What We Know About the Belleville Shooter So Far

Crime • Views: 47,953

Another terrible incident of gun violence today, this time directed at Congressional Republicans at a practice session for a baseball game.

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise is reportedly in critical condition after being shot in the hip.

And it looks like the shooter was a Bernie Sanders fan.

The accused shooter who was killed during gunfire at practice for a congressional baseball game Wednesday morning was from Belleville.

The shooter was James T. Hodgkinson of Belleville, who belonged to a number of anti-Republican groups, including one called “Terminate the Republican Party.”

[…]

Hodgkinson is a member of a number of anti-Republican groups on Facebook, including one called “Terminate the Republican Party.”

▪  “The Road to Hell is Paved with Republicans”
▪  “Donald Trump is not my President”
▪  “President Bernie Sanders”
▪  “Illinois Berners United to Resist Trump”
▪  “Boycott the Republican Party”
▪  “Expose Republican Fraud”
▪  “Terminate the Republican Party”

[…]

Sen. Bernie Sanders said Wednesday he is “sickened” by reports that the man who opened fire at a congressional baseball practice had volunteered on his presidential campaign.

“I have just been informed that the alleged shooter at the Republican baseball practice is someone who apparently volunteered on my presidential campaign,” Sanders said in a statement. “I am sickened by this despicable act.”

I can’t help recalling a tweet last year by Sen. Rand Paul, who was on the scene during this attack.

I’m pretty sure this isn’t what Sen. Paul had in mind.

And the GOP will continue the race to the bottom by complaining about the overheated rhetoric contributing to the shooting.

Anything to deflect attention away from the fact that the guy probably shouldn’t have had access to guns at all. Or that the easy availability of firearms creates conditions such as this, or the ongoing mass shootings that happen like clockwork (hours after the Virginia shooting, there was a mass shooting at a UPS facility in San Francisco).

But for the easy availability of guns, mass shootings would occur much more infrequently. But for the lax gun laws in many parts of the country, shootings would be much lower than it is.

As it stands, states with stronger gun laws have a much lower per capita homicide by gun rate than those having lax gun laws.

Virginia’s per capita homicide rate is more than twice that of New York. New York, despite having a much larger population, had fewer homicides by firearms than Virginia in 2015.

Of course, we have Rand Paul and Trump himself musing about 2d Amendment solutions, but will now watch as GOPers deflect and defend both statements while claiming it was Democrats who were pouring gasoline on the political environment.

Well, they got their news deflection from the Russia investigation and Senator Jeff Session’s testimony. I don’t think they were looking for something like this though.

I sincerely hope that Rep. Scalise and the others who were shot come out of this okay.

Exactly. And they talked this way all the time in the Obama years when dealing with their constituents. No Democratic legislator or Bernie Sanders for that matter has said that Democrats needed to use “2nd amendment solutions” to deal with those they disagreed with politically. Sorry Republicans, it’s awful what happened and I don’t condone it all but stop talking about people in our government as “tyrants” and that’s why the 2nd amendment exists.

Gabrielle Giffords Responds to Baseball Shooting (bad headline, Yahoo, no baseballs were harmed):

Former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) issued a statement on a shooting that targeted congressional Republicans in Alexandria, Virginia, on Wednesday.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re a Democrat or a Republican, nor if you’re a senator or a representative, nor a staffer or a sworn officer,” Giffords’ statement read, in part. “If you serve the institution of Congress, you’re connected to your colleagues, current and former, by a shared sense of service to ideals far greater than yourself. This shooting is an attack on all who serve and on all who participate in our democracy.”

Earlier in the day, Giffords tweeted a response to a gunman opening fire on a group of people practicing for a congressional baseball game. House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) was among those injured in the attack.

mostly the GOP was doing their level best to distance themselves from Sarah Palin’s “surveyors symbols” marketing tag identifying which Democratic seats were vulnerable, Giffords was their top “target” and the seat was a point of contention ever since (especially if you look at all of the money that the GOP has dumped into this district in order to get McSally elected)..

Obama brought up gun restrictions post Giffords/Tucson and Sandy Hook and they were demonized for politicizing the issue that after all, is a real political issue.

If it takes the actual shooting of GOP legislators to bring awareness of the issue, I’m extremely sad that it had to come to that to even allow the discussion to take place, but happy to see if it actually spurs realistic discussion.

3 people killed, gunman dead in shooting at UPS building in SF

At least three people were killed and two injured when a man dressed in a UPS uniform let loose a barrage of gunfire Wednesday morning at the delivery company’s building in the Potrero Hill area of San Francisco, officials said.

In addition to the three dead, the gunman shot himself in the head when confronted by police inside the building and later died, Assistant Police Chief Toney Chaplin said.

Two other people were wounded, Chaplin said. Their conditions were not immediately known.

There is the other side.

That would be the ACA they have wanted to kill ever since it passed, so they don’t give a damn about those amendments anyway. Zero Republicans voted for the bill.

But my point is that Democrats were at least willing to let Republicans amend the bill.

Per capita by state firearms deaths (Kaiser Foundation):

kff.org

The top ten states are all states with loose gun laws.

Virginia is below the national average.

Nebraska is below Virginia but above New York (#37) - we have fewer people to hit.

Statistics in regard to Fireram is hinky at best. Until recently, the government did NO research —it was mandated.

The dearth of research funding goes back to 1997, when an amendment was added to an operations bill that passed in Congress with the language that the CDC will be barred from any research that will “advocate or promote gun control,” CDC spokeswoman Courtney Lenard told ABC News.

Called the Dickey Amendment after Rep. Jay Dickey, a Republican from Arkansas who served from 1993 to 2001, the amendment is often called a ban, but it did allow for research on injuries or deaths from firearms. However, Lenard pointed out that after the amendment, Congress cut funding for the CDC by the exact amount that had been spent on gun research in the year before. While that $2.6 million in funding was eventually restored, it was earmarked for traumatic brain injury research, according to a 2013 article in The Journal of the American Medical Association.

Illinois has, for example, rather strict gun laws -especially Chicago—yet we know there are a lot of death from firearms.

There is no way to know how much data may be biased.

WE also have no way of collecting info in regard to defensive use of firearms, whether fired or just brandished as a warning.

This chart from the CDC is sortable.

WE don’t know from it, tho, which are murders or lesser forms of use. Self-defense, accident, for example.

Total Deaths is also important to compare. Firearm death is still death.

I posted a Twitter discussion of this very thing the other day. Somebody said the the GOP accused Democrats of exactly the same thing over the ACA.

Bruce Bartlett replied, ‘The difference is that they were lying when they did that’.

Too many people, especially on the Right, remember the soundbites, not the events. So they remember Pelosi’s poorly-phrased ‘have to pass it to see what’s in it’, and say it was all done in secret, and forget that the House passed the Senate bill so the full text had been on line for THREE MONTHS before the House passed it.

Plus they remember the discussion of using some legislative legerdemain that was never done, but what they believe is that that’s what happened.

Idiots.

Appears to be a case of post-op depression:

Court records indicate Ripple wrote the robbery note in front of his wife and told her he would rather be in jail than at home.
Ripple told the judge Tuesday that heart surgery left him depressed and unlike himself before he robbed the bank. He had no criminal record, was a good father to four step-children and was in a stable relationship with his wife.
Ripple’s public defender said he has since been properly diagnosed, is on proper medication and feels like his normal self again, the Kansas City Star reports.

IOW, a good, upstanding citizen before all of this; to me, if no one was hurt, I could live with them having this sentence.

FOX: Changed slogan, same fear.

Political Rhetorical Terrorism Contributed to Attack

Because both sides do it:

The shooting Wednesday at a congressional baseball practice prompted swift calls to ratchet down the country’s heated political rhetoric, with one Republican congressman who was at the scene saying the “hateful rhetoric” on both sides has to stop.

Rep. Rodney Davis, R-Ill., specifically blamed “political rhetorical terrorism” - heated rhetoric on social media and in the news - for Wednesday’s shooting, in which House Majority Whip Steve Scalise and several others were wounded.

“This is the result, I believe, of political rhetorical terrorism. That has to stop,” he told “America’s Newsroom.”

I don’t recall anyone at all calling for shooting government officials on the Dem side.

I recall plenty of R state and Federal politicians knob-slobbing both the Bunkerville, Nevada standoff and the Oregon wildlife refuge takeover.

Right after the Boston Marathon bombing, I drew up a proclamation for our village board to send to the Governor of Massachusetts and the relevant cities’ mayors involved. It was read in the village board meeting by the chairwoman and adopted by the board.

No “prayers” in the proclamation. It condemned terrorism, noted our tiny village stood behind them, and looked forward to the state and cities overcoming that heinous crime.

All of them sent personal letters back to our village board, which were published in town and in the paper. (Turns out our village was the only city in W. Nebraska that sent anything like that to them.)

Actually, MS-13 started here, and was exported to Central America when we deported people.

MS-13 (Mara Salvatrucha; also known as simply MS or Mara) is an international criminal gang that originated in Los Angeles, California, US in the 1980s. The gang later spread to many parts of the continental United States, Canada, Mexico, and Central America, and is active in urban and suburban areas. Most members are ethnically of Central American origin (principally El Salvador).

Here’s a clue - we don’t publish our results in emails. We publish them in papers. Then others replicate them, or not. In the case of CRU, their results have been replicated by lots of other folks, which makes the emails of zero value, beyond propagandistic for liars and drooling morons.

All opinions are not equal.

Opinions that have been refuted with evidence a thousand times are no longer simply opinions, they are wilful ignorance (or trolling).

Wilful ignorance is a correctable condition (though it is not covered by the ACA).

The loving banhammer of correction is the cure for trolling.

Why must the one poster not toeing the line be banned?

OK, I’ll bite. With respect to toeing the line, my thesis is that US conservatism is a totally destructive ideology based on the desire of the rich to not pay their taxes. Its popularity is due to 1) right wing propaganda from Fox News and hate radio feeding the resentments of people who really ought to know better; and 2) both-siderism in the media continuing to pretend that real Republican atrocities are equivalent to imaginary Democrat atrocities, said both-siderism also being believed by many people who ought to know better.

It will be interesting to see if you have any reality-based counter argument to this.

Why the fear of different opinions?

Narcissistic Injury

Basically, extreme ideologies often are group narcissistic in nature. Group narcissism is basically like plain vanilla garden variety narcissism, only that the narcissistic investment is in the ethnic, national, political, or religious group the individual belongs to rather than the self.

In all other aspects it is as pathological as plain vanilla garden variety narcissism. A different opinion is perceived as a threat to the individuals image of the group he or she belongs to.

I’m hoping Scalise has a speedy recovery, but I cannot pray for GOPers in Congress because their actions against all gun control legislation led to them becoming targets at baseball practice this morning. If their hearts were filled with terror when this shooting occurred, they experienced what other victims of these types of shootings have experienced. Until this incident occurred, they displayed little/no concern for those 20 kids and six school staff-members who died at Sandy Hook, for the 49 persons who died in Orlando, for the Americans who died in Colorado, etc. I’m usually a compassionate person, but I have none for these NRA supporting, gun manufacturer supporting, tools. I’ve reached a stage in my life in which I’ve decided I’m tired of putting up with others’ BS which is why I’m totally unconcerned about Ryan claiming that “an attack against one of us is an attack against all of us,” because it’s BS. Where was his concern for all of the other Americans who died in mass shootings? Why didn’t he take to the airwaves to express support for their families? Why has he said nothing about some of our kids getting access to guns and killing themselves and/or others? These are rhetorical questions because I already know the answers. I’m so through with these liars, shills, and cowards.

Most if not all of your questions, on which you’d like us to reflect, are bullshit, like the Hadley CRU email nonsense, or the Rosatom Uranium thing. So, when you ask us to reflect on long-debunked wingnut email outrages, what we’ll be reflecting on is just how stupid/ill-informed/juvenile YOU are, and you’ll have given us EXCELLENT justification for doing so.

So, perhaps instead, YOU should reflect on just why you seem to believe so much that is objectively, demonstrably wrong, and how this may affect your worldview. Also, why your worldview leads you to believing things that are demonstrably untrue.

Surely that’s a question that depends on definitions:

If ‘day’ is sunrise to sunset, then summer days will be longer than winter days at most latitudes.

If ‘day’ is noon to next noon then season makes no difference.

You are a bit wrong about “makes no difference.” The interval from one “high noon” to the next is slightly longer when Earth is closer to the Sun than when Earth is farther away. Altho if by “noon” you simply meant 12:00, then nevermind.

The Railroad-Watch-collecting pedant in me wishes to point out that prior to the establishment of Standard Time, 12:00 was defined locally by the sun being at its zenith.

Imagine trying to work out a timetable for trains running at different speeds, even opposing directions on the same track without colliding, without Standard Time.

I’ve never been a Bernie fan and am still upset by his damage to Clinton, but I don’t think his action merits expulsion from the Senate. The term Revolution has been so watered down that it’s lost much of its original violent connotations. YEah I remember reading about that. Bremer IIRC was apolitical but inspired by Catcher in the Rye if I’m not mistaken. He later inspired the movie Taxi Driver which inspired Hinckley.

I’ve never been a Bernie fan and am still upset by his damage to Clinton, but I don’t think his action merits expulsion from the Senate. Sanders was quite explicit what he meant when he called for Revolution- “a million people outside Mitch McConnell’s office,” with the implication that those people will force McConnell’s hand because might makes right. (Sanders lost the KY primary, of course.)

You’re right not to try to defend him on the rest; there’s really no logical defense. The Democrats must be rid of the guy or be tainted by association.

The guy did the best he could to poison Clinton during the primaries. I voted for the guy in the Delaware primary and before that contributed to his campaign, and regretted it 10 minutes after I got in my car to go home. I heard him respond on the radio to a question about supporting Clinton if he should lose. I started screaming FUCK YOU in the car and have regretted my former support ever since.

There’s a reason too many of his supporters continued to hate on Clinton after the primaries, and that was because he let them run wild with the emails, wall street angles and even Benghazi as well as fanning those flames.

I liked it too.

I also got a quick idea for a little fun video.

Mom is in the kitchen and she turns from the sink to see her son pulling a container of spinach from the ‘fridge.

Before she can warn him, he opens the container. There is a loud screeching. It is the spinach screaming. The leaves had released their pent up frustration at their lot in life.

From inside the living room, dad awakens from his nap and yells: “Hey keep it down out there…I’m watching CNN!!!”

Mom gives that ‘I know you did that on purpose’ look to her son and says “Now you know how spinach upsets your father.”

And the son laughs as he bites down on a handful of raw spinach leaves.

The end.

Heh.

On another topic, I was really surprised to see how low Republican turnout was yesterday. That’s why Stewart nearly won. I actually thought that one wouldn’t even be close. If I’m Gillespie, I’m really worried especially since last I heard Stewart won’t endorse him, meanwhile Perriello has strongly fallen in behind Northam When I see my friends from the Tom campaign, I’m going to encourage them to sign up like I did. A lot of them are much younger than I am and I’m going to remind them about how two years after Kerry’s tough loss the Dems got Congress back and four years later got Obama.

He’s never been on any side but his own, and I doubt very much there’s much interest in people following his vaporous cause once he’s deposed. Our Violent Revolution has demonstrated that it is nothing without its Dear Leader, as its minions attack anyone seen as a threat, including candidates it endorsed literally yesterday.

This isn’t about Republicans. There are still more Sandbaggers out there, nearing their limits before they snap.

Sanders has never told his followers to go out and shoot anyone. Trump has. Rand Paul has, and he’s still so proud it, he’s still got it up on Twitter. Dozens of TV and radio pundits have. The Republicans are the people who deserve our ire, not Sanders.

Got my daily DailyKos note yesterday that included a plea to contact my (D) Senators on health care — and called both at that time. What was troubling was that I got right in ; no busy signal. They are not hearing enough from their constituents. They all need to be told that they must stop this train wreck by all possible means and not allow Republicans to get away with this at all.

And for those with Republican Senators — give them the same message.

Off-topic: Considering that Michael Moore’s best documentary, “Roger and Me,” was set in Flint, Michigan, does it seem strange that he hasn’t done some sort of followup about the current problems in Flint? Seems like it’d be an interesting way to create a sequel.

On the other hand, I’m not sure I want Moore writing about race issues, because there’s a decent chance he’d screw it up.

Elsewhere on Planet Trump:A Resolution Condemning White Supremacy Causes Chaos at the Southern Baptist Convention

Leaders from the Southern Baptist Convention were divided over a resolution affirming the denomination’s opposition to white supremacy and the alt-right during their annual meeting in Phoenix this week. On Tuesday, they initially declined to consider the proposal submitted by a prominent black pastor in Texas, Dwight McKissic, and only changed course after a significant backlash. On Wednesday afternoon, the body passed a revised statement condemning the alt-right. But the drama over the resolution revealed deep tension lines within a denomination that was explicitly founded to support slavery.

Me: I only have a key for one of them, the other doesn’t work - that’s getting fixed.

(get to well I can open)

SWG: Your paperwork here is messed up too.

Me: I just got my license

(over to library to use computers)

SWG gives me a whole flashdrive of stuff to do, including handouts for everyone in town. Asks about going to Bayard. I suggested today would not be a good day (tornado damage) and suggested he call their city hall before he goes, because they are probably kind of busy now.

Ugh, no, sorry. Cooked spinach is an abomination to all things. (I’m fine with it raw.)

There’s a theme here, I like most veggies better raw than cooked.

Fire roasted New Mexico or Poblano chiles >> raw.

Chopped raw Jalapenos in Pico de Gallo >> cooked.

Raw spinach in salad neither better than nor worse than cooked spinach in anything Florentine, or in Param Pak (but then I’d eat my own fingers if they were covered in a good Thai peanut sauce)

Wonkette lives for trolls. Perhaps we should send them to the lady in the cat suit with a whip.

The owner goes by Commiegirl on Twitter, they have folk like Marxalot and GayerThanThou. That ought to whet the tastes of any troll enough to get eviscerated (with votes, as they say).

On the other hand, Rebecca probably doesn’t need that either. Still, when their commentators get bored they go to places like FR and Town Hall to comment and stir things up, drag them home like a cat drags prey.

It’s not even that. It’s a question of the ownership of a Uranium mining company. It had been owned by a Canadian company, but that was acquired by Rosatom, the Russian nuclear agency. And neither they, nor the company they bought, have licenses to export.

So, at the very worst, Russia might profit by the sale of American Uranium to Americans.

Far left, far right fall for the same crap. It’s why I promise myself never to go oo far left.

The key is maintaining your commitment to objectively verifiable fact and healthy skepticism, especially of things that flatter your preconceptions. As long as you keep true to that, you can be as far left or right as you want.

Mind you, the problem with that is that far left and far right solutions BOTH don’t work.

re: #525 Whack-A-Mole

I’m actually very worried about where this shooting is going to lead.

While Bernie himself has denounced it and every major figure on the left will do the same, is there anyone on the right who will try to calm the situation before some asshat takes it into his head to try for some retribution?

So many of the major voices on the right have been calling for violence already, figures who have been given credibility and respectability by POTUS who himself has more than flirted with calls to violence.

That’s where this will continue. We now have the first true instance of a ‘liberal gunman’ that I can recall. There will be retributive attacks - the cultists are already primed and have been for years. The control of all branches of government has not in any way dimmed the persecution complex that they are actively fed and encouraged in by their media. And someone will inevitably take action.

Of course, there are already countless examples of the far right committing mass violence and America carrying on as normal. So perhaps this will not be as dramatic a change as I think. But I think it continues the degeneration of the American republic that political violence will become normalised.

re: #532 Quoth the raven, Covfefe.

I mentioned this over a year ago, on a Page about my personal story about rejecting the Right, but I had a brief flirtation with the wingnut fringe when I read a JFK conspiracy book. The dots were all connected, and my lack of critical thinking skills prevented me from seeing how flimsy the connections were and that not all of the dots were comprised of solid factual information.

It’s easy to suspend critical thinking when you want to believe. It was easier for me because I couldn’t imagine the government doing what they said. That was what killed it for me. I couldn’t even imagine the current shitty government doing it. So I had to read it a few times and do a bit of googling and viola! Bullshit!

It’s disturbing to think that things like universal healthcare, taxes on the rich, free college tuition, and increased immigration, especially for refugees, are ‘pretty far left’, because most of them were pretty goddam mainstream 40-70 years ago.

That’s the crazy thing. The Dems still support the same stuff we have since before WWII, while the GOP has been taken over by their Bircher wing, reinforced by the racist whites who left the Dems when we started sharing that stuff with non-whites. But they say we’ve gotten more extreme.

This is what Norman Ornstein means by ‘asymmetrical polarization’.

I guess we should expel that Hawai’i woman, Teresa Shook, for organising millions of women in a march protesting Donald Trump. While we’re at it, we’ll expel Jane Kleeb from the Democratic Party calling for people all over the world to be outside the Nebraska Legislature to protest the Keystone XL pipeline.

You do realise freedom of assembly is a constitutional guarantee, even outside a Senator’s office?

I have two* - one that runs at 5 beats per second and registers up to 30 minutes, and one that runs at 30 bps and registers up to 5 minutes. It’s starting to feel like the latter is about right…..

*Technically, they’re ‘Timers’, not stopwatches, because the train and escapement are running as long as the mainspring is wound. The timer hands are only connected to the running time train when you push the crown, like a chronograph.
