Looking at that photo, if the wind picks up a bit more or if there is more smoke, it will be over my town. (Next county to the east of the ones showing Scottsbluff and Harrisburg.)

Wow, that’s a deep geography lesson.///
As for the air: I empathize. When half of Canada was on fire a month and a half ago, the wild north country was enveloped in their smouldering remains. It actually looked more than slightly creepy, being cloudless late-summer days, but the sun was visibly diminished.

re: #1 Charles Johnson
It might be worth googling some youtube videos of Yates McKendree. All I can say is that he doesn’t look 15.
Recorded over four days in the summer of 2017 that included the August 21st solar eclipse, the album marks both a period of personal metamorphosis for Hiatt and, in many ways, a musical return to form. Stripping his rootsy sound down to bare bones, Hiatt recorded the album as part of a trio of guitar, bass (Patrick O’Hearn), and drums (Kenneth Blevins).
The trio set up shop at friend and fellow musician Kevin McKendree’s home studio on his farm outside of town. McKendree added the occasional organ part to tracks, while his 15-year-old son, Yates McKendree, played additional guitar and engineered the LP. “Yates was our secret ingredient,” Hiatt says. The group recorded “around 15 songs” over the course of six days, 11 of which would make the final cut.

During this whole kerfuffle, I had a friend of mine talking about why this is the first time she posted - in public - about her sexual assault aboard ship in the US Navy. I had known about it for years and could vouch for the fact that she hesitated to talk about it on account of no one would believe her word over a man’s.
re: #1 Charles Johnson
That clean guitar playing swampy licks throughout kills me. Don’t know who it is, but some very tasty shit with jazz inflections. Swamp jazz.
From American Song Writer:
Hiatt recorded The Eclipse Sessions in Nashville with producer Kevin McKendree, drummer Kenneth Blevins, bassist Patrick O’Hearn, and guitarist/engineer Yates McKendree. The bulk of the album was recorded in the style of a trio, a decision made to allow plenty of space for Hiatt’s distinct voice and guitar styling to come through.
Ahead of The Eclipse Sessions’ release, Hiatt has shared a new track, “Over The Hill,” which perfectly encapsulates that stripped-down trio vibe. Hiatt’s rhythmic acoustic guitar and a laid-back beat from Blevins provide a rootsy backdrop for bluesy electric guitar licks and soulful verses from Hiatt, who uses the track to explore the personal growth often brought forth by aging.
I’m not clear whether they mean Hiatt was on electric or Yates McKendree was. Either way, it’s well done.

Lack of self-awareness seems to be a requirement to be a RWNJ pundit nowadays.
Some needs to create a Tomany Looren Hallowe’en costume: an American flag one-piece swim suit, yoga pants, bleach-blonde wig, and a fake Glock stuck in the front waistband of the yoga pants, preferably humming with blinking lights.
The learned folk at Wikipedia are on the hoochie-coochie case:
Hoochie coochie
The hoochie coochie (/ˌhuːtʃi ˈkuːtʃi/) is a catch-all term to describe several sexually provocative belly dance-like dances. Also spelled hootchy-kootchy and a number of other variations, It is often associated with “The Streets of Cairo, or the Poor Little Country Maid” song, also known as “the snake charmer song.”
Such dances, or something similar, were performed at the Crystal Palace Exhibition in London in 1851, the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876, and the World’s Fair in Paris in 1889] Although such dances became wildly popular in the United States during the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893, there is no evidence of them being known by the name, “Coochie Coochie” until about a year after the fair closed, and “Hoochie Coochie” about a year later

Sounds like my family. Do what needs to be done. And then have dinner.
So I had another Shitty Human Celebrity sighting today. I though it may have been the dry desert air, elevation, lack of regular copious amounts of fine distilled spirits. But alas, I was correct, and it happened to fast to react. With my Fam eating lunch in front of the market at the Grand Canyon South Rim park, and a silver SUV pulls up with two MAWG’s.
(Middle Age White Guys)
Two more MAWGs walk up with a few six packs of acceptable micro brew and groceries, slide in. The biggest and whitest dude slide in the back seat and one of the younger MAWGs opened the door for him and shut it. I was like ‘That MAWGy Mofo looks like Ryan Zinke.’ But they skulked away.
Thinking about it later at a nice drink well, I noticed there were James Mattis and Brett Kavanaugh doppelgangers and I’m thinking no, I’m seeing things.
Then I see this.
Missed another oppo to call out a shitburger. I saw Michelle Malkin in a wine shop a year ago but she was with her kids and husband and despite my cold stare wasn’t feeling compelled to make any scene. But if I saw Zinke with a little prep I prob would have said some crap about selling off the Grand Canyon to polluters. Channel Auntie Maxine.

Norwegian extreme music legend Fenriz is getting ready to release Arctic Thunder, the new album from his foundational black metal band Darkthrone, but he’s hit an unexpected speed bump. After agreeing to join a “backup list” of potential candidates for the local neighborhood council in Kolbotn, a suburb of Oslo, he was unexpectedly elected.
“They called and asked if I wanted to be on the list [of backup representatives],” he explained. “I said yeah, thinking I would be like 18th on the list and I wouldn’t really have to do anything. They just need a list to be able to … well, it’s hard to talk local politics in another language.”

So the claim is all the witnesses Prof. Ford has named have denied being at the party. You can be sure that the SJC Republicans will make a point of bringing that up at the hearing, even though they will not call a single one of those women or the other man named in the allegations to testify under oath, nor will they subpoena them if they refuse to appear. They’re “investigating” these allegations in the same manner a small-town sheriff does, i.e. going around to “talk” with the witnesses before concluding the victim is just “looking for attention” or “cried rape because she regretted agreeing to sex.”

Hot take op-ed headline from the Los Angeles Times
How close is #MeToo to full riot mode?
“The Godfather” ends with a famous scene in which each of the heads of the five most powerful New York mafia families is assassinated. One is exiting a gilded elevator. One is in a white tuxedo. One is on the steps of the Foley Square courthouse. One is on a massage table. One is in bed with a prostitute.
They’re relishing their privileges, in other words. And suddenly they’re gone.
So far, despite the feminist anger that now burns brightly from sea to shining sea, no one has been shot point-blank in the eye at the behest of #MeToo. And though hundreds of men by my estimate — Vox had it at 219 in May — have been questioned or sidelined following credible reports of sexual harassment and abuse, violence is unlikely, right? Among feminists, assassins are few. Female activists don’t tend to riot, either.

Well, instead, I plugged gozer into Google Translate.
It came back as Dutch for ‘guy’ with a synonym of geezer. So I looked up the origination of geezer which came back guiser and the fact that in British English it means well-dressed and also refers to a mummer. And of course, the root of guiser is ‘guise’. Which comes from the Middle English ‘gyse’, which derived from th Old French ‘guisse’(guise, manner, way) , which came from the Old Frankish ‘wisa’ (manner, way, fashion)
By the way, if you have a minute, I am intrigued,
1. Was Google Translate accurate on gosar?
2. Is there a root in Swedish similar to guise or wisa?

1. Indeed it was. Cuddles in the present tense. Another word with the same meaning is “myser”, often evoking a mental picture two kids and two parents eating snacks in front of the telly, as in “Fredagsmys”, a totally untranslatable Swedish word. A word of warning though, is that “fredagsmys” is a required behavior if living in Sweden for any length of time, just like “fika”.

I have been curious about linguistic history of the English language over the past few years. And of course English originated from Old Norse. I have a cousin who lives in Hamburg, who has remarked on the linguistic similarities of the Low Countries dialects to English. (Frisian reportedly is the closest living language to English.)
It’s fascinating to learn of other nations’ and groups’ implicit cultural contexts. Such as the “Fredagsmys” you mentioned. I recently learned of the Danish ‘hygge’ only to find out that it was passe and ‘lagom’ was the in concept these days.
Additionally, I have recently been listening to some Swedish language folk music groups such as Gjallerhorn and Ranarim. Reportedly the song below has a lot of cultural and historical contexts to it.

Tranlated Lyrics:
She was convicted by the words of two young neighbour boys
That she had devoted herself to the Devil’s lust [lit: been lustful around the Devil’s party table]
She is only seventeen years and along the road that they walk
She is being pushed like cattle [lit: an animal] receiving taunting words
She is trying to reach the eyes [lit: glance/gaze] of her beloved
But sees him turn around and leave
And among the ones who are watching
Is the punishment she gets
A proof of their ignorance [that they don’t understand]
Is she playing with wizardry and magic?
Can she awaken the rage of the sky?
Woah, from the light of the flames
Can she walk on water like they said?
Can she fool death with her power?
Woah, in the light of the flames
When the flames rise she prays [a prayer]
of being let of from enduring this nightmare
The one she trusted, he lowered his eyes [gaze]
And she saw how he turned around and left
She is alone and convicted
Despite the beg for mercy
Hence the sentence became to be purified in fire
Is she playing with wizardry and magic?
Can she awaken the rage of the sky?
Woah, from the light of the flames
Can she walk on water like they said?
Can she fool death with her power?
Woah, in the light of the flames
But then at last
All of a sudden the whole village becomes silent
All crying diminishes
Vanishes with the smoke
The smoke that rises to the sky
Has she been playing with wizardry and magic?
Has she now paid with her life?
Woah, in the light of the flames
Has she been playing with wizardry and magic?
Has she awoken the rage of the sky?
Woah, from the light of the flames
Has she walked on water like they said?
Has she fooled death with her pact?
Woah, in the light of the flames

Put aside the horrific proposition of such a woman raising a son or daughter with such a destructive attitude. What we aren’t told is that at least three of the women are Republican Party operatives. One woman, identified as Lourdes Castillo de la Pena worked on Ted Cruz’s campaign and hosted a $1000/plate fundraiser. Another woman has appeared sitting next to Trump at small business forums. re: #161 thecommodore
Dr Blasey Ford was almost raped and feared for her life when this party happened. That is why she remembers it. She doesn’t remember all the details - cannot remember the exact date or the exact house.
In my 2nd year at college we had a japanese professor (unusual for my college in the 1960s) and he invited us to his house for a party. I remember this because it was very unusual for staff members to ask students to their home & I had rarely before this drunk alcohol. I got exceeding ill drinking gin & lemonade. (I got home safely with no threats of violence - quite the opposite).
I don’t know when it was - other than the year, I don’t know where it was, other than the town & I don’t remember who the other students were (it was a strange subject & none of my close friends studied it). I remember it because of the impact on me. I remember the name of the professor.
I doubt any of the other people there would remember me & they probably don’t even remember the party. If they were reminded of it, they would probably agree that the party happened.
I think it quite likely that few of the people at the party with Dr Blasey Ford remember it - but I do believe that Kavenaur and his drunken friend believe that it happened - and they may well remember Dr Blasey Ford.
My regional newspaper has a “guest editorial” from the Grand Island (Nebr.) Independent trashing both Dr. Ford and Sen. Feinstein as playing a partisan eleventh hour “trick” on Kavanaugh.
On top of that, the op-ed claims “well, just because Mitch McConnell held up Merrick Garland for over a year, two wrongs don’t make a right.”
It also goes into the usual “why didn’t she report it then” nonsense.

I think it quite likely that Kavenaugh and his buddy believe it happened but have no memory of it or her — because they were just that drunk, and it was the sort of thing they did routinely enough that one specific instance wouldn’t make any particular impression.

But if it was a boy raped by a priest or a Little League coach, and he waited 30 years to tell anyone — nobody doubts him, because a man would just never make up such a thing. The circumstances of events makes exact recall of past events, particularly ones over a long period of time, always difficult to impossible. For example, if you’re robbed at gunpoint, you’re more likely to remember the gun put in your face than you are the face of the robber.
If Prof. Ford said she could remember exact date/time, location, and all the little details of the events, I’d be suspicious on the grounds that such minutiae tends to be lost over the passage of time.

I am going to have to duck out. It is late/early and has been a long day.
Nope. They are not.
One example (with citations) from Wikipedia:
A study done by Michelle Davies and Samantha McCartney discusses why men are often blamed or stigmatized for their rape. They found that heterosexual men were more likely to blame the victim, show less empathy for the victim, deny or diminish the seriousness of the attack, and were more likely to believe rape myths than heterosexual women and homosexual men.[116] One reason for this is the societal pressure placed on men to be strong, tough, and assertive rather than passive, gentle and “feminine” as mentioned earlier.[18][115][116] Another cause for negative reaction toward male rape victims is linked to homophobia. Davies and McCartney and previous research has found a correlation between male victim blame and homophobia, since male rape involving a male rapist is (nonconsensual) sex between two men. The study also revealed that heterosexual men were more likely to be against the victim if the victim was perceived to be homosexual rather than heterosexual.[116] Homosexual men, similar to heterosexual women, were made to feel like they had “asked for it” based on their behavior.
A little handout to read linked below.
Introduction
The rape of adult males has been so largely neglected and collectively denied that its invisibility has given rise to the notion that it just does not occur in our society. While some acknowledgement of male rape in prisons and jails has emerged in recent years, most people do not consider the sexual violation of adult males to be within the realm of possibility in non-institutional communities. When are men are raped, they are usually assaulted by other men.
Although it is possible for women to rape men, this crime has been documented and researched to an even lesser extent than same-sex rape.
The vast majority of male rapes are never reported, and although men constitute 5 to 10 percent of all victims who were raped as adults, they tend to report their assaults to authorities even less than women who have been raped (Scarce 1997). One study involving more than 3,000 adults in the Los Angeles area found that 7% of males in their sample had been raped in their adult lives (Sorenson et al. 1987). In one study on college students, researchers found that 16% of male respondents had been forced to have sex at some point in their adult lives (Struckman and Johnson 1992).
Very little research has been conducted on the rape of men, and service providers like rape crisis centers and hospitals often lack the in-depth knowledge and skill to adequately assist male survivors of sexual violence. Survivors often struggle alone, dealing with their trauma in isolation. More often than not, they are silenced by the fear that loved ones and service providers will fail to support them in their time of crisis.

I am actually kind of concerned by how the GOP isn’t panicking about the midterm elections. Even though they are facing losing one of the houses of Congress, which would allow Democrats to start investigating Trumps crimes independently of the FBI, they don’t seem to be that concerned.
It’s almost as if they are expecting massive electoral fraud/tampering, and are hoping that they would have five republicans on the supreme court to be able to prevent any challenge to the election results.

Think of the idiot Democrat who just lost a special election here in Texas in a district that hadn’t elected a Republican in over 100 years. He didn’t run ads or GOTV, and, unless Democrats pick up some state House seats this fall, has given the GOP a supermajority in the House. He thought he could win just being the Democrat.
(Recycling someone else’s idea to sound smart)
Both Senator Grassley and Mitch McConnel are bluffing on allowing Dr Ford to testify in public.
Both Grassley and Mitch McConnell know that Kavanaugh won’t survive Dr Ford’s and Kavanaugh’s own testimony on the subject of sexual assault. So their only path to winning is to make Dr Ford not testify.
They’ve both come out with really strong confident statements saying that “sure, we’ll let Dr Ford testify and then get him on the supreme court anyway” in the hope that if Dr Ford thinks her testimony won’t change anything, then there would be no point putting herself through the horrible publicity of actually testifying.
Unless Dr Ford withdraws and doesn’t appear before the committee, and assuming Kavanaugh himself is too bone-headed to with draw his nomination before then, Senator Grassley is going to have a sudden change of heart the morning of Dr Ford’s testimony and suddenly realise that “he doesn’t want to subject Dr Ford to any embarrassment” and so for her good, he’s going to withdraw/block Kavanaugh from being considered.

The Americans who support Trump and Kavenaugh are poujadistes. This is hardly unique to the United States.
I’m an American living in western Europe: there are more “recent” immigrants in western Europe than Americans usually think, but nowhere near the percentage of ethnic minorities in the US. When the percentages reach similar levels in Europe, unless we have a real change in our understanding of and approach to bigotry and nationalism, the reactions in Europe will be worse than in the US.

Right, I think Kavanaugh was going to be a finalist on any SCOTUS shortlist for a Republican President. But I think Trump definitely got the short of it from his advisers that Kavanaugh is a strong believer in protecting the executive and that probably is what sold him in the end. I hate Bannon, but I have to admit his strategy was correct. He could see Trump could win, taking the Trumpian attitude of “damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!” As Woodward describes it, every RNC operative, including Chris Christie and Rinsed Pubis, were convinced Trump was going to tank in the GE. If Woodward discusses the Russian tampering of the election, I am not up to that point yet, but he does describe the intelligence agencies’ briefing of Trump regarding their joint intel. I don’t think this is good news. China already has a debt problem from the runaway real estate boom.
China floods debt market with new bond to boost infrastructurehttps://t.co/2hC2XjrYCn
— Alfons López Tena #FBPE (@alfonslopeztena) September 23, 2018
From the cited Financial Times article:
“When these bonds are getting promoted, they mostly get apportioned to banks, which have no choice but to buy them. Non-bank investors prefer other bonds with higher yields and better liquidity,” said a Shanghai-based bond analyst at a mid-sized Chinese investment bank.
He added that local governments often reward banks willing to buy local-government bonds by placing deposits at that bank.
Global watchdogs and China’s finance ministry have warned that rising local-government debt poses risks to the financial system. Such debt totalled 51 per cent of GDP at the end of 2017, according to the IMF’s broadest definition.

I must confess I have been stuck at the beginning because reading about the election remains a too painful experience that I never want to relive. But I plan to soldier on.
re: #255 wheat-dogg
So far, Fear describes a Trump who is not evil or actively colluding with the Russians, but is very simple-minded and easy to control.
Color me skeptical. He knows his money is from Russia and he knows he has been laundering money from the Russian mob for years. In NY real estate, he has been working with criminals his entire life. He doesn’t CARE — the American public was foolish enough or corrupt enough to elect him president and he has no reason to believe that he will face any consequences for his actions. He’s escaped punishment for his entire life.
He’s easy to control??? What about the entire Republican party?

I’m almost through it. What Fear makes very very clear is the flat out cognizant dissonance. Trump rails at the WTO, get told we win 87% of the cases brought, and he just denies it. Acts like it’s where we never win. Goes on the attack against things that HELP US.

The histories written about this administration will not be kind. I predict that even the GOP, if it still exists in some form, will repudiate Trump much as it has W Bush.

Lust for power makes some people very easy to control, if the one(s) doing the controlling is promising access and help to gain that power.
Even if Trump is such a dumbass that he had no idea of the Russian help that was going in the background, helped along by his campaign without his knowledge, it was still Trump’s campaign.
You should know. You are responsible for everything done in your name. Sorry if you are that dense and out of control…bucks stop there on your desk name plate.
And if you can’t control a campaign you sure as hell are not fit for the office of president.

A friend had been texting me about his progress through the book, which he just finished. He described the experience as “laughing and despising” all the way through. So I am going to bite the bullet and get through the nightmare beginning.
The day of the election, I was truly afraid and pessimistic about the outcome. And except for occasional bits of good news — the Virginia election, Doug Jones, and Conor Lamb — the future of this country remains very uncertain and somewhat bleak.

Something Unexpected and Weird Is Happening Beneath California’s Deadliest Faults
The findings of this study demonstrate that small earthquakes that occur adjacent to and between faults can have very different style of deformation than the large ground rupturing earthquakes produced along active faults. This means that scientists should not use the information recorded by these small earthquakes in the San Bernardino basin to predict loading of the nearby San Andreas and San Jacinto faults.

Your comment reminded me of something I heard earlier on the local Columbus NBC politics show.
Former, and much-loved, Democratic mayor of Columbus Mike Coleman is working on a concept of building a “radical middle” movement that hopefully gets people back into a working agreement thinking instead of us and them. Here is an opinion piece he wrote for The Columbus Dispatch.
I admire him for at least trying.
And if anyone remembers earlier there was mention of Columbus billionaire and Republican backer Les Wexner no longer identifying as a Republican. The linked article mentions him and how his thinking leads to what Colemen would like to see happen.
The Columbus Dispatch - Column: Return to civility may depend on the Radical Middle
A bit of the meat of the article:
Les Wexner, founder and chairman of L Brands, is a lifelong Republican who, like most business leaders, is not prone to talking publicly about political issues.
But last August the violence of white supremacists in Charlottesville resulted in the death of an anti-racist protester. President Trump, instead of denouncing the hate groups, gave them a pass. He blamed “both sides” for the tragedy.
After a couple of sleepless nights, Wexner could not remain silent.
“As the leader of an enterprise, as an individual, as a citizen, I will not tolerate this,” Wexner said last August in a widely shared speech to nearly 700 of his employees.
“The question is, what do I do? I’m going to speak out.”
That day, Wexner joined the new Radical Middle.
“Radical Middle” might sound like an oxymoron — except that middle ground is a space that remains largely unclaimed today.
Liberals and conservatives rarely talk to one another anymore. They get their news from different sources, tailored to their respective ideologies. They communicate with likeminded individuals on social media, creating impenetrable echo chambers. The only thing they seem to have in common with those of opposing philosophies is intolerance for each other’s viewpoints.
The New Normal is a nation where degradation, insults, lies and unethical, immoral behavior are accepted and expected. Too many public people behave as if basic human decency is outmoded and no longer has a place in today’s national conversation.
And the political middle? More than ever, it is equated with equivocation, inaction and wimpiness.
Those among the political extremes, despite their collective volume, represent a small minority of Americans. And yet they dominate our political conversations — and, consequently, our government.
Richard Nixon once used the term “silent majority” to describe those who were offended by the 1960s counterculture. Members of today’s silent majority are appalled by the degradation of our political discourse and yearn for basic values of democracy.
The silent majority must become the Radical Middle and demand decency, respect, integrity, honesty, morality, truth and ethical behavior, despite our different political stripes. These values must be pursued with fervor and purpose.

re: #235 Danack
Idea taken from: dailykos.com
I don’t think they can block her from testifying now but I agree that there was a stratagem of saying they wanted to hear from her while being also negotiating in bad faith in an attempt to stack the deck against her accepting their “offer.” Now that she’s called their bluff I think their only out is to hope that Kavanaugh withdraws his nomination, which I don’t see happening either because he, his Federalist Society backers and Trump all want this too badly. From their perspective a real threat exists that nobody can get confirmed after the November elections so they’re doing everything in their power to jam him through come hell or high water.

Just getting it together this morning after a late night out last night. Long-ish post behind the button..
Paul Simon’s farewell concert was an amazing event. Flushing Meadows Corona Park was transformed into a huge concert venue for the evening, and I’d easily estimate the crowd at at least 50,000 people. Paul and his band were firing on all cylinders, and the set was a parade of his hits, both solo and with that Artie fella (he didn’t show, I heard he was appearing somewhere in the Midwest last night). The only ‘guest’ who made it to the stage was Paul’s wife Edie Brickell, who came out for the whistling part in ‘Me & Julio.’ Jimmy Fallon and Lorne Michaels showed up backstage, and I got within yelling distance of Mayor DiBlasio. He’s a tall dude. But I digress…
The show was very emotional for everyone, being the last of a 50 date tour and the capper on a long and distinguished career. Paul told some pretty funny stories throughout the set about his high school and growing up in Queens, reminiscences about band members who had passed on, and a short game of catch with people in the crowd at the top of the set (he bought a new ball glove and wanted to try it out).
The best part of the show for me was his short comment before he played ‘American Tune:’
‘Weird times, huh?’
Crowd cheers
‘Don’t. Give. Up.’
Crowd cheers even louder.
And after nearly 2 hours of hits, 2 encores and lots of terrific musicianship, the band left the stage and Paul did a solo turn on the song that introduced us all to him in the first place, ‘Sounds of Silence.’ He was in tears when he left the stage, and there was nary a dry eye in the house.
We got to attend the after party, held in the Hall of Science on the old World’s Fair grounds. A fun, low-key affair. Had a couple beers, ate some finger food, talked at length with Paul’s guitarist about dopey stuff like his guitars, and had a lot of fun playing with the interactive exhibit projected onto the walls of the hall. We left the party as it was winding down at about 1AM and drove on home.
Ipsos - I’m sorry we didn’t get to meet up! The General Admission and VIP areas were more segregated and harder to get around than I thought they would be.

No, its a lifetime app’t as well. If he doesn’t resign, there aren’t 67 votes in the Senate to impeach him, and he isn’t going to be indicted on a 37 year old accusation.
3 counts of perjury from his SCOTUS hearing… the stolen e-mails, his involvement with Pickering and Pryor noms, and the bullshit evasions on financial questions (baseball tickets. sure. okay.) — either somebody paid off his debts, or his gambling had a few good weeks at convenient times.
Those accusations are not 37 years old.

re: #299 Patricia Kayden
What the hell is wrong with Corbyn? Sounds like he’s mimicking Trump’s “war on the media” nonsense. Not good.
It’s what’s always been wrong with dear Jezza. He is a 1970s era Trotskyite, gadfly rebel backbencher who ended up leader of the Labour party through a series of semi-coincidences that made it easy for a bunch of committed but lazy outsiders to take over the membership. Hasn’t had one new thought since about 1979. Doesn’t like the EU much, since they’re a nasty bunch of neoliberal drones who would fuck up the Great British Socialist Revolution. Also, because the USSR didn’t like them, and no, I’m not kidding about this.
Once there, he did the normal thing that rebels do if they achieve power, which is to crush all dissent within the party and ignore the actual opponent. (Rebels don’t generally hate the power structure, they just hate where they are in it.) This has not gone over well, and there’s been one attempted leadership coup (the Chicken Coup) plus all sorts of leadership versus elected MP fuckery. Jezza has always come down as the voice of the Party membership against the nasty unfaithful elected Labour representatives, which, um, ok.
So anyway, it’s party conference time. Jezz has been completely waffly on Brexit, declaring that it is just a distraction from the fight against inequality and the struggle of the working class and all that good stuff. However, the membership has been increasingly and now overwhelmingly for a second referendum, like 90%/10% or something, and forced Jezz’s hand towards calling for Labour rejecting the Brexit deal. Actual labour unions have been consistently against Brexit, but Jezz and his buddies support Labour and the People, not necessarily labour and the people, so Jezz kind of ignored this.
So this doesn’t make him look too good in the papers, and Jezz is not very happy about it, looks like. The red top right wing rags are as bad as Fox News, but he’s not just talking about them. So, we must apparently force the media to make him look good. The similarities to US politics are an exercise for the reader.

If I had to run 30 feet I’d be dead. I’m lucky to be able to do grocery shopping now, my knees are that fucked up.
Took the big cat (Pepper) out front for a stroll in the grass. I started to bring her in but nooooo. So I took a minute and grabbed this.
After a moment the Manx cat (stays inside too critter aggressive) starts to meow out a window sounding scared. Pepper jumps up and heads for the door to get back in. Because her fur sister was scared. When I let her in she got a huge greeting from Manx cat. Talk about genuine affection.

A former Trump campaign spokesperson was accused of slipping an abortion pill into his pregnant girlfriend’s smoothie — sending her to the hospital and nearly causing her to go into a coma, according to court documents.
Jason Miller — who served on President Trump’s 2016 campaign and transition team — announced he was quitting his role as CNN political commentator Saturday to “focus on clearing [his] name” and fighting the accusations detailed in recent court documents.
The explosive court filings, first reported by Splinter News, allege that prior to Miller’s high-profile extramarital relationship with A.J. Delgado — another Trump campaign staffer — he had an affair with an unnamed woman he met at Rachel’s Gentleman’s Club, an Orlando strip club.
When the dancer found out she was pregnant, Miller allegedly dosed her drink with an abortion pill, without her knowledge, according to the court documents.
The pill caused the woman to wind up in the emergency room “bleeding heavily and nearly went into a coma,” the documents state. She was hospitalized for two days with “the abortion pill possibly reacting with potential street drugs in her system” at the time she drank the smoothie, according to the documents.

There is some deep physiology with this stuff. In HS I ran cross country, did okay, not great. Tried out for track, did not really have competitive foot speed. But could train all day. From my twenties on did martial arts of one kind or another. I can’t go distance but three minute rounds were something I could bounce back from in one minute, go another. Now obviously the man in front of me might prevail and run me out or down. Something about the off on cycle I can deal with. Even now it shows but with much more humble late fifties limits. No more hard sparring.

Nope. My first thought was “take heart, Incels, there’s Jason Miller….”

She was hospitalized for two days with “the abortion pill possibly reacting with potential street drugs in her system” at the time she drank the smoothie, according to the documents.
Considering the pill could cause these kinds of complications (especially for someone unaware they’d taken it), I wonder why the writer felt it responsible to throw “street drugs” into the sentence.

He looks like a thumb that someone drew a face on with a Sharpie.
I mean, I’m no prize, but damn. I guess power really is the ultimate aphrodisiac if women are trying to get with that dude.
It wasn’t stealth drug assaulter Jason Miller’s fault, it was the Street Drugs.

Especially when the odds are that Miller purposefully gave her an overdose since it was his intention to terminate her pregnancy.
re: #312 goddamnedfrank
I don’t think they can block her from testifying now but I agree that there was a stratagem of saying they wanted to hear from her while being also negotiating in bad faith in an attempt to stack the deck against her accepting their “offer.” Now that she’s called their bluff I think their only out is to hope that Kavanaugh withdraws his nomination, which I don’t see happening either because he, his Federalist Society backers and Trump all want this too badly. From their perspective a real threat exists that nobody can get confirmed after the November elections so they’re doing everything in their power to jam him through come hell or high water.
Add in the polls for Kavanaugh go further down by the minute and Susan Collins saying there are now 7 unsure Republicans (take that for what it’s worth), the media snooping around everywhere and the American public now more aware of the whole show than one week ago and the Republicans have their work cut out for them.
Mitch has got to be wondering how this is going to turn even if publicly he is acting so sure of it all.
Kind of reminds me of Rudy saying the Mueller thing was just about over how many times and how long ago now?
re: #330 Patricia Kayden
Can Corbyn be replaced before the next election is called? Is there much of an appetite for that in the Labour rank and file?
It feels as if Labour has had a spate of horrible leaders going back to Tony Blair who wholeheartedly supported the unnecessary Iraq war.
Yes, but he’s likely to win again, with the current composition of Labour members (i.e. lots of hard lefties who signed up to vote for Corbyn, but don’t have any other attachment to the party). Jezz lost a vote of non-confidence by the Labour MPs quite badly, but didn’t step down because the rules didn’t say he had to. The guy who wrote the rules thought any leader would step down at that point and never thought it would have to be mandated. The whole leadership election would take maybe six months, anyway.
So the whole system is paralyzed by shitty leadership in both Labour and Tories, who are pretty much the worst people you’d want for the jobs in a crisis, but there they are. The real political hope out of all of this is, sort of ironically, the House of Lords, who haven’t been shy about calling all of this Brexit bullshit what it is, and could stop this thing once Britain is really staring into the void. Still, I’m not travelling to the UK in April 2019.

And at least AFAICT, it’s becoming increasing obvious that the Republicans who are backing Brett Kavanaugh had buckets of slime already primed to toss even before Christine Ford’s name became public, AND: knew where they were going to toss them.
And anyway, just as an aside: I’ll disagree with the take that Judge Kavanaugh - if he isn’t confirmed to the SC, by whatever circumstances - “can just go back to the District Court” or wherever without some damage to his rep. Oh, he’ll still have the job, but I think he’s probably going to be tarred as “Judge Rapey McRapeface” for the rest of his career.

How Trump Is Repelling Foreign Investment
This year, net inward investment into the United States by multinational corporations—both foreign and American—has fallen almost to zero, an early indicator of the damage being done by the Trump administration’s trade conflicts and its arbitrary bullying of companies and governments. This shift of corporate investment away from the United States will decrease long-term U.S. income growth, reduce the number of well-paid jobs available, and reinforce the ongoing shift of global commerce away from United States.

On this note, see this excellent 16-tweet thread on the GOPer perversion of the presumption of innocence:
It is embarrassing to Lindsay Graham that he graduated law school without ever comprehending the presumption of innocence. Here’s a quick refresher for him. 1/
— Heidi Li Feldman (@HeidiLiFeldman) September 23, 2018
To help guard against that, a criminal trial operates on a presumption of innocence. Nobody can be deprived of their liberty unless the government overcomes the presumption with proof beyond a reasonable doubt. 5/

Even when the job is with the government, the prosecutorial powers of the state are not arrayed against the applicant. 9/
— Heidi Li Feldman (@HeidiLiFeldman) September 23, 2018
I doubt that when Lindsey Graham has to decide to who to hire or promote on his own staff that he ever employs anything like the presumption of innocence. 11/
— Heidi Li Feldman (@HeidiLiFeldman) September 23, 2018
Conclusion:
Bandying about the presumption of innocence risks cheapening its value, eroding its force in the settings where it serves the purposes of justice. 16/16

But I’m looking back at how this week developed, and where we are today as opposed to last Sunday. Kavanaugh’s confirmation was considered pretty much a lead-pipe cinch last weekend, even as the Ford story first hit the news.
Inside a week, the confirmation is a more open question than ever, Ed Whelan got exposed and vilified for one of the most dishonest defenses ever, and the PR firm responsible for lots of dirty shit was dragged out into the sunlight. One of their executives resigned due to his sexual misconduct, and Republicans are now pretty much damned whether they confirm Kavanaugh or not.
Gotta hand it to Senate Dems. They grabbed the narrative and turned what might have been a rote confirmation into a street fight, which they’ve so far fought to a draw.

Once the GOP gets it’s super majority on Nov 6th. It’s time to repeal the 17th Amendment. Then the Dems will be truly Done. The States legislative bodies will send their representative to the Senate. Look at the voting maps people. Its all Red. The rural people will finally have a voice.
We got Trump for President and he thinks rural GOP voters DON’T have a voice? I will never understand how people can think this way.
IOW confirmation into the highest court in the land comes with presumptions? How about the presumption Garland got? No one can make a good case for treating Kav any better. Then we have the Dr Ford matter. How stark can the hypocrisy really get? Maybe I should withdraw that last.

Just giving you guys advance notice that I’m probably going to lose my shit for a little while if Kavanagh gets confirmed.
You won’t be alone
Last poll half the country doesn’t want him
re: #387 makeitstop
As we all probably will.
Could any of us have foreseen this nomination not sailing through a Republican-controlled Congress? Not to sound all cliche or anything, but this is why we fight.
In this case there was an important truth out there…

Seventeener nonsense pops up out of the RW cesspool with regularity. Supposedly, the “rationale” is that since State Legislatures in “real America” are more “representative” (i.e. controlled by dedicated wingnuts) letting said Leges chose Senators will guarantee a permanent supply of Dedicated Wingnut Senators: a permanent majority, of course, since there are presumed to be more “red” states than “blue” ones, populations notwithstanding.
Ideology uber alles, of course: and yet another indication of how RWNJs really view democracy - the Voice Of The People always must be heard and hearkened to: as long as the message is the “correct” one…

Which is why I always get pissed when I hear any Republican talk about there being a lack of bipartisanship in our government.
What they really mean is Democrats have to agree with the Republicans.
And a lot of that thinking grew out of Reaganism.
I will never forget when a whole side of our politics was reduced to a single letter “L.”
