When The Oh Hellos piled out of a van at NPR, someone remarked that it was like a clown car: Band members just kept coming, including brother and sister Tyler and Maggie Heath and their mom. They were all road-weary, trading sniffles, coughs and more. But the nine-piece group brought anthemic joy to the Tiny Desk in the form of buoyant songs whose underpinnings could still be dark and lonely.

Some of the music here is from The Oh Hellos’ recent second album, Dear Wormwood, which was inspired in part by the writings of C.S. Lewis; it’s about a protagonist who doubts a relationship before finding the resolve to never look back. Still, for all the deep sentiment, the band brings the same jubilant energy it brought to its performance at the Newport Folk Festival in July — even now that summer fun has given way to winter germs. Fortunately, the only contagion you’ll encounter here is joy.

Dear Wormwood is available now.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Trump is kicking himself now for not faking a “come to Jesus” conversion around five or 10 years ago.

If he could claim during this election cycle that he’s a born-again, and get into all that fundamentalist crap, he’d have already locked up the nomination.

Color me unsurprised.

Smith & Wesson triples profits in three months to October
bbc.com

Third quarter earnings were $14.2 million, almost three times more than 3Q 2014.

And we wonder why?

Following the latest shooting in the US that saw at least 14 people killed after gunmen attacked a community centre in San Bernardino, US President Barack Obama said the country must make it harder for potential attackers to obtain guns.

Demands for tougher legislation, however, are constantly met with much anger from pro-gun civil libertarians. Analysts say the argument is complicated.

“The [number one] driver of firearms sales is fear,” Brian Ruttenbur, an analyst at BB&T Capital Markets, told Bloomberg.

“Primarily, fear of registration restrictions, banning and things like that,” he said.

Slowly but surely, the machine will bow to the hate-industry:

Some big GOP players say Trump has a point

While many in the GOP are fiercely condemning Donald Trump for his proposal to temporarily ban all Muslims from entering the U.S., a whole lot of other Republicans are saying, hey, he has a point.

From established party figures such as Ted Cruz and Rick Santorum to more hard-core right-wing personalities such as Ann Coulter, numerous Republicans are either stopping short of condemning Trump’s audacious proposal or are outright applauding the billionaire businessman as finally offering a common-sense solution to terrorism threats.

[…]

Of course they are. Trump felt the pulse of the Teabonics crowd, and knows that playing on their fears and hatred is a winning business.

Just wow! An actual Trump spokesperson said that.

“No one’s talking about allowing insurgents,” Cupp countered. “You’re talking about not allowing regular Muslims.”

“Yes, from Arab nations,” Pierson replied. “You know what? So what? They’re Muslim!

I posed my Twitter reaction to this segment earlier:

This brand of television has become unwatchable to me. People here have been ragging on the news that the Mark Halperin/John Heilemann “With All Due Respect” show will be seen on MSNBC next year. I have issues with Halperin, but they do a show with long form interviews where people of diverse politics get to explain themselves without immediately allowing equal time for an opposing viewpoint. It is a far cry from the garbage Tapper pats himself on the back for regularly.

I confess that I shy away from folk music because it’s often so emotional that it upsets me. I get moved and I think of sad things and I have to take this kind of music in small doses.

This is different, though. I feel immediately compelled to hop on iTunes and buy their albums. They are great. Clean, deep, not over-produced, and very genuine. Refreshing and Satisfying, like some kind of hipster-ish folksy cola. :D

Earlier I was listening to Front Line Assembly and Wumpscut, now I’m looking back at my most recent album buys and I’ve got Midnight Oil, First Aid Kit, Marina and The Diamonds, and Florence and The Machine. I listen to dark techno stuff all day at work but maybe I’m more folksy than I want to admit.

Certainly not at all surprised the other top tier candidates haven’t gone much further than “disagreeing” with Trump. It is easy for Lindsay Graham to blow a gasket because he literally has nothing to lose. It is sad that nobody with a better chance of being nominated than Graham has gone half as far to condemn Trump’s “modest proposal”.

The Obama administration’s newly installed ambassador Glyn T. Davies is being investigated for criticizing Thailand’s strict lese majeste laws at a Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Thailand (FCCT) event last month.

The BBC’s Southeast Asia correspondent Jonathan Head confirmed Wednesday on Twitter that the FCCT has been asked to cooperate with authorities’ investigation into Davies’ comments.

Just nine weeks into his Bangkok posting, the U.S. ambassador told the sell-out FCCT event: “We’re also concerned by the lengthy and unprecedented prison sentences handed down by Thai military courts against civilians for violating the lese majeste law.”

Democracy is pretty fragile in many places in the world.

Thailand was once a place I’d consider living in, but the current military junta has ruined that idea — maybe for good. It’s a lovely country with wonderful people, but the current government is trying to become a military dictatorship. The king is frail and will die within a few years, and his eldest son is a playboy with no apparent interest in ruling. Lese majeste means no one is free to discuss publicly the king’s health or the succession dilemma, for fear of imprisonment — or worse. The junta has also boosted the political indoctrination in the schools, preparing for the future, I suppose.

Thailand has militia problems in the north (maoists, mostly) and in the south (Islamists, mostly), and there have been rumors of ISIS targeting Russians recently. So, the political picture is not very rosy.

Rubio went after him I thought: “I disagree with Donald Trump’s latest proposal. His habit of making offensive and outlandish statements will not bring Americans together”.

So did Kasich: “The plan is just more of the ‘outrageous divisiveness that characterizes his every breath.”

But it was Paul Ryan who really smacked Trump, calling his idea: “Not what this party stands for and more importantly it’s not what this country stands for.”

And know folks here don’t like Dick Cheney, but you’ll like his reply to Trump: “I think this whole notion that we can just say no more Muslims, and just ban a whole religion goes against everything we stand for and believe in.”

Minnesota, Wisconsin diverge as Twin Cities outpace northern peers

One of the biggest differences between the economies of Wisconsin and Minnesota is the thriving Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area, which drives Minnesota’s economy, a new study from Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance says.

The report, titled “Two State Economies, One Rare Metro,” compares Wisconsin and Minnesota in various categories including job growth and the mix of industries in each state.

The two economies, once similar, have been diverging for a long time, said Dale Knapp, research director for the nonpartisan Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance, based in Madison.

I give full credit to Cheney & Ryan. Neither had to do such a thing, but there they were.

Rubio get a failing grade from me. Exactly as I said, he mostly just “disagrees”. I am waiting for someone with a legitimate chance to win the nomination denounce this disgusting business the way Graham, Cheney and Ryan did. Rubio also seems a bit hazy on the whole freedom of religion thing himself.

While I have to admit Kasich was ready to compare Trump to Hitler even before I was, he has no legitimate chance to be nominated.

You can applaud the GOP condemnation of Trump all night long, but until a LEGITIMATE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE takes the same tone with Trump that Paul Ryan did (full condemnation without a hint of “but Obama…” about it), I will not be in the least bit impressed. Maybe one of them will grow up by the debate next week, but I am not holding my breath.

People trying to immigrate to the US don’t have 1st Amendment protections till they actually come here. It does not violate the Constitution to tell a non-resident alien “We don’t like your religion, so you can’t live here.” But it is deeply offensive to American ideals, and it would cruel and wrong to put such a plan into practice.

Please understand that I’m not trying to give myself an ‘out’ to support Donald Trump. I will not vote for Trump for president, period. But I do not know how a ban on allowed entry into the US by Muslims who are not citizen or permanent residents would violate the Constitution.

Those are all fairly tepid responses to abject fascism in my opinion. The fact is that GOP politics requires those candidates to tiptoe around the issue rather than confronting it and naming it head on, which is ironic considering how eager they all are to condemn Obama for not blaming “Islam” per se for ISIS inspired jihadist terrorism.

Well, true, but Trump has also proposed seizing property of Muslim families and shutting down mosques. Now he says we should just bar Muslims from entering the country. His next step down the path would be to ship everyone already here out. he hasn’t said it, but there are plenty of his supporters who have.

As for the religion angle, it would make for an interesting SCOTUS case if an immigrant with family in the States filed a civil rights suit if he/she were barred from entering because of religion.

I’m hoping the GOP backlash gains in strength, because Trump has tapped into the ugly side of conservatism. It’s well past time for the GOP to hand him his walking papers, and just accept the probability they will lose in this next election cycle. The GOP needs to think of the future of the USA if it doesn’t nip Trump’s neo-fascism in the bud.

You can tell what these folks really believe by how they respond to questions and publicity. As you and others have put, the reason Graham and Kasich can go after Trump so strongly is that they know they will really not be the nominee and thus they really don’t need the Teabonic vote. These are career politicians just making their resumes longer by “running for President”. Maybe they think they can be picked as VP or a cabinet position. I’m pretty certain that Graham would love to be SoS or SoD. Kasich would take any cabinet job but probably wants Treasury.

That Cruz and even Rubio are bowing before Teabonic ugliness shows that they know they really need to get these folk as part of their ground force.

Meanwhile, Carson makes videos about how his hands have the power to heal.

How so? Excluding one religion does not in-and-of-itself establish another.

You’re reading the term establishment as if it’s only a verb. It’s also a noun. It doesn’t simply keep the government from establishing a religion, it keeps it from discriminating in any way between religions.

The “establishment of religion” clause of the First Amendment means at least this: Neither a state nor the federal government can set up a church. Neither can pass laws which aid one religion, aid all religions, or prefer one religion over another. Neither can force nor influence a person to go to or to remain away from church against his will or force him to profess a belief or disbelief in any religion. No person can be punished for entertaining or professing religious beliefs or disbeliefs, for church attendance or non-attendance. No tax in any amount, large or small, can be levied to support any religious activities or institutions, whatever they may be called, or whatever form they may adopt to teach or practice religion. Neither a state nor the Federal Government can, openly or secretly, participate in the affairs of any religious organizations or groups and vice versa. In the words of Jefferson, the clause against establishment of religion by law was intended to erect “a wall of separation between church and State.”

-Everson v Board of Education, 1947

It is frankly shocking that you don’t know this.

You’re reading the term establishment as if it’s only a verb. It’s also a noun. It doesn’t simply keep the government from establishing a religion, it keeps it from discriminating in any way between religions.

It is frankly shocking that you don’t know this.

Frank, I’d forgotten about that case you cited till just now. It’s not often cited and most people have never read what you cited.

Kind of obvious, really (and I wouldn’t expect anything truly enlightening from the Daily Caller.) Jeb! and his foie gras feasting friends are unlikely to ever really identify with the teabonic crowd who feel the “strength” (according the Daily Caller) of Trump.

YES.

Because the term “an establishment of religion” already implies that the definition of establishment being discussed is not singular, as would be the case if all that was being barred was the creation of one official State religion. Had the drafters of the Constitution written “the establishment of religion” then a less broad interpretation might at least have been plausible.

Groundbreaking penis transplant will give wounded veterans ‘a sense of self’

The challenge is.. um… finding donors. Basically one needs to find a freshly deceased male, not too old, who can be compatible (as far as the immune system), not diseased or having a damaged penis, and whose relatives will give permission to cut off a body part (assuming the body wasn’t donated to science in the first place.)

It might in the end actually be easier to grow a new penis from tricked stem cells.

This means Santa Claus isn’t going to be delivering presents this year, since Putin is going to demand Santa accept Russian sovereignty over the North Pole. Because Trump has sucked all the air out of the room, we’ve missed other great feats of teh stoopid being done by various candidates.

For example, Ted Cruz and his embarassment of a “hearing” about climate change:

Ted Cruz derides climate change at hearing

Sen. Ted Cruz leaned on one of his favorite arguments Tuesday, building an entire Senate subcommittee hearing on climate change around the notion that satellite data proves that Earth’s temperatures have flat-lined over the last 18 years.

“There has been no significant global warming in the past 18 years,” he said. “Global warming alarmists don’t like these data. They are inconvenient truths, as Al Gore might say. But facts and evidence matters.”

But when faced with a large scrum of reporters after the hearing, Cruz talked past questions pointing out that 1998 — his baseline for arguing Earth’s warming has paused — was at the time the hottest year ever recorded. And that, give or take a few tiny variations, nearly every year since has been as hot or hotter.

[…]

But Cruz opened the hearing by declaring that, as the son of two mathematicians, he was determined to see scientific integrity defended in the face of what he says is a near-total conspiracy of reporters, scientists and Democrats to silence any who dare question the orthodoxy.

“It’s like the Inquisition,” he said, arguing that advocates of policies to fight global warming have borrowed the “language of the Roman inquisitors” by all but branding scientists like the panelists he had invited to testify as “heretics.”

Three of the four panelists were scientists with well-known views that the global consensus over climate change is based on fear and groupthink. A fourth invited by Cruz was Mark Steyn, a Canadian activist and author who bills himself as “the one-man global content provider.”

[…]

Cruz claimed victory after the hearing. He said his witnesses had produced uncontroverted evidence that what most people think they know about climate change is wrong. He said Democrats and the news media mislead the public in order to grant the federal government control of vast portions of the economy.

[…]

Cruz is a deceiving conspiratorial loon. And that has nothing to do with Donald Trump.

I do not even see the need for a discussion about whether a ban on Muslim immigration constitutes a violation of the Second Amendment.

We need a discussion on why Trump is unqualified for the office he is campaigning for.

And a discussion of why so many people are so fed up with American politics that they support an unqualified candidate just because he can market himself as an “outsider”.

Question: does LGF have an “Are You KIDDING Me?!?!” page category?

Independent: Trump Calls for Banning the Internet

Donald Trump has called for the internet to be turned off so that children can no longer use it.

The presidential hopeful said that “We’ve got to maybe do something with the internet,” because it was being used to radicalise people. He said that he would “see Bill Gates” so that he could look into “closing it up”.

…Children in America are “watching the internet and they want to be masterminds”, Trump said in a speech.

“We’re losing a lot of people because of the internet,” Trump said. “We have to see Bill Gates and a lot of different people that really understand what’s happening.

“We have to talk to them about, maybe in certain areas, closing that internet up in some ways. Somebody will say, ‘Oh freedom of speech, freedom of speech.’ These are foolish people.”

Someone really should tell Trump it’s Al Gore he needs to be talking to instead of Gates…

I suspect that they outnumber the Berniebros who would rather not vote at all than vote for HIllary.

That falls into the “be careful what you wish for” category. Our system breaks badly when there are more than two viable candidates. See 1860 or 1912 for examples. Add into it the “faithless elector” problem which could really bite us if we had a real three way split and I get very nervous about the November 2016 election.

Yes, 1860 comes to haunt me. Imagine an election that gives the Democrats an electoral majority but no clear popular vote mandate and no majority at all across broad swathes of the country. That could result in a large share of the population simply not recognizing the winner as a legally elected President.

It’s interesting that folks most closely associated with the last GOP president are the ones who are loudest in denouncing Trump (other than the President’s brother, who seems to be far less capable than otherwise appeared). I can’t quite put my finger on why that is.

Oh wait. I do.

They have experience in dealing with terrorism on a massive scale, managing expectations, and dealing with Islamophobia - knowing that it’s a fool’s errand to declare war on more than 1.5 billion Muslims worldwide. Trying to separate terrorists from the community they live in. Trying to make inroads to keep new terrorists from forming.

Say what you want about how they dealt with Afghanistan and Iraq after 9/11, but keeping the Islamophobes at bay is a high water mark for the GWB administration. They played that right - and the Obama Administration has been no different in that regard.

Person of year doesn’t mean doing good things. It just means most notable. Merkel fits that bill having run the gauntlet in dealing with everything from the refugee crisis to the economic collapse in Greece and keeping the EU together while pushing an environmental agenda too.

The guy that runs it has literally disappeared for over a week. Him and his car if I’m correctly informed. Last seen entering his local bank and leaving with a bag. Of course that looks like a big cash withdrawal. And sometimes cash speaks volumes in our biz, even for rather large buys. These days it’s hard to vanish.

I know this guy, sold him metals. I find myself hoping he skipped out, and was not coerced into getting cash and killed anyway. It has happened, a rare crime to be sure. Neither scenario is a good thing but damn. When lightning strikes close it’s hard not to do the hyper vigilance thing.

Person of year doesn’t mean doing good things. It just means most notable. Merkel fits that bill having run the gauntlet in dealing with everything from the refugee crisis to the economic collapse in Greece and keeping the EU together while pushing an environmental agenda too.

Without criticizing people who disagree with her, getting them fired, calling them stupid or mocking their disabilities. What’s wrong with her, anyways?

The mixed reaction to Mr. Trump’s proposal from some of his Republican rivals showed how delicately they continue to treat the front-runner and the voters keeping his poll numbers so high.

They still see his supporters as potential voters when T finally bows out. But if he does quit (and does not run as an independent) I am sure a lot of these voters are just going to drop out and not vote at all, sort of like what the Berniebros are threatening to do, but in even greater numbers.

I already offered a simple and easy Trump test: just spread out a copy of pages from the Koran on the floor that a Muslim would have to walk over to enter America.

Yeah, I saw your sarc tag, but it still wouldn’t work because:

1.) Can you imagine the optics? The US would become an instant pariah among Western nations, in part because it would inflame the entire Muslim world to the point where no Westerner would be able to safely set foot in any Muslim majority country. It would also almost surely radicalize many naturalized and Western born citizens.

2.) The US would be immediately cut off from all petroleum originating in the Middle East. I’m guessing that would cause major economic problems, not to mention political ones when gas suddenly shoots up to $10/gal or whatever, and every business’ operating costs skyrocket (i.e. it’s not just gas, it’s plastic and all the other petroleum by-products, including how it would impact the military).

3.) We’re talking about the concern being terrorists getting in, not law abiding regular Muslims (I’m not gonna say “moderate” because it makes it sound like that’s some special category instead of the vast majority of Muslims). How long does anyone suppose it would take a terrorist leader to find a scholar who (at gunpoint or otherwise) would issue a fatwa declaring stepping on the pages acceptable as long as it was for the cause?

those stupid poors can’t handle the truth of why they are poor!

Shapiro added that America’s permanent poor were not poor because they had been exploited by wealthier Americans, but because permanently poor Americans are typically not good with money, which is why lottery winners with a history of poverty largely fall back into poverty after spending their winnings.

“The reason people are permanently poor in the United States,” Shapiro said, “isn’t because they don’t have money, it’s because they suck with money. The reasons people are temporarily poor can vary.” As a rumble ran through the crowd, Shapiro continued, “That’s not even controversial. If you’re permanently poor [in America] for your entire life, you’re not great with money by definition…”

I think that they were smart by stopping him there, for his own safety.

That remind me to post today’s Libya story:

UN clears Greek-seized armoured vehicles for delivery to Libya

The United Nations (UN) has ruled that a shipment of 16 armoured vehicles destined for Libya that were seized by Greece were being legally transferred.

Greece announced in July that it had seized the vehicles (eight Streit Group Typhoon 4x4 mine-resistant, ambush-protected (MRAP) vehicles, five armoured Toyota Land Cruisers, two armoured BMW sedans, and one armoured Mercedes sedan) during a port call by the merchant vessel MV Tychy to Piraeus.

Greece seized the vehicles believing their transfer was in breach of UN Resolution 1970/2013, paragraph 9 of which bans the trade of weapon systems with Libya.

However, the UN has now cleared the vehicles for release, after the internationally recognised Libyan government (in Tobruk) claimed ownership of the vehicles.

Those MRAPs are going to go to Benghazi after they arrive and are armed, once there their guns are going to help fight Daesh.

From the Clinton speech she where I got the first quote:

Just a few days ago, two young women wearing headscarves were trying to have breakfast at a café near the University of Texas at Austin when another diner started shouting racist things at them. The girls left in tears—in part because of the ugly words, but also because no one else in that crowded café came to their defense.

As they left, one of the girls asked the room, “Who cares about us?” Somebody called out, “Nobody.” “We left,” they said, “because it was true.”

But it’s not true. And we have to make sure Muslim Americans know that. It’s how we stay true to our values as Americans. And it’s how we show the world who we really are—a strong, proud, united country that still knows, after all these years, that all men and women are created equal.

re: #199 CuriousLurker

I’m not sure #2 is currently valid-we’re largely self-sufficient in oil and gas at the moment, but it would probably roil world markets, just because.

I suspect a bigger problem would be that the people you’d actually like to let in might think twice about visiting/moving to a country where you were expected to insult others before entering.

It’s not backwards. Male circumcision isn’t compulsory in Islam, but it is important & strongly encouraged. It’s not a central requirement the way it is in Judaism. Also there are plenty of non-Muslims who are circumcised.

When I was younger it was pretty common for newborn males to be circumcised while in the hospital. According to the CDC it’s still pretty widespread in most of the country.

Angry Woman Harangues Praying Muslims, Throws Hot Coffee

A woman hurled anti-Islam slurs and then hot coffee at a group of Muslims after she saw them praying in a California park.

Rasheed Albeshari said he and some friends had just finished their prayers Sunday afternoon at Lake Chabot in Alameda County when the woman confronted them, reported Arab American News.

[…]

A park ranger approaches at that point and asks the woman if her harangue of other park visitors is appropriate.

“It is inappropriate, you’re right, for somebody to tape record me,” the woman says.

Albeshari says the woman had insulted his god, and at that point she approaches him, hits the man with her umbrella and then tosses coffee in his face.

They would always go into a place assuming from the outset that it was haunted then find “evidence” that it was (mostly bs and stuff that was faked) then on top of that they had a psychic who “didn’t know anything about the case” but really they had briefed them before hand. Right, Ben—everyone should just STFD & STFU and stop making comparisons until they’re putting Muslims in concentration camps and firing up the ovens. Of course, by then they’ll probably have Jews on the list as well, somewhere in between the atheists, Mormons, blacks, hispanics, LGBT people, and possibly Catholics (eventually).

And yet another: Vikings Fan Says He Was Confronted At Game By Man Who Demanded To Know If He Was A Refugee

Writing in the Star Tribune, Mayell says as soon as he found his seat, he was confronted by a nearby fan.

What I didn’t expect was for a man to push aside other people and point his finger in my face, demanding to know if I was a refugee. He needed to make sure I wasn’t a refugee, he said. There was anger in his face and vehemence in his accusation.

I was stunned. He didn’t know anything about me. We were complete strangers. But somewhere in his mind, all he saw was a terrorist, based on nothing more than the color of my skin. He was white, and I wasn’t. He didn’t see anything else.

Gratuitously stolen from elsewhere:

WASHINGTON—Expressing its concern that the fixation had grown “a little out of control,” the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution reported Thursday that it was pretty creeped out by how obsessed Americans are with it. The Second Amendment later admitted how relieved it was to be protected from “all the psychos out there” by a 3/8-inch-thick pane of bulletproof glass.

Meanwhile the “Well-regulated militia” clause of the Second Amendment is so fed up with being ignored by most Americans that it has gone off to sulk with the 18th Amendment…

re: #272 The Vicious Babushka

[Embedded content]

So let’s look at these statements:
1) “Bigotry = no Muslim is capable of embracing Western civilization”
2) “Bigotry =/= a huge number of Muslims do not embrace Western civilization”

A policy of allowing no Muslims into one’s country at all is effectively 1) in practice, so by anyone supporting such a policy is a bigot by Ben’s logic.

Statement 2) is basically just a weasel-worded version of statement 1), since it singles out Muslims based solely on their religion to make a statement about them without any supporting evidence. You don’t diminish the bigotry of pre-judging a whole group on unproven assumptions by diminishing the size of the group a little.

Even if you’re wimping out, and saying “Group A tends to…”, you’re still ascribing to each and every one of them an inherent behavioural tendancy based on nothing other than their race, religion, sexuality or whatever. That’s still bigotry.

So basically, by Ben’s own strawman argument, he is a bigot. And a coward.

Her 1997 mugshot can be found at this 100% RWNJ blog.

I’d usually applaud even a wingnut woman for overcoming a rough upbringing, regardless of how much I disliked her personally, but not this one.

Huh—this was all I needed to read:

Pierson has seemed to flounder, despite her ties to Ted Cruz’s 2012 campaign (and the endorsement of both Cruz’s father, Rafael, and Sarah Palin,)

Wonder what soured her on Cruz and led her to Trump? ($$$$$?)

Seems as if the law allows the government to aid insurers who experience losses on the exchange. Rubio and those of a like mind want to prevent that to encourage insurers to drop out of the exchanges and for the exchanges and private health care coverage to fail. Current National Assembly head Diosdado Cabello added that the government would appoint 12 new supreme court judges, among other “tasks,” before Dec 31.

The new legislature, two-thirds of which will be made up of opposition politicians, is set to begin work in January.

Venezuela’s government was stunned by Sunday’s elections, winning just 55 seats against the opposition’s 112 and losing control of the National Assembly for the first time since former President Hugo Chavez took office in 1999.

One of the opposition’s main aims in the new legislature is to secure the release of jailed politicians, most notably Leopoldo Lopez who was imprisoned for leading anti-government protests in 2014 that triggered violence leading to more than 40 deaths.

Thought I saw something similar out of Putin too.

Vladimir Putin has said he hopes nuclear warheads will not be needed to deal with terrorists, after Russia launched cruise missiles from its submarine at Syria.

During a meeting in the Kremlin, Russia’s Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu told the President that Kalibr cruise missiles had been fired by the submerged Rostov-on-Don submarine from the Mediterranean Sea for the first time.

He said TU-22 bombers also took part in the latest raids and that “significant damage” had been done to a munitions depot, a factory manufacturing mortar rounds and oil facilities. Two major targets in Raqqa, the defacto capital of Isis, had been hit, said Mr Shoigu.

President Putin said the new cruise missiles could also be equipped with nuclear warheads - but that he hoped they would never need them.

He said: “With regard to strikes from a submarine. We certainly need to analyse everything that is happening on the battlefield, how the weapons work. Both the [Kalibr] missiles and the Kh-101 rockets are generally showing very good results. We now see that these are new, modern and highly effective high-precision weapons that can be equipped either with conventional or special nuclear warheads.”

Guess we know where Trump’s getting talking points. Right wingers have been fan-boying Putin for months, so when Putin went there with nukes, Trump decided to follow.

And wasn’t there some sort of issue about some land in Canada that might actually belong to Maine? And we really should own both sides of the Niagara Falls. And I bet smugglers are using the St/ Lawrence Seaway, and they could smuggle Muslims as well as drugs, so we better get control of that.

There’s so much crazy shit going on. Yesterday, the SCOTUS heard arguments about whether to abandon the principle that we’ve used to determine representation for state legislatures for nearly 150 years, based on the cockamamie belief that only voters need to be represented.

Didn’t we go to war back in 1775 over that issue? Wasn’t that the guiding principle of our declaring independence, that everyone should be represented because the actions of government apply to everyone?

Now this is being called into question in a cynical attempt to pack state legislatures in favor of rural white people. And this cynical crazy shit was argued in front of the SCOTUS.

Sometimes it’s hard to get up in the morning, the bullshit is so deep.

Maybe that’s why Netanyahu is leery of him. I wonder if Trump even knows where Syria is located in relation to Israel.

Graham Lineman is the co-creator of “Father Ted”, one of the loved sitcoms made over this of the pond in the past 30 years.

You know, since the Constitution used that whole 3/5ths of slaves for apportionment, I’d say there is pretty good precedent the founders weren’t in favor of just counting voters

Non-voters to count as 3/5 for census purposes?

Nah. That’s been done to 700,000 deaths.

Shit. I think I just joined a Tea Party campaign to unseat Martha Roby of Alabama. Got a call from a nice anti-Roby AA volunteer, and gave him my email contact info. Turns out this is the only challenger:
