I just took a run around the right wing blogs and they’re all gushing about Donald Trump’s insanely xenophobic reality-challenged immigration statement. It’s a grotesque celebration of pure meanness, horrible people exulting about the potential deportation of millions of families.

At times like this when the entire right wing world is baying for the blood of “illegals,” I need music more than ever.

More people die on the road than they do in the ocean, maybe we should mull over culling cars instead of sharks
(or just lock them up in parks where we can go and view them).
There’s a bypass over Holbrook now, paid for with burgers no doubt, I’ve lost count of all the cows.
There’ll be no salad sandwiches. The law of averages says we’ll stop in the next town where petrol price is down (what do I know anyhow?)

That’s why I am reluctant to call them actual conservatives. Take the policy about birthright citizenship they want to throw out. This is a policy that has existed since the 1860’s. And they want to throw it because of their own bigotry. Nevermind that it does work and it makes these children of immigrants assimilate and feel more American. Par reference but more than half my great uncles on my mom’s side whom were all children of immigrants served in our armed forces during WWII and my grandfather who was the youngest of them was in Korea.

Doubt Coulter knows that. Doubt she also knows that it didn’t really end absolute monarchy in England either. Sure John’s grandson Edward I (bad guy from Braveheart btw) established a parliament, Parliament really didn’t play a big role with English monarchs until I would say after the English Civil War and maybe even after Charles II/James II. The English Bill of Rights is a more influential document on us than Magna Carta is. Of course, you can easily argue that w/o Magna Carta there is no EBoR.

I was actually surprised to find out that Edward I was the first English king to speak English as his first language. Put things in perspective. He became King about 160 years after William the Conqueror invaded England. It would be as if all our presidents from Washington through Truman spoke French instead of English.

Well we were talking about English speaking so it’s possible that Eddie II spoke it fluently like his dad but unlike his son didn’t speak it as his primary language. Which gets me thinking about another reason why the movie Braveheart is bs- the way they portray Edward II. I mean the movie is still entertaining I concede but it’s foolish to use it as your source material for one’s opinions and observations of the Scottish Wars of Independence of the 13th and 14th century.

Sure John’s grandson Edward I (bad guy from Braveheart btw) established a parliament, Parliament really didn’t play a big role with English monarchs until I would say after the English Civil War and maybe even after Charles II/James II. The English Bill of Rights is a more influential document on us than Magna Carta is. Of course, you can easily argue that w/o Magna Carta there is no EBoR.

Edward and his men were brutal in their revenge, killing de Monfort’s Welsh infantrymen even when, like Joab, they clung to the High Altar of Evesham Abby. To make an example of Simon de Montfort, his head was cut off from his body and his genitals shoved into his former mouth, the head was sent to Lady de Mortimer impaled on a lance. The rescued King Henry had Simon’s arms and legs spiked to the gates of nearby towns as a warning against all who would challenge the monarchy.

I’ve always thought Edward III was the first King to speak English as his first language. I think Edward I was the first to really speak it fluently. Henry II is said to have understood English fairly well, but couldn’t really speak it.

I had just always seen Edward III quoted as the first true English-speaking King. I don’t know about Edward II, but I would think with his favoring of French courtiers over natives, he probably didn’t use English much.

Edward II then lost the battle of Bannockburn to Robert the Bruce in 1314.

After the example Edward I had made of his enemies at Evesham, the nobles who felt Edward II ineffective decided trying to control him was a bad idea so they killed him instead. As Richard Brooks, author of a recent Osprey book on the 2nd Baronial War put it, “English politics became more cruel after Evesham.”

It’s not even a new business model. Intra-company competition was popular some years ago and damaged a lot of companies. (Who was it that thought it was a great idea to have the different departments in Sears stores compete with each other?)
My husband worked for a company that did that sort of thing back in the early 90’s. It was a small company and they managed to go out of business within a few years.

The problem with the Gibson historical epics is there’s good guys and there’s bad guys. Now I get from an entertainment perspective why people are drawn to that but I like nuance. I haven’t watched season 2 yet of TURN Washington’s Spies but i thought it did a good job of showing the conflict many felt during the era about staying with the British or joining hte revolutionaries.

My first thought after reading Shakespeare’s Richard II that Shakespeare had made it as a parellel to the real life problems Elizabeth I had with her cousin Mary Queen of Scots. I don’t know why given I’m an avowed opponent of all monarchy but I always felt bad for Mary. Never liked Elizabeth or her father that much or the Tudors as a whole. Of course the Stuarts weren’t much better. So I’d probably side with my incredibly distant kinswoman, Grace O’Malley if I had been around back then.

It is hard to make a historical epic I concede. You can’t get every detail 100% right and there’s always going to be the need for dramatic license in some places. I really thought the best Civil War movie I have seen was Glory. Not too long. I did enjoy Gettysburg, the adaption of Michael Shaara’s The Killer Angels but it’s far too long for me.

Never easy, but Evesham changed the game. Lord Edward and his lords merciless killing of the baronial leadership was a major departure from the normal policy of sparing important nobles for ransom or as hostages. Thereafter, the stakes of rebellion were heightened, for failure now meant death instead of exile.

But a benefit of this was that strife within England diminished after the end of the 2nd Baronial War in 1267. Brutal as Edward had been, his victory secured power for the dynasty of which he was part for the rest of his father’s life and after that for the rest of his own. Edward’s cruelty to his enemies ended up producing an internal peace that lasted for decades, though much of that was due to his father’s quiet acceptance of many of the local baronial reforms, Edward’s own later reforms as king, and the fact that unlike his father and son Edward I was able to win his wars.

I still haven’t gotten into that show. I have been thinking of that era a little since my grandmother was coming of age in the 20’s.(Family tree work gets me filled with thoughts about that kind of stuff) Granted it was Pittsburgh and not England and IIRC Downton Abbey is about the wealthy while my grandmother was from a working class background.

I thought the article sounded over-blown myself, though some of the business practices described sound like Jeff Bezos’ whole modus operandi in re: ruthless competitiveness. He didn’t become the world’s fifth wealthiest man by being nice. And I sort of took issue with the article in its focus on the corporate culture when the blue-collar workers of Amazon are the ones who are most likely getting boned, mentioning once of a 100 degree distribution center notwithstanding.

What piqued my curiosity was the NYT comparing Amazon to other tech companies when it comes to employee benefits. Netflix announced paid maternity leave recently, Amazon has no paid maternity leave. There were a couple of other examples though I forget them, I read the article this morning.

Note that unless Netflix has changed in the last few years (which is perfectly possible) the parental leave policy is window dressing on a mediocre employer. They have been known to fire people for getting old and a friend’s kid applied for a job with the understanding that she would be having surgery (on her own insurance, not theirs) in a few weeks and would need 3 weeks or so off for this. They hired her, trained her, and promptly fired her when she told them she was going to have her surgery.

I’m sure many people like working for Netflix, and Amazon as well. It doesn’t mean that it is an optimum work environment.

Interestingly, and telling against the argument that Edward II was primarily homosexual is the fact that he father 5 children, and one (Adam Fitzroy) was not by his wife. As a note, readers of the Wikipedia article I linked to should understand that the amount of money Edward gave his son Adam to equip him for the 1322 campaign in Scotland ( 13£, 22d) was not a massive sum for weapons and armor, but it was pretty substantial and would have paid for the mail hauberk, padded gambeson jacket, plates, and sword a nobleman’s son needed on campaign in those times.

Umphrey’s McGee started a stream service last year. $10/month or $100/year and you can stream every show they’ve played since 2004. I haven’t taken the plunge, I like curating my own Umphrey’s McGee concert library, which are all shows I’ve been to, or good friends (or, in a couple of cases, members of the band) highly recommend I have. Even me, a guy who’s been legally - and illegally on occasion, I’m only human - collecting MP3, FLAC, WAV files for 15 years, owner of hundreds of CDs and hundreds of vinyl albums, all lovingly organized by me, I’m having a hard time conceptualizing something like Apple Music or UMLive. It just seems too easy.

He wouldn’t have been: His horses would have been provided for him. Arms and armor had to be bought before the start of the campaign because the mail armor and the padded jacket beneath had to fit. And I say horses plural because Adam Fitzroy would likely have been allocated four horses:

A destrier: A large war horse mostly ridden in its training and in battle.

A palfrey: A smaller but good quality horse that would have been the horse Adam normally rode.

and 2 rounceys: Lesser quality horses, one of which would have carried Fitzroy’s armor and another for the page who would have cleaned the armor and helped Fitzroy put it on and take it off.

I’d like to argue that Trump is EXACTLY the kind of nominee that the GOP needs right now. He’s the darling of the Tea Party, and granted there’s already whispers that he’s the stealth candidate from the lies of Clinton but they’re being swatted aside, like any semblance of rationality in the policies that Trump is advocating, big ideas, lacking in specifics and based in wingnut tropes straight out of failing civics papers from the 7th grade. If Trump carries on to win the nomination, we can only hope that he can be defeated soundly so that those that have been championing his (and their own) cause can finally waken to the actual morning in America moment where, churches are still standing, you can still worship as you desire and if you choose to be an asshat, you can still be one.

Maybe then, we can get past the racists, the religious fundamentalists and the ammosexuals that have the GOP in it’s thrall and have a discussion about things like dealing with climate change, income inequality, proper policing of the population and immigration. I can only hope that if Trump succeeds and then fails that these histrionic scared people can finally wonder why their undergarments are wet and go change them and perhaps, grow the fuck up.

One of the older versions had a tool that would convert mp4s to mp3s (which work in my car) Somewhere along the line that dropped out of iTunes. Well they did use level bombers in the attack on Midway’s facilities, and I didn’t really get the impression that they treated Halsey like the hero. They didn’t really devote much screen time to him. If I had to guess, the hero according to the movie would have been Nimitz. As far as Spruance is concerned, he needed more than his fair share of luck to go his way. The dive bomber strike that destroyed the Japanese carriers would have had to be recalled if they hadn’t found that destroyer racing to rejoin the fleet. The accidental timing of the strikes also gave the dive bombers the chance to attack unmolested by fighters.
The things that went right about that battle were largely due to Admiral Nimitz.

EDIT: I guess the point was the movie’s historical relevance. I think they did a good job, given that most of the available film is from later in the war. I didn’t see too much film of Hellcats and Helldivers (though there is some).

This includes:

Santorum, Cruz, Rubio, and Jindal.

This smacks of racism and xenophobia, not law. The law is quite clear on birthright citizenship, and all four meet this qualification, even if the birthers think otherwise.

Moreover, these same asshats don’t seem to have a problem with Donald Trump’s unconstitutional proposal to end birthright citizenship even though it’s enshrined in the Constitution’s 14th Amendment, Clause 1 (same provision as the one these asshats claim the four candidates somehow aren’t citizens eligible to be president).

All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside. No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

What part of All persons born or naturalized in the US are citizens do they not get? All 4 were born in the US. That makes them citizens.

But it is rather comical watching the birthers coming home to roost within the GOP - where it started on the right wing as an attack against Obama.

It’s the thin veneer of legalisms covering up for a whole boatload of racism and xenophobia coming home to roost. And there’s already far too much racism and xenophobia in the GOP to ignore.

6 of the 17 candidates are within a MOE of not even running - they’re running 3.8 points or less.

Another handful are just outside the typical MOE - Fiorina and Paul. That’s 8 of 17.

Of the balance, you’ve got Trump who’s separated from the pack by being even more extreme than everyone else. And that’s got everyone else playing catchup on being extreme.

Still, this is months before the first primary, and I really wonder just what all this polling will mean for the first batch of primaries/caucuses because I don’t get the sense that Trump has much of an actual ground game/GOTV, which is key in primaries/caucuses.

Candidates who have been down this road before know what’s involved, so they would be able to focus on it - if they’ve still got the money and resources to do it. I don’t think Carson is in that category either. Jeb, Walker, Cruz, Rubio, and even Huckabee and Paul have done elections before, but who knows what their burn rates are at the moment, and we’ve already seen Perry basically terminate his run because of lack of funds.

There’s also telecommuting, and as companies realize that those tunnels are in dire shape, more may consider that as an option for qualified workers (if they want to retain/hire them).

It can be awful, or rather easy, depending on where you live, and what mass transit is available. Subways are pretty convenient and mostly reliable. But if you’re away from those subways, the buses can be an option. Parts of Brooklyn can be only a few minutes to Midtown, while others can take an hour or longer. From Staten Island to Midtown Manhattan, it can be an hour or longer on a good day.

The commute to Lower Manhattan from Northern NJ is about an hour, depending on where you are.

Yeah, I’ve played out the commuting scenarios a couple different ways. Part of the problem is the jobs I’ve been looking at just give a generic “Manhattan” description. They could be anywhere from Morningside Heights down to the Financial District. Figuring an additional half hour Subway ride as well.

Another issue is that given where I am, and the rates that are being offered, it would take me one working day just to pay off my transportation costs.

So, reading around yesterday and this morning a bit I’ve noticed the talk about how long Trump is in the running/how soon will he quit is almost dead now and is being replaced by how can anyone else take on Trump and can they stop him from being the GOP nomination.

Hello! We gots a big Trump problem. And from here it will be driven by the media sucking off of the big news Trump is for reals and they will help carry on this madness.

I’ve also heard some people saying the biggest problem in the GOP is too many damn candidates diluting the love that a real loved GOP politician would be getting that would make them competitive to The Donald by comparison. The thinking is if the GOP could boot out 10 to 12 of them and get it down to say Bush, Rubio, Kasich and Christie their poll numbers would shoot up and be better than Trumps.

My take…the GOP better figure a way to make the clown car smaller faster than the media gets to making Trump more and more legit.

And I suspect there is even some concern on the part of the Dems to make Trump a lesser candidate because all the Trump love may bring some independents or fringe Dems to Trump due to all the buzz. He does after all have a very recognizable name. We all know that sometimes that is all it takes to get a vote.

It can be a nightmare. I probably wouldn”t have moved here at all if I hadn’t had an in to my grandparents’ rent-stabilized apartment.

And the Kurds too. Even though the territory overrun by ISIL is what he’s calling a caliphate, it includes areas the Kurds consider Kurdistan and were semi autonomous. Still all part of Iraq.

Interesting too that Dim Jim opposed Russian invasion of Crimea and Ukrainian territory (attacking Obama as weak for letting that happen).

He didn’t consider Russian claims to be valid but when ISIL makes claim of “caliphate” that somehow trumps the geographical and territorial integrity of sovereign nation like Iraq so that we can steal Iraqi natural resources.

That’s like someone laying claim to say a portion of Canada (say Nova Scotia) as their own, and then demanding that the US goes in to take it to take their natural resources, ignoring that Canada was the sovereign nation whose rights were violated and that Canada remains entitled to that territory and its natural resources.

Quick thought on watching that is I suspect that, as a rule of thumb, that extroverts are dog people and introverts are cat people. Dogs are gregarious and so well suited to extroverts. Cats tend to be loners and so better suited for introverts.

More study is required though.

That is what I meant about the media being a big part of driving this whole GOP race by how much love they slather on TRUMP®. He says something, everyone reports it, the numbers and mentions go up and the rest of the now sad clowns figure ways they can TRUMP UP their own run with Trumpisms.

If the media decided to run rough over Trump this could all change. But that is not going to happen because I think Trump even scares them because they know he will bite back and trash them.

I never thought Trump could gain this much control. But when you look back on his career as seen through some of these documentaries, you see that is how he has worked all along. Trump hasn’t changed his business practices, he is just applying them to a new business.
