, it's also the law that college kids like me have to volunteer for a certain amount of time (or volunteer for the ROTC, which my college does not offer.)

So I have an old email address which I don't use much anymore. It's turned into a bit of a spam collector. One of the people that still uses it is a extreme righty who I gather is a wannabe teabagger. Part of his public service is to keep me informed of the 'real truth' of pretty much everything in order to correct my evil liberal tendencies so I get lots of spam. Hey did you know Obama isn't an American and muslim? Who knew? ///
Anyways I just checked the email and there's a whole lotta links to climategate stuff with most from Alex Jones et al. Ummm...sure.

Usually I just ignore them but I couldn't help myself. I just sent an email back freaking out about how great Alex Jones is and how I'm so glad he's finally found this awesome source of information and that maybe we do have some common political ground after all because hey...this Jones guy is so hip on the truth. Then I proceeded to list a whole bunch of 9/11 Truther links from his sites.

Was that mean? And what the heck is up with this weird conspiracy leftie/rightie convergence that seems to be going on in some quarters? It's bizzare and freaking me out a little.

Just finished updinging the hatchlings and glancing over today's threads. Was away from the computer today, as I almost jinxed myself on the previous overnight thread re: a potential new job, and didn't want any more problems with my tired brain saying dumb stuff. So I stayed from LGF and was rewarded with another phone call for an interview next week! Seeing that only 4 firms have interviewed me since I was laid off on Hitler's Birthday (April 20), having 2 in 1 day call me in to talk is quite a high point. Perhaps the economy is really turning around at last...

As a backup plan, in order to get not only on Sportscenter, but on all cable and network channels, I have an idea.

All it would take is a bllue, a green marker, and 2x4 cardboard folded in half.

In the event that by halftime, you have not been able to attract camera coverage, you only have to write Johnny Unitas with an X on one side and Joe "Willie" Namath on the other.
We might just see a lot of face paint around the forty-yard line seats on TV, but at least we would know it was you on the bottom of the pile.

I was at the Orange Bowl for the '69 game.
Unitas was hurt early in the season, was way past his prime, and Shula decided to go with Earl Morrell, heck the Colts felt it was a given.
Hum, Namath was unstopable, he had done a Baby Ruth and guaranteed a win.
When Shula realized the Colts, under Morell were not performing, he brought in Unitas and they dueled on and off for a quarter or so, you could see and feel the adrenaline flowing when Unitas was in the game, he did himself proud.
In the end though, it was Namath, he ruled.
Joe Namath had beaten the mighty Colts and the Jets deserved all of the glory.

I read Tom Friedman's column today, and though I usually find something to complain about in a Tom Friedman column, this one hit home. Because the scariest thing I have heard in my week and a half here in Israel was a comment by one Israeli that the current political climate in America reminded him of the climate in Israel in the months leading up to the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin.

I'm relived that the threats against him are no worse then what the previous Presidents have had to deal with.

I wouldn't be so quick out of the gate saying that the increased threat level last summer was an urban legend. It appears there was a bell curve (of sorts) with a rise in threats that has now dropped off. Again, read just how Sullivan phrases his statement before the committee. That was no accident.

I don't think there's anything crazy about those comparisons -- there is a serious threat to mankind from global warming. I know there are lots of people here who want to believe there's nothing to worry about, but it couldn't be more serious.

The comparison is valid because Hansen is talking about huge problems that required huge solutions.

It takes one person with a gun, and we have a history of presidential assassinations. Some people are really, really worked up about Obama, and they tend to be the sort who are also well armed. Most of the folks who really hated Bush probably never held a firearm in their lives.

Speaking of slavery, rumors are beginning to circulate about this story, a barn in Ohio that burned down killing two people and 65 race horses, alleging that ALF or some other animal rights group was behind it. Some of these groups consider pets, race horses and farm animals to be "slaves" and advocate violence against facilities that house them to be justified on these grounds, since death (according to them) is preferable to a life of servitude.

I can't find any actual news sources lending any credence to this interpretation; it seems too early to tell what the cause was.

Sadly, though, deliberate arson by animal rights groups is not something that can be dismissed just yet.

I would not be at all surprised to see that much of the threat aggregate was coming form offshore sources, initially. Al Qaeda would immediately have understood the image problem they potentially have wrt Obama, and threats (however asinine or impotent) would be a reaction I would expect.

Even without dishonest lobbies, the solution side of this makes the climate math look simple by comparison. Looks like this-Pick you number of climate factors to address. Angry rhetoric can only cloud all that and delay real action.

Speaking of slavery, rumors are beginning to circulate about this story, a barn in Ohio that burned down killing two people and 65 race horses, alleging that ALF or some other animal rights group was behind it. Some of these groups consider pets, race horses and farm animals to be "slaves" and advocate violence against facilities that house them to be justified on these grounds, since death (according to them) is preferable to a life of servitude.

I can't find any actual news sources lending any credence to this interpretation; it seems too early to tell what the cause was.

Damn. That is extremely screwed up. Some domestic terrorism sources have warned that escalation by ELF and other animal rights/Gaia/anarchist groups was inevitable, and that people would be killed.

I don't think there's anything crazy about those comparisons -- there is a serious threat to mankind from global warming. I know there are lots of people here who want to believe there's nothing to worry about, but it couldn't be more serious.

How true. I had questions about how much the solar cycle might influence global warming, but after reading the New Scientist link that Charles included in a previous thread, I am convinced that GW is AGW. The question still remains as to what, if anything, we can do. It may be the case that our efforts would be better spent in preparing for the inevitable rather than trying to stave off the inevitable. On the other hand, we must also take into consideration the huge benefit limiting carbon emissions would have for reducing pollution and general waste of nonrenewable energy resources.
Cap and trade is just another scam initiated by crooks who brought us the messes called Enron, sub prime mortgages and so on. See another previous thread.

It takes one person with a gun, and we have a history of presidential assassinations. Some people are really, really worked up about Obama, and they tend to be the sort who are also well armed. Most of the folks who really hated Bush probably never held a firearm in their lives.

Yes, true. People do claim that the only message being sent there was "you'll never pry my gun away from me" but I think it would be a little too dreamy to say there wasn't a second, darker message being sent. I'm seeing a lot of unreasonable panic and fear of this President, and coupled with the bad economy, well, that makes me afraid!
