Whew. I had to turn on the A/C early tonight. When I turned on the A/C it was 88 degrees in my bedroom. Now close to 2 hours later is it 82.

I have NEVER seen four-digit dialing. Never ever. And I still remember my mom’s old phone number from 1969. Seven digits.

You have to live in a town with only one central office.

We have four digit dialing here. When I was a teen and we switched from the co-op phone company to GTE, we had four digit dialing there (they still have it now).

Oh wow, the Indiana AG Rokita:

I dunno, but wouldn’t this clearly show bad faith and or malice if this manages to get into a civil or criminal court?

Rokita initially complained on Fox News on Wednesday night that [redacted] was an “abortion activist acting as a doctor” who has a “history of failing to report” child abuse cases—a claim he did not substantiate.

He also called it a “horrible, horrible scene caused by Marxists and socialists and those in the White House who want lawlessness at the border.”
….
He claimed the Department of Child Services didn’t respond to requests for similar documentation.
Rokita also repeated his claim that the “horror” was “caused here by illegal immigration.”

Ma Bell’s “official” telephone exchange list. (Not all central offices used the official list.)

Ma Bell’s Officially Recommended Exchange Names (Goes to Uneeda Audio)

The following is a list of recommended names for dialable/quotable telephone EXchange names. It comes from AT&T/Bell’s publication “Notes on Nationwide Dialing, 1955”. Many cities with EXchange names had for decades been using names which are not from this list, and they were not necessarily required to change the names. These names were supposed to have been chosen such that pronouncing the name should easily identify the first two significant dialable letters of the word, as well as quoting the two letters themselves wasn’t supposed to be confused with other ‘like-sounding’ letters which were associated with different numbers on the dial. Since this list was Ma Bell’s official recommendation, it covered the entire Bell system. If you do not have a historically accurate exchange name to use for your current telephone number, you should choose one from this list.

To help foster the use of exchange names, send this list everywhere, or print out copies and hand them out on streetcorners!

Update: The prosecutor for Indianapolis, where the abortion took place, said his office alone has the authority to pursue any criminal charges in such situations and that [redacted] was being “subjected to intimidation and bullying.”

Back when I was on my village board, the board was considering shuttering the public library (because a couple loudmouths in town didn’t want to pay for a library since they didn’t use it).

The state library commissioner travelled all the way out here to testify before the board on what happens when towns close libraries. As libraries are a draw to the town (especially for people with children), someone moving to an area will consider whether a town has a library or not. (Eventually the board instead approved my proposal to increase the library board budget by 23%.)

The Vinton, Iowa library will reopen with limited hours starting Monday. The library board was approved by the town board to be volunteers, plus one library employee remains.

Vinton library to reopen with limited hours as board interviews director candidates (Cedar Rapids Gazette)

VINTON — The Vinton Public Library, which has been closed this week after losing its interim director — and, before that, two directors in two years — will reopen for limited hours beginning Monday.

The two directors left for other jobs amid city resident complaints about the library’s display of LGBTQ books and books about Democratic President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.

The library will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and from 2 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Board members and the library’s one part-time employee will take shifts to check out books and provide access to the library’s computers, copier and fax machines.

Library Board President Jimmy Kelly said before former interim Director Colton Neely’s departure last week, the board trained on checking books in and out, opening and closing the building and other tasks.

“We also got clearance from the city administrator as volunteers so we are covered under the city’s liability insurance, so we’re now considered to be employees basically,” Kelly said.

More at Internet Archive.

The Internet Archive has asked a federal judge to rule in our favor and end a radical lawsuit, filed by four major publishing companies, that aims to criminalize library lending.

The motion for summary judgment, filed Thursday in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and Durie Tangri LLP, explains that our Controlled Digital Lending (CDL) program is a lawful fair use that preserves traditional library lending in the digital world.

The brief explains how the Internet Archive is advancing the purposes of copyright law by furthering public access to knowledge and facilitating the creation of new creative and scholarly works. The Internet Archive’s digital lending hasn’t cost the publishers one penny in revenues; in fact, concrete evidence shows that the Archive’s digital lending does not and will not harm the market for books.

Like, people like me who know about CSA (Child Sexual Abuse) think that age-appropriate sex, sexuality and relationship education should start at age 8 at the latest, because that’s when the hormonal shifts begin. Like, they cry about the gay or trans agenda coming for their kids, but what it really is about is get certain pieces of knowledge into the kids heads before the hormonal shifts make them more susceptible to fall victims to predators.

And I don’t think there’s any biology or other teacher tasked with sex ed that hasn’t, each year they’ve been teaching it, had at least one student come forward and another CSA case being discovered during the time they teach the subject.

Security Expert Says the Real Problem Is Soft Targets, Not Availability of Guns (‘Soft targets’ need to toughen up against new threats, security expert tells UNO group, Omaha World-Herald, four minutes ago)

Many Americans are suffering from “security fatigue” after 20-plus years of the war on terror and a recent surge in violent crime and mass shootings.

But this is no time to let down our guard, said retired Air Force Col. Jennifer Hesterman, an international security consultant who spoke on “Emergent Threats and Soft Target Vulnerabilities” Thursday at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. The event was sponsored by UNO’s National Counterterrorism, Innovation, Technology and Education Center.

“When you leave home every day, you’re a soft target,” said Hesterman, whose military jobs included a tour ensuring security for Air Force One and Marine One presidential flights at Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland.

Can we stop pretending Putin is not a full-on fascist?

Putin is using minorities inside Russia as cannon fodder for his woeful war in Ukraine.
yahoo.com

The term “Russian Nationalist” fails to convey what Putin and the rest of his regime represent. They are full-on fascists, fully on par with Nazi Germany. The discovery of extermination camps is really the only thing yet to be officially discovered, but no suprise when they are eventually uncovered.

No wonder Putin is a hero to our right wing here in America. He is fully at war with democracy itself. He actively oppresses and eliminates minorities in his country. He measures personal manhood as the means to conquer others, preferably with violence.

Never mind that Putin is the worst military commander in the history of the world. Or that he also ranks as easily one of the worst at state leadership sitting on untold $ Trillions in natural resources while his large population starves and has a economy about the size of Italy. The only thing that really matters is that Putin is a violent thug. And that is what our Republicans value most.

Worldwide investigations of the Catholic Church continue. Scotland has issued a report now.

God was “weaponised” by priests to help silence their victims and justify their abuse, an inquiry report has found.

A report into the psychology of people who abuse children was released by the Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry on Wednesday, with its roundtable experts finding abusers from religious settings “had the capacity for self-delusion, engaging in thinking that was illogical” and that some “handed the moral responsibility for the abuse back to God”.

The 33-page report said it may have been easier for those from religious settings to abuse because of them being able to take advantage of the habitual deference offered to them.

Abusers could rely on being in high regard, using that as a way to silence children, and may have even allowed the abuser to think he had the permission to abuse children and “act with impunity”.

The expert panel told inquiry chairwoman Lady Smith that God was “weaponised” and the Catholic Church “reinforced that sense of permission to abuse children”.

So if a fetus is not a person when in a high occupancy vehicle lane, could not an enterprising provider set up a clinic in a panel van and provide mobile abortion services (in the HOV lane)?

I learned about original drag queen William Dorsey Swann of DC, who may get a street renamed after him.

And then I learned that Samuel L Jackson held the Morehouse board of trustees for 2 days in 1969. I am all *dayum* and *RESPECT*.

I went and got the broken crown pulled off…apparently it was the one that’s been in my mouth for nearly 30 years. There was no infection underneath, so that was good. Going to the dentist is stressful for me, and I hadn’t slept well last night either, so I conked out for 3 hours as soon as I got home. I go back in 2 weeks to get the new crown put on. Oh yeah, the dentist’s office was so cold that I sat in my hot car (111F) for 10 minutes just warming back up from being an ice cube.

The level of ignorance about biology and medicine which has been displayed lately by GOP politicians is frightening.

“There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that ‘my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.”

As more is revealed about the inner workings of Trump’s White House, our next guest lifts the lid on the moral divisions within the Republican Party. In his new book, “Why We Did It,” Tim Miller details his involvement with the GOP and how political staffers were able to justify the new brand of politics, as he explains to Walter Isaacson. (18:23, Tim Miller talks about how he was able, along with others, to simply justify corruption or even their own morals to get Trump elected. Tim Miller was Jeb Bush’s communications director, and afterwards opened an opposition research firm. Even as a gay man, he was able to rationalise working for people who wanted to kill him. He eventually left the Republican Party and his splitting up with former friends.)

The term “Russian Nationalist” fails to convey what Putin and the rest of his regime represent.

There has been way too little discussion of how the breakup of the USSR left a diaspora of over 20 million ethnic Russians stranded beyond the borders of Russia.

And whereas they were a privileged minority in the USSR with access to better jobs, housing, education and career advancement opportunities, they found themselves after the breakup being treated like´, well, minorities.

They are Putin’s Sudetendeutsch or Ulstermen.

Tearing apart the libertarian billionaire idea of “effective altruism”

The Effective Altruism movement, championed by secular thinkers like neuroscientist and podcaster Sam Harris and moral philosopher Peter Singer, aims at getting the most bang for your buck when doing charity. Picking up garbage on the beach for an hour might make you feel warm and fuzzy inside—but wouldn’t it be better to use that hour, for example, to work at your corporate law job or to trade cryptocurrency? With the money you earn in that hour, you could pay dozens of people to clean up the same beach. Even better, you could donate that money to the Against Malaria Foundation, which distributes mosquito nets that could save lives directly.

The logic is certainly compelling: make as much money as you can to do as much good as you can in this life. But a fundamental flaw of effective altruism is that it says nothing about the way that money is earned in the first place.

Indeed. Georgia has a growing, diverse, and politically powerful metropolis in Atlanta, and a lot of rural black voters as well. WV is very old, very white and young people are fleeing the state as it shrinks. Yet it still gets two senators, just like Georgia.

I’m very slowly starting to come around to the “reform/abolish the Senate” way of thinking. The thing of it is, I still think there is value in these states having outsized representation in some place in our government; someone has to protect the rights of the minority… as long as they’re actually protecting rights, not preventing governance at all and actively working to remove rights from the majority. To that end, at the very least, I feel like the filibuster should be a thing of the past, and I hope that someday soon, we can elect senators who aren’t stuck on the “august traditions of the world’s greatest deliberative body” and can recognize the racist and anti-majoritarian nature of the filibuster.

re: #174 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

The quote can also be ascribed to Lenin, who meant it more in that literal sense.

It is a real Bible quote, found in 2 Thessalonians, in which Paul is writing to the church in Thessaly. The difficulty is, it’s located in a section that opens with the following verse:

In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we command you, brothers and sisters, to keep away from every believer who is idle and disruptive and does not live according to the teaching you received from us.

In other words, he’s addressing people who are being disruptive busybodies in the church, and then freeloading off of the church’s generosity. This is basically talking about people sitting on their butts collecting welfare - which nobody supports! So it’s a bit disingenuous for Christofascists to invoke that argument to insinuate that anybody who isn’t working should just get left out in the cold.

When Nebraska abolished its senate in 1932 via a referendum, it was presented as costing too much to have a two-house legislature during the Great Depression. At the same time, another referendum was floated abolishing political parties at the state level or lower (we have political clubs, not parties: power in the legislature rests with the committees, which is why Democrats are chairs of some of the state’s powerful committees despite being in the minority).

That did make the 1934 election in the state the biggest free-for-all in history, as all of the unemployed senators ran against the incumbent representatives, along with new candidates for the new Unicameral legislature.

According to their twisted theology, death of the mother by natural causes is simply God’s will, but an abortion is murder, so as long as there is any hope that the fetus will survive, its life must take priority.

What really takes the cake is that, when we point out the existence of ectopic pregnancies - which, BY DEFINITION, are non-viable in that there is a LITERAL ZERO PERCENT CHANCE that either the fetus or the mother will survive - they start avoiding the question by changing the terminology. They are so insistent in their belief that every viable pregnancy must be delivered that they refuse to call an abortion an abortion, for fear that they will be admitting that some abortions are medically necessary.

Not always that simple: many were settled there in a deliberate policy of Russification, especially in the Donbass, Baltic states and Kazakhstan.

And remember, Crimea was Russian until it was ceded to the Ukrainian SSR in 1956, for purely administrative purposes and at a time when nationality was much less of an issue.

Countries like Lithuania have denied Russians full citizenship because they do not speak the language. Again, if they had migrated there voluntarily, I could see the point of legislation such as that. But there is a broad range of nuances in many of the cases.

But the main point is that whenever Putin wants to come up with a casus belli, he has it ready-made in the form of ethnic Russians whose rights need to be protected from Fascist-Zionist-Western Corporate thugs and exploiters.

@Popehat has a good thread about this. LGBTQ Farmers Often Go Unnoticed. But Their Perspective May Help Reshape Agriculture (Nebraska Public Media, July 11, 2022, with audio of the article at the link)

Growing up on her family’s farm in Coggon, Iowa, Shae Pesek couldn’t envision being able to have the life she wanted here. She didn’t know any queer people in agriculture.

“I really didn’t feel like that was an option for me,” Pesek said. “So, I thought for me, to be out and have a wife and have this out relationship, or like, to even find and date someone, that I needed to move to a city. So that’s what I did. I left, and I moved away for eight years.”

But agriculture called her back to eastern Iowa from San Diego. A while after returning, she met Anna Hankins, who had moved from the East Coast to work on a farm. Together, they started Over the Moon Farm and Flowers in 2019. It’s a direct-to-consumer farm with livestock and flowers.

Hankins said now she and Pesek are the examples, especially for people who can’t or don’t want to leave, that you can live in rural Iowa, farm and be queer.

“I do know for some people, we are for sure probably the first queer couple they have ever interacted with,” Hankins said. “I hope that it kind of maybe expands some people’s worldview.”

Briton Paul Urey, who was captured by Russian-backed separatists in Ukraine, has died in detention, reports say.

The 45-year-old’s family were contacted by the UK Foreign Office, says the Presidium Network, an aid group which has been helping his relatives.

His mother is “distraught and still in shock”, the group says.

The UK says it is seeking urgent clarification from Ukraine and the Russian government on reports of a British aid worker’s death.

“We are urgently raising this with our Ukrainian allies and the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said. “We continue to be in close contact with the family.”

Mr Urey, from Warrington, Cheshire, was detained in the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) in April and accused of being a mercenary.

He was taken prisoner along with another man, Dylan Healy, while reportedly trying to conduct a humanitarian rescue mission on 25 April.

In a real sense these conservatives are just as bad as Trump. Those who accept the election of Biden are fully supportive of the nationwide GOP effort of disenfranchising minority voters. There is no distinction between their domestic agenda and Trump’s domestic agenda. On domestic issue after domestic issue, they stand with Trump, or rather he stood with them, since it was the same agenda pushed by the GOP since Gingrich. Trump allowed them to get it done, except for the effort to repeal the ACA. And that failed only because of Trump’s vocal disparagement of McCain.

On FP, it is a very different story since most traditional Republicans are more in line with Bolton and the neo-cons than with Trump’s deference to Putin.

Oof 2: Electric Oofaloo -

The number of company insolvencies in England and Wales has risen by 40% year-on-year, as more firms are forced under by tough economic conditions.

There were 1,691 company insolvencies in June, the Insolvency Service reports, up from 1,207 in June 2021. That’s also 15% more than before the pandemic, although lower than in May.

Most of June’s insolvencies (1,456) were Creditors’ Voluntary Liquidations (CVLs), in which a firm takes the decision to be liquidated because it can’t pay its bills.

But there were also 3.6 times as many compulsory liquidations in June 2022 as in June 2021, and the number of administrations was 2.3 times higher than a year ago.

When right wing extremists claim that rape of minors is rare, the fact is that it’s far more common than anyone cares to admit - and these are just the cases that are reported to the authorities.

Rape is severely underreported, because cops tend to treat the victims as perps. Instead of giving support to rape victims, the criminal justice system goes out of its way to harass and intimidate the victims, which means they don’t end up cooperating with authorities and the rapists go free to commit still more violent felonies and rapes.

Richard “Dickie” Braswell (R), an elected commissioner in Johnston County, North Carolina has been accused of “indecent liberties” with a 13-year old girl, the Raleigh News and Observer reports.

After 2024, throughout much of the country this article will not be one about “indecent liberties” but a happy marriage announcement.

The argument should be squarely framed around bodily integrity and nothing else (imo).
The natural right to own one’s own body.

Everyone can hate abortion.

Marriage, or some sort of contractual concubinage thing? My presumption is that once women are property the formal “wife” will depend on her social status; e.g. who her father is. Otherwise, a woman taken for sexual activities who doesn’t have sufficient status will be given some sort of secondary status below “wife”. Assuming there is any sort of formal acknowledgement of the arrangement since lip service to Christian monogamy is probably still in the game.

china’s in a bad spot. they just cannot create enough vaccine to immunize a billion people, and because they’ve been so stringent about keeping covid in check, if it ever gets loose, it will burn through the population like covid did in New York City early in the pandemic.

It’s not just that—the government has locked down so many cities, so many manufacturing hubs that it’s only got itself to blame for the economy tanking like this. “Dynamic zero covid” is nearly a complete bust in that respect.
