Anyone who reads LGF knows that I think Rand Paul is a complete crackpot, but today he outdid himself, saying he thought vaccines should be voluntary because parents “own” children, not the state.

Parents “own” children? What sort of libertarian believes human beings are property?

And what the hell is with the shushing gesture? Good grief.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) doubled down on his position that most vaccines should be voluntary, suggesting Monday that mandated immunization is an example of government overreach.

“The state doesn’t own your children,” Paul said in an interview with CNBC’s “Closing Bell.” “Parents own the children, and it is an issue of freedom and public health.”

In a heated interview with CNBC host Kelly Evans, Paul expressed support for vaccination but bristled at the idea that it should be mandatory.

“I guess being for freedom would be really unusual,” he said sarcastically at the start of the exchange.

Paul also acknowledged hearing about cases in which healthy kids were left with “profound mental disorders” after being vaccinated.

I’m a bit astonished at the idea that parents “own” children. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not like I’m trying to foster my kids’ independence - they’re not old enough, for one thing. But they’re not our property, to do with whatever we please. I’m pretty sure I could easily get arrested if I, say, pulled an Adrian Peterson on my son whenever he was being contrary.

In my opinion, most of them. They are, it seems to me, congenitally unable to recognize any relationship other than property.

It’s why I distrust them so. Property divides actions towards things into into the categories of wise and foolish. I can use a sledgehammer on my car but it would be foolish.

A child is not property so actions directed towards them are divided into the categories of good and evil. Using a sledgehammer on a child is evil.

Which is why libertarians prefer the only relationship to be property. They can get away with a lot of shit then.

I’m old enough that people still got vaccinated against small pox when I was growing up. But my brother had an allergy to something in the vaccine, so our pediatrician wouldn’t let either of us get vaccinated until he grew old enough to tolerate the vaccine.

We finally were able to get vaccinated when we were 12 or 13. Boy, were we sick. We were both bedridden for about 10 days. I’ll never forget how sick I felt from that vaccine.

This is not really a profound comment, but I took 2 things away from that experience: First, as I told my mom at the time, if I felt this bad from a vaccine, can you imagine what the actual disease is like? And second, what if some traveler had come from a country that had more instances of smallpox? We could have started a catastrophe - there is no other word - among all those too young or incapacitated to be vaccinated. It was smallpox for God’s sake.

A to-boxers are just selfish.

By the way, I missed reading the commemts from everyone here. I took a hiatus from political sites after the Nov 2014 elections because I was pretty discouraged that so many people could support the likes of the Gov of Kansas, or Senator Hog Castrator.

But then I read that even though so many Republicans got elected, more votes were actually cast for Democrats. That gave me some hope back. So I crawled out of my hole again.

They used to use a little tiny fork and jab a couple times to get a good take. I used to work for a guy who was in the field during the eradication effort. They would go in wherever a case of smallpox had been reported and vaccinate the whole village. To prove the vaccine wasn’t bad for you, he’d have to do it to himself, every time. He’s the one guy I know who would ABSOLUTELY survive a smallpox epidemic.

I didn’t hear a peep of right wing criticism when Bryan Fischer said Sal Giunta saving his fellow soldiers “feminized” the CMOH like I did when Moore called snipers cowards which as fucked up as it sounds is actually something you do hear uttered by grunts- you love the sniper when he’s your own, hate him when he’s the enemy. Not a defense of Moore’s phrasing or how I feel about snipers but the right jumped on Moore and didn’t have a comment and you’re absolutely right, there’s thousands of guys like Kyle out there who gave their lives or got wounded for their comrades and the right wingers who fawn over Kyle want to cut their benefits or make it harder for them to return to society.

I had the measles, and rubella (German measles)—twice, supposedly. There are other diseases that can emulate that, so who knows?

I had chicken pox but not mumps or measles. Got smallpox just after high school. Then shot after shot in the army. One of the Army shots was new and we were made to sit down for a while to make certain we did not pass out. Don’t remember when I got the polio one but it was when first available. Even had a Rocky Mountain tick shot once. I think I had a bubonic plague shot in the Army. Guess I am one of the antivaxers.

It wasn’t the best first pitch I’ve ever seen heh by a president but his technique was fine and honestly even if he threw it wrong so what, basketball is President Obama’s game like baseball was Bush’s game. I just remember him getting a hard time for wearing his White Sox jacket to the Nats game. Yeah, that seems about right. My dad measured an inch less where he is, but he got hit by large amounts of blowing snow as well. All told, I spent about 2.5 hours yesterday and today shoveling snow behind his house. He took care of the front walk and all told spent over 45 minutes on it.

I do remember thinking he was a “pox on both houses” type, but considering that this impression was caused by his criticism of Michael Moore - and that I used to like Moore at the time - it’s a point for Nyhan.

I don’t think this one quote can be “blamed” on him, it was a fair interpretation of the quote as it appeared in WaPo. WaPo didn’t give the full context at first, so they’re to blame.

Whenever I catch myself thinking Paul is a serious candidate, something like this happens. The anti-vax movement isn’t just full of shit, it’s also pretty small; it’s not a group of people a smart calculating politician would intentionally pander to. Even Republicans usually trust their own pediatricians and family doctors, the vast majority of whom tell all their patients to get vaccines.

Indeed, Paul’s argument against vaccines isn’t really a medical one at all. He’s not questioning the science so much as the right of the govt. to require people to keep their own kids healthy, and in the process, not infect other people’s kids.

He may just have too much of his dad’s rigid and wacky “libertarian” ideas to ever get far in the primaries.

I keep trying IPAs, and somehow they hit my palate wrong more often than not. It’s not the bitter, it’s the resinous quality.

You’re not wrong and don’t feel like you don’t “get it.” Many American IPAs are like punk rock, meant as an poseur test. Some are really good, but most are overwhelming and stupidly unbalanced.

Bitter or even resinous is not bad per se - though not for everyone - but overdone it literally numbs the tongue. Perhaps try IPAs (or PAs) that use more pleasant hops like Citra or Galaxy. Zombie Dust or A Little Crazy are good examples.

Or better, stick the balanced, complex, perfect Belgian beers.

I don’t agree it was a goof. He said the science was inconclusive about the cause of autism - that’s the entire context of his statement. He wouldn’t have gone on to express unconditional support for the vaccination system if he thought there was something inconclusive about the science behind it.

It was an impromptu response to an unrehearsed question, and it’s a bad mistake to try to read things into it that weren’t there.

The personal decision to not vaccinate you child offloads risk into communities of people who are responsible enough to follow basic public health recommendations. To mitigate this risk, how about a database of locations for where these islands are? Like they do with child molesters.

Indeed, Paul’s argument against vaccines isn’t really a medical one at all. He’s not questioning the science so much as the right of the govt. to require people to keep their own kids healthy, and in the process, not infect other people’s kids.

I support the first two notions, but Mexican beers are not very good (and almost all big beer owned.) They’re better than Bud Light but cynically over-priced. Modelo Negro is the exception, and Modelo is good by macro lager standards.

I would have agreed if not for the context:

Nobody knows exactly why. There are some people who are suspicious that it’s connected to vaccines and triggers, but (pointing to his right) this person included. The science right now is inconclusive, but we have to research it. Part of the reason I think it’s very important to research it is those vaccines are also preventing huge numbers of deaths among children and preventing debilitating illnesses like Polio. And so we can’t afford to junk our vaccine system.

Both before and after the phrase he is talking about vaccines and how the system cannot be junked because of the alleged link between vaccines and autism. He also repeats the word “research” in the context of vaccines. It is clear that at this particular moment he is talking about that alleged link, not about the causes of autism in general being inconclusive. And the words thus imply that there is something inconclusive about this link, whereas it’s not so: there’s no link, period.
Either he wasn’t sure (quite possible, I don’t expect him to be minutely familiar with all topics), or he was trying to be polite and used the politician-speak to “talk them down”, so to say, without outright saying “you’re wrong”.
I agree that it’s malicious to use this offhand remark to somehow prove something about anti-vaxxers being right, and it’s dishonest to claim that this is “pandering to anti-vaxxers”. Other than that, I stand by my conclusion that it was a minor faux pas (of which all of us commit thousands in our lives).

I’ve got to say I’m with Sergey here. It seems clear to me that he was saying specifically that the science was not clear on the question of a connection between vaccines and autism. Otherwise it would have been a non sequitur to adduce the importance of vaccination as a reason for doing more studies. I’m actually pretty surprised that you read it so differently.

Again, it was an off the cuff answer, and he mixed up comments about autism with comments about vaccines, as people will do when they’re speaking impromptu. It’s really clear to me from the context of everything else he said that Obama wasn’t trying to imply there was doubt about a vaccine-autism link; if he meant to say that he wouldn’t have gone on to make the rest of his comments about the vital importance of the US vaccination system.

But whatever. If you don’t see it that way, you don’t see it that way. C’est la vie.

Since it appears Republicans and anti-vaxxers nowadays give more weight to personal antidotes over actual scientific evidence, I’ll participate:

From my own high school and personal friendships, I know personally of 3 college professors , 2 Creative Directors for major apparel designers, 2 software IPO millionaires, a former NASA media liaison and now elite private school President, 2 authors with major publishers, and several small business owners. All of them were vaccinated just like me.

I know of no one including myself that I know that ever suffered from autism due to vaccinations. Therefore, Autism rate: 0

That should clear it up once and for all. Remember, anecdotal evidence wins now. A guy who know this other guy told me so.
