Perhaps the reason this comes as such a shock is because most wingnuts are too young or too old to remember Nixon normalizing relations with China. Most of them grew up either shortly before or after the end of the Cold War and thus assume that that’s the only way to bring democracy to a nation, to utterly defeat it and then move right on in.

That policy always bothered me. I mean I feel if you’re going to have that policy for one group of people, you should have it for all those escaping despotic regimes.it actually seems though that the younger generation of Cuban Americans favored doing this but it was the older types or the types that are young but act like old men like Rubio and Cruz that had a problem with this.

tbo.com As part of resuming diplomatic relations with Cuba, the U.S. will soon reopen an embassy in the capital of Havana and carry out high-level exchanges and visits between the governments. The U.S. is also easing travel bans to Cuba, including for family visits, official U.S. government business and educational activities. Tourist travel remains banned.Licensed American travelers to Cuba will now be able to return to the U.S. with $400 in Cuban goods, including tobacco and alcohol products worth less than $100 combined. This means the long-standing ban on importing Cuban cigars is over, although there are still limits.
The U.S. is also increasing the amount of money Americans can send to Cubans from $500 to $2,000 every three months. Early in his presidency, Obama allowed unlimited family visits by Cuban-Americans and removed a $1,200 annual cap on remittances. Kerry is also launching a review of Cuba’s designation as a state sponsor of terror.

They’d be fine with the Castros if they were anti-communist. Right wing anti-communism has never been based out of opposition to communist regimes not respecting human rights, it’s because those communist regimes aren’t anti communist. Lest we forget that Margaret Thatcher gushed over Pinochet so much that she wanted the UK to give him exile in his dying years and we had no problem with Francisco Franco following WWII either.

It’s just amazing really the kind of shit that happened. I think a lot of whites are under the wrong impression that Jim Crow was just suppressed voting rights and segregation (bad enough) but the reality is the system was a system where a white man could murder a black man and not only get away with it but get hero status. A black man meanwhile could commit the pettiest of crimes and find himself on even death row. I recall reading about one case where a black man stole 5 dollars or so worth of goods and was sentenced to death.

Nope. It wont. It hasn’t until now, and there’s no reason to think the embargo will change anything next year or 10 years from now.
We’ve managed to normalize relations with Vietnam and Laos and Cambodia. We have normal relations (ambassadors, embassies, etc.) with rivals like China and Russia, each of which have human rights abuses as bad or worse than anything Cuba ever did.
We have normalized relations with Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and any number of other countries with horrendous human rights records. Yet, Cuba is the only one with which we don’t have an embassy or ambassador. Why is that?
It boils down to Castro. He “won”, which is to say that an autocrat managed to survive for decades. And it’s not like we haven’t dealt with autocrats before too - like Mubarak, Saudis, etc.

They announced the location for 3 casinos to begin operating.
#NYS just announced 3 casinos can proceed with applications - nothing for Southern Tier. The 3 are in Tyre, Schenectady, and Kiamesha Lake.— lawhawk (@lawhawk) December 17, 2014
Kiamesha Lake is home to the former Concord hotel and resort. The others are in Schenectady, which is in the Capital District near Albany, and in Tyre, which is near Rochester in the Finger Lakes area. Nothing for the Western/Southern Tier.
Of the 3, the one that has the best chance of success is at the Concord site IMO primarily because of proximity to NYC. There’s still value with the name too.

Perhaps it was different before they repealed the draft, but not now.
Nah. My Dad, my Grandpa and I all had to sign up for the draft. I’m pretty sure only my Grandpa got any firearms training from the Government. And he signed up for the Navy in WWII rather than take the chance on getting drafted into the Army. My Dad got lucky in the late 60s and didn’t get called up for Vietnam (I think his birthday got 365). I had to sign up right before 9/11, and I spent a couple years being thankful that Vietnam had made actually implementing a draft political suicide.
There might have been a higher percentage of people who went through basic training, but there would still have been plenty of yahoos.

Has everyone already seen this:
One man charged the terrorist. Tori Johnson was 34. He managed the Lindt Chocolate Café for two years. Employees and customers all said he was a good man, a kind man. He was also a gay man.
Johnson tried to take the gun to protect the other hostages as they fled, but he was shot in the attempt. His attack distracted the terrorist. The others escaped and the sound of the gunshot brought in the police, who killed the armed man. Another hostage also died on the scene, but of a heart attack on the way to hospital after being shot.
Tori Johnson never went home that day, he died in hospital. He never again got to tell his partner of 14 years, Thomas Zinn, that he loved him, or that he wanted him to pick up his socks or any of the things one says to another who is the love of their life, with whom they share heart and home.
Tori’s partner Thomas, and his family, issued a statement: “We are so proud of our beautiful boy Tori, gone from this earth but forever in our memories as the most amazing life partner, son and brother we could ever wish for.”

The meltdown continues apace. The RWNJs have already linked the new Cuban policy to Islam, Mexico, and Satan. Now they are just working out the details.
One freeper puts his finger on why Cuba is different from China, Russia, Saudi Arabia and other less than benign regimes with whom we have diplomatic relations:
Cuba is merely 90 miles away, thus making that barbaric country an existential threat.(emphasis added)
It’s all those Hezbollah missiles no doubt.
There is some dissent in freeperland, including some from cigar aficianados, and this hard-nosed type, who may not in fact be wrong:
There is one other reason I see this as a smart move.
If we want to effect regime change in Cuba, we need an American embassy in Havana staffed with CIA officers. The only way we can find out definitively what is going on is to have those officers recruit agents inside the Cuban government, as the CIA does in governments all over the world. It’s how we can get our tentacles into Cuba.
Tentacles? Oh my! Buwahaahaa!

More big news out of NY today (besides prohibiting fracking statewide).
They announced the location for 3 casinos to begin operating.
Southern Tier already has a couple. Salamanca, and one near Elmira at a racetrack.

It’s a relief to see that the billions we’ve spent on homeland security have ensured that terrorists aren’t able to push us around here in the continental US. Seems a waste of money when you consider that we could be frightened by our own shadows for free.
As a people we have gotten terribly soft and fearful.

The “near Elmira” one is Tioga Downs - not a full-fledged casino with table games but rather a “racino” with slots and video poker. We have a couple of those flanking Rochester at Finger Lakes Racetrack and Batavia Downs, too.

It sets my spidey sense to tingling. Charles gets into it on Twitter with that Perter Duke photographer guy who appears to be an UpChuck fanboy, then all of a sudden some other photographer comes out of the blue publicly alleging copyright infringement, but failing to provide any details? What a coincidence. //

What is within the creator’s legal rights has nothing to do with the mindset. The rights were never in question. One may choose to exercise one’s legal rights or not. Pamela Geller has legal rights to say whatever she writes on her blog - what kind of mindset leads to her writing what she does is an entirely separate question.

You should have the note in her stocking tell her to look someplace else, where she’ll find another note with another clue.
Sample first note: “Go to the silverware drawer”
Sample second note: “You are my matching spoon. Here’s a loving hug. Now go look in bathroom.”
Sample third note (taped to the toothpaste): “You found a kiss! Now head to ___”

The “free ad” thing ruffles a lot of feathers, for good reason. Creatives hear the value of exposure argument all the time, and it’s become a kind of industry shorthand for “you’re little people so we don’t need to pay you real money.” Over time this gets incredibly frustrating and annoying, and creative types have developed all kinds of ways of pushing back.

Also, at some point, someone else is making money off of the artist’s work without compensating the artist. Here not so much, but when a company takes an artist’s work and slaps it on t-shirts that they then sell - would you say the artist should just take that as free advertising? I think not.
An argument could be made that because there is advertising on the page, there was money being made. A lot? No. I’d be surprised if we are talking more than pennies. But the principle is the same.

The difference is that Geller makes a lot of claims about her motivations—human rights advocacy, patriotism, etc.—very few of which ring true when compared to her actions. In fact, her right to bigoted free speech is one of the few things she doesn’t misrepresent.
The photographer, OTOH, doesn’t appear to be claiming anything other than her legal rights to her intellectual property.

We both agree that what Geller may be saying about herself is not very enlightening, and in any case it is not a part of my point. The point is about the motivations. The existence of rights themselves does not necessarily result in specific motivations. There are the so-called 2nd amendment rights, but if I know that a person is stockpiling weapons, I’m no more wise for knowing that they have that right - I want to know why they are stockpiling. If a person abuses free speech, like Geller does, I want to know why they’re doing that. If a person does something with their copyright that doesn’t make sense to me - I want to know why they’re doing it, and not merely that they’re entitled to it by law (I already know it). On the latter issue I have gotten a couple of satisfactory answers, including the one from you about “no specs work”. Moving on ;)

It may be the most sensible, but that doesn’t mean it’s a sure thing, or even likely. Look at China. It’s best not to raise hopes that may well not be realized. Better to just point out that the current policy of recognizing communist China & Vietnam but not Cuba just doesn’t make any sense.

Also, this map goes well to prove this line from Cruz:
“Fidel and Raul Castro have just received both international legitimacy and a badly-needed economic lifeline from President Obama,” he continued. “But they remain in control of a totalitarian police state modeled on their old state sponsor, the Soviet Union.”
So much bunk. Cuba under the Castros has had legitimacy and support from the international community for awhile now. So the GOP’s position is just utterly ridiculous.

Back when I lived in Miami, radio stations were bombed for being insufficiently anti-Castro. I hope the Secret Service is more alert for right wing nutjobs after this.
In the mid 1970s, Radio WQBA announcer Emilio Milián’s legs were blown off by a car bomb outside the station. It was generally believed that members of Alpha 66 were involved. No one was ever charged for the bombing.
Milián survived and continued to speak out against tactics of hard core anti- Castro exile Cuban groups.

A Cuban-American friend tells me most of the “classics” have had a lot of the mechanicals replaced with bits from Soviet-era cars, Ladas and such. They might not be so great as all that….
IIRC the US Coast Guard diminished the number of surviving Cuban classic American cars by sinking a 1953 Chevrolet truck and a 1958 Buick as hazards to navigation.

Yeah Iran-Contra. Funny how when they accuse Obama of coddling terrorists, they never mention that pathetic adventure. But I guess that’s because they could care less about the real fuck ups of the Reagan administration as opposed to their active fantasies where Obama laughs evily with the Iranians about how his secret plan to destroy the US from the inside by giving more Americans affordable health care. It’s downright dastardly I tell ya. Blofeld would find ti too evil.
Iran-Contra was what finally took the shine off of the Cuban Exile Anti-Castro CIA asset get-out-of-jail-free-card.
