Really odd behavior.
Why do they think this is the guy from the SUV?
Does he match a description from somebody?
Or are they just going on the fact that he changed his shirt?

They must have more. This video doesn't show him nearer any vehicles than anyone else walking by. In fact, there are people a LOT closer to the cars in the video

I'm sure. Security cameras for businesses and from ATMs.

13 Cannadian Club Akbar  Mon, May 3, 2010 9:06:06am

I also wonder if they know the identity of the guy and are possibly following him.

14 lawhawk  Mon, May 3, 2010 9:06:24am

That's footage taken from Shubert Alley, which runs behind 1515 Broadway and connects 44th and 45th streets. Here's a street view of 45th street (see the google street view) about where the SUV was located. Imagine walking about 100 feet and crossing through the Alley on the left. That's what this guy is claimed to have done.

From the look of it, he's about 6 feet tall, and balding. Short/close cropped brown/black hair, but doesn't appear to have facial hair.

When I was growing up in the UK, the IRA would periodically carry out similar (though more professional) attacks in the British mainland. This with the more or less overt support of a non-trivial segment of the US population.

I write this listening to Jacques Brel - "Il nous faut regarder". Recommended.

21 lawhawk  Mon, May 3, 2010 9:09:02am

38 lawhawk  Mon, May 3, 2010 9:17:08am

We're not talking about a lack of cameras here (although there are calls for still more). Police are reviewing hundreds of hours of tape from multiple videos. And figure that they've got to track back the vehicle from the destination to its origin. That means going block by block - time consuming, especially if not every block has coverage - because depending on the camera angle, you might get a glimpse of the driver and any potential passengers/cargo etc.

50 _remembertonyc  Mon, May 3, 2010 9:20:39am

while viewing the suspect on the surveillance camera provides a modest bit of comfort, it does not change the fact that but for the ineptitude of the would be bomber, many could have been killed and hurt. so we should not smugly feel that the "system worked," because it really didn't. same deal with the underwear bomber over Detroit. The system did not work. What did work was alert citizens (in the spirit of Todd "Let's Roll" Beamer) saving the day. The "system," whatever it may be, can probably never be expected to work 100% of the time.

I watch Law and Order UK. The biggest difference in that show vs the NY show is the use of CCTV cameras for the investigation part. It's much more prominent in the UK show and it's much more creepy. For instance they regularly rule people out as suspects by going to the CCTV cameras by their homes and seeing the guy go in and this time and come back out at this time. They much more easily track a suspects movement through the CCTV security system.

Yeah it was the 'home' part that really struck me as different and creepy. The emphasis on the camera system in that show is huge. In the NY shows security camera footage is used but it plays a more supplementary role and isn't depended on like by the UK police in it.

I know they are both fictional accounts but after seeing a few episodes I looked into the reality and yep it seems to be pretty true to what actually goes on.

Sounds like the Simpson's episode from last night.

My oldest daughter came to visit here a few years ago. My 6-year-old grandson looked out at our big backyard and asked me "Is it OK to step on the grass?"

Heh, when I was that age, I saw my first subway carwithout graffiti and was deeply disturbed by it! NYC can really give people a whole different set of norms.

Heh. I remember playing whiffle ball, punchball, baseball, and other games in the street - the pothole is 1b, the manhole cover is 2b, the car door over there is 3b, and home plate is this manhole. Good times! :)

Of course, touch football isn't the same if you're not getting blocked into a parked car... /

I used the parked cars to "pick" the defender. He would be running backwards to keep an eye on me, and I would lead him into the bumper of a 69 Buick then veer off and catch the WINNING TD PASS!!

Really odd behavior.
Why do they think this is the guy from the SUV?
Does he match a description from somebody?
Or are they just going on the fact that he changed his shirt?

Seriously. Taking off your sweatshirt on a hot day in New York makes you a suspect?

One hopes they have a bit more reason than the "evidence" in that video for releasing it to the public.

Remember the guy in the Atlanta bombing? His life was ruined because the cops couldn't wait to get somebody's picture out on the airwaves.

re: #47 Stanley Sea

Nope. It's not strange at all. Shubert Alley is a shortcut between 44th and 45th and is regularly used. In fact, two theaters share it and there are usually pretty big crowds there when shows let out or queue up. If you're trying to get between the blocks, Shubert Alley lets you avoid pedestrian traffic on Broadway - which used to be especially bad when MTV would do their street spots like TRL live. Big crowds would block pedestrians from getting through.

re: #88 Jadespring

Yeah it was the 'home' part that really struck me as different and creepy. The emphasis on the camera system in that show is huge. In the NY shows security camera footage is used but it plays a more supplementary role and isn't depended on like by the UK police in it.

I know they are both fictional accounts but after seeing a few episodes I looked into the reality and yep it seems to be pretty true to what actually goes on.

Even worse, the cameras have become a crutch for the UK police. Soon they may not be able to solve crimes with out them.

drudge is already calling it "the taliban bomb", linking a fox news item

According to Fox News, in a 1 minute video allegedly released by the Pakistani Taliban, the group says the attack is revenge for the death of its leader Baitullah Mehsud and the recent killings of the top leaders of al-Qaida in Iraq.

Images of the slain militants are shown as an unidentified voice recites the message. English subtitles are at the bottom of the screen.

According to the AP, an unidentified speaker on the tape also says the attack comes in response to American "interference and terrorism in Muslim Countries, especially in Pakistan."

The claim could not be immediately confirmed andhe tape makes no specific reference to the attack nor does it mention that it was a car bomb or that it took place in New York City.

A text in gold letters on a black background at the start of the video congratulates Muslims for the "jaw-breaking blow to Satan's USA." As the speaker recites the message, images of the slain militants referred to flash across the screen.

They are investigating the license plates, which don't match the VIN, and the vehicle owner.

The Connecticut license plates on the SUV matched a Ford; according to WFSB, "The investigation led agents to a scrapyard in Stratford and a shoreline car dealership. Police said the Pathfinder could have been sold from Thomas Anthony Auto in Bridgeport at some point. The SUV's vehicle identification number led officials to the dealership... Police were also at Kramer's scrapyard in Stratford in a search to hunt down the license plates, which they said came off a pickup truck."

Well, he's obviously a "person of interest" for some reason. If he's innocent, I hope he comes forward and clears his name fast.

This is all just another great big "wait and see" scenario at this point. There's not really that much one can say about it - unless one recognizes the guy.

I should clarify that I have no problem with important public spaces, government buildings, and terrorist targets being watched by cameras. It's when they are usedeverywhere and as a substitute for actual policing that I beleiver there is a problem.

Hi Cato! I'll second that. It's one of my favorite movies - and the books were wonderful. Crowe worked for me as Jack Aubrey, but I had a little trouble with Paul Bettany as Maturin (who in the books is quite homely). Bettany is a little too handsome for the role.

Jaunte, thank you!

We've sold only 10 copies thus far (Volume 1 sold more than 100 copies the first 2 months!)

The proceeds from this sale ($5 per book) go to support LGF and Soldier's Angels.
The price is a mere $16.51, plus about $4 for regular shipping, so right around $20 for a great book, great recipes, great artwork, great writing (Cato!) and hilarity! It's a very good deal for the price.

Click my nic anytime for the cookbook blog, where there is a button you can click to purchase.

Come on people! Only 10?

Mine has shipped, I will report once received and brag about it, hopefully that will stir some purchases.

re: #172 Cato the Elder

Why the odd price? Was 1651 a significant year?

Because $16.51 is exactly $5 more than the lulu printing cost.
And my head can deal with multiples of 5 much more easily than it can multiples of $5.48.

Did you mean $4.49?

Where do you suggest reading for the best up to the minute?

I've been checking CBS News & Google News...

Hi Cato! I'll second that. It's one of my favorite movies - and the books were wonderful. Crowe worked for me as Jack Aubrey, but I had a little trouble with Paul Bettany as Maturin (who in the books is quite homely). Bettany is a little too handsome for the role.

(There's talk about a sequel, but we'll see.)

I would love a sequel.

Agree about Maturin, but every lead in the movies today has to be pretty.

I was thinking about that while obsessively watching the first two seasons of "Dexter" last week. There is not a homely person in there except for the bad guys and the occasional background stroller. You would think that the entire city of Miami is buff, young, pretty and slender, including the skanks at NL meetings.

Well, there ya go, you see what sort of confusion would reign if Reine had to deal with something other than a nice even 5?

Maturin, in the books, is described as so homely that no one can fathom Diana's sexual obsession with him.

really? I think Jennifer Carpenter is a great actress but she's not hawt. I can't think of anyone in the PD who is terribly attractive, come to think of it...

I wish the film makers had been able to include the musical scene of the first meeting of Aubrey and Maturin.

What about Masuka?

Homely in a pretty way.

And Batista is heavy, but in a pretty way.

The story was gripping, but I don't think I'll watch anymore. Aside from the general gag-inducing "we're all so pretty" phenom, they committed a cardinal sin in my book - showing a closeup of a security camera that Dexter later has to worry about, and assuming the audience is so stupid that they wouldn't recognize it as a security camera without making it go "blink-blink-blink" and "bleep-bleep-bleep".

Like the "hidden" time-bombs in dumb-ass Bruce Willis thrillers.

Then again, the would-be bomber in Times Square apparently left his flashers going, so what do I know?

You can select PayPal or Credit Card as the payment type once you have your order and delivery method selected.

Thanks--it worked. Note that Lulu is not well-linked inside, it wasn't able to find Vol1 after Vol2 was basketed. They did combine shipping on checkout.

NYC DOT has a series of cameras in the area. NYC NYPD has its own cameras. Independent businesses and buildings have their own. Heck, there are 13 different views of Times Square on live cam.

Are we arguing something that we essentially agree on?

re: #177 Cato the Elder

Well, he's obviously a "person of interest" for some reason. If he's innocent, I hope he comes forward and clears his name fast.

This is all just another great big "wait and see" scenario at this point. There's not really that much one can say about it - unless one recognizes the guy.

I think - not know, but think - that he got picked up on other cameras starting with exiting the vehicle. I was browsing earlier and saw a picture of a Pathfinder with a person in a grey hoodie just outside the vehicle with the front passenger door open. I don't recall at this time if it was of THE pathfinder or just a coincidence, and can't find the site on a quick search to doublecheck.

If - and I'll emphasize that word IF - this is true then the reason we're seeing this picture is it's the one time we get not only a somewhat clear shot of him but it's the instant he does something a bit distinctive, going from grey hoodie to orange short-sleeve shirt. It's something witnesses might recall.

Charles;

Wondering if you could take a quick look at this, a picture trying to go "viral" on twitter and facebook in an attempt to smear protesters of the idiotic Arizona anti-immigrant law;

See this thread;
[Link: www.alipac.us...]

The sign supposedly says;
"Health care jobs no-taxes house food you owe us America! We will shoot more police in Arizona till we get free!"

If you do a quick search on "we will shoot more police in arizona" you'll see how the pic is being sent around all the usual suspect sites.

I think the sign looks obviously edited, the letters just seem to clear, and at the bottom the angle doesn't seem to match. Was wondering what you thought.

Sorry for posting it off topic here, not sure how else to get a message to you.

Thanks

206 lawhawk  Mon, May 3, 2010 12:59:25pm

The Washington Post reports that there are tentative links with a foreign terrorist group, quite likely in relation to a pair of videos released by the Pakistani Taliban taking responsibility/credit for the failed attack and warning of more to come.

Another U.S. official, recounting a conversation with intelligence officials, said, "Don't be surprised if you find a foreign nexus. . . . They're looking at some tell-tale signs and they're saying it's pointing in that direction."

Officials cautioned that even if the investigation points toward an international link, rather than domestic or anti-government groups, that does not mean al-Qaeda or another terrorist organization is necessarily involved.

The emerging picture came as police and federal investigators searched for a man in his 40s whom surveillance cameras caught changing his shirt in an alley and looking over his shoulder near where the car was parked about 6:30 p.m., and another person seen running north on Broadway from the area. New York City Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly also said detectives had spoken with the registered owner of the car but revealed no details other than that the man was not a suspect.

It's way too easy to shrug this off as a failed attack by a novice to let our guard down, and as always we have to stay vigilant against threats.

207 lostlakehiker  Mon, May 3, 2010 3:45:13pm

The evening news is reporting that a Pakistani native, naturalized citizen, just back from a long trip to Pakistan, is a person of interest. Also, that an Islamist group registered a site the day before the attack, and immediately upon news of the attack, posted a video they had prepared, praising the attack. That this group is from CT, the state where the car for the bombing was bought.

The dots are connecting. The attack was the work of an Islamic terror group.
While technically you could say that it was domestic terrorism, that's a technicality.

208 really grumpy big dog johnson  Mon, May 3, 2010 8:13:51pm

I'm very late to this discussion. It's a little surprising that there was so little discussion of this person and how he looked.

My impression wasn't of a big bald spot, but rather of a skull cap. And the guy looks a little too sinuous and athletic to likely be middle aged.

Looks to me like somebody more like in his 30's, possibly a runner.
