Another Commie Plot?

Wheels within wheels

This week I wanted to ban some obnoxious referrer spambots that were linking to sites peddling Cialis, so I started writing a regular expression to block out any referrers that had *cialis* in their URL.

Then I realized this would also block out any referrers that had “socialist” in their URL.

Another commie plot? Make of it what you will.

Here's your commie plot!

Modifying Human Embryos to Thwart Disease Weighed in U.K.

Should parents concerned about passing on genetic diseases to their children be allowed to swap DNA with a donor’s?

A U.K. regulatory agency is posing the question to the public starting today as the government explores whether to allow genetic modification of human embryos to prevent some diseases. The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, or HFEA, will report findings to the Department of Health in March, the agency said in a statement today.

The procedure, which isn’t available in the U.S., involves transferring healthy nuclear DNA from one fertilized human egg with unhealthy mitochondrial DNA to a donor embryo with disease- free mitochondria. The approach may prevent genetic disorders such as learning disabilities, heart disease and diabetes. Serious forms of mitochondrial disease affect one in every 6,500 children.

[...]

With the religious anti-abortionists believing there is something magical in "DNA", and with their belief in the mysterious powers of "baby juice", will genetic engineering of humans ever come to these shores?

The British/Irish version of the Internationale sung by Alistair Hulett. Enjoy!

**LYRICS**
Arise, ye workers from your slumber,
Arise, ye prisoners of want.
For reason in revolt now thunders,
and at last ends the age of cant!
Away with all your superstitions,
Servile masses, arise, arise!
We'll change henceforth the old tradition,
And spurn the dust to win the prize!
So comrades, come rally,
And the last fight let us face.
The Internationale,
Unites the human race.
So comrades, come rally,
And the last fight let us face.
The Internationale,
Unites the human race.

No more deluded by reaction,
On tyrants only we'll make war!
The soldiers too will take strike action,
They'll break ranks and fight no more!
And if those cannibals keep trying,
To sacrifice us to their pride,
They soon shall hear the bullets flying,
We'll shoot the generals on our own side.
So comrades, come rally,
And the last fight let us face.
The Internationale,
Unites the human race.
So comrades, come rally,
And the last fight let us face.
The Internationale,
Unites the human race.

No saviour from on high delivers,
No faith have we in prince or peer.
Our own right hand the chains must shiver,
Chains of hatred, greed and fear.
E'er the thieves will out with their booty,
And to all give a happier lot.
Each at his forge must do their duty,
And we'll strike the iron while it's hot.
So comrades, come rally,
And the last fight let us face.
The Internationale,
Unites the human race.
So comrades, come rally,
And the last fight let us face.
The Internationale,
Unites the human race.

You don't think the song is apropos considering the topic of the thread?

19 darthstar  Sun, Sep 16, 2012 6:08:23pm

Finally, some political porn worth reading...

As the Tampa convention drew near, Wehner, now a “senior adviser” and blogger for the campaign, was laboring under an unusual constraint for the author of a high-stakes political speech. He was not invited to spend time with Romney, making it impossible to channel him fluently.

Nevertheless, Wehner came up with a draft he found pleasing, including the memorable line: “The incumbent president is trying to lower the expectations of our nation to the sorry level of his own achievement. He only wins if you settle.” It also included a reference to Afghanistan, which was jettisoned with the rest of his work.

Instead, eight days before the convention, at a time when a campaign usually would be done drafting and focused instead on practicing such a high-stakes speech, Stevens frantically contacted John McConnell and Matthew Scully, a speechwriting duo that had worked in George W. Bush’s campaign and White House. Stevens told them they would have to start from scratch on a new acceptance speech. Not only would they have only a few days to write it, but Romney would have little time to practice it.

Disarray...How I love that word in this context.

Modifying Human Embryos to Thwart Disease Weighed in U.K.

With the religious anti-abortionists believing there is something magical in "DNA", and with their belief in the mysterious powers of "baby juice", will genetic engineering of humans ever come to these shores?

I believe there was a court case in Spain recently where the hoped for parents of IVF decided to abandon a PRE implantation embryo because tests showed it to have a serious genetic flaw, I forget the term while typing, but with a certain miserable life and death by 35 or sooner.

In such cases some embryos are always discarded, even without testing, but in this case religion said that since the test was done and the decision was made, that constituted abortion. I believe the courts ruled for the parents to be since there was no implantation, but the principle of religion imposing, not because of circumstance (since there was no real pregnancy) but because of knowledge seems telling to me. They wanted to impose man made suffering on life, because man knew it would happen.

It's the kind of article that will have Mitt Romney waking up with an icky bottom on Monday morning, and god help any staff stuck on the bus with him...he's going to back up the plumbing in a big way. Yes, one of his guys, Stevens, is getting labeled the fall guy for all that's wrong with the campaign, but the writer does take pains to recognize that Mitt is very involved in all campaign decisions...he sees himself as the decider (where have we heard that term before?).

If you don't want to read it, just watch MSNBC tomorrow...they'll pull the juicy bits out at some point in the day and discuss them until they become meaningless...but that is their core weakness...not knowing when to let an idea sink in on its own.

Quintessential commie super-plane, the Tupolev ANT-20 Maxim Gorki.

This was the largest landplane of the time (1934) and was built expressly as a propaganda vehicle. Equipment included a film lab and projection room, broadcast radio equipment, a printing press, and a lighted sign for conveying the Stalinist message to the masses below. It was supposed to have 6 engines but these lacked the predicted power so two more were added in a push-pull arrangement above the fuselage. Its wheel spats were reputed to be the largest ever made.

This aerial media leviathan came to a bad end during a film shoot on May 18th 1935. It was flying in close formation with a small I-5 fighter to contrast the sizes of the two planes. The pilot of the I-5, comrade Blagin, decided on his own to liven up the proceedings by doing a barrel roll around the ANT-20. It wasn't wide enough and Blagin crashed into the top of the larger plane's left wing. Both planes disintegrated, killing all 44 people on the ANT-20 along with Blagin (which was probably just as well for him) and 3 people on the ground. Soviet propagandists coined the term "blaginism" to refer to an arrogant and reckless disregard for authority. In American aeronautical circles this is known as "hot-doggery."

Interesting to imagine what might have happened had Stalin's purges not decimated those aircraft's design teams. With additional heavy bombers able to fly great distances, the USSR might have been able to mount regular bomber raids on Poland and maybe even Berlin. That might have shortened WWII by a notable amount.

I was listening to an interview with Kevin Smith recently and the topic of his career arc came up. He's an astoundingly grounded person and acknowledged that he only had a handful of good movies in him. He used the quote "A beautiful woman dies two deaths" which I found a pretty enlightened perspective. He was a pioneer in indy film but doesn't seem very interested in being a godfather or intellectual leader of the movement. Clerks could never be made today within the studio system, it's just too controversial. But we are rapidly approaching a breaking point where movie and music studios vanish, TV networks are gone and with that comes ever increasing the ineffective advertiser boycotts by political/religious activists attempting to silence others through economic pressure.
I think we're due for another renaissance in art, music and movies by artists free from the burden of corporate funding (and economic boycotts) that comes through self publishing. I think it's just around the corner.

A growing number of conservatives are blaming Stevens for advocating a campaign of caution, one that puts all the emphasis not on how good Romney could be but how bad Obama is. “Credit for this fog goes to that inner circle of Romney advisers who never liked the Ryan pick and have reasserted their will over a candidate who is naturally cautious,” conservative columnist Kimberley Strassel wrote in Friday’s Wall Street Journal. “In the la-la land where adviser Stuart Stevens presides, Mr. Romney wins by never saying a single thing, ever, that might rock a single boat, ever.”’

[Link: dyn.politico.com...]

It's the most galling thing about the new Mitt, other than his newfound penchant for lying about and distorting Obama's record (his attacks on Obama last week just being the most recent example).

It's no longer even news when Mitt flip flops on an issue...he's trying to be everything to everyone, not offend anyone, and in the process becomes nothing to anyone. He's like Oakland: there is no "there" there. It's one thing to be a non-ideologue moderate pragmatist (like Obama). Another thing entirely to backtrack every time you may have offended anyone, especially in the conservative base, and then turn around and offer up a new position. Thus the constant alterations in his policies, and the lack of any specifics. One example among many: Romney argued 6 months ago that the earth was warming and human activity plays a role; a couple days later, after broadsides from RW talking heads, he "modifies" his position to take out the A in AGW.

What's with the right wing film trend?

I have been wondering that myself. I strongly suspect the surprisingly good box office for the Dinesh D'Souza film was driven at least in part by the same "mass buy" tactics that right wing groups use to keep their books on the best seller lists.

I know a women who's the spittin' image of Nurse Ratched. She went on to marry a good friend that I've known since we were five. Never said a word about the resemblance to said friend.. never will. That's my jumping in from the sidelines comment for the night. Now, after attending a very christian wedding this evening, feeling like the 'old guy' at the reception table, I'm going to enjoy a New Glarus Moon Man No Coast Pale ale or two and read some comments.

Looks like there's some expansion on reports that Roberts changed his mind in the lead-up to the release of the Obamacare decision.

New Book Details John Roberts’ Health Care Switch

The Bush-appointed jurist was caught in a bind, forced to choose between rebuking the conservative movement and risking his — and the court’s — legacy. A key factor that led to his decision to side with the court’s liberal wing, Toobin concluded, was the insistence of the four conservative justices on nullifying the health care law in its entirety.

“The four conservatives had overplayed their hand with the chief justice,” he writes. “By demanding that Roberts kill off the entire health care law, they prompted him to look for some kind of middle ground. … [Justice Antonin ] Scalia was enraged at the chief. … With all the changes, the cross-references among the various opinions became confused. … By a vote of 5-4, the Court would uphold the heart of the Affordable Care Act.”

Long story short, the "no-compromise" mentality of the wingnuts met the pragmatic need to avoid destroying the Court's credibility, and lost. It explains why so many folks think the dissenting opinion reads like it should be the majority opinion.

We all kinda knew that the word was gonna come out, though most of us expected it to be after the election, when the slew of "tell-all" books started hitting the shelves. For Politico to actually report on the chaos behind the scenes while the election is still going on, at least to me, signals that the base is openly considering bailing on his ass in the face of an inability to do more than reach parity in the polls.

Obama's in office, and there's an election coming up.

Also, many evangelicals have completely sworn off Hollywood movies as the satanic work of sodomites and other god-hating liberals. So Rocky Mtn. Pictures and other small studios are making more low budget movies with conservative themes of Christian redemption in an attempt to bring morality back to America and return it to the hyper-religious Christian nation it once was (in their imaginations).

It won't help if the search word is the first or last word on a line.
A lot of languages use a '^' to signify the beginning of a word, and a '$' for the end.

For example /^cialis$/ would match that word, but not socialist however it may not respect case sensitivity. So you could try /^[Cc][Ii][Aa][Ll][Ii][Ss]$/ which would match any letter in any case.

However you will still get arse holes who will substitute the letter 'l' with the numeral '1' or perhaps swap the i and a, yet our mind will still interpret the word correctly for the most part.

Regexing, can be difficult.

i've been reading conservative forums today. These people are really crazy. They actually believe Obama is evil and deliberately trying to destroy the country. They believe all kinds of bizarre stuff and they don't believe any of the polls. They think Romney is way ahead.

BTW..so does that clown Hugh Hewitt. i happened to listen to his show one day last week and he was saying the polls are all wrong, it's going to be a Romney landslide.

I see that Bart Ehrman is working his schtick successfully:

Bart Ehrman speaks to sold-out crowd on Jesus's existence

[...]

Ehrman, a self-professed cynic of the New Testament, said he doesn’t normally dispel the beliefs of atheists. But a growing group of mythicists, people who publicly deny the existence of Jesus, has caught his attention, he said.

“Mythicists are quite angry at what I’ve said and are attacking me mercilessly on the Internet,” he said. “They think I’m a terrible scholar and have no idea what I’m talking about.”

Ehrman aimed much of his lecture at the sector of atheists and agnostics who argue that there is no archeological evidence of Jesus and no written pagan sources from the first century that even document Jesus’ existence.

“It’s not that useful of an argument because we don’t really have archeological evidence for anyone who’s ever existed,” Ehrman said.

[...]

This is evidence of someone who is going flakey - when they start spewing wild claims that are clearly wrong.

We have plenty of archeological evidence of "important" people of the past. Right now the big archeological news in the UK is this:

Richard III dig: Hundreds visit Greyfriars site in Leicester

Genetic testing will be done on the remains to try and dispel any false positives. Perhaps Ehrman would like to claim that Richard III isn't "important"? Then what about digging up and identifying mummies of Egyptian pharaohs?

Ehrman has been acting increasingly erratic in his public proclamations. I wouldn't be shocked if he goes even farther.

re: #296 researchok

He;s a lot like Erich von Däniken.

Well, I wouldn't go that far.

But I get the impression that he is still haunted by his early fundamentalism. First in his academic career he makes a name for himself separating from said fundamentalism, and now he goes around to radio stations and lecture halls and sells himself as the one who is truly proving Jesus (of the Gospels) really did exist.

The problem he is demonstrating is trying too hard to sell books, and he does that by being quite coy in his interviews and to which audiences he addresses.

I don't blame anyone for trying to make money by marketing their expertise, and as he's a NT historian his source of income, outside of his teaching salary, is to sell books and lectures about the NT.

But his popular talks are hardly scholarly, as he demonstrates by his unmeasured statements.

298 researchok  Mon, Sep 17, 2012 1:31:34am

re: #297 freetoken

Maybe the von Däniken reference was an over reach but here in the triangle he is a very polarizing figure.

His talks are very contentious and he plays on that.

Word is UNC-CH isn't too happy about his public lectures either, for the reasons you allude to.

An aspiring rapper sent tweets about driving drunk moments before he and his friends died in a car crash, police said.

According to CBS News, Erwin McKiness, who used the names Jew’elz and Inkyy sent out a tweet that said “Drunk af going 120 difting corners #F**kItYOLO.”

YOLO stands for “You Only Live Once.”

McKiness, despite the texts, was a passenger and not the driver.

After running a red light, the car crashed into a wall. McKiness had sent a final text saying ”Driving tweeting sipping the cup (expletive) yolo I’m turning it up.”

She's got two great kids, works for a chain of nursing homes, has a college degree and is a devout Catholic. She just organized a charity motorcycle ride to benefit Alzheimer's research(my husband and a couple of his friends rode in it) She is however badly misinformed about politics because her dad(also a nice guy, would do anything for a neighbor in need)is convinced Obama is a communist and he spends way too much time watching Fox news. She comes from a really close family, literally, her parents and siblings all live in a little cluster of houses right next door to mine on about 15 acres. So what her mom and dad think carries alot of weight.

Anyhow, her new thing is to post stuff on Facebook about how the government is forcing Catholic employers to fund abortion coverage. Does anyone here have a link or source that I can show her that she won't reject because it's a liberal site(like ThinkProgress, etc)? I'm not going to call her out on her page,I'm going to send her the info privately. She's smart,I think she'd be open to the truth. Maybe.

NEW PORT RICHEY — The Pasco County Sheriff's Office named a third suspect Sunday who deputies say helped a mother and son beat a man with a baseball bat and hammer.

Vanessa Musson teamed up with 40-year-old Bobbie Jo Curtis and Curtis' 16-year-old son, Bryan, to attack a man Friday at Moon Lake Estates, the Sheriff's Office said.

Bobbie Jo Curtis had recently met the 44-year-old man on a dating website and moved into his home with her son.

That's sort of tricky, because if you use only the definitions accepted by hard-core Catholics, they are being forced to do something they can convince themselves is seriously against their rules. The force, of course, is a schedule of fines. The fact that many Catholic institutions already provided such insurance is lost on them. So is the fact that Quakers are taxed to support drone strikes. To convince her you would have to prove that a large part of her hierarchy is arguing dishonestly. You're not likely to win this one.

Benghazi emerges as key recruiting ground for al-Qaida, US intel analysts say

Counterterrorism experts inside and outside the U.S. government argue that it is not an exaggeration to suggest that the region around Benghazi has become a crucial wellspring for al-Qaida that rivals even its historic breeding ground -- Saudi Arabia.

"For more than two decades, a slice of eastern Libya near Benghazi, dominated by conservative bastions like the town of Derna, has served as a prolific incubator for local extremists, a surprising number of whom have surfaced as high-profile foreign combatants in conflicts ranging from Afghanistan, Bosnia, Chechnya, Iraq and now Syria," he said.

"Several of these combatants have taken leading roles in front-line paramilitary organizations, including al-Qaida," Kohlmann added.

It seems it was a bad choice for an ambassador to visit the area with little or no security. It seems to have been a well known al qaeda hub for quite some time.

And making promises you aren't sure you can keep is the way to ruin.

Can you explain how Romney is going to keep his promise of tripling defense spending, keeping the proportion of taxes paid by upper income earners the same as it is now, lowering taxes on the middle class (which means, therefore, lowering them on the upper income earners as well) and reducing the deficit?

That's reasonable. Trying to just push a tax plan through Congress seldom works, the lobbyists want their say, even if only to show their employers how relevant they. Moreover, the makeup of Congress will be crucial to what kind of bargain can be struck

No, it isn't.

They're kicking the can down the road, avoiding any specificity whatsoever.

If they furnished a baseline or any type of detail, we'd know where Congress would be working from. As it stands, no one knows and they won't tell us.

Yes,but Dark,if what they have planned policywise was so awesome and going to help the country do better then why not lay out specifics? This Secret Squirrel nonsense leads people to think either a)they've got nothing or b)what they have is pretty heinous and is a gift to their rich buddies. Money matters are up to Congress, but as President you sure as hell can tell people what you think would work and what you'd like to see Congress put into place, along with a basic explanation of just how your plan would work.

Nothing to see here

Move along

WApo gives Susan Rice 2 Pinocchio's
Was the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Libya planned?

The administration obviously wants to play down the possibility of a planned attack because that would raise broader questions about whether U.S. intelligence and embassy security in Libya were adequate. But Rice’s comments strain credulity, especially after Libya’s president declared without a doubt that the attack was planned.

We also acknowledge being suspicious when an official begins by citing “the best information we have to date” because that suggests other information, such as that gathered by the Libyans, is not being given the same weight. (Rice said FBI agents were not even in Libya yet.) Elsewhere in the interview, Rice used carefully hedged language — “We do not have information at present that leads us to conclude that this was premeditated” — that suggests the administration is straining to avoid an obvious conclusion.

Given that this is a fast-moving story with confusion about basic facts, we are going to start out relatively light on the Pinocchios. We may adjust depending on the information that emerges in the coming weeks, but at the moment the publicly available evidence stands in stark contrast to Rice’s talking points.

Romney HQ should have thought of that months ago. Instead, they're running on vague rhetoric and dog whistling.

If Mitt Romney is such a smart business man, he knows that an investor pitch is only as good as the detailed business plan supporting it. You have to have numbers, you have to show your work, and have specific answers for people. You can't just throw out a suggestion and hope that people will sign on out of the kindness of their hearts.

Except Obama didn't say that. What you put in quotes wasn't said, and it's pretty dishonest of you to represent it as if it were.

A prediction was made, not a promise.

Since you seem confused about the difference, let's make a simple analogy for you.

If I promise to pay you back a $1,000 after you loaned it to me by the next month, and then I fail to do so, I've broken a promise.

if I tell you I'll be able to pay you back next month since I'm expecting to be able to get a job by using the money to buy a sweet suit and some elocution lessons, but then I don't get hired, I've certainly disappointed you, and you still don't have the $1,000, but there could a reason why that happened, and I didn't break a promise.

In the case of the stimulus, it was much too small and comprised far too much of tax cuts, put in there at the insistence of the GOP. The models underestimated the severity of the crisis. You can certainly call it a failure of Obama's that their prediction was off, and a bigger failure of the GOP's that they sabotaged the stimulus to such a great degree based on their new Ayn Rand style economics.

The statement by Romney, on the other hand, is just obvious bullshit. It is not something in the power of a president to ever promise, and it's rather obvious that that's the case.

Pretty good analysis from Josh Marshall this morning...

...that leaves us with the new demand that Romney finally get specific with his various policy proposals and run the sort of Movement Conservative campaign the Ryan pick seemed to foreshadow. Again, not easy. Romney hasn’t been cagey about nearly all his policy proposals by accident. Whatever their policy merits they’re unpopular. His tax plans call for dramatic tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans and substantial tax increases for the middle class. That’s a very hard sell in a system in which middle income people still get to vote. The initial Bush tax cuts were designed to give everyone tax cuts, albeit leaving the most generous ones at the top. That was smart politics. Cutting at the top while you have tax increases for the vast majority of voters is a sure loser.

Turning Medicare into a voucher program? Not popular.

Republicans can say Obama represents socialism and a slow descent into the awfulness of the German welfare state until they’re blue in the face. But voters get that Obama is pushing a basically pragmatic approach to taxes and spending. Polling has always shown this. His approach to social insurance programs is more popular as is his support for letting the Bush tax cuts expire for upper income earners. A campaign focused on actual policy details would only drive this point home. Don’t take my word for it — listen to the Romney campaign itself. The refusal to offer any detailed policy proposals speaks for itself.

The Facts
Interestingly, the information to disprove this claim exists on the Romney campaign Web site. Far from being anything that Obama said, the Romney campaign acknowledges that this 8 percent figure comes from a staff-written projection issued Jan. 9, 2009 — before Obama had taken the oath of office. Of course, the campaign still spins it as a negative.

I'll look later for the quote from one of his pressers

It doesn't say what you say it says. Here, let me quote it. And as a bonus I'll post the rest of the paragraph that happens on page 5.

The table shows that we expect the plan to more than meet the goal of creating or saving 3 million jobs by 2010Q4. There are two important points to note, however:

First, the likely scale of employment loss is extremely large. The U.S. economy has already lost nearly 2.6 million jobs since the business cycle peak in December 2007. In the absence of stimulus, the economy could lose another 3 to 4 million more. Thus, we are working to counter a potential total job loss of at least 5 million. As Figure 1 shows, even with the large prototypical package, the unemployment rate in 2010Q4 is predicted to be approximately 7.0%, which is well below the approximately 8.8% that would result in the absence of a plan.

Second, as emphasized above, there is considerable uncertainty in our estimates: both the impact of the package on GDP and the relationship between higher GDP and job creation are hard to estimate precisely. In light of the substantial quarter-to-quarter variation in the estimates of job creation, we believe a reasonable range for 2010Q4 is 3.3 to 4.1 million jobs created.

Not 6.7%, 7%.

Not a promise but rather an estimation, a prediction which includes an open statement of uncertainty.

The generator works independent of shore power. A UPS system senses when a facility loses shore power, switches the facilities power to a bank of batteries (that are constantly charging while shore power is available) the batteries work until the generator cranks up and takes over (usually within 5 minutes)

As long as you have diesel fuel you can run on generator indefinitley. It even charges the batteries just in case

Just like the Taliban in Afghanistan makes use of insider attacks, makes use of IEDs, largely speaks to their inability to regain any of the territory that they've lost. So they resort to those tactics. And the same thing is true for al Qaeda, they're going to resort to these kinds of tactics, because in many ways I think they have lost their voice in the Middle East. And one demonstration of extremists, any more than a Ku Klux Klan demonstration in the United States, is not necessarily reflective of what the rest of the country feels.

Again, all that tells us is that there is a facility there, which is already known

The unknown is what's going on in it

Once politicians determine a site is a potential target, the object for the military is to figure out how to F it up as much as possible when the order comes.

I think if the Iranians actually wanted to preserve this place for long, they would have let inspectors in by now. By keeping it a mystery, they almost assure its destruction.

'Non-Libyan link' to riot that killed ambassador Chris Stevens

THE attack that killed the US ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens, was carried out by members of an extreme Islamic militia in contact with an al-Qa'ida organisation based outside the country, the de facto head of state says.

A Benghazi militia, Ansar al-Sharia, had communications with al-Qa'ida in the Islamic Maghreb last Tuesday in which they discussed an assault on the US consulate that night, said Mohammed Magarief, the president of Libya's newly elected national congress.

Even so, their backup power may not be enough to run all of their systems for an extended period of time. Hence while the centrifuges may not simply shut down due to lack of power, the Iranians would still need to shut them down properly to conserve power.

Not at all

What you do in a situation like that is shut down all non critical devices. Lights, A/C in non critical areas, anything else that draws current that's not essential to the centrifuges

She said this? "represent the mainstream of contemporary Islam"

I balked at that one too but here's the context...

The Muslim men and women (and yes, there are plenty of women) who support—whether actively or passively—the idea that blasphemers deserve to suffer punishment are not a fringe group. On the contrary, they represent the mainstream of contemporary Islam. Of course, there are many Muslims and ex-Muslims, in Libya, Egypt, and elsewhere, who unambiguously condemn not only the murders and riots, as well as the idea that dissenters from this mainstream should be punished. But they are marginalized and all too often indirectly held responsible for the very provocation. In the age of globalization and mass immigration, such intolerance has crossed borders and become the defining characteristic of Islam.

She is talking about Muslims in predominantly Muslim countries. Most of these countries (even in American liberated countries like Iraq, Afghanistan) Sharia is enshrined in their constitution along with blasphemy laws. In the Muslim world there is a decent amount of support for blasphemy laws.

I don;t think she's jumped the shark. She's always been a little too over the top to be a constructive voice anyways. In fact it seems she's toned down a bit.
But, she's not necessarily incorrect.

I can't find fault with that.

Nor I. Should was brutalized fairly badly when she was younger and the people who brutalized her said they did it in the name of Islam. I do expect nor require a person so mistreated to be reasonable about the thing they feel mistreated them. That does not mean I may not favor taking action against them, but ordering someone neutralized (which should not be read as 'killed') is not the same thing as faulting them.

Fox & Friends get punked. Heh.

Carlson tried throughout the interview to steer Rice back to the stagnant unemployment rate and weak job market that has purportedly prompted young Obama supporters to abandon the president. It proved to be a futile effort, as Rice responded with a series of incoherent non-sequiturs about both presidential candidates.

Why did he support Obama four years ago?

“Oh, I was a huge Obama supporter in 2008, I met him in the third grade,” Rice said while taking a drink from a white cup. “I met him when I was little.”

And why is he now supporting Romney?

“Why I am supporting Mitt Romney? It’s actually a funny story,” Rice said as a visibly uncomfortable Carlson awaited his response. “I lost a basketball game to a friend of mine.”

New protests erupt over Prophet Mohammad film

(Reuters) - Protesters in Afghanistan and Indonesia burnt U.S. flags and chanted "Death to America" on Monday in renewed demonstrations over a film mocking the Prophet Mohammad that has unleashed a wave of anti-Western sentiment in the Muslim and Arab world.

Indonesian police fired teargas and water cannon to disperse hundreds of demonstrators who massed outside the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta, capital of the most populous Muslim nation.

In Kabul, thousands of protesters took to the streets, setting fire to cars and shops and throwing stones at police.

"We will defend our prophet until we have blood across our bodies. We will not let anyone insult him," said one protester in the Afghan capital. "Americans will pay for their dishonor."

Todd Akin’s Wife Compares GOP Abandonment to Rape

Rep. Todd Akin’s wife, Lulli Akin, says the Republican Party’s attempts to push her husband out of the Missouri Senate race — over his false assertion that women who are raped rarely get pregnant — are like rape itself.

She also believes the GOP’s abandonment is on par with the tyranny that launched the American Revolution.

Akin’s wife isn’t the first one to compare Akin’s explosive rape comments, and the ensuing fallout, to rape: Bryan Fischer said the party’s treatment of the embattled candidate had made Akin “a victim of forcible assault.”

Lulli Akin made the charge in a new National Journal profile, which reveals a family affair of a campaign — Akin’s campaign manager is his son, and Lulli is also a key player.

Even if there were technically no cooperation, the cost of producing advertisements is dwarfed by the cost of putting them on the air. Crossroads or whichever other SuperPAC could easily make a dozen different spots anticipating possible directions for Romney (or Obama) to take his campaign, and then only air the ones that mirror the candidate's official campaign effort.

GOP Congressman Blows Up At CNN Host: ‘I Don’t Care What Fact Check Says,’ Obama Apologizes For America!

Since violence broke out across the region, Republicans have charged that Obama’s “defeatist” policies have caused the unrest and contributed to the death of Libyan ambassador Christopher Stevens. But pressed to detail where Obama has apologized for America by CNN host Soledad O’Brien, King came up short:

O’BRIEN: Never once in that speech, as you know, which I have the speech right here. that was — he never once used the word “apology.” He never once said “I’m sorry.”

KING: Didn’t have to. The logical — any logical reading of that speech or the speech he gave in France where he basically said that the United States can be too aggressive. [...]

O’BRIEN: Everybody keeps talking about this apology tour and apologies from the President. I’m trying to find the words ‘I’m sorry, I apologize’ in any of those speeches. Which I have the text of all those speeches in front of me. None of those speeches at all, if you go to factcheck.org which we check in a lot, they all say the same thing. They fact check this and they say this whole theory of apologies…

KING: I don’t care what fact check says.

O’BRIEN: There are fact checks. You may not care, but they’re a fact checker.

KING: No. Soledad. Any commonsense interpretation of those speeches, the president’s apologizing for the American position. That’s the apology tour. That’s the way it’s interpreted in the Middle East. If I go over and say that the U.S. has violated its principles, that the United States has not shown respect for islam, that’s an apology. How else can it be interpreted?

O’BRIEN: I think plenty of people are interpreting it as a nuanced approach to diplomacy is how some people are interpreting it. So I don’t think that everybody agrees it’s apology.

Warp Drive May Be More Feasible Than Thought, Scientists Say

HOUSTON — A warp drive to achieve faster-than-light travel — a concept popularized in television's Star Trek — may not be as unrealistic as once thought, scientists say.

A warp drive would manipulate space-time itself to move a starship, taking advantage of a loophole in the laws of physics that prevent anything from moving faster than light.
[snip]
Warping space-time

An Alcubierre warp drive would involve a football-shape spacecraft attached to a large ring encircling it. This ring, potentially made of exotic matter, would cause space-time to warp around the starship, creating a region of contracted space in front of it and expanded space behind. [Star Trek's Warp Drive: Are We There Yet? | Video]

Meanwhile, the starship itself would stay inside a bubble of flat space-time that wasn't being warped at all.

Reminds me a little of a flying machine I've never gotten around to inventing yet.

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho -

A 21-year-old man who refused to turn off his video camera in the Kootenai County courthouse ended up running afoul of court officers and was tased, cuffed and booked into the jail.

His original crime? Riding his bicycle at night without a light.

On Monday, Robert Peterson walked into the courthouse for a hearing with his video camera on, rolling as he went through security, walked to the courtroom and sat down.

In Idaho the law even requires the media to get permission before filming, something Patterson did not do when he showed up and started recording everything.

Yeah, It's Think Progress so not surprising they are misrepresenting the context. However, Ayaan has said a lot of over the top stuff in the past, she's unfortunately not much of a role model for the rest of us. But she has her own thing going on. She's often too bitter for my taste but I do admire her courage.

Wait a minute. Did you actually read that Think Progress article, or are you just making assumptions again? Because in fact, they didn't misrepresent anything. They reported Hirsi Ali's words in full, in their proper context.

And while it may not be correct to say she was "sympathizing" with Breivik, she was very definitely making excuses for the anti-Muslim crowd and holding them blameless for inspiring Breivik, by claiming that it was the LACK of discussion of anti-Muslim views that drove him to his crimes.

Not only did they post the entire quote in context, they included a video of her full statement.

Fourthly and finally, that one man who killed 77 people in Norway, because he fears that Europe will be overrun by Islam, may have cited the work of those who speak and write against political Islam in Europe and America – myself among them – but he does not say in his 1500 page manifesto that it was these people who inspired him to kill. He says very clearly that it was the advocates of silence. Because all outlets to express his views were censored, he says, he had no other choice but to use violence.

They didn't "misrespresent" anything at all.

I ignored it because the link went to Think Progress. I find them dishonest enough to completely ignore. I was just responding to someone else who checked out the story and found it inaccurate. I have no personal opinion on the accuracy of the article but i'm not surprised some people may find her comments were misrepresented.

From the article:

Mitt Romney’s campaign promised to unveil more specifics on Romney’s campaign proposals during a conference call with reporters Monday, pushing back on bipartisan criticism that the Republican has yet to say clearly what he’d actually do in office.

But the campaign’s pledge for specifics was lacking new specifics itself — campaign officials instead listed a litany of policy proposals Romney’s already discussed on the campaign trail.

Meta fail.

OFFS Kilgore. Fine,if you think that Think Progress isn't honest, then why not read her actual words and make a decision before you make yourself look foolish? You do this alot, the skimming over articles, the not watching videos or tv programs being discussed, etc. There's having an opinion, and then having an informed opinion, the latter being a more practical approach to having a discussion, you know, like we're trying to do here.

Since Gus linked to the speech and it seems to be an issue now I read the whole thing. I don't find her speech outrageous and I don't find her attitude towards censorship to be extreme. It's actually one of her more tame speeches. She doesn't appear to be a supporter of Brevik or his actions.

Here's the whole speech if you want to read it.

In her lecture to the Axel Springer Foundation, Ayaan Hirsi Ali argues against self-censorship in discussing women’s rights.

WOW, I'm going to have to ponder that for a while.

617 Charles Johnson  Mon, Sep 17, 2012 10:55:56am

By the way, Hirsi Ali's claim that "all other outlets" to discuss Breivik's anti-Muslim views were "closed" is a ludicrous and completely false claim. This bigoted crap is absolutely everywhere on the Internet. The truth is exactly the opposite of what she said.

Yeah. Using Breivik as an example was a poor choice. I mean he's really an example of a criminal response. Some would say a psychotic response. However, there is a problem with self-censorship if that's the correct word. We don't apply our critical thinking skill equally amongst our criticisms.

Louisiana State University Evacuated Due To Bomb Threat

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana - Police evacuated Louisiana State University's main campus Monday after someone called in a bomb threat.

The call came into the East Baton Rouge Parish 911 center. LSU administrators determined the threat was significant enough to evacuate the campus.

Students were notified by text about the evacuation. So far, authorities have found nothing.

This comes after bomb threats at the University of Texas and North Dakota State University last week.

Hopefully this is just a false alarm like last week.

I think the headline to the Ayaan Hirsi Ali article was misleading. She's not a supporter of Brekivik as the headline implies and she's not promoting his ideas. It's a decent article about censorship. I don't a agree with every line but I don;t think it's outrageous.

The headline:

Conservative Think Tank Scholar Promotes Claim That Norway Terrorist Attacked Because He Was Censored

Please explain how this is misleading. It's exactly what she said in her speech:

Fourthly and finally, that one man who killed 77 people in Norway, because he fears that Europe will be overrun by Islam, may have cited the work of those who speak and write against political Islam in Europe and America – myself among them – but he does not say in his 1500 page manifesto that it was these people who inspired him to kill. Because of his mental illness, he lacked the skills to utilize avenues for self-expression. I.E. --a psychiatrist.

I can see her point tho. Those who are unable to integrate would feel unable to express their views in ways other than violence.

More a case for MORE social services to reach those individuals.

The vid played for me here, but wouldn't at YouTube, so I may not get to see the rest.

There were a few errors in Part One, like Mormons not being allowed to own guns. (Mexicans are not allowed to own guns, except by a very difficult permit process, but the LeBaron family got permission after being repeatedly attacked by cartel thugs). I've been following news from that area for a while. My most recent Page about it is here.

It might be an exaggeration to say that Mitt Romney is "personally" affected by this. His relatives down there say he never visits, has not been in touch at all.

Pete Seeger asked Billy Bragg to sing the Inernationale at an event some time ago. Billy replied that the lyrics in the English version were "archaic and hard to sing". Pete suggested that he rewrite them.

Here's Billy's version:

Stand up, all victims of oppression
For the tyrants fear your might
Don't cling so hard to your possessions
For you have nothing, if you have no rights
Let racist ignorance be ended
For respect makes the empires fall
Freedom is merely privilege extended
Unless enjoyed by one and all

Chorus:
So come brothers and sisters
For the struggle carries on
The internationale
Unites the world in song
So comrades come rally
For this is the time and place
The international ideal
Unites the human race

Let no one build walls to divide us
Walls of hatred nor walls of stone
Come greet the dawn and stand beside us
We'll live together or we'll die alone
In our world poisoned by exploitation
Those who have taken, now they must give
And end the vanity of nations
We've but one earth on which to live

And so begins the final drama
In the streets and in the fields
We stand unbowed before their armour
We defy their guns and shields
When we fight, provoked by their aggression
Let us be inspired by like and love
For though they offer us concessions
Change will not come from above
