Donald Trump Says Obama Committed the Biggest Crime in US History, but He Doesn’t Feel Like Telling You What It Was

MP4 Video

I just want to direct your attention to one moment from today’s bizarre clown show on the White House lawn, as Donald Trump answers a question from Washington Post reporter Philip Rucker, who wants to know exactly what crime Trump is accusing President Obama of committing.

So no crime, then.

I don’t plan to use a public bathroom until there’s a vaccine or effective treatment. I’d rather pee behind a bush. Way safer.

If I could buy masks from this company I would, not only because of blocking Trump, but for the workers’ sacrifices.

President Trump was pushing to get out in the public eye in recent weeks and tout his leadership during the pandemic, and White House staff thought they had hit on the ideal event: a presidential visit to thank the Pennsylvania factory workers who had recently taken herculean steps to ramp up U.S. supplies of protective equipment.

Workers had received national attention after dozens of them lived for 28 days inside their factory so they could ensure they were virus-free and their production was not contaminated or disrupted by illness.

White House officials pressed to hold an event at the Braskem factory, initially scheduled for last Friday. But after extensive back and forth, factory officials ultimately asked to postpone, worried that a visit from Trump could jeopardize both the safety of the workers and the plant’s ability to produce special material for masks and other medical gear, according to two people familiar with the decision and documents reviewed by The Post.

Still, when I left Kansas on ETSing from the active Army, I had hated my time at Ft Riley so much that I stopped on the interstate, got out and walked a few feet back to the state line and pissed across it into Kansas from Missouri.

Couldn’t have been that bad though, it was less than six months before I was at the National Guard recruiters office looking to wear the BDU’s again.

That GoFundMe needs more fraud reports for the asshats in Castle Rock, Colo.

The amount is now raised is $2,300.

Behind the privacy bar is the account:

“Fraud” is the category GoFundMe says to use on their report page for raising money for criminal activities.

You will be required to give the URL of the fundraiser, your E-mail if you have no account there, and your telephone number. I intentionally broke the link to the fundraiser here (replace the word dot with a period).

The only answer I’m interested in is from Ronna and that’s if she believes that lying to the FBI (or, really, any LEO) has ceased to be a crime. Obviously Michael Flynn thought so, as he plead guilty not once but twice to doing so. And only decided to challenge such after his new QAnon lawyer decided to start a campaign to get Donny to pardon him.

The only excuse we’ve heard is the “a cop has to tell you they’re a cop even if they’re undercover, else it’s ‘entrapment’” BS that no self-respecting lawyer would ever try as a defense.

The attorney who serves as the guardian ad litem in Scott’s Bluff County, as well as sitting on the boards of several local charities, just died from a terrible car wreck on Saturday. The wreck occurred on a county road three miles east of Scottsbluff.

The county sheriff’s department determined the other driver was the cause of the wreck. That driver’s car dipped off the shoulder of the road into the soft sand, overcorrected, and hit the attorney’s car head-on. That driver died at the scene.

That sucks. It’s hard to find the people willing to do guardian ad litem work. I was grateful for the gentleman who did it for my son when we were forced to sue the state of Wisconsin to get him the medical treatment his juvenile onset schizophrenia required. We differ on this issue but I’ll hope he finds the Light on the other side.

Les Misérables 2012 Master of the House
I heard this song and now I can’t get it out of my head.

Master of the house is a catchy song [Seinfeld]

The lyrics are great, here are some.

Master of the house, quick to catch yer eye
Never was a passerby to pass him by
Servant to the poor, butler to the great
Comforter, philosopher, and lifelong mate!
Everybody’s boon companion
Everybody’s chaperone
But lock up your valises
Jesus! Won’t I skin you to the bone!
Food beyond compare. Food beyond belief
Mix it in a mincer and pretend it’s beef
Kidney of a horse, liver of a cat
Filling up the sausages with this and that
Residents are more than welcome
Bridal suite is occupied
Reasonable charges
Plus some little extras on the side!
(Oh Santa!)
Charge ‘em for the lice, extra for the mice
Two percent for looking in the mirror twice (Hand it over!)
Here a little slice, there a little cut
Three percent for sleeping with the window shut
When it comes to fixing prices
There are a lot of tricks I knows
How it all increases, all them bits and pieces
Jesus! It’s amazing how it grows!
(Oh, sorry love
Must get something done about that)
I used to dream that I would meet a prince
But God Almighty, have you seen what’s happened since?
Master of the house? Isn’t worth my spit!
Comforter, philosopher and lifelong shit!
Cunning little brain, regular Voltaire
Thinks he’s quite a lover but there’s not much there
What a cruel trick of nature landed me with such a louse
God knows how I’ve lasted living with this bastard in the house!

GoFundMe needs to be called out publicly. This would be a good time if someone has a reporter in their Twitter or Facebook feeds to give the information to that person.

Since GoFundMe gets a cut of money raised, they might be a bit slow at responding to private reports (much like Facebook or Twitter).

Ricketts rejects calls to cancel TestNebraska contract, name nursing homes with coronavirus cases (Omaha World-Herald)

LINCOLN — Gov. Pete Ricketts rejected a call from four state senators to cancel the state’s $27 million contract with TestNebraska, saying the Utah companies behind the testing were the only group available for the hard-to-obtain tests.

“Every state was out there trying to find ways to expand testing and they still are looking — we’re still looking for ways,” Ricketts said Monday.

He’s lying. TestNebraska is not a coronavirus test. It is a cell phone app which collects data from people to allegedly make diagnostics easier if you later come down with the disease.

The app was developed by interested amateurs in Utah and given to the state government there. The state government then sold it off to a private corporation almost immediately, which then turned around and sold it to Nebraska.

State senator Megan Hunt had to fight to get an FOIA to find out how much tax money went into this, and called for the governor to cancel the no-bid contract (which violates state law, bids must be solicited even if it is known there is only one provider of a product or service).

State Sen. Machaela Cavanaugh of Omaha joined three other Democratic senators in calling for the cancellation of the contract with Nomi Health of Orem, Utah, and three other firms from the so-called “silicon slope” in that state.

The senators questioned the expertise of Nomi Health, which is a data collection firm with little health background, and its ability to provide 540,000 COVID-19 test kits for Nebraska, and said the money should have been invested in Nebraska tech companies and its public labs.

I saw the clip. Taylor Gage (his spokesmodel) went apoplectic on Twitter, calling her “fake news” and such.

Then he was dragged for a couple days by Nebraskans asking why he was a coward and would not address her points, and demanded he or the governor appear on her show.

He got seventeen likes, and scores of comments, all negative. (Twitter won’t show me the ratio on my computer.)

“…The 10 top areas recorded surges of 72.4 percent or greater over a seven-day period compared to the previous week, according to a set of tables produced for the task force by its data and analytics unit. They include Nashville, Tennessee; Des Moines, Iowa; Amarillo, Texas; and — atop the list, with a 650 percent increase — Central City, Kentucky.

On a separate list of “locations to watch,” which didn’t meet the precise criteria for the first set: Charlotte, North Carolina; Kansas City, Missouri; Omaha and Lincoln, Nebraska; Minneapolis; Montgomery, Alabama; Columbus, Ohio; and Phoenix. The rates of new cases in Charlotte and Kansas City represented increases of more than 200 percent over the previous week, and other tables included in the data show clusters in neighboring counties that don’t form geographic areas on their own, such as Wisconsin’s Kenosha and Racine counties, which neighbor each other between Chicago and Milwaukee.”

The latest numbers here suggest that we may finally have caught up on our testing - we have maintained a roughly 5000 tests/day rate over the weekend, but the % of new positives has fallen from 15-18% to 10-12%. This week’s numbers will be most telling, if new cases continue to fall we may begin to reopen as early as next week.

Oh shit.

We have the National Quarantine Center in Nebraska (that’s where most of the Diamond Princess passengers who came up positive ended up). We have a world-class infectious disease research laboratory at the University of Nebraska Omaha.

Pete Ricketts routinely derides both our universities and public schools. He never refers to them as anything but “government schools.” He believes the entire system should be ignored or privatised.

Republicans in this state routinely ignore letters from constituents who are Democrats (I get the impression staffers check voter registrations before deciding whether to respond).

My federal representative is on record saying he only represents Republicans.

And for all that, it is a political improvement from when I lived in Oklahoma.

re: #112 Quoth the raven, Covfefe.

I don’t have to deal with family problems like yours or Joe Bacon’s since all my family disowned me years ago.

That said, it might be time to put down the foot.

“Mom, I am not interested in your memes. They are factually incorrect, they do nothing to build trust or love in our family. If you insist on continuing to share such information which is known to be false, I will have to stop communicating with you.”

It is tough to draw a line with family members, and if she’s doing this despite you asking her to stop, then she doesn’t care about your feelings. That is a harsh statement but a true one.

You have to draw a line about what is acceptable and say “this far and no farther.” You wouldn’t accept it from some rando on Faceborg or some RWNJ in your town. As harsh as it sounds, Mom doesn’t get a special pass to act as a [insert epithet] because she is Mom.

You are neither required to respect that attitude nor give deference to it, and if she’s exploiting your emotions just because she’s your mother and she can, you need to take care of yourself first.

After the shitshow showdown with my sister in person in Chicago in late December, I know I will never speak to her again. She will not apologise for her hideous commentary to me and my wife and I know it. An apology from her is my price for speaking with her again, and I know she won’t do it; she is that stubborn.

The one cousin who still associates with me tries to magic balancefairy the issue (she was there too), saying I should give in to my sister. Nope. She’s been doing this all my life and after half-a-century I am done with that.

In reality, my sister probably thinks she is better off without me as well, so nothing of value was lost.

I hope it doesn’t come to a permanent loss of your relationship with your mother, but you must tell her what your boundaries are and you will not abide abuse.

One of the tweets responding to this video expresses my feelings:

I asked myself - why are these videos (of Sarah’s) so damn good?

1.They allow me to hear Trump’s voice & comments without feeling infuriated.

2.They remove Trump’s appearance & in doing so permit a clearer focus on the CONTENT of his speech (which is invariably outrageous).

Hearing Trump’s voice from Sarah’s mouth while observing her expressions and motions makes it possible to listen to his actual words and understand them; this would otherwise escape me because I cannot watch him in either real time or through videos or even listen to him speak on the radio.

They can cancel at any time if it supports criminal activity or breaks the rules of the site.

Moreover, there are fundraisers which have been there for years which have not reached their goals yet.

My sister used GoFundMe to help her out after her wife died. GoFundMe makes the money available to the recipient as soon as it clears; the recipient can withdraw their money (minus the fee) immediately.

You’re right, these comparisons are a good visual way to help people grasp the numbingly large numbers we’re dealing with now. The graphics help. I’d be inclined to include the date on which the number of deaths surpassed the capacity of each stadium. Perhaps go back to track the smaller venues and the dates they were matched? Something like:

XXX Stadium
Capacity: 99,999

US Deaths from COVID-19
May 10, 99,999
#TrumpDeathToll

This is going to be a grim and ongoing project. Having the date span over the series of images may help drive home how fast it’s happening.

U.S. Youth Pastor Who Fled His Child Sex Abuse Trial Is Arrested in Mexico (Friendly Atheist)

Don’t expect the Q-nuts to celebrate this; he’s a white guy not named Obama or Clinton.

Former Texas youth pastor Jeffrey Winston Forrest had been on the U.S. Marshals’ 15 Most Wanted list for the last two months, following his flight abroad when he didn’t show up for his 2016 trial on two counts of sexual assault of a child.

Acting on a tip from someone who’d spotted Forrest at a Walmart in the Zapopan area last month (after the pastor’s case was featured on In Pursuit With Adam Walsh), Mexican authorities arrested him on Friday.

He’s already been extradited to Texas. The state imposed a $3,000,000 bond, but even if he met it, he can’t be released due to a federal hold.

Why such a man was even allowed to remain out on bail for the original trial is unclear to me. I’m sure Christian privilege wouldn’t have anything to do with it.

“Persecuted” Christian pastor Tony Spell is suing Louisiana John Bel Edwards.

Pastor Tony Spell files lawsuit against Governor Edwards over stay-at-home order (WBRZ-TV, Baton Rouge)

CENTRAL - A local pastor who flagrantly defied Governor John Bel Edwards’ stay-at-home order by repeatedly holding large gatherings at his church is now suing the governor and local officials.

Documents filed Thursday say pastor Tony Spell is seeking a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction preventing Governor Edwards and the heads of local law enforcement agencies from arresting or fining him for continuing to hold services while the state order is in effect. EBR Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome and Central Mayor David Barrow are also named in the suit.

In the documents, attorneys representing Spell say it is a “travesty” that the pastor’s religious freedoms were infringed and claim that it hasn’t been proven that Spell truly violated the “ambiguous and contradictorily-worded” emergency order.

Spell was arrested last month after surveillance cameras caught him nearly striking a protester near Life Tabernacle Church while driving a church bus. Spell was then placed under house arrest after his release from jail for continuing to hold services despite a condition of his bond spelling out that he must obey the emergency order.

Governor Edwards’ current stay-at-home order is set to expire in just over a week on May 15.

The article includes a link to the lawsuit filing. It is as full of religious wingnuttery as you might expect, none of which actually applies to the law.

Things we can expect the Senate Repubs to try to get Dr. Fauci to say tomorrow:

- Dems “overreacted” to the danger posed by CV-19, imposing state/local orders that “went too far” rather than trusting the public to take “appropriate measures” to ensure their own safety

- That the media has been spreading “fake news” about the WH response to CV-19 and Trump’s actions were “realistic” rather than giving into the “hysteria” Dems whipped up about the outbreak

- In the same vein, any governors who’ve criticized the WH for being “slow” or not taking the matter “seriously” were engaged in partisan grandstanding and reports of shortages and hospital staff being in danger were “overblown”

- And the big one: Tell the public that that early hysteria was due to “faulty” models that predictions millions of deaths and the fact that we’re coming “way under” means we could avoided shutting down the economy and so Trump is blameless for the ongoing depression.

All of America will, to be honest. The losses really are just too large, too difficult to comprehend. It impacts my daily professional life and I can’t even really process 80,000 dead in two months.

There are not that many people in the US who have lived through truly massive loss of life. I am pressed to think of many examples since WWII - the Khmer Rouge, Idi Amin, and Rwanda come to mind, but there aren’t that many Americans that have had things like this happen around them. Americans accept staggering amounts of gun violence and death, and this appears no different.

America’s aristocrats are counting on this. They’re counting on people simply not caring about their neighbours. They’re counting on people not caring that others die to get them a haircut or their chicken nuggets. They’re counting on people not caring enough to question that the nation somehow goes from two thousand deaths a day to basically none within a week or two, and not caring if they just stop reporting deaths. That’s one of the main purposes of US media, to give people any flimsy excuse not to care.

Religion poisons everything, part eleventy million.

Exclusive: Internal Memo Circulated by LA GOP’s Sharon Hewitt Outlines Effort to Undermine Emergency Covid-19 Orders (Bayou Brief)

An internal memorandum from Mandeville-based GOP political operative Jay Connaughton, addressed to Republican state Sen. Sharon Hewitt of Slidell, and privately circulated among GOP state legislators outlines a series of talking points to use in a coordinated campaign aimed at politicizing and undermining the emergency orders issued by Gov. John Bel Edwards in curtailing the Covid-19 pandemic.

Edwards’ orders are in conformance with the guidelines issued by the White House and follow the recommendations of public health experts and medical professionals. The Bayou Brief obtained a copy of the document earlier this evening.

Among other things, the memo advises legislators to avoid “trap words” like “death/die,” “politics/political,” “models,” and “hoax.” The very first “trap word” on the list: “Republican.”

It cautions lawmakers to anticipate questions about whether or not “reopening too early (will) cause the virus to rebound” and whether a “virus respects parish borders.” Taken in its totality, the document reads like a guide to subverting public health policy and reframing the efforts to curb the pandemic, which has already claimed the lives of at least 1,800 Louisianians, as an “economic shutdown.”

re: #169 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

Note what Dark Falcon here did during the election. He said he did not support Trump, but other candidates.

When the GOP came down to Trump, did DF say anything like “I’m not voting for that guy?” No. He started denying facts and making excuses (my father) about why he had to vote for Trump.

He’d already identified the facts which to him made Trump an unacceptable choice, but when it was only Trump, he had to deny those same facts to justify voting for him.

In every step of the way he behaved as a religious person does in defending their faith.

Sixty million other Americans made that same choice. In the face of irrefutable evidence that Trump was manifestly unfit for office, their choice was to deny the facts and obey their party’s diktat.

If you do not support all our policy points, you are a heretic (RINO). The party has saints (Reagan, Lincoln, neither of which they actually understand). It has priests (party operatives and religious leaders) who tell them exactly how to think and what magical incantations to banish demons (Democrats). They put out missals (talking points) to ensure all their pastors (politicians) and parishioners (voters) are following their teachings (see the above article on the capture of the GOP talking points in Louisiana to undermine healthcare in the name of profit in a pandemic). They view wars against other nations as crusades (W in Iraq for example). Like all religions, atheists are evil (I don’t know that Atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered patriots. This is one nation under God.—GHW Bush while I was in the Navy being a patriotic citizen and he was my Commander-in-Chief).

Every aspect of conservatism has the hallmark of every major religion, and if it gains permanent ascendancy they will drag us into another Dark Ages full of fear, disease, starvation, war, and death.

People often believe what they want to believe, usually with stupid and evil results. But this can be done in both religious and non-religious contexts. E.g., there really isn’t anything more secular than a free market fundamentalist or a GOP apparatchik, although their thought patterns are as intrinsically disordered as the worst liars for Jesus.

IMO it’s a mistake to take all instances of people believing what they want to believe for stupid/evil ends and shoehorning that into a religious context.

It’s also true that there are religious believers who don’t use their religion as a crutch to support believing stupid/evil things that they want to believe, and it is severely insulting to deny this.

Atheists are a minority, and it is politically stupid for a minority to take a scorched-earth position in absolute opposition to all forms and manifestations of religion. E.g., we don’t get separation of church and state in the US unless it has respectable (near 50% or better) support from Christians.

Trump is getting increasingly nervous about his re-election prospects.

As Trump debates who should lead his campaign, he’s also struggling to settle on a 2020 strategy. Some advisers are lobbying Trump to embrace the reopening. “They’re going to gamble on the economy and hope it works,” a former West Wing official said. But another camp is pushing the view that Trump should run on a blame-China message. On top of everything, there is also fear in Trumpworld that Senate Republicans might finally break from him if the polls get bad enough. “The numbers are fucking terrible,” another former West Wing official said. “There’s massive anxiety in the GOP that he’s gonna take them all down with him.”

The problem (for Trump) with such an approach is that the past few weeks have seen the record fleshed out to show that the experts all told him to take precautions and he blew them off for fear that the economy would dip. “Nobody could have seen this coming” doesn’t really work when people did see it coming and you decided to play golf and hold rallies where you called the whole thing a “hoax.”

again, because DT’s tunnel vision saw Covid only as a threat to the economy and and consequently to his re-election chances, which would have been good if the economy was humming, unemployment down and the stock market up.

he did not understand that a nation will rally around a President in a crisis, no matter what happens to the economy, if he is showing strong and resolute leadership.

Trump’s abysmal response to this pandemic would be the stuff of black comedy if there weren’t such tragedy and death around it.

I wonder how Trump will react if someone close to him ends up intubated in an ICU? Part of me could see him going full-on Howard Hughes, retreating to Mar-a-Lago, barricaded behind a labyrinth of locked doors and security guards and living on Big Macs, Diet Coke and candy bars.

re: #157 Renaissance_Man

What’s going to hurt Republicans is that it’s not “too difficult to understand” when you originally know someone who’s died. When you know someone who’s a first responder, when you’ve seen what’s happening. You can dismiss it when you’re not involved but as this continues to infect people, you’re going to eventually be with that Six Degrees of…

re: #180 EPR-radar

People often believe what they want to believe, usually with stupid and evil results. But this can be done in both religious and non-religious contexts. E.g., there really isn’t anything more secular than a free market fundamentalist or a GOP apparatchik, although their thought patterns are as intrinsically disordered as the worst liars for Jesus.

I will address the subject only once here, then go back to bed.

I don’t normally use dictionary definitional arguments, but I will here. Religion is a social-cultural system of designated behaviors and practices, morals, worldviews, texts, sanctified places, prophecies, ethics, or organizations.

Just because they’re lying for Ayn Rand doesn’t make it any less of a religion than lying for Jesus. Just because they lie about Adam Smith doesn’t either.

Conservatism is every one of those things.

IMO it’s a mistake to take all instances of people believing what they want to believe for stupid/evil ends and shoehorning that into a religious context.

Sure, doing something out of conviction and being wrong is not a religion. Doing it in the face of facts that show they are wrong and throwing out the facts is.

It’s also true that there are religious believers who don’t use their religion as a crutch to support believing stupid/evil things that they want to believe, and it is severely insulting to deny this.

Fallacy of composition argument, equivalent to NotAllMen. Strawman: I didn’t assert that. Lots of people do good things who are religious. Point to where I said they did not. I have already pointed out in the past where people like Rev. William Barber and Bishop Talbert Swan have called out bigots and free-market worshippers (the term “free-market worship” is often used even here, worship being a fundamentally religious act).

Atheists are a minority, …

Yup, it is said we are the largest group it is okay to discriminate against in the USA. We are a larger group than any ethnic minority in the Democratic party.

You know what other minorities did? They spoke out. They organised. They would not take “no” for lesser treatment under the law. They are still speaking out.

… and it is politically stupid for a minority to take a scorched-earth position in absolute opposition to all forms and manifestations of religion. E.g., we don’t get separation of church and state in the US unless it has respectable (near 50% or better) support from Christians.

Motte and bailey fallacy, and a strawman. I was not taking a “scorched Earth” policy in “absolute opposition to all forms and manifestations of religion.” Atheists are generally amongst the biggest supporters of Freedom of Religion (amongst other things, that protects us in our lack of belief). I pointed out how conservatism acts like a religion.

I didn’t oust my Lutheran and Methodist family members from my life because they are religious. They did it to me because I am an atheist. My Presbyterian ex-wife divorced me because I’m possessed by demons (have epilepsy) and the Florida courts allowed her to use that argument, took everything I had, and made me homeless.

Unless an atheist was raised in a non-religious home, nearly every atheist in this country has a personal story about being cut off by some or all family members and friends simply because they don’t believe the same. How is this different from conservatism? Perhaps you should ask Joe Bacon about that.

Try an experiment: Tell your religious family members or friends you are an atheist. See what happens when you do.

This has nothing to do with what I advanced, that conservatism is a religion. It behaves like one. It is trying to drag us back into the Dark Ages like one.

We already have separation of Church and State in the USA. It is not my fault if Christians are lawbreakers. They are the ones trying to tear out separation from the Constitution. They have done it ever since the founding of the Republic.

California US representative Eric Swalwell defeated Pete Stark in his primary by casting Stark as un-American for being an atheist. State senator Megan Hunt outed herself as an atheist in a candidate questionnaire because she wanted to cut off attacks from Democrats, not Republicans. She saw what happened to Stark. (Our state has the most open atheists serving in the state legislature, two, her and Ernie Chambers.)

Funny how that’s not how it worked for the Civil Rights Act. The overwhelming majority at the time did not support it. Conservatives capitalised on that with their racist Southern Strategy. At the time Loving v Virginia was decided, the majority of whites though such marriages should be a crime, and they were in many states. (Interestingly, so did a significant minority of blacks.) Only decades later did disapproval drop below 50%.

news.gallup.com

I guess your argument here is the Lovings shouldn’t have bucked the system, because they were in an overwhelming minority of opinion.

But somehow we who are also discriminated against are just supposed to sit down and take whatever crumbs the majority throws our way. (You know, or we could demand our rights be respected. That gets you tagged “militant atheist” for demanding what everyone else gets by default.)

I’ve used the example of women protecting themselves from strange men they meet on the street by putting all men in the category of “threat” until shown otherwise. (It only takes one to have a really bad day.) I’ve also used the example of what happens if my local store chooses to try to ban me because I don’t believe the same as the proprietor. (Sure I could sue him, and the effect after I got “out-of-state agitators” on board to defend my rights would be to put him out of business and be hated by the whole community—they’re the folks who would rather have a Nazi in office than an atheist.)

I realise you don’t see the oppression of conservatism as religious in nature. Those of us who are not religious at all see the same tools and the same oppression and the same fervent belief they hold that their ideology is right and cannot fail, only be failed. They didn’t believe in conservatism hard enough, or were “not true conservatives.”

Back to bed.

I mentioned here a few weeks ago using stadiums as a gauge of the number of deaths as they kept going up.

What will be the scary part is when the largest US stadium threshold is passed, then you start all over again from the bottom up.

But perhaps an even more devastating number is to use the stadium capacity as a gauge of the number infected - and that number right now would easily chew up the top 10-15 stadiums.

Mythbusters did the same thing with a common cold. They had Adam act as if he had a runny nose, attached a canula so that it would mimic a runny nose, and the fluid was a UV sensitive dye. He then had 6 people sit around a table playing cards, and every last one except Keri got hit by Adam in some form or another, or got passed from one of the others.

But when everyone social distanced and minimized contact, all got less or no UV dye.

This is all pretty well documented stuff.

Well, no.

No “ability” - since SK is, IIRC, one of the most “wired” countries in the world, and the US is still lacking in even adequate Internet service in a good many places (as Anymouse can, and frequently does, attest); and cellphone usage is FAR from universal, in any case.

Their goal will be to fuck it up beyond any recognizability or credibility…and I am sure they are pursuing that as a strategy as Trump’s numbers tank and his mind unravels.

And, like so many other GOP “goals”, probably unlikely to be reached.
The problem, for them, is that voting in elections (Presidential on down) is run by the states - and not all the states’ election systems, even in some “red” ones, are so fundamentally partisan/dishonest as to “fuck up” - or in some cases, even be able to fuck up the results. Especially if the race is a blowout.

That isn’t to say, of course, that they won’t TRY to “game the system” - say, by enacting/enforcing (disgracefully legal) voter-suppression measures (restrictive ID requirements, curtailing “oppo” polling opportunities, etc.): but it’s questionable, IMO, exactly how effective such measures might be.

Naturally, when Trump loses in November (whether by squeaker or blue-tsunami), he and his creatures are going to start - and keep - howling FRAUD!!! RIGGED!!! STOLEN!!!! to the nth degree: but after the Electoral College “meets” in December, it will be GAME OVER. And the main thing then will be to try to curtail (or at least figure out how to remedy) the damage the Trump regime will be doing on its way out..

Except for the wave of pardons, of course: not sure what can be done about those.

Wow. Thanks for the info, I really did not know cell usage in the US was that pervasive.

Still doesn’t affect peoples’ attitudes, IMO, but it’s something.

And, like so many other GOP “goals”, probably unlikely to be reached.
The problem, for them, is that voting in elections (Presidential on down) is run by the states - and not all the states’ election systems (even in some “red” ones) are so fundamentally partisan/dishonest as to “fuck up” - or in some cases, even able to fuck up the results. Especially if the race is a blowout.

They knew exactly how and where to focus their efforts in 2016 (namely in PA, MI, WI and OH) and succeeded in overcoming a nearly 3-million vote disadvantage.

Well, no.

No “ability” - since SK is, IIRC, one of the most “wired” countries in the world, and the US is still lacking in even adequate Internet service in a good many places (as Anymouse can, and frequently does, attest); and cellphone usage is FAR from universal, in any case.

And besides, we seem to be populated with an above-average percentages of self-absorbed dumbshits whose first response to a cellphone “blast” is likely to be outrage like “how did they get my number???” and/or “GOVERNMENT SPYING!!1!11!!”…..

Cruise ships close the self-service buffet, and a gloved server hands you your plate and utensils, when they have noro aboard, as soon as it reaches a certain (small) number.

Except for the wave of pardons, of course: not sure what can be done about those.

this has been gamed out by people much smarter than me

-each state gets to send one slate of electors.
-there could be some question how they are chosen - does the vote count, if not does the legislature step in, or the governor, depending on state law
- in the end though, each state sends just one slate, so there can’t be any question

and there arent enough red states to conspiratorially flip the numbers

Lindsey Graham (R-SC), writes in the Greenville News that he supported the senator until 2017 when he “started having real misgivings about him when he failed to mount any significant defense” of the late Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), who President Trump frequently attacked.

Said Wilkerson: “I asked myself, ‘What is the character of a man who will not defend his best friend? If he won’t defend John McCain, why would I expect him to defend any of us in South Carolina?’”

Wilkerson is now endorsing Jamie Harrison (D) for Graham’s seat.

weird but good news?

“President Trump is losing a critical constituency: voters who see two choices on the ballot — and hate them both,” Politico reports.

“It’s a significant and often underappreciated group of voters. Of the nearly 20% of voters who disliked both Clinton and Trump in 2016, Trump outperformed Clinton by about 17 percentage points, according to exit polls.”

“Four years later, that same group — including a mix of Bernie Sanders supporters, other Democrats, disaffected Republicans and independents — strongly prefers Biden, the polling shows. The former vice president leads Trump by more than 40 percentage points among that group.”

Belafon  May 12, 2020 • 9:05:10am

In his economic briefings — which have featured former White House advisers like Jared Bernstein and Benjamin Harris as well as Heather Boushey of the liberal Washington Center for Equitable Growth — Biden has likened the necessity to spend massively and immediately, without the usual D.C. focus on deficits, to a wartime effort. Recently, on a private call with Colorado-based donors, a disenchanted Republican told Jill Biden, Joe’s wife and a prominent campaign presence, that he trusted her husband but feared he’d tacked too far left and wasn’t sufficiently concerned about “the pain” of the national deficit and debt. Jill, an English professor, replied, “I agree, there’s going to be so much pain that Joe has to address — it’s going to be the physical pain, the emotional pain, the social pain, the economic pain that this country is going to go through.” She ignored the part about the deficit…

Nope. Hughes was a hermit by nature. Trump needs an audience — and tweeting is an insufficient mechanism to grant him the public presence he craves. He withers without adoring fans surrounding him and praising him, especially in public places where all can view him.

My nightmare scenario: The GOP backs up Trump’s claim of massive voter fraud, and two sets of electoral votes are sent to Congress, one in which Trump has at least 270 electoral votes, many from states he didn’t actually win. Trump claims he was reelected, and refuses to cooperate with the transition, while Barr tries to make a case to arrest Biden for “voter fraud.”

That’s when me and my gun will be on Pennsylvania Ave.

Not if they craft a Bush v Gore style opinion. President Trump explicitly suggested that MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough had committed murder, Politico reports.

Tweeted Trump: “When will they open a Cold Case on the Psycho Joe Scarborough matter in Florida. Did he get away with murder? Some people think so. Why did he leave Congress so quietly and quickly? Isn’t it obvious? What’s happening now? A total nut job!”

That led Scarborough to respond: “For your sake, as I’ve been saying for years — Donald, for your sake, and for the sake of America, you need to stop watching our show, OK? It’s not good for you.”

One risk for Trump turning reopening plans into a polarized political issue is that — even setting aside the public health aspect — if a large swath decides it’s not safe to go out based on partisan instincts that would itself do grievous damage to the economy

A small swath will go out based on partisan instinct, an overwhelmingly larger swath will stay in - based on Common Fucking Sense and Concern for the Common Good.

There’s also this, though: By sitting on this now, any decision will have very little impact on Trump if we do our jobs and boot him from office, because there will be less than seven months before he leaves office. We’ll just be getting a head start on prosecuting him after he leaves.

Really, making this a partisan issue brings us the worst of both worlds—people who hate Trump will be reluctant to reemerge (although I think 95% of this effect is just concern about health, not Trump-hate…almost everyone hates the lockdown), and people who love him will resist restrictions. Trump has destroyed his own ability to influence the course of the pandemic. Worst of both worlds, but that’s just how Trump rolls.

Don’t be surprised to see this superman emerge unscathed.

Edit: Looks like it may be his spokesman. My bad.

Given the recent rash of Russian doctors “accidentally” falling to their deaths, I wouldn’t be surprised if that anyone catching COVID around Putin winds up dead.

From an “accident” and not the virus, that is.

The House is delaying its return until Friday as leadership continues to craft the next big—really big—coronavirus response bill, a draft of which is expected as soon as Tuesday, but probably Wednesday. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has urged her Democratic colleagues to “Think Big,” quoting Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell. She wrote: “We must ‘Think Big’ For The People now, because if we don’t, it will cost more later. Not acting is the most expensive course.”

Thinking big is precisely what early reports are suggesting. CARES 2 (the previous bill was the Coronavirus Aid Relief and Economic Security, or CARES Act) will provide more help to hospitals and medical workers, to small businesses, and to workers and families. A lot more help—it’s expected to come in above the $2.2 trillion provided in CARES 1. There are eight key provisions identified by reports from The Hill, including: state and local funding; rent and mortgage assistance; direct cash payments; funding for workers and small businesses; expanding broadband; ramping up coronavirus testing and tracing; an infusion of funds to the Post Office and funds for states to create systems for an all-mail election; and a 15% increase in funds for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), previously known as food stamps.

weird but good news?

Very good news; this group gave Trump the presidency in 2016 because they hated Clinton more than Trump.

The GOP realizes that if SCOTUS rules in favor of broad Presidential powers the next Democratic President can take advantage of it, right?

That is when the right-wing justices overrule the precedent they just set.

That argument is literally that the President shouldn’t be investigated because they might find out he is a criminal.

re: #345 Citizen K

It’s amazing how one can actually contract Covid-19, feel how bad it is first hand, and still be like ‘you’re a quack, open the country up no w’

To quote Rand Paul:

“I had an extraordinarily mild case,” Paul, who is also a doctor, said on “Fox & Friends” on Monday. “I had no symptoms, never had a headache, never had a body ache, never had a fever, never had a cough.”

Didn’t happen to him so it can’t be that bad.
