Great timing!

Al-Qaida’s American-born spokesman on Sunday called on Muslims serving in the U.S. armed forces to emulate the Army major charged with killing 13 people in Fort Hood.

In a 25-minute video posted on militant Web sites, Adam Gadahn described Maj. Nidal Hasan as a pioneer who should serve as a role model for other Muslims, especially those serving Western militaries.

Hopefully, they will extradite this guy to the US. If he’s still a citizen, though, he’ll almost certainly have to be tried in civilian court. So be it.
It’d be good to know just who in Pakistan was protecting him until now….

Traitors should be severely punished.

re: #2 MandyManners

Will he be extradited to America and who will have jurisdiction, the feds or the military?

He’s an American citizen.

But he could be tried for treason, which if I recall aright carries a potential death penalty.

Popcorn?

This could mean that we’re getting close to Osama bin Laden — if he’s actually alive, which I still think is doubtful.

Wouldn’t it be something if Barack Obama managed to do what George Bush couldn’t do in 8 years — catch bin Laden?

If that happens, the spinning from the right might knock the Earth off its axis. Massive cognitive dissonance will ensue.

Interesting. Treason is extremely hard to get a conviction on; the bar is set very high. The Founders, familiar with England’s wretched abuse of such charges, wanted to ensure that such abuses weren’t even possible here.

It would be satisfying to see a rare treason conviction in this case, but if prosecutors decline to pursue it in favor of obtaining a conviction on other, easier to prove charges, I totally understand their reluctance.

Anyway, this is excellent news, if true. I wonder how long he’s been in custody, and what he’s had to say so far?

I highly doubt that Hannity, Beck, Limbaugh, or any of them would give Obama credit for anything, even catching Osama bin Laden. They’d chalk it up to Bush/Cheney policies working instead.

The recent elections put a new government in power, for one thing. For another, the US has made some quiet rumblings about maybe siding more with India if Pakistan wasn’t willing to secure it’s borders and hinterlands near the Afghanistan border, where the Taliban maintain a safe refuge.

70 mj  Sun, Mar 7, 2010 10:55:16am

From today’s MEMRI:

Adam Gadahn Praises Nidal Hasan, Calls for More Lone Wolf Attacks’

On March 7, 2010, Al-Qaeda’s media wing Al-Sahab released a new 25-minute video from Adam Gadahn titled “A Call to Arms.” Adam Gadahn, also known as ‘Azzam Al-‘Amriki, is an American citizen who has joined the Al-Qaeda leadership in the Waziristan-Afghanistan region and features regularly and prominently in the organization’s propaganda.

Gadahn begins the video with praise of the Detroit and Khost attacks, both in late December 2009, which he collectively characterized as “a series of moral and material blows” to the Crusader West. He moves on quickly though to the topic of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan, whom he describes in glowing terms (“a pioneer, a trailblazer and a role model who has opened a door, lit a path, and shown the way forward for every Muslim who finds himself among the unbelievers…”). Gadahn holds up Nidal Hasan as an exemplary figure for his loyalty to Islam and Muslims in defiance of his unbeliever commanders, and for having struck at a sensitive target in the heart of America.

Gadahn then uses the example of Nidal Hasan to call on other Muslims in the “Crusader West,” and especially in the U.S., Britain, and Israel, to undertake lone wolf attacks. He advises his listeners in particular to focus

on targets that will do serious economic damage to these countries, and uses the example of the 9/11 attacks to show that such attacks need not necessarily employ conventional firearms.

The video also mentions “Muslim-only concentration camps in Illinois, Bagram, and elsewhere” - apparently a reference to the proposed transfer of Guantanamo Bay prisoners to the Thomson Correctional Center in Illinois.

The stories I’ve seen sort of hint that he was captured some time ago. This is pretty typical - you don’t want the other side to know you’ve got one of theirs until you’ve pumped him for all the intelligence you can get, because they’ll change their plans and scatter the moment they know or suspect. It wouldn’t surprise me to learn that he’s been held for quite some time, and whatever actionable intelligence he might have had has already been exploited.

re: #88 Walter L. Newton

I’m under the impression if you fight for a enemy of the US, you can loose your citizenship status. Is he still consider legally a US citizen? I ‘m trying to Google the laws/rules, not finding a clear answer.

Here it is…

obtaining naturalization in a foreign state (Sec. 349 (a) (1) INA);
taking an oath, affirmation or other formal declaration to a foreign state or its political subdivisions (Sec. 349 (a) (2) INA);

entering or serving in the armed forces of a foreign state engaged in hostilities against the U.S. or serving as a commissioned or non-commissioned officer in the armed forces of a foreign state (Sec. 349 (a) (3) INA);

accepting employment with a foreign government if (a) one has the nationality of that foreign state or (b) an oath or declaration of allegiance is required in accepting the position (Sec. 349 (a) (4) INA);

formally renouncing U.S. citizenship before a U.S. diplomatic or consular officer outside the United States (sec. 349 (a) (5) INA);

formally renouncing U.S. citizenship within the U.S. (but only under strict, narrow statutory conditions) (Sec. 349 (a) (6) INA);

conviction for an act of treason (Sec. 349 (a) (7) INA).

travel.state.gov

But I don’t know if you can loose it by proxy, after a fact.

Just as long as they are caught, tried and locked away for life.
Civillian, military, makes no dif to me…though the feds seem to do a better job of getting convictions then military trials do.

They do a great job..Look at all the Convictions Law & Order gets on almost no evidence..

slightly OT…for those with a TV on in the background in addition to whatever else they’re doing, CNN is going to broadcast an Amampour interview with Mosab Hassan Yousef, a son of one of the founders of Hamas who later turned double-agent for Israel, converted to Christianity, and now lives in California if i’m not mistaken.

He has a book coming out, or this wouldn’t be as interesting to me…

For those of us who view this as a war situation, as opposed to criminal justice, I view this as a mixed message. The fact that some non-citizen radical islamists are tried and convicted in our civilian courts (and I am glad they are convicted) does not make it the right policy. The point I am trying to make is that non- citizen radical islamists don’t deserve access to our criminal justice system. By keeping them in the military justice system we acknowledge the unique belligerent nature of this threat both current and future.

re: #75 Walter L. Newton

And I already asked in a comment above…

“So… what kind of trial should/can/could he get… military or civilian? He was a US civilian… but evidently went to work for a foreign fighting force. Is he a prisoner of “war?”“

I really don’t know the implications of his activities and how he would/should be handled.

Does anyone know, or have an opinion?

The first step will be to have him extradited. I believe the Pakistanis are responsible for the operation that led to his capture. He’s their prisoner, and I’m sure he has information they would like to extract.

Assuming he’s ultimately forked over the the US, I really have no preference at all where he is tried. Well, maybe a slight preference for a civilian court, with it’s open door policy, which gives as much assurance as possible that a fair procedure took place. But either way, civilian or military, works for me.

Note that he’s already been charged with treason. That charge, if brought to trial, will be in whatever jurisdiction issued the charges. I’m pretty certain that was a civilian court.

Given the sudden string of successes, I wonder what changed Pakistani minds from protection to interdiction? Threat of cutting off US funds (bribes) or increase of US funds (bribes)? These developoments roughly follow blowing up the CIA operatives some months ago. I would like to think it is the threat of reduction and perhaps rising aQ threat to the very structure of Pakistani gov’t.

Maybe part of it was leaking the fact the CIA was seeking permission to use the drones to attack know hide outs in urban areas. Better to go in and get them that lose some civilians and property.

We should also raise our glass to Pakistani intelligence. Pakistani army and government incentives do not align with ours every time. Bush essentially coerced Musharraf into being our ally. Since Gadahn is a US Citizen (I think by birth), then I have no problem with him being tried in civilian courts. For treason, and, hopefully, with punishment being death penalty.

Hell no.

Put him through the legal system, by the book. Do everything the way it’s supposed to be done. When he’s convicted (assuming, but it’s a valid assumption), put him in the same type of shit-hole prison the rest of us are sent to. Don’t make him a Special Case. Let him spend many, many years living in that shit-hole, among the worst people humanity has to offer. Let him spend every single day of the rest of his life having a highschool drop-out prison guard literally looking up his ass with a flashlight on a daily basis. He’s young; that could be a very long time. Then remind him that the American way really does work. Everything he hated treated him fairly, honestly, and justly. He broke his end of the social contract, and now he gets to pay. Remind him that this is the martyrdom he sought.

(That’s also why I prefer civilian courts to military tribunals for most other terrorists as well.)

Assuming they’re still alive, if they’re smart they aren’t communicating directly with anyone at all, and using only the most tortuously convoluted methods to send messages if the need arises.

Conversely, if they’re dead - a consummation devoutly to be wished - all involved on the good guys’ side should take pains to conceal the fact, and use every effort to hunt down the guys trying to make contact with them. maybe even a bit of spoofing to draw the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th tier guys out to try to consult with the boss.

I agree. It comes up often in Texas with all the death penalty politics. We average killing someone every other week for most of the last several years, and due process is pretty quick - typically between several months and a few years, almost never 20 like the hippie states. I’m 36, so life in prison for me is ~40 years. If it was I who was convicted (let’s say falsely just for giggles) of a major crime, I’d choose death without hesitation. There’s hope of an overturned conviction in many many years -for someone who can’t afford good attorneys - just as there is hope of winning the lotto, imho. It’s a fantasy for professors and college kids to talk about in class, not so much in the real world.

From TLWJ:

Gadahn’s capture was first reported in the Pakistani press; he was not directly named, however. Geo News identified the captive al Qaeda leader as Commander Abu Yahya Azam while Dawn identified him as Abu Yahya Mujahdeen al Adam. Adam Gahdan’s nom de guerre is Abu Azzam al Amriki.

“The Pakistani press often incorrectly reports the names of foreign fighters arrested in the country, especially Arabic noms de guerre,” Arif Rafiq, the editor of The Pakistan Policy Blog, told The Long War Journal.

Gadahn was likely detained in the Sohrab Goth neighborhood in Karachi, Rafiq said. “Sohrab Goth is a major Pashtun area in northern Karachi,” he said. “Many Mehsud tribesmen live there.”

Karachi again, which makes a lot of sense if the shura is fleeing the Northlands due to the campaigns there, as well if they are fleeing the country entire.

re: #140 sandbox

Why should tax payers have to pay for his upkeep for 40 years?

Let’s say it costs $1 million a year to incarcerate him. That’s surely far more than reality, which I seem to recall is more like $50k - $75k, but we’ll go for the high end. Let’s say he’s in prison for 50 years. That’s a total of $50 million bucks.

There are more than 100 million taxpayers, but we’ll use that as our baseline. So the total cost per taxpayer works out to 50 cents - total, for his entire incarceration. A penny per year.

I’ve got a whole pocketful of change I’ll happily toss in, for those who don’t figure this is a bargain. Hell, with advances in medical science over the next half century, and the right kind of sentence, we might be able to keep him in there for a whole century. Plenty of time for him to ponder his decisions.

Al-Qaida calls on US Muslims to attack America

Al-Qaida’s American-born spokesman on Sunday called on Muslims serving in the U.S. armed forces to emulate the Army major charged with killing 13 people in Fort Hood.

In a 25-minute video posted on militant Web sites, Adam Gadahn described Maj. Nidal Hasan as a pioneer who should serve as a role model for other Muslims, especially those serving Western militaries.

Just got here. HALLELUJAH!! Got the bastard alive too.

I agree that they are probably closing in on bin Laden, thanks to increased cooperation from the Pakistanis and quite possibly to some innovations that cannot yet be discussed in public.

Since Gadahn is a citizen and has already been indicted in federal court, he will certainly be tried by a civil court. With any luck he’ll get the needle before I die of natural causes.

Ok let’s pretend we are UBL and Zawahiri for a second or two. We know that Obama is bombing the crap out of everything in Both Waziristans and sometimes other places if it even smells like AQ or Taliban from 50k feet.

We know that many old allies have fallen, and there aren’t any totally safe havens in the frontiers anymore.

If we are in either Peshawar, Karachi, or Quetta in an exurban compound we can feel the hunt closing in.

So where do we go next? Do we get the heck out of Pakistan? Do we head to Kashmir, Chechnya, Somalia, or Yemen if we do? Do we try for disguise and go someplace totally unexpected like UAE Venezuela or Brazil?

There aren’t many places of egress that aren’t welll watched at the moment - with the recent election problems and demos as well as the Jundullah bombings crossing via Iran doesn’t seem appealing unless you have a clear cut deal, and you know that the Pakistani authorities are going to be watching Taftan…. So is it a long trek to Srinagar, or boat, plane, train or auto out of Karachi?

Regarding numerous comments above—the gist of which is that if Gadahn was given life imprisonment, he would be tortured and beaten, etc by the other prisoners. So life imprisonment, in his case, is preferable to the death penalty. I do not think our prisons should be places where the prisoners are subject to beating by the guards and other prisoners.

I’m in Texas, too. You’ve probably noticed the alarming number of people who have recently been released from Huntsville after DNA evidence proved them innocent. We’re not talking about procedural technicalities. We’re talking about scientific proof that the person on trial did not commit the crime of which they were accused and convicted. It’s not unreasonable to assume that similarly flawed prosecutions have lead to unjust executions.

People love to castigate lawyers as a bunch of malevolently dishonest bottom-feeders (a sentiment with which I don’t necessarily disagree), but somehow that distrust is suspended for prosecutors from the DA’s office. There are corrupt and/or stupid police, prosecutors, judges, and juries. In my opinion, a person can be trusted, but people cannot be trusted.

See why I’m against the death penalty?

Of course competent and honest law enforcement is preferable, but I’m saying I’d rather get the nonsense overwith and take the lethal injection, if it was me, and I was innocent. I may be in the minority on that.

There’s a local pol in Dallas who is a big player in the “Innocence Project” that raises funds for DNA testing…whose name escapes me. He was on Colbert’s show once. If you know local Dallas politics, know this. John Wiley Price hates this guy, which is all I need to know to love this guy. So far, he’s only been able to test a few hundred convicts. If you’re innocent and in prison, the odds are you will rot there. I’ll take the quick exit.

My guess is the wingnuts will complain about whatever trial arrangements are made, lawyers appointed, judges etc. The Neo-con thing is pretty freshly dead on the right and the Alex Jones conspiracies about the War on Terror are still taking hold on the right. Give them another year or so and the Tea Parties will be claiming these arrests are false flag operations to justify World Government.

I agree, I suspect by time we get to start of election season 2012 (which will be after 1st q 2011) that the Tea partiers and Republicans in general will go full bore anti war.

Good plan. I guess crucifixion in the Capitol parking lot might not sit well with certain religious leaders though.

Even as he was about to be arrested he published praise for his fellow traitor, the Ft. Hood Islamofascist terrorist mass murderer.
For a treasonous scumbatg like him a firing squad would work just fine for me.

Force of habit, I think. You follow the procedures, no matter how looney they become in the face of an execution.

Probably correct - there’s so much ritual that comes to be built up around executions that I suppose this is just our addition to “tipping the headsman,” the last cigarette, etc.

In fact, if I had to predict the wingnut spin, it would be this:

2) Obama doesn’t get any credit, it was all our military. (temporary amnesia about CiC, etc)

How about a variation on that where Obama gets some credit, but only for motivating the Pakistanis by being so incredibly weak on terror.

Hot Air commenter:

It does seem that the Pakistanis are doing a better job of rounding up the terrorists hiding in their country.

My take is that after the election of Obama, knowing that he is weak, they knew that they couldn’t count on the support and help they need from him.

Since the terrorists have designs on taking over the Pakistani government and so get control of their nukes, they are smart enough to see that they can’t trust Obama to have their backs.

I’m not a big fan of psychological analysis of political issues but this article from Psychology Today is interesting….
We Need to Have Empathy for Tea Partiers

Paranoid beliefs about Obama and the government promulgated by the ultra-right have a similar genesis and meaning. In the Times story about the tea-party movement, the writer describes how most tea-party activists are not loyal Republicans. “They are frequently political neophytes,” he writes, “who prize independence and tell strikingly similar stories of having been awakened by the recession. Their families upended by lost jobs, foreclosed homes and depleted retirement funds, they said they wanted to know why it happened and whom to blame.”

They began listening to Beck, reading the Federalist Papers, books by Ayn Rand and George Orwell, and started visiting radical right wing websites. The Times writer then makes a crucial observation: “Many describe emerging from their research as if reborn to a new reality.” In other words, like my patients, the tea party folks find in their paranoid views about politics a narrative that “explains it all,” that reduces their sense of helpless confusion, and that channels their feelings of victimization into ones of self-righteous militancy. They go from passive victim to active agent, from guilty to innocent, but all at the price of distorting reality into one full of malevolent conspiracies.

The payoff is that they are no longer confused. They are reborn and now, thankfully, have the “answer.” And that answer is that big forces are hurting and enslaving them.

It’s worth a read for those curious about the irresistible attraction of anti-government conspiracies.
Also found this interesting…..

I have never been able to help a paranoid patient even a little bit by arguing with his or her view of reality. Not one bit. The only way I have been able to make any headway is use our relationship to provide real experiences that have a shot at providing an alternative and more satisfying “solution” to their underlying fears. Only then can I begin to offer a counter-narrative, one that acknowledges their pain and innocence, but enables them to more accurately identify its sources and, therefore, its antidote.

What’s done is done, but I’d rather know that he’s in the day room, utterly and completely unable to do anything about the fact that Barak Obama is President of the United States. For years and years and years and years.

McVeigh was a guy who was so pissed off at what he thought was “The Government” that it was, in his view, totally okay to murder hundreds of men, women, and children that were not in any way responsible for the things that pissed him off so much.

So yes… to me, that warrants decades in a shit-hole far more than an appointment with a needle.

This bit certainly fits the Glen Reynolds piece linked earlier:

For new tea-party members, however, the drift toward paranoia is facilitated by the right-wing media machine that offers several ready-made narratives perfectly designed to help its consumers clear up their confusion, understand their helplessness, absolve them of any blame, and offer a way out. The conspiratorial alliance of business and government, a growing tyranny intended to disenfranchise, disarm, and exploit ordinary citizens, secret pacts to overthrow the constitution, etc. all currently led by an un-American, godless, colored, elitist, contemptuous, foreigner—Barack Hussein Obama. A grim and frightening picture of the world to be sure.

Psychologically speaking, however, it offers relief from helplessness and a sense that things are falling apart. It offers a sense of cohesion and identity based on certainty, a commonality of interests, innocence, and even martyrdom. While the world of the tea-party’ers is filled with danger, it is a danger mitigated by moral certainty, clarity of purpose, and a definable external enemy.

Well you know, back in the day they couldn’t tell the stance on islam from political belief in general. Once the difference started showing, they were shocked and appalled.

I don’t know LGF from much before the last election. I think there were just a lot of shocked people around after 9/11.

you guys are so crude.

Why risk changing history, when all you have to do is go back and take some video of the sermon on the mount (presuming it happened) or maybe Caesars entrance into Rome?

Temporal paradoxes are not my concern… Besides, I’ll go back in time, again, and prevent myself from changing history….while still keeping what I pilfered from the now alternate time line.

I didn’t! I knew that tunnels were involved in the Claudian aqueduct, but didn’t know that they were the majority. Makes a ton of sense tho’.

One of the coolest things when I was in Rome as a kid was seeing a hunk of aqueduct built (or repurposed) into the side of a building. Or at least that’s what I thought it was at the time :P

Inferno.

Premise is a sleazy SF writer offs himself accidentally & wakes up in hell. He learns that everyone can eventually make it to heaven via Dante’s route in The Comedy and is guided there by a jolly good fellow who turns out to be non-other that fun loving guy Benito Mussolini. Ok writing marred by N&P’s usual love of authoritarian governments.

So would you rather be the innocent who dies in prison after 40 years or die in 6 months at Huntsville?

Those who have been released, even after years and even decades of false imprisonment, seem to unanimously disagree with you.

From the transcript:

YOUSEF: Exactly. This is absolutely right. It’s ideological conflict. It’s ideological war. In other wars, it’s a war between two gods, the god of the Koran and the god of Torah or the god of the Bible. So people are victims of this war.

YOUSEF: After 10 years of working against terrorism, this is what I realized as a Christian, that our problem with terrorism is not with bunch of terrorists in Afghanistan mountains or in Gaza Strip or any other places. Our problem is with their ideology. Our problem is with their god, the god of the Koran.

I know this is very dangerous, and I know this is — this can offend many people, and I — I want them to understand that my problem is not with them. They are my family. Muslim people are my family. When I think about them, I think about my dad, I think about my mother. My problem is with their god.

Like it or not he makes clear that his intent is to extrapolate from his own experience to paint ALL of Islam. He’s quite fluent in English, if he wanted to broadcast a more nuanced position I’m fairly sure he would have.
