This presser is supposed to be about China?

My guess is that China will get a brief mention, buried somewhere in all the whining.

Cl’d

I just got back from my 2 mile walk. Went to City MD to get the test for Covid-19 antibodies. If it comes back negative something is wrong (with the test or my brain). It’s 80 degrees in Brooklyn, so I’m more than a little tired, maybe talk a nap, but I’m alive.

get the results back in about two days.

and fuck you trump

‘The Specific Ocean?’

Ohhhhhh-kay…

I give Trump a pass on such verbal mistakes, especially those that arise when reading a teleprompter when you haven’t practiced a speech. We all make these types of errors when speaking — and, when not reading prepared text, even say the opposite of what we intended, without realizing it, especially when speaking extemporaneously. The problems aren’t that he’s overweight, has a terrible diet, mispronounces words, is physically unfit, and not particularly knowledgeable — the problems are that he is cruel, a vicious bully, unwilling to defer to experts, has no empathy, and has no loyalty to our nation or to his oath of office.

Leaving for my walk, so I’ll drop this and run. A month or so ago (seems like years) UCSF was testing everyone who had covid-19 symptoms (for the virus, not for antibodies), and 95% were negative. And this was with medical professionals doing the screening. So maybe don’t be too, too surprised, if you come back negative.

I won’t sit here and even attempt to argue that the US is some paragon of virtue. But, generally speaking, we haven’t been complete fucking flakes when it comes to our friends and allies, or agreements that we enter into. This nihilist piece of shit has completely undone all of that.

Given past incidents like this, I imagine his defense at trial is gonna be that the video doesn’t show how Floyd was a “scary black man” with berserker strength and nigh invulnerability. He’ll just say some variation of “I felt he was a danger to me/others” and the jury will be instructed that so long as that “feeling” existed, the law says it’s “self-defense” and any actions taken totally legal because he’s a cop.

IANAL — but could it be related to the definition of homicide in that jurisdiction? In any case, as more information is uncovered, they could upgrade the charges. Let’s see what happens. Of course, in the Trump era, even the worst actions are immediately forgotten because they are so quickly replaced by some new scandal or crime or threat to liberty.

When, again, are all those Obama era officials being rounded up and put in orange jump suits? And is Twitter being silenced now? What’s going on with Flynn anyway? … How many outrages can we focus on at once?

IANAL — but could it be related to the definition of homicide in that jurisdiction? In any case, as more information is uncovered, they could upgrade the charges. Let’s see what happens. Of course, in the Trump era, even the worst actions are immediately forgotten because they are so quickly replaced by some new scandal or crime or threat to liberty.

When, again, are all those Obama era officials being rounded up and put in orange jump suits? And is Twitter being silenced now? What’s going on with Flynn anyway? … How many outrages can we focus on at once?

Ah but my family insists that Q (John F Kennedy Jr.) is going to resurface any moment now with the Mole Children on OANN and all those adrenochrome drinking satan worshipping Democrats will be arrested!

And I realize Dallas is not the rest of the country, but they have convicted the last two cops put on trial for killing someone.

That’s why yesterday’s presser by the County Attorney was such a fucking disaster, because even if they wanted to say “We need time to investigate,” hanging out there the idea that the four may walk without even a slap on the wrist was adding fuel to a lit flame.

Yes!

Contrast the County Attorney’s ‘business as usual’ approach versus the Governor and Mayor’s efforts to de-escalate and reform.

It seems to me that there is a ‘debate’ (conducted in numerous ways) over the heart and mind of the Minnesota legal system. And there seems to be some hope that it will turn out with some improvements. I just hope that cost in lives is no higher.

There also seems to something a learning curve happening in the city and state police forces.

I would hate to be the incident commander who made the very poor decision to arrest a peaceable news crew. While they were broadcasting, no less. Or the personally and professionally embarrassed pr person who put out those lies.

Oh, I didn’t comment on it earlier, but today marks the first day of VA’s mandatory mask order. So when I stopped at Wawa to fuel up, you can imagine my total lack of surprise that every person I saw was without a mask. The sentiment that seemed to be on display was clear: “It’s over, let’s move on.”

Meanwhile, my manager at work informed me that not only are we to be masked at all times, but we’re also supposed to be barring anyone entry from the hotel if they don’t have a mask on. Easier said than done considering we’ve multiple entrances into the buildings, any of which an unmasked guest can enter without our being aware. All it really means is I’m going to get a lot of arguing and angry stares this weekend as I try to patiently explain the new hotel policy to assholes who think they don’t need a mask because “I’M NOT SICK!”

That was pretty much the unofficial policy for the past few weeks, even though I was informed Tuesday that corporate made masks a mandatory part of the uniform weeks back. Management had just been dragging its feet as it tried to figure out how to implement such without a revolt. But now that it’s an order from the state gov’t, corporate is puts its foot down and requiring masks at all times.

Apparently it isn’t that easy to just leave. The US has to give one year notice (pretty common for international organizations) AND pay up the dues in arrears, which in this case is a cool $100 million. So, the US government would finally need to cough up the desperately needed money it owes the WHO to start the clock running, which the Biden administration would immediately stop.

la.eater.com

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has officially paved the way for restaurants to fully reopen in Los Angeles County, announcing today that his office has approved a request by LA County officials to reopen dining rooms. The announcement, first reported by Eater yesterday evening, comes more than two-and-a-half months after restaurants were ordered to close their dining rooms, first by city mayor Eric Garcetti and later on by Gov. Newsom.

The LA Times confirmed the news this morning that Newsom had granted a variance from the county to reopen restaurants for dining in, as well as the structured reopening of barbershops and hair salons. The variance is the formal request put forward by county officials that states that the region has met certain criteria for reopening in a safe and measured way. Los Angeles County officials submitted its plans on Wednesday, showing that the county was meeting a variety of benchmarks in slowing the spread of the novel coronavirus, and received approval after back and forth discussion between mayor Eric Garcetti, Gov. Newsom, and county officials throughout last night.

The approval of the variance that allows the county to reopen hair salons, barbershops, and restaurants hinged in a variety of criteria set forth by the California Department of Public Health, including a low infection rate (LA sits at 6.5 percent currently, below the 8 percent threshold) and a seven-day reduction in the total number of patients hospitalized for COVID-19. However, overall numbers are still grim for the largest county in the largest state in America, as Los Angeles County reported nearly 50 more coronavirus deaths overnight.

Specifics, such physical distancing between tables, health and safety guidelines for workers and diners, and an official reopening timeline, have not been released yet. It is likely that LA restaurants will be able to open their dining rooms as soon as tomorrow, based on sources Eater has spoken with, and the speed at which Orange and Ventura counties allowed dining rooms to reopen. Governor Newsom is scheduled to give a press conference at noon, followed by a county press conference at 1 p.m., and a statement from mayor Garcetti thereafter. More on this story as it comes.

The one thing I’ve not been able to figure out with Trump on foreign policy is whether his ceding power to China is intentional or simply a byproduct of his incompetence. I mean, if you wanted to give China more power on the world stage, isn’t this basically the way you’d do it while promoting a psuedo-isolationist foreign policy? Then again, he clearly has no understanding of the dynamics at play within the international system, so it could just be total incompetence.

I think it’s total incompetence. He wants to be dictator of America, mainly so he can stuff his bank account and pay off his debts. Being responsible to the rest of the world is way too complicated since he can’t even be responsible to the citizens of his own country.

I think it’s total incompetence. He wants to be dictator of America, mainly so he can stuff his bank account and pay off his debts. Being responsible to the rest of the world is way too complicated since he can’t even be responsible to the citizens of his own country.

The strong strain of American exceptionalism in the right wing kinda demands that the USA is the top of class in everything; anything that erodes are standing argues against the exceptionalism.

So…incompetence.

READ: Transcripts From Flynn Calls With Russian Officials Released

The transcripts from several phone calls between Michael Flynn and Russian officials became public Friday, including his Dec. 2016 call with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak discussing sanctions the Obama administration imposed on Russia.

The transcripts show Kisylak trying to suss out from Flynn what the incoming Trump administration’s policy towards Russia would be, as Flynn tried to ensure that Moscow took a “reciprocal” response to sanctions issued by the Obama administration as a response to Russian meddling in the 2016 election in support of Trump.

Anyway, we’ll be back in January, arrears of our dues in hand.

I am still awaiting word. Gov. Sisolak is prepared to reopen Casinos on 4 June depending on how the numbers look. The only problem is that the Casino I work at is next to the Idaho border and Twin Falls County is currently one of the biggest hot spots in the State. I worry about the CoVidiots ignoring PPE/social distanceing requirements and management letting them get away with it. We’ll see I guess.

Like I said above, they’re gonna bring in the Medical Examiner and get them to testify that they saw no evidence that Floyd was subjected to strangulation or asphyxiation. Then follow up by getting them to totally muddy the water by saying that he could have croaked from his underlying conditions. After that, all it will take is one asshole on the jury saying that he thinks the ME was right and it was just “bad luck” that Floyd happened to die while being restrained and the whole thing ends in a mistrial.

You know what really makes me furious about all this?

There’s going to be another one. I don’t know when and I don’t know where, but it will happen.

Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Breona Taylor, George Floyd.

There’s ALWAYS another one.

And until that changes we haven’t accomplished what we need to.

There was. Tallahasse Fl. Wednesday May 27th.

On Wednesday (May 27), Tony McDade was shot and killed by a white police officer in Tallahassee, north Florida.

Multiple reports by local news and on social media said that McDade was unarmed and had not been warned before the officer began shooting. This has been disputed by the police, who said that McDade was armed with a gun and “made a move consistent with using the firearm against the officer”. (Uh huh. Typical excuse)

Asked by reporters at the briefing, Revell said he did not know whether body-camera footage of the incident was taken, and he also did not know how many shots were fired.

Odds are if he was wearing a body cam, it somehow got turned off or was never turned on in the first place.

They can and they very likely will. But between then and now, the court of public opinion only has one autopsy report in hand (so to speak). And that report says “no strangulation/asphyxiation,” which his defenders are gonna spend coming days screaming out every time that video is played.

I mean, George’s dying words were that he couldn’t breathe. I assume that pressure in that area could have caused restricted breathing and loss of blood flow, and one or the other killed him.

The other important thing I want to note is that the ME was very clear that the cop stayed on him even after he became non-responsive. That’s evidence that what he was doing was excessive and maybe even intentional.

Thanks—that’s kind of what I got from the other articles, but this one is so poorly written, I wasn’t sure.

23 Mick Jones Nicked My Pudding
Someone’s always out to piss on your parade
Someone’s always ruining your day
You gotta beware, there’s strange ducks out there
I’m telling you, it’s all I gotta say
Yeah, never mind singing about police on your back
You’re a shady geezer looking for a snack
You might think someone’s cool, till they play you like a fool
Put the spoon down or you’ll get a smack
Oi! Mick Jones nicked my pudding, then I said
Oi! Mick Jones leave my pudding alone
Life ain’t always fair when your hero breaks your heart
I was really in denial from the start
I owned all his records, he didn’t even care
The least he could’ve done was share
Resentment it’s a killer, that’s all you gotta know
To forgive a living legend is the only way to go
But he really wasn’t sorry, I may have seen him laugh
As he ate the tasty treat on my behalf
Oi! Mick Jones nicked my pudding, then I said
Oi! Mick Jones leave my pudding alone

So worldometer reports -1,915 deaths for Spain on May 25th. Wonder how reliable their other figures are? Its count of total cases in Spain has long been suspicious — 27,000 more than John Hopkins, but John Hopkins probably requires a more substantial level of confirmation than worldometer.

Worldometer acknowledes issues with spanish data.

Spain
There are many issues with Spanish data, including a number of historical downward adjustments that have not been documented through revised reports (which still show the original - higher - numbers being reported), nor explained.

re: #240 BeachDem

Either I’m really tired or something, but I’m having a hard time understanding what this is supposed to say:

The suspect claimed he had her father, Democratic state Senator Vernon Sykes, captive. He told her not to contact the police.

OK—that seems clear

Emilia Sykes hung up the phone and called the number belonging to her father. He then answered the phone.

Who is the “he” in this one? Her father or the suspect?

The report states Vernon Sykes had received a call 17 minutes before the suspect called Emilia Sykes, and that call was disconnected.

Who was that call from? Are we to assume it was the suspect? Did the guy actually kidnap her father? How did he get the father’s phone? I am so confused.

None of the other articles (from the Dispatch or the Plain Dealer) have these details—just that she got a threatening call on her phone.

I notice that more and more lately. Pronouns that are placed poorly without clarification, no resolution, just word vomit that barely explains the WTF is going on.

There was a weird Florida Man story I read last week that was exactly that. I read it and was none the more informed.

The cop would have cut off blood flow through the carotid artery, not asphyxiation, IMHO.

A friend’s daughter and son in law are officers at a prison. They both are betting on this. They said that you can kneel on a suspect until you get the cuffs on, and then you get off. They are both RWNJ as far as I can see, but they were both calling foul on this, and calling it murder.

The measure of how this is all about a bigoted distinction isn’t just the George Floyd protests versus the armed “Open the Country” protests, but the former versus the Malheur Bird Refuge takeover.

What does “peaceful” mean when these assholes use it as the hinge for critique? What does “respect for property” mean? What constitutes legitimate resistance to tyranny, what constitutes a form of “freedom” that merits the threat of violence?

Those aren’t rhetorical questions: try and figure out what the fuck these concepts mean, when a conservative or reactionary, within their full cultural context, applies them in the process of excusing…or lauding…one kind of behavior but condemning another. What are the contextual factors that makes them make a distinction?

Because the only answer I can come to is a belief that there’s an in-group of inherently superior individuals that are permitted to dictate the rules of society but permit themselves exception to those rules. The many and ever-shifting categories of inferiors, by contrast, cannot question rules, violate rules, or challenge the arbitrary allowance of exceptions.

If This Means Democrats Are Finally Getting It on the Courts, It’s About Damn Time
A new report from Senate Democrats pulls no punches with regard to the conservative movement’s attempt to make policy through the federal judiciary. Charlie Pierce

You may recall that, back in February, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, Democrat of Rhode Island, declared war on the dark-money-Federalist Society conveyor belt that is bringing us all of this administration’s federal judges while simultaneously taking the law back to 1881. These days, as the butcher’s bill for the pandemic blows through the 100,000-mark, and with the president* throwing buckets of vile deflection all over the Intertoobz, the only thing that the United States Senate actually is doing right now is running that conveyor belt at top speed. Comes now the Democratic Policy and Communications Committee with the latest salvo in this ongoing brawl. It is in every way a partisan document, but, as I was saying to Supreme Court Justice Merrick Garland just the other day, fck the begrudgers anyway.

The same-old right-wing billionaires have launched another disinformation campaign, this time to stop people voting by mail.

First, you plant the federal judiciary thick with your grant-fattened proteges, and then those same proteges rule on your attempts to restrict the franchise. It’s the Circle of White. And it is only the latest demonstration of the wisdom of former Justice Anthony Kennedy, who wrote for the ages:

We now conclude that independent expenditures, including those made by corporations, do not give rise to corruption or the appearance of corruption. … The fact that speakers [i.e., donors] may have influence over or access to elected officials does not mean that these officials are corrupt. … The appearance of influence or access, furthermore, will not cause the electorate to lose faith in our democracy.
