“Shhh” is a dark fairytale about a young boy, Guillermo, who uses his imagination to overcome his monstrous bully at night. Tired of being scared, Guillermo eventually takes matters into his own hands. Inspired by the lucid dreams of director Guillermo del Toro during childhood.

At the very beginning of this interview, Guillermo del Toro discusses these childhood experiences with monster nightmares and lucid dreaming, which inspired this film.

This is an anti-bullying project created in our spare time with a low budget. A tribute to one the filmmakers we look up to since we were kids, Guillermo del Toro. It couldn’t have been completed without many sleepless nights and a lot of help & support from our talented cast, crew, family and colleagues. The film had a great response in the festival circuit and we’re very happy to finally share it with all of you here.
Please share/like/comment this film if you enjoyed it. We hope to bring more fun stuff to you. Gracias!

Happy Halloween!!! :)

Speaking of which, I found out today that my wife’s birth control prescription was 100% covered by my insurance, while my high blood pressure prescription costs $5 per refill. Says I, “Well, I guess that means our sex life will be great, until my heart explodes halfway through.”

As if the day’s news can’t get rougher, it looks like things are heating up in Israel, Gaza, and Syria:

Hamas fired mortars at Israeli forces after they crossed into Gaza to go after smuggling tunnels. 5 IDF soldiers were injured in the fighting.

Hamas sources say operatives fired mortar shells after IDF tanks crossed border in area where terror tunnel previously uncovered leading from Gaza to southern Israel; IDF soldiers lightly, moderately wounded in exchange.

Then, there’s ongoing reports that Israel went after a Syrian weapons depot or transfer points where the IDF believed missiles and other weapons were being transferred to Hizbullah. The US confirmed that Israel targeted and eliminated two such transfer points.

The official, speaking to CNN, said Israel targeted missiles and related equipment out of concern that they would be transferred to Hezbollah.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which collates reports from opposition activists, said there had been an explosion at a Syrian air defense base near Jableh, in the Mediterranean coastal province of Latakia. The Latakia area is an Alawite and regime stronghold.

Israel isn’t confirming anything, but this would be the 5th time they’ve gone after these kinds of transfer points to prevent Assad from transferring weapons to Hizbullah in Lebanon.

One could go back and look at every single article with his or Poitras’ byline and find glaring errors.

His assertions about what the NSA was doing were repeatedly overblown and amounted to hypothetical situations where the Constitution and FISC didn’t exist.

Or claimed that programs were brand new when they’d been known and reported upon years before.

Or claimed that the US was unique in how the NSA operates while every other country on the planet does, or attempts to do, what the US does.

Or claimed that the US shouldn’t be spying on allies and potential foes (which everyone does).

The peak here is around 6:00 PM. Usually a few crews of up to a dozen trick-or-treaters at once, depending on the weather. A bit down this year because of rain, but not as much as the cold from 2 years ago. Still, the Mrs. Fish has lots of leftover chocolate, which makes her a very happy fishy.

Our first time in this house, we ran dangerously low. We’ve been improving every year in the quantity department. One of these years, we’d like to go big and be “that house” that gives out the really good stuff.

Used to get tons of kids back in Ocean County during the late 70s. Kids, teenagers, etc.

I’m not even sure what the town’s official hours are, if any. But I shut down the lights about half an hour ago, after the Mrs. Fish’s folks went home. They come out every year, laugh at our costumes, eat the snack food we prepare, and hand out candy while we take the fishspawn around.

Tomorrow I’ll walk the dog around the neighborhood and note the people who:
a) Didn’t light up/hand out, and
b) Followed the routine of taking garbage cans to the road for Fri.

I’m thinking that we are seeing a transition in our society. When I was young waayy back when our albeit poor neighborhood was full of us rug rats out begging for candy.

Now, decades later, with scare stories of razors, needles, drugs, and what not, pretty much the whole tradition has petered out, no?

At my old neighborhood, I lived on a lake. Basically, all the trick-or-treaters came on a trailer pulled by a 4-wheeler and that was the end of it. This neighborhood seems to be a lot more popular; probably because it’s a lot more younger people with young kids.

42 PhillyPretzel  Thu, Oct 31, 2013 6:24:34pm

All of the kids went to one of my neighbors who goes all out and makes a spooked graveyard.

re: #38 freetoken

There are still a few hot spots in my neighborhood with lots of trick-or- treaters, but on this street, most of the folks are grandparents and it looks like they turned the light off early and are in hiding. Kids roaming freely seems to be a custom in decline though.

We’re getting better since the nadir a few years ago when the preachers had everyone in their alternate ‘Hell Houses”. Probably had a hundred kids, mostly cruising with parents in small convoys. No one walks in this town.

In the years since the Massachusetts health care law went into effect nothing has changed my view that a plan crafted to fit the unique circumstances of a single state should not be grafted onto the entire country. Beyond that, had President Obama actually learned the lessons of Massachusetts health care, millions of Americans would not lose the insurance they were promised they could keep, millions more would not see their premiums skyrocket, and the installation of the program would not have been a frustrating embarrassment. Health reform is best crafted by states with bipartisan support and input from its employers, as we did, without raising taxes, and by carefully phasing it in to avoid the type of disruptions we are seeing nationally.

A friend of mine, I’ve talked about her before, is a wingnut. A real friend, not just a facebook “friend.” We’re talking about one of the smartest people I knew from my high school and college days, a Ph.D no less. But what makes it tragic instead of enraging is that she’s had some serious cognitive trauma, at least one tumor and a couple of brain surgeries. She’s come back rather well, considering, but I think during the most vulnerable recovery phases she was bombarded with non-stop financial conservative / selfish libertarian dumbshittery by her parents, family, a few “friends” and other caregivers. We’ve been out of touch for a long time but she wasn’t like this before, the change is just shocking.

Anyway today I got the old Obama executive order myth, mixed with a record size of government and a side of looming budgetary apocalypse.

I’m trying to be gentle and just provide unambiguously documented evidence addressing each misconception and outright falsehood, because this is someone who’s once formidable critical thinking ability has been palpably damaged, and she’s just repeating things she honestly believes because people she trusts have convinced her they’re true. So frustrating though seeing how the conservative lie machine cynically uses and manipulates the most vulnerable among us.

My half brother too, dude’s a gigantic asshole. He is damaged though, epic level alcoholic and had an absolutely horrific, abusive childhood. Deck stacked against him from day one and he did nothing to avail himself of the educational assistance my Dad constantly offered him along the way. He only ever wanted cash.

Your story raises the interesting issue of personality and what makes a person the person they are.

As I get older and observe my older relatives, I see how as senility sets in (quickly or slowly) the personality can change. When people suffer strokes is the acute example of this, but even without a major stroke there are changes as people age.

What makes me me? The physical structure of the brain changes, decreases in capability due to illness. Repetitive actions get reflected in brain adaptations (e.g. Ballet dancers’ brains suppress signals to stop dizziness.)

The choices we make on what we repeat thus shape who we become, literally, as in the nature of our being.

This is not a new revelation - religious institutions intuitively work on this principle (which is why I propose the resistance of people, who have sat 30 years in a creationist pew, to the tested reality of evolution is an example of why more significant changes are needed wrt religion in our society). Usually misquoted and taken out of context:

For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he:

and

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

and

whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report … think on these things.

are favorite pulpit material. Catechisms etc., are all geared towards shaping the mind.

All these people filling their days with hate radio, wingnut scams, and the like are doing themselves real harm (not to mention what they are doing to other people.)

People change over time - that’s one of the themes picked up in everyone’s favorite TV show of past few years - Breaking Bad. Any drama or fictional story, if the characters are to be real people, reflect this idea.

It’s gracious of you to try and help your friend; perhaps your counter-programming is what she needs to find her way out of what I consider to be the bitter cul-de-sac American popularism.

I’ve decided not to renew my lease and stay with him for a few months. One Halloween regret tonight…we had a bowl full of different individually wrapped candies - kisses, milky ways, reeses cups, werthers…well, I had one 4 year old princess at the door who, when I randomly grabbed three candies and dropped them into her hand, wound up with three werthers butterscotch candies. As she was more focused on quantity over quality, she quickly turned and ran before I could give her a fourth candy of a different variety.

I just know her parents got home, and while having a glass of wine and doing an inventory of her haul, looked at each other and said, “What kind of asshole gives a four year old werthers?”

I feel so bad.

I watched a local interview with Amardeep Kalekahe when he announced he was running against Paul Ryan. He was making outlandish claims about selling Lake Michigan water to California and I knew right away he had no chance.

There’s this too.

Paul Ryan’s Democratic Opponent Is Alien Conspiracy Theorist, 9/11 Truther

When 35-year-old Amardeep Kaleka recently declared his intention to run for the Democratic nomination to challenge Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) in 2014, most news coverage focused on one facet of his story: His father was one of the murder victims of the 2012 massacre at a Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin. That murder convinced Kaleka to run as a Democrat and advocate for enhanced gun control.

But during a recent interview with the Madison Capital Times, Kaleka, who is not the only Democrat looking to run against Ryan, revealed another side of his biography: conspiracy documentary filmmaker. Kaleka directed the 2013 film Sirius, a documentary that purports to uncover evidence of extraterrestrial life on Earth and suggests that the September 11 terrorist attacks were a “false flag” operation. Kaleka is also listed as editor and director of photography and shares credit for the documentary’s “story idea.” The film has slightly better production values than your typical conspiracy diatribe, but it hinges on some far-out concepts.

Hopefully these early observations will quickly deflate his run and Rob Zurban can get full support.

The local Democratic party here has the same problem - either it’s the entrenched establishment, like the now disgraced San Diego mayor, whose problems are ignored until it is too late, or in the those areas with the entrenched SoCon right (such as the Duncan Hunter territory) the looney (911 Truther types) nuts run as the (D) candidate.

It’s such a sad state of affairs, our political party.

Democracy has always been mostly a snow-job, a cover for how things are really done, but I have to believe that sooner or later the need to have a working government will out weigh the loony fantasies we chase to escape our daily drudge.

Is God punking America again?

Tom DeLay says he’s on divine mission

A month after a Texas appellate court overturned his conviction of corruption charges that ended his political career, former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay says he is on a mission from God.

DeLay, who accepted Christ during his first term in Congress in 1985 and became a member of Second Baptist Church in Houston, said Oct. 20 in a half-hour interview with Texas mega-church pastor John Hagee that America is ready for a constitutional revival.

“The way I see it is that Jesus died for our freedom, and Jesus destroyed Satan so that we could be free, and that is manifested in what is called the Constitution of the United States,” DeLay said.

“God created this nation and God created the Constitution,” he continued. “It is written on biblical principles, and the only way that we will ever see the light, in my opinion, is if we return to that one thing that unites almost every American, and that’s the Constitution.”

[…]

DeLay said his finest hour was not when he learned of his exoneration, but occurred this year on Aug. 4, when God revealed plans for the next chapter of his life during a plane ride returning from a mountaintop retreat in Oregon.

“I spent four hours on that plane in a conference call with the Lord, and he told me two things,” DeLay said. “He told me: ‘You’re coming out of the wilderness. You’re going to write a book. It’s going to be called Shut It Down,’ about constitutional revival.”

The second thing DeLay said God told him was “I have heard my people,” referring to Second Chronicles 7:14. “My awakening is beginning, and you’re going to be part of it.”

“I can’t tell you how that overwhelmed me,” DeLay said. “He’s chosen somebody that’s totally incapable, not worthy of call, but I just can’t wait.”

Common Core standards debate heats up over payments by John Birch group

The clamor over nationwide K-12 academic standards adopted by Wisconsin and discussed at four recent statewide hearings intensified this week with news that several out-of-state speakers critical of the standards received compensation through an arm of the conservative John Birch Society.

Leaders of the American Opinion Foundation, an independent nonprofit associated with the Wisconsin-based society, say they paid for about $5,500 worth of travel expenses for five Common Core State Standards critics to speak at the hearings in Fond du Lac, Eau Claire and Wausau this month. They said local citizens raised the money.

The latest select Assembly and Senate committees to re-examine the standards were spearheaded by Republicans, but many saw them as agenda-driven from the start because the highest-ranking education lawmakers in the state — Senate Education Chair Luther Olsen (R-Ripon) and Assembly Education Chair Steve Kestell (R-Elkhart Lake) — declined to participate.

One Milwaukee lawmaker resigned from the Assembly’s review panel this week, calling the hearing process “deeply biased.”

“I cannot in good conscience sit on a committee that has involved the most extreme national interest groups on education in planning and executing official Legislative hearings,” Rep. Christine Sinicki (D-Milwaukee) wrote in a resignation letter to chairmen of the Senate and Assembly Common Core review panels.

Would someone buy Anonymous a huge bunch of bananas?

iPhone 5s fingerprint scanner intended for NSA surveillance - Anonymous

“When Apple unveiled the iPhone 5s and its built-in fingerprint scanner you could almost feel conspiracy theorists around the world gearing up for an epic battle. There were a number of - mostly disreputable - claims around the web that Touch ID is not secure and that the information will be shared freely with the US government for the sake of surveillance. Now these privacy fears may be getting a boost from a somewhat more reliable source, Anonymous.

“While US government shut itself down and put 800,000 people temporarily out of work, the hacktivist group Anonymous released a video statement with an accompanying Pastebin document claiming that there are definitive links between AuthenTec, the company that developed the iPhone 5S’s fingerprint scanner, and the US government. A series of news articles and press releases draw a strong line between Touch ID and the US government surveillance.

Hanukkah is 8 days, but only one day is designated for gifts, for us it’s 4th Light (because that’s my birthday!)

I give only one gift to each kid, and the older ones get cash. I love Amazon! I just have to coordinate this with my kids so I don’t end up sending them the same present that they got last year!

It’s one of the reason I feel very lucky at this time of the year—only 2 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. My g-daughter wants another child, but that might not happen. With 2 more presents for my sons, that’s a total of 6 I buy (well, 7, since I buy my g-daughter’s hubby one).

Is there much of a working class mindset in China? Much of the emulation of the rich and famous as we see in the US? There is a class structure in spite of China’s official political position, just as we have a class system in the US which, with the erosion of the “middle class”, is becoming more obvious.

It’s hard to make any parallels between China and the States. The working class in the USA has unemployment insurance, workman’s comp, AFDC, WIC, Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid to fall back on when things go bad. There’s no such thing for the majority of people in China. The safety net of the elderly is their children and grandchildren. So, the working class in China is juggling several balls in the air at once: saving for a home, for a car, for their kid’s schooling (education is not free here), for their family’s medical care, and trying to save money for emergencies. They are well aware of the profligate spending of the leaders and business elite, and there is a lot of resentment.

At the same time, they want to be in those top economic levels. Some have tried their hands at being entrepreneurs. Most work ridiculously long hours six days a week to scrape up enough money for themselves and their families. The American work ethic pales in comparison.

As long as China’s economy keeps chugging along, and people have a glimmer of hope of social advancement, that resentment will not boil over into conflict. But we all worry what will happen if the economy goes bust and umemployment skyrockets.

Not really. The must-have status symbols are Mercedes, BMW, Porsche, Range Rover, and Italian sports cars. Then comes the American brands, and then Japanese makes. China and Japan are not getting along well at the momen.

A planned economy hasn’t been in vogue since the time of Zhou Enlai. Sure there are five-year plans, but the government doesn’t try to run the show as it did under Mao — disastrously, I might add. There are plans to develop the western part of China — now well under way — by improving infrastructure, transport and education. My region has benefited from the Western Development.

Local planning is rather a joke here. Developers announce grandiose plans of building housing developments and skyscrapers that either get scuttled because they didn’t consult bribe the right officials or get built and stand empty because no one can afford to occupy them.

Yeah, observing both China and Russia practicing “market” economies is also a bit depressing, because in neither case has the common citizen benefited very much from it. I’m not naive enough to think there’s no bribery in the US, but it’s usually far more subtle and concealed, unless reports I’ve seen from China and Russia are just a pack of lies. I understand it’s pretty much a way of life in both places now.

I suppose the only way to truly experience it is up close and personal, although as a westerner, one’s own experience would be far different than a native of the country, I would imagine.

That’s just not true in China. Most people there still don’t live what we would consider “living well”, but nevertheless those working in jobs that feed the market economy do live substantially better than their parents and grandparents did 40 years ago. That’s not to say there isn’t cronyism, pollution, and poverty all over China, those problems are clearly there. But to say that the removal of many state controls hasn’t improved things substantially is quite wrong.

Families brace as billions in food stamp cuts set in

nbcnews.com

“Needy Americans who receive food stamps through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program are expected to suffer an average loss of $36 a month from a $275.13 per household benefit. There are a near-record 47.6 million Americans, representing 23.1 million households, on the program. The cost of the program will hit $63.4 billion in 2013.”

$63B is a drop in the bucket to at least provide food to people to keep them healthy enough to survive day by day.

I have a view of the building from my apartment, and watched it. They did a similiarly impressive light show for July 4th, as the fireworks were going off over the Hudson.

I really love that new lighting system they put in last year. For example, during the Superbowl, it was lit up red (for the 49ers) and purple (for the Ravens) and once Baltimore won, it went entirely purple and started pulsating.

The new lighting system is a sight to behold. Definitely a huge step up from the old one - and it uses a fraction of the power that the old one did - and allows for a whole lot more flexibility in light displays.

I think we’ll see more of those kinds of light displays on other buildings around the city. Dueling lights between the ESB and Chrysler building or 1WTC… would be pretty neat (and reminiscent of the light shows in Hong Kong and elsewhere).

Many are doing better because China has transitioned from an agrarian economy to a full industrial one. It’s not simply removing state controls and expanding the market economy that has improved some lives.

I saw the same thing happen in the US, too, over much of my life. You look at the photos of the poor in the Great Depression era and they are more than likely to be from rural areas where sharecropping was an accepted practice, particularly in the south, or in urban areas where racism was still in effect. Even after WWII, a tour of NC would have revealed some extreme poverty and hardship in the rural and mountainous areas of NC after Federal programs were discontinued. Mill work was preferable to field work and brought many people out of poverty as consumerism was amped up after the rationing of WWII.

In its defense, China has indeed made giant strides toward making life easier for the population. On the other hand, those at the top are skimming off money left and right, and investing it outside the country, while ensuring the common folk don’t have any recourse. Xi supposedly is trying to tackle corruption within the Party, but so far all he’s done is make some superficial gestures while clamping down on free expression on the Internet.

Upward mobility is sharply curtailed, because if you don’t know someone, or can’t bribe him enough, you are SOL. And, if you are from another part of China — even within the same province — you will rarely be considered for a job if a local person is available to fill it. Cronyism in China has been around for thousands of years, and they are very good at it. Boss Daley and Boss Tweed were amateurs by comparison.

Not as hard as it used to be. You can buy it in some hypermarkets, for a pretty penny, and meanwhile hope it’s not imitation shit made with paint thinner or rubbing alcohol. I can get whisky, rum, vodka, Jack D, scotch and even tequila here, but the selection is limited. The bars charge exhorbitant prices for Western booze. I’m on a teacher’s salary, so I limit myself to Chinese beer unless someone else is buying.

Some of it for me is just undrinkable, with a nasty aftertaste that reminds me of the smell of lab chemicals. The really primo stuff, which apparently you have to have connections to buy, is smooth and a bit sweet — and about 100 proof. So, you can drink a lot before you realize you already drank too much about two shots earlier.

China’s drinking culture is very different from America’s. Here, it is a matter of honor and hospitality for men (mostly) to toast each other over dinner, and “kanbei!” means “bottoms up!” so by the end of a long dinner you may have downed several shots of 100-120 proof booze. Drinking outside meals is not as common, although bars are becoming ever more popular.

The Clintons on Halloween:

240 lawhawk  Fri, Nov 1, 2013 7:29:59am

The GOP attempting to hype the fact that people are losing their crappy insurance currently and expanded opportunities to get better insurance that in some instances will be far cheaper shows the depths to which they’ll go to play craven politics with the public.

Another way? Have everyone ignore that their solution to Medicare and Medicaid is to …. turn it into a larger form of Obamacare.

We know the outrage Republicans are expressing on behalf of people receiving cancellation notices from their individual market insurance plans is phony because it’s obviously phony. They don’t have any particular interest in ameliorating this phenomenon short of repealing or destroying the rest of the law. And its effectiveness as a talking point hinges on never acknowledging that Obamacare has helped anybody.

But the most revealing tell, identified here by the New Republic’s Jonathan Cohn, is that all of the healthcare reform plans Republicans support would disrupt the insurance market much more dramatically than the Affordable Care Act does. Republicans can’t achieve consensus on a plan to replace Obamacare, but they all basically agree that very few people should be allowed to keep the insurance plans they have right now.

Jonathan explains how almost all GOP plans would kick millions of people off of Medicaid, and inflict adverse selection on the employer-sponsored insurance market by creating a huge incentive for healthy workers to abandon their group plans for individual ones. The ensuing death spiral would result in more cancellation notices and “rate shock” than we’re seeing now by an order of magnitude, but without the safety net of the Affordable Care Act’s exchanges to catch people.

The National Review’s Ramesh Ponnuru’s solution to this problem is to rip the band-aid off slowly. Whereas Obamacare creates an immediate disruption for a relatively small group of individual policyholders, Republicans should create a slow, steady disruption for tens of millions more.

Other smart conservatives — which is to say, policy wonks without much cachet on Capitol Hill — would replace all insurance with subsidized catastrophic coverage and tax-preferred health savings accounts. Nobody with private insurance or Medicaid would get to keep what they have, no matter how much they like it.

They want to destroy the health care insurance delivery system as we know - and not for the better. They’d actually inflict far more harm on people, and the health care delivery system, than anything that is underway in the ACA implementation.

But that’s all part of the GOP plan. Expect people to not understand the complexities of the health insurance debate and make people think that they’re getting screwed by the Democrats who are providing access to better insurance at a reasonable price (in part through subsidies for those making up to 400% of the poverty level).

Top 10 Chinese Beers You Should Try

If you really want to try some good Chinese beer, head down to beautiful Dali Old Town in China’s southwestern Yunnan province and pop into the Bad Monkey. Best beer I ever had in China, hands down… Even gives my native California craft breweries a run for their money, if you ask me!

Hint: It’s run by 2 English guys who make craft beer, burgers, pizza and stuff, so really doesn’t qualify as “Chinese”. badmonkeybar.com

Chinese beer and grape wine is not bad, in fact. Most beers are lagers, and go down easily. The French set up vineyards years ago, and now Chinese reds are quite drinkable - -ranging from vin ordinaire to vintage quality. Whites are in short supply, for some reason, and more expensive.

The GOP has no alternative to offer because the ACA was their idea in the first place. Hell, Ryan put out a GOP “alternative” in ‘09 that broadly mirrored key points of the ACA, with insurance exchanges, coverage for pre-existing conditions, and subsidies in the form of tax credits. In the current political environment, the GOP won’t put out an alternative because the TPers refuse to consider anything besides bigger giveaways to the insurance companies, while the establishment can’t think up a plan that still relies on the “free market” without cribbing from the ACA.

ICYMI

In late 2011, a team of Obama’s campaign strategists conducted polling and convened focus groups to explore the political potency of installing Clinton as his running mate, according to “Double Down,” a book about the campaign by journalists Mark Halperin and John Heilemann.

(snip)

The book is a narrative reconstruction of the behind-the-scenes machinations of the campaigns of Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney. It details Romney’s search for a vice-presidential nominee. “Project Goldfish,” as his vetting team called its operation, was so secretive that researchers referred to the five finalists by aquatic names — New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (Pufferfish), former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty (Lakefish), Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio (Filet-O-Fish), Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida (Pescado) and Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin (Fishconsin).

If we had known about these fish names Romney would totally have won.

Not surprising. I’ve seen it firsthand. The Republicans I know that are hip to the fact their party is fucking insane, almost as a unconscious defensive reflex, become “independent” or “libertarian”. Almost overnight.

They know what a toxic sludge the party is swimming in, but can’t bring themselves to openly admit it. You see it around here every so often.

Bill Maher had a woman on his last show who pulled that shit. He just laughed in her face and commented on the sudden influx of “independents” on his show.

ICYMI, Volume XXVI

In an explosive report on CBS’s “60 Minutes” on Sunday, the British supervisor of local security guards protecting the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, on the night of Sept. 11, 2012, provided a harrowing account of the extremist attack that killed four Americans.

The man whom CBS called Morgan Jones, a pseudonym, described racing to the Benghazi compound while the attack was underway, scaling a 12-foot wall and downing an extremist with the butt end of a rifle as he tried in vain to rescue the besieged Americans.

The “60 Minutes” broadcast, in which Jones also recounted his clandestine visit that night to a Benghazi hospital to view the body of slain U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens, helped propel a new round of partisan conflict this week over the attack.

Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (S.C.) and other Republican lawmakers referred to it repeatedly during a Wednesday news conference. Graham said he would block confirmation of all of President Obama’s nominees, including Jeh Johnson as homeland security secretary and Janet L. Yellen as head of the Federal Reserve, until the administration allowed government witnesses to the attack to appear before Congress.

But in a written account that Jones, whose real name was confirmed as Dylan Davies by several officials who worked with him in Benghazi, provided to his employer three days after the attack, he told a different story of his experiences that night.

Between its Benghazi!!!!! and ACA trolling, CBS News has been in rare form of late.

Seems the misinformation campaign isn’t working for the GOP:

Poll: More Americans Want To Keep Or Expand Obamacare Than Repeal It

The Kaiser Family Foundation found that 47 percent of Americans want to expand (22 percent) or keep the law (25 percent). Conversely, 37 percent said they wanted to either repeal the law and replace it with some Republican alternative (13 percent) or repeal it without replacing it (24 percent).

That’s despite the fact that more Americans have an unfavorable view of the law (44 percent) than a favorable view (38 percent), according to Kaiser.

HSAs are supposed to be their appeal to younger, healthier Americans by suggesting that you get to keep the money in the HSA at the end of the year that doesn’t go towards paying for medical care. Problem is that the money A) can’t be used for anything else and B) gets blown through quickly if you get sick. Any system that is designed to market health care to healthy people is ultimately going to fail, because the purpose of health care is to take care of sick people.

They promise that the money will carry over, but if you have serious medical bills one year and can’t work the next, what good is that HSA? Not to mention that, under the present tax code, you only get the tax breaks associated with an HSA if you have a high-deductible plan, meaning you might clean out the HSA and your bank account before the health insurance kicks in, if it kicks in.

Under the ACA pastors who hurt themselves in private jet accidents are also covered.

Pastors who suffer from rectal-cranial inversions will not be turned away; mental health coverage is included in ACA policies.

I like Bill. I like Hilary. And Chelsea. But if I’m hearing this sh$t in 2015 and 2016 I’m going to overturn all of the tables and chairs:

In Kentucky, where Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes is challenging Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R), (Bill) Clinton recorded a video endorsing Grimes in which he says the nation needs more political leaders “willing to work together across the lines of party, geography and philosophy.”

“We have simply got to have more people who are willing to reach across the aisle and say, ‘I’m ready to work with you to build a better future,’ ” Clinton said.

In his Virginia speeches, Clinton said that he learned through eight years as president and 12 years as Arkansas governor that it’s important to advocate for your own philosophy but a mistake to not consider your opponent’s.

“When you’ve got a complicated set of problems with a lot of moving parts — and even Albert Einstein couldn’t give you the right answer to every question — the only thing that works is cooperation,” Clinton said Sunday in Dale City.

Principled compromise, Clinton asserted later that evening in Hampton, Va., is “a moral position.”

“It simply recognizes that nobody’s right all the time, your life is as important as mine, your opinion is entitled to the same respect mine is, and we’re all in this together, so we might as well work together to row this boat and go somewhere,” Clinton said.

Transportation Security Administration agent and a suspect were wounded in a shooting at Los Angeles International Airport on Friday morning, sources told the Los Angeles Times.

Law enforcement officers were flooding the airport, authorities said, and terminals 2 and 3 were evacuated.

Tory Belleci of the television show Mythbusters tweeted: “Heard gun shots then everyone starting running for the door. Not sure if anyone was hurt. #LAX.”

TV footage showed dozens of officers swarming the airport. Images also showed a law enforcement officer being treated by paramedics. He appeared to be alert. Another officer had a bloody hand.

Well, well, well…look at what I found doing a bit of searching on Morning Joke’s Joke Scarborough.

Joe Scarborough QUIET DIVORCE
… After 12-Year Marriage

Joe Scarborough — host of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” — quietly divorced his wife of 12 years back in January … TMZ has learned.

The 50-year-old former Florida congressman filed the divorce docs in Connecticut back in September 2012 … seeking to end his marriage to Susan Waren, a former aide to FL Gov. Jeb Bush. The two were married in 2001.

The former couple have 2 minor children together — a 10-year-old and a 5-year-old.

There have been rumors for years that Scarborough has a thing for his “Morning Joe” co-host Mika Brzezinski (who is married btw). And the sexual tension between the two is so apparent, they addressed it during a media event in 2009 … denying having any sort of romantic feelings for each other.

Why does this not surprise me? And, he was divorced from his first wife too, back in 1999.

Oh, those good old Republican Family Values and Protection of Marriage.

I’ve increasingly thought he was a bit of a dick. I’m thinking now he is.

Regarding the LA Airport shootings…getting very tired of this happening weekly now. Next it will be daily. This is getting to the point where the backlash on guns is going to be coming and it will be huge.

If the damn NRA and other gun organizations don’t start doing something politically, the majority of America will. And it will not be pretty for gun political organizations.

Wait, what protest is that? Are those Iranian flags?

Mental age 44; real age 72.

I think the assumption is that you get more conservative as you age.

I just hope people have more knowledge and discernment.

Your online age is much lower than 72. I thought you were closer to my age.

@AndreaMiller’s timeline suggests shooter might have been dressed in normal clothes and not camo.

Yeah. It’s the usual reporting in situations like this. We watch. We read. We wait.

Disgruntled employee?

No! FFS, how many times do we have to tell you idiot dhimmi wannabes that when they don’t say who the shooter is, then it’s code for Muslims. The Islamofacist supremacists are inflicting more of their Sharia on us at the behest of their Kenyan MB-loving leader, Obama. —Geller & Spencer

I thought it was “All Saint’s Eve” a Christian holiday. But I’m just a Juice so what do I know?

I think Halloween is a Druidic / Pagan celebration that may have been usurped by Christians.

Looks like it. Could be a “no war with Iran” thing over nukes as well.

Just beautiful work.

For a sense of perspective, the head is maybe as big as a pencil eraser.

IIRC, GW uses a mid-grade SLS type 3d printer for its master-work now — one of the reasons it’s even more overbearing about ‘in the style of’ models for 3d printing. (BTW, if that goes to court GW will lose. You can copyright a model, you can’t copyright a style - not in the US and not in the UK. But they figure if they yell enough and threaten high dollar amounts they won’t have to go to court, and so far it’s worked for everyone but torrent sources. // )

Real age 53. Mental age 35. And agree about them not having my answer on a number of questions.

It’s hardly a scientific questionnaire.

Same goes for Easter and Christmas, IIRC.

The live footage reporting is saying that they have two suspects in custody, one of them wounded. They are also reporting three other people wounded.

Given the typical early misstatements and fabricated “eyewitness” accounts that usually follow these events there is no telling what is actually going on yet. Or if the second “suspect” even exists and if he does if he actually had anything to do with the assault.

Police are currently searching the terminal for explosives that the suspect(s) might have left.

Heh, yeah, IIRC eggs, bunnies, Santa, and pine trees have precious little to do with the story of Jesus’ (a.s.) birth or resurrection.

Well, we know where Fischer got his morning talking points:

Signing prostitutes up for Obamacare might actually save money in the long run. Less spread of disease and fewer unwanted pregnancies, and thus fewer abortions. Not a bad idea, though the event wasn’t something I’d attend, far too lewd you know.

Mental age 37, actual age 47.

I do not know what this mean. I’m slightly less middle aged?

I thought it was “All Saint’s Eve” a Christian holiday. But I’m just a Juice so what do I know?

All Saint’s - Nov 1 since 835 AD - is in fact a Christian attempt at using the old holiday of Samhain, the old Celtic night of the dead traditionally celebrated on Oct 31. Halloween is a memory of those old beliefs of a night when the two worlds were closest together and the dead could cross back for the night.

It was not a good thing.

Bonfires and Jack o’ Lanterns were to keep the ghosts away.

But as the centuries have past, we now have kids getting candy.

I suspect the Celts would prefer our version to what they believed.
