The practicality of Mr. Obama’s pledge to change the ways of Washington is colliding once more with the reality of how money, influence and governance interact here. He repeatedly declared while campaigning last year that he would “not take a dime” from lobbyists or political action committees. So to follow through with that promise, Mr. Obama is simply leaving the room.

There is no gold standard. Gold standard ended with Nixon
The 1944 Bretton Woods agreement solidified the dollar as the preeminent world reserve currency, replacing the British pound. Due to our political and military muscle, and because we had a huge amount of physical gold, the world readily accepted our dollar (defined as 1/35th of an ounce of gold) as the world’s reserve currency. The dollar was said to be “as good as gold,” and convertible to all foreign central banks at that rate. For American citizens, however, it remained illegal to own. This was a gold-exchange standard that from inception was doomed to fail.
The U.S. did exactly what many predicted she would do. She printed more dollars for which there was no gold backing. But the world was content to accept those dollars for more than 25 years with little question-- until the French and others in the late 1960s demanded we fulfill our promise to pay one ounce of gold for each $35 they delivered to the U.S. Treasury. This resulted in a huge gold drain that brought an end to a very poorly devised pseudo-gold standard.
It all ended on August 15, 1971, when Nixon closed the gold window and refused to pay out any of our remaining 280 million ounces of gold. In essence, we declared our insolvency and everyone recognized some other monetary system had to be devised in order to bring stability to the markets.
Amazingly, a new system was devised which allowed the U.S. to operate the printing presses for the world reserve currency with no restraints placed on it-- not even a pretense of gold convertibility, none whatsoever! Though the new policy was even more deeply flawed, it nevertheless opened the door for dollar hegemony to spread.

They are right to be worried, since Phase 2 of Screw the Debt Holders will be major inflation. Obama bucks are going to have a rather short half-life. Holding assets that will adjust for inflation (i.e. gold) is a much better place for your wealth than deflating cash.

Even better, and not surprising. The books are a lot darker and more twisted than the films, especially given their historical period.

re: #80 buzzsawmonkey
For that matter, though I've never read Goldfinger, I've wondered whether the name "Oddjob" (i.e., "queer") was supposed to imply something about that character's sexuality. There is a tradition going back to the 1930s (Eric Ambler's Background to Danger, Sinclair Lewis's It Can't Happen Here) of the master villain's evil right-hand henchman being homosexual--possibly because of Ernst Rohm.
See also Peter Lorre's characters in both The Maltese Falcon and Casablanca.

Pussy Galore was a lesbian in the original Ian Fleming "Goldfinger"
So was Tilly Masterton, as 007 noted when he and Masterton first saw Ms. Galore;
Bond thought she was superb and so, he noticed, did Tilly Masterton who was gazing at Miss Galore with worshipping eyes and lips that yearned. Bond decided that all was now clear to him about Tilly Masterton.
- Fleming, Goldfinger, p. 186.
And in the original novel, Goldfinger's "minions" other than Oddjob, who was supposedly Korean, were mainly Chinese, supplied by the Beijing government along with the "exceptionally dirty" (cobalt-cased) A-bomb he was supposed to detonate in the vault.
(Which makes no actual sense, as the result wouldn't be "radioactive gold", instead it would be "heavy metal fallout spread over half of Kentucky, making it look like Chernobyl for about fifty years". )
/but then, Fleming wasn't a physicist or nuclear weaponeer, just an ex-Naval Intelligence type who wrote spy novels. Very good spy novels, but, well, you know...
cheers

Yes, OddJob is Korean. But the question was about GF's minions, plural. I assumed that meant to the minions who assist in the assault on Fort Knox; and they were Chinese.
Ah, gotcha. Only thought about Oddjob.
However, since the movie is titled Goldfinger, I'd guess that the minions were probably all proctologists.

My bad. The correct information is enough gold to fill two (2) Olympic swimming pools: [Link: ngm.nationalgeographic.com...]
"For all of its allure, gold's human and environmental toll has never been so steep. Part of the challenge, as well as the fascination, is that there is so little of it. In all of history, only 161,000 tons of gold have been mined, barely enough to fill two Olympic-size swimming pools. More than half of that has been extracted in the past 50 years. Now the world's richest deposits are fast being depleted, and new discoveries are rare. Gone are the hundred-mile-long gold reefs in South Africa or cherry-size nuggets in California. Most of the gold left to mine exists as traces buried in remote and fragile corners of the globe. It's an invitation to destruction. But there is no shortage of miners, big and small, who are willing to accept."

re: #91 callahan23
Was that the reason he named her the way he did or did Pussy mean a different thing at the time?
%P% I honestly don't know.
Yes, it meant exactly the same thing then that it does now. In the novel, instead of a stunt pilot, Ms. Galore was the leader of an all-woman gang, the Concrete Mixers, from Chicago, which specialized in smuggling (good place for it, what with Lake Michigan right in front). While it was never stated, the implication was that 007 already knew of her (probably due to her smuggling activities, which by going through Canada would have attracted the attention of the SIS), and that "Pussy Galore" was an alias. If so, her real name remains unknown.
/Given the choice between the movies and the books, I defer to the books on most subjects re 007.

The most overt homosexual joke in the film is Captain Renault's response when Rick tells him the letters were hidden in Sam's piano
I'd say the most overt one is when the young Bulgarian girl is begging Rick for help, mentions that she will be meeting Capt. Renault accompanied by her husband, and Rick replies "Captain Renault is becoming very broad-minded".

Sorry. It did not live up to the (IMHO) audacious, refreshing "reboot" of Casino Royale.
I really enjoyed Casino Royale. Great characters and an interesting plot, plus lots of action while keeping the gadgetry to a minimum. Bond came across as a lot more human, too; having your balls beaten to a bloody red pulp by the villain doesn't exactly scream "Suave, debonnair and invincible." Although as I recall, in the book Bond was forced to sit on a seatless stool pipe, not a bottomless chair. I guess there are still some limits when it comes to ratings.

Joel Cairo in The Maltese Falcon is introduced in the book as being "queer." It is merely implied in the film, with some gardenia perfume, a few raised eyebrows, and the positioning of the head of Cairo's walking stick in his first scene; had the film been made five years earlier it would have been much more frank.
For that matter, it is clear that Cairo has a yen for Wilmer, Gutman's gunsel. "Gunsel"--derived from the Polish/Yiddish for "goose"--has nothing to do with guns; it is a term analagous to the term "chicken," which means a young, sexually subservient gay man.
Lorre's character of Ugarti in Casablanca is not around long enough to show any particular sexual bent; he is, however, certainly oily, furtive, and effeminate. The most overt homosexual joke in the film is Captain Renault's response when Rick tells him the letters were hidden in Sam's piano; "Serves me right for not being musical." "Musical" was a common euphemism of the day for describing someone as homosexual--and, of course, Renault's heterosexual appetite has been a running joke through the film.
Great backstory. Thanks.
Pity about the advent of censorship in Hollywood. The Marx Brothers also suffered; it's almost unbelievable what they got away with in their earlier films, and how much the studio clamped down on them later.

Actually, at the time (late Thirties/early Forties) the term "gunsel" had begun to 'morph' from the original meaning you mention to the more commonly-understood modern one of a cheap hood. Hence, Spade (Bogart) using it re Wilmer was a rather neat double-entendre', showing that Spade was something more than a typical thick-necked "private dick".

I can't believe no one has brought up the best secret agent ever:
The evil crime syndicate Thanatos is bent on taking over the world, using a magnetic wave generator that will cause all metal-based machinery to grind to a halt. However, the well-known British secret agent normally assigned to such tasks isn't available, so they engage his civilian brother, Neil, to help. Neil, played by Neil Connery, is a world-class plastic surgeon, hypnotist, and lip-reader, which turn out to be precisely the skills required for thwarting Thanatos.

re: #189 quickjustice
Another trivia question: based upon his parentage, what nationality is James Bond?
In The Man With the Golden Gun, intended by Fleming to be the last 007 novel, in turning down a knighthood (Katie to go with your Charlie Michael George was what the telegram from M said), 007 stated in his replying cable, Aye am a Scottish peasant and Aye shall always be a Scottish peasant. To be exact, "Bond" would be a not-uncommon name among Scots "borderers", principally in the west.
Trivia note; the real Dr. James Bond, an ornithologist (author of Birds of the West Indies, 1947), was a friend of Fleming's, as they lived next door to each other in Jamaica. when Fleming created his character, he thought "James Bond" would be a strong, masculine name. His friend, Dr. Bond, agreed to let him use it, but then said, "Go ahead, Ian, but i'm telling you... nobody will ever want to read a novel about a spy with a silly-ass name like 'James Bond'.'
Thankfully, Dr. Bond was a better ornithologist than he was a literary critic.

The Nautilus was also impossibly huge by any standard. I don't mind suspending disbelief, but sometimes things become so ridiculously improbable that the impossibility of ignoring them grates it's way to center stage.
Has Connery been in anything since? I would hate for that to be his last film.

The franchise descended to parody during much of Roger Moore's tenure and thereafter. Let's face it: the books were written in the 1950s, and many of the movies were shot in the 1960s. Jack Kennedy loved Bond.

The Nautilus was also impossibly huge by any standard. I don't mind suspending disbelief, but sometimes things become so ridiculously improbable that the impossibility of ignoring them grates it's way to center stage.
Has Connery been in anything since? I would hate for that to be his last film.
I know he turned down a lead role in Lord of the Rings, claiming retirement was just too enjoyable and that he didn't understand the plot.
According to IMDB, he's involved in a project called "Hexum," but the details are only available on the subscription side.

After Bond, I liked Connery best in "The Untouchables", starring Cosner.
By far his best role, in my opinion. He was great as Bond - the role is his forever - but Malone's character was so deep and compelling, and so extremely well played that it blows his Bond away in terms of acting ability. Connery owned the camera in every shot he was in.

"...It's crazy to tie anything in the economy to a finite supply of any metal."
Actually, that's the whole point of the gold standard, to tie government money to a finite commodity, to prevent politicians from taxing via inflation.
The fact that the medium of exchange is finite, does nothing to prevent the quantity of wealth (i.e., actual *stuff*) from increasing. (Opposite in fact, as a stable money encourages capital investment).

Dean's character may have been fighting his bisexual impulses (he had two parents, even if Dad was emasculated), but Mineo's character had no parents; he was tended by a female maid, another indication that he was "that way." Mineo had to go so that True Heterosexuality (and, of course, Love) could triumph.

The P-35 (that I use) has that feature, as do most Smith & Wesson autos going back to the original Model 39 of 1958 vintage. Other than the obvious advantage of avoiding the "round left in the chamber" accident, if you get into a scuffle with an attacker and are about to lose control of your sidearm, you can hit the magazine release, eject the mag, and he can't shoot you with your own weapon.
/This is a good point to produce your second weapon and invite him to return yours, butt first. I always preferred a 2 1/2" or 3" .357 Magnum for my backup, even when my primary sidearm was a 1911.

I think this poor girl's memory will be used in any way people want in order to forward their particular agenda. Her death was tragic. Now it has become iconic.
Martyr's deaths always are. Islamists have debased that term by using to describe murderers, but Christianity also has many marytrs who died for the faith. It remains an important religious/ cultural phenomenon.

And of course, let's not forget The Man Who Would Be King.
And The Hunt For Red October, the only good film adaptation of a Tom Clancy novel. also a classic example of the Russian Rule.
Russian Rule; When a male action star reaches the age that he is no longer quite believable as such, he will be cast as a senior Russian/Soviet officer. If the film is set during the Cold War, he will be one who is privately opposed to the Communist Party, or at least is willing to disobey orders to do what's right.
/Other examples include Charles Bronson (Telefon) and Harrison Ford (K-19; The Widowmaker).

Time to head home and keep working on fixing my wife's email problem.
*@#@$#@*#&@*!#!#! Outlook Express
(Non-geeks can stop reading here)
Her inbox got too large; it won't compact it, and it won't get more email.
I just hope it hasn't lost all the email in it; then she's lost today's email. (I backed it up last night)
Now if I could just get her to use Thunderbird. It would take a week or so of random calls "How do I do this?" after she got over the big change.
Monday night - installing new disk drive (down to too little to compact email for months, but ide drives are getting hard to find)
Tuesday night - fixing email, but even moving a lot of messages out of inbox didn't fix it, and OE won't compact it.
Wednesday - copy all email out of inbox; delete inbox; and let it re-create inbox and copy all email back, while hoping it works. If not, show her Thunderbird. on my systems.

Nope, not at all. But, then again, she's one of those people who if I actually met them I wouldn't stop to say anything. No point in doing so. Her main purpose in life is be decorous and she is that.
But, don't let good looks fool you either. I did a stint in a movie with Jorga Fox (movie stunk, went right to video) and we talked for a good time on set between takes, and she was a hoot, could almost out talk me, on many subjects.

I don't get worked up about it either. I should probably be more angry about it, knowing the statistics on how many strippers and prostitutes have been sexually abused earlier in life and how many are pressured into their careers by exploitative men. But men like to look at pretty women, and pretty women want to make money, so it's something that will probably never change. As Wendya says above, we have legal equality and we can make choices are grandmothers couldn't, and that's cool.

Like I said, the average middle aged man fetish.
Something like this:
Asian Teen Has Sweaty Middle-Aged-Man Fetish
AOMORI, JAPAN—At first glance, 17-year-old Misaki Nakajima seems like any other shy and submissive Japanese schoolgirl. She loves shopping, text messaging, and the color pink. But beneath her wholesome exterior lies a wicked secret: Misaki Nakajima is consumed by sexual fantasies involving sweaty, middle-aged American men.
"I can't explain it," said Nakajima, dressed in a pleated miniskirt and pure white knee socks. "There's just something about American men who are at least twice my age and nearly three times my body weight that totally drives me wild."
Added Nakajima, "They're so hot."

A gallon of paint sure hides alot a bondo.
Drat. You've plumbed the secret of my success as a model builder.
Seriously, my chosen 'model filler putty' is Bondo, or any similar one-part, auto body spot putty, 3M or PPG. It's basically the same thing they sell in hobby shops as 'filler putty', like Squadron Green Stuff or Dr. Microtools Red. The differences being;
1. The auto spot putty adheres better, dries faster, sands finer;
2. It doesn't crack, crumble, and fall out with age (like Squadron Green Stuff);
3. You can paint over it with anything and it won't melt (unlike Dr. Microtools, which really doesn't like acrylic lacquers); and
4. A one- pound tube of the spot putty, which lasts me about two years, costs about seven bucks, versus four dollars for a 3.5 ounce tube of Squadron or six for a two-ounce tube of Dr. Microtools.
/You'd be amazed what useful model-building tools you can find in your local pharmacy's cosmetics aisle, too.

Bomb strikes Shiite market in Baghdad, killing 61
At least 61 people were killed and more than 100 wounded.
BAGHDAD (AP) – A bomb hidden in a cart of vegetables ripped through a crowded market in Baghdad's Sadr City on Wednesday, killing at least 61 people, Iraqi officials said, just days after the U.S. military closed its main base in the Shiite district.
It was the third deadliest attack this year and occurred less than a week before a deadline for U.S. combat troops to leave Iraqi cities under a new security pact.
An hour later, two roadside bombs exploded in predominantly Shiite neighborhoods of Baghdad. The first, outside a billiards hall, killed one and wounded 19, while the second wounded four, police and hospital officials said.
The 7 p.m. blast at the market appeared to be timed to maximize casualties by striking shoppers buying food for their evening meal.
The explosives were loaded on a motorized pushcart and shrapnel was blown more than 600 yards away, a police officer said.
Police and hospital officials said more than 100 people were wounded. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information.
I am certain this was Khamenei & Ahmadinejad paying back al-Sistani and the US for "meddling" in Iran. They are perfectly willing to kill Iranians, so they would have no probelm slaughtering Iraqi Shiites too. These guys aren't fooling around. When are we going to get serious about them?

re: #598 Kragar (Proud to be Kafir)
Can you mold with it or form pieces with it?
Not really. I tend to make assemblies like that by either adapting similar parts from other kits (for instance, some airplane drop tank halves make very convincing gun fairings on other aircraft, etc.) or by carving them out of styrene sheet, block, rod, etc., or building them up from styrene shapes like Evergreen brand styrene bar, I-beams, C- or U-channel, tube, and so on.
For really complex stuff, or if you need several of one piece (like tires or wheels), the best bet is to make one "master", use RTV (Room Temperature Vulcanizing) rubber to make a mould of it (in two halves), and then cast duplicates in two-part resin. You can buy the RTV rubber and the resin at most of the better hobby shops. There are several places you can go online to learn the ins and outs of resin casting, too, like finescalemodeler.com or IPMS.

Beck is scary. There's a few video montages the left-o-sphere has put together of moments when he weeps on camera. I can't even watch them though, because I don't think Beck is just being an entertainer. I think he's disturbed.
What bothers me is that his freak show is extremely popular, and I don't think everyone is watching it just to point and laugh.

What models do you like to build?
Right now, I'm working on classic (pre-1945) cars in 1/24 and 1/25 scale. Last week, it was 1/72 airplanes (three A-26 Invaders, a Boeing 247D, a Northrop Gamma, and a Ford 5-AT Trimotor). After I get tired of cars (besides classics, I like exotics, muscle cars, and police/fire vehicles), I'll do spacecraft for a while; besides a Saturn V, I've got a 1/72 Space:1999 Eagle I'm going to put a full interior in. I also build armor in 1/72 and 1/76, warships in 1/700, 1/720, and 1/350, and airplanes in 1/48, plus science fiction kits in any scale.
Believe it or not, I generally have two or three similar models on my workbench at the same time, working on them "assembly-line" style, doing assemblies, any modifications, painting, etc., in turn; while one is drying, I'm working on the other. I average about 12 hours actual work per model, and the total "production time" for any given one (or two or three) is about a week. My usual procedure is working in the evening while watching a movie on DVD or tape.

The story title is "Iran SAYS Neda's death may be tied to terrorist group".
The key words being "Iran says". Reporting their claims
is hardly advocation of them.
as the story says: "The Iranian government has sought to minimize the impact of her death"
Here's another terrible CNN shill for Iran:
Iranian women stand up in defiance, flout rules
You're seeing what you want to see.

re: #646 Hawaii69
I am seeing exactly what is printed, nothing more or less. I suggest you are not seeing what you don't wish to see.
The single use of the word "says" is the only hint of editorial detachment in the whole report. If CNN wished to present that story in a fair and balanced manner they could have included a statement from any of several pro-reform spokespersons. They did not. To present such a serious issue by simply repeating the Iranian government propaganda without any context is unprofessional at best. It would not be the first time that CNN has been caught co-operating with a dictatorial regime.
