re: #281 Dangerman

Imo job approval is not a reasonable surrogate for “who I’m gonna vote for in 6 mos”

historically, presidential job approval has been a decent indicator of an incumbent’s re-election chances. Obama in June 2012 and Bush in 2004 were hovering around 48-50%. Trump in June 2020 was down around 40%, as was GHW Bush in 1992. Clinton was well above 50% at the same stage in 1996; as was Reagan in 1984.

That said, this election is a historical outlier. We haven’t had a major party nominate someone three times in a row since FDR. We haven’t had a rematch since 1956. We haven’t had a former president seek to return to the office since TR.

So this was in my mailbox yesterday:

The group behind this is called “Cross America” with a stated goal of sending one of these little crosses to every home in the nation. They have apparently been at it for a few years now.

I don’t recognize any of the faces on their “About”’ page but the group is about as diverse as you’d expect. 🙄

They claim they are not a church, they are just a group of believers focused on fulfilling the Great Commission.

Personally, I’ve never found junk mail to be very persuasive.

Any other Lizards encountered this?

The ones that appear not to be trying aren’t targeted at you. They’re targeted at more vulnerable people, who don’t have the skills or knowledge to recognize the signs of a scam, and are frequently elderly and living off of relatively prosperous retirement accounts.

Multiple surveys and tests indicate the group most likely to fall for on-line scams are Millenials and Zoomers, not elderly people.

Aside from regular lessons about this in magazines aimed toward seniors such as AARP, the younger group tends to have the “I can’t be scammed I’m tech savvy” attitude.

Think of all the major ransomware attacks at corporations. Those weren’t retirees clicking on scammy links.

I was recharging and clearing out Mrs. Jay’s cellphone (which she virtually never uses) and found a junk text asking that same question. I STOPped it and deleted: but there were also a couple of politically-related spam texts there also: I guess cellphone numbers (even the seldom-used ones) aren’t proof against junk mail/call/texting any more.
There was also a text noting a “pending legal request” against the recipient: only it wasn’t directed towards my wife, but to the woman to whom we had sold our former apartment - in 2006! Needless to say, it got trashed, too….

I keep getting texts trying to contact me about selling a property in Philadelphia. An address I never owned and as far as I know have absolutely no connect to. I generally ignore them and suspect that someone put in some paperwork at some point and entered the wrong phone number.

Has not been the first time since back when I had a landline I was getting recorded messages from a bank about loan paperwork that needed to be filed. Was not asking for me, but an unknown name. I think for that one I called back once and left a message that the person they were referring to did not have that phone number and I had no idea who they were.

Topped off by once answering my door to come face-to-face with two local constables who were looking for the person I had purchased the house from. This was over a year after the purchase was finalized so someone’s information was not very up to date.

Trump’s been meeting with crypto guys. This is quid pro quo.

The former President met with the country’s largest Bitcoin mining companies on Tuesday night, according to The New York Times and several photos posted by crypto executives. Trump may be hard-pressed for cash these days given his recent conviction, ongoing legal cases, and, oh yeah, the upcoming 2024 Presidential Election that’s less than five months away. The crypto community, which is searching for allies in D.C. to create friendlier policies, could offer a meaningful source of funding to Trump in this critical final stretch.

Bitcoin is a massive energy hog, causing significant environmental harms.

For instance, in the Finger Lakes of NY, a gas fired power plant had to be run more often to power a server farm doing bitcoin, and it also resulted in damage to one of the lakes, raising its water temp significantly. Everywhere that they do these server farms, the energy use goes off the charts, and causes environmental damage with no significant benefit to the local economy. Heck, server farms can be extremely loud with the fans and cooling systems needed to keep the servers from melting down.

Figures Trump would go all in.

InForum: https://www.inforum.com/opinion/columns/port-burgum-backed-rypto-mining-causing-headaches-for-north-dakota

Bismarck-based Montana Dakota Utilities says a data center near Williston, with its enormous demand for power, is pushing electrical rates higher for its customers. The facility in question, operated by Atlas Power of Montana, was championed by Gov. Doug Burgum when it opened, but I’m not sure many North Dakotans who live in the region of the facility would say it has been a good neighbor.

At one point, the Williams County Commission voted to cut power to the facility because Atlas hadn’t fulfilled certain obligations to the community, including addressing complaints about the noise the data center produces. Now comes news from MDU that the data center’s big power demands are creating grid congestion and driving prices higher for ratepayers, as the Bismarck Tribune reports.

Well if that’s the case it is time to close all of your bank accounts, your online shopping accounts, any accounts you may have with federal government agencies etc. etc. because scammers will literally using anything as a lure to get you to click their link. However, I’ve read about enough issues with PayPal that I don’t use it except for subscription to this blog. Since I just recently renewed, I went in to PayPal and removed all bank account and credit card info. So my accounts should be safer now.

I don’t fault PayPal for scammers attempting to steal the information.

However, I have heard enough warnings about allowing PayPal access to your checking accounts to be wary. I also don’t want to have to login to PayPal regularly to verify no fraudulent charges.

I keep information about my financials closely guarded. And only use online banking services when absolutely necessary; I also clear my cache and cookies after using the financial services. I also never allow services to keep my credit card information. I enter it manually after making a purchase. More work, but less worry about hackers stealing my information.

Being able to ignore spam about PayPal just makes my life easier.

I could be in full denial, but based on post-Dobbs elections and the fact that Trump hasn’t gotten any more popular, I simply don’t believe polling that shows Trump with significant leads in battleground states.

No need to inconvenience yourself for something scumbags are going to send thousands/millions of others in order to get some bites.

Yup. They’d block all action in the Senate to prevent a hearing, let alone a vote to confirm whoever Biden picks - using the same BS claims about election year and letting voters decide.

If the GOP could ram through Barrett in just a few weeks, I don’t see why the Democrats couldn’t get two Justices confirmed in four months.

A Kansas pastor checked out a library’s LGBTQ books so no one could read them

A Kansas pastor’s plan to disrupt a library’s celebration of Pride month by having his congregation check out all the LGBTQ-themed books has, predictably, backfired. But in his first interview since this story made the news, he told me he stood by his actions.

Earlier this month, Pastor Kyle Lammott of Wichita’s Exodus Church revealed his plan on his (now private) Instagram, showing a collection of LGBTQ books checked out from the Andover Public Library. Given the limit of books one person can check out, this appeared to be the work of at least a few people from his congregation.

It’s Pride Month, a good time to recalibrate what it means to love your neighbor. One way you can love your neighbors and your community is to gather together some of the men in your church and go empty the local library of all their LGBTQ+ books. Start with the kids’ books and work your way up. This really is a great way to love your neighbors and serve your community.

re: #58 Mike Lamb

I’m wondering if the statement that Biden is losing support among black voters is based on the poll that had stupidly small sample size.

I could be in full denial, but based on post-Dobbs elections and the fact that Trump hasn’t gotten any more popular, I simply don’t believe polling that shows Trump with significant leads in battleground states.

It is possible that Biden is losing support and rather than those voters going to Trump, they are considering not voting (or voting third party). This election is likely going to hang on turn out more than anything. If Biden gets similar turn out to 2020, he will win in a walk. If Trump’s turn out is closer to 2016 than it is to 2020, he’s got no shot.

My gut still says this is going to end up being a blow out for Biden. I just can’t imagine that a third bite at the apple for Trump is going to generate a lot of support. And as more people tune in over the course of the summer (and starting in 2 weeks when they have the first debate), I think it’s very possible that the bottom falls out of Trumps support. He will be in the news and on TV daily, and a lot of people are going to remember why they don’t like him and want him nowhere near the levers of power.

Low turnout is going to be a real threat.

It’s not that people like Trump, other than his cult members, but rather that people don’t have any interest in voting for Biden.

I keep thinking that the abortion topic is going to drive enough women to the polls so Biden wins, but then again I’m not living in a state where most women are told to be submissive to their husbands.

NC, OH, PA, FL - may not have the numbers of young women turn out to make up for the loss of others who now look askance at Biden.

And if Biden can’t carry both MI and WI then he loses.

There is an uncomfortably high risk that in 2024 enough of the electorate are looking for celeb/entertainment potential, for whom they vote, and just don’t care about competence.

If that is the case then this is the unraveling of democracy.

Not to mention the cross-racial online YouTube and Reddit attacks on young women’s current freedoms and galvanizing a not small percentage of young men to do something about it.

Their mindset is that women have far too much freedom, they feel they are entitled to a hot OnlyFans-type girl, that they should be property and arranged marriages should be pretty much required. This movement is cutting across all ethnicities and directly feeds into the malignant narcissism and entitlement fueling MAGA and the far right religious demo.

historically, presidential job approval has been a decent indicator of an incumbent’s re-election chances.

We haven’t had a former president seek to return to the office since TR.

im late to this party and yes, i agree, historically.

It is possible that Biden is losing support and rather than those voters going to Trump, they are considering not voting (or voting third party). This election is likely going to hang on turn out more than anything. If Biden gets similar turn out to 2020, he will win in a walk. If Trump’s turn out is closer to 2016 than it is to 2020, he’s got no shot.

i dont know if im repeating myself - i cant keep track

i think right now a lot of the ‘undecided’ or loss of support for biden is people taking out their frustrations using the polling system to do so. because pollsters are the only ones asking and listening

- no nominating conventions have happened yet
- most people are still not awake - that’ll come in august / september
- many die hards still think there’s some chance biden drops out or tfg gets replaced (neither will happen)

- after the conventions, i’m pretty sure the polling questions will focus to “now that they’re both nominated, who will you vote for biden or trump”.

then it will start to gel

(this is not 2016 and yes i could be wrong about it all)

Low turnout is going to be a real threat.

It’s not that people like Trump, other than his cult members, but rather that people don’t have any interest in voting for Biden.

I keep thinking that the abortion topic is going to drive enough women to the polls so Biden wins, but then again I’m not living in a state where most women are told to be submissive to their husbands.

NC, OH, PA, FL - may not have the numbers of young women turn out to make up for the loss of others who now look askance at Biden.

And if Biden can’t carry both MI and WI then he loses.

A Florida Atlantic University Poll in Florida shows Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) barely ahead of challenger Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (D-FL), 45% to 43%, within the survey’s margin of error.

With both abortion and marijuana on the ballot, there are a lot of reasons for a big turnout among young Florida voters.

Do you have a link for those surveys? And about your comment about ransomware, do you think only 20 and 30 year olds work?

Ok, listen up you smooth-brained, weapons-grade stupids, because I have neither the time nor the crayons to explain this to you twice…

NO ONE IS COMING TO BEHEAD your melon-hued messiah for any reason, not even his guilty verdicts on 34 felony counts.

Additionally, and this part is super duper important, so catch a bubble and put your listening ears on because you need to try really, really hard to understand this part… and here it is… no one is coming after you either.

Unless of course, you too buy the silence of a porn star you had an affair with ahead of an election and then falsified your business records to hide those payments with an intent to commit another crime, in which case, then yes— they will come after you too.

If you commit crimes, and you get caught, you get into trouble.
Crazy, right.

Now, I confess that I’m not at all sure you read this, or that you can even read at all, but somehow you managed to be the fastest sperm, so anything is possible. If you did read it, and you do understand it, please do not “haul out the guillotine” like daddy said in that email.
Y’all been down the popup gallows path already once before, and it didn’t end especially well for you, remember?

So go ahead and send him more of your money if you have to, but let’s maybe cool it on the whole capital punishment DIY decapitation projects for a hot sec, ok?

Cool, thanks.

… It’s a rising swell, and the sets are starting to produce a lovely peak right next to the channel. The crowd has moved over there, but Jock instead points toward the horizon: “Let’s go, Bill.” I see nothing, but I follow. He’s paddling fast, moving way out, away from the crowd. Eventually, a wave appears—easily the biggest of the day, standing up far outside. It’s physically impossible, I believe, that Jock could have known that wave was coming. But he gets there in plenty of time, right to the heart of the peak, and spins. Everybody else in the water is caught inside by at least forty yards. People are shouting in dismay and disbelief. It’s a demonstration of basically incomprehensible mastery.

Then Jock does something truly weird. He jumps up and goes left. Chun’s is a right-hander—the channel is on the west side of the reef. But Jock sets out east, from the main peak across a very long wall. I punch through the lip near the takeoff and turn to watch. The wave runs off for fifty, sixty yards, no sign of Jock, until he finally comes sailing over the shoulder, way down by Piddlies someplace. It is one of the most counterintuitive things I’ve seen in a lifetime of surfing…

There is no state where the majority of women are told to be submissive to their husbands. And even in those families with that type of relationship, a substantial portion of those women will still vote to protect abortions, then lie to their husbands about it.

Yes, polling has become more tribal, but it remains an incredibly accurate gauge of voter sentiment of an incumbent president seeking re-election. In every example, by election day, their approval ratings were within a point of their share of the popular vote. Trump was at 45% approval on election day and got 46% of the vote. Obama was at 52% approval and got 51% of the vote.

The Shamans and the Chieftain
Modern revenge culture, explained by Mrs. and Mr. Alito
by Timothy Snyder
snyder.substack.com

We have the rule of law so as not to have a culture of revenge.

For much of human history, it was an eye for an eye, as we read in the Bible. In a revenge culture, a chieftain decides who is to blame, and the shamans explain how the blood and chaos is just and necessary.

In the Greek tragedies of Aeschylus and Euripides, the grand problem is escaping from reciprocal violence within and among families. In early discussions of European law, in Icelandic sagas or in the Primary Chronicle of Kyivan Rus, an incipient government regulates revenge, so that it does not continue indefintely.

The rule of law is a solution: if we are all equal subjects of law, then we plead our case before a court, rather than seek after blood. A constitution, like ours, gives flesh to this conception. It might not be perfect: when it is not, we interpret it in the spirit of equality and non-violence rather than grievance and violence. No one can be above the law, and no one can be the judge in their own case. A constitutional order will depend upon judges who understands these fundamental ideas.

I think his team has found that they have a fairly fixed donation response rate (small dollar donations from the same idiots who gave $5 or $10 before), but that there are enough of them that if they spread these out over a few weeks they can catch people on payday and get them to dip into their pockets and keep giving over and over again.

Which, of course, triggered an earworm so I have to share:

one thing that bears mentioning about eye for an eye (lex talonis): the Jews were actually doing something quite radical for the time. They were limiting blood feuds to proportional justice. Someone tore out your eye? You could tear out their eye. You couldn’t engage in a blood feud in which people continued to kill each other ad nauseum, like Hatfields and McCoys.
