Video: Has the Earth Been Cooling for 10 Years?

Environment • Views: 3,211

Here’s an excellent video presentation by potholer54 that debunks several very common false claims made by climate change skeptics, tracking them back to original sources and showing the deceptive tactics used by the denial industry. For example, the claim to which the title of this post refers (“Has the Earth Been Cooling for 10 Years?”) is based on a deliberate misinterpretation of temperature data.

Talk about hings heating up!

reuters.com

The explosion came a day after India and Pakistan agreed to meet for high-level talks in New Delhi on February 25. New Delhi suspended a four-year-old peace process with Islamabad after the Mumbai attacks, blamed on Pakistani-based militants.

Police said the bomb was hidden in a bag left in the German Bakery restaurant, a favorite of Jewish and European visitors, when it was full of tourists on Saturday evening.

“We heard a big noise and we all rushed out. The impact was so much that there were tiny body parts everywhere,” said Vinod Dhale, an employee at the bakery.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, which also wounded 32 people. But any sign of Pakistani involvement would worsen relations between the two nuclear rivals and further destabilize a region overshadowed by war in Afghanistan.

“Let us wait for the forensic report before we draw any conclusion,” said Home (interior) Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram. “Let us not speculate,” he urged reporters and promised that his ministry would issue an official statement on the attack every 4-6 hours.

Debris was strewn all around the bakery, located near an ashram or religious retreat which is also frequented by foreigners, and a Jewish center. The impact of the blast knocked the bakery’s sign off, blew out windows and left a large crater inside the restaurant.

“It (the bomb) was under one of the tables … We transferred lots of people to the ambulances … there is no German Bakery any more,” one foreigner, short of breath and resting against a wall, told local CNN-IBN television.

“God is still up there”… I’m surprised to see someone so explicit about the motives behind their denialism. AGW doesn’t exist because God would never allow such a thing.

And I’m totally done with all these discussions about whether the earth is “warming” or “cooling” - just call it climate change and be done with it. Some of it is man-made, some of it is not - we know the properties of the chemicals we release into the atmosphere. etc etc.

Well God promised he would never try to wipe out humanity with a gigantic flood ever again, and global warming means the ice caps melt which means, that waters rise, which means floods that might put humanity in danger, and if either G-d is wrong or the data is who are you gonna believe?

No ,, the earth is WARMING ,, so call it that

“Climate change’ is too broad a term. It’s a catch all phrase open to anything one wants it to be

I bet it takes more energy to run an ice age (all the precipitation has to be evaporated in the first place, & then transported on the wind, both taking energy).

Maybe that’s where we are headed.

If I might quote Yatzhee…

“The root problem with Christianity is that their good is suppose to be all powerful and benevolent, it sounds like a easy sell but when life turns completely to s*** you have to come up with all kinds of whacked out reasons for why kindly old Jahova saw fit to run over little Timmy with a combine harvester and leave him in a state of vegetative limbless agony for 18 years. Ancient cultures didn’t have that problem, they knew their gods were a bunch of drunken lunatics who ran around boning their close relatives and turning the gooleys into fruit bear trees.”

It’s really simpler than that… there is a problem with mystical thinking, which is defective thinking and carries no relation to critical thinking and logical thinking.

I guess you can only grit your teeth and bear it.

I have a strong dislike for people who are antisemitic but that doesn’t mean I can’t think that Ride of the Valkyries sounds awesome during helicopter attack scenes in movies.

Though I suppose there’s another another level of complexity to the whole thing when the person involved is still alive….

Tales of American entrepreneurship:

Just took my car out of the garage for the first time in over a week. I had to go get an essential prescription before the pharmacy closed, so I just powered through the snow drift into the minimally plowed alley. I figured I’d have a fun time getting back in the garage, e.g. get a heart attack shoveling my way in.

There were two guys with shovels digging out cars as I came to the end of the alley. I asked what they would want for clearing the ice and snow drift in front of the garage. “Twenty bucks, and we’ll be done by the time you get back.” Deal. So I came back and they had cleared the entire area, including my back gate, which I didn’t even ask for.

Two Hopkins med students making money for books. Tim and Tom. Nicest guys you could meet. And when they saw the old BMW motorcycle in the garage that I don’t ride anymore (hard to accommodate a service dog on a bike), they offered me top dollar to buy it. So I spent twenty dollars for good work and stand to make a nice little cash bundle on the bike.

I have always depended on the kindness of strangers and serendipitous chance encounters.

God bless Americans.

I think it’s kinda odd that Fox news is reporting this “outrage” relying mostly on anonymous sources. I don’t think it’s going to be that bad for him unless somebody uncovers some other racist agenda from him. He is a Ron Paul supporter so it’s a possibility.

He also does standup comedy and hangs out with comedians a lot so I suspect that he’s used to speaking in a less PC tone, as comedians tend to do. It’s also a possibility that this is a manufactured incident designed to generate publicity for himself.

I did not know who this boy band musician was until this quote appeared and I put his name to some songs I don’t like but recognized. That said, his comments were not racist. A drunk guy’s words were unguarded and vulgar, not for the first or last time. The language was vulgar in a racist way instead of a sexist or scatological way, but they ultimately carry no real meaning, given the context.

It was more racist when Teddy Kennedy or Barney Frank used silver tongued and pleasant words to say that various minorities are like children who need to be looked after by benevolent patron saints like themselves.

Charles,
I applaud your efforts to clear the air IRT global warming, climate change, or whatever it’s being called these days. With that being said, I think your efforts, while valiant, are largely falling on deaf ears. It isn’t that the “science” isn’t behind you; anyone who does an iota of research knows that the earth is warming and has been for quite some time. It isn’t that your arguments aren’t well reasoned or well cited; you clearly stay on topic and don’t rant an rave like a lunatic. The problem with this issue is that there has been the “appearance” or “perception” of scientific impropriety which has been trumped up by the talking heads (Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, etc.). We live in a world where perception is reality. Unfortunately, many people do not want to take the time or put in the effort needed to properly educate themselves on any issue. They would rather let someone else do all the thinking for them and then press the “I believe” button and call it a day. As much as it sucks, I don’t think this attitude towards science or important issues is going away anytime soon. So it doesn’t matter if there is irrefutable scientific proof that the earth is going to be 100 degrees Celsius in 50 years or whatever the prediction; people don’t give a s*** because someone has told them not to. Present company excluded, we live in a world of morons, the likes of which are easily swayed by Rush, Sean and Glenn. The only real solution to this intelligence problem is to convince the populace one person at a time. Thank you for fighting the good fight and helping the cause. I applaud your persistence and maybe that is all we need; a start.

Phil Jones still thinks that most of the global warming in the second part of the twentieth century is anthropogenic. But in his very recent BBC interview, he also acknowledges that the MWP may have been as warm, that there have been similar rises in temperatures in the past, and that there are many uncertainties:

Q”When scientists say “the debate on climate change is over”, what exactly do they mean - and what don’t they mean?

A. “It would be supposition on my behalf to know whether all scientists who say the debate is over are saying that for the same reason. I don’t believe the vast majority of climate scientists think this. This is not my view. There is still much that needs to be undertaken to reduce uncertainties, not just for the future, but for the instrumental (and especially the palaeoclimatic) past as well. “

The science is settled?

Mr. Jones does not seem to think so.

I believe a reasonable person can have less confidence than Mr. Jones continuing view about the probable causes of GW in in the 1990s. Data about the past and even the present leaves much uncertainty; there is limit in addressing a complex and unique system to how much understanding can be derived from controlled and isolated experiments in the way that hard sciences like basic physics progress; some of the causal factors in climate change are poorly understood. Others may be unknown or undiscovered. And the political biases of scientists matter because subject estimates of how much is unknown, for example, depend largely on intuition, not hard science, and that tends to be influenced by ideology.

The routine answers are not convincing. “The scientific principles are known.” Some trivial ones are: Co2 is a greenhouse gas. But even if they all were - and this is very doubtful - how simple principle interact with uncertain initial conditions in complex conditions is hard to predict and understand.

No more convincing are the familiar rhetorical tricks to hide the decline in reasons for believing the previous orthodoxy. You can characterize “sceptics are “deniers”; say they do not have arguments, only “talking points”. Much as this may strengthen group solidarity and deter the questioner, these are not devices that should sway anone interested in the substance of the debate.

You can keep saying the refereed publications are all in favour of AGW but what about the over 500 that aren’t; populartechnology.net ?)

As for the point that I have no right to an opinion because I am not a climate scientist, public policy (and court cases) are not decided by specialists, but lay people who listen to experts and arrive at their rational assessments of them. That applies to you who think the science is settled no less than me.

A peaceful and pleasant weekend to you all.

Friday Night Blue Collar Brew Review – Three Floyds Alpha King Pale Ale

The more I sipped on this beer the more I liked it and the more I appreciated the guys who rave over these hoppy beers. Thrown into that mix, add the brewers at Three Floyds for making a beer which is tasty and flavorful and doesn’t destroy your tonsils on the way down. At 66 IBUs, this is rated high in bitterness in my head. But when I taste how the hops blend in with the rest of the ingredients in this beer, I must give proper credit to the 3F’s brewmasters. This is a helluva good tasting beer.

Here’s what they say:

A total of 2400 adults nationally were interviewed by telephone. A cross-section of calls was made into each state in the country in order to reflect the adult population nationally.

I will tell you that I have had a problem with their polls, because the adult population nationally is about 12-13% black. However, in the south it is double that, 30% or so, and in the town where I live, it’s actually very close to 50%.

If 30% of the population of many southern states is black, but calls into those states are polling only 12-13% in that state, then the poll numbers are not truly representative of “the south”.

Officer Solimini informed me that before the booking process was completed Ms. Bishop was released from custody without being charged.

I (Chief Frazier) spoke with the retired Deputy Chief who was then a Lieutenant and was responsible for booking Ms. Bishop. He said he had started the process when he received a phone call he believes was from then Police Chief John Polio or possibly from a captain on Chief Polio’s behalf. He was instructed to stop the booking process. At some point Ms. Bishop was turned over to her mother and they left the building via a rear exit.

If 30% of the population of many southern states is black, but calls into those states are polling only 12-13% in that state, then the poll numbers are not truly representative of “the south”.

I don’t know. It’s hard to tell from the information they give in their breakdown. This isn’t the first poll where I think the numbers in the “south” are skewed - now, the President could very well be much less popular here than in other areas of the country - but that is a HUGE difference, and I suspect it has to do with the polls not using regional demographics, but just the average nationally.

I agree that it is odd. I wouldn’t believe any poll not conducted by one of the main companies for obvious reasons. Personally I never participate in polls because most of them are actually selling something. In addition my experience in Florida is that most black households use cell phones, not listed landlines and will never be called.

I suspect this poll has one or more sampling biases.

I’ve read some pretty good articles on the land line issue. The essential argument that comes out is that telephone polls (well some hit cells now, but not many) always trend older and whiter, and thus, somewhat more conservative.

Which is obviously because, socio-economically speaking, older white people are more likely to keep the same landline number for years or decades than anyone else.

I agree that it is odd. I wouldn’t believe any poll not conducted by one of the main companies for obvious reasons.

Well I’m not sure how much I trust any polling company, but I do know that Nate Silver over at FiveThirtyEight has said they are a reputable company.
I’d like to see other companies break their Presidential approval ratings down by region. If the south pulls the numbers down so much, it might be a factor folks should be aware of.

You’ll have a right to be if that is the case, but right now I’m going to place my chips on “not likely”

Given that it looks like there’s strong evidence she shot her brother (and in a way that makes an accident hard to fathom) I think we’re just dealing with a good old fashioned sociopath, religion won’t enter into it they’re just crazy pants, like that NASA lady a while back (since Cato brought up Tang) who drove cross country to try and kill her old boyfriends new girlfriend (do I have that right?)

I think you are the first to do so since 2006. :=)

This could be my opportunity to come up with something really cool, maybe, but in truth it is more mundane.

I was a saltwater aquarium buff for 30 years or more. Had a 300 gallon tank at home (sold it last year; sniff) and happened to be googling fish, Tangs to be precise, when a registration to LGF came up.

I had a brain freeze and there was this Naso Tang (not exactly the one in the picture, from Disney) on the screen.

The rest is history, but I do recall some of the dips who used to hang out here back then thought they were being piercingly witty with name calling based on it. I considered it good bait however.

There you go.

People have done this forever? The specific case in question is regarding Gregory Girard:

Kristine Girard told police that while her husband hadn’t threatened her, she was afraid to return home after an argument.

She said her husband had recently told her, “Don’t talk to people, shoot them instead,” and “It’s fine to shoot people in the head because traitors deserve it,” Segal said, reading from a police report.

The following day, an Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agent contacted Manchester police about a tip they had received about grenades inside the condo. That tip came from a friend of Girard’s wife.

Police arrested Girard late Tuesday night after a brief standoff outside the 23 Bridge St. condo where he had been living with his wife and their 16-year-old son.

Inside the condo, police found six grenades, 11 rifles, two handguns, two bayonets, two Kevlar vests, two Kevlar helmets, six pairs of handcuffs, two billy clubs, two expandable batons, two flare guns and 17 military containers full of ammunition, which was still being counted, prosecutor Honor Segal told a judge.

They also discovered a shooting range set up in the attic storage area, which was littered with shell casings. Girard said he fires his .22-caliber rifle inside of that loft area and had installed a steel backstop.

Police found numerous other military-style items, including clothing, backpacks, knives, flashlights, batteries and radios through the home, along with large quantities of dried food stored in bag.

That’s not drama but a real case. His comments on “shooting people in the head” are just the tip of the iceberg and does not reflect a laundry list of insane posts at Patriot’s for America.

No… I don’t remember the Dream Team… (sounds like a TV show)… I don’t think there should be a single professional in any of the games… period. If you make any sort of money from sports, you are not an amateur.

I stopped watching the games when the professionals started popping up on the teams.

IIRC, that breakdown was driven by the East Bloc teams from years ago. Many of their amateurs were full-time players, often on military teams.

At worst it was a blog comment.

I don’t need to chill, and I’m coming back at your ass right now.

My support for Israel is based on the FACT that they have been under genocidal attack since before they became a state.

It’s based on the FACT that Israel is a democracy in a sea of Islamofascists who would and daily threaten to wipe out that state regardless of how many of their Muslim brethren would die in the process.

It’s based on the FACT that while there are virtually no Jews left in the Arab world, Israel’s second-biggest, enfranchised, represented population in the Knesset is Arab.

It’s based on the FACT that Israel, when it had no money and no resources, took in every single Jew kicked out of the Arab world and gave them shelter, succor and a chance at making it, whilst the so-called Palestinian “refugees” eternally vegetating in UN-run camps by law can’t get citizenship in any Arab country - because that would decrease their usefulness as puppets to the genocidal anti-Israel polemicists.

It’s based on the FACT that whilst the “resistance” against Israeli “occupation” has always relied on terror, Israeli defense has always sought to minimize civilian deaths and go for the assholes behind the violence.

It’s based on the FACT that Israel officially condemns its crazies, whilst the PLO valorizes and heroizes its “martyrs” with parades and icons.

It is also based on the FACT that I saw and understood all this as a kid in 1972.

Now go take a shit in the ocean.

We totally got screwed in 1972 when the Olympics was a giant stand-in for the Cold War. We got a little revenge with the 1980 hockey team, especially since that wasn’t a game tainted by scandal.

But 1992 was a thing of beauty. Some fools in the 70s and 80s claimed that Russians were better at hoops because of fundamentals—that same old anti-street ball argument you hear from 5’9” white guys.

That Dream Team was so damn good that when Magic got hurt and missed the last few games, no one really even noticed.

Exactly, the sad joke of cold war olympics was that all the eastern bloc teams had the worst-paid professioal athletes in the world.

But because of the 1972 loss I had to hear as a kid that Russia really produced hoopsters on a par with America. And of course the USSR used that 1972 gold medal as “proof” of their superiority.

Fact is most of those 1972 Russians couldn’t have even made it in the NBA; they were older than our players and much more physical, but nowhere near as skilled.

Yes, I’ve looked at all kinds of sites and information, pro and con AGW, and instead of bluffing that “all the answers are there”, you might want to actually read Phil Jone’s BBC interview, or indeed a mass of information that might contradicts your certitude, if that is possible.

You and freetoken might also want to stop reflexively downdinging
every posting I make on global warming (with the occasional support of Charles). I have made my points on the merits, and not without research and reflection. Try and refute them on the merits if you wish - and you might want to address points I actually make, not the usual strawmen arguments - but if LGF wishes to surmount the charge that disagreement is not welcome, and is instead an echo chamber, an openness to genuine argument on global warming would be a step in the right direction, rather than various forms of repetitive harassment - downdinging, the always offensive characterizing scepticism as “denialism, etc, etc, etc.

I’ll stand by what I’ve said in post 99, and a number of others. I think the weight of further analysis and science from many sources will confirm that humility is appropriate given the data we have and and the current understanding of causal mechanism; that the extent to which GW is caused by human activity is unclear. It is legitimate to see the issue as one of managing risk, and that includes assessing potential benefits as well as harms of global warming, and the negative as well as positive consequences of various policy options - such as embracing fraud-prone cap and trade schemes rather than carbon taxes or investment in alternative energy.

I’ll be taking a break for a while for posting on GW, maybe until there is some change in the climate on receptivity to real engagement on the issue.

388 Absalom, Absalom, Obdicut  Sat, Feb 13, 2010 8:34:30pm

re: #386 nogendavid

Our infrastructure is adapted to current climate. While after the climate changes and stabilized, some places may be better off than before, we’ll have to rebuild pretty much the entire infrastructure of humanity.

That’s going to cost a lot.

A ‘skeptic’ is one who thinks extraordinary claims need extraordinary proof. The claim that CO2 added to atmosphere will force warming is not extraordinary; it’s perfectly ordinary. It’s basic physics.

The claim that more than 98% of climatologists who have published on climate change are wrong, that outsiders have a better grasp of the state and limitations of climatological research than practicing scientists, and that massive climate change might prove somehow beneficial— those are all extraordinary claims.

So, no, you’re not a skeptic.

389 nogendavid  Sat, Feb 13, 2010 10:07:39pm

Yep, I’m taking a break, but on my way out to the foyer, I’ll respond to the
latest reflexive downdinger, the quality and tone of whose response only proves my point about the nature of the debate here.

Building the entire infrastructure depends on the extent of climate change.
We know that GW will be drastic and that it human caused? Don’t think so.

Sceptical means doubtful about a proposed doctrine. Make up your own arbitrary definitions as you see fit.

Everyone agrees CO2 is a greenhouse gas. Anyone who knows even a little climate science knows that the impact of its addition depends on some very complicated science applied to a mass of data, include sensitivity of the climate and feedback effects, both positive and negative, and the impact of possibly overshadowing independent effects.

The 98% of climatologists figure is an invention, as indicated by the link I provided to a list of 500 articles that are sceptical. It might be that a majority of articles to date favor the IPCC “consensus” I haven’t done the analysis, but even if that is so, minority opinion is sometimes right - and there are fresh reasons to question the majority opinion, e.g., the admission of some significant errors in the sourcing of some of the material in UN reports.

Read the Jones interview in the BBC, note that the late 20th century climate change by his own data is similar (though not identical) to a number of earlier patterns, note the uncertainty in the data that Jones acknowledges, note the uncertainty about whether the MWP was as warm or warmer, note Jone’s own general acknowledgment of uncertainties (although he still thinks his story is probably true).

I never said “massive” climate change is beneficial.

For anyone with a tolerance and complexity, there are issues about how one causal factor - one of many greenhouse gases - interacts with other factors, or is overshadowed by them; the extent of global warming, and whether it is a matter of a few degrees or many; the appropriate mix of policies to deal with the various scenarios, including ones in which the dire predictions turn out to be correct

The quality of the latest razzing by the usual automatic downdingers unintentionally proves my point from my perspective - others can judge for themselves - about the nature of the debate at this site on this issue at this time. I accept that sites have the right to maintain their own culture, so I am simply making my observation, right or wrong, about how I see it operating on this particular issue, it is not one that I see as congenial to a good-natured and informative debate in this regard. Charles has made some brilliant contributions to public debate, but on this point I have a fundamental disagreement about the nature of the discussion; as I understand it, his perspective is that expressions of climate scepticsm are presumptively part of a larger skein of unscientific, anti-scientific or theologically based irrationalism. My view is that there are very solid grounds in evidence and rational analysis to be doubtful on a number of counts. Which doesn’t mean we do nothing, but rather than the uncertainty is factored into the public policy analysis.

I continue to wish everyone here the best, regardless of whether the feeling is reciprocal, and I’ll check in from time to time on this issue and see whether the climate has change.

You earn your down-dings.

Besides continually trying to tell someone how to run their own blog, you have demonstrated the inability to discern sound science from junk, and yet you play the victim card when someone tries to help you.

For example, the link you shared about the “500 articles are skeptical…” but you don’t even go ahead and say skeptical of what, exactly? Well, the link you provide says clearly:

“The following papers support skepticism of “man-made” global warming or the environmental or economic effects of. “

Economics is quite a bit different than climatology.

So let’s look at this list of which you are so proud:

First two links are to Energy and Environment, a private publication set up to (among other reasons) publish articles by “skeptics” of AGW whose papers can’t cut the mustard in the real refereed climate journals.

Then look who else is on the front page - oh, it’s Fred Singer, friend of anyone who gives him money to lie for them, as has been shown with his work for the tobacco companies.

What else is on that page - hmm, a paper by an energy and power engineer (not a climatologist) published in a journal for such, which means it wasn’t reviewed by climatologists.

And so on. Several of the links on that page are to quite old entries that are simply outdated.

You have demonstrated that you (1) are unable to either know what climatology is or what climatologists do, and (2) that you link to the same old debunked denier, yes “denier” literature.

You are reminiscent of the classic creationist, who believes if he just links to the same misquoted passage of Darwin for the 1001st time that somehow his ignorance won’t become evident by shear persistence of his will to post.

As I mentioned to you earlier, until you can describe to me with confidence why the Earth and Moon have different average surface temperatures you are not in a position to understand the wheat from the chaff, so to speak, in discussions about climate. You are just another noise maker.

re: #389 nogendavid

If there are “solid grounds in evidence and rational analysis to be doubtful on a number of counts”, then why are you relying on papers of such non-solid quality?
