Unless you believe that the anonymous Op-Ed was from the Deep State, despite the fact that Woodward has got all the tapes and his book is clearly akin to all his previous books which were based on verifiable facts.

I like it too, but the op-ed is very Republican establishment and they don’t have any reason to turn on Pence. Or do they?
Anyone else seeing “Just Do It” as “Just Dolt”? Especially for the Flynn one. Just a dolt.
tbh… I could give a shit who wrote the memo… it really doesn’t matter to me in the grand scheme of things. What matters to me is that these folks have subverted the constitution in order to continuing to promote and implement their own political agenda.
If Trump is unfit, then declare him so and have him step down and promote the VP into the position. Yes, I understand that Pence doesn’t have an IQ above melted ice cream, but again… that doesn’t matter. You follow the law. You abide by the Constitution. Isn’t that what these fucking originalists were all about?
The GOP (I’m sure) knows what the score is and how we have a “caretaker” government of GOP apparatchiks running the show and despite knowing that this is against the law, so they’re on board with this too…..
Once upon a time, I really thought the GOP was going to generate their own Reichstag fire as an excuse to make all of this permanent, instead, it appears that they’ve chosen a less obvious but just as illegal way to continue to control the process…. they get to let Trump continue to take fire, use him as a prop to continue showing the rubes how persecuted they all are (with Faux telling them said same every damn day) and still all the while, continue to subvert the country and loot us of both our money, and our legal rights….
I’m at the point right now, that I would love Mueller to drop a few more indictments of members of Congress and the Senate and put the motherfucking kibosh on their entire house of cards….

Only one of them truly benefits personally from destabilizing Trump further. I think Coats both doesn’t have that motive and is too smart for a stunt like this. Pence, not so much.

I think whoever wrote it wants Pence to be President, and only Pence has the right combination of raw ambition, perceived divine right / provenance, and pure fuck-witted idiocy to think this might work.

Another reason I think it’s Pence is that it makes sense that he’d be at a crisis point where he somehow thought throwing gasoline on the dumpster fire of the administration was the only way he might ever be President. All of the other suspects would obviously prefer order over Trump’s chaos and I’m sure they’re frustrated and hoping to ameliorate Trump’s worst tendencies just as the op-ed says, but to my mind none of them have the perfect alignment that Pence does of cui bono, myopia and ego.

Letter to the Editor of the Scottsbluff (Nebr.) Star-Herald calling out my representative Adrian Smith (I only represent Republicans, NE-3) for failing to respond to Paul Theobald (D) and his request for a debate prior to the election.
A common part of any election cycle is a debate between contenders for a political office. This is especially true and necessary for federal office seekers.
Adrian Smith has not responded to Paul Theobald to debate crucial issues related to the Third District Congressional Seat. Adrian Smith has voted for the legislative and policy initiatives promoted by President Trump and the Republican Party.
Adrian Smith needs to defend his representative actions on the following issues impacting citizens in the Third District:
• Donald Trump’s trade war is depressing the Nebraska agricultural economy putting farmers and ranchers in a welfare situation.
• The Affordable Care Act is being replaced by junk health insurance and fewer people in Nebraska having health insurance.
• Republican immigration policies are impacting workers in Nebraska and limiting the supply of immigrants with needed technical skills for Nebraska businesses.
• Large amounts of political support money from sources outside of Nebraska tend to buy political support for Republicans divide their efforts between outside pressures and the interests of Nebraska residents.
• Climate change is a huge concern in a state based on agriculture, climate change stresses crops and livestock.
• There is a permanent tax break for the rich tax payers and a rapidly declining tax break for other tax payers.
• We need reasonable regulations to rein in corruption, protect our quality of life, and afford everyone an equal opportunity in Nebraska.
Adrian Smith needs to tell Nebraskans how his time in office has helped them achieve a better quality of life. Third District voters need to learn about Paul Theobald’s plans to better represent Nebraskans regarding the issues listed above.

One problem with that would be if the “trusted individual” (for example, his speechwriter) suddenly decided to go public.
Moreover, presuming the Times’s statement about the letter was correct (that the person would be in danger of losing his job if his name was released), that wouldn’t be Pence, as he is elected; he cannot be fired from the job of Vice-President.
I have no idea what is up with this op-ed, but it was sure was convenient to deflect from today’s news (Mr. Woodward’s book and the Senate hearings on the Supreme Court).

This has been a far right hobby horse for a while. I saw more than a bit of it in my Federalist Society days. The idea is based on some arcane notion
of how one’s birth determines one’s loyalty. As if there’s a difference between being born 20 miles north or 20 miles south of a river. And then there’s a whole thing about how because a parent might not “be subject to the jurisdiction” of the US (which they take to mean “illegal”), then that calls into question an infant’s loyalty. None of it makes any kind of sense in the modern world if you think about it for more than 15 seconds.that white people in America are the only ones who should enjoy citizenship.
You wrote a lot, but what that meant was this.
re: #53 Bass Reeves
You wrote a lot, but what that meant was this.
Only certain white people. Preferably Christian conservative white people.
Trump’s idea of going after Hispanics for their citizenship (somehow I imagine he got that idea from Steven Miller or Rep. Steve King, how many racist Steves are there in the GOP anyway?) due to being born to midwives and therefore their birth certificates are invalid means if some codswallop like that was actually upheld, he could go after me as well. (Or President Carter.) King thinks I should be deported anyway, and conservatives have been on about “birthright citizenship” all my life.

Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif 50) leads his Democratic opponent Ammar Campa-Najjar by seven points, whether or not Republicans were aware of the charges against Hunter.
Campa-Najjar leads amongst younger voters and urban voters; Hunter amongst older voters and rural and suburban voters.
The poll was conducted for the San Diego Union-Tribune at the end of August.
State polling (as shown in elections this year) continues to be notoriously bad, so who knows what’s up.
Opinion piece by Steven Pike, which lines up with some of those here (including me):
Anonymous White House Writer Isn’t A Patriot. They’re Betraying The Constitution.
I encountered many approaches to faithfully executing the law during my more than two decades in government. I saw officials seek to bend the rules to achieve their desired outcomes, and I saw officials demonstrate reverent respect for the law as they performed their elected and appointed functions. Never in my career have I witnessed anything on the magnitude of the tale told Wednesday by an anonymous senior administration official in a New York Times op-ed. I imagine I am far from alone.
The nearest historical analogy I can name ― and it is a poor one ― for the efforts of the author and others to “thwart” President Donald Trump’s “agenda and worst inclinations” is Edith Wilson’s assumption of power following President Woodrow Wilson’s stroke in 1919. Her abrogation of political power was, in fact, one of the historical events that drove passage of the 25th Amendment to regularize and codify how the republic deals with an incapacitated president.

Pence also has the luxury of being the only person in the building that Trump can’t fire, since he’s technically an independently elected constitutional officer. Exactly. I pointed this out earlier today.
Tomorrow is going to be absolute war between Trump and Pence. One of the reasons that Pence thought he could get away with this is that he can’t be fired. He felt safe enough to backstab Trump, who could demand that the House GOP impeach him as VP but that is NOT going to happen.

In jeopardy could mean a lot of things. Like I said the House GOP could hypothetically impeach him, and I wouldn’t put it past Trump and the GOP base to call for that if evidence mounts that it was Pence and he refuses to properly atone or resign.
The obvious problem with that plan is that the automatic replacement for Pence is Paul Ryan, and after November it’s likely to be a Democrat, probably Nancy Pelosi.

Senator John McCain put it best in his farewell letter. All Americans should heed his words and break free of the tribalism trap, with the high aim of uniting through our shared values and love of this great nation.
Pence is too much of a partisan hack to actually say something like that, let alone believe it. So I’m less inclined to believe it’s Pence. (Plus, Pence was Manafort’s guy, which likely means he had the tacit approval of Putin.) Not really sure who in the White House I could honestly believe would say something like this? The Trump Administration isn’t even the B-Team of Republican circles, it’s like the Z-Team at best.
re: #69 KGxvi

Pretty sure that’s not true. Gerald Ford, as Speaker of the House, was automatically selected to become VP when Spiro Agnew resigned as per the 25th Amendment.

The jackass is even a minister at his local church. Assholes like him are why I’ve turned my back on organized religions my whole life.
Well, religion (whether organised or not) tends to attract people who want to be told what to do or think.
Speaking of religion:
In letters sent over the past several days to Omaha Archbishop George Lucas, Lincoln Bishop James Conley and Grand Island Bishop Joseph Hanefeldt, Peterson is requesting any information on claims of sexual exploitation — including incidents of child pornography or “sexual communication with another person” — by anyone with authority to carry out church functions from Jan. 1, 1978, to the present.
This is not a polite request, according to a national expert on state attorneys general. Peterson’s office said state law gives him joint criminal jurisdiction in all 93 counties.
Archbishop George Lucas stated today the Church would reply with the state government’s request, basically arguing that sunlight is the best disinfectant.
(Omaha World-Herald, more at the link)
That seems to be a quite different stance than the Roman Catholic Church (or indeed any church) takes when asked to turn over records which might detail criminal activity.

As opposed to
a goat fucking rodeo.
Ford was nominated by Nixon. For the most part, Democrats felt that as Agnew was elected as a Republican, and Nixon was a Republican, Nixon should get a pick from his own party under the XXV Amendment.
Ford was nominated to take Agnew’s position on October 12, the first time the vice-presidential vacancy provision of the 25th Amendment had been implemented. The United States Senate voted 92 to 3 to confirm Ford on November 27. Only three Senators, all Democrats, voted against Ford’s confirmation: Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin, Thomas Eagleton of Missouri and William Hathaway of Maine. On December 6, 1973, the House confirmed Ford by a vote of 387 to 35. One hour after the confirmation vote in the House, Ford took the oath of office as Vice President of the United States.

re: #83 goddamnedfrank
Man, if it is Pence, and I’m like 97% certain it is, then we’re in for quite the shitshow.
The political equivalent of the Chernobyl disaster.
Ultimate meltdown.
Pretty sure this is all academic anyway since I don’t see Pence resigning and I don’t see the GOP wanting to worsen the narrative of horrid dysfunction that an impeachment attempt would create. Most likely scenario is Pence gets frozen out and is only allowed to preside over and break ties in the Senate because that’s pretty much the only thing the Constitution sets aside for him.
What if, like Mr. Throat, we really don’t find out who the masked op-eder is for years?

Mark Felt was actually competent. The decision to write and publish this thing is the polar opposite of that.
That depends on what the writer was trying to accomplish.
If it was to troll liberals or deflect from the Kavanaugh proceedings, it did a masterful job.
If it was meant to shiv Vice-President Pence (by using his verbiage) it also does a masterful job.
If it is to circumvent the Constitution, the letter argues that a fait accompli has already happened and the writer is part of it. That’s damn bold, basically saying “we’re in charge here” not the guy who was elected right on the NYT’s op-ed page.
That last item has people here rightly concerned, along with foreign policy experts, pundits, and constitutional lawyers:
GOP sychophancy is disturbing, but it can get a lot worse. What else to look out for:

I don’t think the op-ed writer is Pence. White House leakers have been careful to use other people’s language to hide their identity for a while now.
My guess would be Mnuchin. Relatively social moderate but a tax and trade guy — 2 issues the op-ed writer indicated were most important to him.

tbh… I could give a shit who wrote the memo… it really doesn’t matter to me in the grand scheme of things.
Damnit, man! “Could not” give a shit. You are directly responsible for the breakdown of civilization here.

It was reported this morning that initial unemployment claims fell to only 203k, the lowest level in nearly 49 years when the workforce was half the current size, so Americans continue to enjoy unprecedented job security. Thanks Obama!
This is my personal theory for why Cheeto Benito’s approval numbers are still so (relatively) high: the ~21% “Strongly Approve” is his cult, while the rest are GOPers/Independents too embarrassed to identify as GOPers who have the exact same attitude as the OP/ed writer - But muh tax cuts! Muh deregulation! Muh high stock market and job numbers that I no longer have to credit the black guy with!

RESET THE CLOCK!
Hey, today’s a good day to talk about gun control. IT’s been way too long since Columbine. Or VA Tech. Or San Bernadino. Or Dallas. Or Binghamton. Or any school shooting.
But the GOP/NRA have only one answer to this - sell MORE guns.
We’re the only nation in the OECD that has the kind of carnage we have here - and it’s due to the easy availability of guns to people who should not have them, easy access to guns that should not be in civilian hands, and the cost to society includes all the health care costs, mental health costs, lost productivity, and incarceration/criminal justice costs.
Please go there with this turd.

OK: no parliamentarian I, but I’m kinda hazy as to exactly what sort of “charges” Cornyn, or any individual Senator can “bring” against another - or group of others. IIRC (probably not) the Senate’s internal discipline rules pretty much amount to 1) a formal censure by the entire body, or 2) bitching and griping in the cloakroom (and/or the press).
As frustrating as it is to witness, I have to admit that I’m proud to see the Kavanaugh process is working as it was intended by our Founders, which is to keep me from doing anything productive with my day.

Of course, it is but you can’t tell me that part of the problem is we elected someone who has no idea about governing. I don’t think Nixon is stupid like Trump is but I do think she’d be way out of her league being governor of our third largest state without any governing experience.
Trump is supposedly a businessman. Now, I know, we all saw through his scam, but his other sell was his experience. And no, he’s not failing because he is running the government like a business. He’s failing because he has no clue (and I think is barely holding onto sanity).
Really, though, all I’m arguing against is that somehow being a celibrity should be a disqualifier. I think arguments of qualifications are completely valid.
this entire thread…yikes!
some highlights:
They made up new rules to assign a “committee confidential” label, without precedent, to documents that reveal Kavanaugh’s beliefs on matters he would rule on during his lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court.
They are deliberately hiding important and revealing writings. 2/— Rep. Don Beyer (@RepDonBeyer) September 6, 2018
Despite Republican attempts to hide them, warning signs abound.
This is a terrible process, for a nominee with much to hide, who was put forward by a President whose lawyer says he ordered them to commit crimes. #StopKavanaugh 8/8— Rep. Don Beyer (@RepDonBeyer) September 6, 2018

Anyone here driving a Kia? They seem to be the cheapest autos out there as well as somewhat “what’s a credit rating? mine is -8000” friendly. Looking online at either the Rio coupe or the Soul sort-of SUV (FWD not AWD) as both are coming in with payments under $250 a month, buy or lease.
Any other suggestions?
re: #266 HappyWarrior
The House is honestly a bit different than a Senate seat or Governorship IMO. I hear what you’re saying but at the same time, I’m tired of arrogant outsiders who think they can just go in and do this. It’s exactly why we’re stuck with Trump right now.
No, we have Trump because of our citizens voting for him.
And that is why celebrities can run and win.
We are a democracy and we get what we vote for.
The problem is us (the collective USA).
But, I’ll ask this: Why is Nixon doing so well against Cuomo? From what I read, she did well in the debate against him. And where were the other challengers?

Fair enough. I understand what you’re saying and I agree Trump is unique in this regard but stil, I haven’t seen anything from Nixon that indictates that she understands governing New York. Her whole sell to me honestly seems to me is “I’m more progressive than Cuomo, vote for me.” And honestly that would be fit on a much lower basis but being a governor is os much more than ideology.

Possibility one: Donald Trump is incompetent and incapable, and because Congress and his cabinet refuse to take the constitutionally-mandated steps for dealing with that (impeachment or invoking the 25th Amendment), a group of unelected folks who effectively answer to nobody are ignoring both the law and the structure of the executive branch in a desperate attempt to minimize the damage done.
Possibility two: Trump is presently not properly subject to impeachment and/or invocation of the 25th Amendment, but has so fully lost control of his staff that a group of unelected folks who effectively answer to nobody are utterly flaunting his constitutionally-delegated authority, and so are effectively in the midst of waging a coup-d-état.
To put the two possibilities more simply, either the rebels are justified in what they are doing, which would mean Trump needs to go, or the rebels are not justified, which would mean they need to go. Until one (or possibly both) of those two things happens, the executive branch is dangerously dysfunctional.
either way “a group of unelected folks who effectively answer to nobody” are wielding power that is not theirs
the ‘unelected judges’ argument is always a silly one - they are duly appointed

Nixon isn’t exactly doing well. Polling still shows her down by something like 30 points, though the data is pre-debate.
Celebrity politicians aside. I am loving this show of solidarity over Kavanaugh. All the Republicans and right wingers complaining about it need to talk to Judge Garland who didn’t even get so much as a hearing. Kavanaugh has gotten that. He’s also exposed himself to be an ugly person and a liar undeserving of a SCOTUS seat.
re: #280 JordanRules
I think it’s fair to at least consider her full resume - education, advocacy etc.
I am truly conflicted on this one, but I obviously defer to yall to know who to elect since I’m not an NYer and I also defer to the general principle that primaries are good and healthy.
I probably have to make the judgement on a case by case basis and let people run. Celebrity can mean so much and so little. All the offices and circumstances are different.
I am a both sides-er on this. Ack!
Nixon’s heart is in the right place, I’ll give her that - she’s been in the fight for LGBT rights and supports Planned Parenthood and the DREAM act.
But as Lawhawk pointed out, New York is a very complex place, and with it come very complex issues. It ain’t amateur hour, and she’d likely get chewed up by the career politicians in this state. It’s an office that demands a fair amount of procedural experience.
re: #288 William Lewis
Payments under $250/month is what everyone wanted back in the day when I worked in auto sales (late 1990’s, at a Saturn dealer).
Pretty good, I’d say, depending of course on whether that’s in your disposable income range.

I mean I have more respect for her than the random businessman who just decides he’s fed up with Washington/Albany or whatever capital. I just don’t see her being effective at governing the state of New York. I think she really thinks New York just needs a more ideologically progressive governor and things will be better and I’m sorry to say that it’s just not that simple.
re: #202 The Very Reverend Battleaxe of Knowledge
50 years late, but:
I heard Dame Bell Burnell on the BBC this morning. She wouldn’t say that it made up for being snubbed for the Nobel, but I suspect it does. She’s also setting up a scholarship fund to increase diversity in physics with the $3 million prize. She talked about what someone such as a refugee could bring to the table with education. She also talked about how she was convinced a mistake had been made when she first went down to Cambridge for her PhD. She said she’d never been that far south in the UK in her life (born in northern Ireland, did her bachelor’s at Glasgow University).
As someone who has been an astronomy buff since I learned how to read (and remembers the excitement over the discovery of pulsars), I am pleased she’s getting this belated recognition.
re: #292 HappyWarrior
She’s got specific positions and differences that appeal to a lot of people, including me. Not sure I would vote for her if I lived there, but she’s on the ground, doing the work and is pushing a very calibrated, contrastive message like Pressley did in MA.

Unlike his father, Andrew Cuomo is not a likeable guy. I vote for him because, for the most part, he’s on my side. But it’s never been a very enthusiastic vote. He’s opaque to the media, if not overtly hostile. He’s sometimes really bad when it comes to supporting fellow Democrats, especially when it comes to the mess that is the State Senate and the IDC. He doesn’t get along well at all with deBlasio in NYC. He was very slow out of the gate on same-sex marriage and even more so on marijuana.
Which is to say, I don’t think I’m at all alone in wanting a better Democrat in that office. Whether that’s Nixon or not is a different question.

I do hope she pushes Cuomo to the left though. I have no problem with that. I understand why New Yorkers aren’t exactly fond of Cuomo for the reasons Ipsos said.
Trump also won the Republican primary because a whole lot of people ran. Had it been only a couple, he wouldn’t have lasted very long.

Whoever said Kamala Harris may already have Kavanaugh dead to rights on discussing the Mueller investigation with Trump’s lawyers may well be right.
Kasowitz’s memo to Mueller from June 2017 cites a somewhat obscure bit of dicta from a Kavanaugh opinion in 2013 on the presidents ability to end a criminal investigation (it was by Kavanaugh only; the other judge in the panel majority didn’t join)

Toyota Corolla or a Honda Civic. 2018 leftovers coming up. Base models have a lot going for them. And they get close to 40 MPG highway even with a heavy foot You can realistically look at getting over 250K with proper oil changes, tires, blah blah.
They work. They hold up. And they retain resell value. We still have a 2010 Corolla and a 2012 Civic. And they have given us zero problems. Civic is my wife’s and has 213,000 and I think it’s good for 400K. She drives it 100 mile round trip daily.
Look at all of them on the road.

Ah, and who gets to define “inappropriate”?
“Inappropriate” has been one of the moron-in-chief’s favorite words for a very long time, and his hangers-on love to use it as well.
I still remember Carrie Prejean telling Larry King over and over how inappropriate is was for him to ask about her lawsuit with the Miss Universe pageant.
“Well, I actually was watching,” Trump said. “I am a big fan of Larry King and I was watching this and I was very surprised to see it because she was talking about how inappropriate [Larry King] was.”
Prejean was on the show Wednesday night to promote her new book and seemed to take exception to King’s line of questioning regarding a lawsuit involving the former beauty queen and the Miss Universe pageant.
After telling host King that she wouldn’t discuss what happened in mediation because it was confidential, Prejean called his line of questioning “inappropriate,” removed her microphone and appeared to be ready to leave the set.
In speaking with HLN’s “Showbiz Tonight’s” Brooke Anderson, Trump said he just didn’t get it.
” ‘Inappropriate’ is more of a sexual term, as far as I’m concerned,” Trump said. “I mean — inappropriate? He asked a very, very easy question and I was surprised that she just didn’t say, ‘Hey, listen, I can’t answer that question.’ Instead she wants to walk off the stage? It was very surprising.”

What is bizarre about Trump commenting on the Catholic church scandals is that it breaks another norm, which is presidents just don’t comment on church issues. But every freaking norm has been broken with Trump. Every single one.
I could see someone asking Obama about this and him having a competent answer. In no other slice of life would we think it’s normal for the President to sustain a tradition of silence in the face of enormous criminality, criminality of the worst kind.

Fair enough. Maybe I am being too hard on her. But I will add that Pressley had a record of accomplishment to run on. I just thinking going from actress/activist to governing New York is a giant jump.
Especially if she believes, as she seems to, that the governor of New York State exists solely to serve the interests of New York City.
There’s 10 million people upstate who believe the governor’s primary job is to insulate them from the city and its needs; they sure don’t want to pay for it. “You’re so do damn rich, you got your Wall Street, pick up your own tab.”

Here’s a full-on review of the Fabia, in English (by a German fellow):

It’s a damn shame they’re not available in the US. They’re great commuter cars that won’t take a big bite out of your wallet.
Since they are not sold in America I was not aware Skoda’s are priced lower than VWs in Europe. Interesting.
I don’t think people are aware of how many cars are built on that platform.
If interested here is Wiki on the Volkswagen Group MQB platform
VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda all have different models using that base frame.
(Yeah, Imma VW nut. I know some of the Japanese cars are good cars…but I really like to drive and I like the handling and feel of them over some of the Japanese cars. Just my opinion.)

But the fact is that upstate NY needs Wall Street tax revenues more than Wall Street/NYC needs upstate. Tracing revenues shows NYC gets back a fraction of the money it sends to the state. The MTA is just the biggest target since the governor directly controls.
