The Dunning–Kruger effect.

Critical Self-reflection is undervalued.

Everybody seems to really suck sometimes.
I wish that Weiner didn’t post.
And that Palin had.
But I’m a an old fashioned liberal,
And wishing and hoping,
Never accomplished much

I met a lady today wearing a gold cross and and “Israel” t-shirt. I asked if she had been to Israel. She said yes and it was amazing to see what a small group of people could do make the desert while all their neighbors could just make war.

I was actually dumbfounded (pleasantly).

I don’t hear such things anywhere but on-line.

Very Far Western Suburbs of Chicagoland.

Most people here don’t have a clue about the situation.

I had one co-worker absolutely confused when I told her it was illegal to be Christian on some places in the ME. She thought everyone celebrated Christmas, espeically those in the ME because that’s where “Christ was from”.

‘sall good. I was kind of stressing it last night, as the streets were flooding. Turns out we’ve had close to an inch and a half of rain in the last two days, which is odd when the average for the entire month of June is just 0.23.

The ponding basin/ball park across the street from me went from empty to nearly full overnight.

I agree that the whole “Foreskin Man” comic book thing is blatantly anti-semitic. I’d even say that it has distinct racist or racial superiority overtones.

But as of this point, I have yet to see a discussion of infant circumcision that has remotely approached anything that could be considered reasonable.

In a shocking development the world’s top scientists in the fields of genetics, behavior sciences, and psychiatry have announced that people named “Alexzander” are deficient in every way. It is not my intent to offend.

I’m trying to follow up on the evolving story of the fallout from the Christianity Today article on Adam and Eve. CT has now made online an editorial about where their stance is officially.

Basically, evangelicals/fundamentalists can’t deal with genetics. Bottom line.

Among the blather on the internet about this subject, a few truly stupid postings deserve to be pointed out. One of the winners is from the IDiots over at UncommonDescent, who now claims:

Why “Christian evolution” leads to euthanasia

It’s just the old creationist line that if one accepts evolution (in this case rejecting the religious idea that all humans descend from just two people, Adam and Eve), then that will lead to euthanasia.

The IDiots are just recycling old creationist tropes, they’re not even pretending to be non-creationists any more.

I would say that is the result of both cuts in education coupled a general decline in the quality of basic education: reading and developing critical thinking, trying to understand differeng points of view on an issue even if one is not in agreement, and learning the difference between hypothesis, theory, fact, myth and opinion.

If you went back to the 1950s and asked the American public in general whether we should look to scientists for accuracy on scientific fact, you’d have gotten a strong ‘yes’. The long, long anti-intellectual and anti-science campaign of the right wing has weakened the US immeasurably.

83 Sol Berdinowitz  Tue, Jun 7, 2011 4:38:12am

Remember, we have seen a growth in Fundamentalism, and in order to accept a literalist reading of the Bible, you have to reject science, which leads to a mistrust of scientists.

And that will lead to our demise as a leading nation in science and technology.

The Fundamentalists will tell us that rejecting their interpretation of the Holy Scriptures will lead to our demise.

So the conflict is pre-programmed and will be played out against the backdrop of the next major natural/man-made catastrophe (or any combination thereof) that we encounter.

Decades ago, someone wrote of the history of science as having a break-point. Until the early-mid 20th Cent, the workings of science could be easily demonstrated to a fairly schooled teenager. Then science “went on instruments”. It became impossible to believe the scientist without also believing in the complex machinery and thought processes that brought him to his conclusions. Trouble ensued.

I’d disagree with that strongly. I subscribe to a literal reading of the Bible, and yet I don’t at all disavow the excellent work of scientists, even in the field of evolutionary science (which is where most of the conflict originates). It is possible to compromise, but not easy; and it requires you to bend the rules of what constitutes a “literal” interpretation of the Bible.

I’m not sure if the Fundamentalist’s adherence to their “literal” (based on their favorite translation of!) the Bible is without interpretation.

For example, every calculation of the age of the Universe based on bible Chronology has quite a bit of speculation in it. The Chronology just isn’t complete.

Well, a 100% literal reading of 100% of the Bible is, quite frankly, impossible, given there’s direct literal contradictions between certain parts. Two conflicting genealogies of Jesus, conflicting specifics about Peter’s denial of Jesus, and whether Satan or God tempted David to take a census of Israel are some examples.

A Jew or Christian operating under the assumption of common sense will allow for some leeway, of course. Fundamentalists refuse to do this, and end up doing some amusing (yet disturbing) mental contortions.

Jews have the advantage of having the Talmud, Rashi, etc, which offer additional (and admittedly conflicting) information about the Torah. The “Oral Torah” codified in the Talmud is seen as law for most Jews.

Many things from the Oral Torah are used by Christians, though often they don’t know where it came from! For example, the story about Abraham breaking his father’s idols and his explanation to his father, paraphrased here:

[W]hen Abraham was still a young child, he realized that idol worship was nothing but foolishness. To make his point, one day, when Abraham was asked to watch the store, he took a hammer and smashed all the idols - except for the largest. His father came home aghast. “What happened?!” he shouted. “It was amazing, Dad,” replied Abraham. “The idols all got into a fight and the biggest idol won!”

This story is not in the Five Books of Moses; it’s from the Midrash. But many Christians know it as an “Old Testament” story.

That is a factor. Will probably take us getting “sputnik-ed” by China or India in some noticable technological and politically visible way to make scientific endeavor popular enough again to draw truly meaningful funding.

Aside: Was at a party over the weekend and a side discussion was a middle-aged man expounding on how the “liberals” gave up on funding space exploration in order to keep up welfare payments and support to the idle poor in order to guarantee continuing to get their vote. The suburb I used to live in had lots of backyard deer. Good grazing since people watered and cut lawns to promote lots of tender young growth. Nice tasty shrubbery, etc.

My backyard was roughly 20’ x 30’ of flat space and the rest a 10 degree gully slope of rock and scrub. The deer would be in the flat area in the morning along with the local groundhogs to eat the clover that grew there. The bird feeder full of sunflower seeds drew the other local creatures - raccoons, chipmunks, squirrels, turkeys, and a fairly wide variety of other birds.

An actual leftist party would simply make matters worse. There are two possibilities: it would win, and put us on course to be the new Greece, where rioters break things because their leftist government won’t hand out cash it simply doesn’t have.

Or, it would draw off support from the already plenty-far-enough left Left that is now in charge, and throw elections to a Republican party badly in need of a course correction toward the middle before it is allowed back into the cockpit.

This is odd-I have a strange hardware issue. My computer had an AGP video card. But device manager says it’s a PCI card. The BIOS sees a an AGP card. Now I went and bought a better AGP card from Diamond and the drivers will just not load at all. Not so they work anyway. Stuck in p&p mode, yuck.

When I was younger I enjoyed going to buy video cards, sound cards, memory, CPUs and fans, and all that crap. Now I just want a PC to work, and I don’t want to deal with all that marketing crap that they come with…Here, try our free complimentary “fuck your ability to browse freely” GuardtmSecurity and Advertizing Software - it’s pre-installed…we’ll only ask you to register every time you boot, or four or five times a session if you’re one of those people who never turn their computers off. Meh…I keep some platform boot/install disks handy for when that happens. If I can’t get a machine to be functional and working in 30 minutes it’s a paperweight.

I am talking those people who insist on a LITERAL interpretation. As in “the Earth is 6,000 years old” literal. That cannot be reconciled with science or history, or even with objective reality.

173 ReamWorks SKG  Tue, Jun 7, 2011 7:21:21am

Anna Eshoo, my congresswoman, just emailed me an OBSCENE message!

Because of your interest in promoting responsible homeownership and a renewed housing market, I want to share some of my recent legislative work with you. I’m a cosponsor of three pieces of legislation that will support the vital role housing plays in our nascent economic recovery.

o H.R. 1754, the Preserving Access to Mortgage Finance Programs Act, would extend existing conforming loan limits, which range from $417,000 to $729,750, depending on the local median home price. The limits are set to expire at the end of September, and if that occurs, the maximum conforming loan limit will decrease almost $100,000. This would have a damaging impact on the housing market in our Congressional District and our region.

This is an outrage!

1. Why are we raising the amount for a government-backed mortgage when house prices FELL 20% last year?

2. Isn’t “borrowing too much money” what got all those people in trouble in the first place

3. It won’t have a damaging effect on people who were smart enough not to buy homes at inflated prices, and would like prices to reset to realistic norms. (A median house price should be about 2x median salary. At most.)

Frankly, I’d rather see a photo of some dusty old part of her body, than this abomination.

We also labor under the illusion that bookeeping at a corporate level is an exact science, like balancing a checkbook. It is a creative art to make an otherwise insolvent bank or corporation appear to still have positive assets, and works as long as all the other banks and corporations are playing along.

And that was what finally happened, one parter got so overleveraged that they could no longer plausibly conceal their negative assets and the entire edifice started to crumble.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. If you’re a commuter in the NYC metro area and have reason to use PATH or the Port Authority bridges and tolls, expect fare and toll hikes by the end of the year. The bistate agency is in a budget mess, and fare and toll hikes are a way to raise $300 million or more needed.

That’s something I was warning about back in February and April as the reports of cost overruns at Ground Zero were reported to be far higher than anyone anticipated. The WTC PATH hub was supposed to cost $2.2 billion as of a 2005 estimate, but estimates earlier this year but it at $3.2 billion, then $3.4 billion, and now $3.8 billion is looking much more plausible.

The agency claimed it was engaging in stringent cost controls when word leaked about the cost overruns from the $2.2 billion estimate, but it seems that they’re wholly ineffective, and the overruns are pushing the PANY into hiking tolls to cover the problem.

Had the agency been able to keep the budget to $3.2 billion, that would be $600 million (or $400 million if working from $3.4 billion), that the PANY would have and not need to hike tolls and fares.

To sum, the cost overruns are now more than 50% higher than the original estimates - and still rising. That’s a huge problem.

That may become a legal problem for the flaccid Democrat.

Very sad and annoying.

Still, at least Weiner doesn’t want to cut support for the poor and elderly, in order to funnel more money to the wealthy.

Is there actually a leftwing party in power in the USA? ;) In any case, this countries problems are so systemic and many of the causes are so ingrained into the American psyche that they frequently cross party lines. Americans in the end are actually good little soldiers. Complaining is frowned upon. Just watch “Twilight” and do as your told.

I think there should be an ethics investigation. What Weiner seems to have done (at the moment, pending further revelations) I would put as more benign than Ensign, for example, because it’s not apparent (unless I’ve missed something) that he did anything illegal*. But obviously there needs to be some kind of reckoning.

*Not sure if Ensign paying off his mistress and her husband was technically illegal but it does seem to be worse than Weiner’s cover-up attempts.

More questions are emerging about what happened in Jisr al Shugur, and there are now reports that Palestinian mourners in the Yarmouk refugee camp clashed with the PFLP over being manipulated into going to the Golan border to spark conflicts with Israel. Mourners confronted PFLP thugs, and unidentified persons fired on the mourners, leaving another 12 people dead.

It’s long past time for the Palestinians to realize that the PFLP, Syria, and other regimes are no friends to the Palestinians, and maybe this will help spark a true reform among Palestinians (but I doubt it if history has any guide). They’ve been cynically manipulated for far too long, but being used as cannon fodder over the weekend apparently revealed the terror groups (and Assad’s intentions).

Assad continues his brutal crackdown, and reports circulating yesterday about the 120 security killed in Jisr al Shugur by state run media conflicts with other reports from locals and human rights groups. In fact, some locals claim that some of the security forces had defected and refused to crack down against protesters, and so loyalists may have opened fire - or the state-run media is inflating the body count to allow Assad to crack down harshly.

A couple of younger guys were trading stories talking sex in the shop. The conversation wandered onto the topic of whether or not married men get more action. Being studly bachelors, they had no idea, and when the disagreement heated up, they decided to ask the one married guy on the shop floor how much sex he got. He replied, “I have a 5-year-old son, but darned if I can remember how that happened.”

Driving south from Philadelphia towards North Carolina on Thursday and will have a few hours I can spend playing tourist since I do not have to be in/near Charlotte until noon on Friday.

I was thinking of visiting the Petersburg Battlefield Park (NPS) but that looks like something that needs more time than I have to properly visit. Anyone have a suggestion about a location (or two) worthy of a stop that is generally on the I-95/I-85 corridor?

Doesn’t have to be historical mind you.

I plan on heading home via a more westernly route and thus will see the Blue Ridge on that leg. Thinking of visiting Harper’s Ferry possibly on the way home. (I have been to Antietum and Gettysburg previously. And have seen the New River Gorge as well.)

Minnesota House Moves To Ban Same-Sex Marriage

In an echo of Civil Rights Movement protests, crowds of people sang “We Shall Overcome” outside the doors of the Minnesota House on Saturday in response to the passage of a state constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage.

The vote was 70-62, and concluded with one of the bill sponsors, Representative Gottwalt (R-St. Cloud), saying that this issue is one the public should decide. The amendment is now on the ballot for the 2012 elections…

I’ve been out of the loop for over a month now. But damn, it doesn’t take long to remind me of how much the GOP bores me to death with their anti-gay paranoia. The government should have no place in regulating gay marriage. Full stop. End of story. And they can take their religious reasoning for this and shove it up their ass. :)

Thanks for listening. ;)

It would all depend on whose funds were used and whether he used campaign funds (which is the mess that Edwards now faces).

Weiner acted stupidly (that sounds pretty good when using Marko Ramius/Sean Connery’s inflection). Stupid doesn’t mean illegal.

That could change if we learn that those he texted/sexted were underage, or were somehow in violation of House ethics guidelines.

Pelosi calling for an ethics investigation is meant to give political cover to the Democrats running up to the 2012 elections. She figures that by holding the ethics hearings/investigation quickly they can move this off the plate well ahead of the elections.

Weasel wordage. There has never been a pro-gay marriage presidential candidate from any party, and 2008 was no exception.

Which party is gunning to overturn the DADT repeal?

Which party puts antigay measures on state and local ballots to motivate their bigoted constituents to the polls?

Which party appeals to those who believe straights should have more rights than gays?

There is a difference between personal belief and actively campaigning to ban gay marriage. I think you know that. The president is for gay rights, albeit more on the civil union side than of marriage.

Chancellorsville/Spotssylvania/Fredericksburg is a possibility. Though I think that would be better served by having more time to stop and walk around (or potentially bring a bike and use that.)

If you say “I don’t think it makes a difference”, how do you reconcile with that view with the fact that it took Democratic control of the House, the Senate and the Presidency to repeal Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell?

What up with the constant gay questions? I guess most the GOP doesn’t support gay marriage, just like our current president. What else would you like to know?

It’s about attitude, no an agenda. Would you be comfortable with a leadership that was biased?

It not so much about gays as it is about bias.

Of course, not all GOP elected officials are biased. That said, there is a clear pattern of pandering tp groups who are biased for both financial and political game.

I am right of center but in no way would tolerate or support a party that were in any way intolerant.

This has nothing to do with differing pol;itical ideologies or political views. That kind of head butting is good and healthy for a democracy.

Institutionalized intolerance cannot be dignified and made a legitimate topic of exchange.

You want to beat up WUB ons government spending or health care funding? Have at it! Hell, I’ll join that party!

Gay rights however, like any other rights, are not subject to negotiation.

Bexar Democrats’ leader likens foes to insects

Calling his detractors worms, jerks, morons, idiots and liars, Bexar County Democratic Chairman Dan Ramos said Thursday that he’d resign “when hell freezes over” despite demands he quit immediately due to his harsh words about fellow Democrats.

Denying allegations that he has disparaged gay party members and others, Ramos cast himself as an old friend of minorities. But he also compared gay Democrats to insects, called several local elected Democrats “yo-yos,” and found a common denominator among the Texas Stonewall Democratic Caucus, the tea party and the Nazi party.

The Stonewall Democrats are the Texas Democratic Party’s official lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender caucus.

“They all have these weird ideas about how our society can function better,” Ramos said.

Singling out the Stonewall Democrats, Ramos said “they have infiltrated the Bexar County party, much like termites infiltrate your house. They’re trying to destroy what has been around for a long time,” he said.

They must have made a mistake. It says this idiot is a Democratic Chairman.

Looks like Saleh’s lucky to be alive at all - his injuries were far more serious than previously thought with internal brain bleeding; burns over 40% of his body, collapsed lung, and other injuries.

And as bad as his condition is, his loyalists aren’t giving up control.

On Monday, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton called for an “immediate transition” in Yemen. She said the country needs a process that “everyone knows is going to lead to the sort of economic and political reforms that they are seeking.”

A return by Saleh would likely spark new, intensified fighting between his forces and opposition tribesmen determined to topple him. Both sides’ fighters are deployed in the streets of the capital, and a cease-fire brokered by Saudi Arabia only a day earlier was already starting to fray.

Clashes escalated around the country Tuesday, signaling no respite to the violence in the poor Arab nation shaken by months of unrest.

Children killed
Yemen’s Defense Ministry said government troops have killed 30 Islamic militants in the troubled southern province of Abyan. A brief statement said the militants were killed Monday night and Tuesday, but gave no other details.

Military officials and witnesses say warplanes bombed areas in the province known to be under the control of the militants, but it’s not immediately clear whether the airstrikes led to the death of the 30 militants.

The guy being called on to resign by other Democrats?

Seriously, again:

You don’t have to love the Democrats and think that they’re all wonderful to admit the simple, obvious fact that a large majority of GOP politicians are anti-gay. It’s a party plank, literally.

I think it’s that the Gay community doesn’t contribute enough money to the Republicans. GOP is jealous. Really, I’m beginning to think the only way to take the Party back to sanity is to buy it out from under the theocrats.

I think it was also crappy of him to dump Rev. Wright. Talk about someone being maligned by out-of-context quotes! Rev. Wright got a raw deal.

I disagree. Rev Wright marginalized himself with whackodoodle comments about AIDS, Jewish people, and trying to claim an attack on him was an attack on the Black Church.

Lol it’s like, dude you are a minister in one of the whitest denominations in the country, who ya foolin.

He’s not claiming they do.

I, too, think it was crappy of Obama to reach out to Warren. sure, he was trying to build bridges, but that one has trolls under it.

However, since those early days, he’s swung around to strongly pro-gay, and I”m very glad for it.

Oh, i think Warren is a creep, but he’s a pied piper. That’s politics in America, megachurchies have a lot of power. But pretending his discarding of Wright had anything to do with gays, is silly bordering on insulting.

I expected Obama to be cautiously pro-gay, just like the Democratic party, which is neutral-to-enthusiastically-pro-gay, depending on region. And he is!

I look at results: the results of dems in office on average is more gay rights. The results of Republicans in office is less gay rights, and ever worse: vicious bigoted grandstanding and hatred that is probably getting queer kids bashed in high schools in rural towns every day.

The latter is REALLY why I hate the GOP these days. Every stupid thing that comes out of a Bachmann or a Barbour or these megachurchies is fed through the noise machine, fed through talk radio, fed through right wing churches, translating into real hatred against real people. Real suicides, real runaways.

DADT was actually an improvement over the conservative alternative, which was just flat out getting kicked out. Clinton had intended to overturn the antigay ban and ended up with DADT as the best he could get, thanks to social cons.

You might try reviewing your BIOS settings related to video, and specifically, to AGP. Only after owning my desktop for several years did I discover that some of the more advanced BIOS options are accessible only by holding down a SHIFT key while making the menu selection. Sheesh.

Yeah it depends on what one is after. If you want to build a movement like what has been done with gay rights it can’t be done with buying votes, because the numbers won’t add up. Any disenfranchised minority, no matter how well off, can be simply outspent by a majority with an agenda.

I know this will be a hard concept to grasp. However Joseph Pulitzer would be a great example of a journalist who used those techniques to sell newspapers. Especially during his “New York World” period.

I realize that his legacy has been cleaned up by history, and the prizes that bear his name. However, the term Yellow Journalism (presents little or no legitimate well-researched news and instead uses eye-catching headlines to sell more newspapers) is ascribed to him (originally) for a reason.

Did others use the same techniques as well? Sure. However presenting news without doing all the research in order to create eye catching headlines goes back to Joseph Pulitzer and “Yellow Journalism”.
