Russian Strategic Bombers in Cuba and Venezuela?

World • Views: 3,324

For today’s test of Barack Obama, Russia is hinting about putting strategic bombers in Cuba and Venezuela.

MOSCOW – A Russian Air Force chief said Saturday that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has offered an island as a temporary base for strategic Russian bombers, the Interfax news agency reported.

The chief of staff of Russia’s long range aviation, Maj. Gen. Anatoly Zhikharev, also said Cuba could be used to base the aircraft, Interfax reported.

The Kremlin, however, said the situation was hypothetical.

I wonder how much Billy Ayers paid to print “Prarie Fire”.

Because that little book has had a HUGE return on investment.

I remember all too well growing up with a fear of the Soviets. I never dreamed my children—born after the break up of the Soviet Union—would have to deal with this, too,

Bombers of March, 2009

The Obama administration is not worried.

They know that these bombers can’t be flown if the pilot’s have their fists clenched.

Smart Diplomacy pays off yet again!

My prediction: fail. another fail.

I have a very liberal ex-girlfriend who thought that Obama was a “strong black man”. Her father was on the trip wire during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Perhaps this will finally make her realize what a fool she was to vote for him.

He’s already so tired, I’m afraid this is going to put him over the edge into Chronic Fatigue Syndrome which will make me really angry…so angry that I may have to build a sock puppet in protest of the Russians trying to recreate the 1960’s style missile crises.

40 Curt  Sat, Mar 14, 2009 8:58:08am

With each passing day, it appears the only venue that he can manage to confront anyone on is when it’s an American citizen, whom he can sick the IRS, FBI and Secret Service on for disagreeing with him.

Those are not the “Domestic Enemies” of The Constitution. Bill Ayers, however, is one of them.

“Foreign Enemies?” Couldn’t find them with a flashlight, instructions send to his secure BlackBerry, and both of his good basketball hands. When they crash into him, and get some recognition as same, he’ll back off and pander to their whims…or try to play Chicago backscratching, keep the closet door shut for me, and I will for you political games.

JFK is one of my heros. He also knew what armed conflict looked like, and went there voluntarily. President Obama has kept himself from such matters in reality, and, as will just about every other aspect of his life, it has left him horrifically under prepared for his current position.

I’d venture if you could ever get him to be frank, POTUS is but a metaphorical trophy to put in his case in his underpriced mansion in IL.

Rush used to joke about Hillary’s Testicle Lock Box. Just where are Obama’s imprisoned?

The O must address this issue now. Even a strongly worded letter would be something. However, I really can’t say that I expect this admin to act like they represent this great country. I am sure they are all falling over themselves figuring out how to say mea culpa in Russia and Spanish.

Another embarrassment for the Canadian Human Rights Commission

Ezra Levant reports on the latest from his bete noir, the Canadian Human Rights Commission. Its tribunal just noticed that one of its most prolific sources of complaints also qualifies as a violator. The Human Rights Tribunal determined that Richard Warman has participated in neo-Nazi forums, including Stormfront, over the last few years under the pseudonyms Pogue Mahone and Axetogrind (via Newsbeat1):

This points out one of the problems of governmental management of political speech, one that has a parallel in the Fairness Doctrine. When government sets itself as the arbiter of acceptable discourse, it provides a path for extremists to intimidate their critics into silence.

The Fairness Doctrine would do the same thing with talk radio. Instead of actually promoting “diversity”, it would allow cranks to file no-cost complaints and hold up broadcast licenses, while the owners have to spend a fortune providing a minute-by-minute accounting of their content during the previous licensing period to prove their “diversity”.

I’ll lay odds that Obama whiffs on this fastball too:

In contrast, Brazil under Silva already increased state control of its banking system, but maintained rules that made private banks averse to risky lending. The policy that seemed overly cautious and growth-stifling before the crisis now looks wise in the economic free fall.

Since being elected in 2002 as Brazil’s first working-class president, Silva also embraced free market policies and made history last year when ratings agencies raised Brazil’s debt to investment grade. Now data from the Paris-based Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development show Brazil weathering the financial crisis better than most.
“Overall it remains fair to say that Brazil is likely to do better than most emerging markets, and undoubtedly better than in the past,” said Luiz de Mello, who runs the OECD’s Brazil and South America desks.

China messed with GWB soon after he took office, forced down one of our spy planes and held the crew for a period of time. The white house down played it and we got the crew back after a few days. Whatever the white house did it seemed to have worked because that was the last time China messed with us under Bush.

China messed with GWB soon after he took office, forced down one of our spy planes and held the crew for a period of time. The white house down played it and we got the crew back after a few days. Whatever the white house did it seemed to have worked because that was the last time China messed with us under Bush.

I remember that early on. And of course, there was 9/11. But when he hammered back, the bully-boys mostly barked. I don’t think they dared do anything overt.

In support of his advocacy of presidential negotiations with Iran, for example, Obama points to the constructive role that the Kennedy-Khrushchev summit in Vienna played in the ultimate American victory in the Cold War.

By all accounts, however, the Vienna summit was a disaster for the United States. It led, among other things, to the emplacement of the Berlin Wall by the Soviet Union, to the Cuban missile crisis and to the enhancement of the American role in Vietnam. Either Obama is familiar with the history and is deliberately exploiting the ignorance of his supporters, or he has no idea what he is talking about. (I incline to the latter view.)

Good afternoon {yma} - ya don’t get it. Biden is not a foreign policy “expert” - he simply sat on his ass on a Senate committee on Foreign Affairs. He’s never been a diplomat, never negotiated anything with a foreigner nor ever been, iirc, in the US miliary.
He’s just a lower level fraud than is Obama.

Hiya, {rw}!

Thanks for the info - I just assumed him being on a a Foreign Affairs Committee might have left some residues in his brains.
Appears not.

What really amazes me is that they are used to have staffers digging out info for them, to make them look good. so why aren’t they availing themselves of the far more pwoerful informations ervices provided by the US Administraion?

Russian nationalism combined with international aggressiveness. That’s a very dangerous bear and our administration shows weakness. This could be a bumpy ride.

Call me a cynic, but all of this seems as if it is just intended to reinforce the scenario desired to implement the real change that the present Administration is gunning for.

There is little that can be done directly about the fascism around Russian nationalism - Putin and his puppet need to do so to try to stave off the collapse of Russia. But it sure seems as if this Administration is running the Alinsky playbook to create the circumstances to implement their own flavor of fascism and finish the job started by Wilson and FDR.

He really needs to do something solid, more decisive, tangible, to gain the trust and admiration of the tyrants, dictators & butchers he so wants to impress and consider good friends. Maybe he might piss-off, frustrate or otherwise alienate various members of the JCS/General Staff(hint, hint). Slash military & developmental budgets or promise only to commit US military resources with the full consent of the UN.

I have a prediction too, #12. We will have war with Russia. They are not testing the College-Student-in-Chief for show but they have real plans and those plans are for war. China will get involved as well but it starts with us and Russia. And we have stupid moron #2 giving a reset button to a country whose leader was once the head of the KGB. Don’t worry though. We have time still for them to destroy our economy before we go to war.

There is no need for war if the gains can be achieved without the direct use of force and capitalizing on the naive approach of an Administration that is overly focused on its domestic agenda. That is just an extension of the weaknesses of the left who see the world as they want to see it as opposed to how it is.

Many, many years ago, after the wall fell, I had an awful thought, buttresses by this knowledge: The Russians/Soviets always, always, always took the long view. We? 4 maybe 8 years “vision” at a time.

Bad vibe I got: What if the who “Soviet Union Collapse” was but a facade? It sure would do, what it did end up doing (after I thought this in the early 90s) - downsizing the military tremendously.
The Russians, even before the Soviets, have had an ingrained paranoia and hoped for superiority complex. All brought on by centuries of being invaded and getting their butts kicked.

“The Russians” by Alexander is an excellent book discussing all of this in detail. Written in the mid-80s.

More news on Chas Freeman.

The Nation published an interview with him written by Robert Dreyfuss.
Dreyfuss, for those who don’t know, also works for Lyndon LaRoche so being an antisemitie comes naturally to him as well as to the Nation.

Here’s some choice snippets:

Q. You say that you retain confidence in the president. You don’t think that a quiet word from him to members of Congress might have stopped all this?

A. Oh, I think it might well have, particularly at the beginning when it was still a purely partisan matter. Before Nancy Pelosi jumped on the bandwagon. When you had the seven Republican members of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence writing a letter that was particularly partisan, that’s when, if the White House were going to weigh in, it might have done some good.
———————————————————————————————————————————————

Q. You were confident that you could withstand this assault until just before you dropped out.

A. Oh, I could have withstood it anyway. I don’t mind criticism…
…The only thing I regret is that in my statement I embraced the term ‘Israel lobby.’ This isn’t really a lobby by, for or about Israel. It’s really, well, I’ve decided I’m going to call it from now on the [Avigdor] Lieberman lobby. It’s the very right-wing Likud in Israel and its fanatic supporters here. And Avigdor Lieberman is really the guy that they really agree with. And I think they’re doing Israel in.

——————————————————————————————————————————————-

Q. The Israel lobby wasn’t too happy with other Obama appointments, such as James Jones, George Mitchell, Samantha Power. Why do you think they went after you and let them slide by?
A. Because I was seen as particularly vulnerable. I’m precisely not the things they accuse me of being. I’m not a lobbyist.
———————————————————————————————————————————————-
Finally, he seems to be calling his supporters, including Obama, who, after all, was prepared to hire him, “monkeys”:

Q. Do think that’s working? Are the ‘monkeys’ scared? Is the administration deterred? A. By ‘monkeys’ in this analogy I mean people who might accept an appointment in the administration who are independent, who have an open as opposed to a closed mind on these matters. I don’t think it’s working. But, I mean, I’m the last person to be able to judge that.

When my husband came home from Iraq the military put on the absolute best welcome home ceremony I’d ever been to. They never had anything like it when he came home from Panama, the first gulf war or Somalia. All the family members were in a gym waiting, they had food, music, kids dancing and they would announce where the guys were, such as the plane had just landed and everybody would cheer (oh my gosh, tearing up just thinking about it)…the doors to the gym were thrown open and suddenly the buses carrying our soldiers drove past and the noise and cheers were absolutely deafening…my husband said as they blew past they could hear the cheering. when the guys marched in it was just crazy, a very short ceremony, a short prayer by the chaplain and they were released and it was pandemonium with everyone trying to find each other, but pandemonium in a good way.

Same as the Cold War.
Russians use their military to expand their sphere of influence.
We use our bases to protect democracies.

Historically Russia has been aggressive in expansionism.
Historically we have used our military in defense, usually to defend other countries, knowing if they were not defended we would ultimately be defending our shores and our airspace.

Six months ago: 2 Russian strategic bombers in Venezuela

The Associated Press
Published: September 10, 2008

CARACAS, Venezuela: Two Russian strategic bombers landed in Venezuela on Wednesday as part of military maneuvers, President Hugo Chavez said, welcoming the unprecedented deployment at a time of increasing tensions between Moscow and the U.S.

The Venezuelan leader said the two Russian Tu-160 bombers will conduct maneuvers and that he hopes to “fly one of those things” himself.

Russian military analysts said it was the first time Russian strategic bombers have landed in the Western Hemisphere since the Cold War.

Yup

He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross from the Army for action from November 29 to December 5 of that same year, and his fifth Navy Cross during 5 to 10 December for action at the Battle of Chosin Reservoir. It was during that battle when he made the famous quote, “We’ve been looking for the enemy for some time now. We’ve finally found him. We’re surrounded. That simplifies things.”

exactly, timothy was such a strange guy. he so needed to be liked by those bears.
he projected on them just what he wanted and needed.
it was all abt. him. he was a narcissist.
the bears had no special relationship w/ him. they tolerated him until,
it became intolerable for one of them.
and timothy became part of the bear’s basic food groups.
that is all he ever was to them.
it’s a similar mind set to o, needing to be important.

Now he is bear muscle, bear fat, and bear pooh.

Mostly the later…….

In light of the rising frequency of human - grizzly bear conflicts, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game is advising hikers, hunters, and fishermen to take extra precautions and keep alert of bears while in the field.

We advise that outdoorsmen wear noisy little bells on their clothing so as not to startle bears that aren’t expecting them. We also advise outdoorsmen to carry pepper spray with them in case of an encounter with a bear. It is also a good idea to watch out for fresh signs of bear activity.

Outdoorsmen should recognize the difference between black bear & grizzly bear excrement. Black bear excrement is smaller and contains lots of berries and squirrel fur. Grizzly bear excrement has little bells in it and smells like pepper.

Nicaragua held a general election on 5 November 2006. The country’s voters went to the polls to elect a new President of the Republic and 90 members of the National Assembly, all of whom will serve five-year terms. Daniel Ortega (FSLN) won the race with 37.99% of the vote, Eduardo Montealegre (ALN) trailing with 28.30%, José Rizo (PLC) with 27.1%, Edmundo Jarquín (MRS) with 6.29%, and Edén Pastora (AC) with just 0.29%.[1]

talent as a of reading teleprompter 24/7? welcome to new American Idol

Hell, I myself could read a speech from a teleprompter.

No, Obama has oratorical skills, and he has a certain ability to project charisma. I will NOT/NEVER say those are first rate, because he was never truly tested during the campaign, and on those occasions when he was in a tight spot, he fumbled.

Obama was perfect for what the Alinsky Machine needed.

Saul Alinsky, Wikipedia, section on Community organizing, 2nd and 3rd sentences in the quote from Rules for Radicals:

“Dostoevski said that taking a new step is what people fear most. Any revolutionary change must be preceded by a passive, affirmative, non-challenging attitude toward change among the mass of our people.”

Obama’s job was to project a non-threatening, affirmative, acceptable, desirable image of change — to get a majority of the electorate to buy into it. With the MSM firmly in the tank, he could, and did, do just that.

IIRC, a video showed him depositing his ballot in a ballot box. Michelle was with him. Obama said something like: “Let’s see if this works.”

Heh … let’s see if WHAT works?
Let’s see if the ballot fits through the slot?

MPACUK, which initially supported the Islamist protestors in Luton last week, has realized how furious the British people have become. Now they claim the protesters were government agents sent to make Muslims look bad…..

Luton Protests: A Master Class in Propaganda

We want Muslims to consider what happened over the last few days since this latest media frenzy over the protests by Muslims in Luton.

Now we are not certain, but something about the protesters didn’t seem right. The language used on some of the placards seemed to echo the shadowy group formerly known as Al-Mahajaroun. Of course this is guess, but if proved right (Luton readers please come forward with your information) then it seems that this group, already seen as a front for the intelligence agencies by many leading Muslims behind the scenes, has led the Muslims into a well planned trap.

…..
It was a master class in how to get people to support the troops and, through them, support the war - dividing the country between Muslim and non Muslim, instead of focusing on the issues themselves.

It was all too easy, and all too convenient for the governments foreign policy agenda. It was too perfect, and that’s where the clue lies. Was it genuine or, as some within the Muslim community are now thinking, a cleverly orchestrated move by shadowy forces in Britain who used this as part of the propaganda war they are currently actively waging against Muslims?

re: #202 Onslow

From the Powerline archives:

Obama’s historical howlers: Obama has repeatedly made it clear when invoking American history to support his positions that he is shockingly ignorant.

Of course. I expected that.

There’s a very old saying - journalism is literature in a hurry.
There’s also a truism - journalists strongly tend to be left-of-center.
When one’s in a hurry and also biased, one tends to make mistakes.

Bottom line is, even those capital-L Liberal journalists who otherwise wouldn’t like Obama simply didn’t, or couldn’t, see what he was really like.

I’ve got to repost that quote from the AP article just one more time:

U.S. plans initiated under former President George W. Bush to position defense missiles in Poland and the Czech Republic had particularly irked Russia, which has welcomed his successor’s apparently more cautious approach to the divisive issue.

I can’t believe I’m living in an age when the press will twist the truth so violently to serve their master. Have we really reached the point where this kind of doublespeak is acceptable? If Obama broke down in tears during a press conference, hid under the podium, started screaming “I want my mommy!” and refused to come out until everyone left the room, the press would report on how he “represents America to the world with a sensitive, human touch that is a welcome change from the brash, aggressive approach of his predecessor.”

Note to Zer0 … it might be wise for you and the rest of your sandbox playmates to review these frikkin’ tapes - you all might just learn something!

The original tape recordings of EXCOMM’s meetings are currently held in the John F. Kennedy Library in Dorchester, Massachusetts. Great strides have been made in declassifying and publishing the tapes. [2] Excerpts from the first meeting, which took place on October 16, 1962, document the reactions of the committee members upon initially hearing the news that medium and long-range ballistic missiles might be stationed in Cuba. In the summer of 1985, McGeorge Bundy, who served as EXCOMM’s Special Assistant for National Security, transcribed the tapes from the October 27, 1962 meeting. James G. Blight, Executive Director of the Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard University, edited and annotated Bundy’s transcriptions.

…. but then again that would be h0ping for too much?

This isn’t much of a threat. But, imagine this scenario:

North Korea launches a missile at the U.S. under the cover of a “test.” We, or Japan, shoots it down. The Norks respond with a full (14,000 artillery pieces) artillery attack on Seoul which kills thousands and burns the city down. At the same time, Iran closes the Straits of Hormuz. A week later (while all our naval assets are on the way to the Persian gulf) China launches a full-scale invasion of Taiwan.

What would Comrade Obama do?

It would be very bloody and interesting… hopefully the regional/Theater US Commanders would probably win their wars against those jerks faster than the O’s office can put out a plea for “talks”… If seriously and quickly rebuked on the ground NK may have a coup willing to talk real change/surrender without being executed… the Navy can clear the gulf of Iranian “influence” in a very long afternoon… Good luck with that China, the transports won’t make it close enough to shore to invade Taiwan if they’re seen coming in strength…

We have time still for them to destroy our economy before we go to war.

This prediction fails to take into account the history of Russia and the Soviet Union. Russia is careful. A nation of chess players calculates ahead. Russia isn’t in any position to win a conventional war with the U.S. and nobody wins a nuclear war. Russia, for the next decade at minimum, can only play to rebuild her influence in the “near-abroad” and set up a network of alliances that hems in the U.S. and puts us at odds with China, India, Pakistan, Iran, etc.

That’s no small agenda, because with India and Pakistan sworn enemies, how effectively will they cooperate in Russia’s schemes? India and China are rivals of sorts. The U.S. has major trade relations with both India and China, and both rising powers don’t want to mess up their current move toward first-world economic power status. So Russia will only achieve a fraction of its aims in this direction. A decade from now, China and India will be relatively stronger, the U.S. a bit weaker only because the pie percentages must add to 100, and Russia, at best marginally stronger and still well toward the bottom in the rankings of influence and clout. Europe will have got weaker. The demographics just don’t permit sustained high standing for Europe in the world. There won’t have been any war pitting any great power against any other. Those are much too dangerous and destructive. There could be squabbling about access to resources; appetites outrun supplies. But those will be fought out through proxies and diplomatic maneuvers.

Why is it that the international and economic policies of this Obama administration lack the understanding of how to operate the government, including the military, of the United States from a vision of our countries strengths and not weakness? It is because they cannot focus on anything other than the flawed left of the Democratic party which has a agenda of weakening this country.
This administrations thought process and planning is to make friends with the left and the MSM. Unfortunately, they are all now starring in “The Potomac Comedy Channel” version of “Episode 5 : The Empire Strikes Out”

While we are all concerned with the economy, there is still a big bad world out there. Hope dealing with the Russians doesn’t interfere too much with Obama playing hoops.

The way it is going now, I expect we will be LEASING bases to the Russians and Chinese as a way to get extra money.

Then we will let Russia or China, or both, take over our missile defense system to save even more money. That way we will have more money coming into the country than is going out. You know, just like it used to be.

Finally, things will be the way Obama wants them.

Funny how the wheel turns. Remember back when BushII was running for Pres and much was made of the Texas Air National Guard, that they were superfluous and really served no purpose whatsoever? Now we have Bush gone from office, and what appears, but a manned-bomber threat to the very area he covered back in his flying days. Irony definitely lives!
