We went into NYC to see Kings X tonight, and it was a great show. We went to the club I work at afterwards, where I learned that a friend had been killed in a traffic accident in Florida. My friend David Z, who was touring with a band called Adrenaline Mob and who played with Joan Jett and was the bassist for Trans Siberian Orchestra, was killed when the band’s RV was hit by a tractor trailer.

He was one of the nicest people I’ve ever met, a massively talented and wildly funny man. He treated everyone with such kindness. I’ll miss him.

Rest in peace, David.

He and his brother Paulie had a band called ZO2, who were an amazing rock band who used to do shows for kids around the city. Those experiences led to the development of a TV show that ran on IVC called “Z-Rock.” Those guys were so funny, both on and off the show. And they really connected with kids. I think kids could tell that they were kind souls and good people.

They were well known around NYC, and they could easily have become stuck up rock assholes, but they never did. They were kind to everyone they met.

And I feel really bad for the surviving members of Adrenaline Mob. They were the band that Twisted Sister’s drummer AJ Pero was touring with when he passed away on their tour bus two years ago. Those poor guys can’t seem to catch a break. My heart goes out to them.

Even after being in office for 6 months, he still has no grasp of what is important, what was important, or what will be important.

Like I’ve said before, when he was on the TV talk shows 30 years, he was actually quite an entertaining presence - brash, glib, and as you said, with a panache for entertaining the audience. He was a two-bit shyster, to be sure, but he was quite an entertaining one.

Just because someone’s a good entertainer doesn’t even remotely qualify them for the highest elected office in the land. Sean Penn is a very good actor, yet I certainly wouldn’t vote for him. That being said, he has the right to his opinion and to publicly express it. There is one thing he did that I sincerely appreciate him for - he was the executive producer on a 2008 documentary (and the narrator) about the Bakersfield child abuse scandal, a miscarriage of justice whose ramifications still haunt the region. It was called Witch Hunt.

If we had a mechanism to ensure that the market price of a product fully reflected all its associated costs (including disposal and downstream costs), then the market would fix things on its own.

The unregulated Free market in its current form is not the way to go about that. In fact, a large share of the profits generated by our current Free Market are the result of socializing the downstream costs, be they in the form of environmental, health or safety hazards.

There’s quite a few statues of St. Barbara here in Ostrava and the region overall; this was a major mining area, probably the equivalent of the Appalachians back in the day.

They don’t have a concept of the Future as more rational people have. For them, the Future is something humans have no control over — it all depends on God’s will. Taken to its extreme, this means environmentalism and other such preventive measures to forestall disaster are lost on them. If God’s will is to take up all the Chosen into Heaven, then why worry about the condition of the Earth? If the ecology all goes to Hell in a handbasket, why worry, because God will provide. If enabling poor people everywhere to get an education and have a home would help prevent wars and famine, why bother? Because it is God’s will that some people be poor and others not. It’s the Enlightenment vs. medieval thought all over again.

Needing some advice… I am spitting fire right now.

There is a “special” young man, age 20, who lives here in the park with his grandparents. He’s a friendly young man and we’ve pretty much adopted him down at our end of the park. His grandmother told me he’s about 5 years old intellectually. I was having coffee with a friend/neighbor this morning when he came by with his dog and joined us for a visit. During this visit he shared an experience he had last night with another park resident who had him in his fifth wheel watching porn and when the kid got excited asked to see his penis. I knew instantly who the guy was since he used to live a couple of doors down and I know well his penchant for very young men.

We assured the young man that he did nothing wrong and that his response to the porn was entirely normal. I also told him that John is NOT a nice man and that he needs to stay far away from him. We will be talking to his grandparents. I want to call the police and report him but… a) I don’t know if it’s my place to do so and b) the young man is 20 and therefore of legal age but with his disability I would think the laws for sexual predation would consider him a minor. I also want to report him to the park management to get his ass evicted but, again, I don’t know if this is my place.

I am fuming.

Given that the young man is developmentally disabled, if he volunteered this information to you, you need to report it to the police if his grandparents choose for whatever reason not to. A bit of background on the guy… As I said he lived a couple of doors down from me a few years ago. He always had a young man living with him who would go out and find new young men for “Uncle John” to play with. As far as I could tell it was always consensual.

He had a stroke a while back and he is not a healthy man. If the boy stays away from him, he should be safe, i.e. Uncle John isn’t going to violently snatch him up. Not the way he works and he wouldn’t be capable of that anyway.

From time to time a neighborhood takes care of what the Police can’t because, well there is a reason we call them responders not preventors. It’s awareness, conversations, maybe some meetings. Of course all this is limited by our civil rules, but good clever people find a way. Like finding who the problem is and if they are wanted else where by the law.

We had this where I live when a 20 year old German guy sent here solo by wealthy parents for film school went really sour. The LA meth/heroin thing got him and ate him up. For weeks we were discouraging his visitors who would hop the gate to get in. It went from dealers to buyers as this guy fell all the way in. I was really concerned about potential violence. In the end after complaints triggered investigations this kid got raided by SWAT and hauled off. No one injured. In part imo because we got a little lucky, but luck that was backed up by caution and awareness by others that cared to act sensibly.

These people don’t hear about God, they hear from the preacher who speaks for God. So a lot gets lost in the, ah, translation.

Too many people just fall in line and go with the flow. I imagine that is even easier to do in some of the huge arena-like Evangelical establishments. All those people, the music, the fiery sermon and it gets them all into one big group think.

The funny thing is, I can’t stand the megachurch atmosphere for exactly that reason. It’s cold and impersonal and basically the opposite of what I think the church experience should be like. I attended the local megachurch for a while because my in-laws went there and I was being a dutiful son-in-law; it was not my cup of tea.

That’s Lakewood Church in Houston, formerly a sports arena called The Summit. I’m still pissed about that transition; it was a great music venue. I went to a lot of concerts there.
Now it’s a machine for the Osteen family to shear at least 10% of their flock’s income.

Funny enough, I saw The Band open for Crosby, Stills and Nash at The Summit years ago. Great concert.

On a happier note, I just ordered a slide scanner off Amazon using the LGF affiliate link - next day delivery. I’ve been putting off scanning my slides for years, and now you can get a decent standalone scanner for about $75. Saves to an SD card, from which you can move the files to your PC or Mac.

It will do negatives, as well.

I just want to point out that the digital images it creates are very small in digital information. It may be you are interested in Facebook size images, and that might work.

I know. Mostly I want to archive the images for later reference. For commercial work, I know I need a proper hi-res scanner, but my budget is tight now being between jobs,

Because if he has a record, he may not be allowed to live near a school. I would be in jail if something like this happened to my kid, I swear to God. Most assholes who do this shit go for a LONG time before they’re caught the first time, they leave a long and broken trail of victims. This guy knows this young man is intellectually challenged and did it anyway. I would make his life miserable. But that’s just me and your mileage may vary. If you haven’t told the victim’s grandparents, do so, ASAP.

Blue eyes on a dog creep me out. I can’t remember whether that came before or after I was bitten by a blue-eyed dog. Still undecided about blue-eyed horses. Only been bitten by a brown-eyed Shetland Pony. Blue eyed cats are way OK.

Bro. Consolmagno is, according to my ex-boyfriend (a confirmed astronomy nut*), a very cool guy, knows his stuff on astronomy, and loves what he does. The ex went to a series of lectures Bro. Consolmagno gave a few years ago (they were practice for a summer program) and was very impressed.

* A couple of years ago, when he was making plans to go to the eclipse, he was going to drive pretty much straight north from Phoenix and, well, that put him in the middle of the eclipse somewhere in Idaho, next to a freeway and a KOA. He was going to camp in the KOA. I was all…why would you do that? Drive a bit further, it’s still within the umbra of the eclipse, and stay in a hotel. You can afford it. I don’t know what he’s doing now, since he’s working on a contract and he may not be able to get the time off.

I worked at a day camp one summer, and one of the campers had eyes that were EACH half blue and half brown, divided on the diagonal. She would stare you in the eyes ‘til you got your fill, the first time.

Heavy stress on the first syllable, very light on the second (like “Congress,” where the second syllable is so unstressed that it sounds like “griss”). The “i” vowel sounds like the “ee” in teen, but it’s as quick as the second syllable of “Congress.”
