Logical Fallacy of the Day: ‘No True Scotsman’

Opinion • Views: 4,160

Today’s logical fallacy goes by the name: No True Scotsman.

No True Scotsman is a logical fallacy by which an individual attempts to avoid being associated with an unpleasant act by asserting that no true member of the group they belong to would do such a thing.

The term was coined by Antony Flew, who gave an example of a Scotsman who sees a newspaper article about a series of sex crimes taking place in Brighton, and responds that no Scotsman would do such a thing. When later confronted with evidence of another Scotsman doing even worse acts, his response is that no true Scotsman would do such a thing, thus disavowing membership in the group “Scotsman” to the criminal on the basis that the commission of the crime is evidence for not being a Scotsman. However, this is a fallacy as there is nothing in the definition of “Scotsman” which makes such acts impossible.

A modern example may be found at the would-be Conservative encyclopedia, Conservapedia. The founder of the site, Andrew Schlafly, has repeatedly used this fallacy to defend his personal concept that Conservatives, by definition apparently, do not practice deceit. When confronted with examples of deceit on the part of Conservatives, he routinely disavows that these individuals are Conservatives at all, on the basis that Conservatives do not practice deceit.[1] He instead assigns them to the group “liberal,” regardless of evidence to the contrary. The use of this fallacy is underlined by the fact that prior to revelations of deceit, the same individuals would have been hailed as good Conservatives.

When all Scotsmen are compared to Scotty, the logical fallacy is deemed null and void. He is the only true Scotsman. /

Seriously though, this is a problem that is found all across the political spectrum and every group on the planet engages in this in some fashion (excepting the Palestinians, who instead of excoriating suicide bombers and terrorists and generally scum of the earth who murder women and children and who think that this is the best that they can ever hope to achieve, will honor them and call them true Palestinian heroes).

OT: RE left - right wing.

Wiki has a sort of history on the concept of left/right

snip...
is a common way of classifying political positions, political ideologies, or political parties along a one-dimensional political spectrum, with the far-left being radical, the Left liberal, the Right conservative, and the far-right reactionary.

snip...
The terms Left and Right have been used to refer to political affiliation since the early part of the French Revolutionary era. They originally referred to the seating arrangements in the various legislative bodies of France, specifically in the French Legislative Assembly of 1791,

snip...
The meaning of the terms Left and Right has evolved over time; it has also spread from a specifically French context to a European (or at least continental) context to a worldwide context.

Now, I can sort of see that. Commit mass murder--get kicked out of the faith. Instantaneous excommunication by homicide.

Unfortunately, little boys are not being told that they will go to hell if they do such things, and the families of those who do such things are not ashamed of their children. And so it goes on.

5 Miami men convicted of Sears Tower attack plot

MIAMI - Five men were convicted Tuesday of plotting to join forces with al-Qaida to destroy Chicago's Sears Tower and bomb FBI offices in hopes of igniting an anti-government insurrection.

The jury in Miami acquitted another member of the so-called "Liberty City Six" in the sixth day of deliberations. Two previous trials ended in mistrials when jurors could not agree on the men's guilt or innocence.

Conversation between Wendell Phillips, the abolitionsit and a clergyman.

"Are you Wendell Phillips?"
"Yes sir," came the response.
"Are you the great abolitionist?"
"I am not great, but I am an abolitionist."
"Are you not the one who makes speeches in Boston and New York against slavery?"
"Yes, I am"
"Why don't you go to Kentucky and make speeches there?"
Phillips looked at his questioner for a moment and then said, "Are you a clergyman?"
"Yes, I am," replied the other.
"Are you trying to save souls from hell?"
"Yes."
"Well--why don't you go there?"

Conservapedia is a sad joke. For a laugh, read their entries for science topics, such as astronomy and geology. Entries for the planets in the solar system contain a boilerplate section for "Problems for uniformitarian theories." Their entry for evolution is particularly comedic, including a photograph of Adolph Hilter, and a sub-section entitled "Creation Scientists Tend to Win the Creation-Evolution Debates."

Ahhh...sort of like the Mubarak/Muslim philosophy that the second a Muslim terrorist homicide bomber, etc, presses the button he is no longer a Muslim, because a true Muslim would never do such a thing, so their is no Muslim terrorism.

I think the "No True Muslim" fallacy is even a more complicated than that. You've mentioned part 1, which is similar to the "No True Scotsman" fallacy: "The second the Muslim commits a terrorist attack like the 9/11 attacks, he's no longer a Muslim, because no true Muslim would do such a thing. OT, but the Obama administration will get the chance to shmooze with other Jew-haters:
US elected to UN Human Rights Council

The US, Belgium and Norway will replace Canada, Germany, and Switzerland, while China, Cuba, and Saudi Arabia will be reappointed to three-year terms on the Geneva-based body.

Hungary and Russia shut out Azerbaijan for one of two seats representing the Eastern European bloc, and five African nations - Cameroon, Djibouti, Mauritius, Nigeria and Senegal - edged out a sixth candidate, Kenya.

Belgium - I wonder what VB has to say?
And Norway, home to Oslo.
Meanwhile, such China, Cuba, and Saudi Arabia will be re-appointed, and Russia is elected. They should be on the permanent watch list. Talk about foxes guarding the henhouse.

It's an "ad hoc" re-definition of a "problem." Here's another example, a prof qives out a questionnaire. He asks the students to rate his teaching. The questionnaire comes back and he's rated a 1 on a 5 point scale. Rather than accept the poor score, he states, the students mistook a rating of 1 with excellent and a rating of 5 with poor. Thus, he gives an ad hoc redefinition of the "problem" so as to allow himself to continue to believe that he's a fabulous teacher...eliminating the "problem" through an ad hoc re-definition.

President Carter is a former nuclear engineer in the U.S. Navy. Nuclear power may be the only thing he knows anything about.

Carter was never a nuclear engineer.
Per Wiki
"His ultimate goal was to become Chief of Naval Operations. Carter felt the best route for promotion was with submarine duty since he felt that nuclear power would be increasingly used in submarines. During service on the diesel-electric submarine USS Pomfret, Carter was almost washed overboard.[6] After six years of military service, Carter trained for the position of engineering officer in submarine USS Seawolf, then under construction.[7] Carter completed a non-credit introductory course in nuclear reactor power at Union College starting in March 1953. This followed Carter's first-hand experience as part of a group of American and Canadian servicemen who took part in cleaning up after a partial nuclear meltdown at Canada's Chalk River Laboratories reactor in 1952.[8][9"

Then his dad died and he resigned his commission.

No True Scotsman is a logical fallacy by which an individual attempts to avoid being associated with an unpleasant act by asserting that no true member of the group they belong to would do such a thing.

Could we coin the term "No True Right-Winger" logical fallacy for those who mistakenly insist that "conservative" and "right-wing" are exclusively synonymous?

Seriously, no one has the slightest clue what this Administration is doing to our fiscal stability and nation's resources by throwing trillions of dollars at pork and programs the nation cannot afford.

The numbers simply do not register.

Meanwhile, I can think of all the B-2 bombers that could be purchased with a trillion dollars (to say nothing of the jobs created/saved (ooh, I hate that term, but since the Obama Administration wants to use it - turnabout is fair play). With each B-2 costing $2 billion, I'd say that we could easily double our fleet with nearly $950 billion left over (from 20 B-2s to 40). We could fully fund the F-22 program, along with the 100,000 people employed on the various production lines - and build another 48 F-22s to complete the full complement of fighters for a cost of just under $7 billion.

Fully fund the reliable warhead replacement program, and that's chump change (let's call it $100 million, even though the costs are far less).

Add in a couple of aircraft carriers, submarines, and Humvee and M1 tank variants, along with a air tanker and heavy cargo aircraft program buy.

So, for well under $100 billion, the military would get its needed upgrades/replacements/technological terrors for the enemies, and we get the jobs and the comfort of knowing that the military capabilities are at peak performance.

Instead, we get a bunch of warmed over Great Society programs that wont solve any problems and will result in unfunded mandates in short order when the money runs out.

And now in on the "I'll never see one fucking dime of either of them" express;

Social Security and Medicare finances worsen

WASHINGTON (AP) — The financial health of Social Security and Medicare, the government's two biggest benefit programs, have worsened because of the severe recession, and Medicare is now paying out more than it receives.

Trustees of the programs said Tuesday that Social Security will start paying out more in benefits than it collects in taxes in 2016, one year sooner than projected last year, and the giant trust fund will be depleted by 2037, four years sooner.

Medicare is in even worse shape. The trustees said the program for hospital expenses will pay out more in benefits than it collects this year and will be insolvent by 2017, two years earlier than the date projected in last year's report.

The trust funds — which exist in paper form in a filing cabinet in Parkersburg, W.Va. — are bonds that are backed by the government's "full faith and credit" but not by any actual assets. That money has been spent over the years to fund other parts of government. To redeem the trust fund bonds, the government would have to borrow in public debt markets or raise taxes.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, the head of the trustees group, said the new reports were a reminder that "the longer we wait to address the long-term solvency of Medicare and Social Security, the sooner those challenges will be upon us and the harder the options will be."

Hey everyone! Haven't been on in a while. The new job is demanding.

It seems mr Schlafly's in denial. It's hard to come to grips with the idea that everyone is fallible. It's something you have to accept about anyone or anything you love dearly. Muslims blow stuff up in the name of Islam. It's a fact of life. By denying that they are "true Muslims" does not address the very real problems with Islamic societies and does not allow honest answers to come forth. The same is with any group. Conservatives, or right-wingers if you want to call them that, sometimes do bad things. This does not make them liberal. Most of the time, the bad things they do are not even associated with them being conservative or liberal. They're just dirtbags.

That's been my point for months. The conservative party is going to have to do a HELL of a lot better than candidates like McCain and Palin. And if they think they can trot out Palin again in 2012, they are going to have the same problems, which is zilch.

re: #292 SanFranciscoZionist

Perennial Democratic presidential candidate William Jennings Bryant, who made the "Cross of Gold" speech, had a winter house in Miami, near where I lived. He probably was most famous as the creationist lawyer in the Scopes Monkey Trial in Dayton Tennessee (of "Inherit the Wind" fame).

"Cross of Gold" was about the old hard-money/soft money debate of the late 19th century. The farmers (who were reliable Democratic voters) were debtors, and wanted soft money (a silver standard instead of a gold standard), and inflation, to make it easier to pay their debts. The Eastern banking establishment wanted hard money and a gold standard, so the debts the farmers owed them would have to be paid in non-inflating money.

Bryant never was elected President, but the federal government eventually split the difference by issuing gold certificates, paper money payable in gold, and silver certificates, paper money payable in silver.

Establishment of the Federal Reserve Bank stabilized the money supply, and ended this debate in public discourse for several decades. There are echos of this debate in the current economic situation, however. We are a debtor nation and owe a pile of money to foreign creditors. The easiest way out of that dilemma is to inflate the dollar, which Obama is beginning to do. The problem is that inflation wipes out the savings and investments of U.S. investors who hold dollars as well. That's the current political controversy.

Cheney would be the CEO of a company while Gore would be the spoiled, half-cocked, crazed loon offspring of the owner who was placed in a position of some power, crafting bizarre ideas and attemting to implement them while everyone else did their darndest to ignore him.

* * * *
Exactly! Gore's dad was a Senator, whose wish was for Albert Junior to become president as his due. And for a while Al Gore pretended to be a serious defense hawk in the Senate before he went bizarro with insane jealousy of Bill Clinton the trailer park President, who outhustled Gore.

Whereas, Dick Cheney was a working class guy who worked his ass off behind the scenes for 4 or 5 presidents, never expecting glory nor fame nor adoration.

Nicks on shuttle don't appear to be serious

The Atlantis astronauts uncovered a 21-inch stretch of nicks on their space shuttle Tuesday, but NASA said the damage did not appear to be serious.

The damage was likely the result of debris that came off the fuel tank shortly after liftoff Monday. The astronauts were inspecting their ship while racing to the Hubble Space Telescope when they came across the nicks spread over four to five thermal tiles, on the bottom of the shuttle where the right wing joins the fuselage.

"It doesn't look very serious," Mission Control said. "Those tiles are pretty thick. The nicks look to be pretty small."

Mayan calendar. I've got an even better date: A.D. 2 billion. That's when the Sun is supposed to become larger and at the very least burn the Earth to a crisp, if not engulf it entirely. After that, it's another 3-4 billion years of the Sun being a red giant before it may nova. It's too small to have a supernova. After that, it's a long and winding road as the Sun becomes first a white dwarf, then a red dwarf, and finally a brown dwarf before extinguishing.

And just exactly which computer systems would you like to have seen fail (as in respond unpredictably) on the rollover to Jan. 1, 2000? The lack of big problems was a testament to the recognition that there might be a problem, and the effort that went into looking for and fixing potential failures.

Actually, life will get uncomfortable in another 1-2 billion years; in about 5 the Sun will run out of hydrogen in the core, and start to swell as hydrogen fuses in the outer layers and helium fuses in the core. Eventually it becomes a red giant, possibly growing to the radius of Earth's orbit, and eventually goes out to a white dwarf

re: #430 Charles

Meanwhile, a big topic on several right-wing blogs today: "Michelle Obama isn't hot."

What the hell is the argument? Now her arms on the other hand! Just listen to Sally Quinn

This is a woman who has the courage to say "I am mom in chief" and make her children and her family -- unapologetically -- her No. 1 priority. She is able to do this because she is so intelligent and accomplished that she doesn't have to prove anything to anyone. She is healthy enough to be able to say, this is who I am, these are my values and my priorities.

She has come under attack for exposing her arms. They are toned and muscular, burnished and beautiful. That has to be threatening to some. For some men, often, a strong woman makes them feel diminished. For some feminists, the idea of an educated woman not taking on a full-time serious job is a frightening throwback.

They are wrong. Nothing could be more empowering than to see a woman with all of the attributes of Michelle Obama embrace her children the way she does. She loves those girls, and she is giving them a role model for the kind of strong woman that she wants them to be. A woman should have the right to choose. In every respect. Having a great education, a job, a career is fulfilling. She has a Harvard Law degree and had a powerful job herself. She will take on projects in the White House that will ultimately prove to be transformational. And she likely will return to her career one day when her children are older.

...As one of the guests pointed out toward the end of the lunch, when the first lady arrived she gave everyone a hug. With those arms. Michelle Obama, whatever her legacy, will certainly always be known as the first lady who made it acceptable for women, in so many ways, to exercise their "right to bare arms."

She is able to do this because she is so intelligent and accomplished that she doesn't have to prove anything to anyone. She is healthy enough to be able to say, this is who I am, these are my values and my priorities.

A few things come to mind:

2. Sarah Palin is the devil because she doesn't stay home and bake

3. When she runs for the senate, she will sell being the First Lady as a

that about made me gag....astonishing hypocricy

Then don't read this:

Quinn is married to Benjamin C. Bradlee, the former editor of the Washington Post, her former boss.

...Quinn began at the Washington Post with very little experience: reportedly called by Ben Bradlee after a report of her pajama party in celebration of the election to congress of Barry Goldwater, Jr., the job interview included the following exchange.

"Can you show me something you've written?" asked Managing Editor Benjamin Bradlee. "I've never written anything," admitted Quinn. Pause. "Well," said Bradlee, "nobody's perfect." [1]

...In June 2008, the Catholic League issued a press release highly critical of Quinn for taking communion at the funeral mass for journalist Tim Russert.[8] In an On Faith blog posting on the Washington Post website, Quinn—who is not a Catholic—wrote that she was "determined to take [communion] for Tim, transubstantiation notwithstanding" and that she "had a slightly nauseated sensation" after taking it.[9] Catholic League president Bill Donohue responded that "Quinn's statement not only reeks of narcissism, it shows a profound disrespect for Catholics and the beliefs they hold dear." Since the incident, Quinn's judgment as moderator of On Faith has come under question by media commentators[10][11] including columnist Ramesh Ponnuru, who wrote that "if [Quinn] does not understand the affront she gave then perhaps regularly blogging about religion for a major news outlet is not the right job for her."

Here's how much of the country agrees with you on Cheney. You can certainly agree we are all wrong, but that is the perception the GOP will have to deal with. Notice the break down follows the split in the county, if you like BHO, you don't agree with Chenay.

"Seventy-two percent of those questioned in the poll released Monday disagree with Cheney's view that some of Obama's actions have put the country at greater risk, with 26 percent agreeing with the former vice president."

Ed Morrisey has finally gone over the deep end, wrt climate change:

[Link: hotair.com...]

[...]The author(s) of the memo suggest the EPA did not thoroughly examine the relationship between greenhouse gases and human health.

“In the absence of a strong statement of the standards being applied in this decision, there is concern that EPA is making a finding based on…’harm’ from substances that have no demonstrated direct health effects,” the memo says, adding that the “scientific data that purports to conclusively establish” that link was from outside EPA.

[...]
Will this kneecap the Obama administration’s efforts to get Congress to impose a cap-and-trade system? Republicans and Rust Belt Democrats will jump to embrace an EPA report that casts doubt on global warming science.

Ed's conclusion (which I bolded) does not follow from the purported memo's discussion (quoted in the second paragraph.)

Since this thread is about fallacies, perhaps someone should inform Ed of his.

In a post above, Avanti said... "His approval rating are even lower then when he was in office, much lower then even Bush."

At the link, here is what the CNN article says... "Seventy-two percent of those questioned in the poll released Monday disagree with Cheney's view that some of Obama's actions have put the country at greater risk."

Notice that this poll has NOTHING to do with Cheney's popularity, or even how his popularity matches up to Bush, when the administration was in office.

And as expected, and likely hoped for by Ed, the commenters over on that HotAir thread are eating up the misdirection. That the commenters over there are unable to differentiate between climate science (the study of the climate) and physiology/medicine is to be expected, but that Ed would encourage such discussion is disappointing.

To cut to the chase... the EPA memo is about the ability of the EPA to regulate CO2 under the provisos of the laws that are normally applied to substances that directly harm the human body (like lead, PCBs, etc.). The memo has no relationship to the science of climatology.

That's hard to say...(one of the problems with the government here and the hate speech codes is that you never really know what'll attract the attention of the censors -- it's pretty much arbitrary and capricious...But, with Galloway, I believe his whole "thing" was to be as flamboyantly displaying his undying support/love for HAMAS as possible -- nothing to do with being timid or reticent..so, he deliberately red-flagged himself (more or less daring the authorities to do something, since he was openly supportive of designated terrorist groups)...so they barred his entry...

Again, your point is well taken. Somebody else has to step up.

The polls are not flawed, your use of them are flawed. The poll you link to above has NOTHING to do with Cheney's remarks on Fox, which was your first contention way up thread.

This article was written on Apr. 28th, Cheney's remarks were on Apr. 27th, and the CBS poll HAD TO BE TAKEN BEFORE ANY OF THAT, or else they would not have the stats to report.

And, the article say nothing about the poll being in regards to his remarks on Fox.

Don't you see the disconnect. In the least, CBS is being coy by reporting two DIFFERENT trains of thought in the same article so people like you will not be able to separate the concepts, the ideas, the actual timeline.

And guess what, they fooled you, and you spent the whole afternoon making yourself look like a blooming idiot.

Carefully, go over your remarks up thread, reread your responses and pay very close attention to the material you linked to.

I understand the logical fallacy, like I said I looked it up when Charles mentioned it awhile back. I was wondering why he had brought it up then.

Oh, I see. Actually this sort of thinking occurs so frequently (it pretty much epitomizes a dogmatic form of argument -- something which can never be refuted, since the person just tacks on yet another ad hoc hypothesis to get rid of any refutation/problem), that it could relate to a lot of things...(including that strange definition of a "true" conservative who never engages in "deceit", etc....)

re: #707 Walter L. Newton

Walter, I said nothing about the Fox remarks in this post. I just addressed my opinion of why the Dems did not reply:

"I think another political decision. They probably think responding would show they give a crap about the comments. Cheney is about the most unpopular politician out there, so I think they'll just let him rant. His approval rating are even lower then when he was in office, much lower then even Bush. He's rallying the base, but that's it."

Then I got demands to show he was unpopular, finally posting the April poll showing low approval, well under Bush'es. I don't know what more I could do to support my opinion that Cheney's approval rating are in fact low.

On topic, if I may;
The fallacy theoretically would not apply if membership in a group was by definition contingent upon adhering to a position relevant to the issue in question. Example, "No one really anti-death penalty eagerly takes a job as an executioner intending to do it well if there are other options." would seem to be a reasonably true statement. Or, "No one sane who really wants to be like Jesus Christ attacks people without provocation" would hopefully be true as well.

But I say theoretically because human beings are very inconsistent creatures much better at justification than forethought, so one cannot really make such statements, at least not any further than "as I understand the philosophy/religion/whatever group's beliefs, they are logically incompatible with that behavior or position, and so bad person X should not be seen to reflect upon it much if at all."
As number of "bad people" starts to approach number of esteemed people in group X, that position becomes untenable.

re: #581 jcm

Are you more knowledgeable than the average citizen? The average score for all 2,508 Americans taking the following test was 49%; college educators scored 55%. Can you do better?

college educators scored 55%? I couldn't find a mention of that on the site, and it seems unlikely given the fact that college educators tend to have Doctorates (or at least a Masters)

Highest Degree Average Score
Doctorate 72%
Master's 64%
Undergraduate 57%
High School 44%
No High School 35%

I figure it likely could be a typo, and you meant educated instead of educators, but the 55% was different than the 57% posted on the site and you still got the 49% for the population correct.

I just wanted to make sure this was not some weak attempt to malign the "intellectual elite". I've never understood why the far right thinks being smart is a bad thing.

93.94 % for me

OK, I know I'm stepping in deep shit here, but I disagree. Being a conservative or a liberal for that matter is a political position. I could accept either wings belief in evolution as being non political as long as it was a private and personal belief and no more.

I think religious belief, or lack there of need not become political. BTW, I don't believe in evolution, nor am I religious, but do not believe it should be a litmus test politically.

You are full of shit.

People dismally fail at civics. You really think "popular" is the way to go?

Civics question:
What form of government do we have?

I had 5 wrong, although I would argue one that was not purely factual, but I'm only an immigrant, so what do I know.../.

re: #713 opnion

As I recall thed point was that we all value our "clan" & see it as almost perfect. "No real....... would do that."
In the face of irefutable evidence , "He's not a real.......then."
Make sense?

This is also why both liberals and conservatives love polls that support their positions, and hate polls that undermine them.

The average American? I'm a Canadian (without a degree) and I got just five wrong. What do we make of that?

No true conservative accepts evolution.

One presumes you mean "as science"....
