I kind of hope that he never stops doing that. I hope it gets to the point that people divert their eyes whenever they have to walk past him.
Rude Pundit has the right idea yet again.
Democrats need to understand that the black vote has now saved them in Alabama as it did in Virginia. It’s time to go even further and, to continue the quote above, “that means, in as many cases as it is possible, nominating and running non-white candidates.” African Americans, and especially African American women, are trying to save this country from the stupidity of our inexhaustible white ignorance. It’s time to center the concerns of non-white communities in the Democratic Party and not just ask them to vote, time and again, without those things being addressed.
2. As I’ve also said repeatedly, fuck the white working class. Fuck them. When their needs cross with those of the non-white working class voters you’re courting, then great. And you know what? Most of those needs do cross because they are class-based. They need health care, poverty programs, jobs programs, decent education. Democrats keep wanting to pretend that racist fucknuts can be appealed to based on class. It’s a comforting lie that is proven to be bullshit time and again. Roy Moore got 92% of the white vote, and that motherfucker was a wretched candidate before it was revealed he finger-fucked a 14 year-old. This country doesn’t belong exclusively to white people anymore. The Republicans are fighting a desperate battle to try to maintain that white dominance. They will lose.
So no more fucking speeches about how we “understand” the pain of the white working class. It’s up to the the white working class to fucking get that Democrats are the only ones who give a shit about their pain and economic hardship. And no more fucking articles about dumb fucks who are clinging to Donald Trump. They are dumb fucks. Let them drown in their stupidity for a few minutes before we throw them the life preserver.
re: #6 makeitstop
Rude Pundit has the right idea yet again.
We try to talk and in fact do talk those issues and those voters vote Republican because they’d too ignorant to realize things like repealing ACA, CHIPS, etc hurts them and their families too. Doesn’t help when you’ve got Bernie going around saying the Dems forgot them.
That look on Ted Crocket’s face when he’s told “you don’t have to swear in on a Bible” is priceless.

We don’t ignore working class voters- we haven’t, that’s a lie, but we don’t ignore legitimate concerns of our base voters who stick with the party year after year. That includes PoC especially women.
re: #6 makeitstop
Rude Pundit has the right idea yet again.
Rude Pundit’s argument would be better if his numbers were right. Moore did not get 92% of the White vote. CNN shows 68%, and that doesn’t factor the GOP non-vote that stayed away/blew up a write-in.

re: #21 dog philosopher ஐஒஔ௸

The night Jesus was arrested, he told his disciples to gather arms. Then Jesus went and prayed, and finally came to terms with what God wanted him to do. When one of his disciples cut the ear off of one of the arresting soldiers, Jesus healed the ear, and told the disciples to put the weapons away.
These nuts skip the last part, and the humanity of Jesus having to deal with his own death. Which once again shows they’re not true Christians, because it was his following through on God’s plan for him that made him Christ.
From the lesson plan “Atheists knowing Christianity.”

On the issue of Texas Congressman Blake Farenthold (R) and his own sexual harassment problems, it appears that he has released the domain blow-me (dot) org, which he registered in 1999.
[Lauren] Greene alleges that Farenthold, a congressman who made headlines earlier this week for being listed as the registrant for the URL blow-me.org in 1999 —only recently releasing it, made a number of attempts to gauge whether she was interested in having sex with him. The complaint filed by Greene alleges that Farenthold told Greene that he was estranged from his wife and had not had sex with her in years. It also said that he suggested that something on her skirt looked like semen.
It would also appear that the operative sent over to Farenthold’s office by Darrel Issa to “clean up his image” is actually working against Farenthold.

So, Susan Sarandon, you must repent and give us all a major mea culpa. And that goes for the rest of your fellow fools. We need a united Party going forward, and your ilk cannot be accepted back into the fold without confession and contrition.

And JQ Adams was far from hostile to religion but rightfully didn’t like mixing politics with it. I think he’s an underrated figure. A real jack of all trades- diplomat, legislator,President, and legislator again. Also a fine abolitionist.

re: #90 Anymouse 🌹
There is a difference between the officer’s oath for commissioning and the enlistment oath (differences highlighted)
Officer’s oath:
I, [name], do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God. (optional)
Enlistment oath:
I, (state name of enlistee), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God. (optional)
The mental reservation clause does not appear in the enlistment oath, because an enlistee can be drafted. The obedience clause in the enlistment oath does not appear in the officer’s oath.

There are plenty of sophisticated RW arguments about Islam and its supposed incompatibility with democratic values, but Moore’s spokesperson could only come up with one completely idiotic argument about Moslems not being able to swear on a Bible and gaped like a deer in the headlights when confronted.

Not sure if anyone has reported it:
FRANKFORT, Ky. — Dan Johnson, a Republican state lawmaker in Kentucky who defiantly denied allegations that he sexually assaulted a teenage girl in the basement of his home, died in an apparent suicide Wednesday night, the county coroner said. He was 57.
Bullitt County Coroner Dave Billings said Johnson died of a single gunshot wound on Greenwell Ford Road in Mount Washington, Kentucky. Billings said Johnson stopped his car at the end of a bridge in a secluded area, then got out and walked to the front of the car. He said an autopsy is scheduled for Thursday morning.
I used to live in Bullitt County, so I kinda know where this place is. Some of those areas are still very rural, with little traffic, foot or otherwise.

Johnson posted on Facebook about suffering from PTSD before he committed suicide. I don’t know much about him, or how he ended up with PTSD, but I can’t gloat over his death. The man clearly had some serious issues, which (it is worth noting) his church and religion did nothing to allay. He may have decided death would be easier on his family than having all his sexual proclivities discussed in public. Or easier on him.
I’m still rather dumbfounded by Doug Jones’ victory in Alabama. I want to temper my “something big is happening in American politics” feeling because on balance this country is heavily populated by ignorant savages. Doug Jones prevailing in Alabama makes it hard to be measured and cynical in these things. In short, I have a li’l hope.

I was just commenting on the sort of spin this is going to see in the media. Every case is different and needs to be discussed on its own merits. That is difficult to impossible in our current climate of discourse, which is all abut tweets, talking points and internet memes, totally devoid of nuance.

I just realized I have visited this church. When I was with my ex, she had gotten into Pentacostalism and dragged me to this church one time. I found it so revolting I refused to go there again, and I’ve put the experience completely out of my mind. So, I’m not sure if Johnson was the preacher that day. Probably he was.
Louisville has several born-again megachurches, and my ex dragged me to those, too, before her fascination with Pentacostalism finally waned. Southeast Christian (or Six Flags Over Jesus, as a friend calls it) is the biggest, but there’s an Assembly of God church whose name I’ve forgotten that’s a close second. Scary places.
If James Holmes - the Aurora theater gunman who shot 70 people, 12 of whom died, including a 6-year-old girl - killed himself, I would say that’s a good thing.

At a campaign rally Monday night, Kayla Moore spoke in support of her husband, Roy, who at the time was running for Alabama senator. Last night, the seat went to opponent Doug Jones, a Democrat, whom Donald Trump congratulated via Twitter for his hard-fought victory. (“It never ends!” Trump tweeted, telling the truth.)
But before that all happened, Kayla Moore felt the need to declare how much she and Roy Moore like Jews. “One of our attorneys is a Jew. We have very close friends that are Jewish, and rabbis, and we also fellowship with them.”
Something about that last sentence didn’t quite pass the smell test. Were the Moores really fellowshipping with rabbis? There was only one way to find out. I decided I would try to call every rabbi in Alabama. Here is what happened.

look, the fact that there was a realistic chance of a fellow like that winning at all was bad enough.
and remember, the GOP had a backup plan: Alabama is going to change its laws to allow the governor to appoint a new senator for two years should the current one(s) be unable to serve.
they would have seated Moore, then run him out on an ethics charge, thus projecting the image that they still have the least shred of of moral decency, let him be replaced by another R, who, in two years, would have been established enough to be re-elected easily even if Moore chose to run again.

we have a system that allows them to stay in power without a majority of votes.
again, recall the George Carlin quote: “Think about how stupid the average person is. Then remember that half of them are stupider than that”.
Now imagine a system that allows the stupid half to control a majority the Senate and the Electoral vote, and has gerrymandered voting districts to give them control of the House of Representatives…

Precisely! Republicans thought they had this election in the bag thanks to Voter ID and KKKobach’s KKKroscheKKK which threw lots of poor and colored people off of the rolls. Now Republicans are going to double down on Voter ID which is a clear violation of the 24th Amendment. And they’ll also ignore the 14th and 15th Amendments by continuing to block Democrats from voting.
It’s time to blow the dust off of Section 2 of the 14th Amendment and punish states denying people the right to vote by stripping Representatives away from them. Nothing would give me more pleasure than to see people like Grothman, Farenthold, Hice and Gohmert removed from the House under the 14th Amendment provisions!

handguns are designed to shoot people. When something like that happens, it is not an accident, that is just them fulfilling their purpose. That should be the basis of a new set of liability laws.
re: #190 sagehen
Are they sure it was an accident?
Pretty sure. The victim had just gotten out of his car and was walking up to the office when he was hit. The sheriff has referred the case to the grand jury, which is SOP in cases like this.
The doofus who shot me in 1982 wasn’t expecting much in the way of consequences, other than being fired (since he worked with me) but the grand jury surprised him (and me) by returning a reckless conduct indictment. He pled guilty and got off with a fine and probation, in addition to the misdemeanor fine he paid for discharging a firearm in the city limits.
A fatality should obviously rate much stiffer penalties but given the crazy atmosphere today, especially in Texas, the shooter may get off with no legal consequence at all. The range’s insurance company will be out millions however.

re: #199 Shropshire Slasher
One small problem with that comparison. Guns have one specific job and that is for killing. Cars are not designed to kill, it is not their primary use. Back over accidents are accidents. They are more preventable now with technology/rear facing cameras, but not everyone has a new car with those options. Cars are also more heavily regulated, licensed and insured. Hence the constantly updated safety features. Guns, not so much these days.

Of course accidents are preventable, with guns more so given their sheer simplicity of operation. One injury is too many. But progress is ongoing. A gun range presents less of a threat to a customer or employee than the drive to and from. But thousands of ranges each with hundreds or of customers, not sure zero is actually achievable.

At least that’s one place they’re trying, and getting results. No, you won’t ever get it to zero, but if you closed all the gun ranges, the places these people would go and shoot would put many more lives in danger. It looks like they do that gun range deaths seriously.

again, if someone gets killed by a car, that’s an accident as cars are not designed to kill people. Handguns are designed for one purpose, namely to kill or injure people, and for that reason, the approach to liability must be a different one.

re: #221 FormerDirtDart
In general I suppose so, but many factors involved. It’s a little surprising given all the CCW permits issued. Those accident numbers are also tragic at every level above zero, but do not seem to have come up with the rate of permits issued. Perhaps these are 2 subsets of those at least a little (often far more) more careful than the “buy it and forget it in the nightstand” types.
Accidents at the ranges? That would be a popularity/participation of the sport kinda measure. There are fewer ranges in many areas, but those remaining get and stay busy as heck. And It’s a challenge to oversee the public as they shoot. An overlooked point sometimes is those that teach and enforce safety. Those folks deserve some credit.
Setting aside the discussion of what guns are designed for a moment, I’m more fearful of a cell phone in a car drivers hands than a ccw gun in a holster. Especially at 65 mph on the way to the range on a sunny Saturday.
re: #221 FormerDirtDart
One factor is likely that the percentage of households with a firearm has been trending downward
Trends in Gun Ownership in the United States, 1972-2014
Lots of factors: 1. Fewer gun owners per capita like you said. Also related, far fewer people go hunting combined with the increased popularity of bow hunting. 2. Guns have gotten a lot safer with magazine disconnects and loaded chamber indicators becoming more common. Safe storage laws in many States further reduce the number of kids handling guns unsupervised. 3. Freakonomics: Average intelligence has gone up. No more leaded gas emissions poisoning people’s brains. Legal abortion leads to fewer unwanted kids getting into shit. 4. Law enforcement investigative tools and forensic science has gotten a better leading to fewer murders are being misclassified as accidental. Also the stigma against suicide has diminished and some life insurance policies even pay out on suicide after a certain number of years, so there’s less motive for the “while cleaning his gun” whitewashing narrative.

Trump about to fire Mueller?
What do you think?
Had Roy Moore won I think it’d be a lot easier for Trump to find traction among elected Republicans for such a move. Now it’s harder, all many of them really want now is to ram through the tax bill to reward their rich donors and then get as far from Trump politically as they can.
Rosenstein also made it clear yesterday that he’s not down with any plan to fire Mueller, so any firing would involve a Saturday Night Massacre scenario followed by massive protests, even possibly a general strike.
The real danger here is that Trump probably accurately feels like he’s cornered and ultimately fucked no matter what he does and he’s the kind of guy who tends to lash out.
re: #235 Lupin

The writer assumes that 1) they’ll pass the tax bill, and 2) that it will be good for Trump (read step 5). It’s the most unpopular piece of legislation in decades and it’s going to hurt a whole lot of Republicans. He will gain no leverage from this bill, and will most likely lose some.

“Let there be no mistake, NPCA strongly opposes this bill. It would set a dangerous precedent by making grazing among the primary purposes of the national park instead of protecting this remarkable landscape for all who visit it. The bill calls for a management council that consists of Utah county officials, without appropriate oversight or input from the National Park Service, the federal agency charged with managing and protecting America’s more than 400 national park sites.

U.S. stocks traded higher on Thursday after Disney agreed to buy some of 21st Century Fox’s assets.
The Dow Jones industrial average gained 52 points and reached an all-time high. The S&P 500 rose 0.1 percent, with financials and industrials leading advancers. The Nasdaq composite advanced 0.2 percent.
Disney said Thursday it will pay $52.4 billion in stock to buy Fox’s movie studios, network Nat Geo, and Asian pay-TV operator Star TV, among other assets.
The acquisition bolsters Disney’s plans to become a dominant streaming service platform, making it a bigger threat to Netflix.

Britain First’s Jayda Fransen in court over Belfast speech https://t.co/LjCSwB9487
— BBC News (UK) (@BBCNews) December 14, 2017
The deputy leader of far-right group Britain First has been re-arrested after appearing in a Belfast court over a speech she gave in the city.
Jayda Fransen, 31, of Beeches Close, Anerley, London, was in court over two charges relating to behaviour intended to or likely to stir up hatred.
Her lawyer told the court that she intended to plead not guilty.
Britain First leader Paul Golding, 35, was also arrested outside the courtroom before the hearing.
Mr Golding was accompanying Ms Fransen to the hearing.
The police confirmed they have arrested a 35-year-old man as part of their investigation into the “Northern Ireland Against Terrorism” rally in August.
It is believed Ms Fransen has been re-arrested over social media posts she made from a peace wall in Belfast on Wednesday.
Peace walls are used to separate Catholic and Protestant residents in areas where tension between the two communities can run high.

re: #234 Unshaken Defiance
Unless the guy in the car with cell phone gets pissed off because he thinks you cut him off because he wasn’t paying attention. Then at the next traffic light he pulls out his gun and comes to your side window and starts blasting away.
Yeah, that is what I am afraid of because since there are more guns were are seeing more people getting shot in road rage accidents.
Earlier this year a friend of mine had a woman, yes a woman, get pissed off at him thinking he cut her off and at a light in his own neighborhood (1/4 mile away from his home) she jumped out and flashed a pistol at him cursing him out. While she was still out of her car, he just gunned it, drove around her through a red light and got the hell out of there.

I wish I could mute this conversation too! But I want to post one thing so those who continue to go round and round at least have a handy resource.
I’ve seen the damn facts misstated so much or just conveniently ignored. Not all accusations were anonymous and between Tweeden and the waist squeeze there are other allegations from different media outlets.
You all can still hold on to your current positions, but let’s keep the facts at the table.
Hopefully Moore’s loss will resonate with a few more Republicans and they’ll make Pence’s staying home from Israel unnecessary as there won’t be 50 votes.

For me, anyway, I’m not comfortable with telling a woman she is attractive unless I am dating her 9or trying to)… in most situations, workplace especially, it’s irrelevant and, although I obviously can’t speak for women, I would think the unspoken reaction would be either “Oh shit, is he hitting on me?” or “Do you think my looks are the sum total of me?”

I think that’s FDR’s copy of Dickens’s A Christmas Carol. It’s entirely possible that Sean is that dumb and has never heard of the novel, not by its correct title anyway. In my experience, many nominally educated conservatives display huge, all but incredible gaps in their general knowledge. I’ve mentioned the medical student who did not know that other countries have their own military forces, separate and distinct from those of the US . This came up during a discussion of her belief that the Moon landings were faked. She thought all “military” everywhere was part of the same organization and took orders from the same source, like a global corporation. Another example: A Lubbock school principal heard me mention that my daughter had gone to MIT and asked what that stood for. He then asked me in all seriousness if that was some kind of 2 year vo-tech school. I got pissed at him for disparaging my daughter’s school, but he managed to convince me that he was entirely serious. “This is Texas, why would we know about some little college in Massachusetts?” he asked.

re: #375 Big Beautiful Door
Pushing implies Franken was left without any choice. He had a choice; they weren’t going to expel him if he refused to resign before the investigation was complete. If I was innocent I wouldn’t have resigned; whether you like it or not, Franken wasn’t innocent, and US Senators expressing their belief he should resign are not a “mob.”
We do not know any of the details of what actually was said to Al by his Senate colleagues and if there was pushing or not. He still may feel innocent but could have seen it as being in a no win situation because too many think like you and trying to fight that was insurmountable.
Sometimes it may just be better to go away. And with the internet and the (anti)social media, that may just be a good choice. Off the grid and let this mess of a country go on without him.

Beijing’s already put us on notice that if we attack Pyongyang, they’ll be declaring war on us in defense of the Kim regime. So if Trump’s advisors are telling him that they can blow up a few targets with Tomahawks and JDAMs and it’ll be “show our resolve,” then they’re out of their fucking minds.
Oh wait, I forgot, the deaths will be “over there,” so they figure that a few million killed in the first day are “acceptable losses.”

I mean, I’m all for this - but “Fightfortheftr” and anybody else who thinks this, Republican-led Congress is going to do jack-diddly-squat against the big-business interests that pay for their campaigns is frankly, dreaming/delusional.
Even leaving aside the fact that the Trump Admin has stacked every Federal agency they possibly can with blatantly pro-corporate hacks (with minimal opposition from Congress -if any), most Republican Reps (and Senators) are overtly proud of their “pro-business” - i.e. corporate whore - status, and convinced that “consumer protection” rules are some evil anti-American (probably Communist) plot against all that is Good.

It’s part of the constant media narrative to excuse evil white people for their evil acts. That’s why we all have to pretend it’s ‘economic anxiety’, or ‘gullibility’, when their vote was never about economics or promises. It was always about what they’re still getting from their media - the ability to express the rage they are fed against brown people and liberals without guilt or remorse.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Ohio Democratic Rep. Marcy Kaptur has told members of her caucus that revealing clothes worn by staffers and some members of Congress are an “invitation” for sexual harassment.
Kaptur’s remarks were first reported by Politico after a private Democratic caucus meeting on Wednesday. The news site reported that Kaptur, the longest serving member in the Ohio delegation, mentioned that she’d seen a member the day before with cleavage so deep “it was down to the floor.”
Kaptur subsequently issued a statement that said her office became a “refuge” for mistreated female staffers when she was first elected. She says it’s something she carries “to this day” and brought it up to during the caucus meeting.
Her statement added that “under no circumstances” is it the victim’s fault if they’re harassed.

Cutting red tape is almost always a winner as talking points go. It sounds like you want to get shit done (which is kind of where the saying comes from). But how you get shit done is (or should be) as important as actually getting it done. And regulations are very much about how shit gets done in this country.
Cheap bacon.
Cheap tomato.
Head of Iceberg lettuce.
Chain store white bread, toasted.
And yet, all together, that BLT is far more than the sum of those parts.
We might not have the parts we want, or the best bits ever, but we can still build something better than we had before we started with what we have. Perhaps not the best or most perfect sandwich, but better than what we started with.
But if I’d thrown out that cheap bacon because it wasn’t good enough even though it wasn’t spoiled? Then no sandwich and we’re worse off than we were before.
A lesson for you while I eat my lunch.

Imma gonna bet he’ll be reaching William Howard Taft proportions before this is all over.
Rick Wilson’s take on the Alabama election. While I don’t agree with a lot of it, his takes on Trump and Bannon are deliciously brutal.
The con game Steve Bannon has pulled on Republicans in the last year-and-a-half goes something like this: Only Bannon and Breitbart have an ear to the ground and a finger on the pulse of the new nationalist movement that’s reshaping conservatism and its own image. The scam centers on the concept that a rising force of nationalists who hate brown people, gay people, and anyone who doesn’t toe the neo-nationalist line is unstoppable, implacable, and at the immediate disposal of Trump and Bannon. The scam puts hatred of the media and “elites” (by which they mean, “people who can read”) before any conservative principle.
We also realized Tuesday night that there is a Newtonian character to Donald Trump’s social-media power. Trump may motivate his part of the Republican base with whatever lunatic batshittery streams from his fingers to his Twitter account, but activating those individuals also brings an equal and opposite reaction from people who don’t breathe through their mouths, don’t read the comments section of Breitbart or /r/The_Donald, or believe that everything wrong in their lives comes from the conspiracy between George Soros and the lizard people.
Yes, Donald Trump gets the base riled up. His rock-bottom approval ratings mean he also activates women, African Americans, Hispanics, and every other demographic group that doesn’t fit into his 1950s (or is it 1850s?) fantasy of what America looks, works, and feels like. Those folks—and for many of you Trump readers, this is a complicated idea, so follow along—comprise what scientists call a majority of voters. And they hate him. They hate him so much they’ll crawl across broken glass to vote against him and any candidate he endorses.

of course there was no alex jones in 1960 either
Oh I’m sure there were plenty of “Alex Jones” types around in 1960: the main difference between then and now is that fringe nutcases like Jones had to rely on limited, low-tech methods (mimeographed newsletters, grainy ads in “mens’” magazines, etc.) to spread their looney-tunes toxicity around. In the marvelous 21st Century, the media environment not only allows cranks like A.J. something like a national (international, really) platform, but also lets those Deplorables who believe in his BS to wallow in it to exclusion of pretty much all else.
