If Glen Beck ends up saying AGW is real, then Ludwig will be doing one of the biggest end zone dances in LGF history. And both those things will be Good Things.

Noo! I don’t want Glenn Beck on the right side of this issue. He’ll just fuck it up and turn the country against the planet. Keep being a denier, Glenn…it suits your stupid persona.

I’m having a hard time following all the craziness with who’s in, who’s out, and what now passes for an orthodox conservative political position. Following Lost is much easier than that - even if you’ve never watched the show from the start.

Sadly, if Beck says it’s real it would likely only be to have ALeX JoNEs or someone on to say the progressive totalitarian neo-fascism commie Obama is making it happen, because he wants to destroy not only Amurka but also the EARTH!1!

You know, I wouldn’t put it past Beck to try and use this as a scam - to draw out who’s on his side or not.

Or - much more likely - he’s seeing a financial angle to his advantage - carbon trading is the new gold.

NPR had this climate change story on this evening during drive time. Part of it has some relation to the conversation here lately about the ‘liberal’ and ‘conservative’ labels.

Belief In Climate Change Hinges On Worldview

..snip..
“People tend to conform their factual beliefs to ones that are consistent with their cultural outlook, their world view,” Braman says.

The Cultural Cognition Project has conducted several experiments to back that up.

Participants in these experiments are asked to describe their cultural beliefs. Some embrace new technology, authority and free enterprise. They are labeled the “individualistic” group. Others are suspicious of authority or of commerce and industry. Braman calls them “communitarians.”

In one experiment, Braman queried these subjects about something unfamiliar to them: nanotechnology — new research into tiny, molecule-sized objects that could lead to novel products.

“These two groups start to polarize as soon as you start to describe some of the potential benefits and harms,” Braman says.

The individualists tended to like nanotechnology. The communitarians generally viewed it as dangerous. Both groups made their decisions based on the same information.

In another experiment, people read a United Nations study about the dangers of global warming. Then the researchers told the participants that the solution to global warming is to regulate industrial pollution. Many in the individualistic group then rejected the climate science. But when more nuclear power was offered as the solution, says Braman, “they said, you know, it turns out global warming is a serious problem.”

And for the communitarians, climate danger seemed less serious if the only solution was more nuclear power. npr.org

I read that Sunday paper where it mentioned that about global warming, but I thought it was talked about here already. One thing this article doesn’t have (that I noticed) was the part where he said he was turning into Jabba the Hutt. He said his doctor said he didn’t think he had seen anyone with less muscle mass, and Beck said, “It’s true. I’m made of pudding.”

From teh “article”:

The kinder, gentler, greener and warmer side of Beck, known as a firebrand conservative, came to light in an interview in USA Weekend, which is distributed through more than 600 newspapers.

That’s the problem, right there. If certain types of conservatives/republicans get angry at Beck for “leaving the reservation” as it were, they only have themselves to blame for not listening to him more closely.

Beck himself has stated he’s a libertarian, he was never on the “conservative/republican reservation” to begin with.

But in a sense it doesn’t surprise me. Beck is a loose canon. You never know which way he’s going to explode. That’s why he’ll never really have the power, or the cult following, of Rush. Rush is horribly consistent. You know he has a completely formed hate-filled philosophy and brings it to bear on every topic. Beck? Not so much. Rush is horribly consistent. You know he has a completely formed hate-filled philosophy and brings it to bear on every topic. Beck? Not so much. That’s why David Frum (wasn’t it?) speculated that Beck might not really believe what he says, whereas Rush definitely does.

Beck believes in Beck.

Yes, but it’s looking more and more like it is a last stand. Now a foe can often be most dangerous right before its downfall as it recognizes its impending defeat, but I think it’s dawning on the SoCons the gay issue is on its way to being lost for them.

Moreover, I really am sensing among Republicans a strong will to accept a broader base. Yes, I know it doesn’t seem that way. But you have to look at races in context. Scott Brown will not be pilloried for his recent support of the jobs bill. He even had the backing of DeMint. DeMint may be far right, but he’s not stupid enough to no know what he was supporting. The New York special election was a case where the person running on the R ticket did not reflect the majority of the districts Republican voters.

The son of a leading Hamas figure, who famously converted to Christianity, served for over a decade as the Shin Bet security service’s most valuable source in the militant organization’s leadership, Haaretz has learned.

Mosab Hassan Yousef is the son of Sheikh Hassan Yousef, a Hamas founder and one of its leaders in the West Bank. The intelligence he supplied Israel led to the exposure of a number of terrorist cells, and to the prevention of dozens of suicide bombings and assassination attempts on Israeli figures.

Islam considers the site religiously important because Machpelah is the burial place of Abraham. They’ve honored it for centuries, building a mosque over the caves, and, unfortunately, forbidding Jews to pray there for at least part of the time Muslims controlled the area. (Not sure about pre-twentieth century.) The father of a woman I know grew up in a Jewish family in Baghdad. His father used to take the trip to Hebron each year to pray near the Tomb of the Patriarchs, but was not permitted to actually go into the complex.

In addition, there’s been a developing trend of Palestinian denial of Jewish connection to various holy and historic sites, plus there’s the land control issue.

re: #133 The Sanity Inspector

It’s the 528,072nd holiest site of Islam, and must therefore be free of the polluting presence of Jooosss.

Machpella is where Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and Sarah and Leah, the progenitors of Judaism and Islaam are buried.

Netanyahu made a dumb decision to turn over Hebron to the Pals the last time he was in office. I get the feeling Netanyahu is trying to undo his error and to incite the Arabs who in turn will incite we, Jews. It is one way to raise Netanyahu’s polling numbers. So, yes, I am cynical as to his motive though I am also glad he is doing what he is doing.

In the Torah, Machpella - within Hebron - was the first piece of land the Jewish people bought in the land of Canaan. It was to be a burial site. The tradition is that one of the first things a Jew is to do when founding a new town is to build a cemetery. Doing kindness for the dead (emet ve chesed) is one of the highest kindnesses one can do in Judaism because the dead can never return the favor (simplistically stated).

The very first place the Jewish people visited after breaking free of Egyptian slavery was Hebron and Machpella - the story of the regalim. They visited Hebron so as to honor their ancestors.

Machpella is important to the Arabs and Islaam in that they too claim to descend from Abraham. The Arabs claim is that Abraham converted to Islaam before he died - even though Islaam wouldn’t arrive for another several thousand years. The Arab claim is that Abraham traveled to Saudi Arabia at one point of his life and purified the kaabah, the big rock in Mecca.

Okay…this one made me chuckle.

We’ve been expecting you, Mr. Bond
Pardon my silent friend with the gun
You are a most extraodinary man
Time and again you have upset my plan
You’re reputation preceeds you
And though Her Majesty needs you,
Put down your weapon and put up your hands, Mr. Bond
We’ve been expecting you, Msr. Bond
You must be weary. Why not sit down?
You’re quite the Bon Vivant, so I’ve heard
You like your martini shaken, not stirred
You’re reputation preceeds you
And though Her Majesty needs you,
Do you have any clever last words, Mr. Bond?
So, Mr. Bond, we finally meet
Here in my fortress retreat
Pity you won’t have time to stay
I admire you perseverence, but this is your last interference
I could shoot you right now, but no!
Hahahahaaaa…there’s a better way!
We’ve been expecting you, Mr. Bond
Looks as if all your luck is finally gone
You single-handedly outwit my guards,
Make love to my woman, beat me at cards
Your reputation preceeds you
And though Her Majesty needs you,
You are facing impossible odds!
Mr. Bond, it’s time for you to die!
Haaahaaahaaahaaahaaa……
Goodbye, Mr. Bond
haahaahaa….
Aahhaaahhaaaa!
AAAAHHAAAHAAAAAAAAAHAAAAaaaaaaa….!!!!

No its more than that. In short, the CT goes that FDR was told that the Japanese were planning an attack, but he refused to take any action and invited the attack to get America behind the war so the US could join in and bail out Papa Joe. The classic-rock CTs were all about the communist influence over American policy. Even the one about Pearl Harbor.

Also, they are not (only) religious zealots. I watched one of the docus on the family, and the kids have learned, almost scarily well, how to balance their beliefs with “getting along with people in the 21st century.” They know what not to say, what will cause problems for them, etc. Part of me thinks that’s great, as they have learned to believe but get along with those who disagree, part of me finds it scary that they have learned such a political game so early.

There is a distant shoestring relative of mine, met him maybe a few times, a real old guy, not even sure he’s still alive, who gave me a book he wrote called “A Guide for Exuberant Living” which what I can figure is a collection of every classic conspiracy theory from WWI, WWII, Vietnam, and the days of the Red Influence, each CT footnoted, annotated and cited like a textbook. Chock full of racism too. A good primer for spelunking into the mind of the classic Bircher CT nut.

Exactly. Nagumo also knew how strong America could be when angered. The problem for Japan was that to back off in China would have meant openly backing down to foreign pressure and that was seen as an intolerable sign of weakness.

right, it get a bit more complicated…but I’m only good for a few sentences…they really did not want a shooting war with the US and the Aussies in the S Pacific but they stupidly forced themselves exactly into that situation….I never heard of a plan to invade Australia, they just wanted to take New Guinea and be left alone…heh, wrong again

re: #253 Irenicum

I agree. back in my undergrad, we ad a similar type visit our school for a fews years going. He would stand between our library and chapel declaring that everybody passing by was going to hell. It woulda been funny if it weren’t for the fact that he often included his wife and kids along for the display. Very sad to see them stand there like zombies as he spouted hate masquerading as love. A Greek prof of mine tried reasoning with him but got nowhere, finally declaring that the guy was beyond reaching.

I’ve read some quite frightening investigative reporter stuff about how Phelps raised his family and also about his general life. This is one disturbed individual.

One of his sons who left forever when he was 18 spoke at the American Atheists convention last year. He’s only been an atheist since 2005 or so, however. His speech is primarily about his father and growing up in that family — highly recommend if you want an inside look at the family dynamics. He’s a monster.

**trigger warning for survivors of domestic violence and child abuse**
atheistnexus.org

This isn’t from that speech, but elsewhere:

The mattock, a close cousin of the pickaxe, is used to dig through tough, earthy surfaces—it loosens soil, breaks rock, and tears through knotted grass. Its handle is a three-foot wooden shaft, twice the density of a baseball bat and its dual-sided iron head is comprised of a chisel and a pick. It was Pastor Fred Phelps’s weapon of choice when beating his children according to his son, Nate Phelps.

“The Bible says ‘spare the rod, spoil the child,’” explained Nate, “and he would be screaming that out as he was beating us.” One Christmas night, Pastor Phelps hit Nate over 200 times with a mattock’s handle, swinging it like a baseball player.

Interesting idea. In some neighborhoods, I can imagine that would be a hip name. The name has all sorts of possibilities - I could imagine Sunra being one of the opening acts. Why is this monster not in a federal prison?

Hasn’t broken any federal laws. He’s also a lawyer who specialises in tying up the legal system. Several of his children are lawyers as well. Everything he does as part of his ‘church’, no matter how morally repulsive, is also protected under the First Amendment.

He and one of his daughters are barred from entering the UK, however. Hate speech laws.

There was an investigative reporter who put together a ton of info on Phelps, planning a book. AFAIK the book hasn’t come out, nor do I know if he even had a publisher, but a lot of the material was available on the web. I’ll see if I can find it.

Also also, IIRC, there was some extremely creepy stuff about Phelps’ homophobia that he dug up. In the early years of his ‘ministry’, before it was reduced to basically his homegrown congregation (his kids). Phelps was pretty obsessed with the sex lives of his congregation (if we can call it that.)
Very Jim Jones kind of stuff. Quizzing the males about their ‘homosexual tendencies’, forbidding them to sleep with their wives, very weird and very Jim Jones-ish. I’ll see if I can locate that info.

He and Gore were once associated.

Phelps supported Al Gore in the 1988 Democratic Party primary election. In his 1984 Senate race, Gore opposed a “gay bill of rights” and stated that homosexuality was not something that “society should affirm”. Phelps has stated that he supported Gore because of these earlier comments. Wikip
At least Phelps is consistent in his hatred. “You once oppressed the same people I do! Bro!”

312 HappyWarrior  Tue, Feb 23, 2010 8:10:41pm

I’ve seen the fact that Phelps was a registered Democrat as justification for the assertion by some on the right that he’s a liberal. I’ve never seen such a bad argument. The guy clearly wants to return to a time period where people would be executed for being gay. Is he a mainstream conservative? Of course not but is he the very definition of far right wing in that he wants to go back to past policies of say the Middle Ages? Absolutely. THe Phelps freaks were actually here since they were pissed off that my college elected a drag queen as our homecoming queen. We also had a guy named Brother Micah here this past fall. Not sure if anyone of you all have heard of him but he basically goes around telling college kids they’re going to hell because some of us smoke pot, voted for Obama, have sex, and condone homosexuality. It’s fun times. I took some pictures of it and there was even a guy who had a sign that said I’m With Satan that stood next to Micah.

mmm. not sure its a job for militia. feels like a policing job. you want to make sure that the drugs (and cartel members) are off the streets in US. a full on invasion of drug members into US territory feels incredibly unlikely.

The first the Mullahs would hear of it would be the sounds of the explosions.

Screw reducing the forces. As screwed up as the minutemen might be (lots of BS about them is “common knowledge”) a real militia is truly needed down there. If I were Governor I would have my state guard doing a lot of practice maneuvers around El Centro and further south.

a couple of weeks ago I drove down the NM bootheel and into AZ…the San Bernadino valley, right along the state line, check your atlas….extremely rugged and remote, but TONS of Border Patrol…some on horseback, some with full auto stuff…roadblocks, mobile IR TV stations….man, you name it….I was very impressed…but nevertheless if a Mex cartel wanted to shoot their way up through there and fan out, they’d be gone, unstoppable

Few publishers would be willing to publish a hostile book about a litigious lawyer. The threat of a suit for slander looms large. Phelps might not win such a suit, but it would still make things unpleasant for the folks targeted by it.

Yep. Phelps himself can’t practice any more, but he has a gigantic history of using the law to file suits that are basically designed to harass others. Plus he has his own home-grown lawyers now— his kids.

The SPLC timeline is useful but it only runs through 2000 — it’s from the Spring 2001 SPLC Intelligence Report.

Hmmm. My opinion would be that “they’re in already.” If the cartel’s objective was to get a number of operatives into the country, there are far easier ways to get people across the border than a frontal assault involving an actual shooting match w/ border patrol. Easier to sneak 5 in at a time (and certainly they have experience doing this).

The result is that this is more of a police operation. We’ve dealt with gangs and drug violence for decades and in many locations, and we should use what we’ve learned to effectively combat what’s already in place.

As for the Americans on the border—that’s an extremely tough position. I would hope that they would act to not put there family in danger, but to alert the proper authorities of what was happening.

Its not a good situation at all. American guns, American money, Mexican drugs coupled with violence, murder, and anarchy for everyone.

Yes, that’s what I’m thinking. There will have been a copy submitted with the divorce paperwork in the county where the divorce was filed, but to obtain access to the copy yourself you’ll likely need to apply to the county where the q-c deed was filed— and I expect that to be the county where the property is located.

Might be possible to get a copy of the deed via the divorce paperwork, but I think unlikely for Tigger’s purposes. (they’ll want the original certified or whatever yadda yadda).

The problem with the minute men, and the major handcuff on local police, is that for everyone one mexican drug operative in the county you have several legal mexican immigrants.

It makes it tough to effectively police, and opens up private citizens who defend their land (per RWC’s suggestion) to their own criminal or civil charges if they act against the wrong individuals. Not to mention the physical harm they might invite upon themselves (or their neighbors) by shooting back against cartel members.

Procure your state’s quitclaim deed form.
Step
2
In the blanks provided, fill out the grantee and the grantors’ names and current addresses.
Step
3
Fill out the legal description of the property. You can get the legal description from your original deed or from the property appraiser’s office. There should also be a place for the address of the property.
Step
4
Sign and notarize the deed. Some deeds only require one or two witnesses, while some deeds require a notary stamp, depending on which state you are in.
Step
5
Record the deed at your county’s recording office. You will have to pay doc stamps on the deed and recording fees. Doc stamps and recording fees vary depending on your county or state.

I dunno. She was giving up her interest in the property to me, not deeding the property back to the timeshare owner. The timeshare is in this state but is 2 or 3 hours away and I don’t think she would have gone down there to file the quit claim.

Try the county where the divorce was filed first to see if it’s submitted with that supporting paperwork (it would have been) and see if 1) you can get a copy of it there and 2) if the copy they’ll give you is sufficient for your legal purposes. Might not be— you might need a certified copy of the original quit claim deed, which would need to be obtained from the county where that deed was filed.

I’d probably contact the lawyer who handled your divorce and ask them first. Just went through some similar documentation bs myself.

I just found the anti-Lincoln speech at CPAC…
Freedom Watch Live At CPAC, Part 1
Guests discuss the nation’s history, decline of civil liberties
[Link: video.foxnews.com…]
Glenn Beck’s backup host, Andrew Napalitano, is the moderator. The crowd cheers when they call Lincoln a dictator and a tyrant. Lot’s of Bush bashing too.

Anyone else find it ironic that the CPAC crowd would label Lincoln and the other founders of the GOP as RINOs?

The problem with the minute men, and the major handcuff on local police, is that for everyone one mexican drug operative in the county you have several legal mexican immigrants.

It makes it tough to effectively police, and opens up private citizens who defend their land (per RWC’s suggestion) to their own criminal or civil charges if they act against the wrong individuals. Not to mention the physical harm they might invite upon themselves (or their neighbors) by shooting back against cartel members.

How can anyone beconvicted of apprehending and holding a person who trespasses on one’s own private property—legal immigrant or not?

Oh, I forgot, private protery doesn’t mean shit anymore.

no one specifically. just was making an assumption of the logical end of using force against Iran.

I suppose that’s the danger of assumptions, but my model is what’s happening in Iraq and Afghanistan. We wound up either standing up or propping up a local government in both places. So we aren’t governing directly, but are on the hook (for $ and for reputation) for the actions of the government.

Air-strikes, and then enforce a no fly zone. Blockade, shut off their Gas, their economy. They would be in no position to build new plants and the threat would be removed.

Scott Brown’s vote yesterday to block the GOP filibuster of the $15 billion jobs bill has cost him nothing less than his own Facebook page. Tea Partiers have not only hijacked the Wall of his Fanpage—and the Wall of his daughter’s Fanpage—they’ve also uploaded a stream of tasteful anti-Scott Brown protest images. Herewith, a slide show of some of the fan photos uploaded in the last 24 hours. Original captions have been preserved, although a picture is of course worth a thousand randomly selected and misspelled words.

Slideshow at link.

re: #480 EastSider

no one specifically. just was making an assumption of the logical end of using force against Iran.

I suppose that’s the danger of assumptions, but my model is what’s happening in Iraq and Afghanistan. We wound up either standing up or propping up a local government in both places. So we aren’t governing directly, but are on the hook (for $ and for reputation) for the actions of the government.

the situations are not comparable….same with Iraq and Afghanistan…we have every legit reason to declare war in Iran if we wanted to…Iran has to go down somehow, someday….it’s going to happen one way or the other

what of their stated intention of liquidating Israel?…just dismiss that?

Well, personally, no. BUT, I think Israel can take care of themselves. If Isarel asks our help, well, that would be different.

My point is more to nuclear energy. If they are truly trying to develope nuclear energy, they need to be transparent about it. I don’t know how we can deny them a “planet friendly” form of energy when we are hoping to develope it ourselves and it seems to be all the rage these days.

Do I believe that is what they are doing with all the uranium? Doesn’t matter, they need to PROVE it to us and the rest of the world. Unless,we have hard evidence to the contrary, I don’t know how we can justify any military intervention.

I suppose it is a bit unfair we don’t allow suicide bombers to travel without interference. The Mullah regime has sacrificed any ‘right’ to nuclear power they may have had.

not disagreeing. But here’s the downside of that strategy:

you’ve just killed 1000s of civilians (10,000s by their count). you blew them up, starved them to death, and prevented the kids from getting medicine. You’ve just created a whole new generation of Iranians and sympathetic Middle Easterners who hate America. Strikes would likely only delay the Iranian bomb. Not even Israel knows where all their sites are and they keep their research backed up too. We might delay them for years, but we would not shut them down completely. And we might well rally their public around the mullahs.

Delay? When is Saddam’s bomb going to finally make its appearance? Or any of his chemical weapons?

Don’t doubt the ability of the US to shut down that nuclear program for as long as necessary. Whatever it takes. Who cares? The US still has troops in Japan and Germany, they haven’t built any nuclear weapons. Who are the Iranians?

You also have to use, from time to tome, some of your force, so that the bad guys think there is a possibility that you might use it on them.

This is why peace rallies and peace symbols make war more likely by the way; they convince the actual bad actors that it is safe for them to go ahead and start something.

I think the average Iranian is right to view the west suspiciously. The west has done terrible things to them.

And no, this does not excuse Iran’s government’s behavior. it just explains why anti-American rhetoric holds their attention.

re: #500 Bagua

Rinse and repeat. You’re afraid they will hate America? Bit late for that.

the casualness of “rinse and repeat” as a phrase describing the endless loss of life is a little jarring.

Call me liberal. But I think the root cause of the Iranian threat, and the root cause of terrorism is anti-American sentiment. And you’ll never be able to bomb people until they love us. There will always be someone left who is so incredibly pissed off and motivated that he’ll commit as large an act of violence as he is allowed. So yes, you can neuter their nuclear program, limit tactical weapons flow, stop gun transfer, and say that knives are illegal. But at the end of the day theres going to be a number of extremely angry people who are out to kill as many Americans as possible.

I don’t have a “right answer.” And I agree that war and violence is sometimes justified. But I don’t think “bomb them into submission” is a workable solution for the future.

Two students have been shot at a middle school in the same town where the Columbine shootings occurred, including a 14-year-old. Investigators have a suspect in custody.

WE DEPOSED THEIR LEADER AND INSTALLED A DICTATOR

We did that. Us. America and the UK.

I guarantee you, that if Iran had some sort of cosmic power, had George Bush deposed and installed a Mullah in the white house, it’d make an impression on you. It might perhaps color your opinion of Iran! And your children’s opinion of Iran.

And if you care less about historical grievances, and yet say in the same breath that if america does X then the Iranian people will love us forever, isn’t that basically a completely uninformed opinion? if you don’t care about recent history, how are you coming up with any sort of informed opinion about Iran’s people and their trust of America?

so what…that was then, it’s a new world and a new paradigm…if you don’t draw the line somewhere you get sucked into a never ending spiral of blame and revenge…just bomb the facilities and be done with it…all this blather about past grievances is a waste of breath

The people of that town have to be feeling it. When you’ve had one tragedy I think in the back of your mind you think your odds of having it strike again have to be way down there. But no. No guarantees.

Just horrible. Imagine the trauma of hearing the news bulletins for all the people who lived through Columbine and may have lost friends or family — or kids — then. Nightmarish.

So what? That is old history. The whole region was carved up. What about the Spanish/American war or the Civil War? WWII is over as well and the German and Japanese are allies.

I guarantee you, that if Iran had some sort of cosmic power, had George Bush deposed and installed a Mullah in the white house, it’d make an impression on you. It might perhaps color your opinion of Iran! And your children’s opinion of Iran.

When you start talking ridiculous what is the point? Whatever. The nuclear weapons and the terrorism are their choice. If their is some historical grievance, we can talk about it during the surrender talks.

And if you care less about historical grievances, and yet say in the same breath that if america does X then the Iranian people will love us forever, isn’t that basically a completely uninformed opinion? if you don’t care about recent history, how are you coming up with any sort of informed opinion about Iran’s people and their trust of America?

I’ve spoken with many Iranians, read comments and articles from many Iranians, and followed them for decades. My opinion is informed but I’m happy to consider new information.

But as to will they love or hate us, that is not the key issue to me. I’m not looking to be loved, though that is nice, I’m looking to be free of the threat of nuclear war and state sponsored terrorism. I’m for stopping the Iranians from creating hell on earth.

Those in power in Iran want one thing - for Israel to be wiped off the face of the earth. They hate the West - America and everyone else in the West (OK maybe not Venezuela). There is nothing we can do to make them like us.

This will not end well no matter what. Who would you prefer it end badly for - us or them?

I don’t really see this as a zero sum game. I don’t take it as fact that iran will absolutely attack Israel. I think it’s rhetoric. I think it’s a possibility, and that we should definitely prepare for the possibility, but I don’t accept at all the premise that it’s a certainty.

I’ve been thinking really hard about quitting for a long time.
I found a good book, and have read it many times.
“Teh easy way to quit smoking”, I think it’s called.
(I’m at a friends house, on a MAC for the first time.
Thing is kinda cool, but don’t tell?)

Anyway, I’m travelling & will have a week of not smoking, before returning home. I plan to do whatever it takes, to keep up being “quit”. I think it helps, that I have been exercizing.

So, thanks for the support!

its not the existing terrorists i’m worried about. its the future terrorists. there’s millions of young men who haven’t yet been turned. and those represent thousands of more enemy combatants and hundred more american soldiers dead (and how many more dollars spent) trying to achieve peace.

its a vicious cycle.

We are not talking about terrorists as such, but nuclear weapons and things like missiles being supplied to terrorists. The individual terrorists are a separate problem, it is the state sponsors of terrorism that create existential threats.

We can no more stop all individual acts of terrorism than we can stop people like the nut who flew into the IRS. The point is to deprive them of nuclear weapons, not to win their love.

I’m not talking about blame and revenge. I’m talking about facts. Simple facts, cause and effect. Why do they dislike us? because of what we did. Therefore, the premise that they will instantly love us, for any reason? is ludicrous. And that premise is being advanced right here.

Like I said above, if a US president was assassinated by Iran when you were in your 20’s and a brutal dictator beholden to Iran’s interests ran America for many years, you’d remember, and you wouldn’t dismiss it as a past grivenace and you wouldn’t talking about how it’s a “new paradigm”. There is no new paradigm. These people, they’re not stupid. They remember what we did. And it seems like conservatives right here on this blog want to wave it off and dismiss it, as if it was a gaffe or a little diplomatic brouhaha.

Our interests are realpolitik, as national motives usually are But we shouldn’t be surprised when we ruin a country for their resources, install a maniac because the maniac is friendly to US interests, and then the people in that country are suspicious of our motives!

Agree. Mathematically, the # of terrorist attacks and deaths on US soil looks like this:

# deaths = [(# of terrorists) * (lethality of attacks)] / (US Ability to Defend)
= (N*L)/D

So you’re arguing that we should minimize the Lethatlity. A perfectly admirable aim. I’m saying that that will increase N and might not net out to any increase in our overall safety. We have to do both.

Also note that increasing D (another debate we’ve had) moves the number of deaths towards 0, but this has implications for our own personal freedoms.

Not necessarily. I assume we would announce our intentions first, give them a chance to disarm voluntarily. Then the US would plan, and execute their missions with the least amount of civilian casualties possible. We could even give then a couple days to evacuate every area before we level it. The US, and Israel for that matter, will always do the utmost to avoid killing innocents.

Lets flip the scenario:

Lets say that in 15 years, our economy is so in the shitter that we’re no longer the world player that we were, and someone like China has emerged as the unilateral position of power.

They demand that we account for and dismantle all of our existing nuclear weapons, because we’ve a history of attack first warfare and we can’t be trusted to secure our own nukes given our destabilization.

China says it will airstrike our likely nuclear facilities and stop all shipments of their goods to us (think about THAT) unless we comply.

What does a President do then? Does that constitute an act of war?

fuck up a very small part of it…the nuclear site….I gotta go but lets say this…

if we let Iran achieve their bomb grade fuel, which they openly admit to, they have the delivery system, it can be assumed that the warhead tech has already long ago been sold to them by the Norks or Pakis, and we consider their passionate, relentless, overt declaration to destroy Israel (and the Saudis?)….if all this is taken into consideration, then why are we better off to do nothing because of some legit grievance from decades or longer ago?…is it rational to allow this to happen because of something that happened in the past, with different players in a different political world….how far do we go to allow history to dictate the actins of the present?….

America’s Worst Governor Has America’s Worst Sexual Assault Alibi

Meet Nevada Governor Jim Gibbons (R-Skeezeball). A former playboy model is suing him for allegedly sexually assaulting her in 2006. Gibbbons’ defense? He hasn’t had sex in 15 years.

The federal civil suit was brought by Chrissy Mazzeo, a cocktail waitress who says that Gibbons assaulted and groped her in a parking lot after spending hours drinking at a Las Vegas restaurant. The alleged assault never resulted in any criminal charges, but on February 5 of this year, the governor was deposed for four hours by Mazzeo’s attorney, Bob Kossack. During the deposition, Gibbons claimed that he hasn’t been sexually intimate with any woman since 1995, and that he’s “living proof that you can survive without sex for that long.”

This is highly unlikely because 1) Gibbons has recently come under fire for sexxxy late-night texts on Nevada’s dime with a friend. and 2) Mustang Ranch.

Obviously, Gibbons is just angling for a pity fuck to go along with the huge settlement he is going to have to pay when he inevitably loses this case.

Stalking App Can Give Creepy Strangers Your Phone Number

A Swedish app called Recognizr lets you point your smartphone camera at someone and retrieve their online profiles via face recognition. You don’t even have to know the person, unlike with competing apps.
The technology isn’t quite stalker friendly yet; only people who have opted in can be recognized, and the code only runs on Android smartphones. But we figure it’s only a matter of time before someone writes a no-holds-barred, recognize-anyone version for the massive iPhone platform, and makes a bundle in the process. After that happens, there will be no need to make up fake phone numbers for creeps in bars — the creeps will already have your contact info. Progress.

That reminds me of the school which was allegedly monitored students via their laptop webcams at home. Disturbing.

I was just reading about that last night— super creepy and invasive. Definitely appears the school did something very, very wrong, if the account I read was accurate.

Yea I’m with you but I’m going to wait a bit and see what shakes out. If the school did snap a picture with that laptop webcam and use it to discipline a student, it’s all over for them I would imagine.

Long. I think that’ll change next week, though. Jim-ski is close to finishing up collecting his legal docs, then he’ll fly over to NYC to wait with me. So that will be cool, at least!

Yeah, that’s what I’d heard about how the laptop cam issue came to light. We’ll see.

Ok free this may seem random but I’ve been meaning to ask you a question. It seems you perform quite a bit of research on various topics and I’m wondering which information sources you consider to be the closest to “objective”.

That can be a slippery topic as the definer affects what objective means but I’m speaking of sources that impart information with the least amount of “messenger taint”.

Just curious, thanks man.

re: #602 albusteve

fuck up a very small part of it…the nuclear site…I gotta go but lets say this…

if we let Iran achieve their bomb grade fuel, which they openly admit to, they have the delivery system, it can be assumed that the warhead tech has already long ago been sold to them by the Norks or Pakis, and we consider their passionate, relentless, overt declaration to destroy Israel (and the Saudis?)…if all this is taken into consideration, then why are we better off to do nothing because of some legit grievance from decades or longer ago?…is it rational to allow this to happen because of something that happened in the past, with different players in a different political world…how far do we go to allow history to dictate the actins of the present?…

I’m out like the Shah

This isn’t actually the point I was addressing. Strategic reasons why we should hit Iran pre-emptively are beyond my pay grade. I believe they’re dangerous, I believe we should keep an eye on them, and I believe they’re angry at us for real reasons. These are all real truths, and they can all coexist! Just because I believe that we fucked Iran up and they have every right to hate us like poison, doesn’t mean we should let our guard down.

I don’t accept the premise that it is CERTAIN they will hit Israel. I believe that Iran is engaging in rhetoric about hitting Israel because it’s politically viable. Many people here seem to think Iran’s leadership are suicidal. I don’t. Is it possible? Sure. Is it probable? I don’t believe so.

The point that I was actually addressing is, you cannot talk about the predicted behavior of the Iranian people while dismissing their very recent negative history with the USA and Great Britain. If you dismiss that, you have no informed opinion regarding how the Iranian people will view us.

648 Cato the Elder  Tue, Feb 23, 2010 10:59:48pm

You are also quite correct. And no doubt that segment of the Iranian population who chant ‘death to America’ and join the Basjid are not going to love us post strike. My view of them welcoming liberation applies more to the Urban population, the young people, the minority religions, ethnic minorities, gays, and oppressed groups.

Also, you are quite right there is a history, it is also a new situation and we live in the present and must move forward. Historic grievances need to be settled and not be the source of unending hostility, especially by those playing with nuclear power and ballistic missiles.
