Rand Paul: Parents ‘Own’ Children, Not the State, So Vaccines Should Be Voluntary

Dangerous stupidity

Anyone who reads LGF knows that I think Rand Paul is a complete crackpot, but today he outdid himself, saying he thought vaccines should be voluntary because parents “own” children, not the state.

Parents “own” children? What sort of libertarian believes human beings are property?

And what the hell is with the shushing gesture? Good grief.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) doubled down on his position that most vaccines should be voluntary, suggesting Monday that mandated immunization is an example of government overreach.

“The state doesn’t own your children,” Paul said in an interview with CNBC’s “Closing Bell.” “Parents own the children, and it is an issue of freedom and public health.”

[…]

In a heated interview with CNBC host Kelly Evans, Paul expressed support for vaccination but bristled at the idea that it should be mandatory.

“I guess being for freedom would be really unusual,” he said sarcastically at the start of the exchange.

Paul also acknowledged hearing about cases in which healthy kids were left with “profound mental disorders” after being vaccinated.

Kids are “replaceable”, doncha know. ///

19 thedopefishlives  Feb 2, 2015 4:35:04pm

I’m a bit astonished at the idea that parents “own” children. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not like I’m trying to foster my kids’ independence - they’re not old enough, for one thing. But they’re not our property, to do with whatever we please. I’m pretty sure I could easily get arrested if I, say, pulled an Adrian Peterson on my son whenever he was being contrary.

You have to have Silly Putty for a brain to get your head around the wisdom of the New Cargo Cult, AKA Grifters On Parade, AKA Clown Car To Nowhere. You can still own people. Yes. Especially your children. I thought ownership extended to material. but that does fall right in line with the reasoning. Get these people out of power.

A typical one with an inclination towards racism.

28 Romantic Heretic  Feb 2, 2015 4:38:21pm
What sort of libertarian believes human beings are property?

In my opinion, most of them. They are, it seems to me, congenitally unable to recognize any relationship other than property.

It’s why I distrust them so. Property divides actions towards things into into the categories of wise and foolish. I can use a sledgehammer on my car but it would be foolish.

A child is not property so actions directed towards them are divided into the categories of good and evil. Using a sledgehammer on a child is evil.

Which is why libertarians prefer the only relationship to be property. They can get away with a lot of shit then.

69 thatthatisis  Feb 2, 2015 4:54:56pm

I’m old enough that people still got vaccinated against small pox when I was growing up. But my brother had an allergy to something in the vaccine, so our pediatrician wouldn’t let either of us get vaccinated until he grew old enough to tolerate the vaccine.

We finally were able to get vaccinated when we were 12 or 13. Boy, were we sick. We were both bedridden for about 10 days. I’ll never forget how sick I felt from that vaccine.

This is not really a profound comment, but I took 2 things away from that experience: First, as I told my mom at the time, if I felt this bad from a vaccine, can you imagine what the actual disease is like? And second, what if some traveler had come from a country that had more instances of smallpox? We could have started a catastrophe - there is no other word - among all those too young or incapacitated to be vaccinated. It was smallpox for God’s sake.

A to-boxers are just selfish.

“The strangest episode of Paul’s time at Baylor occurred one afternoon in 1983 (although memories about all of these events are understandably a bit hazy, so the date might be slightly off), when he and a NoZe brother paid a visit to a female student who was one of Paul’s teammates on the Baylor swim team. According to this woman, who requested anonymity because of her current job as a clinical psychologist, “He and Randy came to my house, they knocked on my door, and then they blindfolded me, tied me up, and put me in their car. They took me to their apartment and tried to force me to take bong hits. They’d been smoking pot.” After the woman refused to smoke with them, Paul and his friend put her back in their car and drove to the countryside outside of Waco, where they stopped near a creek. “They told me their god was ‘Aqua Buddha’ and that I needed to bow down and worship him,” the woman recalls. “They blindfolded me and made me bow down to ‘Aqua Buddha’ in the creek. I had to say, ‘I worship you Aqua Buddha, I worship you.’ At Baylor, there were people actively going around trying to save you and we had to go to chapel, so worshiping idols was a big no-no.”

By the way, I missed reading the commemts from everyone here. I took a hiatus from political sites after the Nov 2014 elections because I was pretty discouraged that so many people could support the likes of the Gov of Kansas, or Senator Hog Castrator.

But then I read that even though so many Republicans got elected, more votes were actually cast for Democrats. That gave me some hope back. So I crawled out of my hole again.

I imagine the nation was thrilled when Dr. Salk developed the Polio vaccine. That’s a great story in itself by the way. I read that he refused to patent the vaccine because he wanted the vaccine to benefit all of humanity. Fuck Chuckles Johnson for likening vaccinations to the horrible medical experiments done on African Americans.

They used to use a little tiny fork and jab a couple times to get a good take. I used to work for a guy who was in the field during the eradication effort. They would go in wherever a case of smallpox had been reported and vaccinate the whole village. To prove the vaccine wasn’t bad for you, he’d have to do it to himself, every time. He’s the one guy I know who would ABSOLUTELY survive a smallpox epidemic.

From what I’ve read about it, the movie left out the real, reactionary Kyle and made him seem as though he was “tormented” by his job (that he actively sought, BTW).

People forget that Hollywood is nothing more than a fantasy factory. Which is perfectly all right when it’s not about real people.

I didn’t hear a peep of right wing criticism when Bryan Fischer said Sal Giunta saving his fellow soldiers “feminized” the CMOH like I did when Moore called snipers cowards which as fucked up as it sounds is actually something you do hear uttered by grunts- you love the sniper when he’s your own, hate him when he’s the enemy. Not a defense of Moore’s phrasing or how I feel about snipers but the right jumped on Moore and didn’t have a comment and you’re absolutely right, there’s thousands of guys like Kyle out there who gave their lives or got wounded for their comrades and the right wingers who fawn over Kyle want to cut their benefits or make it harder for them to return to society.

I’ve enjoyed excellent health for the most part of my life, though I was quite ill for over a week once when I was 6 or 7—even hallucinating, in a darkened room—could have been measles, because I remember scratching. A lot of kids in the orphanage were sick.

I had the measles, and rubella (German measles)—twice, supposedly. There are other diseases that can emulate that, so who knows?

I finally realized a few years ago that never having had the mumps, I still needed the second “M” part of MMR, and got one.

Historically, in most cultures, married women had very few rights of their own, being considered, along with the family’s children, the property of the husband; as such, they could not own or inherit property, or represent themselves legally (see for example coverture). In Europe, the United States, and other places in the developed world, beginning in the late 19th century and lasting through the 21st century, marriage has undergone gradual legal changes, aimed at improving the rights of the wife. It wasn’t the best first pitch I’ve ever seen heh by a president but his technique was fine and honestly even if he threw it wrong so what, basketball is President Obama’s game like baseball was Bush’s game. I just remember him getting a hard time for wearing his White Sox jacket to the Nats game. But the commercial was good. I do wonder if it was actually understood though. People are pretty dense these days. 30-60 seconds doesn’t go far!

My son just showed me the Nationwide ad. He said lots of kids were talking about it at school.

I have to give the company some credit. To spend Superbowl money on an ad that serious is actually admirable.

They have that position on many issues. “Oh if that’s big of a problem for you, why don’t you move to a state that has that.” The problem is of course is one can’t uproot their lives overnight. There are undoubtedly some things that work better locally, state wise, and private sector but at the same time there’s a bit that works on a federal level too.

True that it can stand on either attack angle just as well. My reason for noting the angle was that an attempt to oppose an attack using counter-libertarian tactics and posts will fail if the attacker is not arguing as a libertarian but instead is arguing from a ‘government waste’ position.

Nah it’s fine, I know what you were doing. It is an attack on the stimulus rather than the idea of government building roads. It’s easy to miss the road sign for the name of the stimulus bill especially after a long day though.

Yeah Hitler wasn’t an atheist. Not your typical Christian either as you say but definitely someone who believed in God.

Here is a short piece on some bogus anti-Christian quotes ascribed to Hitler:

Surveying Hitler’s remarks on religion in the Table Talk, Jochmann remarks that “Hitler was by no means unreligious.” It is the Genoud-Trevor-Roper text that distorts this picture far beyond that, painting Hitler as a quasi-atheistic anti-Christian. It is clear that Picker and Jochmann have the correct text and Trevor-Roper’s is entirely untrustworthy. Hitler was no more anti-Christian than your run-of-the-mill Protestant bigot. His Christianity was odd, surely, but so is that of many die-hard believers today.

As I said, it’s the fear of seeing Hitler in one. It’s why the anti-gay bigots always go “but the SA had gay members” and it’s true Ernst Rohm and many SA high ups were gay but it also ignores that there were plenty of Christian heterosexuals in the Nazi Party and it’s not a stretch at all for me to say that they were the vast majority of NSDAP members. using the logic of the Scott Livelys and Bryan Fischers of the world, ti should be open season to discriminate against straight Christians because so many Nazis were straight Christians but because we’re not bigoted cowards like those guys who only see the lessons of the Third Reich is to scapegoat gays, we thankfully do not.

Fuck Chuckles Johnson for likening vaccinations to the horrible medical experiments done on African Americans.

The nation most certainly was. There were national TV marathons to raise money in the mid-fifties (and this in pre-satellite days). And a rush to be vaccinated once this was available. I remember lines of hundreds of children, myself included, waiting to be jabbed.

Yeah, that seems about right. My dad measured an inch less where he is, but he got hit by large amounts of blowing snow as well. All told, I spent about 2.5 hours yesterday and today shoveling snow behind his house. He took care of the front walk and all told spent over 45 minutes on it.

This bit is interesting:

Vox drew its implication from an earlier report on the rally by Dartmouth government professor Brendan Nyhan, who first characterized Obama’s remark as “pandering” and juxtaposed it with a statement by then-GOP Presidential hopeful John McCain, stating, “There’s strong evidence that indicates [the rise in autism has] got to do with a preservative in vaccines.”

In light of this:

TAP editor Michael Tomasky said that “[t]he Prospect is hardly averse to criticizing liberal verities” … but “there were a few posts in succession that struck us as either inaccurate or an effort to draw equivalencies where none existed.” Tomasky said that Nyhan had made unfounded allegations for reasons of self-promotion, saying: The Prospect has always opposed a ‘pox on both houses’ posture, and that’s what we came to believe [Nyhan was] doing.

I remember Nyhan as one of Spinsanity authors. He was pretty fair.

I do remember thinking he was a “pox on both houses” type, but considering that this impression was caused by his criticism of Michael Moore - and that I used to like Moore at the time - it’s a point for Nyhan.

I don’t think this one quote can be “blamed” on him, it was a fair interpretation of the quote as it appeared in WaPo. WaPo didn’t give the full context at first, so they’re to blame.

Nyhan’s update:

Update 2/2/15: This post has been widely circulated today after news about Chris Christie and Rand Paul made comments pandering to anti-vaccine sentiment. A video of the appearance that I do not remember having seen at the time this article was written in April 2008 indicates that Obama’s reference to “this person included” was an acknowledgment of an audience member. His language in context also suggests that his statement that “[t]he science right now is inconclusive” is intended to refer to the causes of autism more generally. I still object, however, to describing the science as “inconclusive” in the context of a reference to the vaccines-autism myth. As Sarah Kliff wrote at Vox, Obama “describe[d] the research on vaccines and autism as inconclusive at a point when scientists had found the opposite: that there was no link between the two.”

He is right in that these particular words were a faux pas, regardless of what they referred to (if they referred to those “studies”, the “science” was still not “inconclusive”, it was plainly discredited).

430 palomino  Feb 2, 2015 8:29:49pm

Whenever I catch myself thinking Paul is a serious candidate, something like this happens. The anti-vax movement isn’t just full of shit, it’s also pretty small; it’s not a group of people a smart calculating politician would intentionally pander to. Even Republicans usually trust their own pediatricians and family doctors, the vast majority of whom tell all their patients to get vaccines.

Indeed, Paul’s argument against vaccines isn’t really a medical one at all. He’s not questioning the science so much as the right of the govt. to require people to keep their own kids healthy, and in the process, not infect other people’s kids.

He may just have too much of his dad’s rigid and wacky “libertarian” ideas to ever get far in the primaries.

Okay, so he did good work doing a necessary job that saved American lives. So did a LOT of other soldiers. I’m a little mystified by the level of hero worship for a guy whose job involves killing people from a safe distance, as opposed to the ones who gave their lives for their buddies.

re: #440 jaunte

Good, because I’m getting the impression that people are saying that a criticism of the “science is inconclusive” remark is somehow wrong. It’s not, since the science was conclusive, or, if by “science” he referred to the discredited studies, it was discredited. There is no middle ground there.

It’s only a minor faux pas, because I don’t expect Obama to know everything and he quickly corrected himself. It is a faux pas nevertheless.

but there is something else going on than just “hey, Obama was wrong in 2008.”

Yes, it’s not fair to use this offhand remark to shed light on current events. It’s completely irrelevant today. That’s not what I’m talking about.

You’re not wrong and don’t feel like you don’t “get it.” Many American IPAs are like punk rock, meant as an poseur test. Some are really good, but most are overwhelming and stupidly unbalanced.

Bitter or even resinous is not bad per se - though not for everyone - but overdone it literally numbs the tongue. Perhaps try IPAs (or PAs) that use more pleasant hops like Citra or Galaxy. Zombie Dust or A Little Crazy are good examples.

Years from now, Vox will publish a piece about how Hillary didn’t know the earth is an oblate spheroid.

And even though a billiard ball as out-of-round as the Earth would still be suitable for play—

“The earth isn’t a perfect sphere.”

“That mean’s it’s really flat!!”

The personal decision to not vaccinate you child offloads risk into communities of people who are responsible enough to follow basic public health recommendations. To mitigate this risk, how about a database of locations for where these islands are? Like they do with child molesters.

re: #430 palomino

Indeed, Paul’s argument against vaccines isn’t really a medical one at all. He’s not questioning the science so much as the right of the govt. to require people to keep their own kids healthy, and in the process, not infect other people’s kids.

Shorter-Selfishness rules. All will be well via libertarian magic.

Larry’s Market (which unfortunately doesn’t exist any more) had a Cinco de Mayo sale one year. The signs said: “German cars, French wine, Mexican beer.”

I support the first two notions, but Mexican beers are not very good (and almost all big beer owned.) They’re better than Bud Light but cynically over-priced. Modelo Negro is the exception, and Modelo is good by macro lager standards.

I really like Modelo Negro. My favorite is Superior. I’m hopelessly lowbrow, what can I say? I don’t necessarily think quality is inversely correlated with output.

re: #452 Charles Johnson

I don’t agree it was a goof. He said the science was inconclusive about the cause of autism - that’s the entire context of his statement.

I would have agreed if not for the context:

Nobody knows exactly why. There are some people who are suspicious that it’s connected to vaccines and triggers, but (pointing to his right) this person included. The science right now is inconclusive, but we have to research it. Part of the reason I think it’s very important to research it is those vaccines are also preventing huge numbers of deaths among children and preventing debilitating illnesses like Polio. And so we can’t afford to junk our vaccine system.

Both before and after the phrase he is talking about vaccines and how the system cannot be junked because of the alleged link between vaccines and autism. He also repeats the word “research” in the context of vaccines. It is clear that at this particular moment he is talking about that alleged link, not about the causes of autism in general being inconclusive. And the words thus imply that there is something inconclusive about this link, whereas it’s not so: there’s no link, period.
Either he wasn’t sure (quite possible, I don’t expect him to be minutely familiar with all topics), or he was trying to be polite and used the politician-speak to “talk them down”, so to say, without outright saying “you’re wrong”.
I agree that it’s malicious to use this offhand remark to somehow prove something about anti-vaxxers being right, and it’s dishonest to claim that this is “pandering to anti-vaxxers”. Other than that, I stand by my conclusion that it was a minor faux pas (of which all of us commit thousands in our lives).

I don’t agree it was a goof. He said the science was inconclusive about the cause of autism - that’s the entire context of his statement. He wouldn’t have gone on to express unconditional support for the vaccination system if he thought there was something inconclusive about the science behind it.

It was an impromptu response to an unrehearsed question, and it’s a bad mistake to try to read things into it that weren’t there.

I’ve got to say I’m with Sergey here. It seems clear to me that he was saying specifically that the science was not clear on the question of a connection between vaccines and autism. Otherwise it would have been a non sequitur to adduce the importance of vaccination as a reason for doing more studies. I’m actually pretty surprised that you read it so differently.

Truck Full of Frozen Chicken Collides with Truck Full of Bees, Bursts into Flames

Drivers attempting to go down I-10 West will run into delays thanks to the most terrifying automobile accident in recent history: a truck full of frozen chicken collided with a truck full of godforsaken bees, and everything caught on fire.

The Desert Sun reported that chicken legs, flaming diesel fuel, and “thousands of bees” spilled onto the highway, and traffic near Palm Springs was backed up as emergency responders attempted to get the flaming debris of the chicken truck off the interstate.

This bit is interesting:

In light of this:

And once again I ask, WHY would he have been pandering to anti-vaxxers in the first place? Most of them were in California, which he won by 24 points in 2008, and I hardly think the Jenny McCarthy voting bloc was a big concern to anybody.

Bunch of bullshit.

483 Charles Johnson  Feb 2, 2015 10:55:34pm

Again, it was an off the cuff answer, and he mixed up comments about autism with comments about vaccines, as people will do when they’re speaking impromptu. It’s really clear to me from the context of everything else he said that Obama wasn’t trying to imply there was doubt about a vaccine-autism link; if he meant to say that he wouldn’t have gone on to make the rest of his comments about the vital importance of the US vaccination system.

But whatever. If you don’t see it that way, you don’t see it that way. C’est la vie.

Since it appears Republicans and anti-vaxxers nowadays give more weight to personal antidotes over actual scientific evidence, I’ll participate:

From my own high school and personal friendships, I know personally of 3 college professors , 2 Creative Directors for major apparel designers, 2 software IPO millionaires, a former NASA media liaison and now elite private school President, 2 authors with major publishers, and several small business owners. All of them were vaccinated just like me.

I know of no one including myself that I know that ever suffered from autism due to vaccinations. Therefore, Autism rate: 0

That should clear it up once and for all. Remember, anecdotal evidence wins now. A guy who know this other guy told me so.
