Texas Senate Anti-Choice Debate: Tampons Confiscated, Guns Not a Problem

What about douche bags?
Wingnuts • Views: 29,305

At the Texas capitol today, where the state Senate is debating that regressive caveman anti-choice bill passed by the House a couple of days ago, state troopers are searching women and confiscating any tampons or pads they discover. Texas Republicans are scared that women will throw tampons at them. Yes, they are.

Concealed firearms? No problem!

Here’s a live feed of the sausage-fest.

[Live feed moved to newer thread…]

UPDATE at 7/12/13 1:41:06 pm

After being ridiculed by the entire world, the Texas GOP has a change of heart.

But honestly, the fact that this happened at all is a farce.

Guns in the Senate gallery? A-OK. Tampons and pads? ZOMG EVIL! The Onion is now pissed they didn’t think of this shit first.

Of course, they didn’t confiscate any used ones. That might put them in possession of a tiny wee Person.

I still can’t wrap my brain around the ridiculousness of this.

Apparently there were rumors of threats by some protesters to throw used pads and tampons during the vote/debate. You know, because women can’t control themselves or something. Ergo, they decided to ban tampons and pads at the capitol.

Morons. I weep for my state.

Deace: The Survival Of Western Civilization Hinges On The Duggars

Guest-hosting for Fischer today was Iowa-based Religious Right radio host Steve Deace who issued his own call for Americans to get busy otherwise by the year 2030, the globe is going to be overrun by some 20 million radical Islamic jihadists who would put Adolf Hitler’s Nazi army to shame.

“Who’s going to stand along-side your children and grandchildren,” Deace asked, “when those jihadists target them?”

“We’ve got to make sure our kids get married at a younger age and start living out the birds and the bees right away and often. Indeed. The reality is this whole thing called Western Civilization might hinge on the Duggars”

Mr. Deace is forgetting that Islam does allow for polygamy - provided you can afford it, of course.

So if one Mrs. Duggar can have nineteen kids, think of what four Mrs. Dr Lizardo’s can do.

Advantage: Dr. Lizardo.

Please note; I’m not advocating polygamy. One woman is quite enough for me, thank you very much.

Again and again with these assholes, I’m reminded of a story I heard about Khrushchev. After Stalin died and Kruschev consolidated power, his adversaries expected him to have them killed, because it’s what they’d have done in his place.

Khrushchev told them, “You measure others by your own yardstick.”

I think it’s the same with the Teapublicans. They expect Dems, women, blacks, latinos, gays etc. to do what they would do in the same place. This is probably why they’re scared shitless of becoming an ethnic minority in the US - because they expect to be treated the way they’ve treated others.

Same thing when people start wondering about how much time is spent deliberating. As if too short (and who defines that) means a verdict one way versus another, and that a longer deliberation means stalemate, though that depends on the number of charges and complexity of the case. Jars of urine, feces confiscated at TX capitol as abortion bill voting takes place

AUSTIN, TEXAS (DPS) - The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) today received information that individuals planned to use a variety of items or props to disrupt legislative proceedings at the Texas Capitol.

Therefore for safety purposes, DPS recommended to the State Preservation Board that all bags be inspected prior to allowing individuals to enter the Senate gallery, which the State Preservation Board authorized.

During these inspections, DPS officers have thus far discovered one jar suspected to contain urine, 18 jars suspected to contain feces, and three bottles suspected to contain paint. All of these items - as well as significant quantities of feminine hygiene products, glitter and confetti possessed by individuals - were required to be discarded; otherwise those individuals were denied entry into the gallery.

In the interest of the safety and security of Texas legislators and the general public, these inspections will continue until the conclusion of Senate business.

It’s something for the lawyers, but some kind of conspiracy to commit assault seems possible.

Texas Tribune update:

DPS officials confiscated one jar they suspected had urine and 18 jars they suspected had feces while searching bags of people entering the gallery, the department confirmed in a press release Friday afternoon.

Rumors had persisted earlier Friday that some protesters had tried to bring such containers into the gallery, but DPS officers outside the gallery said they had no knowledge of such attempts at the time.

The DPS issued a press release on what they’ve found so far:

AUSTIN - The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) today received information that individuals planned to use a variety of items or props to disrupt legislative proceedings at the Texas Capitol.

Sounds perfectly reasonable to me. Twenty weeks is more than half-way home. I recall seeing my son at 20 weeks and it was pretty awesome, especially because my wife and I had 4 girls in a row. No way could you convince me that this was not a child. But who am I. I only vote.

Such a law is pointless. There are presently very few abortions after 20 weeks, and those that do occur are nearly all in response to medical issues that any humane law would provide exceptions for. Furthermore, such exceptions are degrading —- how close to death does one have to be before a mother’s life ‘exception’ kicks in?

And, by the way, the targeted regulation of abortion providers is a steaming crock of bullshit a mile wide and a mile deep.

Nobody wants to convince you your son was not a child.

Likewise, nobody wants you to try to convince a woman that if a 20 week old fetus is dead, or is going to kill her, she should be forced to continue the pregnancy anyway.

The 20 week thing is a smokescreen. As others have said, very few abortions happen post 20 weeks, and those that do are primarily for serious medical issues. The goal is political theater and incrementalism.

Let me be frank - if my wife were in such a situation, where she was >20 weeks pregnant and continuing the pregnancy would threaten her life or health, I’d approve the abortion in a second.

Which is why any decision about a pregnancy should be between the woman and her doctor. Even the husband or boyfriend must take at face value what a doctor or the woman says about an event that really only involves her body, not his.

Women can’t force men to have a vasectomy or tell them what to do about their sexual function; likewise, men should have no say-so in how a woman handles hers. You would expect there would be a discussion between 2 people who love each other and share a life, but in the end, it is the woman’s choice should rise above her mate’s, and his above hers concerning his body.

It always seems vitally important to them to prevent/prohibit things that almost never happen, even at the expense of the freedom of millions of Americans. For example, a Wingnut friend asked me, if I believed in marriage equality, how could I justify a law that would prohibit an adult son from marrying his father. Yes.

In addition, the biggest factor pushing abortions into the 20+ week range when it’s not a medical emergency is obstruction of access to abortion clinics. Many working women can’t afford in time or money the four doctor’s visits that the laws in some areas mandate, in any sort of timely fashion.

IMO, its just a pack of lies. E.g., the opposition to marriage equality is driven by animus against gays and lesbians. The farcical thought experiments are just a cloud of dust they kick up to try to hide where they are really coming from, which is always some combination of a personal ‘ick’ factor and religion-soaked bigotry.

re: #183 EPR-radar

My last child was a very difficult pregnancy. He was a big baby, I’m not that large of a person. 12 lbs, 4oz. at birth C-section. Large incision, bed rest in the last trimester(torn uterine ligament), etc. Lots going on, lots could have gone wrong. Long recovery.

My Ob/Gyn had been in practice at that time(almost 20 yrs ago)for over 30 yrs. We talked a lot during that time because at one point I had to go in twice a week for monitoring. He was part of a large practice affiliated with several hospitals and clinics in the area. He told me that he had NEVER, in all his time of practicing saw one abortion at the 20 week mark or later. In the entire practice there had been one, when the baby died just before the start of the last trimester. That’s all. There were 10 doctors in that group.

The 20 weeks BS is about making this a horror show, to get people to think of embryos as fully formed babies. The vast majority of abortions occur in the 8-12 week range, an EMBRYO, not a fetus, not a baby. An embryo doesn’t really look distinctly human, the fetus does more so. This is a shitty psychological game they’re playing, a fucked up marketing ploy. Nothing more.

North Carolina Governor: Moral Monday Protesters Are Not Very Moral

“I go out in the crowd all of the time,” McCrory told the newspaper on Wednesday. “Frankly, yesterday I went out and talked to several of them and they were not very respectful. They did not represent the majority of those who call themselves moral by cussing me out. But that’s the way things go some times.”

They used naughty words, therefore their arguments are invalid.

What are you talking about? I’m not disputing your numbers. I’m saying that 11,000 late-term abortions, compared to one million total abortions, means that late-term abortions are 1.1% of all abortions. Most of them are due to extreme medical necessity, and those that aren’t are generally because the woman couldn’t get access to an abortion clinic due to restrictions and mandates to have multiple doctor visits, etc.

Do you understand?

re: #183 EPR-radar

IMO, its just a pack of lies. E.g., the opposition to marriage equality is driven by animus against gays and lesbians. The farcical thought experiments are just a cloud of dust they kick up to try to hide where they are really coming from, which is always some combination of a personal ‘ick’ factor and religion-soaked bigotry.

Late term abortion bans are a political device to get people used to laws that deny women their autonomy.

It remains true that if men could get pregnant, Abortion would be a Sacrament.

Oh, no doubt. But they do seem to spend an awful lot of time obsessing on the mechanics of gay sex, and on the most outlandish scenarios.

Yes I know, bleh Slate, but it’s an informative article from a doctor in pediatrics if you haven’t read it already:

slate.com

Why do some women wait so long? The answer is that comprehensive fetal testing, such as anatomical sonograms and ultrasounds of the heart, are typically performed just before 20 weeks of gestation. Such scans are critical for uncovering major birth defects, such as anencephaly (severe brain malformations), major heart defects, missing organs and limbs, and other severe birth defects.

It leaves my argument that around ONE PERCENT of abortions occur at the 20 week mark. That’s where it leaves it. It’s not a common thing, it’s rare. In fact, the report you site says that some of those later term abortions could be or might be avoided with more adequate access to proper facilities sooner in the pregnancy. Making it more difficult to get to the proper clinic and having to jump through more hoops than ANY man has to do for ANY MEDICAL procedure is the problem here. You want fewer abortions? Lobby for proper sex education, for more available and affordable birth control, keep fairy tales and religious nonsense out of classrooms and teach the biology. Lobby to keep clinics open and encourage those clinics to hold classes for younger and yes, even some older adults who don’t understand simple human biologic processes. Keep the slut shaming and fear mongering out of sexual health and education and you’d see a dramatic drop in abortions, I’d bet actual money on that.

Anyone who thinks that women casually get ANY abortion, let alone one at the 20 week mark, because of some imagined “inconvenience” or consider it no more than a manicure is a fool at best.

Do you understand that in this scenario we know that the child will die shortly after birth? And why are you talking about ‘justice’? What does that have to do with this? We’re not talking about justice, about punishment.

My answer to is no abortion ever under any circumstance. It is my opinion that abortion is intrinsically evil and completely void of any good.

And this comes from a belief in the supernatural, correct? That even before an embryo has anything approaching a human brain, it has a ‘soul’— something you can’t in any way prove to me, but which you assert you know through revealed truth? Right?

Nobody who is ‘deeply concerned’ about 20+ week abortions has that as their only concern. Such late term abortions are about 1% of the total.

No anti-choicer is going to be content with only a 1% ban.

naw…if it was his wife, he’d just bid a fond adieu and welcome the new replacement (and much younger model) wife…just like in the Puritan days.

The sad actuality is that there are people who are honestly, so to speak, against abortion, who have been brought up to believe it is a terrible sin and truly believe it, who watch their wives die from complications in pregnancy, wanting to do something but stopped by their religious conviction. Likewise, devout women, truly believing they would be offending god if they aborted their embryo, die in dangerous pregnancies. It’s not as simple as “believe abortion is a sin and lose all empathy”. If that were true, it wouldn’t be a problem, the numbers of people opposed to abortion would be so small. But the sad, tragic, very human truth is that there are people who are deeply devout enough to believe in some things that are in practically cruel, without those people being unempathetic or unfeeling or callous.

It’s important to remember that they’ve been influenced so heavily by culture. This sort of stuff isn’t natural.

indeed

i would add that many people think that the need for abortions would be radically less if we lived in a society that did everything it could to see that all families have everything they need to raise happy, healthy children

abortions mostly happen because people find themselves in tough spots. making them against the law doesn’t change that - changing society so that there are fewer of these tough spots would be a much more effective way of lowing the number of abortions

we have so many children already alive that need our help

Okay. Explain the rationale that says that an embryo that has nothing approaching a function brain is a ‘baby’, then. Why are you opposed to abortion before anyone could possibly call the embryo sentient?

See, it’s rather common for people opposed to abortion on religious grounds to pretend that they are not actually religious, but they run into the problem that there are no absolutist anti-abortion arguments that are not religiously sourced.

In Obdi’s scenario, the child would live for a few days in intense pain, but Stash thinks it would be evil to deprive that child of that suffering, and similarly it would be evil to deprive the incestuously raped teenager of the 9 months of suffering, followed by the pain of giving birth to a baby that will die in agony within days, leaving that teenager with huge emotional scars, and a significantly greater chance of permanent injury and death.

This is not the response of someone with reverence for life. This is the response of a fetus fetishist.

Engaging with trolls can be useful on two fronts: one, presenting the counterargument is important, because many people may not have actually seen it before. You’ve got to remember that in many parts of the US, children are taught in school stuff that would be considered trolling if presented here.

The second is similar, but it’s demonstration of the troll-ishness, which helps people spot them later, likewise, if they’ve never run across the typical patterns of behavior.

A. Let them both die.
B. Abort the fetus to save the mother.

Precisely. I’d personally prefer there to be as few abortions as possible and that fight as with many things needs to be in prevention. Birth control availability, lots of it. Research to make existing BC more effective. Sex education, lots of it, and NOT Abstinence Only. Abstinence Only is like handing a teen a Driver Training manual in which a single sentence is printed: stay at home! And then giving them the keys. Makes me mad as cats that there are people who don’t think that approach is completely ludicrous.

Take cats, for example. Most kids like petting cats or playing with them, but I was always the kid who was sort of off by himself, taking cats apart, familiarizing himself with their bone and tissue fibers, and really learning how each piece of the cat connected to the next.

I recommend against that use of language, actually.

The term ‘Pro-choice’ should be reserved for the position that laws should basically allow abortion.

Similarly, the term ‘Pro-life’ should be reserved for the position that laws should basically ban abortion.

‘Pro-choice in public but pro-life in private’ gives the legislative pro-life extremists political cover they do not deserve.

Taiwan: Sanitary pad scheme ‘to help women conceive’

Apparently, Taiwanese “tradition” dictates that pregnant women can “share their luck” - increasing another’s chances of bearing children - by passing on unused towels or tampons. And the capital’s civil affairs department hopes the scheme will boost its birth-rate, reports the Taipei Times. “We hope that Taipei residents who want to get pregnant will be blessed by the lucky pads and that their wishes will come true,” it quotes department commissioner Huang Lu Ching-ju as saying.

Indeed. I have silently prayed in front of many abortions mills as well as a prison before an execution here in the Prairie State.

Central to your premise is the belief that a 1st trimester fetus is a “human” capable of pain, feelings and humanity. It’s a belief that betrays a complete ignorance of basic prenatal biology, as well as the assumption that your ascertaition of knowledge overrides the desperate needs of women who find themselves in the undesirable position of seeking an abortion, too often with no support from the male contributor to the situation.

A) Abort to save the life of the mother.

B) Do nothing and watch both die, well before week 36.

Choosing (A) here is the act of a moral idiot.

Much is being made of the report that some baby was being adopted with Down’s Syndrome, ignoring that there are hundreds - thousands of babies that need adoption or are put into foster care without anyone clamoring for those children.

It’s the same kind of twitterati response to the girl who needed a lung transplant and the demands that the existing procedures be ignored to grant an exemption to this girl ignoring that it would put someone else at a disadvantage.

Turns out that this girl ended up with significant complications - needing a second lung transplant just days after the first. That meant that at least two people who might have gotten the transplant were denied so that this girl got hers first. Logic and reasoning out the window when they ignore that the fact that there’s a shortage of organs for transplant because of a lack of donors. Change that and you can eliminate the need for waiting lists. That gets ignored and the issue de jour fades as the twitterati go on to the next outrageous outrage.

So…we have different points of view.

Your point of view is that abortions should never happen. I say, “Great, you should never get one then.”

My point of view is that it’s each woman’s choice whether or not she feels an abortion is appropriate to her situation. Your response to this is, “No, I should be allowed to tell women what to do with their bodies, even if it means they might die as a result.”

I don’t really think it’s hateful to say that I think your belief that you should be able to enforce your point of view on my body - which is mine to make decisions about, btw, just like you can’t be forced to donate blood or an organ - is fucked up. YMMV of course.

They tabled an amendment MANDATING yearly inspections of the remaining abortion clinics to ensure compliance.

Well duh, once they’re all closed they don’t need any inspections to assume compliance.

I came in to the house from work at six and wondered why She Who Must be Obeyed was laughing and weeping at her twitter feed of the current craziness in the Texas Senate (nb: These are the *smart* ones).

“They were letting handguns into the chambers, but not feminine hygiene products!”, she gasped.

Thinking quickly, I said “Whaa?”

“Kirk Watson finally got them to quit just now!”

Now Kirk is my State Senator. Used to be my mayor. He’s a pompous little popinjay, sometimes, but his heart is in the right place. I’ve taken a leak next to Kirk Watson. I’ve had beer and BBQ with Kirk Watson. But I had SWMBO immediately tweet the Kirkster (I don’t tweet. I’m a Luddite.) as soon as I understood the sheer idiocy of what was transpiring and tell him that he should have kept his fucking piehole shut and continued to let the world know at just what level of DERP that this state operates.

Two minutes later, he calls me on the phone (I give him money) and says “You don’t think the world knows this? I just wanted to bust their balls and make ‘em roll in the shitstorm.”

We both laughed. I told him to get some rest when this is over and enjoy his family.

Good times!

Would it EVER occur to these fucking news channels to actually talk to the spokesperson for the Texas State Police and ask them what they confiscated, and if it can be confirmed that it was the pro-choice side that did it? And, wouldn’t that be considered a public health violation involving a ticket or possible arrest, or at least questioning?

That would require committing an act of journalism, which is probably illegal in TX.

Even if journalism remains legal, it is much easier to obligingly quote RWNJ talking points than it is to investigate anything.

My answer no abortion ever, under any circumstance. It is my opinion that abortion is intrinsically evil and completely void of any good.

You are a perfect example of my definition of an ideologue: A person who cares not at all about being good but entirely about being right.

From my point of view the only difference between you and other fanatics such as the Bolsheviks or the Taliban are aesthetic.

being told by an anti-abortion activist how many abortions there had been since roe vs wade, i asked how many abortions there had been before roe vs wade

they hadn’t thought to consider that

I read something awhile ago that I don’t have the google-fu to find again… some researcher went to the vital stats records and found that before and after Roe v Wade, birth rates changed only marginally. Nowhere near a million a year.

The mortality rate of women of reproductive age, especially of unspecified infections or hemorrhages… that went down drastically.

He ended up concluding that the abortion rates before and after legalization were about the same. Just much safer after.

I remain unclear if it is someone at the station called with the names and the intern said “Oh yeah, those are right” or the the station called with the correct names and the intern said “Oh no, the names were xxxx.”

Either way this is a giant mess and I think an intern is very much not ever getting a recommendation for that.

“no recommendation” isn’t enough.

The intern’s name needs to be released in a story about the incident, forever to be googleable and bingable to any future potential employers.
