Amazon FireTV brings up the topic of “over the top” networks.
That is, the move among the consumers in the US and other nations away from broadcast TV and pre-packaged cable programming.
Broadcast TV in the US served as a kind of uniter - by having large segments of the population all sitting and viewing the same content at the same time gave a sort of identity, a shared experience (even if rather non-corporeal.)
American society could get on the same page, so to speak, by all watching Walter Cronkite on any given night.
Today - we are all going our own way. It’s a challenge for advertisers of course, but I wonder how this is contributing to the fragmentation of our society?

Long ago, Alvin Toffler wrote about something like this in Future Shock: a proliferation of niche publications at the expense of general coverage publications. I’m not sure if he envisioned the Internet and the cable TV industry.

I’m waiting for the cable companies to actually let you subscribe without a TV, but direct to your computer / mobile device. I know that some of the channels (HBO for example) you can access via the computer, but you have to have a subscription through Cable first….

re: #3 RealityBasedSteve
There is a move to “over the top” form of entertainment. Comcast is in talks supposedly to explore an over-the-top delivery system, which would in a sense compete with their own NBC/U cable network packages. WWE now has an over-the-top network that may already have a million subscribers. Netflix and Hulu were pioneers, but production-company specific networks (like WWE) may become the standard in a few years. In the UK one can view BBC shows at will through their iPlayer.
Meanwhile, Cox keeps upping the price of my internet service. Now over $60/mo for the second from the top service level. It’s basically the same price as their cable service standard networks package. Cox only cares about getting a minimum of $60/mo per household. I expect that Cox will continue to up the price a dollar or so every 6 months, as more of their customers stop buying the cable network packages. Supposedly last year was the first year that in the US cable network household coverage declined. Younger people want internet and on-demand programming.

Verizon already allows you to watch a portion of their channels live through mobile devices and computers. And TV networks are following the Hulu model of making episodes available to watch the next day on their websites.

This continues to be a fantastic dish, so I have to share the recipe with the Lizards. Apologies on the measurements, this is how I cook.
Avocado slaw:
one ripe avocado (you’re going for well-mashed, here)
two spoons sour cream (I use low-fat/no fat)
lime juice (ummm. more than a little. less than a quarter cup.)
SALT (I am not a low sodium cook)
cumin
paprika
cole slaw mix
Mash the avocado. Mix in sour cream. Add salt and lime juice to taste, adding a little cumin and paprika. I go for a nice salty-lime tang.
Mix in cole slaw.
Serve.
I could eat a whole bowl of this.

California’s senator Yee indicted on gun, corruption charges
A prominent Democratic California state senator and gun-control advocate was indicted by a San Francisco grand jury on charges of corruption and conspiracy to traffic in firearms, according to court documents released on Friday.
The indictment adds to the troubles facing state Senator Leland Yee, who was arrested last week and criminally charged along with two dozen others in the same case. He has since been suspended with pay.
Yee, 65, is the third California state senator to face criminal charges this year in separate cases that have cost Democrats a cherished two-thirds legislative majority in an election year and prompted them to cancel a major fundraiser planned for this weekend.

My theory is that by the time you’re broiling you’ve already surrendered and something’s gone terribly wrong with your life, especially if you’re using an electric oven. The only time it’s really acceptable is if you’re on vacation in a strange hotel, there’s no grill available, the kitchenette is the hotel shitty kind and you forgot to pack the blowtorch.

What are you broiling? There’s a technique for the blowtorch plus a low temperature oven that works great on frozen steaks, you sear the outside and then get perfect rare interior. I bought a Snowpeak Gigapower torch for camping because fuck coming back in the evening to a bunch of soaking wet firewood. It’s been really useful in the kitchen tho too.

In general, nothing. I shy away from recipes that call for the technique because I’m so skeptical of it.
I was going through magazines to pull out the recipes I wanted to try before recycling the rest, and encountered a bunch that required broiling.

For a lot of recipes you can often substitute a cast iron skillet preheated on the range, put in a little oil and use the smoke temp to tell you when to go to town. Tuna works really well this way because most people like the interior raw.
Pro tip: Bacon presses work on more than just bacon.

I dunno, there is one thing that I do broil and that’s for a plate of peppered bacon wrapped water chestnuts simply because if you put them on the grill and you puncture the foil you’re in danger of a mess that is reminiscent of those deep fryer turkey videos on your grill and these days bacon is getting to be expensive.

The legislation would create a new class of offense called a “regulatory offense” for Illinoisans caught with 30 grams of marijuana or less. Once a ticketed individual pays their fine, the offense would be erased from their record in a move the Marijuana Policy Project argues would help them avoid losing employment, educational or housing opportunities.

Well, let’s get back to that whole gaystapo thing.
It appears that Eich didn’t get canned merely for being a wealthy bigot, there was already troubling winds blowing through. Members of the board wanted new blood with strong ties to the mobile market and Eich wasn’t that direction.
The Prop 8 donation was a giant bucket of gas on that small fire. I’m not sure Eich would be gone absent the board’s desire for somebody with mobile app industry ties.

No. They were an additional reason. There is rarely one total reason for something happening.
Also, that’s a misuse of ‘stalking horse’.

105 | Fairly Sure I'm Still Obdicut Apr 5, 2014 6:59:29am |
It’s kind of like Dr. House. When you try to fire Dr. House, Cutty and the other board members will say “We may fucking hate him and his assholish ways, but he’s really the best at what he does.”
In this case, the guy didn’t have the expertise in the mobile area, staff protested against him being appointed, and he’d damage their ability to attract new hires. That he lacked the expertise in mobile means nobody could say “He really is the best guy if you overlook this other stuff”.

I saw that… but the ELT transponders aren’t the only things that use that freq, but here’s hoping it’s them.
One thing I hadn’t thought of, the Cockpit Voice only records the last 2 hours of data, so if it’s them, they wouldn’t have the timespan when the aircraft first changed course and the missing “x” number of hours before it ended there. (if it’s the plane). Don’t know about the Fight Data Recorders, how long they track. Edit: Apparently FDRs track the last 17-25 hours of information, overwriting when full

Owner’s anti-gay views cause furor over soon-to-open Sellwood grocery store
“They’re choosing to open a business in a very open-minded neighborhood,” said Tom Brown, owner of Brown Properties and president of the Sellwood Moreland Business Alliance. “I think their personal views are going to hurt.”
…
Recently, neighbors found Facebook postings by owner Chauncy Childs that brought them up short. She wrote a long post about her opposition to same-sex marriage, complaining that “a tiny minority is dictating a change of our social structure.” She also posted an article, written by someone else, supporting the right of businesses to refuse to serve gay people. One neighbor posted a seven-minute video on YouTube about the issue, including snippets of Childs’ posts on Facebook, documents that show she is the owner and other information that shows she tried to change her Facebook name.
In a telephone interview with The Oregonian, Childs said she never thought her Facebook views would become public and that they don’t have anything to do with the store she’s trying to open.
“We aren’t discriminating,” Childs said. “We have no anti-gay or anti-racial bias or anything like that. We have members of our family who are homosexual.”
…
“We’re not going to refuse to serve anybody,” she said. “But we believe a private business should have the right to live their conscience.”She said she believes that gay marriage is wrong because it is the start of a slippery slope that could eventually lead to pedophilia and bigamy. But she said those are her private religious beliefs and don’t reflect how the store will operate.

Note the weasel words by the owner. They’re not going to refuse service to anyone, but they think gay marriage is wrong and a slippery slope. They’re also pulling out the “Some of my best friends are gay!” defense as an excuse for why they won’t kick anyone out of their store who wants to spend money. But is anyone dumb enough to think that won’t affect their hiring or staffing practices?
They’re happy to take money from LGBT people and let them into their store, but what guarantee is there that they won’t discriminate in other ways?

Far right mayors may insist on pork in school cafeterias
Most French public schools offer an option with no pork for Muslim and Jewish students who follow their religions’ dietary restrictions.
“We will not except any religious requirements when it comes to school cafeteria menus,” Le Pen declared on French radio network RTL, in response to a question about the measures the National Front would implement in the cities they won in last week’s municipal elections. “There is absolutely no reason for religion to enter into the public sphere; that’s the law.”

The media hasn’t really done a good job explaining what PTSD is, Obdi. There are better sources of information about PTSD available to ordinary people, and I read some of them in the course of my previous employment at Marcus Evans in order to better understand the events I was selling seats to. But most people aren’t motivated to seek out better sources of information and so they are left with flawed media reporting.

The fig-leaf embrace of Jews by people like the BNP is a very recent phenomenon, and as Dark rightly points out, its so they can get their anti-Muslim on. That ‘support’ is about a micrometer thick and only applies to Jews who fully agree with them.

Article on NPR that talks about cost of living in Washington. Remembering that they need to maintain at least two places to live and If you consider the extra obligations (social and work) of being a Congressman, it makes a case that someone who is not independently wealthy might have a difficult time living on that salary.

It’s not entirely stupid, but the problem isn’t “We pay the Congresspeople too much”, it’s really “Lobbyists make a fucking fortune because of the trash that our laws are regarding lobbying and campaign finance”.
Without fixing that, the government will not be able to pay enough to outbid the lobbyists.

Congressman Steve King has some kind words for immigrants who want to join the US armed services:
“As soon as they raise their hand and say, ‘I’m unlawfully present in the United States,’ we’re not going take your oath into the military, but we’re going to take your deposition and we have a bus for you to Tijuana,” he told Breitbart News. “That’s the law.”

So, today was a good day. A really good day.
I was heading downstairs to grab the elevator, and the workmen were finishing up the apartment where the previous resident had passed away. The guy in charge recognized me - “Ah, the American from upstairs” and then said to me, “Hey I got something here if you want it. I don’t want to have to haul it, it’s too heavy”.
And lo and behold: An almost brand-new washing machine. A Candy Aqua 80F model, made in Italy, a front-loader. So, we hauled it upstairs, and I’m using it right now. Works great.
And best of all: I got a 275 Euro washing machine for nothing. That’s always good.
I reckon I should set myself up as the Fred G. Sanford of Ostrava. All I need now is a son so I can say “You big dummy!” and a sister-in-law I can compare to Godzilla.

Will that really matter in an age of Citizens United and McCutcheon? We’re at the point where SCOTUS has legalized bribery and called it speech. The only things left are to repeal all of the voting rights Amendments in the Constitution and getting rid of the Voting Rights Act altogether.

And due to the magic of the Google… here it is for all to enjoy… It’s actually a pretty nice looking machine for a washer… darn Italians making Maytag look like a Ford Escort compared to a Maserati Quattroporte.

Well, that’s what I meant by ‘fixing it’, is rolling back that sort of stuff.
Also, i’ve never had a dishwasher, much less a laundry machine. If I ever do, it’s going to be a major life adjustment.

As Tom Peterson of Portland, OR fame once put it in his adverts, “Free is a very good price!” and I wholeheartedly agree. Thanks for the manual, and its good to know where to get parts if needed. Bookmarked.

I dunno…I hope I’m not driving when I’m 91. Esp at night. I think after people pass a certain age, they should be tested every single year, along with having to list what medications they take. You get some old codger out there who doesn’t want his or her “freedom” taken away but are taking oxycontin or some other heavy pain killer on top of other medications and you don’t want to be near them, much less encounter them on the hwy. Plus, alcohol is still a factor sometimes. This was a horrible accident.
2 killed, Greyhound bus damaged in wrong-way crash on I-75
I found out how good my reflexes were today when I had to stop after a bale of pine needles fell off the back of a pickup truck, although it appeared the guy behind me almost hit me. Stupid idiot in the truck didn’t have anything tied down and the bales were stacked 2 high. He didn’t even stop. The rest of us had to drive around it because it was in the middle of the lane.

Quick observation on Broiling vs Grilling - when you grill, the rendered fat falls onto whatever you’re using to heat, and often catches fire. This may or may not bother you, but depending on how fatty your meat is, the soot deposition can be severe.
When you broil, the fat goes AWAY from the heat, so you don’t get flareups.
An electric broiler can put out a ferocious amount of dry heat, which is why restaurants have salamanders, which are really just very hot electric broilers.

Dad turns 90 in 10 days
Last week, he went to the Massachusetts DMV for his license renewal
Simple eye test ((((look into the machine ,,,, look right ,, what color do you see,,, look left ,, what color do you see now)))
“Okay sir,,, you passed ,, here’s your 5 YEAR renewal”

re: #177 sattv4u2
That stated,, it’s absolutely an individual thing
I know 40 year olds who shouldn’t be on the road
OTOH,, I know octogenarians who are very good drivers
OTOH, those “tests” at the DMV are very cursory. My aunt, in her 60s, had cataract surgery after which the dr told her to go back to the DMV (she had failed the eye exam) and get her license. All she needed was the note from him that said she had 20/40 vision in both eyes.
She told me, I just don’t see that well anymore. I’m just not going to put myself and others in danger if I can’t see any better than this. And she never drove again.
I think it’s important for people to acknowledge their limitations. I can’t see as well at night as I used to, and I limit my night driving very severely. I wouldn’t take a trip at night, nor would I go where I wasn’t familiar with traffic patterns, either. I don’t mind going into the morass of Charlotte, but only during the daytime—never at night, even though I know it very well.
