Anyone for Windows 7?

Technology • Views: 4,556

I posted about Apple’s Safari 4 browser earlier, but I don’t want to make our PC users feel unloved, so here’s a link to Amazon, where they’re now accepting pre-orders for Microsoft’s shiny new operating system Windows 7.

Windows 7 has been getting good reviews in tech media; Microsoft may have done it right this time. Amazon includes a handy chart to help you figure out which one of three versions is best for you; Home Premium, Professional, or Ultimate.

Yep, that’s what they named it, “Ultimate.”

Why? Is there a Paulian or Tea Party angle to Windows 7 that we don't know about?

If it's as good as advertised, it would be nice to be able to jump from XP straight to 7.

13 lawhawk  Sun, Jun 28, 2009 6:26:46pm

I'm perfectly happy with XP, no reason to change now.

I can't believe that many IT departments are going to do a switch from XP to 7 either. Then again, those bamboozled into doing Vista might just because they're looking to find a better way.

SOP for MS. Pretend that the steaming pile of crap that was released a few years ago really didn't happen and just move on to the next one. They seem to get it "right" (ymmv) every other version.

You just brought back to memory a horrible set of jokes based around "floppy" and "hard" drives...

Way back when... I was working in a lab that had a system built around a Zilog chip (Z80 variant) and 8" floppy drives. It used a early version of DOS, before the one that came with the original IBM PC. Talk about awkward operations! Comparing Safari 4 vs. what we had to use back then... mind boggling changes.

98 = OK

xp = OK
vista = uber crap
Win 7 = Ok

28 lawhawk  Sun, Jun 28, 2009 6:32:13pm

re: #22 Killgore Trout

If only that were true. 95 wasn't exactly smooth sailing. 98 was an improvement... 2000 was a mess. XP was much better, and then Vista was a abject disaster.

I recall that many folks stuck with NT rather than go with 95/98 because it was more stable than either one. MSFT benefitted from market penetration and their OS has become ever more bloated and less functional over time.

There's a reason they call it "Ultimate" -- because the best use for the install disks is to play Frisbee with them.

re: #38 Spare O'Lake

If you turn over computers every couple of years I suppose many people wouldn't make the OS upgrades independently.

Since I've returned to the Mac (since 2003) I've never felt compelled to buy the next version of OSX, but the automatic upgrades within a version are pretty much regarded as necessary, for security reasons if nothing else.

My experience has been 20-30 minutes depending on hardware; don't know how much crap of Vista's that it clean's up, I did an in-place 32 bit upgrade that was flawless then decided to do a fresh 64 bit install so didn't study the registry. Didn't have issues with media on the upgrade and haven't moved stuff back since the re-install.

46 Gearhead  Sun, Jun 28, 2009 6:42:57pm

I'm planning to get it. It's supposed to light enough to run well on a netbook. I have even heard accounts of users "reviving" older machines that couldn't run Vista. I wonder if there's any chance of Microsoft offering a 3 machine license for home users (kinda like the antivirus folks do).

47 Mich-again  Sun, Jun 28, 2009 6:43:29pm

I wouldn't upgrade an existing computer to Windows 7 but if I bought a new computer or laptop I would probably go with it. We had so many problems upgrading this computer to Vista. It didn't like some of the hardware and it really didn't like older versions of MS software. Backwards compatibility issues. But if the computer and all the software were current, I bet it would run like a scalded dog.

Since all of our machines here are XP machines, I doubt very much if they'd upgrade to 7 even if we wanted to.

We could have gotten Vista to run on one or two of them if we'd so desired, but we did not.

I'll wait until I see 7 running on other people's computers before I get it in any case. I'm pretty sure I can still buy an XP machine if this one has a sudden catastophic failure.

Tested Windows 7 at work. It seems to work well. We use Vista at work, and there has not been one problem. I never 'got' what all the negative hype was all about. Then again, I'm not reflexively anti-Microsoft. I kind of like the company. Direct Access is a new Microsoft technology that allow one to get access to the work network without a VPN. Windows 2008 server R2 and Windows 7 are needed to implement this. Once 7 comes out. I'll set up a test for this. This would be huge for our workplace.

Is Sharmuta around tonight?

71 RadicalRon  Sun, Jun 28, 2009 6:54:26pm

Mandy, et al: I found this little tidbit tidbit regarding the Evil Empire's new cash cow:

Windows XP users need to know that regardless of which edition they currently have installed (Windows XP Home, Windows XP Professional, or Windows XP Media Center Edition) and regardless of which edition of Windows 7 they are moving to (Home Premium, Professional , or Ultimate), they will need to perform a clean install, whether they buy the upgrade or full version ( emphasis moi) . The hassle of backing up applications and user data will fall on the user; a clean install will not back up anything. Using Windows Easy Transfer, users can copy their important files and settings to an external USB stick, external hard drive, or DVD, and then move the data back after the installation.

The installer will verify that XP is genuine and Windows 7 will have to be installed on the same partition as the XP installation. The good news is that Microsoft is allowing XP users to buy the cheaper upgrade version if they want to (Microsoft typically lets owners of the two previous releases of Windows to do this, in this case XP and Vista).

Windows Vista users can follow multiple upgrade paths to Windows 7. As was the case when upgrading from XP to Vista, you will only need to perform a clean install if you are going to a version that is lower on the food chain. For example, if you are going from Windows Vista Ultimate to Windows 7 Home Premium, you would do a clean install. If you are going from Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Ultimate, you do not need to do a clean install. When you switch to a higher version, you're adding on the existing functionality, but when you're going to a lesser version, you're taking away functionality, thus the need for a clean install.

Clean installs will also have to be performed when upgrading from a 32-bit version to a 64-bit version, regardless of edition. Unless the user chooses to repartition or format the current partition, Vista's files from C:WINDOWS will be preserved under C:WINDOWS.OLD, just as when upgrading from Windows XP to Windows Vista.

I have not-so-fond memories of OS/2. I was hired to train a system based on OS/2 (WARP, actually), running MS Office in the Windows emulator. And the company didn't want to upgrade its DOS-based proprietary software either, so there were a lot of compatibility issues. The whole thing was a big, temperamental turd.

Oops. That's Vista Ultimate.

I'm always impressed by the amount of computer expertise here. Scary, how far behind I've gotten after being a "first adopter" in the Stone Age.

A quick question, for any and all: I am more happy with XP than I have been with any Windows OS, ever. Maybe luck, but still. How long can I theoretically use XP before it becomes a drawback? My needs are very low-tech...word processing, Web, family photos, audio editing in Audition, and that's about it. No 3-D graphics or games.

Thanks for any advice! (PS: My 80-year-old mom's replacement computer came with Vista, and it's almost impenetrable to me. Like a foreign language. Whenever my XP-ability dies, I would love to leap to 7 or whatever without spending another minute of my life on Vista. Is that workable?)

When you go to a 64 bit processor your XP will be a thing of the past. My experience -- don't be afraid of Vista ultimate. Don't know about the other versions.

I have an XP machine on my desk at work that we put into service in 2003 or 2004. It still runs great. You might run out of hard drive first. As for the Win 7 upgrade, I have not used Win 7 yet, but it's going to be a lot more like Vista than XP, but more secure and efficient (again, second-hand knowledge, here).

M$ is one of the few firms that have earned my "I will never invest in you and be a partner in your firm" award for their morals. Citibank is another, there are more. I am forced to run M$ product in some incarnations because some applications such as Bloomberg in its native mode and Fidelity Active Trader Pro demand it. XP is just fine thank you. I would still be runing Windoze 2000 except for one app that wanted XP. Translation, maybe someday I will be forced into it. But till then, its XP running under Parallels. The balance of the M$ products can take a hike too. There is no need to upgrade in my mind. Actually quite the opposite.

Good evening.

Geez, I go out of town for a week on vacation and a big star like Billie Mays dies. That and a a couple other people I heard of once or twice.

I see the market had a tough week overall.

This week expect to see that unemployment is still increasing, the dollar wil keep dropping in value (thus oil will rise). 10 year treasuries are at 3.54% down a bit from a week or 2 ago but still up about 30% from April.

Had enough of the hope and change yet?

Most commercials are filmed and produced at least months in advance of air dates. So don't take it as trying to cash in.

Do people STILL upgrade perfectly good working computers to a new Microsoft operating system? Gee, after all the pain and lost productivity past releases have caused, you'd think there wouldn't be anyone left who'd be willing to take the risk. The potential upside is dwarfed by the potential downside and the batting average ain't encouraging. I know plenty of people who just gave up an bought a new computer after a bad OS upgrade.

Sales projections may prove optimistic.

Chicago AM radio ROCKED.

I lived in Albany, Georgia before I moved to Pennsylvania in the 70s. The radio station selection in Albany consisted of a top 40 am station, religious am stations, public radio on fm as well as a black station on fm. When I got to Pa I was starting high school and WDVE out of Pittsburgh introduced me to rock music. That's when I heard The Who, Pink Floyd, Led Zep, and others.

To "park" a satellite, it would have to be out one earth circumference, (24,000 miles)too far that type of surveillance.

True. I should have known that. I like watching for satellites traveling across the sky early dusk when I'm out of the city lights which isn't often.

But I could see some inventive news agency using a tethered weather balloon with a camera mounted to it filming video of an event they couldn't get close to on the ground. How hard could it be to do that?

As for new computer buyers, Acer/eMachines/Gateway, Asus, Averratec, Dell, HP/Compaq, Sony and Toshiba are participating in the Free "Vista to 7" upgrade program, good thru 1/31/2010. Pre 6/26 purchasers are more limited by time. The $49.95 Home Premium upgrade is only good thru 7/11/2009. Basic Sys Req is a 1Ghz CPU and 1Gb RAM - Double, more or less, those figures and I am sure it will work well for casual users. To use the old Chevy analogy I have used - xp = '55, VISTA = '58, 7 = '64 Chevelle. That is all.

If you have a spare computer (of hard drive) you can download a beta version of Windows 7 here and try it out. It's good till June 1, 2010.

Actually, just install it on the PC with Windows XP to a separate partition an it will install with a dual boot, you choose which version of windows to boot to.

Oh hell, dont remind me!

I tripped over a stainless steel benchtop when I was 15 and scraped the skin off my shin down to the bone. My older bro took me to the emergency dept where they stitched it all up, then gave me a TB shot in one cheek and the BIG OLE Needle of penicillen in the other, Shit it hurt. I limped out of the room and my bro says, "Is that from the stitching?" Hell, no, I say, its the bloody needle shot in my arse that hurts! I got no sympathy!

You're making me go weak here. Not the needle part. The shin to the bone part. Not a nurse. Could never be a nurse or doctor.

-200/-300 early, probably stabilize around -150/-200 for the day. No data to back this up, just my guess. If the market was in Pre-Obama days, I'd expect 1K plus losses but given we're so far off the highs, I'll stand by my lower numbers. I think it's going to be bloody regardless.

That's roughly my take. The response from the market has to hit the admin right in the kisser and I hope the Senate is watching.

Usually you set up partitions when you first format the drive and install windows, however, it is also possible to add a partition after the fact. It is better to make a separate partition for each OS, but may work fine without, I haven't tested that.

You may be pretty close, but we could also be a little surprised. The vote in the House was too close for comfort for the administration, and the Senate looks to be pretty queasy about all this. Small sell-off Friday could make your prediction a pretty good one, but we might also see a small increase tomorrow with the big sell on Tuesday.

After watching a few clips of Michael Jackson interviews these last few days I have to say that the movie "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" with Johnny Depp is one-half a remake of the original Willy Wonka movie, and one-half a biography of Michael Jackson.

I have watched the Depp movie dozens of times with the kids, its one of the great kid films ever. But not until MJ passed did I get the impression it was about him. But the two characters have lots in common.

Good evening y'all!
I'm running VISTA because when my XP motherboard and then Hard Drive failed, Best Buy - after trying for three months couldn't get a new motherboard or hard drive that wasn't defective.
So they gave me full credit for the price I paid for my XP-Pro, gave me a hot shot Vista and their "black tie" warranty (if any software or hardware goes down for 3 years after purchase, they will come to MY house and Fix or Replace it FREE).
I didn't want Vista, but - contrary to all y'all who are technilogical genuses, I've actually come to like Vista. I know, I know. But I do. Course it came with 5 Gig RAM which helped and I don't do any web designing or anything, just use it to surf the net (ok, mostly just to come to LGF) and e-mail. I AM NOT going to upgrade to Billy Gates 7.

Which is WHY, "Back in the Day" the way to go was:

1. Buy (Borrow?) the LP.
2. Tape it within the first 5 or so plays.
3. Play the Tape after that, putting the LP to sleep.
4. If/when the tape breaks/gets melted - Re-Tape from the LP.

When CD first got popular, the way to go was:

1. Buy (Borrow?), the CD.
2. Tape the CD for Car Play, Play the CD at home, unless borrowed.
3. If/when the tape breaks/gets melted - Re-Tape from CD.

Today.

1. Burn Backup Copy CD or Download to iPod or MP3.

Yes but there is something special about taking the album off the shelf, taking the record out and playing it on the record player while reading the cover and looking at the art work. The covers were also great for cleaning your pot on.

What small change in 7 would make it better for someone like me?
Serious question here - I'm not quite as tech stupid as I frequently appear.

Not Bagua, but....

Just the fact that Win 7 doesn't ask you 3 times for approval every time you click a button is a huge improvement (yeah, I'm exagerrating, but you know...). It's much better at assessing what is actual user interaction vs. malware hi-jack situations.

Good question, I am comparing it exclusively to XP Pro as I refused any version of Vista. I know it deals with many of the nagging things Vista users complained about, and is less of a resource hog.

A lot of what I like now is the way windows, task bar works to operate multiple programs and windows. The Snip tool is very handy. Beyond that it appears very stable, and this is only a Release Candidate, Vista was a real problem until the first service pack.

Sometimes I think we've crossed the line into Oligarchy. The Professional Political Class we have now is damn close to it, if not it.

Quite Concur. I've also gotten a sudden surge of enthusiasm for anti-tax rallies. Yes we have to keep racists away from them, but remarks like what the Cal Speaker made show why they are needed. The legislatures need to be kept on notice: "Behave like bunch of robber barons and you'll get bounced out on your asses!"

Well first someone will have to show President Obama where Honduras is on a map.
Then someone will have to explain why the President of Honduras was the subject of a coup: he disregared the Honduran Congress and the Honduran Supreme Court.
Then someone will have to try to explain to him why Hugo Chavez really isn't such a nice fellow after all!

re: #382 realwest

Well first someone will have to show President Obama where Honduras is on a map.
Then someone will have to explain why the President of Honduras was the subject of a coup: he disregared the Honduran Congress and the Honduran Supreme Court.
Then someone will have to try to explain to him why Hugo Chavez really isn't such a nice fellow after all!
(word is that Chavez had all of the ballots in the unconstitutional election impounded by HIS troops, Air Force).
And even then, I'm STILL not sure what President Obama's response will be to any invasion by Venezuela.

Obama's media allies are still pushing the misleading "military coup" theme, though there have been some surprising exceptions. The BBC, for example, played it straight and at least one AP story pointed out that the arrest was ordered by a lawful and constitutional process. The media and the *spit* state department know what the facts are and that there has been no unlawful action by the Honduran congress and courts. This kind of deception and propaganda is pretty ironic, not to mention hypocritical, coming as it does from people whose favorite fantasy was too see federal marshals ordered to arrest Bush while he was still in office.

As for the tactical situation, Hugo's regular forces are too far away to intervene directly and they might not try even if they could. What he can do is fly goons, weapons, and propaganda teams into neighboring Nicaragua for infiltration into Honduras.

As for the State Department, I wonder if Hillary actually understands the situation well enough to explain it to President Obama.
Either way, as some wag put it upthread, he'll probably just vote present anyway.

Which mean's Panetta is only a "smart" as his briefers in the CIA. He doesn't know what questions to ask to find out how the data is being filtered when it gets to him.

Here’s how President Obama concluded an interview in the Oval Office today:

“But, look, I just think that what we've been doing over the last six months is getting people back into fighting trim. This is a town where there was just a belief that nothing could get done....I'll use just the workout metaphor, and that is, you know, when you start training again and you're pushing your body a little bit harder, sometimes it hurts. But if you keep on at it, after a while your body adjusts. And I think that's what's happening to politics in Washington. Folks have been sitting on the couch for a while, and now they're starting to feel like, hey, you know what, I can run. And that's why we're getting stuff done.”

All hail our new personal trainer! Until he entered the White House, everyone was a mere couch potato.

Oh yeah! I grew up in upstate NY (just outside Rochester - town called Penfield). We couldn't wait to take trips to the City (yep, capital C for a reason).

I was eighteen when we took a trip to Manhattan. While other kids were hitting the bars (well, it was legal then), I dropped by an antique shop. I bought a British officer's swagger stick (India, Raj) that had a dagger inside. The shop owner wrapped it in paper, and told me to take it right back to the hotel.

Walking back, a NYPD officer walked by me...stopped...turned around and said, "Mind if I ask you what you've got there?"

Being dumb, eighteen, and from upstate, I said, "Sure officer, look! It's a really cool British officer's swagger stick with a dagger inside."

He took a look...looked at me and said, "Well, if you're not a commissioned officer in the British Army, you better get that back to wherever you're staying and put it in the closet until you get ready to go home."

Wouldn't happen today, of course, but that NYPD cop was a pretty good guy!

The way he was removed is legal and actually prevented a leftist coup. You can't look at this in terms of how the American system works. They specifically set up their constitution in such a way to give them an immediate and legal remedy for political coup attempts.

I'm not some well off Democrat (or Republican for that matter) with a position in government or that within an NGO. It's just my opinion after working all day on a project for my freelance work while I'm sitting here having a mug of vodka tonic.

That is all.

Whoa. Never said you were a hypocrite, Gus. My point was that we all fall into the habit of hyperbole, and I'm trying to break myself of it as well. I'm in a similar financial situation to you, and a decade older. It sucks.

I certainly apologize for offending you. It was the farthest thing from my intentions.

Hmm "This is a town where there was just a belief that nothing could get done..." so why did he bring aboard mostly "inside the Beltway" types and Clintonistas to his administration?
I seriously thought he meant it about Hope and Change. I didn't think (and still don't think) he was qualified or experienced enough to be POTUS. But I always thought he'd bring in new minds, fresh voices and all and he didn't even say "present" on that one, he just sorta raised his hand!

The way he was removed is legal and actually prevented a leftist coup. You can't look at this in terms of how the American system works. They specifically set up their constitution in such a way to give them an immediate and legal remedy for political coup attempts.

Looks like it worked too, but Obama will never say anything like that. He likes leftists and doesn't much care how they gain power. He's a true acolyte of Alinsky.

The Honduran constitution prohibits alteration by referendum, which is what was proposed and attempted-their military did what they swore to do, protect and defend it. And STEPPED BACK--as they should've. This admin was wrong in condemning that procedure, and they damn well were aware of that.

I hope this is a false report:

'Kiwi' arrested in Iran?

A leading Twitterer known as "Persian Kiwi" is feared to be have been arrested in Iran.

Unconfirmed reports says Persian Kiwi, also known as PK, has been seized by authorities, while others say his or her Twitter account has been hacked by the Iranian Government.

It is unknown whether PK has any links at all with New Zealand.

Iran has been in turmoil since disputed elections earlier this month allowed President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to remain in power. Despite a crackdown on dissent, thousands of people have protested and circumvented the country's strict censorship rules by using Twitter.

PK has been providing an at times minute by minute account from the streets of Tehran.

The "Anonymous Iran" website has started a forum headed "Persian Kiwi Arrested".

"Pls stop the rumours about pk, no one knows anything, they are probably safe and keeping radio silence," said one contribution yesterday.

"PK2 is not real, her writing style does not match up with the old one (too militant to be PK) and she posts with odd keywords. PK always used #IranElection. persiankiwie might be real and I noticed OxG was attempting to get identifying information out of that person, stuff only PK would know. so stay tuned on that one"

Thank you VERY MUCH for the link!

My personal situation is that I have a Sony SZ laptop with a 2.4GHz Core 2 Dual and nVidia. I'm planning on upgrading around April, but Sony seems to have switched to ATI which I don't like. I was as calm as I could be, and some of my cousins were there to take me to their home, to sleep over..but when it is family or friends? I need to be taken off the chandelier, so help me!

There was no way I was going to vote for Gore in 2000 and couldn't stand Lieberman either. Same deal with Kerry who I think is a puke traitor which is why I voted for Bush in 2004. It's really very safe.

General Electric washer. Cost $699 4 years ago, repair would've been $600. New machine $699. Go figure. I was tempted to find a "used appliance" place & see what they had that was older ( and made well) and what their guarantee would be. Decided I needed to do laundry sooner, than later.

re: #554 Cygnus

And now the first flight's been delayed AGAIN! This must be driving the 787 buyers nuts.

Quantas cancelled 15 planes, Virgin Atlantic wrote a nasty letter and may cancel. It's already 2 years late, and the airlines have to keep older airframes flying they planned to retire eating up scarce money.

It's not good, rumors up at Lazy B are it may be several more months.

Bit like Turkey, isn't it? (Just with a lot less at stake.)

You'd think that Obama would actually study Honduran law before prattling on about upholding the sanctity of the rule of law.

His reaction is an embarrassment. It's no wonder Iran and NK feel so confident slapping him around.

LOL! They are all freak shows, aren't they? I used to go to a "nice laundromat" with a fussy neighbor on Sunday mornings. Least freaky time we had found. Fussy neighbor ran an empty load of soap & water before he'd put his clothes in! LOLOL!

True! Last one I went to there was some guy wearing a bra under his shirt. Then you get the staring. For some strange reason people that go to laundromats a lot like to stare.

Maybe there's a normal laundromat out there but I have yet to find one.

It's been awhile, I don't think anything has been this delayed. Part of the cost of outsourcing manufacturing and leaving only the final assembly at Everett. Some of the fuselage section were off by quite a bit.

That's the only place I gambled on my little vacation in May. LOL Didn't win anything this time but a few years back I hit $50.00 after two pulls on a quarter machine right before our plane loaded. They didn't have the coupons then. I just threw all those quarters in my purse. Not a big win but it sure was fun.

Ore. man upset by McDonald's order calls 911 repeatedly

According to a tape of the 911 calls released by Clackamas County 911, a man initially told a dispatcher that he was at the McDonald's near the intersection of Southeast Sunnyside Road and Southeast 82nd Avenue and needed help. The man said he had paid $10 in the drive-thru but only received a single burger and a fry before he was told to pull around.

"Sir, this is not a police matter," the dispatcher told him. "You need to take it up with the manager of the McDonald's."

But a person who identified himself as Martin called back demanding that dispatchers send a police officer to the scene and threatening to sue.

"This is a 911 emergency," the person said. "I got robbed for eight dollars."

"Sir, 911 is life-and-death only," the dispatcher said. "If you do continue calling 911 you will be arrested for misuse."

"Well, arrest me at (expletive) 82nd and Sunnyside Road," the caller responded. "Please send a cop right now. I swear to God all my life..."

Seattle still has polite traffic culture, much less than it used to be.
If a line of cars are exiting a parking lot, folks on the road will each let one car from the parking lot in, in front of them.

It's not strange at all. It's easy to look back on that time, once one is safely out of it, with nostalgia. Especially easy to view it with nostalgia when it's also looking back at a time when we were younger, too.
But as you say, no-one having lived that life willingly wants to go back to it.

I think it's an important experience to have had. I know for myself it continues to influence how I see the world and others around me, and it makes me very grateful for what I have.

Nice. My theory is one per one. One passes you let the other go. When you get to an "entering traffic" location you hit the left lane. You see a cop that pulled someone over, you also merge left. Guess some people never got the memo. ;)

Speaking of Microsoft - has anyone else found their Bing! advertisements incredibly annoying? These are the ones where someone asks another person a simple question, and the person responds with a bunch of meaningless, unrelated spew. This happens over and over again, far beyond the point where I've started screaming "OK, I get it already! Now shut up!" at the television.

The problem I have, beyond the incredibly awful presentation, is that the "problem" they're trying to portray simply doesn't exist, in my experience. They're saying that when you use other search engines, they hand you back a pile of unusable junk unrelated to your question, which is about as far from the truth as you can get. This is obviously a campaign designed by a marketing department that has created a problem out of thin air where none exists.

The ads also spend 99% of their time attacking other search engines, with a single vague hint about why tacked on at the end - "Bing! is a decision engine!" What the hell is that? When I went to the Bing! website, it turned out that it works just like any other search engine - there's nothing to distinguish it from, say, Google other than the graphics in play. In fact, two test cases I threw at it produced exactly the same list of answers as Google did - an indication that Bing! is probably tapping in to Google for at least some of it's results, as they haven't had time yet to build the extensive server farms and databases that make a large search engine workable.

In my opinion, Bing! will fail epically. And it's ad campaign certainly won't help it at all. It gives me no reason to use the product.

Amen to that. Another thing that bothers me about Bing is that it seems to presume you want to find a business to buy something from. I occasionally do, but 90 percent of my Internet use is for news and self-education, and I haven't seen a single way Bing outdoes, or even matches, Google in that regard.

Bing thinks I'm a consumer, period. Wrong. The whole concept rubs me the wrong way.

Windows 7 has been getting good reviews in tech media; Microsoft may have done it right this time.

So did Vista. The tech press couldn't get enough of that heavenly Microsoft goodness. I am literally "not buying it" until it's about two years old, SP1,2,and 3 have been released, and a generation of happy users assure me that I won't be sacrificing data and digital property both to another hastily prepared but well-received bit of full-priced public beta test software.

Those SOBs in Redmond aren't getting another dime until using their OS isn't an exercise in futility, and while I'm at it, I hate HATE hate their misbegotten "we will change things and you will follow" Office "upgrade".

How exactly would Venezuela invade Honduras? They aren't contiguous; far from it. Does Venezuela really have the naval or air power necessary to invade in force? I could see them making mischief alright, but I think a full-on invasion is beyond their military capabilities.

I'm already running RC and pre-RTM versions of Windows 7 (I'm posting this from a machine running pre-RC Build 7057), and I've been pretty pleased with it. MS has "componentized" the OS this time, which means it doesn't load so much stuff at a time, which makes it run faster and more efficiently. I know someone that's running it on a 1.7GHz P4 desktop (six-year-old machine), and he reports that it runs very well. One of the big improvements over Vista is that it runs much better than Vista on older hardware, and MS even claims that it runs better than XP on some older stuff.

My analysis: a very good one. Both my computers are more faster with W7 than WVista or WXP. And in my notebook, I had a problem with the wireless connection. Neither XP or Vista did a good job to solve it. Windows 7 solved it right at the first time.

And I have a dual-boot system in my desktop pc. Windows 7 64 bits and Linux 64 bits. Very good.

The XPS had the "black screen" thing, which the tools at MS still can't explain. The Studio is unstable and the Internet constantly crashes. The browser has been stripped and re-loaded over and over. The laptop wouldn't download updates to the Norton. For a year. The techs at Dell had to fix it over and over. The XPS crashed two days ago and I have the Geek Squad folks coming over to fix it. This after I spent two hours on the phone with a Dell rep, ran a system restore- which didn't work- and finally re-loaded Vista after saving the pics and Word files to a flash drive in safe mode.

Vista should come with a warning label.
