Every witness has his own way of creeping up on the truth.

It helps if you write crib notes on your hand, though.

This is what the terrorists did to me -- and why they should be tried at Gitmo

...I was a federal prison guard at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan. In 2000, I was with a prisoner, Mamdouh Mahmud Salim, taking him back to his cell. His cellmate was Khalfan Khamis Mohamed. They were accused of bombing two embassies in Africa in 1998. Later they said that they worked with Osama bin Laden and that they helped set up al Qaeda.

We were back at their cell. It's only me and those two guys. No supervisors. Just the three of us. Somehow, they slipped out of their handcuffs.

They sprayed me with some kind of hot sauce. I couldn't see. They pulled me into the cell and hit me — boom, boom. They hit me so much, I swear to God, like a hundred times.

I hit my radio. I thought help would come.

They wanted the keys for the other prisoners, but they couldn't find them. They were in my front pocket. I used to be big, 300 pounds, and I was laying on them. I gave them my car keys.

About halfway through, they used a comb — thick and long, about 10 inches, with a handle. They'd taken the teeth out and sharpened it like a knife.

They put it in my left eye. It went three inches into my brain.

Nobody came. I kept calling and nothing. I was in there with them for an hour. It was f- - -ed up.

With my blood, they made the sign of the cross on my chest because they thought I was dead.

Finally, 12 guards came to my aid. They said they had the wrong keys.

When it was over, I got up and walked down toward the infirmary. I wanted to show them I could do it.

I thought I would go to a doctor right away. They kept me at the infirmary.

Finally, I was taken to Bellevue. I thought I was dead. I went into a coma.

They did surgery. I lost my left eye and suffered some brain damage. It was like I had a stroke.

For two years, I couldn't speak. I couldn't write. I couldn't walk. My right eye is perfect — straight ahead. But I can't see to the side. It's like a horse with blinders.

It's better now. I have a gym in my apartment in Coney Island. I do 500 sit-ups a day. I have a speech therapist and a massage therapist. I get up at 3 in the morning, eat some breakfast, cereal and a banana. I can dress myself.

Shiite Militant Group Posts Video of Abducted American in Iraq

BAGHDAD — A missing Iraqi-American contractor was kidnapped by Shiite militiamen who lured him into central Baghdad by promising to help him find distant relatives, an Iraqi defense official said Saturday.

A Shiite extremist group claimed responsibility for the Jan. 23 kidnapping and posted a video online that shows a man wearing military fatigues reading a list of demands that includes the release of militants, the prosecution of Blackwater guards and an immediate American troop withdrawal.

A high-ranking Iraqi defense official and an American intelligence official identified the man in the video as Issa T. Salomi, the missing contractor. Both spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information.

Should we try other inmates who stab people there too? Is that the criteria?

I don't think that anyone had any doubts that these people were violent. But prison guards are supposed to be able to deal with violent prisoners. These aren't supervillans. They don't have special powers.

In a case like that, the terrorist who have just assaulted a guard like that should simply be summarily executed. No further trial, just shot out of hand for continuing to attack after having been captured. As enemy combatants engaged in a further act of unprovoked aggression, they are not entitled to any further consideration.

If they are enemy combatants whom we catch trying to kill a guard, they are engaging in an act of aggression. As such, they can be shot rather than detained, and I would urge such an action.

Whoa! Why was one guard transporting two terrorists who hadn't been searched? This guy was maimed by the protocol in place as much as the two scumbags who attacked him. Epic fail by the penal system. Summarily executed? For a non-fatal assault? Whose root was stupid policy? I understand your frustration, DF, but really...

If they've surrendered, Geneva never allows execution. And that's assuming that Geneva rather than the Constitution is in play, which I do not think was the case, given that he was in a Federal prison in the USA.

Allowing anyone to perform summary executions on unresisting enemies starts us down a very dark road.

Okay. That's an argument that you can make-- though I don't think you're correct to do so.

However, what I am currently arguing against is whether it's okay to summarily execute someone who is not resisting, ever.

I do not believe it ever is, and I do not believe that anyone can wield that level of authority justly.

If they were unresisting, then I would not advocate such a thing, ever. But since they were caught red-handed in an act of attempted murder, I am arguing that they were found in a act of further unlawful aggression and such may be shot instead of being restrained. Does that clarify things acceptably?

Just to get myself on record here, I think that the key to the Super Bowl is going to be the Saints defense. The Colts offense and in particular Peyton Manning is fantastic at making adjustments to beat their opponents. I expect the Saints to lead at the half, and from there it's all on their D. If they can disguise their coverages and keep Manning from seeing what's going to happen before the snap, then the Saints will win, but it will still be close. If Manning and the coaching staff can figure out what they're looking at, the Colts will pull ahead in the second half and win by a couple of touchdowns.

No offense to Hoosier and any other Colts fans, but I'm pulling for the Saints.

That's been discussed at length, to say the least.

In either case your left with two choices: (1) under the Geneva convention, or (2) within the judicial system as it exists.

An attempt to create ad hoc a third way is not what used to be called the "rule of law".

No. Sorry, but we have a fundamental disagreement here. Please respond to my #17.

If your train of thought was applied to all prisoners, any yard fight would result in the summary execution of prisoners, without trial, for assault with bodily injury. It doesn't matter why they are being held. What matters is that their actions are treated consistently with all other prisoners being held in penal institutions. That's the law.

I don't intend for it to be applied to all prisoners. But I regard Islamist terrorists as a special case. Once they prove themselves a continuing danger, even in custody, like these two had done, I submit that they've run out of forbearance and should not be allowed to surrender again.

Its not about weakness, its about not letting them keep attacking us. Once they've proven them won't stop, even in custody, we should keep giving them chances. Doing so is what makes us look weak. Moreover, this policy would only be applied to foreign terrorists, not to American citizens, so issues of Constitutional rights do not apply.

I didn't watch her speech or the Q&A since I value my brain cells and my sanity too much to listen to her, but I'd say she's in this for one person only-- herself.

She's a grifter, plain and simple. I'm sure some part of her believes the BS she's spewing, but I think that overall, the people organizing these Tea Party events have one agenda, and she's got another one.

Her time on the McCain campaign trail got her new, fancy clothes and shoes and people to do her makeup and hair. She suddenly got the fame she'd always wanted. She's got a bunch of delusional people around her feeding her ego, telling her she has a chance at the White House in 2012, and that she's a brilliant leader. If she's got to make a few wingnut speeches and maintain her sheltered, carefully crafted image to keep all of that going and her pockets lined, so be it.

I didn't watch her speech or the Q&A since I value my brain cells and my sanity too much to listen to her, but I'd say she's in this for one person only-- herself.

Wrong answer.

The question was, is she an independent actor.

I believe she knows exactly what she's doing, whose dick she's sucking, and she's in it for the power.

To blog-stalk, or not to blog-stalk: That is the dilemma:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to be banned,
and walk away with dignity, as an adult
Or to scream and make idle threats from afar
Upon virtual digital ramparts, as a virgin child

Oh, she knows exactly what she's doing and whose dick she's sucking, but I think it's for her own self-interest rather than for political power. Both she and the Tea Party types are using each other for their own needs. They have her around to bring in the useful idiots who follow her and think she's brilliant, and she uses the Tea Party types to get paid large sums of money to come and speak.

Unless she's even more delusional than some of her fans, she has to know that she's completely unelectable on the federal level. She was on a losing presidential ticket, she quit her job after 18 months, and she's yet to show anything that would offer any sane voter any confidence that she could effectively serve. But if keeping up the pretense for her fans keeps the money coming in, she'll do it.

Bush got elected to a second term. I don't underestimate the electorate at all.

However, I'm still hopeful that Caribou Barbie won't even make it out of the primaries should she decide to run in 2012. I'd like to think there are still enough sane, non-Tea Party types left to vote against her and to choose a more serious candidate to run against President Obama.

That's my hope anyway. I voted for Obama and don't regret it at all, but I still think a sane, thoughtful opposition party is sorely needed. The Tea Party types, including Caribou Barbie? Not sane, and not thoughtful. If the GOP expect to remain a serious national party, I hope they'd take that into consideration when deciding who to run in 2012.

Yeah, but they posted Hoops name and smeared his charity and charitable efforts.

I agree, they can't do anything, but they caused Hoops pain and for no reason at all. The psychotics over there incorrectly thought he was the author of a pro-LGF blog.

And let me just say that the person writing that blog was perfectly fine with Hoops getting his ass kicked every day for it, and I think he thought it was all 'funny' to goad the stalkers-- so long as other innocent people took the fall for it.

I've known people internet stalked for reals. Pictures taken of their home, their address, phone numbers, names of their relatives posted on forums to enable other people to more easily find them, harrassing emails that were well researched enough to be frightening, the sort of private information that PIs find out. The stuff Charles talks about. less scary than what he endures because these are just geeks angry at geeks, but still fucked up. Michelle Malkin engaged in a little of this during the SCHIP thing.

They're just that evil. It's horrible, but clarifying to know what sorts of personalities we're up against.

What's crazy is I believe Malkin is far less extreme than the Tea Party core. Malkin is a nasty but ultimately insincere agitator, the fast food fake version of the real thing, dancing with James Dobson's crowd because it means her star is rising. There is a dark tar-like river of paranoia, racism, resentment and tribalism running through this country. it's the stuff left over from Reconstruction. it never went away, it just gained density. And now we're seeing it bubble forth.

The former blog dedicated to 'defending' LGF.

Now, who knows why the actual author of it has now blocked it.
But it wasn't Hoops, ever.

And that guy let the stalkers think it was Hoops, and out Hoops, and trash his charity, and I think he thought it was all fun and games for that to happen.

And that guy hasn't posted here since like November.
He also had a big problem with Mullah Buzzsaw being blocked. Or at least, he had a big problem with me, and with Jimmah, ostensibly over dear bs monkey being blocked.
So, maybe that guy just has some personal issues or something in his life, maybe it's all coincidence.

They really are. I've also surprised a few people with Belgian tripels, but they're often hard to get ahold of. For me it was Widmer Hefeweizen, which is sold in quantities greater than Bud in Portland. First it's wheat beers, then it's ambers, then before you know it you're drinking oak aged heavy ales and imperial IPAs.

Israel has failed to show it will conduct an impartial investigation of allegations that it committed war crimes during its Gaza offensive last winter, an international human rights group said Sunday.

The New York-based Human Rights Watch said inquiries by Israel's military have largely focused on possible wrongdoing by individual soldiers without looking into high-level decisions that led to large numbers of civilian casualties, such as artillery fire into populated areas.

Israeli investigators missed an important piece of evidence in one of the most contested incidents of the war, in which Gaza's only flour mill was severely damaged by Israeli fire, said Human Rights Watch, which discussed the ongoing investigations with Israeli military lawyers last week.

"Israel claims it is conducting credible and impartial investigations, but it has so far failed to make that case," said Joe Stork, deputy Middle East director for Human Rights Watch. "An independent investigation is crucial to understand why so many civilians died and to bring justice for the victims of unlawful attacks."

"The principal called me and said, 'I'm sorry, I never meant for it to go this far,'" said Laura Timoney, who also received a call from the superintendent.

Google Joe Stork and you will find a hater of Israel.

According to the quote attributed to Stork, Israel is guilty until proven innocent.

From CAMERA:

Referring to Israel’s victory in the 1967 War, Stork suggested what would be needed for the Arab states to reverse the outcome and destroy Israel:

There were, to be sure, many contributing factors to this devastating defeat, and it would be a mistake to overlook, for example, the degree of imperialist collusion that lay behind the Israeli blitzkrieg. But the single most important cause lay with the failure of the regimes in question to mobilize their societies for the kind of protracted struggle that is critical for the liberation of Palestine. ... the surplus extracted from the masses was used to construct a military machine that was completely inadequate to the task of liberating Palestine ... (p 225)

Since he is speaking of the 1967 war, which predated Israel’s presence in the West Bank and Gaza, it is clear that Stork means by the “liberation of Palestine” the destruction of Israel.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has ordered the further enrichment of his nation's uranium, just days after he said he was open to a U.N. plan to enrich the material abroad.

President Ahmadinejad on Sunday told the nation's nuclear chief, Ali Akbar Salehi, to begin enriching uranium to 20 percent, high enough to power an Iranian reactor that produces nuclear medical material.

The United States and other Western nations are concerned that if the material stays in Iran, the government will enrich it to about 90 percent, at which level it could be used in nuclear weapons.

Few have it easy here. From dawn until deep into the night, there is the clatter of making a living, no matter how small. But these days, Mankarios, his face engulfed by a graying beard, worries more about the increasing discrimination and resentment from Muslims who attack monasteries and teach their children that Christians are infidels.

"It's dangerous today," he said. "Egypt is going in new directions that are starting to affect the harmony between religions. This attitude is evident not only among ordinary Muslims but among top government and Islamic officials."

AMERICAN and British troops poised to assault the Taliban stronghold of Marjah have begun targeting insurgent leaders for assassination.

Military sources said special forces had been infiltrating the town on “kinetic” missions — jargon for armed attacks. “Special forces guys have been going in on assassination missions with the aim of decapitating the Taliban force,” one said.

At the British base of Camp Bastion and the adjoining Camp Leatherneck, the US marine base, troops and munitions have been airlifted in by night to avoid enemy rockets. Under our system, there is limited damage any one person can do. Thank goodness.

FBV if you go back just prior to the election - there were people who feared Obama in this same way. Those folks are now gone, have their own blog. But they had an absolute fear that Obama would turn this country into a "socialist paradise" or some such.

And of course - as we've seen with health care - under our system of government, there are limitations on the person who occupies the office of the President.

I wouldn't want to see Palin elected to a high office, because I've come to believe she is indeed a complete dolt. But if she were - well, there simply would be limited "damage" she could do.

I think that politics is not some "gentleman's game". It is about actual important things that influence the lives of everybody, and it is about people who are not saints, and we (most of us) can only stay interested by being part of a group, and that means a certain amount of group behavior.
So when thinking about whether I approve of the way politicians are talked about I think several things are important: do they have good reasons to hate this person? If the politician was just being partisan, or if people get their information only from sources that have been proven unreliable again and again, or if it's based on race, butthurt, etc, than I don_'t think they have a good reason.
And then I ask myself, is this an expression of reasonable political vitriol that I find ok, in general or for this venue? And I find name calling ok for pub or blog conversation, but I would never call it critique or find it interesting (unless it's very funny, or really drives a valid point home). I don't think lies are ok ever. I don't think using existing systematic discrimination is ever ok (and I think the constant whore/slut, haha she has an adams apple thing does that, as does the "Obama is so narcissist/elitist").
Also, I think of this as a bipartisan blog, so to me, too much name-calling makes the whole point of this blog to me, namely conversation beyond partisanship exponentially more difficult or even impossible.
That said, some liberals avoid the threads about Obama's speeches, and then they come back afterward. that seems a sensible approach to me. When you share space, you compromise.

309 MandyManners  Sun, Feb 7, 2010 6:50:14am

Americans like values, but they don't know which values they like best. The hype over Tim Tebow’s pro-life ad—sponsored by the conservative faith-and-values group Focus on the Family and scheduled to air during Sunday's Super Bowl—is a case in point. When a corporation uses a television ad to sell us a product (car, gadget, hamburger) that we don't want or need, or that harms our health, we don't seem to mind very much. In fact, if that ad promises luscious seminudity or novel ways to crack wise, we tune in eagerly. We analyze, dissect, enjoy. We rehash at the water cooler.

But when an interest group—say, representatives of a religious faith or ideological point of view—engages in such salesmanship, we recoil. "It is offensive to hold one way out as being a superior way," Terry O'Neill, president of the National Organization for Women, told reporters.

Is it really? Isn't promoting one idea over another the foundation of free debate—and, more crassly, the business of advertising? Doesn't Coke employ ads to prove that it's better than Pepsi? My husband and I spend more hours than we want to explaining to our daughter the differences between the stuff she wants and the stuff she needs—and the failure of television advertising to help her know the difference. We try to teach her, in other words, to think for herself. Can't Super Bowl watchers do the same thing for abortion? Does Tim Tebow—because of his aw-shucks charm and his physical gifts—hold some secret power of persuasion that trumps an individual's lifetime of experience and decision making on moral questions? What's so scary here?

Thanks! But note: the second is more of a general strategic point. I absolutely have seen people throwing around all sorts of things here without thinking any less of them. I think there comes a point when calling someone a name and thereby stopping the discussion is the only sensible and appropriate thing to do, and I also think that it should be no problem if someone gets too excited during a discussion and then apologizes.

The Haitian lawyer for 10 U.S. Baptists charged with child kidnapping tried to bribe the missionaries' way out of jail and has been fired, the attorney who hired him said Saturday night.

The Haitian lawyer, Edwin Coq, denied the allegation. He said the $60,000 he requested from the Americans' families was his fee.

Jorge Puello, the attorney in the neighboring Dominican Republic retained by relatives of the 10 American missionaries after their arrest last week, told The Associated Press that he fired Coq on Friday night. He had hired Coq to represent the detainees at Haitian legal proceedings.

Coq orchestrated "some kind of extortion with government officials" that would have led to the release of nine of the 10 missionaries, Puello charged.

"He had some people inside the court that asked him for money, and he was part of this scheme," Puello said.

Authorities say a Wyoming woman was assaulted at her front door, raped at knifepoint in her living room and left bound on the floor, and they say one of the men charged in the brutal attack claimed that he thought it was invited.

Two men are accused in the crime. One is charged with carrying out the rape. The other, the woman's ex-boyfriend, stands accused of posing as the victim online and claiming she harbored a rape fantasy and wanted to be assaulted.

SNIP

A few days before the Casper woman was raped, she had complained to the Natrona County Sheriff's Department that someone had made a false Craigslist posting about her, including photographs and personal information. The ad read, "Need a real aggressive man with no concern for women," authorities said.

Craigslist took the advertisement down when the woman complained. Yet prosecutors say it was posted long enough to catch the attention of McDowell, a medical technologist.

SNIP

"McDowell admitted to going to the victim's residence ... and having sexual contact with (the woman) to fulfill a 'rape fantasy' for her," Sexton wrote.

McDowell told investigators that he had corresponded with a person he thought was the woman at an e-mail address featured on the advertisement, Sexton wrote.

However, prosecutors charge that McDowell was actually communicating by e-mail with Stipe, the woman's former boyfriend. They say Stipe posted the ad to set the woman up for the attack without her knowledge.

Because I think this is a false equivalency. The most vocal and numerous of the people who think Obama will destroy the country think he's a communist, or at least somehow ideologically opposed to capitalism as it is commonly understood, and also that he is stupid. The most vocal and numerous of the people who think Palin would destroy the country think she is religious in a way that clouds her thinking, has no integrity and is not educated/intelligent enough for the job. Exactly. The hatred for Obama is more about the hatred for Democrats and liberals in general and entirely based on lies about who he is.

Palin was involved in numerous scandals in Alaska. The Wasilla building contracts, the forced resignation of the librarian, some others I can't recall. She showed real reasons where she abused her power.

I think that the idea (which I do not hold) that Obama is a communist and the idea that Palin is religious in a way that clouds her thinking (which I do believe), are equally distasteful, in that we do not want these types of people holding high office in our country.

And of course the reasons for the hate are things that can be checked - which is how I came to believe that Obama is NOT a communist (and I did not vote for him), and it's how I came to believe Palin's thinking is cloudy.

There's good reason for argument and differing opinions; I simply do not believe that it is necessary to resort to name calling (narcissist in chief; Nazi whore; etc.) in order to express one's beliefs, arguments or dissent.

Mandy made the point that "narcissist" is a different sort of "name-calling", than "Nazi whore".

I disagree - both insults are ways to simply shut down the discussion before any discussion can take place as to WHY a person believes the insult fits. I'm more interested in knowing the process that a person used to form his/her opinion, than I am in knowing the person's final conclusion (the insult).

President Barack Obama said some interesting things in his Jan. 27 State of the Union address. They're interesting not so much because they're lies, but because the political class -- the kind of people who field lobbyists in Washington and file lawsuits for the ACLU and edit major American newspapers -- was so confident that these utterances were lies that it simply ignored what might otherwise have been some earthshaking developments.

For instance, the president said, according to the White House's prepared transcript: "We should continue the work of fixing our broken immigration system -- to secure our borders, enforce our laws, and ensure that everyone who plays by the rules can contribute to our economy and enrich our nation."

I liked Sarah Palin when she first arrived on the scene, but I admit that the politician that I liked was the vetted version of Sarah Palin, not the authentic version.

Now that she's on her own and her mouth and brain are working together in sync - without vetting from a middleman - I like her less and less with each passing day. The real Sarah Palin has emerged and sadly, she's little more than a whining, ungrateful, vindictive narcissist... an ideology-driven political opportunist who plays directly to the red meat crowd. I cringe every time that she opens her mouth these days.

Any credibility that she may have had with me in the past has gone down the crapper.

Ok... East Coast, you got some fucking snow... big deal. Information has become entertainment to the point that actual humans are sounding like they are dropping brain cells every time they open their mouths.

I lived on the East Coast for 24 years. Guess what, you have seen 2 or more feet of snow before. You have had temperatures below freezing. You have had airports closed down before due to snow and ice.

You're not special. If you didn't get that last gallon of milk at the store, chill, drink water. Or did all public utilities disappear too? The world is not coming to an end. Sit back, relax and watch the Super Bowl or something.

By the way, it's snowing here at 8200 feet in the Rocky Mountains 45 miles west of downtown Denver.

Good morning everyone. The snow has stopped but the digging out hasn't quite started. When I'm ready, I'm going to take the dog for a walk. Then I'll return home and join my housemate in the shoveling. My main goal now is shoveling a path to the grill so I can cook the chicken I bought on Friday. Then the driveway.

You mean you're not running around like Chicken Little screaming about the end of the world? Good for you... according to NPR, everyone on the East Coast has lost any critical brain function and will die in the next 24 hours.

SNIP

Color me naive or forgetful, but I keep reading a reproachful, 'Bush got elected to a second term' in recent posts. What was the alternative again?

That's the other half of the equation.

Bush should never have gotten a second term, IMO, but the Democrats were stupid enough to nominate John Kerry of all people. It was mind-boggling. I almost didn't bother voting that year because Bush was a sure win here in Texas and my vote would've been pointless, but I did anyway. I think I ended up going Libertarian that year just out of protest over the lame Democratic ticket.

As heinous as she was in governing Alaska (see: all the investigations against her), I do not like Palin because she stands for a really nasty sort of anti-intellectualism. Why does she talk about the president like he's some "egghead" professor? He was one, yes (not an 'egghead'), and if you learned about how he got to that point in his life, you might be a little humbled over it. Yet, she calls him out on it, not considering how she herself went to five colleges in six years.

I'm guessing that a lot of us are not just trying to score cool-points, we honestly don't like her. There happens to be much not to like.

Yes, everyone who was posting at the time. If there were others who disagreed, they didn't speak out. I do recognize that they may have been bullied into not speaking out. No one likes to be piled on.

And most all of those posters have been banned which is a good thing.

I was here, and I did the same thing then that I usually try to do now - scroll on past.

I did NOT agree with the pile on of Avanti when he first showed up, and I did NOT agree with the pile-on of Iceweasel when she showed up, and tried to "play nice", as several of the now-banned posters put it when they reamed me out about it.

Quoting your 343:

So excuse me if I don't have a lot of sympathy for the Right when they get their noses tweaked. If it bothers folks so much, they don't have to post.

You're not necessarily aware of everything that goes on. And so right now, you'll have to excuse ME if I don't have a lot of sympathy for you at the moment.

Watching the inability of DC to cope with a yard of snow is truly iconic. Perhaps we should elect some legislators with coping skills? From places with harsh weather. Or people from hard neighborhoods. Continually electing the pampered class is a rot from within. Here in California, I'm not holding my breath.

Indeed.
But we still have a "butthurt" contingent here who bully others on a near-daily basis, and quietly organize pile-ons behind the scenes... when good people object to this kind of behavior they're mocked and ridiculed in public.

It generates a lot of bad karma and it really detracts from the quality of the conversation here at LGF.

My two cents.

re: #350 Alouette

The reason annefrance holds the downding record is not because he/she/it criticized Palin, but for saying that Trig should have been aborted. No one who claims to be "pro choice" should make such comments about the choice of someone else.

One of the pro choice "platforms" as it were, is that a woman should have the right to make the decision to abort a child who will knowingly be born disabled. Annefrance criticized Palin for bringing such a child into the world and in criticizing her, she was also criticizing others who would not allow a woman that decision. That's how I read her at the time.

Personally, I wouldn't make such bold statements even if I believe in them, because I do find them appropriate on a public forum. It was Palin's right to have Trig, as it is everyone's else in that position. It's also anyone's right to decide they cannot care for such a child.

365 lawhawk  Sun, Feb 7, 2010 7:56:30am

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. We saw nary a snowflake yesterday in these parts, but just a few miles south and the fun started. 50 miles south, the fun got serious; and 100 miles beyond that, we're talking tremendous fun (if you're a snow lover, that is).

They're saying that these snows are for the record books. Cool. I like records. Just bear in mind that these snows would be mere trifles if they happened in someplace like the Rocky Mts. or across the Southern Tier of NY where these amounts are common.

It just happened to hit one of the most densely populated areas of the nation, and tens of millions of people are affected. And some of those states and localities involved don't have the money in their budgets to deal with snow removal so this is driving them even further into the red.

Parts of NJ got more than 2 feet of snow. MD, DE, and DC got upwards of 2 feet. If that kind of amount fell in NYC, it would cost $1 million per inch. That's money that these municipalities do not have. Expect state of emergencies throughout the East Coast.

Oh, and there's word that a mid-week storm could provide another heaping portion of snow somewhere on the East Coast (that's the storm that caused all the mudslides and rain on the West Coast).

Seeking to tap into growing anti-establishment discord among voters, the Republican Party is actively seeking candidates who have never before held elected office.
Bruce O'Donoghue owns a company that makes traffic-light systems; he is challenging Florida Democratic Rep. Alan Grayson. Jon Runyan, a former player for the Philadelphia Eagles and San Diego Chargers, is running in southern New Jersey.

the peoples House...point of contact with the feds, ordinary citizens...it's hard to argue with this strategy

A lack of sympathy for you is no more an attack on you than your lack of sympathy for me is an attack on me.

Yes, I was basically called an "uncle tom". There was a time when I was frantically sending out e-mails, asking people to tone it down, keep it nice. And the response was that I was a "traitor", not worth the time of day. So yes, it did happen to me, but not online.

When you said "everyone", that was an attack on me. You have more than once expressed your contempt for me. I was here then; I am a "rightie". You don't like that I didn't call people out; the thing is that I did, but not online. You don't know everything that goes on.

I simply said my personal preference is to avoid the name-calling.

the fine art of digging at someone in a clever and friendly way is almost lost...people tend to be much more aggressive and sooner than in the past...name calling is the first tool in the box nowdays

During the Cold War, Soviet bloc dissidents had to rely on primitive printing technologies to reproduce samizdat literature in tiny quantities. Today's dissidents living under authoritarian regimes around the world can disseminate their message world wide with the click of a mouse, through blog postings and viral videos. And, as Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced in a recent speech, the United States plans to champion their cause by enabling unprecedented freedom of speech on the Internet, in defiance of all political censorship.

"While it is clear that the spread of [new communication] technologies is transforming our world, it is still unclear how that transformation will affect the human rights and human welfare of the world's population," noted Clinton. That's because "on their own, new technologies do not take sides in the struggle for freedom and progress, but the United States does; we stand for a single Internet where all of humanity has equal access to knowledge and ideas."

Eight congressional Republicans on Friday alleged the Obama administration is trying to "appease"' the Cuban government after the arrest in Havana of a Washington subcontractor, and called for the cancellation of bilateral migration talks now set for Feb. 19.

"We are greatly concerned about the manner in which the administration is handling the arrest of Alan Gross'' and its impact on the U.S. government's pro-democracy programs in Cuba, they wrote in a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Gross, a Maryland subcontractor for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), has been jailed in Havana since his Dec. 4 arrest after delivering sophisticated communications equipment to Jewish groups on the island.

The 60-year-old Gross, of Potomac, Md., is a veteran development specialist who has been involved with several programs to provide Internet access to civil society groups around the world.

I've always liked Charles more than the posters. I mean as a general statement. I'd like to think "I got him." The former blog dedicated to 'defending' LGF.

IMO he is dirt.

Sorry to jump in on a comment from so far up-thread, but I agree with you. We have actually seen Reginald Perrin put in a couple of appearances last month but those were mostly a few updings with maybe 1 or two comments. As for BSM,I see why RP would feel loss over his departure because I did too. But I got over it once I leaned why he got the gate. It's not worth it to cry over the banning of someone who posted obscenities about a fellow lizard and now posts on the stalker blog. Such a person is a horse's ass and we shouldn't weep for them.

One time while out shopping with hubby #1, we came upon two thugs harassing an old man for using the handicap space. He had a sticker, but didn't "look" handicapped, meaning he didn't have a wheelchair or walker. Most sane people know that lots of folks get those stickers for all kinds of reasons, cancer patients or heart patients because they may not be able to walk distances.

Anyway it was one of the times I was proud of hubby #1. It was getting close to fist-to-cuffs (that is two 20 somethings v. an old handicapped man) and though hubby was probably a foot shorter than them, he ran them off.

To be honest, Mandy, the latter looks better and is considered more professional. Palin's actions strike me as Amateur Hour. I'd rather see BHO's two teleprompters and a typewritten page than notes scrawled on the palm.

I miss arguing with him, and of course his puns and song parodies were without equal. Ultimately he just couldn't handle some of the changes here and the parting of ways was probably best for all concerned.
However, for certain folks to keep harping on this is to me the height of pettiness, and perhaps worse.

Exactly. I believe what I believe on that subject, but I have never been in a position where I had to make "the decision", so I honestly cannot judge those who have and chose what I personally believe to be wrong. But I will NEVER publicly condemn/judge them for doing so, nor would I give one cent to any group that does. I feel it's one of those very, very private and soul-searching decisions that some people have to make. I don't have a problem with pro-life groups educating people pre-decision, so to speak, but unfortunately it appears that practice isn't conducted in a non-threatening way. I myself have counseled a unmarried pregnant teen, and accompanied her to a Pregnancy Care class. It was done well, without photos of aborted babies, etc. She ultimately chose abortion, but I did NOT turn my back on her. I was personally devastated (and privately cried), but I did nothing to make her feel guilty after the fact.

Most have some sort of notes whether teleprompters, paper or note cards. I've seen very few who don't have something, especially if it's a one off type speech. If it's the same speech that's been given a zillion times then those things aren't used as much or the person doesn't need to refer to it as much. Many pols will also have notes with them, especially if it's a more in depth panel type event where very specific questions might come up about detailed things like stats or specific numbers on specific topic. There's nothing wrong with that, it's very common practice.

It's amazing isn't it. I don't understand how some people make it through a day without having heart palpitations or something. Being downright mean and ugly is not acceptable, but it happens, deal with it. Being sarcastic and satirical happens, every day, Comedy Central and The Onion are both extremely popular places.

We've had all sorts of comment here indicating that some people
see no problem with using certain words. But, as soon as you start playing with those words, my goodness, sweats break out, the whole fucking balance of the planet goes off and some people have to go rushing to grab a tree in order to regain footing.

Eh, she's no better a performer than she is a political leader. She's a slick product, as her marketers believe, and they expect good sales for a while yet from her. "I think, kind of tougher to put our arms around, but allowing America's spirit to rise again by not being afraid to kind of go back to some of our roots as a God fearing nation where we're not afraid to say especially in times of potential trouble in the future here, where we're not afraid to say, you know, we don't have all the answers as fallible men and women so it would be wise of us to start seeking some divine intervention again in this country, so that we can be safe and secure and prosperous again. To have people involved in government who aren't afraid to go that route, not so afraid of the political correctness that you know – they have to be afraid of what the media said about them if they were to proclaim their alliance to our creator."

Yes there is a difference between giving a speech and spontaneous debate especially if the answers are SUPPOSED to be spontaneous. The hand notes is pretty funny and I've been having a good chuckle about it. If the question is something really specific about the statistics or about some sort of more obscure policy then referring to a note about it isn't really a big deal at least in my experience. If the question however is really open and pretty much a softball, more about just relating some general party or personal talking points then yeah cribbing it like that is pretty funny, especially if you actually know about the question before hand. It's just really funny theatre in that case. Kinda like actor not being able to remember their lines.

Here it's just has an added layer of humor because of the whole OMG teleprompter thing thats been going on.

An explosion at a Connecticut power plant has caused "mass casualties."

Breaking news on CNN. No actual reports yet.

[Link: www.courant.com...]

More at the Hartford Courant:

MIDDLETOWN - Witnesses and emergency response authorities said as many as 100 people were injured and an undetermined number may have died when a massive explosion, which homeowners more than 10 miles away and mistook for an earth quake, blew up a power plant being built on the Connecticut River in the southern section of Middletown.

An hour after the explosion and what is believed to be the Kleen Energy Systems plant on River Road, emergency rescue personnel were continuing to arrive by vehicle and helicopter. Helicopters were airlifting victims to area hospitals.

Neighbors of the plant said as many as 100 employees may have been working there when the explosion took place. Confirmed information about damage and injuries from authorities was difficult to obtain.

A resident of East Hampton almost directly across the river from the plant said he heard a load booming explosion at about 11 a.m. Immediately afterward his house was hit with a concussion that caused him to believe someone had driven an automobile into his home. The concussion interrupted services at a nearby East Hampton church, causing parishioners to speculate that the area had just experienced an earthquake.

Other witnesses said they felt the concussion as far away as North Branford and Durham.

A neighbor of the plant said there were quantities of natural gas on the site.

A witness looking at the destruction from across the river in Portland said the main plant building seemed to have been substantially leveled.

State police fire and explosive investigators were rushing to the scene at around noon Sunday, as well as state police urban rescue crews, which would search rubble for victims.

From skimming through the comments posted I see Sarah is still the least favorite person of the decade around here, and I can't blame you! She has to be the most inane, insipid and boring speaker I've ever seen. I tried very hard not to yell at the TV (which I'm prone to doing on a regular basis, I do it to commercials and pundits all the time) but I wasn't very successful. RWC gets pissed off at me because I like to yell at the TV a lot, but hey, what the heck! No one but him listens to me anyways (especially the pundits and the politicians) and when he's online blogging with you folks he doesn't listen to me either because he's too busy reading your posts! Not that I blame him for that, I do the same thing, it was out of pure self defense that I join LGF in the first place or I'd be a LGF widow!

Apropos of the Year of the Tiger starting next Sunday, thought I'd pull up my generic Chinese horoscope and see what I've got to look forward to:

"The Ox loves methodical planning and everything working out in the correct time. The Year of the Tiger will throw all this to the wind with its fast pace and unexpected developments! People born under this sign may find 2010 a challenge but in a good way. The Ox will have to adapt to new routines, delays and obstacles thrown in his way, but he will be well able for any task and may find new hidden talents and personal power he didn’t know existed. Hobbies, relaxing pursuits and friendships will all be beautifully highlighted during the Year of the Tiger and will provide a welcome relief to any stresses he may face. Home improvements and redecorating plans will move forward smoothly with excellent results. Career opportunities will present themselves from April to June, while exciting, intense romantic encounters are likely in July, August and December. An important aspect for those under this sign in 2010 is to be mindful and caring of loved ones. It will be crucial to listen to them and also to accept any help they may offer during this changeable year."

Great - I'm gonna get the bejeesus whip-sawed outta me by the Tiger Year after enduring the Ox Year's doubling effect on the labor I have to complete.

That intense romantic encounters bit for the Summer seems unlikely, and this for at least three reasons:

1) It's too darned hot, to quote the great Cole Porter;
2) I'm married, so that's right out; and
3) I've got three kids.

Many years ago, I ran an small Novell/DOS network (30 users). My boss was set to give a speech about the newfangled paperless office when the night before the speech, he told me he had double booked himself and I had to do the paperless office speech. I panicked. For one, I have a bit of a stammer that tends to show itself when I'm nervous. For two, I never gave a public speech to anyone and this was in front of 50 librarians.

I was always told that you never have crib notes when giving a speech. You should know what you're saying. But I had about 12 hours to come up with something so I just said screw it, I'm bringing a cheat sheet.

I walked to the podium and opened my mouth to speak and nothing came out. Nothing. I was standing there with my mouth agape with all these eyes on me. I forced the air out of my lungs which literally came out as a croaking sound, "Hi! I'm Marjorie Moon and I've brought my crib notes to discuss a paperless office with you." I waved the paper in the air and got a resounding laugh from them all. That really did help my get through it.

Isn't it fun being one of the few "round eyes" in the group?//
I felt (most of the time) like a very small fish in a bowl of very large fish and one wrong word or miss step could spell the end of me. Needless to say the philosophy lessons we took did help me feel a little less uncomfortable and helped me look at our situation with less intimidated eyes. Now the lessons in Chinese didn't help a bit and were a huge FLOP! If some of the younger members hadn't gone out of their way to make friends with us we would have been relegated to a very small corner of the room and totally ignored.

I've mentioned this before, but word counting for analyzing content is actually a science. Even though it may be being used by certain people in a very unscientific way, it is not silly or obsessive or stupid.

Just because you feel it's stupid, maybe you should look in to the science. There is a lot of validity to it when used properly.

Question for you re: Chinese calendar. I look up my birthdate and find different "year of the" answers. Can you direct me to a trusted site?

There's really no one site that works. See, because they use a lunar calendar for this festival, and because the standard calendar (the one used for regular stuff) is a solar one, there's always a mis-match of a couple days between them.

We have here a fellow who can more or less cast the horoscope - he's a missionary, and yet... - and I've always relied on his general determination of the date and such.

it gets really complicated, as he's glad to explain, because there are sub-cycles (the five elements and such) rotating throughout and among the years, to the point that the day and even your more or less hour of birth make a difference.

Overall, though, I'd say to check out the Taiwan consulate's website:

Or the PRC's NY branch, although PRC don't really have much on it.

I've got a copy of the Analects with a broken spine. I read it through every now & again to make sure I understand what's going on around me with the older folk. Folk under 40, though, are fairly easy to deal with, at least in my experience.

Thanks. Didn't see anything specific to the calendar of past years - will remain Rat-Boar for now.

I'm sorry, where exactly did I trash anything more than the recent silly, obsessive, and stupid practice by some to count how many times a politician says "I" in a speech?

Did you read the article? Did you check for the multiple websites that contain peer-reviewed scientific papers on this subject? It may not be something you want to do, I don't even care about it, but it's far from a stupid practice.

Show me why it's stupid?

Fun place. Used to be a big mining town (Open pit copper). Now it's a serious artsy-fartsy hangout community with lots of fun bars & overpriced bad restaurants. Probably the highest concentration of liberals off of a campus in Arizona.

If you're going there, also go to Tombstone & check out the museums at Ft. Huachuca, both just down the road a bit. Ft. H is how I ended up in Bisbee a couple of times when I was there during GW1.

I've told this story many times but its worth telling again:
RWC and I went over to a family home of one of the temple members where they had a dojo in the garage. RWC had been a student of martial arts for about eight years at that point and we and been members of the temple for about 4 years. The youngest son, who was about 22 at the time had invited RWC to come work out that day so I went along like I always do. In the back yard was a very nice pool and the sun was warm so I took off my shoes and put my feet in the pool and took out my book and I sat in the sun reading. After about an hour I saw movement from the corner of my eye, someone was watching me from a window and soon as I smiled at them they disappeared from the window with a frown. About 5 minutes later the son, whom had invites us over, came out and asked me to take my feet out of the pool. I was kinda confused but he wouldn't tell me why. I found out later that the Parents didn't want me to "Contaminate" their pool by putting my feet into it. Seems that they were insulted that I would feel free to touch their "clean water" with my dirty Caucasian feet. After that incident I made a point of keeping my distance from all of the elders at the temple. The Master of the Temple noticed and asked me why, when I told him he shook his head and apologized for the insult. I just smiled my acceptance but I kept my distance from then on anyway.

I don't dispute the usefulness of content analysis.

I dispute the notion that counting the occurrences of the word "I" allows one to infer that the speaker is a narcissist.

The reason annefrance holds the downding record is not because he/she/it criticized Palin, but for saying that Trig should have been aborted. No one who claims to be "pro choice" should make such comments about the choice of someone else.

That was part of it, but you have to admit that Sarah was untouchable here for a long time.

And I've seen at least one poster here accuse the Clintons of multiple murders, and get much less response than Cato's acting out last night did.

What punches people's buttons is not perfectly impartial for most of us, though we may wish it were.

I love Bisbee. It was a perfect honeymoon town. So quaint. My mom lives in Tucson so I've been there many times.

Also take in the cave sites. Kartchner Cavern (it's a "dead" cave as they say, nothing is currently growing) is extraordinary beautiful and also in the area.

I just came back to this thread to check later replies, and I scrolled up to find the disgraceful comments about "Defenseman"... an individual who is as kind and decent as they come. A man who is no longer posting for personal reasons, and is not here to defend himself.

re: #334 Irish Rose

So lizards... I've been away most of the week and I have a lot of catching up to do.

Did I miss anything earth-shattering?
Dramatic flounces? Controversy? Cat fights? Moral outrage?
Did anyone go off the deep end?

Gee, Rose, you know I really have no idea. Why don't you tell us? :

[Link: littlegreenfootballs.com...]

Yeah you are totally out of touch with LGF, so much so that you have to ask people what's going on, yet are somehow able to bitch about alleged stuff that is happening every day. Rose, you are a lying shit stirrer, and a laughably transparent one at that.

And as for organising pile-ons, that is what you are doing by commenting here in this way. In fact, ever since last October, trying to start fights with iceweasel and myself seems to be the only thing that brings you to LGF. So if anyone has been bullying, it's you - only you failed, and are now doing what every bully has always done in my experience, when beaten - turn on the waterworks and pretend that YOU are the victim.

Pathetic. And btw - I haven't said anything here yet about defenseman, I have no idea why is isn't posting anymore, but he absolutely did let Hoops take the fall for being behind defencemans's site.

The downding is for even mentioning Jimmah, who wasn't even in this thread.

He let Hoops take the fall for what he was doing.

Just to clarify, DF-- since I see irish rose was happy to downding you, but not at all inclined to set the record straight-- I wasn't talking about RP. RP was not defenseman.
