Carried over from the last thread:
re: #312 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))
fine. I support comprehensive immigration reform
unfortunately, that quickly breaks down into cries of “deport them all” and “build a wall”
but true reform would involve a lot of things that people will never accept, like a universal ID card for all citizens and legal residents. It can be as simple as issuing photo SS cards in one version for citizens and another for residents.
It would involve reforming labor laws.
And it would necessarily involve an amnesty for people who have live here, obeyed the law and paid their taxes.
It would involve controlling our borders. A wall is not an answer in itself, some physical restrictions might be needed, but the main restrictions should be legal and administrative.
It degenerates into “deport them all” because that’s what conservatives want to do.
Do you think for a second if I had my citizenship stripped I would be allowed to stay (or draw my VA disability compensation)? I would become a stateless person in an instant with no rights (because Poland wouldn’t take me either).
From dead thread to point out my embarrassment…

I’m not HW, but I can’t say I care for it. That said, it’s a pretty small number of babies involved, and I think not enough of an issue to try to crack down because of the ‘collateral damage’ of limiting birthright citizenship.

1. They are exploiters who should be ashamed of themselves.
2. I don’t know about law, but airlines can reasonably be wary of carrying passengers who are close to term.
3. Let’s not promote wing nut talking points. This is not a major contribution to immigration, it just isn’t a big enough problem to rant and rave about. Yes, it probably happens. Deal with it.

Birth tourism brings Russian baby boom to Miami
Roman Bokeria, the state director of the Florida Association of Realtors told NBC News that Trump- branded buildings in the Sunny Isles Beach area north of Miami are particularly popular with the Russian birth tourists and Russian immigrants.
“Sunny Isles beach has a nickname — Little Russia — because people who are moving from Russian-speaking countries to America, they want … a familiar environment.”
“They go across the street, they have Russian market, Russian doctor, Russian lawyer,” he added. “It’s very comfortable for them.”
Reshetova came to Miami to have her first child, hiring an agency to help arrange her trip. The services — which can include finding apartments and doctors and obtaining visas — don’t come cheap. She expects to pay close to $50,000, and some packages run as high as $100,000. Bokeria says some landlords ask for six months rent up front.

I am concerned that it might be used as an excuse to narrow birthright citizenship.

I know somebody who’s on the case. Two takeaway (because this person cannot say anything). Trump is no match for what he’s up against, and most of the stuff they find will never see the light of day. Baby Bust: Feds Raid California ‘Maternity Hotels’
Southern California apartment complexes that doubled as “maternity hotels” for Chinese women who want made-in-America babies were raided early Tuesday, capping an unprecedented federal sting operation, officials said.
NBC News was on the scene as Homeland Security agents swept into The Carlyle, a luxury property in Irvine, California, which housed pregnant women and new moms who allegedly forked over $40,000 to $80,000 to give birth in the United States.
“I am doing this for the education of the next generation,” one of the women told NBC News.
The phenomenon of foreigners coming to the U.S. to have babies is not new but appears to be growing. One study found that 40,000 children a year are born to women here on a travel visa, the affidavit notes.

Chinese tourist traffic to the islands in the first seven months of this year already matched arrivals for all of 2012, with the figure for July alone rising 49% to 11,177. Overall births in the Northern Marianas have been falling, but the Marianas Variety newspaper reports that births to ethnic Chinese rose 175% between 2010 and 2012 and last year outnumbered those of any other ethnicity.

Any company or person who engages in promoting so-called birth tourism is engaging in a felony. Those are the people who should be arrested and tried, such as the case in California today.
It is not illegal to come to the United States even if you are heavily pregnant. Even if you think you might give birth whilst you’re here.
It is illegal to promote that for the purposes of gaming citizenship in the same way it is illegal to promote marriages to game citizenship.
It is the promoter who should be jailed.

I think being able to buy your offspring citizenship is a scam. What makes these people more worthy of citizenship than the child of an immigrant from the third world?
Yes, it is a scam, if you want to look at it like that. It is also quite a high compliment. I have never given birth but I would think that a young pregnant woman traveling to another country, leaving her home and family at a really sensitive and emotional time, would have to be REALLY motivated by a desire to give her child the opportunity to choose American citizenship. It’s a BFD.
Both groups, whether wealthy from China or Russia or poor from Mexico are doing the same thing., i.e. taking advantage of our birthright laws. Ultimately, only the Russian children may be ultimately welcome as adults if they learn to speak perfect English and thoroughly assimilate. We have well demonstrated the xenophobia of our country the past few years, have we not?
The “buying citizenship” is BS. All of those children born here are citizens. What makes the wealthy ones okay to the Trumps and others at the time of their births is the profit they make from their mothers’ stays while they are here giving them their money. They don’t give a shit otherwise about the poor or the wealthy. They only care about the money right now.

Well, it does seem the election of Trump had an effect on LGF. Not sure why, but that is how it feels.
I started posting before the election but haven’t commented much since. The truth is that seeing what is happening to our country is causing extreme anxiety and mental anguish. I find myself actively hating for the first time; finding myself in the same mode as RWNJs creates a lot of stress.
Sometimes I just want to shut it off and ignore what’s going on, stay narrowly focused on my own life and push away knowledge of all the terrible things being done to other humans.
Since the blog focuses a lot of politics, I can see other folks disengaging for those reasons. There are times where I want to avoid any thought of all the ways the orange buffoon is damaging our country, so even lurking is painful. But disengaging wouldn’t be the responsible adult thing to do, as desirable as it seems.
I’ve found that reading the comments and feeling the sense of community among the folks here reminds me of all the good people out there and of my obligations to resist.
So thanks lizards, for contributing to what sanity I retain. Even if occasionally I read interactions and want to post the video of the lizard farting in a bathtub in response. ;-)

I read something earlier today about an eighteen year-old who started a group to get eighteen to twenty year olds registered to vote.
There is also this:
civicyouth.org
Exit polling in New Jersey and Virginia’s elections seem to indicate that 18-20 year old voters surged in the Virginia elections, which were an important demographic in the outcomes. Over the last eight years, engagement by 18-20 year olds in New Jersey stayed relatively flat, whilst turnout in that demographic doubled to about a third of all those eligible in Virginia. Looking down through the breakdown by parties, Civic Youth cited above notes that in Virginia around 70% of the 18-20 vote went to Ralph Northam and Democratic candidates. 29% went to Ed Gillespie, and the last 1% to other candidates.
In 2013, the vote count was significantly lower for Democrats. (This might also indicate that a combination of disdain for Republicans and Democratic ideas and voter engagement is having an effect: Many voters form their political opinions early in life and do not change much.)
Young voters are the most notoriously apathetic. When motivated to vote, they can have a real impact on local, state, and national elections.
Awesome! Kris Kobach presented his voter fraud stuff in Kansas today (A Daily Kos article written by Chris Reeves, who did a lot to get voter turnout last year in Kansas).
But what rate of false positives exist in comparison to the alarming rate, as Representative Parker pointed out, of 1 potential voter at the top end in every 2 counties in the state? Is the false positive greater or smaller than the rate of totally unverified bad voters?
With that, Representative Vic Miller (D-Topeka) began to think about the statistics being discussed and pivoted to the question that shut down the room: “Secretary of State Kobach, per our records, it appears so far all of the voters prosecuted have been Republicans. Isn’t that an anomaly? Is it odd that 100% of the voter fraud in this state is by Republican voters?” Kobach, answering that he hadn’t checked voter registration in his cases, said he preferred not to speculate. “Maybe,” contended Rep. Miller, “Republicans are genetically predisposed to voter fraud?” the shot, a jab at racist commentary in a town hall by Representative Alford (R-Ulysses) was quickly followed with, “that’s how ridiculous it sounds,”.
Kobach’s initial call to turn local municipality races partisan faced equal responses. Conservative Republican Kristey Williams (R-Augusta) asked, “how does this make sense,”.

But the B-52s do… And trump is as dumb as a rock lobster.
Understand this: An American “president” is ignoring an attack on America and refusing to respond to that attack bc he’s afraid the attack itself will make him look bad because it helped him. Let that sink in. Then, get PISSED OFF!!!

Bryer’s ice cream did the big rip off.
Breyer’s was my favorite ice cream growing up. My parents liked the “all natural” aspect and I liked the taste and mouth-feel (though I didn’t know about mouth-feel back then). Then Breyer’s got bought by a big conglomerate, which also bought Ben & Jerry’s. Big conglomerate decided it should only offer one premium ice cream, so that breyer’s and B&J would not compete against each other. So, Breyer’s went cheap: no more all natural, no more simple ingredients — just more fillers, emulsifiers, and what not.
Now Breyer’s is really no different from any store brand ice cream, but I reckon people buy it because like me they grew up with fond memories. Brand loyalty.

After Suicide Video, YouTube Cuts Business Ties With Logan Paul
Gee, finally YT takes some action!
No matter how I look at this, YouTube comes out bad. And it’s not just the Aokigahara video. As much as it pains me, I agree with PewDiePie. YT has been extremely lenient with the Pauls, despite everything they’ve done.

Agreed.
I am deeply troubled by the reports that President Trump personally interviewed Geoffrey Berman to permanently fill the post of Manhattan U.S. attorney, and find it disqualifying, considering the potential conflicts of interest on matters that could affect the president himself.

No actual quotes from OW about her “anti science”, “anti vaccine” views.
She might have had people on her shows to give their views on various topics, but i have not seen her push those views to try and get regulations or legislation to endorse them, like the right does all the time. She is in the infotainment business, and she might have put the wrong people on her shows, but whenever I saw someone like Jenny McCarthy on her show pushing her views, I knew she was full of shit. And any sane person should also be able to see this.
Plus comments from the diary like this, “Even if it means another four years of Trump. We need to have at least one party that supports science in this country. “
The fact that people on “our side” have been losing their minds for over two news cycles about an oprah run which hasn’t even been corroborated is ridiculous, and I haven’t heard one word about her on the news shows I’ve watched tonight.
Unfortunately this is the era we live in. The fast food attention span, idiocracy, etc where a celebrity can get elected to the highest office, and there are worse celebrities to consider. Kid Rock, the Rock, Kanye West.

It’s what happens when a small company sells itself to (or gets bought by) a larger concern. The ethics and mission of the founders is lost, as the new owners take advantage of the brand loyalty the small company created.

I saw them in the late 70’s. (told this before, but let me re-live it!)
It was WILD. We drove from North Palm Beach to Ft Lauderdale on a school night.
I dyed my hair purple with food coloring, had a thrift shop 50’s dress & those plastic shoes. My date wore ripped white jeans.
We were freaking out the whole drive down thinking we would look so ridiculous.
Get there & see a girl wearing a top and pantyhose, nothing underneath.
Another girl with a lobster on her head.
We were tame.
This was when they held the toy piano for the ping ping ping ping.

It was a simple model. Breyer’s was hipster long before it was hip to be all-natural. Cost maybe 2x as much as other brands, but my parents decided it was worth it. You could really tell the difference between Breyer’s and other brands. Now not so much.
I also remember how crushed I was when I learned Haagen Dazs was not really an imported brand, but was just an overpriced domestic brand with a foreign-sounding name.

Like Isaly’s here in Ohio. Now the name is on Klondike Bars owned by some other corporation. For the longest time they had a great selection of real ice cream and killer sherberts. All that is gone. Oh yeah, a good snack bar too with their “chip chop ham” sandwiches that people loved.
But now we see the cycle come around again as Columbus has Jeni’s which is wildly popular…in spite of issues a few years back. She’ll probably grow big, sell off and then be gone too sometime.

They were already royalty in Athens by the time I got to college in Atlanta and somehow never saw them. I also missed Pylon (damnit). I saw REM in a small club once (and they came to my friend’s freshman comp class—I filled in for him that day and got to hear Michael and Peter talk about their second album). Swimming Pool Qs were constant favorites. And I had classes with the Indigo Girls (and saw them many times when they were just getting started).
re: #188 Stanley Sea
Bryer’s ice cream did the big rip off.
In more ways than one.
I remember when Breyers’ was still part of Kraft and had no artificial additives in their ice cream products. After getting bought by Unilever, they have systematically not only reduced the size of their packaging (moving from 2 quart to 1.75, then to 1.5 quart containers), they also have completely abandoned the no-additives stance to the point that several of their products are no longer allowed to be called ice cream due to the fact they have almost no cream at all in them anymore.

AthensAtlanta?
Like Pylon, B-52s, and Swimming Pool Qs, I knew of Love Tractor from my older brother’s record collection (he DJ-ed at his small college in Ohio and brought home promo albums while I was in high school). I went to Atlanta in fall of ‘83. They may have been still going, but I didn’t get to see them. I didn’t have a car until my junior year and that’s when I started going to 688 and midtown (saw RuPaul dancing). I actually went to Athens to see cousins a couple of times, but I never went to 40 Watt or anywhere else to see the scene—huge regrets. When I was in high school late-night djs at the University of Illinois station WPGU were pushing the REM EP “Chronic Town” hard and i was a big fan, so I was excited to get to see them up close.
re: #240 wheat-dogg

I remember seeing a TV ad for it back in the 1970s.
The one ice cream I really missed was Godiva licensed their name to some company in Texas (I think ) and they made a Belgian Dark Chocolate that was to DIE FOR. Unfortunately, due to circumstances, that went away….

That’s the first thing I thought, too.
wow, what an exciting year for president trump, fulfilling all his campaign promises!! hillary is dying in a prison hospital, obamacare has been repealed down to the last letter and replaced by a system that covers more people and is cheaper, mexico is paying for the wall which is ahead of schedule and under budget, muslims are now banned from entering the united states, we forcebly deported over a million illegal aliens in 2017, terrorist attacks are a thing of the past, whole factories are being uptooted and moved back to the midwest, and trump never has to negotiate or even talk with democrats since they are totally powerless!!
best of all, president trump is vigorously setting the agenda for the republican party by sending bills to the congress instead of just supinely (oh, sorry, used a big word) signing whatever RINO/globalist legislation ryan and mcconnell put on his desk
isn’t it glorious to hear the chorus of praise resounding across all public forums praising the wisdom, sagacity, maturity, stability, and leadership of our glorious president trump! what a beautiful gigantic statue of our dear leader trump in trump square facing the former white house, now named the golden palace of the eternal wisdom of our dear leader trump who will rule forever!!
