The Arc of a Conspiracy Theory

Wingnuts • Views: 2,850

Far right conspiracy lunacy is now well entrenched even on sites that used to be considered “mainstream conservative” — like townhall.com.

Yesterday at Townhall, conservatives were served up a piping hot slice of deranged conspiracy-mongering from Floyd and Mary Beth Brown: Could the Obama Administration be Blocking Gulf Clean-up Efforts Intentionally?

Any time an article starts off with “this may sound like a conspiracy theory,” it is.

At first blush this sounds like an outlandish question with a conspiratorial twist. The corollary question goes like this: Is the Obama administration intentionally scaling back clean-up efforts in the Gulf in an attempt to maximize the damage so Democrats in Congress will have an excuse to take effective control over yet another major sector of our economy and impose crippling and draconian new taxes on the American people?

We first learned of this controversy reading Sher Zieve who wrote in the Canada Free Press: “Obama is doing the bare minimum so that destruction will be at an all-time maximum — in order to shove his Cap and Trade bill (which will complete our destruction) down our throats.”

In this numbingly stupid article you can track the arc of a developing wingnut fantasy, originating at Canada Free Press (the Canadian equivalent of World Net Daily, but possibly even more bugeyed nuts), then to townhall.com (with 96 commenters as I write, all of them wholeheartedly convinced that the monstrous Obama Thing is deliberately poisoning the Gulf of Mexico like a comic book super-villain), and finally spilling all over the raving wingnut blogosphere.

I am on the fourth blush here, and it STILL sounds like an outlandish question with a conspiratorial twist.

I went to check those 96 comments but the first few were so demented that I had to stop reading before my brain exploded. I was expecting that the only 96 right-wing idiots in the country would be saying, "well shucks, those Canadians might have a point!" Instead it's (this is just from the first reply) "Their blood (the 11 BP employees) cries out for JUSTICE as the NAKED EMPEROR sits in his Counting House - with their blood upon his hands."
Whew.

I can't believe anyone even repeats these conspiracy theories. You'd think the response to this would be akin to the response after 9/11...our country, or a large geographic part of it at least, is under attack from a largely unseen enemy (oil) and is looking at possibly 30 years of recovery (a conservative estimate). Nobody in their right mind would think that anyone, ANYONE (including those who dislike our president because he's a Democrat) would waste time arguing otherwise.

It's time these self-proclaimed 'brilliant' people stopped being part of the problem and started being part of the solution.

I know...my family believes this shit. On mother's day, we started talking about the oil spill. My dad said something about the EPA being the reason this happened, and rather than argue, I just said, "You know, you're right. We should just trust the oil companies to do what's best for our environment and the country. They're the experts." He thought for a second, then laughed and said I had a point...but he still doesn't trust the government. It was then that I explained how, 21 years after the Exxon Valdez, there is still no herring industry in Alaska. It died within two years, and the herring have yet to return. My dad, being an avid sportsman, was amazed, then pissed at that fact. I then said, "Imagine not having gulf shrimp and oysters for the next 20 to 30 years." Then I let it go, because I knew it was enough information for him to process.

You're correct, we haven't, as a country, felt the impact of this yet, and we will all at some point feel it. I just hope it's minimal.

Didn't Obama, right before the Deepwater Horizon blowout announce the opening of new areas for drilling? Why would he do that, and then shut everything down after this incident as a back-door "cap and trade". The progression of events just doesn't make sense, if that's what he was trying to do. Also, there is no indication he, or the agencies involved, are deliberately trying to slow down the clean up.

Coast Guard has made some bad decisions in recent days, but a call to the White House got it cleared up. and the Coast Guard got orders to stop stopping the ongoing clean-up activities for inspections, but make recommendations instead. That doesn't seem to be something that would be done by a man trying to "slow down" the clean up.

Now, it's no secret that I am against the moratorium he called because I think it's useless and not needed, and stands to make things very very difficult (NOT for me personally, but for my State and my heart just breaks), but that's the only really bad action he's taken thus far in this, IMO.

I refuse to be outraged over the BP PR machine. They are doing what any other company's PR unit would do in this situation.

Of course they are.
I personally find it very interesting though, that they aren't playing any ads here.

Probably for good reason. If folks here saw this ad:

Oh they're playing here in CA. Local LA guy who's in charge of the claims, saying he'll do everything possible.

we'd know it ain't exactly spot on. BP has been very slow to pay those claims, is paying pennies on the dollar, and has agreed several times to cooperate with local officials on these claims, except they never actually get around to the actual cooperating part.

I've seen enough of those BP ads. Watching them, and watching the feed from the spill site, would induce cognitive dissonance vertigo in anyone who tried to believe the ads about how green BP is.

BP.

Beyond Pathetic.

The rest of the oil industry has a clue about safety. Exxon wasn't able to fire their drunken skipper, because being a drunk and driving a supertanker isn't a crime, it's a disability. For real.

But at least Exxon did what it could. They hired him instead to cash his paycheck monthly, and didn't put him back at the helm.

I remember him spewing conspiracy theories from all over the place during the Clinton years, including the Jerry Falwell-funded "Clinton Chronicles" where there was an attempt to tie Bill Clinton to the supposedly-mysterious deaths of various supporters and detractors - (thorough debunking by Snopes here).

Currently he's running another conspiracy site (this one anti-Obama), complete with "sekrit Mooslim" garbage.

I'm not sure, I have to admit I haven't been following the story as closely as others. There was a claim about the feds not allowing a certain type of boom to be used. It ended up being because they were defective and didn't work properly. There are many concerns but it's a mistake to jump to conclusions. re: #136 Killgore Trout

I'm not sure, I have to admit I haven't been following the story as closely as others. There was a claim about the feds not allowing a certain type of boom to be used. It ended up being because they were defective and didn't work properly. There are many concerns but it's a mistake to jump to conclusions. Let this thing play out and I'm sure there will be plenty of legitimate blame to pass around to all those involved. Trying to jump in too early is probably not going to score big political points. We haven't even capped the well yet. There's much more to come.

well said, there. my sentiments exactly.

He may have done in order to get bipartisan support for a future energy bill.
Someday the president has got to realize that it is a waste of time trying to compromise with Republicans, it always backfires.

And if he hadn't tried that particular compromise, if he'd refused to even consider opening more offshore drilling, he'd be in a much stronger position right now.

He sacrificed an "I told you so" for nothing.

re: #161 reine.de.tout

Yes, from your link:

Six berms are rising off the state's coast, all aimed at stopping oil sheens from moving farther inland. It's not a federal project, but rather an idea dreamed up by parish and state officials. The Governor says he spent nearly four weeks begging BP and federal officials to greenlight the plan. During his helicopter tour today, Jindal says he could clearly see oil ponding outside the berms that have already taken shape.

The Governor claims a total of 24 berms are needed to seal off the most sensitive areas of the coast. He hopes that once federal officials see how effective the first six berms are, they will sign off on building 18 more. Not only might the berms stop oil from washing inland, they could also serve as barriers from the storm surge from any hurricane that might approach Louisiana.

Well, we can do nothing about hurricane season, it is upon us, if a storm stirs up and comes this way, well, it comes this way.

The sand berms actually are partially replacing some parts of those barrier islands that have disappeared over several years. They should offer a slight bit more protection, but would of course be damaged.

What I'm more worried about is the boat they have out there doing the oil capture - if a storm brews, it will have to get out of the way, and whatever is flowing will flow 100% with no capture for the few days it takes to get out of the way, have the storm pass, and get back to the area.

I will say this:
For 30 years, Louisiana has had coastal restoration plans on the bookshelf. No one has been interested. This administration seems interested. That's a very good thing.

re: #174 RayGunIsDead

Give me your best parable. I am so snocked. RadioHead is screaming.

One of my favorites.

When a woman who had lived a sinful life in that town learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee's house, she brought an alabaster jar of perfume, and as she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.

When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, "If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is — that she is a sinner."

– Luke 7:36-39

According to Luke, Jesus responds as follows:

40Jesus said to the Pharisee, "Simon, I have something to say to you."

"Teacher, what is it?" Simon replied.

41Jesus told him, "Two people were in debt to a moneylender. One of them owed him five hundred silver coins, and the other owed him fifty. 42Since neither of them could pay him back, the moneylender said that they didn't have to pay him anything. Which one of them will like him more?"

43Simon answered, "I suppose it would be the one who had owed more and didn't have to pay it back."

"You are right," Jesus said.

44He turned toward the woman and said to Simon, "Have you noticed this woman? When I came into your home, you didn't give me any water so I could wash my feet. But she has washed my feet with her tears and dried them with her hair. 45You didn't greet me with a kiss, but from the time I came in, she has not stopped kissing my feet. 46You didn't even pour olive oil on my head, [a] but she has poured expensive perfume on my feet. 47So I tell you that all her sins are forgiven, and that is why she has shown great love. But anyone who has been forgiven for only a little will show only a little love." 48Then Jesus said to the woman, "Your sins are forgiven."

Clinton started gulf coastal restoration, but it was toward the end of the second term and I believe Bush scrapped it when he took office. Or chopped it into nothing. I'll keep trying to find a link, but all that comes up is Obama heh

Obama has shown great interest.
I'm keeping fingers crossed something comes of it.

Just got back from a fine day out. I taught D_L how to use my Canon 40D, a fine SLR that is a leap over her little point and shoot. She is doing great with it. I took my 7D also, with an intent to offer some choices.

Anyone who buys a cookbook TODAY can have a large print of any of the photography on my Pages or those of Dragon_lady.

Reine, my heart breaks as well for all of the pain and tragedy your state and the other states impacted by this spill feels as well as the horrific impact it has made on the ocean itself and the creatures who make their home there and near it. You are probably closer to this than any others of us here and the insights you have posted have been very valuable to me, as all I have to go by is media. If it weren't for LGF, I don't know what I would think. I did support the moratorium, more out of fear that there may be other companies out there who aren't telling the truth about their operations as well, but have read your comments with an open mind and find that I am now sitting on the fence over the issue. As Kilgore Trout pointed out, I think that we only see the tip of the iceberg on this one, and that it will be spun in every possible direction before there is resolution, if ever there is.

Hot Air: Of course it’s a shakedown

Joe Barton (R-TX) is right: the $20 billion escrow fund is a shakedown. Not because BP isn’t liable for the oil spill, and not because BP shouldn’t help the people losing their livelihoods on the Gulf Coast. But because Obama extorting the escrow fund from BP is an exercise of executive power outside the rule of law.

I think you miss the larger point...when criticism of two people are compared I focus on the office holder, not the retiree from the last admin...I pick on all sorts of people it's true, but you are ignoring the context as usual

Want some context?

Just to show how easy it is to start one of these conspiracies...

I was bored, and trolling the "Rapture Ready" forum one evening, I had a long standing but little used account, I wasn't there to troll, just to observe.

A thread caught my eye that complained about the census, they were talking about why the census were sending out people to get the GPS coordinates of rural households.

I, quite "tongue in check" replied that that they needed updated accurate and precise locations so that the modern GPS guided artillery munitions could be accurately aimed. Really, I wasn't trying to troll, well not really, but you have to say something to go along with the group think over there every now and then just to keep from being banned.

By the next morning what I had said had morphed into how the census was getting peoples locations so that a minimal artillery crew detailed to each town in the bible belt could instantly wipe out all the "true believers."
By that afternoon WND had picked it up and it spread from there, of course by then my anonymous post on "Rapture Ready" had become "a Confidential report from a highly placed military officer."

Ok, I admit it, it was me, I started a freaking conspiracy, by effing accident, sorry. :(

re: #269 Macha

Thank you for your kind words!

The media is very confused on many things about this, most of them have no clue even that there is a big difference between drilling operations and platforms, and production operations and platforms, and that's actually pretty basic. If they don't know what they're even looking at, how can they report accurately?

There will be resolution, eventually, I just pray the impact on people's lives is minimal.

Again, thanks.

re: #384 ausador

It's not your fault. They're nuts. I would suggest not trolling there in the future, though. It's best not to feed into paranoia.

The fascist-sympathizing Shrieking Harpy is in fine form tonight, spewing out mangled metaphors like an out of control, not-so-pretty hate machine.

The jihad flotilla. It melds propaganda together with violence, usually conducted separately, to wage war. The “aid ship” is the face of this century’s warship, like lipstick on a pig.

Of course, all of this is possible because the world media is aligned with the terror force. So when the jihadists, with the help of their leftist whores, paint up their weapon-filled warships like $2 homicidal trollops and call them “aid ships,” the media laps it up like a dog returning to its vomit.

What the hell is gonna happened when these nutjobs get back in power?

We'll find out as early as next year. Even the most pessimistic projections show the GOP cutting Dem majorities in Congress down to razor-thin margins, meaning Nancy and Harry can no longer rely on twisting the arms of their party members to get bills through, they're going to have to court these nutjobs votes and seek "compromise" bills.

If the worst-case scenario happens and the Repubs take the House and come within a couple votes in the Senate? Then all we can do is hope they spend more time arguing amongst themselves than passing legislation.

Unlike most of what she says, that description actually seems accurate. The Gaza Flotilla did indeed combine propaganda with violence and most of the world media has indeed sided with the Islamists.

However, she has used this Islamist power play to push for hatred of all Muslims and to dive into the arms of fascists. Those things I cannot abide. Since she uses those descriptions to advance her hate, Pam Geller earns no points with me. Your understanding of the situation is calmer and clearer, Charles.

At least you can take vicodin, the last time I took anything that was a codeine derived drug I saw spiders and snakes crawling up the walls and had night terrors all night long. *shudder* I'm glad they work for you. Me? I'm stuck with Advil or Motrin.

Try an Nsaid like Aleve, you can take less of them for the same affect, if you have chronic or lasting pain you can ask for something like Etodolac which is just Aleve on steroids (one every twelve hours). It is as strong as you can get without going to the narcotics like vicodin or oxycontin.

That's what those drugs did to my mom.
She was dying of cancer, and even after I bitched the doctor out about his prescribing OTC extra-strength tylenol, she would not take the drugs because she wanted to visit with us. I can't imagine the pain she was in.

Yeah well, I didn't realize the connection between codeine and a pill I was given by a doctor call Hycodein until I took one. I had a solid eight hours of nastys after me instead of sleep, not my idea of a great nights rest let me tell you. I called my Mom, who was a Nurses Aid, and she told me that any drug with the letters co in the name was a derivative of codeine. Needles to say I called the doctor and bitched him out because he knew darn well I was allergic to codeine! Idiot doctor.

What amazes me is that the same wingnuts, when you ask them about energy sources, will likely scream "NUCLEAR".

They ignore that nuclear energy is 100% the result of a couple of massive government projects. First the Manhattan Project, then Atoms for Peace. And then, the government underwrites many of the big picture issues around nuclear energy, such as safety against terrorism, procurement of fuel, etc.

True, but to do that it had to tax the income of other people. Government does not create wealth, but it can sometimes use the money it taxes well to create opportunities for wealth creation.

This "government doesn't create wealth" thing, it's a slogan. It's not critical thinking. It doesn't mean anything except a signal to fellow conservatives that you're one of their flock. What is your definition of "wealth"? Is public education (and specifically K-12, gifted and Ap programs, public universities, and the very tangible advancements that public universities have made through publically funded research) wealth? Is the health of a society wealth? Are vaccinations and the elimitation of disease throguh public funding "wealth"? or is a guy's bank account the only thing that matters?

I can have a million bucks in the bank, but if there are no roads, no police, no FD, no public heath infrastructure, no EPA, no FDA, no Army, no navy, no Air Force, no Marines, no Coast Guard, and no internet, I'm not as "wealthy" as I would be with far less money and these government institutions. And America would be a weak and pointless and irrelevant shell of a country without these institutions.

Irish Ghost Story

My young love said to me,
My mother won't mind
And my father won't slight you
For your lack of kine
And she laid her hand on me
And this she did say:
It will not be long, love,
Till our wedding day"

As she stepped away from me
And she moved through the fair
And fondly I watched her
Move here and move there
And then she turned homeward
With one star awake
Like the swan in the evening
Moves over the lake

The people were saying,
No two e'er were wed
But one had a sorrow
That never was said
And I smiled as she passed me
With her goods and her gear,
And that was the last
That I saw of my dear.

Last night she came to me,
My dear love came in
So softly she came
That her feet made no din
As she laid her hand on me
And this she did say
It will not be long, love,
'Til our wedding day

I tend to go for some more obscure tracks. Night Flight is one of my favorite LZ tunes. Dark Side of the Moon has also been beaten to death. Although Animals doesn't get much play. I don't think I could find it on Itunes tho. Eventually with The Wall, PF got a little too weird for me. I didn't get it.

That's odd. I often use Aleve and it has no side effects on me.

Nsaids are based on brain chemistry, not everyone will get the same effect, although if you are getting "weird" side effects you might want to relay them to your doctor in that apparently your brain chemistry is somewhat atypical...

So RWC surmised. He has also noticed I'm stuck in the '70s and '80s when it comes to music. Sorry to say it's true, there are a few modern day artists like Pink that I like but not many.

I joke about how I was born in the wrong decade for most of the music I like (Hawkwind, Floyd, stoner rock, classic metal) but there's a ton of newer bands that are drawing from hard rock bands from the 70's as influences: Monster Magnet, Fu Manchu, Mastodon, The Sword, Wolfmother, Coheed and Cambria, The Tea Party, Anathema.. it's all out there, it's good stuff! Sometimes it takes some digging, though.

The Wall was the album that got me into - I don't know what to call it, classic rock maybe - but rock music that was not the pop music of the 80s. That made me explore older music and then get me into the blues.

As important to me The Wall was, Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here are albums I'd much rather listen to.

Irish Ghost Story

[Video]My young love said to me,
My mother won't mind
And my father won't slight you
For your lack of kine
And she laid her hand on me
And this she did say:
It will not be long, love,
Till our wedding day"

As she stepped away from me
And she moved through the fair
And fondly I watched her
Move here and move there
And then she turned homeward
With one star awake
Like the swan in the evening
Moves over the lake

The people were saying,
No two e'er were wed
But one had a sorrow
That never was said
And I smiled as she passed me
With her goods and her gear,
And that was the last
That I saw of my dear.

Last night she came to me,
My dear love came in
So softly she came
That her feet made no din
As she laid her hand on me
And this she did say
It will not be long, love,
'Til our wedding day

That was nice. Do you like Lorena McKennit?

Friday Night Blue Collar Brew Review -
Sierra Nevada Summerfest Lager

[snip]

The malt sweetness of this beer as stated on the neck label was there in force, but spicy it was not. As the sips went on the swallows became crisper and the exhales started to give me hints of floral. It didn’t exactly remind me of funeral flowers but there was something there. Now all we needed was a little umbrella… disguised as a Samurai sword. I must say that once I picked up on the floral hints, they were in every sip thereafter. Not overwhelming. But kinda… nice.

By the end of the first glass, that crispness at the swallow became more and more apparent. Now this is enjoyment! Crisp and florals. But I couldn’t get over how smooth and light this beer was, while still tasting like a full-blown brewski. I now understood why the Sierra Nevada folks gave this beer its Summerfest name. With an ABV of 5% flat, this is one of those nice, summer coolers that could be imbibed almost endlessly as long as there are replacements in the cooler.

This is not a lawnmower beer. But it could be. I could see slammin’ a coupla two-three after some laps around the yard, but the beer has more taste and more flavor than a slammer. This is a beer for a lazy summer afternoon while you watch the sun descend and the moon and mosquitoes come out. It could be a great after work unwind beer. A couple before supper will put you in the right frame of mind to enjoy the reruns on TV, if you are so inclined.

This Summerfest Lager is another bullseye in the great tasting seasonal selections for this time of year and a great brew from Sierra Nevada. Mild and flavorful, it can be a go-to-brew for quenching a thirst. For easy sipping or hard gulping, this beer will make you smile. Just make sure you have plenty on hand. Your PBR loving buddies will love this beer. Just remind them to use a bottle opener.

Government is a force multiplier for the private sector. It does all these good things, and they are necessary to an advanced economy. We must have government, and a tiny govt cannot do much of this.

That said, govt is not so good at the nuts and bolts of actual production. When the govt becomes the landlord, for example, it neglects its property. No one man can attend to 100 million housing units.

Govt can set up collective farms, but the farmers, having little stake in their crops, neglect them to some extent.

So govt has its sphere, where if the work were left to the private sphere, nobody would go into business merely to throw off positive externalities that they could not capture a return from.

re: #689 lostlakehiker

I have a friend that I met through the band I play in, a good kid, about 22, from Mexico. He came here with his parents when he was 4. He's lived pretty much his whole life in and around SW Detroit. His parents are gone now and he's been finding work as a custom motorcycle and car painter since he turned 18. Anyway, he wanted to start on the road to becoming "legal" so he could get a steady job and marry his GF. He paid a lawyer who specializes in that sort of case and the lawyer suggested they just go before the court and tell the story how he was brought here by his parents when he was a small child and has lived here his whole life and now he wants to do whatever it takes to get a green card and become a legal immigrant. What could go wrong?

Blammo. The judge orders him to get deported right then. They stick him in jail and then sent him back to a city in Mexico he's never lived in and he doesn't know a soul there. He obviously got some pretty crappy legal advice. He should have just stayed in the shadows. I hope he can make it back here someday.

3 or 4 years ago if I had told anyone here that the POTUS would take over gm and Chrysler and college loans and banks and wall street and every aspect of your health care, you would have called it worse than this.
this potus is a liar. he lied yesterday about he senate rejection of the benefits bill and we once again find out that he lied about not losing your health care.
impeaching is not fast enough as we found out when the impeached, disbarred liar from Arkansas was in the white house.
