Tide died? D: Now what am I gonna use to clean my clothes?
Ketchup. It won't actually clean your clothes, per se, but you'll lose your job, your family will disown you, and your friends will abandon you.
At that point, you will no longer care about whether or not your clothes are clean, and you will have more time to post here. During the business hours of local library, of course.
Note: It must be ketchup, and not catsup. There is a difference.

Basically this community education organization from that part of town recruits through our school for us to go down there to teach the kids language arts, Math, and art while they're not in school.
Apart from being a graduation requirement, it's also the law that college kids like me have to volunteer for a certain amount of time (or volunteer for the ROTC, which my college does not offer.)

So I have an old email address which I don't use much anymore. It's turned into a bit of a spam collector. One of the people that still uses it is a extreme righty who I gather is a wannabe teabagger. Part of his public service is to keep me informed of the 'real truth' of pretty much everything in order to correct my evil liberal tendencies so I get lots of spam. Hey did you know Obama isn't an American and muslim? Who knew? ///
Anyways I just checked the email and there's a whole lotta links to climategate stuff with most from Alex Jones et al. Ummm...sure.
Usually I just ignore them but I couldn't help myself. I just sent an email back freaking out about how great Alex Jones is and how I'm so glad he's finally found this awesome source of information and that maybe we do have some common political ground after all because hey...this Jones guy is so hip on the truth. Then I proceeded to list a whole bunch of 9/11 Truther links from his sites.
Was that mean? And what the heck is up with this weird conspiracy leftie/rightie convergence that seems to be going on in some quarters? It's bizzare and freaking me out a little.

Morning Lizards!
Just finished updinging the hatchlings and glancing over today's threads. Was away from the computer today, as I almost jinxed myself on the previous overnight thread re: a potential new job, and didn't want any more problems with my tired brain saying dumb stuff. So I stayed from LGF and was rewarded with another phone call for an interview next week! Seeing that only 4 firms have interviewed me since I was laid off on Hitler's Birthday (April 20), having 2 in 1 day call me in to talk is quite a high point. Perhaps the economy is really turning around at last...

Is this the nightmare thread?
Glenn Beck the movie
Glenn Beck's new movie The Christmas Sweater – A Return To Redemption -- released for a viewing Thursday night in hundreds of theaters across the country. While it performed better in the south and in rural, more conservative areas, his ability to draw viewers in major US markets was a bust.
"It is the story of faith, tragedy, redemption and hope," Beck says in the trailer.
Wow, just wow. Is this funny? Should I be laughing hysterically or crying?

It'll be okay, just take a deep breath. This happened during the Clinton admin. as well, with right wing pundits parroting some of AJ's conspiracy mongering. This is just an episode or really stupid history repeating itself.
And just for the record, AJ is neither left nor right, but dead center insane. He spews madness at whatever party is in power.

re: #28 Jadespring
There is a video link out there somewhere, where he (Jones) rails against the Clinton admin at his local DMV, refusing to submit to a thumbprint scan to renew his driver's license, decrying the procedure as "The Mark of The Beast".
I listened to a fair amount of right-wing talk radio at that time, and much of their "reporting" of Clinton's evil-doing as governor of Arkansas was sourced from Jones' conspiracy mongering.

As a backup plan, in order to get not only on Sportscenter, but on all cable and network channels, I have an idea.
All it would take is a bllue, a green marker, and 2x4 cardboard folded in half.
In the event that by halftime, you have not been able to attract camera coverage, you only have to write Johnny Unitas with an X on one side and Joe "Willie" Namath on the other.
We might just see a lot of face paint around the forty-yard line seats on TV, but at least we would know it was you on the bottom of the pile.
I was at the Orange Bowl for the '69 game.
Unitas was hurt early in the season, was way past his prime, and Shula decided to go with Earl Morrell, heck the Colts felt it was a given.
Hum, Namath was unstopable, he had done a Baby Ruth and guaranteed a win.
When Shula realized the Colts, under Morell were not performing, he brought in Unitas and they dueled on and off for a quarter or so, you could see and feel the adrenaline flowing when Unitas was in the game, he did himself proud.
In the end though, it was Namath, he ruled.
Joe Namath had beaten the mighty Colts and the Jets deserved all of the glory.
Good luck on Sunday.

I'm obviously J/K. My spouse works for a company that has a very nice suite and we usually go to a couple games a year. She's also managed to score me 1/2 a dozen different concert tix too. I've never really asked why her VP keeps giving her such good tix, but since she manged to get me Breaking Benjamin/Sick Puppies tix last week I don't care why.
I used to play with the drummer from BB when we were younger. He deserves it - the guy's done nothing but play drums since he could walk. (we were neighbors)

Staying a couple of years in Singapore? Neat place to visit, no way I'd want to stay for an extended period but that's just me. I was there in the early 90's as part of a military exercise.
I'll bet it looks nothing like it did 15 years ago.

The pebble that stood alone

warm shallow waters sweep shells
so the cockles shine...A bare winding carcass, stark
shimmers as flies scoop up meat, an empty way...
dry tears...
crisp flax squeaks tall reeds
make a circle of gray in a summer way, around man
stood on ground...I'm trying
I'm trying to find you!
To find you

You may remember a rash of media reports in August and September about a claim that assassination threats directed at President Obama are up 400 percent over previous presidents, stretching the Secret Service to its limits
But Director of the Secret Service Mark Sullivan begged to differ at a Congressional hearing over the party crasher incident today:
"The threats are not up," Sullivan said, adding that they receive about the same amount of threats against Obama as they did for presidents Clinton and Bush.

I read Tom Friedman's column today, and though I usually find something to complain about in a Tom Friedman column, this one hit home. Because the scariest thing I have heard in my week and a half here in Israel was a comment by one Israeli that the current political climate in America reminded him of the climate in Israel in the months leading up to the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin.
%$#@. So depressing. There are plenty of valid criticisms of the president, but the extreme right in the United States is just so ugly and angry. Our extreme left is pretty ugly, too, I guess, but they're also unarmed. And as a secret service agent recently told a friend of mine, "People didn't like Bush, sure, but they really want to kill this guy."

You might want to see No. 179.
I am just giving you a perspective from one of the top counter insurgency bloggers in the world...who also thinks that there are parallels with what happened in Israel.
Figures?
Liars figure and figures lie. I do not know what the actual data looks like.
This quote was interesting, however.
"The threats right now ... is the same level as it has been for the previous two presidents at this point in their administrations," Sullivan said.
Interesting how he parsed that "right now...". It echos a news report last month that threats against the President were falling off since last summer.
According to one widely circulated elaboration on Kessler’s reporting published in August by London’s Daily Telegraph, this means that Obama has been facing 30 death threats each day. In March, Secret Service chief Mark Sullivan told a House Appropriations subcommittee that threats to individuals protected by the Secret Service “remain at high levels.”
Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan told NEWSWEEK that those figures are now out of date. According to Donovan, there were “substantial spikes” in the rate of threats the service received against Obama before and after last year’s presidential election, and then again before and after Obama’s inauguration last January. Over succeeding months, however, the rate of threats has dropped substantially, Donovan said—so substantially that while the average number of threats received is running at about the same level as it did during the presidencies of George W. Bush and Bill Clinton, on some recent days the rate of threats received against Obama has actually been lower than the rate during the reigns of Clinton and W.
[Link: blog.newsweek.com...]
I wouldn't be so quick out of the gate saying that the increased threat level last summer was an urban legend. It appears there was a bell curve (of sorts) with a rise in threats that has now dropped off. Again, read just how Sullivan phrases his statement before the committee. That was no accident.

James Hansen of NASA's Goddard Institute
"[Global warming] is analogous to the issue of slavery faced by Abraham Lincoln or the issue of Nazism faced by Winston Churchill ... On those kind of issues you cannot compromise. You can't say, let's reduce slavery, let's find a compromise and reduce it 50 percent or reduce it 40 percent."
Glad to see all of the over the top rhetoric isn't limited to the deniers. Plenty of CRAZY to spread around!
I don't think there's anything crazy about those comparisons -- there is a serious threat to mankind from global warming. I know there are lots of people here who want to believe there's nothing to worry about, but it couldn't be more serious.
The comparison is valid because Hansen is talking about huge problems that required huge solutions.

Huge solutions that people don't necessarily agree on, it seems. The most popular being more government control over industry regulation, but that doesn't seem to work due to industry lobbies.

Plus it remains a fact that there's been an explosion in recruitment for militia groups and white supremacist groups-- which is directly tied to Obama's campaign and election. The SPLC has documented this extensively. Moreover, Obama received Secret Service protection earlier than any other candidate, in May of 2007, because of the number of threats already coming in.

Speaking of slavery, rumors are beginning to circulate about this story, a barn in Ohio that burned down killing two people and 65 race horses, alleging that ALF or some other animal rights group was behind it. Some of these groups consider pets, race horses and farm animals to be "slaves" and advocate violence against facilities that house them to be justified on these grounds, since death (according to them) is preferable to a life of servitude.
I can't find any actual news sources lending any credence to this interpretation; it seems too early to tell what the cause was.

I would not be at all surprised to see that much of the threat aggregate was coming form offshore sources, initially. Al Qaeda would immediately have understood the image problem they potentially have wrt Obama, and threats (however asinine or impotent) would be a reaction I would expect.

How true. I had questions about how much the solar cycle might influence global warming, but after reading the New Scientist link that Charles included in a previous thread, I am convinced that GW is AGW. The question still remains as to what, if anything, we can do. It may be the case that our efforts would be better spent in preparing for the inevitable rather than trying to stave off the inevitable. On the other hand, we must also take into consideration the huge benefit limiting carbon emissions would have for reducing pollution and general waste of nonrenewable energy resources.
Cap and trade is just another scam initiated by crooks who brought us the messes called Enron, sub prime mortgages and so on. See another previous thread.

Pastor Rick Warren Refuses To Condemn Ugandan Law Making Homosexual Acts Punishable By Death
In his book, Sharlet reveals the effects of some of The Family’s other work in Uganda (p. 328):Uganda, which following the collapse of Siad Barre’s Somalia became the focus of the Family’s interests in the African Horn, has been the most tragic victim of their projection of American sexual anxieties. Following implementation of one of the continent’s only successful anti-AIDS program, President Yoweri Museveni, the Family’s key man in Africa, came under pressure from the United States to emphasize abstinence instead of condoms. … Meanwhile, Ugandan souls may be more “pure,” but their bodes are suffering; following the American intervention, the Ugandan AIDS rate, once dropping, nearly doubled.

re: #265 Killgore Trout
That's a problem. Andrew Sullivan is still obsessing over Palin's handicapped child. His involvement in the story makes me think it might be bullshit.
Warrens involvement with several clerics in Uganda who are pushing this vile bill has been noted.
And Newsweek’s Kate Dailey is noting Warren’s failure to respond to the situation in Uganda:
But Warren won’t go so far as to condemn the legislation itself. A request for a broader reaction to the proposed Ugandan anti-homosexual laws generated this response: “The fundamental dignity of every person, our right to be free, and the freedom to make moral choices are gifts endowed by God, our creator. However, it is not my personal calling as a pastor in America to comment or interfere in the political process of other nations.” On Meet the Press this morning, he reiterated this neutral stance in a different context: “As a pastor, my job is to encourage, to support. I never take sides.” Warren did say he believed that abortion was “a holocaust.” He knows as well as anyone that in a case of great wrong, taking sides is an important thing to do.
I would go further.
When you build the platform, put out the chairs, advertise the event, set up the audio system, introduce the speaker, and hand him the mic, it’s disingenuous to claim that you are not taking sides. Rick Warren was significantly responsible for building Martin Ssempa’s influence in Uganda, and releasing a statement that he had “severed contact with Mr. Ssempa” two years ago is not an adequate reaction to Ssempa’s efforts to incarcerate and kill gay people.

His official stance now is that he doesn't think it's appropriate for him to comment on political issues...although that hasn't ever stopped him before, as when he termed abortion a holocaust or pontificated about Prop 8.

I think it's kind of funny they're hating on a cookbook and calendar. These are two little products that I think reflect some of the best aspects of LGF, and they just can't stand to see LGF have anything positive going for it. They can't stand it that the community now could have a great cookbook, and that we'd use it to help others and LGF- the horror! And the calendar? Sorry- none of those people complained about photo threads when they were here. They all said they loved Charles's pics, and I think the haters can't stand it that Charles has found a way to turn his photos into something that will help the blog. So damn petty. Thanks. But PIMF on me. I blew that post, while working on a "Drake" style equation in Excel to show the complexities for an acceptable AGW solution. I think there are many solutions, all the difficulties are about the pain they cause. Two of the numbers-The bad gases, and the number of nations involved. Another will need to be the numbers of natural eco disasters like volcanoes. Global dimming as a factor. etc.
I think a formula like this could be illustrative. The antiidiotarian AGW equation. I hope!

"...“Seven Mountains” theology, a Dominionist theology that calls upon Christians to “establish the Kingdom of God on earth” by claiming possession to “the Seven Mountains of Culture namely: Business, Government, Religion, Family, Media, Education and Entertainment.” Warren Throckmorton explains:
This viewpoint seems to be quite popular among those who follow C. Peter Wagner’s New Apostolic Reformation. Wagner is the Presiding Apostle for the International Council of Apostles, a subsidiary of Global Harvest Ministries which admits new apostles by invitation only.
Wagner’s 2008 book Dominion: How Kingdom Action Can Change the World, is described by the publisher as an exploration of “the biblical roots of dominion theology.” According to Wagner, the task of the church is less about individual salvation and more about taking dominion over the culture by reclaiming seven domains: family, business, arts & entertainment, government, media, education, and religion.
Wagner was Rick Warren' doctoral dissertation adviser.
Some observers have wondered if Purpose Driven Life author and mega-evangelist Rick Warren has had a role in the globally controversial bill, especially because of Warren’s close association with Ugandan anti-gay activist Martin Ssempa and, more broadly, because Warren has refused to denounce the anti-gay bill.
To little notice, a charismatic network overseen by Warren’s doctoral dissertation advisor, C. Peter Wagner, has played a major role in politically organizing and inspiring the Ugandan legislators who have spearheaded the anti-gay bill.

More fun theocrat news:
Sarah Palin says US should rededicate itself to God
Sarah Palin has said the United States should rededicate itself to seeking God's will.
In a video released Friday by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, the 2008 Republican candidate for vice president, said it was important for leaders to recognise they don't have all the answers.
Mrs Palin said: "No one person has all the right answers. It takes a united nation, and it does take godly counsel, and it takes prayer and answers to prayer - and a collective humble heart of a nation seeking God's hand of protection and his blessings of prosperity.
"I think if we can get back to that, our country will be a safer, more prosperous and healthier nation."
The former Alaska governor referred to an Abraham Lincoln proclamation that declared a day of national humiliation, fasting, and prayer.
She said the United States has been "touched by God" because the nation's early leaders dedicated the country to God.
Mrs Palin said: "If we could get back to that, that humbleness, with that kind of contrite spirit, I think that we would be able to be provided more of the answers to so many of the great challenges that we're facing.
"And these are huge challenges, whether we're talking about health care, whether we're talking about energy independence, whether we're talking about national security measures."

The Montana Democrat and his former state office director Melodee Hanes began their relationship in the summer of 2008 after Baucus separated from his wife, Ty Matsdorf told The Associated Press late Friday.
Baucus nominated Hanes for the U.S. attorney post in March. But she later withdrew, saying she had been presented with other opportunities she couldn't pass up.
The Senate leader, helping to manage Democratic health care legislation during a rare session Saturday, had submitted six names to a third-party reviewer, who whittled those to Hanes and two others. Matsdorf said the senator sent the three names to the White House with no ranking to select a nominee.
Matsdorf said Baucus' relationship with his girlfriend had nothing to do with his decision.

Warren mentored one of the primary architects of the law, and Warrens doctoral dissertation adviser seems to be one of the major back room players in getting the law before the Ugandan legislature. This is considered “guidance” and not an official statement from the U.S. State Department. But it is on record at least:
“We are disturbed by violence, harassment, discrimination, exclusion, stigmatization and prejudice that are directed against persons in all countries in the world because of sexual orientation or gender identity. We condemn human rights violations based on sexual orientation or gender identity wherever they occur. We urge states to take all the necessary measures to ensure that sexual orientation or gender identity may under no circumstances be the basis for criminal penalties– in particular, execution arrest or detention. If adopted a bill further criminalizing homosexuality would constitute a significant step backwards for the protection of human rights in Uganda.”

There is some truth there, but it is impolitic to state it now, unfortunately; and much blame can be attached to the self-proclaimed religious types who so publicly screw up, and are obtrusive and not charitable.
It is instructive to remember that Christianity was widely adopted in the declining days of the Roman empire, because it provided practical answers to pressing human problems caused by, and causing, the total crisis of the then dominant system.

The Not So Big Conservative Base
Conservatives have, for many years, taken solace in polls that consistently show that more Americans define themselves as “conservative” than “liberal,” including a recent Gallup poll showing a whopping 20 percent gap in favor of “conservative.” Almost as a mantra, conservatives like to describe the U.S. as a “center-right” country. What Fiorina points out, however, is that rank and file voters are not defining “conservative” in the same way as the pundits and politicos.
[snip]
It is true that other political scientists, such as Emory University’s Alan Abramowitz, have reached different conclusions than Fiorina, but I think Fiorina is the one who is more correct. What Abramowitz notes is that there are big gaps in the electorate on many issues. For example, 76 percent of Democrats favor government guaranteed universal health care, but just 31 percent of Republicans agree. But what Fiorina picks up on, that Abramowitz misses, are questions of tone and degree. Republicans and Democrats may sharply disagree, for example, on abortion or gun rights or gay marriage, on the war in Afghanistan, or on Obama’s regulation of the economy, but a great many Americans, if not most, would simply like to tone all these issues down, whichever side they are on. Pollsters push these voters to choose – “do you support the President’s surge in Afghanistan (or not)?”; “Do you favor Roe v. Wade (or not)?”; “Do you support or oppose the President’s plan for healthcare?” etc. If pushed between such bipolar options, yes, most Americans can take sides. But many may feel that there are pluses and minuses on both sides. They don’t want to be given the either/or choice that the pollsters demand.

Anti-Islamic Demo Turns Nasty In Nottingham
Clashes erupted between police and hundreds of members of the English Defence League during a planned protest in Nottingham.
Hundreds of officers surrounded around 500 EDL supporters in the city centre.
Police on horseback used batons and those on the ground used dogs to contain the violence.

Yesterday I had this funny line from my Jewish boss, about Hanukkah and Passover. He said they were going to see Rabbi Gelson.
Ah, does that bring back good memories! We lived on La Maida street in Encino for a number of years back in the 80's. Gelson's on Ventura was about two blocks from us. Best grocery store ever!! Sushi and some salads from the Deli on Friday nights - absolutely wonderful.

I thought I was getting a handle on it til this revelation. Seriously, who would have suspected that 1 TBSP in a UK recipe doesn't mean the same it does in a US recipe, when it's a liquid measure? Weird!

I lived ten years in Germany and the Celsius scale still means nothing to me in terms of how I'm going to feel when I walk outside. "It's 24 degrees today." OK, fine. Walk outside and see what that feels like. Oh, it's the mid seventies. Nice.
One of my big regrets is that I never got to live in the UK when they still had the eminently rational duodecimal money system.
You should import American measuring cups and spoons and use only olde Englyshe or American cookbooks. That will have the additional advantage that when someone asks you for a favorite recipe, s/he won't be able to reproduce it!

Doc Martens

Well, right you are.
By birth he was Märtens. And a real doctor by trade.
Klaus Märtens was a doctor in the German army during World War II. While on leave in 1945, he injured his ankle while skiing in the Bavarian Alps. He found that his standard-issue army boots were too uncomfortable on his injured foot. While recuperating, he designed improvements to the boots, with soft leather, and air-padded soles. When the war ended and some Germans looted valuables from their own cities, Märtens took leather from a cobbler's shop. With that leather he made himself a pair of boots with air-cushioned soles.
I have never heard that he was a fan of the nastier people who are fans of his shoes.

One of their comments is "the air smalls better over here". Well no. Thanks anyway the "reject the fringe' atmosphere at LGF suits me fine.
"Kos light" is pretty darn accurate. Kos is for wonks.

Off I go -- Mrs. Slap and I have a date with a bunch of electrically-powered colored thingys that we use to decorate our house. (Excited to see this year's electric bill -- in one area alone, I'm running 2 green CFL floodlights and a total of 9 strands of LED lights -- the grand total draw for the bunch is 120 watts combined.)
As a buddy would say, YEEE_HAW!
Have a great day, o scaly scuttlers...

Whatever. Are you a prog?
What is your definition of 'prog'? Does it differ from Rodan's, and if so, how?
