Not a bad answer. After all, many books influence us. Hell even though I’m not religious, I’m sure the Bible has me too but so have other holy texts. I’ve learned some wonderful Jewish and Islamic scriptures from VB and the late CL.

FRANKFORT, Ky. — Dan Johnson, a Republican state lawmaker in Kentucky who defiantly denied allegations that he sexually assaulted a teenage girl in the basement of his home, died in an apparent suicide Wednesday night, the county coroner said. He was 57.
Bullitt County Coroner Dave Billings said Johnson died of a single gunshot wound on Greenwell Ford Road in Mount Washington, Kentucky. Billings said Johnson stopped his car at the end of a bridge in a secluded area, then got out and walked to the front of the car. He said an autopsy is scheduled for Thursday morning.
I used to live in Bullitt County, so I kinda know where this place is. Some of those areas are still very rural, with little traffic, foot or otherwise.

I’m still rather dumbfounded by Doug Jones’ victory in Alabama. I want to temper my “something big is happening in American politics” feeling because on balance this country is heavily populated by ignorant savages. Doug Jones prevailing in Alabama makes it hard to be measured and cynical in these things. In short, I have a li’l hope.

I was just commenting on the sort of spin this is going to see in the media. Every case is different and needs to be discussed on its own merits. I just realized I have visited this church. When I was with my ex, she had gotten into Pentacostalism and dragged me to this church one time. I found it so revolting I refused to go there again, and I’ve put the experience completely out of my mind. So, I’m not sure if Johnson was the preacher that day. Probably he was.
Louisville has several born-again megachurches, and my ex dragged me to those, too, before her fascination with Pentacostalism finally waned. Southeast Christian (or Six Flags Over Jesus, as a friend calls it) is the biggest, but there’s an Assembly of God church whose name I’ve forgotten that’s a close second. Scary places.
If James Holmes - the Aurora theater gunman who shot 70 people, 12 of whom died, including a 6-year-old girl - killed himself, I would say that’s a good thing.

But before that all happened, Kayla Moore felt the need to declare how much she and Roy Moore like Jews. “One of our attorneys is a Jew. We have very close friends that are Jewish, and rabbis, and we also fellowship with them.”
Something about that last sentence didn’t quite pass the smell test. Were the Moores really fellowshipping with rabbis? There was only one way to find out. I decided I would try to call every rabbi in Alabama. Here is what happened.

A few years ago I was there for some Umphrey’s McGee concerts at Belly Up. I woke up early, hooked some of the band crew members up with equipment, and took a couple of runs. I got hungry. It was 10 or 10:30 in the morning. I went to a breakfast joint I knew of and they sat me and a friend of mine down. And who do we see three tables away but Ivanka, Jared, and their three kids. Precisely! Republicans thought they had this election in the bag thanks to Voter ID and KKKobach’s KKKroscheKKK which threw lots of poor and colored people off of the rolls. Now Republicans are going to double down on Voter ID which is a clear violation of the 24th Amendment. And they’ll also ignore the 14th and 15th Amendments by continuing to block Democrats from voting.
It’s time to blow the dust off of Section 2 of the 14th Amendment and punish states denying people the right to vote by stripping Representatives away from them. Nothing would give me more pleasure than to see people like Grothman, Farenthold, Hice and Gohmert removed from the House under the 14th Amendment provisions!

A Texas gun range employee accidentally shot and killed a man while working on a weapon Tuesday, authorities said.
Joshua Cummings, 36 was fatally shot when the employee’s hunting rifle accidentally went off at the Hot Wells Gun Range in Cypress after 9 a.m., the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said.
Deputies arrived at the range and found Cummings with a “traumatic gunshot wound.” Another employee told KPRC-TV that Cummings was shot in the head.
Cummings was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, authorities said.

Pretty sure. The victim had just gotten out of his car and was walking up to the office when he was hit. The sheriff has referred the case to the grand jury, which is SOP in cases like this.
The doofus who shot me in 1982 wasn’t expecting much in the way of consequences, other than being fired (since he worked with me) but the grand jury surprised him (and me) by returning a reckless conduct indictment. He pled guilty and got off with a fine and probation, in addition to the misdemeanor fine he paid for discharging a firearm in the city limits.
A fatality should obviously rate much stiffer penalties but given the crazy atmosphere today, especially in Texas, the shooter may get off with no legal consequence at all. The range’s insurance company will be out millions however.

One small problem with that comparison. Guns have one specific job and that is for killing. Cars are not designed to kill, it is not their primary use. Back over accidents are accidents.They are more preventable now with technology/rear facing cameras, but not everyone has a new car with those options. Cars are also more heavily regulated, licensed and insured. Hence the constantly updated safety features. Guns, not so much these days.

After this win, Republicans are still intent on gutting the government. We have a lot of work to do. I’m optimistic that 2018 and 2020 are going to rock the Republican party to the core, because a majority of Democrats are finally woke. again, if someone gets killed by a car, that’s an accident as cars are not designed to kill people. Handguns are designed for one purpose, namely to kill or injure people, and for that reason, the approach to liability must be a different one.

In general I suppose so, but many factors involved. It’s a little surprising given all the CCW permits issued.Those accident numbers are also tragic at every level above zero, but do not seem to have come up with the rate of permits issued. Perhaps these are 2 subsets of those at least a little (often far more) more careful than the “buy it and forget it in the nightstand” types.
Accidents at the ranges? That would be a popularity/participation of the sport kinda measure. There are fewer ranges in many areas, but those remaining get and stay busy as heck. And It’s a challenge to oversee the public as they shoot. An overlooked point sometimes is those that teach and enforce safety. Those folks deserve some credit.
Setting aside the discussion of what guns are designed for a moment, I’m more fearful of a cell phone in a car drivers hands than a ccw gun in a holster. Especially at 65 mph on the way to the range on a sunny Saturday.

Lots of factors: 1. Fewer gun owners per capita like you said. Also related, far fewer people go hunting combined with the increased popularity of bow hunting. 2. Guns have gotten a lot safer with magazine disconnects and loaded chamber indicators becoming more common. Safe storage laws in many States further reduce the number of kids handling guns unsupervised. 3. Freakonomics: Average intelligence has gone up. No more leaded gas emissions poisoning people’s brains. Legal abortion leads to fewer unwanted kids getting into shit. 4. Law enforcement investigative tools and forensic science has gotten a better leading to fewer murders are being misclassified as accidental. Also the stigma against suicide has diminished and some life insurance policies even pay out on suicide after a certain number of years, so there’s less motive for the “while cleaning his gun” whitewashing narrative.

Rosenstein also made it clear yesterday that he’s not down with any plan to fire Mueller, so any firing would involve a Saturday Night Massacre scenario followed by massive protests, even possibly a general strike.
The real danger here is that Trump probably accurately feels like he’s cornered and ultimately fucked no matter what he does and he’s the kind of guy who tends to lash out.

Earlier this year a friend of mine had a woman, yes a woman, get pissed off at him thinking he cut her off and at a light in his own neighborhood (1/4 mile away from his home) she jumped out and flashed a pistol at him cursing him out. While she was still out of her car, he just gunned it, drove around her through a red light and got the hell out of there.

He then asked me in all seriousness if that was some kind of 2 year vo-tech school. I’ve mentioned the medical student who did not know that other countries have their own military forces, separate and distinct from those of the US . This came up during a discussion of her belief that the Moon landings were faked. She thought all “military” everywhere was part of the same organization and took orders from the same source, like a global corporation. Another example: A Lubbock school principal heard me mention that my daughter had gone to MIT and asked what that stood for. He then asked me in all seriousness if that was some kind of 2 year vo-tech school. I got pissed at him for disparaging my daughter’s school, but he managed to convince me that he was entirely serious. “This is Texas, why would we know about some little college in Massachusetts?” he asked.

My one wingnut friend on Tuesday said that Soros and Pelosi paid off Moore’s accusers. I’ve known the guy for over 25 years and I didn’t want to go off on him but I was just astounded that someone could be that dumb. For me, my biggest problem with conservatives is how smug they are. I know that’s an accusation thrown liberals way a lot too but most liberals I know don’t claim to be the ideological heirs of the Founders.

If I was innocent I wouldn’t have resigned; whether you like it or not, Franken wasn’t innocent, and US Senators expressing their belief he should resign are not a “mob.”
We do not know any of the details of what actually was said to Al by his Senate colleagues and if there was pushing or not. He still may feel innocent but could have seen it as being in a no win situation because too many think like you and trying to fight that was insurmountable.

Exactly but it’s easy to just talk generalities and the rubes fall for it.
Cutting red tape is almost always a winner as talking points go. It sounds like you want to get shit done (which is kind of where the saying comes from). But how you get shit done is (or should be) as important as actually getting it done. And regulations are very much about how shit gets done in this country.
Cheap bacon.
Cheap tomato.
Head of Iceberg lettuce.
Chain store white bread, toasted.
And yet, all together, that BLT is far more than the sum of those parts.
We might not have the parts we want, or the best bits ever, but we can still build something better than we had before we started with what we have. Perhaps not the best or most perfect sandwich, but better than what we started with.
But if I’d thrown out that cheap bacon because it wasn’t good enough even though it wasn’t spoiled? Then no sandwich and we’re worse off than we were before.
A lesson for you while I eat my lunch.

The con game Steve Bannon has pulled on Republicans in the last year-and-a-half goes something like this: Only Bannon and Breitbart have an ear to the ground and a finger on the pulse of the new nationalist movement that’s reshaping conservatism and its own image. The scam centers on the concept that a rising force of nationalists who hate brown people, gay people, and anyone who doesn’t toe the neo-nationalist line is unstoppable, implacable, and at the immediate disposal of Trump and Bannon. The scam puts hatred of the media and “elites” (by which they mean, “people who can read”) before any conservative principle.
We also realized Tuesday night that there is a Newtonian character to Donald Trump’s social-media power. Trump may motivate his part of the Republican base with whatever lunatic batshittery streams from his fingers to his Twitter account, but activating those individuals also brings an equal and opposite reaction from people who don’t breathe through their mouths, don’t read the comments section of Breitbart or /r/The_Donald, or believe that everything wrong in their lives comes from the conspiracy between George Soros and the lizard people.
Yes, Donald Trump gets the base riled up. His rock-bottom approval ratings mean he also activates women, African Americans, Hispanics, and every other demographic group that doesn’t fit into his 1950s (or is it 1850s?) fantasy of what America looks, works, and feels like. Those folks—and for many of you Trump readers, this is a complicated idea, so follow along—comprise what scientists call a majority of voters. And they hate him. They hate him so much they’ll crawl across broken glass to vote against him and any candidate he endorses.
