re: #74 Quoth the raven, Covfefe.
How the… How the FUCK do they think this is supposed to come across as a good idea?
This is yet another manifestation of how and why the GOP doesn’t know how insurance works, or why people might miss a payment. It’s malicious, vindictive, and undermines every argument the GOP ever made about Obamacare.
They bitched about Obamacare’s individual mandate penalties, which were designed to encourage people to get covered instead of waiting until they were sick to do so. The reality of the IM penalties was that they weren’t harsh enough (but were slowly moving in that direction under the existing law). The penalties weren’t harsh to start because they wanted to phase in the system and not harm people who might otherwise benefit from coverage instead of going without and hoping that they don’t fall ill.
Trumpcare takes all the worst ideas of health coverage, throws them in a blender, and then adds gutting coverage for Medicaid/Medicare, plus the pre-existing conditions nonsense. Those two aspects affect 85% of insureds - a not insignificant number.
The GOP doesn’t care about any of this except the sweet tax breaks. Well, that’s not exactly true. They get their one and only shot to destroy the Great Society and even New Deal if they can move on Social Security too (and look for them to try).
House of Reps: Lets write the worst healthcare bill in history.
Senate: Hold my beer.
re: #73 lawhawk
Didn’t the House bill include measure to impose severe financial penalties for any lapse in coverage?
So, the Senate wants to kick you off coverage if you miss a payment, for which the House will fine you for having a lapse in coverage…
It’s not a bug, it’s a feature…
That will happen as soon as you’re driven out of office, you narcissistic freak.

Asian carp found in Chicago canal, just 9 miles from Lake Michigan shores
Asian carp are on the move toward Lake Michigan, even as the Trump administration refuses to release an ambitious new plan to block the migration of the fish up the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal and into the Great Lakes.
A single live Asian carp was pulled from the Chicago canal Thursday — above an electric barrier system operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
The fish, more than two feet in length, was captured in a net approximately nine miles from the shores of Lake Michigan.
America is rudderless and also has a nut aboard that’s drilling holes in the hull.

Just because something is short doesn’t mean a goddamned thing. So what Obamacare was 2700 pages long. It was creating a brand new health care system. That requires pages upon pages to define terms, set parameters for a program, etc. It created chapters of law.
How do you repeal such a thing? A single line of text.

Remember, they’ve stated repeatedly, have to do health insurance before they can do “Tax Reform”.
Only by “reducing” healthcare costs from the budget can they justify slashing tax revenue.

I tend to agree with what is said upthread. I don’t think they’re explicitly trying to kill off the underprivileged. It’s simply a side benefit. Their true god is money, and anything that pinches even a penny is a benefit to them, regardless of whom it hurts or how.

Last week’s attack in London was one straight from ISIS’s playbook. https://t.co/uVhge5l5m6 pic.twitter.com/RhPO1hxk8e
— Defense One (@DefenseOne) June 24, 2017
“…There was one crucial difference, of course: The attacker was trying to kill Muslims—as ISIS itself does when it targets Shia mosques—ramming a van into a crowd leaving a London mosque after iftar on Sunday…”
“…Any ISIS operatives monitoring the situation at the mosque in London must have been delighted. The attacker may not have claimed allegiance to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, but he adopted ISIS’s approach and weapons, and in doing so, he helped further the group’s motive of undermining the power of European governments.”
British Parliament Hit by Cyberattack, Affecting Email Access
By STEVEN ERLANGER JUNE 24, 2017 Excerpt:
Last week, there were reports in The Times of London that the passwords of British cabinet ministers, ambassadors and senior police officers were being sold online after Russian hacking groups gained access.
According to The Times, the stolen data revealed the private login details of 1,000 British members of Parliament and parliamentary staff, 7,000 police employees and more than 1,000 Foreign Office officials.
What a revolting development this is. Hope they don’t get spooked into passing some really stupid laws in response to it.

So yeah, while we’re not at war with the white working class we absolutely should be at war with the idea that we need to re-center our politics around them. They’re by and large poorly educated and motivated by cultural revanchism. Democratic Party CANNOT win them over, period, and even if we could it would come at the expense of losing (and more importantly, deserving to lose) the votes within the minority demographics in Obama’s coalition that are actually growing.

Not harsh enough for my tastes.

Just about right—and for you, Frank:
In the days and weeks after the election, self-proclaimed “cooler heads” sifted through the ashes and came away with the conclusion that those of us with brains in our heads hadn’t been listening to the people who swept Trump into office. We were told that elitists who lived on either coast had failed to gauge the mood of the country.
Well, I wear a WalMart wardrobe and I live in land-locked, sweltering Arizona, but I’ve always known that there are way too many pissed-off white people. And they’re pissed off for the wrong reason or no valid reason at all.
And his intro is me—every fucking day:
About all we have is that one moment in the morning between where we wake up and see that the sun is shining and when we remember who is the President of the United States.
By the way, for the Doctor Who fans among us here, if you haven’t yet watched tonight’s episode, brace yourself for shock and awe - and for the love of all things holy to mankind, steer clear of the internet short of LGF until you do! /YouHaveBeenWarned

We are a de facto white supremacist state but they won’t worry about making it a de jure one since this way they can pretend to still let everyone be “free”.

Wow—and apparently she just took everything the furby said at face value:
But he says the evidence in a case he solved-a video of Barack Obama during an early trip to Kenya which raised over $10,000 and an purported early manuscript of “Dreams From My Father” which raised over $7,800-cost Johnson and his team money to obtain, he said.
Yeah—that certainly “solved” things. Arrggh.
And this just made me cringe (not only for the idiocy, but for the terrible writing and lack of proofreading):
We Searcher’s cut is higher than other crowdfunding platforms, Johnson says, to offset mounting costs from things such as fending off online attacks and arguments with payment processing companies, Johnson said.

We need to be honest about the WWC and Sanders just lacks any honesty on that subject. The fact of the matter is we started to lose that demographic not by moving ot the center on economics but because that group was bothered by the fact that the Democratic Party became vocal supporters of civil and economic rights for all Americans regardless of skin color. I really don’t appreciate a man whose state has barely any racial minorities telling us to ignore race. You can’t ignore it. You can’t ignore that Sanders has served in Congress with people who got to their positions by race baiting and others like John Lewis who witnessed first hand racism at its worst.

Lack of empathy. A symptom of both narcissism (not vanilla and group varieties) and sociopathy.
I knew a conservative guy. Very conservative on almost every issue except health care. I forget the exact reason but if I recall something had happened to him. And you know what, you do appreciate the about face but I wish conservatives would empathize more overall. Truth be told, I understand where the anger and disappointment is coming from, particularly when I read about the sociopathic turtle’s shitbaggery. The first thoughts that went through my head were, “Goddammit, Obama, why did you let yourself get beaten by McConnell?? First Garland, then Russia - you let that hyperpartisan, power-at-all-costs evil fucker WIN.”
And while I take your point about his options being limited due to dumbfuck US systemic racism, I find it hard to believe there wasn’t at least a *little* something extra he could have done. Was it well and truly impossible to strategically leak info, fight fire with fire, as it were? And if not, couldn’t he at the very least have bothered to mention Merrick Garland at the Dem convention and call out GOP obstruction? He honestly seemed to think the American public was capable of figuring things out on their own, which was…one of the grossest miscalculations of his entire presidency.
“No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public” is an enduring cliche for damn good reason.

Bernie would have probably been a lot more wise if he had stayed in Brooklyn. Of course, if he had stayed in Brooklyn, he’s probably not elected anywhere. I just want ot know where he gets this idea that we’ve been hostile to the working class. We champion unions, minimum wage increases, affordable health care, have much more opposed to outsourcing, etc than the GOP has but here’s the thing. Many of those voters are social conservatives so they prefer the GOP because they’re anti-gay, anti-choice, anti-gun control, etc. For a guy like my mom’s dad, it didn’t make much difference, he definitely was more of a social conservative than I or my mom are but he also saw the GOP for the greedy bastards they are so he couldn’t bother to vote GOP even if he had qualms about legal abortion, stricter gun laws, etc. He by no means was what I’d call a perfect man on the subject of race but I think unlike so many of the WWC, he didn’t resent the fact that his tax dollars went to people of color as well. I’ll not hold my breath whilst I wait…
Seems to me in the past, there was more caring about helping people when they were down but as said, that was before the idea that LBJ especially championed that all Americans regardless of skin color should be helped if they’re in need. It really seems to me that the new right (post WWII) owes its very existence and success to white resentment. And I guess that makes it hard for me to respect the conservative ideology of the past 50 something years. It’s one thing ot me if you disagree with these programs in principle, I vehemently disagree but when I see people, people who are big government recipient benefits themselves bitching about “moochers” and “welfare queens”, I want to smack people.
If we’re losing the working class like Sanders repeatedly claims, then we should be struggling with working class voters of color. We’re not. And i’d honestly love to see how that group voted in the primary- I know that minority groups in general preferred Clinton but have not seen breakdown among economic status. What the new left doesn’t get is that the same thing the old left did not. And that’s there’s more to struggle than mere economics. LBJ thankfully got that as has every Democratic president since him and I really think would have gone down as a truly great American president had Vietnam been his downfall.

I think Craig T. Nelson summed it up quite succinctly… (/)
re: #297 HappyWarrior
I don’t think people in the past were kinder or more generous. People tend to be kind and generous to people they perceive to be like themselves. This makes sense because there are people out there who will take advantage of others. When we don’t know people as individuals we don’t know who to trust, so we use “in group” status to help us choose who to help.
An example of the good old days that leaps to mind is that financial aid to single mothers generally was restricted to women who were “deserving” (widows, abandoned by their husband, etc.) and the women were subject to checks on morals. For example, it was not unheard of to make unannounced visits to go through closets and bathrooms looking for evidence that there was a man staying over.

Good points. People definitely are more kind and generous to those they actually know. Didn’t know that about the financial aid to single moms in the past.

If we’re losing the working class like Sanders repeatedly claims, then we should be struggling with working class voters of color. We’re not.
Well, some say otherwise: The Democrats’ ‘Working-Class Problem’ - It’s not only with whites. It reaches well into the party’s base.
But introspection among progressives—including those at the White House—failed to see the retreat of hard-pressed working-class voters in the new American majority of minorities, unmarried women, and millennials, most of whom do not have a four-year degree. While the president was calling on these base voters to come to the polls to defend the progress we’d presumably made, these voters, too, were angry about the claims of jobs and about Wall Street’s undimmed influence. They knew these jobs paid dramatically less. They saw the government rescue the big banks but do next to nothing about the home foreclosures and lost wealth in their Hispanic and black communities. That is why about 40 percent of the Rising American Electorate disapproved of how the president was doing his job in both 2010 and 2014. Every segment of this progressive base underperformed on vote and turnout in 2010, and their disengagement in 2014 gave us the lowest off-year turnout in any election since World War II and with it, another Republican wave.

Am I the only one who thinks those Untuckit shirts are as dorky as man buns?
The first time I saw ads for them was in an airline magazine and I thought, “What?”
It’s a gimmick to make money from people who have more money than sense. I’ve always had Untuckit shirts — I take a regular shirt and I don’t tuck it in. Problem solved!
Incidentally, untucking is common in Asia, because of the heat, so that kind of shirt style — long enough to cover the belt and with a straight hem — is very common. I have a few, in fact. The Untuckit people are likely buying these shirts for cheap wholesale and jacking up the price to fleece the unwitting.

My paternal great grandparents in Sweden couldn’t make a go of it on the farm they rented and fell into the category of inhyseshjon (dependent tenant) which is evidently colloquially translated as “parasite” since they are lodgers who can’t pay rent.
Obviously they received charity-they had a cottage to live in-but they lost 3 babies in 4 years so things must have been difficult in the extreme. Eventually they moved a few miles away where in his late 50s my great grandfather got a job quarrying stone. I cannot imagine.
So, even under those circumstances charity was limited and came with a lot of social censure, though I’m sure the whole community was dirt poor and there wasn’t a lot to go around.

No they didn’t. Most of his voters really believed him. You cannot underestimate the ignorance of the American public. The racism too — but they are blind to the truth. They live in an information bubble and reject any stories that contradict their closely held beliefs.

My Swedish forebears came from a similar background. My maternal grandmother was a house servant as a young girl. It was a common practice among farm families to send the girls out to be house servants and any boys not needed on the farm to apprentice or be a farm laborer. Grandma Caroline emigrated at 19.
My maternal grandfather was the youngest of seven. He was the last to emigrate (at 20) to the USA, and was the only child to return to Sweden (twice) to bury their parents. He had been apprenticed at a young age as cabinetmaker and carpenter. His parents were tenant farmers just as you described.
My other grandmother came first to Canada, following her immigrant father (a cobbler) at age 13, then ended up working as a maid in Chicago.

I gather things were pretty grim in the second half of the 19th century. The thing that astounds me is that my grandfather, coming from that background was able to get an education (first at a Free Church seminary and then in Germany, finally emigrating and spending a year studying in Chicago.) He pastored at various churches in Winnepeg and in the US and as far as I know, he never so much as mentioned the old country to his children.

Disagree. They like what they were sold especially the super MAGA parts. They agree with it all. They are happy to see decades of dog whistles and “PC culture” get ramped up overnight to out right proclamations, normalisation and salutations for the worst people and ideals. This deplorable Americanism was celebrated. He gave them the hate they wanted and they voted for that and continue to. Handel in Georgia didn’t hide the piece of shit she is and she gets Red Team support regardless.

Yes, Sweden in the mid- to-late-XIXth century was a social and economic mess. It was overpopulated, in that there was not enough arable land to support everyone and at the time very little industry to provide alternative jobs. While there was not an official system of serfdom, as there was in Tsarist Russia, poor families were reduced to tenancy and could barely rub two pennies together. The state church was especially strict — everyone had to belong to the Swedish Lutheran Church and other forms of Christianity were forbidden. Moving upward in socioeconomic class was nearly impossible.
So, it’s no wonder that Swedes (also Norwegians) started emigrating to the USA and Canada beginning in the 1840s. They were still coming in droves even when my grandparents came over in the 1890s.
ICYMI the book series The Emigrants by Vilhelm Moberg paints a pretty accurate (and grim) picture of Sweden in the 1840s and ’50s, and what drove millions to leave it forever.

Sorry but no, they may claim otherwise but the vast majority of his voters know he’s a racist & misogynistic scumball and voted for him because that’s what they are. That’s what America has always been and, as long as the Others suffer even more than them, they don’t care what it costs to keep it that way.
re: #331 wheat-dogg
I read The Emigrants a couple years ago-the rest of the series is probably less relevant than the first one. As I recall it takes place a couple decades before my grandfather was born (1868), and things must have lightened up a bit by the late 1880s when he became a Free Church minister. He may well found greener pastures religiously as well as economically in North America.
re: #331 wheat-dogg
The introduction of vaccinations in Norway was at least partly to explain the population growth in the 19th century. And it has even less farmland than Norway. It is no wonder so many had to emigrate, otherwise they had not enough food and land.

Yes most knew Trump was a racist, misogynist, and bully and didn’t care. But they also believed him when he claimed he was a brilliant businessman, who know how to negotiate with other countries, and would keep jobs here and bring back jobs that had left.

The Swedes who came over then were economic refugees, like many other immigrants of the XIXth. Now, some of their descendants want to keep out darker-skinned people who are economic refugees, and political refugees, because darker skin.

I believe that most really didn’t care about the business aspects. Long as he hammers the uppity non-whites & “femi-nazis” the rest was irrelevant. It may have played well in coal country but even there his inability to do squat about jobs doesn’t matter so long as they can abuse minorities.

l love Celia. Have read most of her books and miss her column not being in the newspaper. I got to interview her awhile back for an event we were doing down here. She is as nice as she is funny.
Her website has a weekly column—in her story about Jared—heh:
This is what it must be like to be Jared Kushner, who was no doubt smitten by the lovely, lifelike Ivanka Trump many years ago, thinking at least her family would have less drama than his own, what with dad in prison for witness tampering, etc. WRONG! Oh, how Jared must miss those lazy pre-election weekends at Mar-a-lago with the missus. Now, before dinner’s over, he has somehow agreed to promise “Dad” he’ll make sure no child in America ever goes to bed hungry. Kidding. That never gets talked about.

Without our volunteer fire department, the nearest FD would be nearly twenty miles away.)
Overstuffed on potato salad, baked beans, burgers, ahhhhh… . Tomorrow I’ll be at the village hall with the other water operator tearing through the paperwork to finish the emergency paperwork drill the state dumped on us. We also have to start draining our water tower tomorrow afternoon so it can be empty and ready for the iron company to begin work on Monday. (Gee, I wish I could get paid for this stuff… .)
