CLed

I’ve always had a feeling, perhaps wishful thinking, that American conservatism would end in a sudden (by historical standards) disaster and collapse, something like the 1920s ku klux klan, which collapsed with amazing speed after a kluxer overlord was convicted of rape and murder in Indiana.
This might be it, with consistent mishandling of the Corona pandemic and racial justice issues, much of it a direct result of half-baked conservative ideology, spiraling out of control and reaching the level of catastrophe by election day. It will bad enough that all the grifter cunning from Pharoah’s wizards to Alex Jones will not be able to conceal it.

I never dreamed their Armageddon would be this bad or this sudden, though, and I could very well not survive it myself. Oh, well, if that happens, please ask your children to remember me in the twenty-second century.

She definitely did seem to be the Midwest’s favorite. I’m still in favor of Harris. I think she’s not only the best choice for the campaign but to govern. I like Bottoms, Demings, Rice, & Lujan- Grisham but I feel Harris has the best overall skill set.

Yes. Young, mixed race, former Cali AG, and holds a decidedly D Senate seat in Cali.

Not the best campaigner, a bit stiff on the stump, but will hand Pence’s ass to him in the debates.

And what a weird surreal day. This whole Gaetz thing is bizarre and creepy. The argument that Bolton’s book should not be released because the lies in it are classified. I think she’s only stiff when the media (who are monochromatic) cover her.

The two times I talked to her—first time I mentioned Emerge (for which she was one of the inspirations) and she got all excited that somebody knew the story. The second time, I was working on a project for some remote California counties and told her that was why I could write her a check—she laughed and said it was fun to talk to somebody who’d even heard of those places.

When she spoke to the crowd, she was extremely engaging, and at the one-on-one meetup times, she really got into it. She was my first choice in the beginning, and it was really nice to meet her and not be disappointed. She’s definitely my first choice for VP.

Much like “FREEZE PEACH!!!” and social media, it is totally lost on wingnuts that privately owned businesses can pick and choose who they serve. If they say “You have to wear a mask” and you can’t give a legitimate reason why you can’t, then they can refuse to let you use their service. They are not required to put up with your bullshit because you think “FREEDOM!!!” means you can do whatever the fuck you want.

Omaha resident physician accused of killing her husband during argument along I-80 (Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

TL;DR, she is a resident physician at University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

She and her husband are in the process of moving to Scottsbluff. On a trip from Scottsbluff to Omaha, they had an argument. Hub pulled over to the side of I-80, she claims he raised his arm to strike her, she grabbed a gun from the centre console of their truck and shot him twice in the chest, killing him.

She is charged with second-degree murder, and is in the Dawson County jail with no bail.

Their two children were in the back seat. They are now wards of the state.

Not entirely: discrimination by race, gender or religion is forbidden, but businesses are free to apply other restrictions.

And that also messes with their minds. I recall that Rand Paul really stepped in it over that aspect of the Civil Rights Act.

Even the arena management agrees on the public health concerns part, they’re worried about their contractual obligations with the Trump campaign (an understandable concern, especially given Trump’s litigious history).

Exactly. Getting an attendee to sign a waiver is no biggie, but what if a third party comes down with COVID-19 as the result of exposure to someone who attended the rally? They sure as hell didn’t sign that waiver. They could turn around and sue the arena and/or the Trump campaign. If I were the plaintiffs, that’s something I’d certainly mention in my argument.

Rep. Matt Gaetz Appears on Fox News With His Newly Revealed Son: ‘Nestor is the Light of My Life’ (WATCH) (Goes to Towleroad)

Florida GOP Congressman Matt Gaetz appeared Thursday night on Fox News with his newly revealed “son,” 19-year-old Nestor Galban.

Both Gaetz and Galban took the opportunity to slam Democratic Congressman Cedric Richmond of Louisiana for a heated exchange during a House Judiciary Committee meeting this week. During a markup of a policing reform bill, Gaetz and Richmond sparred after the Democrat suggested that Republicans don’t know what it’s like to worry about non-white children.

“You’re claiming you have more concern for my family than I do. Who the hell do you think you are?” Gaetz told Richmond during the exchange.

One day later, Gaetz claimed on Twitter that Nestor is his son — even though he has not formally adopted him, and he has previously referred to him in social media posts as a “helper,” a “House page,” and a “local student.”

Here in Czech Republic, when emergency measures required masks at all times in public, there were serious fines for non-compliance. The equivalent of $500 for not wearing a face mask, payable on the spot - the cops would take you to the nearest ATM machine to withdraw the money and pay up and of course, issue you a receipt that you’d paid the fine.

Not one fine had to be issued; all the cops had to do was simply remind people to put on their masks or pay the penalty. While $500 may not sound like much to many Americans, for about half the population here, that’s one-third of monthly wages. Yeah….that’ll hurt.

So go ahead - let them not wear their required face masks. Fine them on the spot and if they refuse to pony up, issue them a fine for $10,000 and/or ten days in the slammer….their choice.

Here in Czech Republic, when emergency measures required masks at all times in public, there were serious fines for non-compliance. They are printed on the backs of physical tickets (if you live in a backwater like I do where you go to an actual travel agent to purchase tickets).

Otherwise, such contracts are available on the Website of the airline, or when you click “I agree” on purchasing passage.

As for third-party sellers like Expedia, I don’t know how they do it.

Jesus. Meanwhile, in the wild north country, Minnesota is still reporting less than 400 new positives per day, an approximately 4% positive rate per new test conducted. Both the absolute number and the percentage have drastically dropped from our highs around ~750 and 15%, while our testing has ramped up from ~5000 to ~10000 in the same time period. Coronavirus was already in Italy by December, waste water study finds (BBC)

Italian scientists say sewage water from two cities contained coronavirus traces in December, long before the country’s first confirmed cases.

The National Institute of Health (ISS) said water from Milan and Turin showed genetic virus traces on 18 December.

It adds to evidence from other countries that the virus may have been circulating much earlier than thought.

Chinese officials confirmed the first cases at the end of December. Italy’s first case was in mid-February.

In May French scientists said tests on samples showed a patient treated for suspected pneumonia near Paris on 27 December actually had the coronavirus.

Meanwhile in Spain a study found virus traces in waste water collected in mid-January in Barcelona, some 40 days before the first local case was discovered.

Well, since they were specifically looking for coronavirus, I imagine it would be lab techs under the direction of epidemiology researchers.

I can’t speak for other countries (or even other towns), but we don’t test wastewater. We only test freshwater at the wellheads and in homes and sampling stations around the village.

Well, they say they detected it in wastewater sampled in Milan and Turin from 18 December, and the first cases erupted in Italy at the end of December (two weeks later).

Since there is a long incubation period before the symptoms from the disease erupt, that might explain the delay.

Spain says they detected the novel coronavirus in wastewater from mid-January in Barcelona about forty days before the first case there, so that may be the same thing (or maybe the first few cases were misdiagnosed as something else unintentionally, or were not sufficiently severe to cause people to go to the doctor).

Just coming over the wires that British actor Ian Holm has died at the age of 88.

Ian Holm, the versatile actor who played everything from androids to hobbits via Harold Pinter and King Lear, has died in London aged 88, his agent confirmed to the Guardian.

“It is with great sadness that the actor Sir Ian Holm CBE passed away this morning at the age of 88,” they said. “He died peacefully in hospital, with his family and carer,” adding that his illness was Parkinson’s related. “Charming, kind and ferociously talented, we will miss him hugely.”

Holm’s final days were documented in a series of pastel portraits by his wife, Sophie de Stempel.

(I find it strange that the UK uses centigrade for temperatures and miles for distances and wind speeds.)

Generally, like most other sensible countries the UK uses metric units and Centigrade/Kelvin. The one big exception is miles for distance measurement. We use SI metres for things like construction, manufacturing etc. with some odd results, like the standard 4 foot by 8 foot panel of sheet wood or plasterboard being listed by suppliers as 1220mm x 2240mm. Saying that, go into a store and ask for a dozen four by eights of 12mm weatherboard and the guy at the shop counter will know what you’re wanting.

Road speed limits are set in British law in miles per hour (30, 60 or 70 depending) hence wind speeds are often reported in mph too. There’s a switch on the BBC’s weather website that allows a change to report wind speeds as kph if required (divide by 3.6 for SI metres per second).

The great British piss artist tradition was always to hit the pub at 5pm and drink seven pints: one per hour, and then one just before 11 pm closing time.

The UK’s motorway network is measured in metres and kilometres, there are marker posts every 100 metres. The speed limit on the motorways is still 70 mph generally with some “smart” motorway speed limits reduced 60 mph, 50 mph or lower if there’s congestion or other problems. The “distance to next exit” sign numbers are also in miles.

A statement from the village of River Forest on June 4 announced that resident Rob Palley has been charged with one count of a hate crime and one count of aggravated battery by the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office after an incident yesterday in the Jewel parking lot.

After an investigation by the River Forest Police Department and prosecutors, the Cook County Felony Review Unit recommended the charges.

“Mr. Palley is alleged to have committed a battery against a female, African-American woman in the parking lot of a Jewel Foods store (7525 W. Lake St.) following a verbal exchange that, according to the victim and witnesses, was racially-motivated,” reads the statement.

Atheists less likely to die from Covid-19 than believers, research finds (The Times of London)

People without religious faith are less likely to die from Covid-19 than believers, according to the first analysis of its kind from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

The highest death rates were among Muslims, with Hindus and Sikhs also seeing more deaths than Christians.

Those increased risks were largely explained by factors including race, sociodemographic characteristics and population density, the ONS said, but an increased risk for Jewish people remained even after they were taken into account.

Separate figures released by the ONS showed that men and women with disabilities were at increased risk of dying from Covid-19 when compared with those without.

People who reported having “no religion” in the 2011 census had the lowest rate of death involving Covid-19.

So, the end of an era in Czech Republic. Next year, public telephone booths will cease to exist. The Czech Telecommunications Office has decided to stop subsidizing then and O2, the fixed-line provider, will no longer operate them. The last of them will be decommissioned by March of 2021.

Guess if Superman ever comes to Prague and his services are needed, he’s just gonna have to find somewhere else for a quick change.

Public toilet? Hope he carries some coinage.

Heh. There are public toilets (not enough of them IMO) but so far, the only unisex one I’ve ever seen here is in a tiny hole-in-the-wall café in Ostrava’s city center.

The domestic majors don’t code share, and the only way he could get on an American-branded flight is via a different regional airline - but since American regional carriers appear to be 100% owned-and-operated by American Airlines Group, I think his days on flying American are over.

Only until when the Pandemic is over… Whenever that might be. That’s what American said.

These have to be very confusing times for wingnuts. 3 years ago, they thought they’d finally succeeded in turning back the culture wars, that they’d put a man in the White House who was going to put a stop to all that “socialist” business and return America to “greatness.” Yet here we are, 3 years hence, and they’re losing ground at an even greater pace.

This is why I try to calm others by pointing out that liberalism is not in a war with conservatism. Liberalism won that war 70 years ago. Even with the judges people are moaning about, there are ways to deal with that. If congress passes robust enough legislation, there’s actually very little the courts can do about it.

Fascinating stuff. Especially seeing the original document.
Though I’m still wondering how/if, in the 2-1/2 years between the effective date of Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation (1/1/1863) and “Juneteenth”, NO slaves in Texas ever got wind of the abolition of slavery?
Or was Granger’s order just intended as a formal confirmation of facts that were already known, I.e. intended as much as a reminder to the (now-former) slaveholders, as to (now) freemen?

I would be happy to return to a normal of going in to ‘the office’ for certain meetings. The in-person non-verbal feedback that I get from face-to-face meetings makes for a more productive me. Beyond that, there is no reason that I need to be anywhere specific, so home is good. I do get something from hallway convrrsations to bounce ideas off others, it’s more convenient than the phone, sort-of.

I’ll confess that I have a hard time getting things done while working from home. I’m used to the kind of distractions that happen in the office setting but at home it’s a completely different distraction set. Also, because I’m retiring in a few weeks, the urge to just check out has been horrible while working from home. It feels like my career is kind of sputtering to a close here alone at home. No in-person goodbyes, no party, just show up on my last day to return my computer and pick up all my personal stuff in my cubicle.

This article, by the author of The Family. The people he is writing about are not ever going to be in the real world, and they are going to be a trouble to our country and our world as long as they live. I have to hope that not all of DT’s base are not like these. In fact, the ones I know are not. These people have enough money to be able to travel the country, attending his “rallies.” Oh, so scary. Not sane. But surely a small percentage of Americans. Surely?

“He’s the Chosen One to Run America”: Inside the Cult of Trump, His Rallies are Church and He is the Gospel, Vanity Fair.

The gospel of Thomas—the doubting one—does not, of course, reside with Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John in your King James. But then, Trump doesn’t read the Bible. He doesn’t need to. Rule books are for losers. Reading is for losers. The gospel of Trump, like that of Thomas—noncanonical, antiestablishment—is gnostic, a form of secret knowledge reserved for the faithful, a “truth” you must have the eyes to see in order to believe.

Gnosticism, which dates at least to the second century A.D., is the path Christianity did not take, its texts destroyed as heretical, its ideas mostly forgotten until the 1945 discovery in Egypt of 13 ancient books in a sealed clay jar. Or maybe not so much forgotten as woven over the centuries into countless conspiracy theories, the deep-seated belief that there exist truths they—there is always a they in gnosticism, from the bishops and bureaucrats of the early church, coastal elites of the ancient world, to the modern media peddling fake news—do not want us, the people, to perceive.

There’s something almost democratic about gnosticism, in its American distortion. “Recognize what is before your eyes,” the gospel of Thomas advises, “and that which is hidden will be revealed.” One needs no diplomas to know truth, no “data” contrived by “experts.” Knowledge lies not in scholarship or information but within, “the gut,” as Trump has long maintained, or “right here,” as he said more recently at one of his coronavirus briefings, tapping his temple to show us “the metric” by which he would know when it was safe for us to go outside, when we could gather again by the thousands to adore him.

Every tweet, every misspelling, every typo, every strange capitalization—especially the capitalizations, says Dave—has meaning. “The truth is right there in what the media think are his mistakes. He doesn’t make mistakes.” The message of the shirt to Dave is: Study the layers. “Trump is known as a five-dimension chess player,” Dave says later. And he’s sending us clues. About the Democrats and Ukraine and his plans. “There are major operations going on,” Dave tells me months later, suggesting that Trump is using COVID-19 field hospitals as “a cover” to rescue children from sex trafficking.

I work for a heeeuuuuge company and there was a completely interesting discussion on a tech management call that I couldn’t go to because I was working (heh heh). Basically, my evil too big to fail employer found that it was saving something like $11,000 a person (!!! didn’t get a breakdown but I assume it includes a lot of building costs!!!) every six months by having people work from home. AND they have learned that productivity has increased. The guy reporting it was the guy who was (prior to the beginning of March) all in on the synergies and getting everyone to work in the office.

I don’t know what this means for the future, but if the numbers hold up, I can’t see us going back to the status quo ante. Things will change because the lure of saving money is just too much. I’ve learned two things in the two decades I’ve worked here: 1) the bank does not hand out samples of the merchandise and 2) if there’s a way to save money, we’re going to do it. Even if it’s dumb, like dumping well-trained people in Country A to save a buck and move over to Country B, we’re going to do it. (That said, Country A is slightly more politically unstable than Country B, which may factor into it.)

He was fired! The union got him his job back and the police chief who fired him was forced out. Then he became head of the police union.

re: #202 Eclectic Cyborg

Trump’s done far more than anyone else. This is true.

He’s done more to destroy our economy, kill Americans, and enrich the millionaires than any other American in our history, let alone any occupant of the WH.

Trump inherited a strong and stable economy with 4.9% unemployment rate and growth of about 2-2.5% a year. Trump’s idiotic trade war slowed the growth and the TCJA enriched billionaires while everyone else saw scraps.

Then covid19 hit, and not only did Trump fail to use the pandemic prevention plan Obama left for him, he did the exact opposite of what health experts said he should do.

The result? Instead of being near zero cases by end of March, we’re at 120,000 dead Americans and an unemployment rate that’s 3 times higher than what he inherited from Obama. The economy is in shambles and the Fed and CBO both warn the economy will take years to fully recover. The National Restaurant Federation warns that 25% of restaurants will never reopen thanks to covid19 - that’s millions of jobs that wont come back.

That’s all on Trump and that’s one fucking record alright.

People are starting to wake up to the realization that an incompetent know nothing who has failed at everything, including his core competency of real estate, should never have been in office. Of course a majority of Americans knew this - it was an archaic EC, foreign interference, and voter suppression that helped the GOP win in 2016. They’ll be at it again in 2020, and Trump’s repeatedly shown a willingness to extort foreign powers to influence the outcome of our elections.

He and the GOP don’t stand a chance if Americans vote. That’s what they’re afraid of. That’s what they want to avoid. That’s why they oppose mail in voting. That’s why they oppose any effort to secure our elections or protect voters from having their votes suppressed. It’s why the GOP seeks to reduce numbers of polling places, make it harder to get ID that they claim is necessary to prove ID to vote, and wanted FL felons to pay a poll tax to have the right to vote despite clear law stating that was illegal and unconstitutional.

The GOP don’t care about anything but their power and control, and will continue to support the most corrupt and criminal admin in our history.

Make them pay for their support. GOP delenda est.

It’s not “get rid of everything”, it’s remove the military gear, reduce their numbers, and get them to do their job efficiently. Instead of swarming neighborhoods that are poor to get easy tickets, they’ll have to do their job where the CRIMINALS are at.

And then move the money saved into things like social programs that cause there to be LESS crime.

The defunding is really meant to apply to the current police. The only people who don’t actually believe we need some type of law enforcement are the SovCit types. But we can’t just say “do your jobs better” to the current group. We need a complete from the ground rebuilding of most police forces in the US.

What do we know about Boogaloo? I’ve heard them come up.

Boogaloo’s are a very disparate group that want to start a new Civil War. Apparently because they believe that their quality of life will somehow be enhanced by their squatting on the smouldering rubble of civilization.

Beyond the desire to start a war and the need to own firearms, as a group they do not appear to have any central unifying ideology or belief system. Many seem to be ‘libertarian’ in some shape, degree, or form. And many of their ideas seem to have come from that arena.

As a group, they tend to show up at protests heavily armed, wearing Hawaiian shirts and physically aligning themselves with the alt-right side. Although, again, some boogaloo bois have apparently sided with the BLM protesters.

FiveThirtyEight has an article showing that the ideas behind “defund” are much more popular than the slogan. In particular, people oppose “Defund the police” 58-31%. However “proposals to move some money currently going to police budgets into better officer training, local programs for homelessness, mental health assistance, and domestic violence” completely changes to supporting it 76-22%.

I still believe that the protesters should just stay the fuck away from the rally. Put up a lot of signage at overpasses coming into the city that tell rally attendees they are entering a death zone. Make it obvious that no one else wants to be within a mile of their rally. Let them infect each other without infecting protesters. Give it all to them.

I totally understand why “Defund the Police” is a toxic political slogan, one so bad I’m almost afraid it was planted by right-wing ratfuckers.

Any real politician needs to distance themself from it. But to the protestor in the street being harassed by out-of-control over-militarized gonzo racist cops, it sounds like profound truth. Fortunately there are enough people who understand the optics that it’s not become as wide a rallying cry as I feared.

…all that said, sensible Americans do need to keep “Defund the (x) Police” as a tool in their kit. There are departments out there which are such bad actors, removing them and starting from scratch is the only answer.

Vladimir Putin remarked a few months back that once Czech Republic, Poland, etc., go from being net beneficiaries of EU cash to net contributors to the EU budget….they’ll probably invoke Article 50 and leave.

That may have been true pre Brexit, but when the see what happens to a country that saves less than 1% of its GDP by leaving the EU only to lose up to 30% of its GDP by leaving the EU they’ll probably think again.

This very thing happened to my dad and me while we were test driving an Opel Kadett that was a candidate for my first car. We weren’t pushing it so hard though. It blew up, caught fire, and burned out to a charred shell before the local fire department (of which my dad was later chief) could put it out. We returned to the dealership and reported that the Kadett had failed the test drive and we would look elsewhere.

My first car, a used Corvair, waited until we paid for it, and then it blew its engine on the way home. I was 18. Was NOT speeding!

When various regions of France (Alsace-Loraine, Ile de France, Guyane) reached this stage the only way to avoid massive jumps in the death rates was to arrange cross-region evacuation of intensive care patients — special medicalised TGV trains, military air transports, convoys of ambulances and medicalised long distance coaches, helicopter flights to nearby Switzerland and Germany.

How is that going to work in the US?

It won’t - you start importing patients from out of area into smaller hospitals and their immediate area goes hot, it’s game over.

What’s really sad is that many convention centers were converted to field hospitals, but were way underutilized. But if you look at it from previous pandemics, they jumped the gun - these should have been built once a second wave started to show it’s tail.

Now that Beijing is in the throws of an outbreak, I haven’t seen anything about them constructing temporary hospitals - either they hav enough beds to handle this outbreak or they are going to be royally screwed. If I were a US airline that flies to Beijing, my last flight would have been two days ago.

Panhandle Public Health District Covid-19 Dashboard

Confirmed cases: 231 (+3)
Recovered: 142
Most by age: 10-19, then 20-29
Most by county: Scott’s Bluff (184), then Morrill (14)
Women are 2/3 of cases
Cumulative positive rate: 5.1%
Hospitalised: 5
Cumulative: 27
Available beds: 56%
Deaths: 2 (no change)

Jury trials will resume in the Panhandle. Such trials were delayed due to CDC guidelines, but with new so-called Directed Health Measures from Gov. Pete Ricketts (R-Ameritrade), they will now resume.

Interesting — 2 deaths out of 231 cases. Certainly can buy the view that the real death rate is less than 2%, perhaps close to 1% overall, though this probably reflects the age distribution of the patients, which is clearly much younger than in other communities.

So far so good.
But it’s still only June: we actually haven’t gone very far.

I agree that Joe and the Dems are polling quite well, and it is getting obvious - even to the “MSM” - that there is a vast reservoir of political energy out there that may very well spill over into a “blue tsunami”; though they will (of course, and as usual) try to do their best to downplay it it favor of the tried-and-true “Dems in Disarray” and “Radical Left” boilerplate; and conversely, ignore the Trump Administration’s blatant incompetence and corruption as much as possible (which, thankfully, seems to be getting to be an uphill task).

But I think the real campaign hasn’t begun as yet: and the GOP is going to be getting increasingly desperate to wring every single vote they possibly can out of their shrinking 2016 base.

So it is likely to be getting REAL ugly. Real soon.

I’m asking a serious question here. I’m not quite sure how this works.

From what I am reading, it goes like this. Police are drastically downsized and are only used to respond to serious crimes. The funding goes to other groups, who are the people you call when someone has a mental health crisis, or for minor/nonviolent crimes, or for accidents.

Ideally, you dissolve your current police department (killing the police union) and lease state cops while you gear up.

re: #361 makeitstop

I just now learned that that song is a Bachrach-David composition.

Makes sense, though. Structurally, it’s very similar to ‘Do You Know The Way to San Jose?,’ which they wrote for Dionne Warwick.

I was a huge Gene Pitney fangirl back in the day. He was quite a songwriter himself, and, ironically, one he wrote, He’s a Rebel, kept another Bacharach-David song he recorded, Only Love Can Break a Heart, from reaching #1 in 1962.

I “hope” Roberts didn’t do this to “balance the scales ” re trumps taxes and abortion next week

It’s likely. This is the guy who saved Obamacare while destroying the Voting Rights Act.

Tax forms may be in the constitutions favor but no way he’ll not restrict abortion further.
