GOP Candidate Sharron Angle Speaks at John Birch Society Event

Wingnuts • Views: 6,790

There was a time when openly associating with the cranks, racists, and conspiracy freakazoids of the John Birch Society would have spelled instant disaster for a politician’s career.

But in today’s climate of right wing extremism, the John Birch Society has not only been re-legitimized, it’s been welcomed back into the Republican fold.

This weekend the JBS held an event in Utah, and the featured speaker was none other than Nevada’s GOP nominee for the US Senate, Sharron Angle. (The link is to Google’s cache of a JBS website.)

The first Utah United Freedom Conference was held on September 18th, at the Radisson Hotel in Salt Lake City. The national sponsors of the event were The John Birch Society, Freedom 21, and the National Center for Constitutional Studies. Additionally, there were approximately 33 local sponsors including The John Birch Society, Utah Eagle Forum, Utah Farm Bureau, and the Utah Cattleman’s Association, as well as several 9/12 groups and others. The conference event was held through the day and was attended by 375 participants. …

The concluding speaker for the morning session was Steven Pratt, who has a Masters Degree in Education and did postgraduate work at the University of California at Berkley. He is working with the Center for Constitutional Studies and worked under the late W. Cleon Skousen. Mr. Pratt  spoke on “State Sovereignty, the Original Concept.”

Throughout the afternoon there were three breakout sessions featuring 13 different classes — all of which were focused on issues concerning constitutional government and individual liberties. Booths in the hall represented several of the participating organizations. The John Birch Society, for example, was present with two booths featuring books, magazines and DVDs to help inform the participants. Attendees found a wealth of additional knowledge and tools to help with their organizations.

The evenings event concluded with Speakers Rep. Carl Wimmer (“Working to pass the Nullification Act to Obama-care in the Utah State Legislature.”) and Sharron Angle, (U.S. Senate Candidate, Nevada).

More than a few participants indicated that the event gave them renewed determination and feelings of hope for America.

I don't think the blame goes to either of the Bushes. They were just leaders of a dead movement. The real problem is that conservatism hasn't evolved in a meaningful way to be useful in the modern world. That's why today's Republicans are so susceptible to secret communist conspiracies and want to undo the past 100 years of Constitutional law and social development. They are reverting to the past because the modern world doesn't have any use for their brand of conservatism.

Are you turning it in via the mail, or by hand?

If via mail, sign it in front of a notary and have it notarized, send to your Dad with an addressed, stamped envelope and ask him to sign, put it in the envelope and mail it.

The notary is supposed to WITNESS you signing it, in order to notarize it (swear that it is indeed your signature).

That is a tough one. I don't know if I'm a former, but I definately have one foot and most of the other out of the party. I keep hoping for the grown ups to return but the GOP seems intent on snaching defeat from victory this fall and in the forseeable future.

One big factor is the theocratic wing needs to back down on insisting the GOP has to be a conservative Christian party (with a very narrow definition of Christian).

Another factor is "lose the wingnuts" and vet some experienced statesmen instead of going for the cheap demagogues.

That smallpox immunization was often fatal in itself and at that time was a very new and risky procedure. The John Adams movie had a great scene about this with pus being scraped from a dead woman and pressed into a cut on the recipient being immunized. It was very gross.

And I'm serious. A lot of those phone lines have software to recognize rage-swearing and transfer the call up.

Plus, it'll make you feel good.

yes it would.
I'm just frustrated.
I've had this issue off and on (dsl drops when I get phone call, dsl runs great for a few months and then slows down to molasses) and today the guy just basically blew me off with "you need to replace the splitter/filter" bullshit when I know it is an issue with my distance from the switching station and being the "end of the line" as they say.
Periodically they will switch our "ports" at the station and then service sucks and you have to get to the local guy who will go change what has been fucked up.

right now our download is 1.4 mbps...good or bad, I don't know but I'm annoyed.

Read about it in some of the period manuscripts. Smallpox inoculations were very dangerous and also left the entire army debilitated and in quarantine for up to three weeks. The side effects were not real fun either, and skin rashes with itching were common and could be passed to other people. The procedure was done in secrecy so that the British would not know and thereby be able to launch a swift attack that the Continental Army could not defend against.

A good description of this is found in Private Yankee Doodle: Being a Narrative of Some of the Adventures, Dangers and Sufferings of a Revolutionary Soldier.

Yes, if you can't both be in the same place at the same time.

It shouldn't be difficult to find a notary; we have a grocery store nearby that has a kiosk where there's a notary people use for car sales, etc., for about $10 a document.

I'm talking Digital signatures

A valid digital signature gives a recipient reason to believe that the message was created by a known sender, and that it was not altered in transit. Digital signatures are commonly used for software distribution, financial transactions, and in other cases where it is important to detect forgery and tampering.

Digital signatures are often used to implement electronic signatures, a broader term that refers to any electronic data that carries the intent of a signature,[1] but not all electronic signatures use digital signatures.[2][3][4] In some countries, including the United States, India, and members of the European Union, electronic signatures have legal significance. However, laws concerning electronic signatures do not always make clear whether they are digital cryptographic signatures in the sense used here, leaving the legal definition, and so their importance, somewhat confused.

Digital signatures employ a type of asymmetric cryptography. For messages sent through an insecure channel, a properly implemented digital signature gives the receiver reason to believe the message was sent by the claimed sender. Digital signatures are equivalent to traditional handwritten signatures in many respects; properly implemented digital signatures are more difficult to forge than the handwritten type. Digital signature schemes in the sense used here are cryptographically based, and must be implemented properly to be effective. Digital signatures can also provide non-repudiation, meaning that the signer cannot successfully claim they did not sign a message, while also claiming their private key remains secret; further, some non-repudiation schemes offer a time stamp for the digital signature, so that even if the private key is exposed, the signature is valid nonetheless. Digitally signed messages may be anything representable as a bitstring: examples include electronic mail, contracts, or a message sent via some other cryptographic protocol.

Poor hedge fund managers:
Obama To Hedge Fund Manager Who Complains Of Being ‘Whacked’: ‘Most Folks On Main Street’ Feel Beat Up

Scaramucci told Obama, “We have felt like a piñata,” complaining that “we certainly feel like we’ve been whacked with a stick.” Obama responded that Scaramucci needs to put things into perspective:
Now, you know, I have been amused over the last couple years, this sense of somehow me beating up on Wall Street. I think most folks on Main Street feel like they got beat up on. … There’s — there’s a big chunk of the country that thinks that I have been too soft on Wall Street. That’s probably the majority, not the minority.
Obama went on to note that the top 25 hedge fund managers took home $1 billion in profits last year. “If you’re making $1 billion a year after a very bad financial crisis where 8 million people lost their jobs and small businesses can’t get loans,” Obama said, “then I think that you shouldn’t be feeling put upon,”

To former Republicans - What would it take for you to vote R again?

Here's my answer....

I'm not a former Republican but I was a Republican leaner for a while.
For me the big issue is honesty. Republicans can't seem to even have an honest debate anymore. Even if you exclude Glenn Beck and his nutty Birch Society conspiracy theories there's still a serious problem. Why is it that every time a Republican think tank like Heritage or Cato put out a report about the economy it's based on bogus math? I'm not an economist but it doesn't take much to debunk claims of "2.2 million dollars spent for every job created". These bogus claims are repeated by Republican leaders. Don't they have an honest reason for opposing the stimulus? I don't think they do or we would have seen it by now.
The same thing happened with Healthcare reform? They used the same dishonest math and bogus claims of death panels.
I'm realistic. I expect a certain amount of spin in politics but the outright lies are troubling. To me it shows that they don't have an honest alternative to offer.

Segregation is alive and well in the U.S. in so many communities. I don't understand what happened to Brown v. BoE. Even with heavily diverse communities such as we have in Miami, we still have entirely Black schools, all who have the lowest scores and a few that are being threatened to close. A baby possum has been eating the outside cat food. The babies are pretty mellow. Give me spiders, snakes, bugs, reptiles, I love them all. Show me a possum and I'm completely freaked out.

I opened the door last night and saw him at the bowl with the cat on the walk, wide eyed, watching him eat. When I opened the door, the cat got bold and decided to hiss at it. She had her mommy to protect her I guess. Little does she know that if that possum did anything to me, I'd be screaming my fool head off. Anyway, the possum took off.

I hope Kitty doesn't mess with them, they really can be mean and they have serious claws.

Depends on the dog. I had one who was dumber than bean dip, but she was the sweetest creature ever put on the earth. If the baby piggie was raised by a dog, it was imprinted and absolutely believed it was a dog.

I had a "pet" wild skunk for years. He would hang out on my back porch and beg me for treats. He loved carrots, bananas, and chicken. He never so much as threatened me with squirting on me, but then he started his visits when he was really small, so I think he was partially imprinted on me.

He was also one of the cutest animals I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. Skunks are fascinating, imo.

A Dow Theory buy signal?

Not to be left out of today’s burst of optimism on Wall Street, the venerable Dow Theory is close to issuing a buy signal.

That’s because, assuming the stock market holds onto its mid-day gains, both the Dow Jones Industrial Average /quotes/comstock/10w!i:dji/delayed (DJIA 10,754, +145.77, +1.37%) and the S&P 500 index /quotes/comstock/21z!i1:inx (SPX 1,143, +17.12, +1.52%) will close above their rally highs set on Aug. 9.

If they do, that will constitute a buy signal according to TheDowTheory.com, edited by Jack Schannep. The crucial levels to watch, on his interpretation, are 10,698.75 for the Industrials and 1,127.59 for the S&P 500.

And then getting nominated, or hired, or published.

I thought this was in the past. I'm forgetting my Faulkner.

Yanno, I've noticed this a lot in the past 10 years. The ones who have been right about most everything are ignored as the DFH contingent while the assholes who have been wrong about everything are the ones who get the press as the "serious" commentators. I will never understand this.

Well,, there's 15 minutes of my life I'll never get back

Had to explain to a customer in Europe why he was being charged so much for a service (an NFL game) we did for them on Sunday AS A LAST MINUTE EMERGENCY (their words)

For them I had to take the feed off of domestic (USA) satellite
Convert the signal from NTSC to PAL
Convert the audios from PCM to Dolby E with mixes on some pairs of channels (international sound ,, natural sound ,, announcers)
Convert the video from High Def to Standard Def

(all at their request)

A raccoon can make a several hundred dollar vet bill out of a cat. That is if your inclined to get them fixed. Which I'm not. Always more cats. And raccoons. Shoot them all, let Newt sort them out.

I've seen the cats sitting right next to the raccoons on the front porch.
They leave each other completely alone, it's amazing.

Ahh yes. That's what it all comes down to: we must prevent the scourge of tempting black phalluses from stealing away all of the white women. So much sexual insecurity and guilt, all wrapped up into a big pile of crazy.

Heh. I'm guess Slate was on the money when they talked about "status anxiety" in the Tea Party.

[Link: www.slate.com...]

I'm not surprised about the rise of this kind of rhetoric. It's common both in times of economic hardship and when previously disadvantaged groups make social gains. What I find saddenning is that it seems to be encouraged and rewarded by some in the political mainstream who should know better.

I'm not shocked. I'm not surprised. I'm not flabbergasted. I'm not appalled. I'm not any of those things. This is what the GOP has become, end of story. the Texas GOP and now the Montana GOP BOTH want homosexuality to be illegal. The next time you tell me that is a fringe position on the right, I'll show you an awesome cliff that you're already driving of off.

Why isn't the extremism this blog highlights on a daily basis getting any play in the press?

Are they stupid or just afraid to take these ideologues on?

Who owns the press? Always follow the money.

racoons and rabies:
[Link: health.state.tn.us...]

and racoons are way more destructive than tame cats. I'd see if you can find some of the oral rabies vaccine to put in food around your place. Your health department or animal control department may have some.

racoons are one of my most favorite animals to watch, though. beautiful little beasties, and interesting habits...from a distance.

re: #48 Cato the Elder

"Notarization" is meaningless. Just another legal hoop to jump through. The "profession" is medieval and should be abolished.

I disagree. The idea is to make sure that a legal document is in fact signed by the person whose supposed to be signing it. Without it, anyone could sign a document (say, a real estate settlement statement) causing holy hell, and it could take forever to set things right.

[Rod Serling voice] Imagine if you will, a husband wanting his wife out of their house. He sells the house without her knowledge, and some woman shows up at the settlement and signs as the wife. The movers for the new owners show up with the new owners' stuff. The wife is more than a little surprised. [end Rod Serling voice]

At my bank, they grumble and notarize the few things for which I need notary services, and charge me nothing.

re: #221 marjoriemoon

I'm having a hard time quoting you guys, but this is to:

Allegro, b_sharp, Satt, Varek and Fozzie :>

My vet has pics of all his patients' pets on the wall and one is this rather huge picture of a pig. He was telling me about the pig one day, when in he comes with the owner! The owner drove a Cadillac and had a little ramp built from the ground up to the car so the pig could get in and out of the vehicle. There was obviously no lifting him and his little feet couldn't get up high enough. I can't tell you how funny it was to see him waddle up and down the ramp into a Caddy!

I've seen lots of people waddling to and from their Caddies, SUVs, Lincolns, Benzes, etc. And yes, IMO they were pigs. The end of Orwell's Animal Farm often comes to mind.

Every time a contemporary politician appears at an event sponsored by or including the John Birch Society, it would be helpful if someone in the media would ask those politicians if they agree with the basic dogma of the JBS as enunciated by JBS founder Robert Welch to his National Council in January 1960--quoted below:

“From a careful and realistic study of the mountainous pile of evidence that is there for all to see, certain terrifying conclusions are objectively inescapable. Among them are:

(1) The Communists are winning their large victories, as they always have, through the cumulative effect of small gains;

(2) They make these gains chiefly through the conniving assistance of many of the very diplomats and officials who are supposed to be opposing them;

(3) Communist influences are now in almost complete working control of our government;

(4) And hence, the United States Government is today, as it has been for many years, the most important and powerful single force promoting the world-wide Communist advance.”
[A Confidential Report To Members Of The Council of The John Birch Society – minutes of 1/9/60 meeting held at Union League Club in Chicago IL, page 1-2; minutes signed by Robert Welch.]

Furthermore, according to the minutes of this meeting, Robert Welch stated:

"Today, gentlemen, I can assure you, without the slightest doubt in my own mind that the takeover at the top is, for all practical purposes, virtually complete. Whether you like it or not, or whether you believe it or not, our Federal Government is already, literally in the hands of the Communists." [Ibid, page 2]

"In our two states with the largest population, New York and California ...already the two present Governors are almost certainly actual Communists...Our Congress now contains a number of men like Adam Clayton Powell of New York and Charles Porter of Oregon, who are certainly actual Communists, and plenty more who are sympathetic to Communist purposes for either ideological or opportunistic reasons." [Ibid, page 7] [Note: the reference to Governors refers to Edmund G. Brown of California and Nelson Rockefeller of New York.]

"In the Senate, there are men like Stephen Young of Ohio, and Wayne Morse of Oregon, McNamara of Michigan, and Clifford Case of New Jersey and Hubert Humphrey of Minnesota and Estes Kefauver of Tennessee and John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts, whom it is utter folly to think of as just liberals. Every one of those men is either an actual Communist or so completely a Communist sympathizer or agent that it makes no practical difference..." [Ibid, page 8]

“Our Supreme Court, dominated by Earl Warren and Felix Frankfurter and Hugo Black, is so visibly pro-Communist that no argument is even needed…And our federal courts below that level…are in many cases just as bad.” [Ibid, page 8]

"Our State Department is loaded with Communists from top to bottom, to the extent that our roll call of Ambassadors almost sounds like a list somebody has put together to start a Communist front." ... [Ibid, page 8]

"It is estimated from many reliable sources that from 70% to 90% of the responsible personnel in the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare are Communists. Our Central Intelligence Agency under Allen Dulles is nothing more or less than an agency to promote Communism throughout the world...Almost all the other Departments are loaded with Communists and Communist sympathizers. And this generalization most specifically does include our whole Defense Department." [Ibid, page 8]
