Jared’s lawyers: “Mr. Kushner can’t remember that conversation or its contents.”
3 anonymous folks: “Oh yeah, we totally remember that conversation and it was harmless.”
Maybe Kushner was desperate, not dumb … His family faced a huge hike in its debt servicing costs in December 2016 https://t.co/aN2xocHgGZ

Yeah a quasi Cyrillic font would be neat. I’d love to see that with Trump’s words.
Rule of thumb: If you are the suspect of an investigation, “it’s no big deal” is not the correct answer to any suspicious behavior.

Breaking news you guys!!
CNN was able to find that elusive person—a Trump voter from a rustbelt state who is now disillusioned!! Wow—I believe “rare as hen’s teeth” is the proper phrase. (Is there a single fucking Trump voter who has NOT yet been interviewed?)
Wesley Easterling noted that Trump had a kind of “charisma about him, something different.” The county he lives in typically goes for Democrats but in 2016 it went for Trump, despite having one of the highest poverty rates in the country.
Easterling is on food stamps and Medicaid and he believed Trump when the then-candidate swore he’d never touch Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. Trump lied and Easterling and his family are fearful they’re going to lose critical benefits they need to stay afloat.
“I mean, I felt just like I was — just like he played me for a fool,” he said with a look of sadness in his eyes. “I mean, I kind of took it personal.”

I remember back in the 70s when I was in college the Libertarians and left wingers were up in arms against the Trilateral Commission and they accused Carter of being David Rockefeller’s puppet. re: #42 BeachDem
A paragraph from Hillary’s new profile in New York Magazine:
Trump got plenty of negative coverage in the press as well, but, during the campaign at least, the negative stories didn’t seem to stick to him with the same adhesion. And even now, as investigations of his administration’s connections to Russia splash across front pages, the Times has launched a new feature, a weekly call to readers to “Say something nice” about him. I ask Clinton if she’s seen it. “I did!” she says with a wide smile, taking a beat. “I never saw them do that for me.”

I didn’t ignore it, I mentioned it in the last thread; I thought the whole thing was repulsive that some wingnut killed two men and injured a third because they stood up to said wingnut’s bullying.
I then mentioned that such behaviour from wingnuts would not deter me from standing up to such people if it happened in my presence.
The attack wasn’t even on the women (though the initial slurs were). The attack was on the men who stood up to defend them.

Hmmmmmm….I wonder if Bannon is secretly giggling about Jared’s situation?
My first venture with the sous vide cooker was hard boiled duck eggs. Turned out great. Just a little luxurious because, fuck it, why not, but also easy to do because no need for a sealed bag. Next up, trying for soft-boiled and onsen tamago (the other benefit—one carton, twelve chances to test out what you’re doing). I suck at eggs that aren’t scrambled, so this is a bigger hatch in my “win” column than it might be for anyone else.
(This will end with me trying to sous vide an omelet, probably)
Haven’t test fired the Instant Pot because I made a giant mess of beans just before getting it. But…soon.
If Jared’s lawyers go before a judge and try to argue that he was too dumb to know that requesting a special hotline to the Kremlin through Russian diplomatic channels was illegal, the judge is likely to throw the lawyer in a cell next to his client’s.

Of course, Jared can also fall back on the “I don’t recall that” defense.
Clearly, the Russian intel services have developed a functioning neuralyzer, which is actually kinda impressive.

Alan Dershowitz was on TV earlier saying even if everything in that report is true there is still no criminal conduct there, there is no statute you can point to and say they violated this. Someone brought up the Logan Act and he basically said a law that hasn’t been enforced in over a 100 years can not be enforced due to desuetude. IANAL, I have no idea myself.
And in a couple days, what is looking more and more like a traitor, is going to be laying a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington.
This whole debacle sickens me.
The hilarity here is knowing that the entire cast of characters who could have been privy to these talks hate each other so much, we’re actually finding ourselves guessing who has the biggest axe to grind.

Not exactly.
It made it a crime:
To convey information with intent to interfere with the operation or success of the armed forces of the United States or to promote the success of its enemies. This was punishable by death or by imprisonment for not more than 30 years or both.
To convey false reports or false statements with intent to interfere with the operation or success of the military or naval forces of the United States or to promote the success of its enemies when the United States is at war, to cause or attempt to cause insubordination, disloyalty, mutiny, refusal of duty, in the military or naval forces of the United States, or to willfully obstruct the recruiting or enlistment service of the United States. This was punishable by a maximum fine of $10,000 or by imprisonment for not more than 20 years or both.

Let me guess, Dershowitz argued that since the report is that the backdoor channel was never created, then no crime was actually committed. Perhaps Alan should look up “solicitation,” as under criminal law the solicited party does not have to carry through with the act for there to be a crime. Just soliciting an illegal act is itself a crime.
Since that time, the 1917 Espionage Act has been amended various times to include other things. Parts of it are incorporated into the UCMJ’s (article 134) prohibition for espionage (Michel Flynn should know that, and the penalty in the UCMJ is death or as a courts-martial may direct).
More recent Espionage Act cases have involved trying to establish contacts as well as disseminating information in an unauthorised way.

Solicitation to commit espionage is covered under the Espionage Act.
Note also that the New York Times, the Washington Post, and Reuters, each with different contacts, are reporting that it was intercepts of Russian communications that exposed this. That would be the very Russian communications that Mr. Kushner is alleged to have wanted to set up.
All of this a couple months before Donald Trump took the oath of office.
I’m thinking here that Gen. Flynn might be sweating bullets. (Have they pulled that guy’s passport yet?) The military can get him outside of anything the un-reconstructed Attorney General wants to do.
There is also the crime of misprison of treason (knowing a crime of treason is about to be committed and failing to report it).

In the United States, misprision of treason is a federal offense, committed where someone who has knowledge of the commission of any treason against the United States, conceals such knowledge and does not inform the President, a federal judge or State Governor or State judge (18 U.S.C. § 2382). It is punishable by a fine and up to seven years in federal prison. It is also a crime punishable under the criminal laws of many states.

It would be a very high bar to clear before the Court. The Supreme Court would have to consider such things as any ol’ spurious claim that “ferners hijacked the election” and other such things.
We’ll have to see: The whole thing might be moot by the time the Supreme Court gets round to it.

If Donald Trump makes his speech at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier about his Electoral College win, I’ll be flipping tables and setting them on fire here.
Last year our town invited a recently-retired commander from the US Navy to give a speech; he made his speech about how liberals are trying to force transgender bathrooms down everyone’s throats.
As a village trustee, I got up, turned my back in the middle of the speech, and walked to the farthest corner of the cemetery (where people from the Spanish-American War are buried).
At the next village board meeting I gave a different speech, one suitable for Memorial Day and those buried in the village cemetery. I called on the Cemetery Board never to invite that guy back.

I’ve seen more than one Baptist preacher end a eulogy exactly the way they end their Sunday sermons, by “giving the invitation” (for those present to repent of their sins, “accept Christ” and join the church.)
I have not seen anyone pass the plate at a funeral, though. I might ask my preacher brother to do so at my funeral, just to provide a parting freak-out.

I wrote about the fearmongering wingnut who gave last year’s Memorial Day speech in my village here:
My speech (if the Cemetery Board had invited me) would have been (short version)
Our town has never been much larger than it is now, but as you look across this field there are over a hundred flags fluttering on the breeze.
This cemetery represents a history of the nation’s combats, from the Civil War to the Persian Gulf War. As you move from north to south and up Rose Hill, you start with flag stands for the Grand Army of the Republic.
All of these men and women gave some, some of them gave all. Those who came home from battle became farmers, ranchers, business owners, husbands, wives, and parents.
Those who did not come home left behind families and friends who forever are without them; for them the war is not over and never will be.
If you have some time today after this remembrance ceremony, I encourage you to walk through the cemetery, and reflect on those of our village who answered the call to service. Reflect on their sacrifices and those of their families. Reflect on the meaning of Memorial Day, and the fervent hope that when our nation goes to war, we send our men and women forth in a just cause. Those buried here deserve nothing less.

re: #132 freetoken
I’m not so sure that creationism is a mental illness.
I would file it under “propaganda.” As Aristotle noted, “Give me the child until he is seven and I will show you the man.”
Creationism is inculcated in children. While some adults may chuck what they know of the world in favour of creationism (or any other religious position), very few change their positions on religious faith from the time they were children (relative to the whole of a religious group).
It is noteworthy that religious belief is largely a function of geography (whereas scientific evidence remains the same throughout the world).
It was an evolutionary necessity for children to be mindful of parents’ admonitions (go near the river and the crocodile will have you for lunch). Any child who failed to follow a parent’s admonition against crocodiles would not pass along his or her genes to the next generation.
As those here know I am an atheist, so religious people here probably will take my opinion with a grain of salt. I don’t see any difference between a strict creationist view of the origin of the world and a rabbi rising from the dead.
To call creationism “mental illness” in my mind cheapens actual mental illness. A person suffering from depression or schizophrenia did not get that way because they were taught to be so.
Creationism is learned behaviour. Mental illness is not.

re: #136 Anymouse
Creationism is learned behaviour. Mental illness is not.
There is a point in that video, in the time-cut that I indicated, where the presenter does something that is more than simple inculcation.
It is the presentation of irrational, and frankly illogical, argument as a rational thought.
This goes beyond simple deception (on the part of the presenter, a way of duping marks.) It’s the inability, not just the unwillingness, to recognize fallaciousness.
There is failure in cognizance here. Now we can argue from where this may arise - an emotional need vs. the absence of lucidity. So I guess I am open to reframing my claim that creationism is an emotional illness, rather than a mental illness, though I am not sure that this is a distinction that is determinable.

I would say it’s an emotional desire more than anything else. They way they look at it, if Creationism is false (it is), then their entire cosmology breaks down and if that goes, then that fatally undercuts their understanding of their place in the grand scheme of things (if there is indeed a “grand scheme”).
They need to believe in Creationism. Without that, their lives essentially mean nothing, from their point of view.
re: #140 freetoken
I would note however that such arguments are in fact aimed at children. The parents are already lost to propaganda and the video confirms what they have already been taught (to ignore reason and believe a religious assertion).
Children are generally not equipped to parse the difference between an emotional argument and an evidence-backed one. (Children also believe in the Easter Bunny or Santa Claus if they are taught about those.)
By the time children are mentally equipped to make such a distinction, they have been propagandised for years.
It is very difficult for a person to overcome an entire culture that is immersing them in unprovable faith-based assertions. When parents, pastors, community all reinforce the same message, when parents ensure their children go to schools that teach the same (or homeschool them for that), it is difficult for a child to recognise what is real and what is not. That is the point of propaganda and children are very susceptible to it (hence the Aristotle quote).
When a child is taught from the time they understand speech that evolution is a lie, climate change is a hoax perpetrated by godless secular liberals, &c and that’s all they hear for years on end, it is very difficult to penetrate.
Creationism is a tool, nothing more. It is a piece of control perpetrated by a cult (not a cult in the Catholic sense).
Still don’t see the difference between teaching strict creationism and asserting a rabbi rose from the dead to preach for forty more days. Neither has a scrap of evidence to support them, and both are asserted by hundreds of millions of people without evidence and they believe it wholeheartedly.
If you do not introduce a child to creationism, they do not adopt it. There is no difference between Christian creationism, Muslim creationism, Hindu creationism, &c except what is asserted. None have evidence.
My own child was introduced to religious views by his parents, but only insofar as there are many different religious views and none of them have any evidence to support them.
Unsurprisingly, my son is an atheist.

I need to rack out before going to the cemetery later this morning. Night, y’all.
Out of context, that is one weird sentence.
I mentioned my brother the preacher a bit earlier. He is not a fundamentalist and certainly not a creationist. Nevertheless he is part of the problem because he refuses to acknowledge that fundamentalists are a major influence at all. He believes that atheists and others with an “anti-Christian” outlook exaggerate fundy craziness and power to advance their own agendas. He persists in this delusion; claiming for example to have never heard of David Barton until I started ranting about him. To him, this is a lunatic fringe for which the whole religion is vilified. To me, it is increasingly the mainstream of active Christianity, and certainly a powerful voting bloc. There are many Christians who speak out against fundamentalist duplicity and greed, but there could be a lot more. When brutal totalitarians are running wild, silence is complicity.
I am religious, though I try to be a Christian the way I understand that - living a good life and helping others have a better life. I have no problem with science and human evolution is one of my favorite studies.
Fundamentalists - in any faith - are the problem and need to be opposed at all times by showing what should be instead of what they are.

Fundamentalists - in any faith - are the problem and need to be opposed at all times by showing what should be instead of what they are.
Fundamentalists are by and large predominantly authoritarians with the added soupçon of belief in rigid dichotomies. In their worldview, scripture and its earthly interpreters (pastor/preacher/imam/rabbi, etc.) are the Ultimate Authority and anything or anyone disagreeing with that UA is automatically Evil. There is no middle ground, no subtlety, no shades of gray, no healthy theological debate.
It’s an entirely different way of thinking, which baffles those of us with a more rational and informed view of Reality. To get a Creationist, for example, to even consider evolutionary theory as maybe even possibly valid would require convincing him or her to doubt the very Word of God (as interpreted by the pastor/preacher/imam/ rabbi, etc. Such doubt is considered sinful — even heretical — within fundie circles, so getting someone meet you even a tenth of the way is nearly impossible. In their world view, you would be an agent of the Devil, trying to lure them into sin and depravity. First evolution, then touch dancing, and who knows what else might happen!?

Trump-lite is at it again:Duterte makes rape ‘joke’ for martial law troops
President Rodrigo Duterte joked on Friday that soldiers could rape up to three women, as he reassured them of his full support under his newly-declared martial law in southern Philippines.
Duterte made the comments in jest during a speech to soldiers on Mindanao island, where he imposed military rule law on Tuesday to try to crush ISIL-linked fighters, who have been battling the army after laying siege to Marawi City.

The FBI/CIA/NSA should be on their feet demanding that security clearances be yanked from Kushner and Ivanka - for starters. Not a single thing any of these people have done merits their clearances, and their lies/omissions only shows that they’re incapable of doing the right thing.
There’s reasons that the rest of our allies are looking to limit (or are limiting) intel sharing to the US because it’s leaking to the Russians and undermining the national security for not only the US but our allies. UK and Israel are already limiting, and you can be sure the rest are following.
That doesn’t make the US great again. It makes the US a whole lot less safe, and the only ones who truly benefit from the chaos this administration is inflicting is the guy sitting at the Kremlin. Trump is playing entirely into Russia’s hands, and this has been clear for months.

My family was HUGE Nixon fans. We loved the EPA and OSHA with every fiber of our being, the 1973 assistance to Israel… Dad did not want to believe any of the Watergate stuff.
Until the tapes came out. He cried. “Say it isn’t so, Dick, say it isn’t so!!”
Dad’s parents cried for a different reason. Grandma was from Poland, Grandpa was from Russia, and the idea that a bad President could be put out of office without a shot being fired was the most miraculous thing imaginable. To them, it was absolute proof that America was the greatest country ever.

re: #135 freetoken
The video is not really new, just recently posted. The source has been selling DVDs to the home-schooling market for some time, and if a google search is a good indicator, he’s been very successful.
He used to work for one of the “creation science” publishers (Apologia) and apparently has an endorsement from that publisher for teaching from their books. I did listen go on about cosmology and I was like, uh, uh, uh, everything he was doing was to point out that the earth was the center of the universe and it was only a few thousand years old. It’s only a step from that towards geocentrism. I also noticed he didn’t even touch on the cosmic microwave background radiation, which was very new when I first read about it as a girl in the late 1960s. So he knew or should have known about this and didn’t mention it to his students, because it would be a proof against his creationism.
re: #197 mmmirele
I gathered from listening to a few minutes of his “lesson” that he really has no clue what is talking about. The depth of his knowledge appears to be limited to a cursory reading of Wikipedia and some creationist tomes of science.
Since I used to teach physics, I took a peek at one of the physics videos. It’s also horrible. He’s lifted stuff from a variety of other sources, which in the hands of a competent instructor could make for an interesting lesson. I can’t imagine how kids listening to his droning voice could even stay awake for 90 minutes.
Freetoken is right. This is child abuse.

re: #146 Shiplord Kirel
You should turn your brother the preacher on to Warren Throckmorton. He’s a professor of psychology at Grove City College, which is very conservative. It’s so conservative that Pence spoke at its recent graduation. However, Throckmorton is an implacable enemy to David Barton and his associates, including Glenn Beck. If a guy who works for a conservative college thinks Barton is a really big problem, then I think your preacher brother should at least take a listen.
For the record, I’ve worked with Throckmorton on busting a few people with fake doctorates from a local religious diploma mill. These include Lt. Gen. Jerry Boykin, T.D. Jakes, Lance Wallnau, and a couple of Phoenix megachurch pastors. The diploma mill is currently located in “shared office space” in Phoenix (read: mail drop with desks available for rental). I don’t agree with everything Warren does or says, but I support him because he’s so damned sensible on so much. And he’s no Trump fan.
Tell me once again how this guy is all there. Or maybe he has something on his mind?

Secret =/= secure. We have secure lines of communication with just about everyone already, especially Russia. This would be an attempt to bypass those. Having undisclosed meetings with foreign SPIES really does set you up for investigation at a minimum, and if you are found to have given classified information or attempted to subvert US institutions, that means you have committed espionage. Like, it’s one of those things they tell you about when you are granted a clearance. If this was done by any actual civil servant, they would have already been arrested.

TRUMP SCANDAL! No, not that one. Or that one. Or that one. Or that one. Hackers target The Donald’s businesses (Goes to The Register, citing ABC News)
(More at The Register):
The FBI and CIA are investigating an attempted hack on the Trump Organization.
According to a report from ABC citing unnamed officials with the intelligence agencies, it is believed someone overseas attempted to breach the President’s international real estate holding company.
The report claims that officials and cybersecurity specialists with both the FBI and CIA met earlier this month with Eric and Donald Trump Jr, who have been running the Trump Organization since their father assumed the Presidency of the United States in January.
The report did not suggest where the hackers may have originated. The Trump Organization has denied any of its data was compromised.

“…Christian said he was there to support “free speech” and demanded to know which side I was on. “Or are you one of these guys that tries to pretend you’re neutral?” he said.
I knew I was on whatever side he wasn’t, but I just kept my mouth shut and let him talk. I didn’t get much information out of Christian, or his friend, an older guy from the suburbs who was missing a few teeth, wearing dusty black leather biker gear, who refused to give his name because he was “too known.”
The organizer of the march, Vancouver’s Joey Gibson of the “Patriot Prayer” group that has invited more racist and anti-Semitic speakers to a June 4 rally in downtown Portland, disavowed any association with Christian.
But I got the distinct impression that Christian and his skittish friend had come to the rally with a larger crew.
As we spoke on the curb, I saw them signal to a fat man with the shaved head who was driving a yellow pickup truck flying a “Blue Lives Matter” flag off the back. The truck proceeded to circle the area as the right-wing marchers traded insults with antifa while marching down the city’s immigrant main street.

Christian has previously been convicted for felony robbery, kidnapping and possession of weapons. He will be arraigned in Multnomah County Court on Monday, where he may face additional charges, authorities say.
He’s also had ties to white supremacy in the area, according to authorities. On April 29, police confiscated a baseball bat from him at a “March for Free Speech” rally, after which he screamed racial epithets and gave the Nazi salute throughout the day, the Portland Mercury reports.
Police say he suffers from mental illness (of course—he’s white) but mom says no.

I think that gets into a very difficult area of mental illness or just plain nasty differentiation. I think anyone who yells at strangers and kills people for trying to stop him is mentally ill. Full stop. But are they legally not responsible? At what point do they lose their rights? That I don’t know.
For the second time, the Eustis, Fla. city council thought it “appropriate” that when an atheist gave an invocation before the start of the city council meeting, a city councilmember gave a “correct” invocation involving Jesus immediately after the atheist was finished.
Previously, the council called on a pastor in the city hall to do this.
The councilmember’s second invocation wasn’t on the agenda (that would be against state law in my state).
In Galloway v Town of Greece, it was noted that towns may have invocations before meetings, but towns may not favour any religious belief. Since that decision was handed down, towns have tried to get around it with “approved” lists of pastors or churches, prohibiting certain members or groups of the public from giving invocations, &c.
My own village board has never held invocations before the start of village board meetings, we just get on with the voters’ business as we were elected to do.
This also happened to a state representative in Arizona last month.
The Friendly Atheist deals with the Eustis case, along with video of the city council meeting and the challenge from another citizen during public commentary time, when the city councilmember tried to interrupt the complaint and shut the citizen down.

When you look at these individuals closely, those that just rant vs those that get violent there are differences. There is an excellent book that teaches all this chapter and verse. CL put me onto it. I read it several times. The Gift Of Fear. Gavin De Becker.
It is getting more hazardous on public transit by way of my own experience. I have witnessed or brushed with low level violence more in the last three years than the last fifteen. More homeless, more mentally disturbed, more on drugs they should not be or not on those they should be.. It’s also a very tough and vulnerable place to get in a jam. No way out, crowded. Hard objects everywhere by way of seats and handrails. Train, subway, bus. The subway is especially tough, no cell service in a lot of it. No help between stations.

re: #379 Dr Lizardo
re: #380 I cannot.
Yes, they still exist. Mostly used by “psychic hotlines” and sex chats, voting for television or radio shows, and other such things.
A Supreme Court decision allowed a regulation to go in place that required people to “opt-in” to be able to dial 976 numbers after a child in California allegedly ran up thousands of dollars of calls in a month.
Scams are still perpetrated using the area code for the Caribbean - the call then redirects to a 976 number running up telephone charges (cramming). AT&T in 2014 settled for over $100 million in such a case.
Software also exists (though less common now) that will take a computer’s dialer and call 976 numbers without the knowledge of the computer owner, running up telephone charges.

It’s better than all the diesel trucks that used to park there and stink up the area every morning, but the weedy elms around the chain link fence don’t hide much.

Trump’s Food and Drug Administration delayed the rule just four days before it was supposed to go into effect this month, jolting food purveyors from steakhouses to convenience stores who’d already been trying to comply. And even though the FDA touted the delay as a way to reduce costs and increase flexibility for businesses, the change did not come early enough to save these companies any money. Many had already spent millions of dollars printing and shipping new menus to thousands of locations across the country so they would be ready for the original May 5 deadline.

I learn something new every day.

The president, who has more than 30 million followers on Twitter, has been told by his lawyers to limit his posts. Each one, they argue privately, could be used as evidence in a legal case against him, and the president went through his entire overseas trip without posting a single incendiary message.”
