We went into NYC to see Kings X tonight, and it was a great show. We went to the club I work at afterwards, where I learned that a friend had been killed in a traffic accident in Florida. My friend David Z, who was touring with a band called Adrenaline Mob and who played with Joan Jett and was the bassist for Trans Siberian Orchestra, was killed when the band’s RV was hit by a tractor trailer.

He was one of the nicest people I’ve ever met, a massively talented and wildly funny man. He treated everyone with such kindness. I’ll miss him.

Rest in peace, David.

He and his brother Paulie had a band called ZO2, who were an amazing rock band who used to do shows for kids around the city. Those experiences led to the development of a TV show that ran on IVC called “Z-Rock.” Those guys were so funny, both on and off the show. And they really connected with kids. I think kids could tell that they were kind souls and good people.

They were well known around NYC, and they could easily have become stuck up rock assholes, but they never did. They were kind to everyone they met.

And I feel really bad for the surviving members of Adrenaline Mob. They were the band that Twisted Sister’s drummer AJ Pero was touring with when he passed away on their tour bus two years ago. Those poor guys can’t seem to catch a break. My heart goes out to them.

One of the more striking things about Trump is that he has never shown an inkling of insight into the great problems of humanity.

Or an interest.

Even after being in office for 6 months, he still has no grasp of what is important, what was important, or what will be important.

In his old age he has only demonstrated a dullness of mind. Perhaps when he was younger he had a quick mind and a panache for entertainment, recognizing that branding and entertainment are mutually supporting concepts. But now all that is left are the debris of narcissism.

That we can still operate as a nation is a tribute to both the foresight of previous generations of leadership, and to our immense material wealth.

Like I’ve said before, when he was on the TV talk shows 30 years, he was actually quite an entertaining presence - brash, glib, and as you said, with a panache for entertaining the audience. He was a two-bit shyster, to be sure, but he was quite an entertaining one.

Just because someone’s a good entertainer doesn’t even remotely qualify them for the highest elected office in the land. Sean Penn is a very good actor, yet I certainly wouldn’t vote for him. That being said, he has the right to his opinion and to publicly express it. There is one thing he did that I sincerely appreciate him for - he was the executive producer on a 2008 documentary (and the narrator) about the Bakersfield child abuse scandal, a miscarriage of justice whose ramifications still haunt the region. It was called Witch Hunt.

We were aware of his extensive business dealings abroad and how closely those business partners were connected to foreign governments.

Yet he sold voters on the notion that he was a successful independent businessman and not beholden to donors and vested corporate & political interests.

In that sense, he successfully pulled of a total scam.

If we had a mechanism to ensure that the market price of a product fully reflected all its associated costs (including disposal and downstream costs), then the market would fix things on its own.

The unregulated Free market in its current form is not the way to go about that. In fact, a large share of the profits generated by our current Free Market are the result of socializing the downstream costs, be they in the form of environmental, health or safety hazards.

And in doing so, would make it less competitive against other sources…

In other words, our Free market is failing us because its market prices do not reflect actual costs.

ah, yes. Arianism. The argument over whether Christ came into the world solely in his birthday suit, or already had a halo. It wasn’t until the seventeenth century that the Church began warring over non-trivial things, like the millions who died over whether or not the bread and wine truly became flesh and blood (in a spiritual sense), or whether the bread and wine just became flesh and blood in a metaphorical sense. Get ready for a new round of anti-papist agitation from the Veep on down.

“…Within this narrative, whatever pushes toward conflict is not off limits. It does not take into account the bond between capital and profits and arms sales. Quite the opposite, often war itself is assimilated to the heroic conquests of the “Lord of Hosts” of Gideon and David. In this Manichaean vision, belligerence can acquire a theological justification and there are pastors who seek a biblical foundation for it, using the scriptural texts out of context.

Another interesting aspect is the relationship with creation of these religious groups that are composed mainly of whites from the deep American South. There is a sort of “anesthetic” with regard to ecological disasters and problems generated by climate change. They profess “dominionism” and consider ecologists as people who are against the Christian faith. They place their own roots in a literalist understanding of the creation narratives of the book of Genesis that put humanity in a position of “dominion” over creation, while creation remains subject to human will in biblical submission.

In this theological vision, natural disasters, dramatic climate change and the global ecological crisis are not only not perceived as an alarm that should lead them to reconsider their dogmas, but they are seen as the complete opposite: signs that confirm their non-allegorical understanding of the final figures of the Book of Revelation and their apocalyptic hope in a “new heaven and a new earth.”

I read that article the other day. Well-written and thoughtful - nothing I’d disagree with. Yeah, the American religious right is gonna go nuts as it filters down to them…..they already loathe Pope Francis, considering him a “commie” or some such bullshit. When he elected as Pope, there was some grumbling among the RR because he’s from the Jesuit Order (aka, “God’s Marines”).

Nice find. Over the last few years I’ve come to a conclusion that agrees with the author: a significant portion of evangelical fundamentalism doesn’t really care about a large shooting war or climate change because it’s merely the end times as predicted. Plus bonus points if a final war starts in Israel. They’ll just float up to heaven as the world destructs.

I think this is a fundamental construct in the multitude of Steve Kings and Louie Gohmerts. Trump is the wild card they see as their champion, I doubt he thinks much of this only of media spats and making deals.

When I denigrate these evangelical whackos as a death cult I’m not being trite or petty. They really are a death cult not to far apart from ISIS or many of the desperate terrorist groups.

St. Barara hid in a cave to escape her father, who wanted to forbid her from converting to Christianity. For that she became the patron saint of miners, metallurgists, and by association, artillerymen.

There’s quite a few statues of St. Barbara here in Ostrava and the region overall; this was a major mining area, probably the equivalent of the Appalachians back in the day.

They don’t have a concept of the Future as more rational people have. For them, the Future is something humans have no control over — it all depends on God’s will. In fact, I suspect they probably believe trying to control the Future is irreligious or unfaithful, because then they would be doubting God’s will or God’s plan.

Taken to its extreme, this means environmentalism and other such preventive measures to forestall disaster are lost on them. If God’s will is to take up all the Chosen into Heaven, then why worry about the condition of the Earth? If the ecology all goes to Hell in a handbasket, why worry, because God will provide. If enabling poor people everywhere to get an education and have a home would help prevent wars and famine, why bother? Because it is God’s will that some people be poor and others not. See also, predestination.

It’s the Enlightenment vs. medieval thought all over again.

It represents a weird dichotomy: Man has dominion over his world from the concept of war or farming (over other men, his land, women, children) but has no control over god’s dominion, the world as a whole.

Accepting environmentalism as necessary or climate change as being real means we have dominion over what was perceived to be gods dominion. And that freaks them out.

Needing some advice… I am spitting fire right now.

There is a “special” young man, age 20, who lives here in the park with his grandparents. He’s a friendly young man and we’ve pretty much adopted him down at our end of the park. His grandmother told me he’s about 5 years old intellectually. I was having coffee with a friend/neighbor this morning when he came by with his dog and joined us for a visit. During this visit he shared an experience he had last night with another park resident who had him in his fifth wheel watching porn and when the kid got excited asked to see his penis. I knew instantly who the guy was since he used to live a couple of doors down and I know well his penchant for very young men.

We assured the young man that he did nothing wrong and that his response to the porn was entirely normal. I also told him that John is NOT a nice man and that he needs to stay far away from him. We will be talking to his grandparents. I want to call the police and report him but… a) I don’t know if it’s my place to do so and b) the young man is 20 and therefore of legal age but with his disability I would think the laws for sexual predation would consider him a minor. I also want to report him to the park management to get his ass evicted but, again, I don’t know if this is my place.

I am fuming.

Good on ya for telling the grandparents. You could call the police and ask them if there is anything potentially illegal. If not at that point, what to watch for and when to call them back. Get it on record or recorded.

It looks like what you can do depends on your local/state laws:

“…LEGAL ANALYSIS

Laws protecting the mentally retarded individual across the nation are consistently characterized by both medical and legal scholars alike as vague, inconsistent, and inadequate in their protection of vulnerable individuals from sexual abuse. Yet, there are 6 main legal “tests” currently implemented by courts across the nation to assess legal consent to sexual activity; these tests at least provide a common ground for analysis.

The following few paragraphs will discuss current laws on sexual abuse and will define the legal terminology employed by such statues and codes. Finally, medicine’s role in the courtroom will be elucidated with recommendations to the primary care physician on how to play an advocate’s role in the clinical setting.”

As IANAL take my advice accordingly.

Given that the young man is developmentally disabled, if he volunteered this information to you, you need to report it to the police if his grandparents choose for whatever reason not to. You may not be able to do anything with the management until such time as a complaint is filed with the police or justice system. Otherwise the perp may retaliate against the boy and his family, and even you.

A bit of background on the guy… As I said he lived a couple of doors down from me a few years ago. He always had a young man living with him who would go out and find new young men for “Uncle John” to play with. As far as I could tell it was always consensual.

He had a stroke a while back and he is not a healthy man. If the boy stays away from him, he should be safe, i.e. Uncle John isn’t going to violently snatch him up. Not the way he works and he wouldn’t be capable of that anyway.

From time to time a neighborhood takes care of what the Police can’t because, well there is a reason we call them responders not preventors. It’s awareness, conversations, maybe some meetings. Of course all this is limited by our civil rules, but good clever people find a way. Like finding who the problem is and if they are wanted else where by the law.

We had this where I live when a 20 year old German guy sent here solo by wealthy parents for film school went really sour. The LA meth/heroin thing got him and ate him up. For weeks we were discouraging his visitors who would hop the gate to get in. It went from dealers to buyers as this guy fell all the way in. I was really concerned about potential violence. In the end after complaints triggered investigations this kid got raided by SWAT and hauled off. No one injured. In part imo because we got a little lucky, but luck that was backed up by caution and awareness by others that cared to act sensibly.

The funny thing is, I can’t stand the megachurch atmosphere for exactly that reason. It’s cold and impersonal and basically the opposite of what I think the church experience should be like. Strength in numbers - it works even on a smaller scale. If you’ve ever attended a Sufi dhikr, you’d feel it.

I just spent about a half hour looking for an email or dm from CL (did not find it) in which she told me she sees the ‘face the Kaaba’ expectation as enabling all Muslims, all over the world, to face each other. Powerful.

My mama bear self says make up flyers and pass them out to everyone in the park and maybe even beyond that. Is there a school near you? Because if he has a record, he may not be allowed to live near a school. I would be in jail if something like this happened to my kid, I swear to God. Most assholes who do this shit go for a LONG time before they’re caught the first time, they leave a long and broken trail of victims. This guy knows this young man is intellectually challenged and did it anyway. I would make his life miserable. But that’s just me and your mileage may vary. If you haven’t told the victim’s grandparents, do so, ASAP.

No horns, so I’m guessing “horse”.

The one on the right is a cat.

“…The white patterns that are theorized to cause blue eyes are the Splashed White Patterns (SW1, SW2, SW3) and Frame (LWO). These patterns like to cause large bald (all white) faces which often include or pass near the eye thus causing the majority of blue eyes.”

Blue eyes on a dog creep me out. I can’t remember whether that came before or after I was bitten by a blue-eyed dog. Still undecided about blue-eyed horses. Only been bitten by a brown-eyed Shetland Pony. Blue eyed cats are way OK.

Bro. Consolmagno is, according to my ex-boyfriend (a confirmed astronomy nut*), a very cool guy, knows his stuff on astronomy, and loves what he does. The ex went to a series of lectures Bro. Consolmagno gave a few years ago (they were practice for a summer program) and was very impressed.

* A couple of years ago, when he was making plans to go to the eclipse, he was going to drive pretty much straight north from Phoenix and, well, that put him in the middle of the eclipse somewhere in Idaho, next to a freeway and a KOA. He was going to camp in the KOA. I was all…why would you do that? Drive a bit further, it’s still within the umbra of the eclipse, and stay in a hotel. You can afford it. I don’t know what he’s doing now, since he’s working on a contract and he may not be able to get the time off.

I worked at a day camp one summer, and one of the campers had eyes that were EACH half blue and half brown, divided on the diagonal. She would stare you in the eyes ‘til you got your fill, the first time.

Poo-teen, but fast.

TL:DR:
Heavy stress on the first syllable, very light on the second (like “Congress,” where the second syllable is so unstressed that it sounds like “griss”). The “i” vowel sounds like the “ee” in teen, but it’s as quick as the second syllable of “Congress.”
