Mitt #Romney Pushes “They’re Taking God Off Our Money” Conspiracy Theory in Virginia

Wingnuts • Views: 39,745

Today, The Hill reports that at a campaign stop in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Mitt Romney was quoted as saying the following:

Mitt Romney weighed in for the first time on the Democratic platform initially removing the word ‘God,” saying that was something he would never do.

Mitt Romney, stumped.

Romney began a campaign appearance in Virginia Beach, Va. on Saturday by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance before turning to the platform controversy.

‘That pledge says ‘under God,’ and I will not take God out of our platform,’ Romney said to cheers. ‘I will not take God off our coins, and I will not take God out of my heart.’

Is Mitt Romney still spreading a conspiracy theory from 2007, when e-mail rumors were circulating that “In God We Trust” was to be omitted from new U.S. dollar coins? A theory which Snopes found to be false? New U.S. dollar coins were designed with the motto “In God We Trust” omitted.

Interesting to note that to President Theodore Roosevelt, the inclusion of “In God We Trust” on currency was “sacrilegious” in the year 1907, as reflected in this New York Times article:

ROOSEVELT DROPPED ‘IN GOD WE TRUST’; President Says Such a Motto on Coin Is Irreverence, Close to Sacrilege. NO LAW COMMANDS ITS USE He Trusts Congress Will Not Direct Him to Replace the Exalted Phrase That Invited Constant Levity.

WASHINGTON, Nov. 13. — In answer to one of the numerous protests which have been received at the White House against the new gold coin which have been coined without the words “In God We Trust,” President Roosevelt has written a letter, which he to-day made public. The letter follows:

UPDATE at 9/8/12 2:01:29 pm

Mitt’s really reaching now; this dumb conspiracy theory has been circulating on the far right for years. Here’s loony Pamela Geller pushing it in 2007, in her inimitably incoherent style: BOYCOTT GODLESS DOLLAR!!!

Whenever one of these wingnut conspiracy theories pops up, you’re guaranteed to find it somewhere on Geller’s site - she pushes every single one of them.

Thanks. I was able to find the Theodore Roosevelt position while reading the "In God We Trust" section in Wiki. That adds and interesting dynamic to the debate by adding a religious opposition to the inclusion of God in money as being “sacrilegious." While not being religious myself I think logically it stands to reason that it would be sacrilegious. Or "what would Jesus say" about putting God on money? There are the obvious secular arguments against it and neutral positions.

Well it is interesting. The pledge of allegiance only added God in 1954 (wiki just told me), so it really is a new phenomenon. Saw some statistic about the number of time "god" was mentioned in RNC and DNC convention papers. Again, a modern phenomenon.

I don't really know where that comes from, the need to be so literal, but it certainly seems a new idea.

Also, I thought about Hicks comment on Jesus and the cross. Would he really think that is an appropriate symbol for him?
You don't think he would be slightly freaked out by another cross?

Not sure what I am saying there, but nevermind.

As a religious person, having a name for G-d on our money is deeply offensive to me. It seems to directly violate the explicit commandment of Exodus 20:7, and it also smacks of idolatrous practices.

I'll stick my neck out and say that I seriously question the religious faith of anybody who purports to be an adherent of any religion that includes the Hebrew Bible or portions of it in its liturgy, and who supports slapping G-d's name on money (or license plate frames, or bumper stickers, etc.)

It's such a made up nontroversey. Coins have had it since 1856. Not exactly a new item. Of course the courts ruled this is not a violation of the establishment clause long ago. I could care less if it's there or not.

I just never took the establishment clause as a requirement to sterilize every bit of paper or coin the government prints or every wall it happens to reside in. Otherwise one could argue that church polling places also violate the clause. Then you are just making it harder to vote.

Considering some previous efforts at "justice", I would rather they were there as a cautionary tale more than anything else. In a museum I'd be all for it, but I would be extremely careful about that kind of thing. Many laws were, and many still are, nuts.

Last night, my Synagogue did something very unusual; we had an Episcopalian Priest give a guest sermon during our Friday night service.

I was very skeptical; in fact I wasn't sure if I thought it was appropriate for a Christian to speak from the bimah, but after listening to the talk, I was glad I had the opportunity to hear it.

The Reverend Terry Gleeson, rector of the All Saints Episcopal Church in Palo Alto began by saying that there is an increasing number of people who are hostile to the idea of religion. Then he told his own story about how he was an ordained Catholic Priest in Australia, and moved to the Episcopal church where he married a man, his partner Dennis, and adopted a baby while working in a Philadelphia church. He, his partner Dennis, and his baby are all of different races. And when visiting some Churches they are met with hostility, including being shunned from open communion.

But he hasn't lost faith, he's found a home in Northern California, and he's opening minds a little at a time. He described the experience of fatherhood with his daughter and partner and closed with Isaiah 11:6.

Bad idea. Won't stabilize a thing.

Under the gold standard America had no major financial panics other than in 1873, 1884, 1890, 1893, 1907, 1930, 1931, 1932, and 1933. Oh, wait.

We have neither ipad nor mac, and I'm not sure Mrs. Pianoteacher and Mrs. Violinteacher and Mrs. Dancestudioowner have either.

Also, I took the credit card off the tablet when the six year-old charged $6 real dollars in a virtual game with the touch of his widdle finger.

Progress. When I was six I was forced through the laborious process of convincing a neighborhood store owner to put candy on my mom's tab.

[Link: faceintheblue.wordpress.com...]

15) James Buchanan. I’m going to put it out there: I think he’d be picked on. I believe at least half of the presidents after his time would want to be the guy to murder Buchanan. Dead early, and his corpse would be stabbed a few times to makes sure, and only Harriet Lane –his niece– is left to mourn him.

34) Dwight D. Eisenhower has a solid military background, and in his prime he should have been a force to be reckoned with. That said, his penchant for negotiation and seeking consensus is going to infuriate Andrew Jackson. When that mad man comes after Ike without anyone to pull them apart it will be a duel worthy of a 14-part 20-second-in-real-time anime epic.

That sounds a lot healthier to me than the way the Vatican insists it has to be done.

One of my cousins has gone from Catholic to Episcopalian, not out of any theological conviction, but because as an Episcopalian, he can be out more easily, and he and his husband could have a nice church wedding.

The Catholics in the family regard this as a hopefully temporary situation--the Church will get its act together, and he'll come home.

National Religious Broadcasters to Propose Solution to New Media Censorship

The National Religious Broadcasters (NRB) plans to release a proposal to new media companies like Facebook, Google and Apple on how to balance their free enterprise rights with the free speech rights of Internet users.

In recent years, new media companies have been accused of censoring faith-based viewpoints and expressions. In 2010, Apple removed from its iTunes App Store the Manhattan Declaration, a statement of Christian conscience drafted in part by the late Chuck Colson, as well as the app of Exodus International, a leading outreach to individuals, families, and churches impacted by LGBT issues.

More recently, Facebook removed from its site a page created by Gov. Mike Huckabee that called for a "Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day" after the chain's president, Dan Cathy, expressed his unabashed support for traditional marriage. The page was taken down for about 12 hours before appearing again. A Facebook representative reportedly said if the company had deleted the page it was because the "content violated our policies not because of public sentiment."

"Clearly, these new media web-based tech companies have, at least in part, contributed to the suppression of free speech," says Craig Parshall, Senior Vice President & General Counsel at the National Religious Broadcasters and Director of the John Milton Project for Religious Free Speech.

Yet when on looks at the unemployment picture coming out of the last recession:

it seems like this election ought to be Mitt's to lose.

We've been in a uniquely long recessionary tale, post WWII.

This recession has been much worse than any other post-WWII recession, and the Europeans seemed determined to turn it into a Depression on their side of the pond, and try to drag the rest of the world down with them.

I've mentioned here a couple of times about Chrome choking on fonts. Don't know why, and it only affected Chrome and not other OSX apps; I'd have to reboot the Mac to fix it.

Yeah, I tried to duplicate that but couldn't. But it's entirely possible that Google's open source fonts might cause memory leaks or other problems.

That's another reason to pay the money and get a Fonts.com account - their fonts are top quality, designed by world class typography gurus.

An alternative is Typekit.com:

[Link: typekit.com...]

Also pro-quality, but they have fewer fonts, and specifically they don't have ITC Kabel or some other ones I'd be interested in.

You are right, the election ought to be Mitt's to lose. However the GOP has veered so far off into the tall grass, they have nearly destroyed their ability to appeal to anyone outside of a very narrow demographic. The GOP should've been cultivating Hispanic voters and building bridges to the Gay community instead of demonizing them.

I wrote a few weeks ago about being surprised at how the local newspaper - what used to be called the San Diego Union Tribune - had changed the past couple of years. I hadn't read it so I was not aware of all the changes.

Now it is owned by a local real estate magnate, and he is a trying to outdo Murdoch:

San Diego newspaper hosting ‘one-stop shop’ for state GOP candidates

In an apparent continuation of its stance of “taking positions,” U-T San Diego, the largest newspaper in San Diego, will be hosting a media training ‘one-stop shop’ for California conservative political candidates this coming Tuesday.

According to San Diego Citybeat, the paper offered to avail itself to the San Diego County branches of both the Republican and Democratic parties for workshops.

[...]

Jess Durfee, chairperson of the San Diego County Democratic Party, told CityBeat his office did receive an overture from U-T San Diego, but declined to take part, citing the newspaper’s increasingly strident defense of Republican politics since being bought by developer Doug Manchester last year, such as an editorial naming President Barack Obama the “worst president of all time”

[...]

Earlier this year, [UT CEO] Lynch offered no apologies for its stance to the New York Times.

“We are doing what a newspaper ought to do, which is to take positions,” Lynch said. “We are very consistent — pro-conservative, pro-business, pro-military — and we are trying to make a newspaper that gets people excited about this city and its future.”

Obama asks Hawaiian-born boy if he has a birth certificate

During a stop for beer and some politicking at a Florida sports bar and grill, Obama came to a table with lots of children.

Told that one blond-haired youngster, Andre Wupperman, was born in Hawaii, Obama grinned.

"Do you have a birth certificate?" Obama asked the boy, drawing laughter from the table. Wupperman turns 7 next week.
....
Obama's campaign lashed out at Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney last month when he said at a Michigan rally: "No one's ever asked to see my birth certificate."

Romney said his comment was meant as humor. The Obama campaign said it showed him enlisting himself with the conspiracy theorists.

Virginia's law was ok'd by the DoJ, because it allows for a whole range of ID's (including university ID, nursing home ID, work badges if there's a picture, and a couple of other things), or there's a really easy system to be able to vote by mail (which obviously verifies your address).

NOM’s Brian Brown: Obama Will Impose Gay Marriage On All Of Us

The National Organization for Marriage has confirmed the bizarre conclusion it alluded to earlier this week when it released a misleadingly edited clip of Michelle Obama’s speech to the Democratic National Convention. In a new fundraising email, NOM’s Brian Brown claimed that President Obama and the Democrats will actually force straight people to enter same-sex marriages:

Obama is running for re-election on a platform to re-define marriage for everyone.

But don’t take my word for it. Obama’s official, national platform has codified homosexual marriage as its policy for all Americans!

You see, Obama’s platform actually calls for the “full repeal of the so-called Defense of Marriage Act” and imposes “one man and one man” marriage on all of us. They even tried to throw God out of the picture entirely. [...]

If Christians, marriage supporters, and people of faith sit on their hands, marriage will be re-defined like an outdated institution and homosexual marriage will become the law of the land.

So will every marriage in the US be annulled the moment Obama is elected or only after he gets sworn in? Is there a form we need to fill out about what we're looking for in a same sex spouse or do we just get assigned one?

Let's be honest, the GOP had to fulfill two diametrically opposed requirements in a nominee: A "true conservative" that didn't scare the ever-loving shit out of anybody with two-functioning brain cells. Once the also-rans had been weeded out, Romney was the only choice left. The party sees this as a failure to pick somebody who pleases the base. The rest of us see it as the reality that the GOP as a party is out of their gourds.

I'm the only one of my three brothers who haven't met him. It's totally weird but my two brothers have met him on two separate occasions.

He was very friendly. It was raining and he was telling people to get under the tent he was under to get out of the rain. Then the guy running the show walked up and said "15 minutes and you're good to go". Theisman said, "Na, I'll stick around a bit longer".

We all did. But I think one thing nobody thought about in the early days of the campaigning was that Romney was the only guy with a real game on the ground. Everybody else in the race was set up for the short game, packing money into the early races in the hopes that they could get a commanding lead and shut the competition down. Romney had his game set up for the long haul and it showed in places like Virginia, where Santorum and Gingrich couldn't even get on the ticket.

If the GOP had nominated someone to please the RWNJ base, President Obama could have been caught in bed with a dead girl or a live boy (which would never happen, I know) and still win in a landslide in November.

The GOP "base" is fucking Looney Tunes and their enablers (people such as D_F) aren't doing themselves (or the rest of us) any favors.

Maybe Scarborough is fantasizing that Santorum would have been more popular than Romney, or that Christie might have run.

I think he's smarter than that. Joe is just lamenting the fact that his party sucks now and that in order to sell themselves to the public they have to be inauthentic. Romney was chosen to be the face of that suck because he's inauthenticity personified. The only conservative values Romney actually embodies are abject selfism and consequence free greed. Scarborough isn't a social con and so for him conservatism is a brand more than an actual ideology, it's an abstract Reagan shaped blob discussed in nebulous terms that otherwise have no real concrete meaning.

NOM’s Brian Brown: Obama Will Impose Gay Marriage On All Of Us

So will every marriage in the US be annulled the moment Obama is elected or only after he gets sworn in? Is there a form we need to fill out about what we're looking for in a same sex spouse or do we just get assigned one?

So if Obama is personally accountable for, and assumed to support every single word of the D platform, why do Romney spokespeople insist it's unfair to hold him personally accountable or assume he supports all of the R platform?

Oddly enough, I actually think that had Perry not screwed up so badly in the beginning, he might have gone farther. I'm convinced that a large part of Romney's problem is that he has virtually no charisma. He's not personable in any fashion outside his own social circle and it shows every time he's in public amongst the unwashed masses. A far more charismatic candidate, even if his policies were as vague and bland as Romney's, might actually have a chance to win.

If Obama wins the GOP's back will be broken, even (especially) if they control both sides of congress. The conventional wisdom in the party will be that they didn't nominate someone conservative enough so the new game will be who can make the biggest, most treasonous ass of himself. They'll hold the debt ceiling hostage a couple more times, and S&P will bring the axe handle down on their heads, leaving them as stunned fish quivering in their death throws.

In 2016 they'll be facing a seasoned set of female Dems. If Hillary wants the nomination is probably hers, with DWS, Gilibrand, and Duckworth as potential VP choices. At that point the confluence of demographics and the issues will just roll over and smother the GOP like an avalanche.

No matter what it's going to be a close election, just because Obama is black and hasn't been able to put Humpty Dumpty back together again in four years. However if he wins we may be witnessing the end of the GOP as a viable national party.

The shop where I buy my glass does church glass restorations; there are a couple here that do that. I don't have sufficient workspace for those projects, they are usually HUGE pieces. I do, however, have projects in which old pieces of glass, broken plates, or even whole small plates, can be used, and I have in my possession several small plates, rescued over time from "junk" shops.

It's actually a very easy question to answer;

Best President overall as a knife-fighter: Andrew Jackson. Brutal, aggressive, and possessed of a strong killer instinct, Andrew Jackson was just plain deadly. Very few would want to face him in a knife fight, as he had speed and strength and had a good knife with him where ever he went.

2nd Best and best of all 20th Century Presidents as a bladesman: Teddy Roosevelt. A better natured fellow than Jackson, but still strong, smart, utterly resolute, and very skilled with a blade. TR had dealt with knifemen when he was a rancher, and later as head of the NYPD. Another guy you seriously would not want to mess with at close quarters.

I did argue the point with my dad, but he remains steadfast in his conclusion.

I admire that you did that, but this is a classic example of why Congress is such a cesspool.

I don't see you offering specifics. Weak.

I think she's awesome.

Oh, and remember when she beat the "Mittens likes to fire people" bullshit? No different than the Repubs taking the "you didn't build that" bullshit out of context. You're a hack.

Yep, Anderson fact checking his own incorrect inferences. The changes Mitt's people were voting down were offered by Ron Paul's people and had nothing to do with the party's stance on abortion, which Schultz was referring to. The preceding portion of the paragraph that Cooper leaves out: "There is no doubt about who is in charge, of course." Anderson is a total hack. Try again.

I id manage to make my point, though. My father had me handle his donations online. Walsh's site allows you to post a comment when you donate. The one I posted ended with "but your treatment of Tammy Duckworth was appalling. Be a better man."

re: #313 Dark_Falcon

It's actually a very easy question to answer;

Like most moderns you're forgetting Tippecanoe and Tyler. Harrison was at knife fighting distance at least twice and survived. Both fought in the Northwest Territories when that was serious wilderness.

re: #317 Dark_Falcon

We'll see. First she needs to win an elected office and then prove herself in it. We'll see if she does that.

She's already proven she's better than Walsh... ;)

Well, those two both ended up in the "Chorus of Mediocre Presidents", so it is easy to forget them. :D

And even allowing one of them the number 2 spot, it's impossible not to place Jackson at number 1.

Oh hell I wanted Perry to run. He was the epitome of AMERICAFUCKYEAHISTAN.

I wanted Perry to run because it would get him the hell out of Texas for a while. Heh.

As is, what they have now is a scenario where people are willing to cut Obama some slack just because he's running against a guy who personifies everything American's hate about Wall Street right now.

YES. THIS.

Mitt Romney is the living embodiment of the smarmy asshole CEO that fired you, outsourced your job, then got a cushy bonus for his efforts.

Just sync your iPad to the kid's Mac, and Bob's your uncle.

I am wearing my ESL teacher hat now. "Bob's your uncle" is a great idiom, but it's more common in Britain. No one seems to know where it came from, though.

Think I'll give it to my students this week and see if they can figure out the meaning from context.

Re: the conspiracy... I'm not seeing the problem. As a religious person I didn't want it on there, and as an atheist now I want it on there even less. Frankly I'm operating on the new principle of, "If the religious right is against (x), I'm probably in favor of (x)". They're a weathervane to tell me which side is wrong. :P

What is "He who has the gold makes the rules" translated into Latin? That would be a pretty spiffy motto for the coinage of the planned Republireich.

Voter ID laws.. I can see both sides on this. There must be a solution that protects the integrity of voting..
I was living in Indiana when the Voter ID was upheld. But Indiana made damn sure if you didn't have an ID you could get one and if you are poor It's free. I like solutions based ideas that benefit all of us.

You can "see both sides of this"? Do you really think the (R) side is genuinely interested in a solution that "protects the integrity of voting"?

Sorry it's a disgrace that US money has any reference to god. Besides the fact that it's stupid to think there is a god it's not appropriate for a secular society like the US.

As usual, the Dems have not a single ball amongst themselves.
