I have a dreadful feeling that I'm going to be harping on this subject today... #281 pre-Boomer Marine brat
After reading the letter Winston posted, things began coming to mind from the past.
I came of age in the early Sixties, in the day of Buddhist monks immolating themselves in the streets of Saigon, protesting the tyranny of the Diem regime.
Mid-Sixties, in a near-empty bar in Baguio, a Filipino man explained the facts of daily life in the thug-ocracy, talking soft, frequently glancing over his shoulder.
Back in college from the Navy, I saw our fair-weather "radicals", so full of their own rhetoric, so clueless about what real revolution involves.
Barack Obama is a big talker. He is a child.
The streets of Tehran today, Saturday, is the last place he'd choose to be.
Just words, Barack, just words.

Here is what John Leyne, the Beeb reporter in Tehran, has to say:
' The situation is very tense and very confused. We don't have direct, immediate reports from the scene because of course we're not allowed to go there.
It's not even entirely clear whether the opposition wanted the demonstration to go ahead. There were a lot of mixed messages through the day whether or not it had been called off. My instinct is that I think opposition supporters are so fired up, they're going to turn up anyway.
They've been very good at getting messages between themselves very quickly, so it's possible they might move the demonstration if there are riot police in the planned location.

I wonder where Marie Terese Coin-Coin fits into this scheme.
The Melrose story begins with Marie Therese Coincoin, a slave born in 1742 eventually she was sold to a Frenchmen, Claude Thomas Pierre Metoyer, in time Metoyer freed Marie Therese and ten Franco-African children. Evidence points to Metoyer as the Father of these children. Marie Therese and son Louis Metoyer received large grants of land including the present Melrose plantation. Marie Therese and her sons would eventually build Yucca House (c.1796) the colonial residence, African House (c.1800) slave-fort and provision house, Big House (c.1833). Early Louisiana plantation home. Marie Therese and her children purchased slaves to help in clearing the land, and cultivating indigo, tobacco, corn, cotton, and raising cattle. Marie Therese would see her children and grandchildren live prosperous lives, owners of thousands of acres of land and numerous slaves.

It's on. The people must have figured out their choice was either to stand up and some die quickly, or lie down and all die slowly.
God protect the Iranian peopl.
I pray that this doesn't become Tiananmen Square MkII.
I've had this terrible feeling ever since last week that state violence was on teh cards - now I pray that more and more of the police and of the ordinary people will come out on the side of the dissenters.
May God protect them all!

Nah, a democrat willing to sell out allies like Democrats did to Vietnam & Cambodia--let the killing fields happen.
Democrats knew full well genocide was on the menu, and let it happen without thinking twice.
Jon Voight said recently he stopped being a liberal, when he witnessed liberals let genocide happen.

...Opponents of the Bush Doctrine, including Obama, first claimed that Arabs, and Muslims in general, are not ready for democracy. Once this was proved not to be the case in so many countries, the same people claimed that democracy would only bring the Islamists to power. However, that, too, was proved wrong. In Pakistan’s latest general election, the Islamist share of the vote shrunk from 11 percent to 3 percent. In Iraq, the Islamist parties were defeated across the board in municipal elections. In Kuwait, the Islamist bloc in the parliament was cut by half. In Lebanon, Hezbollah won 11 of the 128 seats in the parliament, and the coalition under its leadership failed to win a majority. The statement, “Democracy cannot be imposed by force,” is often made by Obama as if it were the cleverest of philosophical observations. However, we know that democracy can be imposed by force, as happened in West Germany, Japan, and Italy, among other places, after the Second World War. In any case, what happened in Afghanistan and Iraq was not the imposition of democracy by force, but the use of force to remove impediments to democracy. Imagine using force to topple the despots in Burma or Zimbabwe. Would that not remove impediments to democracy?
In the case of Iran, the phrase was used to reduce the debate to a choice between preemptive war, regarded as the original sin, and preemptive surrender. Because we don’t want war with Iran, let us surrender to the mullahs! Opponents of the Bush Doctrine had hoped for “a shot at a democratic election” to prove that there was no need for regime change in Tehran. Something that looked like a free election would have made it easier for Obama to sell his appeasement policy. We now know that the theory of “evolution within the Islamic regime,” so dear to Joe Biden, is pure nonsense. Totalitarian regimes cannot reform themselves.

Iran...the unwelcome distraction
3) Obama has no idea what to do about Iran, and he knows it. Our President has always resembled Chance the gardener in Being There. It is easy to imagine that he is acutely aware that a few short years ago he was a State Senator in Illinois and that he is utterly unqualified to deal with matters as weighty as what is now transpiring in Iran. On this theory, his silence manifests an appropriate modesty.

Australian Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said she was "humiliated" when Senate President John Hogg ordered her teary 2-year-old daughter removed from the parliamentary chamber before a vote, in accordance with parliamentary rules.
"It shows that parliament is still based on a very male model and I just think it's absolutely ridiculous," said Women's Electoral Lobby Chairwoman Eva Cox.
Hogg said he was responsible for "proper conduct" in the upper house, but supported a review of rules which bar children and other outsiders from the Senate during votes.
The Senate leader of the conservative Nationals party Barnaby Joyce said Hanson-Young had staged a stunt and could have avoided being caught out during a locked-door vote, with bells alerting all lawmakers beforehand.
"Within that Senate are votes for things that might send people to war, that might get people killed. This requires certain sacrifices," Joyce said. "The child is a prop and the Senate has become a stage."

In Iran, you win or you die
By David Warren, The Ottawa Citizen
Everything is on the line in Iran, at present -- not only the future of the Iranian regime, but also of the Middle East, and by extension, the most tangible western interests.
Consider: if the Iranian regime were to fall, by far the largest organized threat to peace in the region would be removed. This includes not only a fairly proximate nuclear threat to Israel (for all we know North Korea's second nuclear test was actually Iran's first), but sponsorship of the most efficient part of the world's Islamist terror apparatus.
Hezbollah and Hamas are both, today, for all practical purposes, Iranian proxies. Through them, and through other channels, the regime of the ayatollahs makes money, materiel, and expertise available to terror cells as far away as Argentina, Sweden, the Philippines.
But more significantly, Hezbollah and Hamas together represent an Iranian veto on any Palestinian settlement, or any attempt to ameliorate that conflict, with all that that implies.
The Syrian regime, most dangerous of Israel's neighbours, would, in the absence of Iranian support, have to make accommodations, indeed find new allies.
North Korea's chief conduit into the illicit Middle Eastern arms trade would be lost.
The principal external threat to Iraq would be removed, along with sponsorship of Iraq's own domestic insurgencies. Afghanistan would also be more secure.
In economic terms, the threat of a world crisis provoked by the interdiction of oil shipments from the Persian Gulf would disappear.
Both Russia and China would lose a very important lever of influence on world affairs.
If the ayatollahs come down, the whole world situation is changed, and in every conceivable way for the better. It is impossible to overestimate the stakes of the insurrection in Iran.
As I've written before, the "election rigging" fiasco was of no consequence, except as the spark that ignited this latest and largest of several successive popular insurrections.
As Amir Taheri has put it, the opposition candidate who lost the rigged election, Mir Hossein Mousavi, is just "a balloon that a section of the Iranian middle class inflated to show its anger not only at Ahmadinejad but also at the entire Khomeinist regime."
Likewise, very naive foreigners, such as Barack Obama of the United States, vested foolish hopes in him as some kind of velvet revolutionary.
But in the course of the last week, events have transformed the issue.
Ayatollah Khamenei's extremely forthright statement to the demonstrators Friday clarified the situation. The regime understands that its very existence is at stake. So do its opponents. You win, or you die.
The demands of the people in the streets -- and there have been quite literally millions of them, turned out in every significant Iranian town, invisible to western media holed up under house arrest in Tehran, but quite apparent through the Internet -- are unambiguous.
They want "regime change." They do not want an amelioration, but an end, to the morality laws, the thugs who enforce them, the secret prisons, the international brinkmanship, the terror networks, and the rest of the regime's infrastructure of power.
They explicitly want an end to the "Islamic Republic of Iran," which, as Taheri and others have long been explaining, is a triple oxymoron (it isn't Islamic in any orthodox sense, it isn't a Republic in any political sense, and it does not recognize Iran as a nation).

If course the problem is verifying the claims in those tweets. What is to be believed?
Other than actual (unmodified) video of events can be gathered, the truth is like a whisper, hidden by a 100,000 wildly bellowing football fans.
Yes - it is a huge problem, verying these tweets.
On the other hand - as no 'foreign' reporter is even allwoed out of his office, and since especially these bomb news are reported in Iranian state-run TV - should we believe what they say?
We can't verify that either - and I'm inclined to make up my own mind using the tweets from those who have consistlently been accurate in distinguishing between what is confirmed and what is rumour.
Some of them are not tweeting right now - I hope they are all right!

NOW is the time for all good Iraqis to come to the aid of their Shiite neighbors.
(return some of their terrorist IEDs).
Mr. Al Maliki, the PResident of Iraq, spent many years hiding out in Iran, he should speak out against this terrorist regime as Pres. George Bush did, and distinguish himself from Pres. Obama the Carterite weakling terrorist accomodator.
He did distinguish himself. Maliki was one of the first ones congratulating Ahmadimonkey, alongside Thugo Chavez and Hamas. I believe Karzai was one of the early ones too.

“There are limits to this transformation mystique that Obama has,” he said. “There are limits on what he can deliver on.”

From VOA, in this order...
US Congress Condemns Violence Against Demonstrators in Iran
By Dan Robinson
Washington
19 June 2009
Both houses of Congress passed a resolution Friday condemning the Iranian government's violent response to protests after the disputed presidential election. The resolution was introduced by Republicans who are frustrated that U.S. President Barack Obama has not more directly criticized the crackdown and Tehran's suppression of the Internet and mobile phones.
But White House spokesman Robert Gibbs Friday told reporters the resolution reflects the views Mr. Obama has consistently made clear. "Obviously, we welcome the resolution. We believe, despite the question, that it echoes the words of President Obama throughout the week," he said. ....
Sure it does.

Thank you and OMG those are clearly gunshots - lots of gunshots!
I would guess some gunshots, as the people cleared the street. It also would be that burning vehicle popping. I know this because some gangsters burned a vehicle on our street last spring at about 2am. There were lots of pops. We thought they might be gunshots also. And brilliant as we are, we ran outside to go make sure the neighbors next to the fire were awake, etc. The cops didn't show up until after the fire dept, which didn't arrive for more than 20 min. So, if it were a gang situation involving shooting and/or self defense, we would be on our own. I personally see the Iranian video as a public service announcement for Americans not to let the govt disarm all of us. People need to be choosing what level of defense they want for their homes and neighborhood streets.

Apparently, many were prevented from assembling by the security forces, many were 'dispersed' by teargas and shootings.
That they still gather so many is amazing.
Also - as I reported from tha blog a few posts up - there are protests going on in other towns, like Shiraz.

..."She strongly urges the authorities to ensure that official and semi-official forces act strictly in accordance with the law," he said. "It is the responsibility of the government to ensure that militia members and regular law enforcement agencies do not resort to illegal acts of violence. If they are perceived to be acting outside the law, it could provoke a serious deterioration in the security situation, which would be a great tragedy and is in nobody's interests," he added. The High Commissioner has reminded the Iranian authorities they have signed several International Conventions that guarantee no one should be subjected to arbitrary arrest or detention and guarantee the right of freedom of speech and assembly. She said they should live up to their legal obligations.

Certainly in some places the basiji are going in with excessive force, it would seem.
We must keep in mind that tehse tweets are from single people, who cannot see and know everything that happens - there seem to be many different groups clashing with the police in Tehran. Its not just happening in one place.

A blast at a Khomeini shrine, according to Reuters:TEHRAN (Reuters) - A suicide bomber blew himself up near the shrine of Iran's revolutionary founder, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, in Tehran on Saturday, Iran's semi-official Mehr news agency reported.
"A few minutes ago a suicide bomber blew himself up at the shrine," Mehr quoted a police official, Hossein Sajedinia, as saying. Two other people were wounded in the incident in the northern wing of the shrine, another news agency, Fars, said.
I think some skepticism is in order about who's behind this incident.

Not any more. They are fed up and see an opportunity I think. Read this letter posted on winston08's blog.
This is a brief letter written by an Iranian woman who is going to attend the anti-regime rally tomorrow:I'll participate in the rally tomorrow in Tehran. It might be violent. I may be one of those who will die tomorrow. I want to listen to all beautiful tunes that I have heard in my life, again. I want to listen to some cheap Los Angeles made Iranian music. I always wanted to have much narrower eyebrows too. Yeah, I'll check in with my hair-dresser tomorrow before I go to the rally. Oh, there are some excellent scenes in the famous Iranian movie Hamoon I want to see before I leave. And I gotta re-visit my own bookshelf. Iran's poets Shamloo's and Farrokhzad's poems are worth re-reading. I've to see the family photo albums once again.
I'll have to call my friends and say good-bye to them. In this big world, my possession is only two bookshelves. I've already told mom and dad whom to give these books to in case I never come back. There are only two more courses left for me to get my BA degree but to hell with the degree. I'm anxious and excited.
I wrote these scattered words for the future generations so that they know we were not sentimental or uselessly emotional. I'm writing this so they know we did every thing in our power to make this work for them and so that they realize if our forefathers surrendered to the Arab and Mongolian invaders physically, but they didn't give in to their tyranny with their spirits. They resisted it. And I wrote this for tomorrow's children...

I think this paragraph, at the end of a CNN on line article, is part of the larger reason why the main stream media is loosing their position as the "go to" people for truth..
"Because of the Iranian government's restrictions on newsgathering, CNN could not independently verify the reports."
What has happened to the journalistic spirit, to find the truth, to dig for it if needed, to show some mettle the get the facts and then the courage to stand behind what you are reporting?

I haven't made myself an expert on this. Mousavi does seem to be pretty much more of the same, but his wife has made many statements that really do seem to be radical and, dare I say it, progressive.
But it does it occur to me, as I prepare to drive out to Trader Joe's and buy a carload of Israeli products today, that many of these pro-Mousavi demonstrators would probably like to beat me to a pulp for doing that.

He claimed 10,000 complaints have been been made, according to state-run Press TV. "They have called on the police to deal with rallies firmly," he said.
"The recent rallies destroyed 700 buildings, burst 300 banks into flame, damaged 300 cars and 300 public properties," Radan added. '

I'm just tuning in this morning.
Sadly, it looks like today in Iran is turning out to be as ugly as we had feared it might be.
And this is going to sound cold, maybe, but there would not have been any other outcome. The people are making their stand, and the Iranian government are responding as most people expected.
And I suspect the protestors knew this before hand. That's the chance they took, and they appear to be standing by their decision.
There is no way to erase what the world is seeing, the Iranian government has been forced to show the world it's heart of terror, in real time. No way to cover this up.
If anything, in the least, the world has been handed all the evidence they need about Iran and it's homicidal leadership.
Now, the next step will be up to the democracies of the world, and what they do with this evidence.

I wish there were more evidence. ...The Associated Press reported that 50 to 60 protesters were seriously beaten by police and militiamen and taken to a hospital in central Tehran. Demonstrators could be seen dragging away comrades bloodies by baton strikes, AP said.Members of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guard Corps, riot police in full gear and members of the pro-government Basij militia were deployed in force to try to keep protesters from gathering or to corral them in side streets and alleys so they could not get to the square, the main starting point of the planned rally.
In a separate development, state-run news media reported that a bomb exploded near a shrine to the late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the father of Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution. The semi-official Fars News Agency said one person was killed and two others wounded in the blast.
Witnesses said police appeared to be having a difficult time controlling the protesters. Many of the riot police were riding around on motorcycles in their efforts to head off marchers. A number of Shiite Muslim clerics joined the protesters and were trying to lead them to Revolution Square, the witnesses said.
The Iranian government has prohibited foreign reporters from covering the protests.
Women pleaded with security forces to stop fighting the people, witnesses said. Some of the women chanted, "Help us, security force," as the police pushed protesters back. ...
...The prospect of a violent crackdown posed a quandary not only for the Iranian opposition but also for the Obama administration. U.S. officials said Khamenei's speech would not change President Obama's hands-off approach toward Iran's internal turmoil or his policy of seeking dialogue with Iran on its nuclear program and other critical issues. But they said that violent repression could force a reevaluation of Obama's overtures to Tehran. ...Opposition Protesters Clash With Riot Police in Tehran

I think they have proxy servers - apparently Iranian students in the USA and Great Britain are doing their best to get these tweets out to the West. I also think they come via the web, and not predominantly via cell phones.
The Iranian twitters also seem to use satellite connections - and the Beeb was reproted yesterday as saying that the Iranian government was interfering with their 'World news' broadcasts in Farsi - so the Beeb twiddled some more satellites. Alledgedly.

Slaughter of Foreigners in Yemen Bears Mark of Former Gitmo Detainee, Say Experts
...The United States is negotiating with Yemen, according to Mohammed Albasha, spokesman for Embassy of the Republic of Yemen in Washington, over the possible release of the more than 100 Yemeni nationals currently behind bars in Gitmo to Saudi Arabia’s rehabilitation program — the same one al-Shihri attended.Rep. Peter King (R-NY), Ranking Member on the House Homeland Security Committee, opposes closing Gitmo and says Obama is rushing "helter skelter" to find homes for the remaining detainees to meet his "arbitrary deadline," which he says may come at the cost of national security.
“The president’s policies are very very disturbing. He appears to have decided to close Guantanamo without any idea of where these detainees are going to go and is now trying desperately to find countries and places for these people to go,” King told FOXNews.com.
“By far largest number of detainees comes from Yemen, and they are hardcore dangerous people. Sending them back to Yemen, where prisoners who have been held there before somewhere magically escaped from prison, and is in many ways the centerpiece of the Al Qaeda movement — returning them to Yemen is just inviting disaster.
"Sending them to Saudi Arabia to the rehabilitation center is just putting off the inevitable threat to the United States,” King said. “I am very concerned that these prisoners will soon be back in the battlefield hurting Americans.”

Well the tweeter reports we've been getting have been saying that bloody protestors were thrown in the backs of vans by the police/Basij thugs and taken Lord knows where. And there have been tweeter reports of folks being shot up too.

Well, but as Charles has said, Twitter is great for spreading false rumors. Who knows.
I think the iranian twitetrs are wll aware of this - and they have, in the last few days, repeatedly warned about security 'false flag' twitters.
One's got to sift out whom to trust and whom not, but otherwise, I regard this tweeting from Iran as reliable as the witnesses post factum which reporters ahd to chase up themselves in the good old days before the electronic age.
In fact - this removes the layer of interpretation and spin, which MFM reporters invariably will give to their 'sources' - who also cannot all have been totally reliable.
It gives us the freedom to make up our own minds (see the reports about Annanpour above!)
Therefore - two or three tweets about the same thing are as reliable as a reporter's write-up who has spoken to two or three people ... imho!

Well, you and I can't, but various foreign governments could. But that could end up being very counterproductive if it appeared that the whole insurrection was a project of foreign troublemakers, rather than a legitimate grass-roots Iranian movement.
Right now is a critical time for world leaders to measure their words and actions very carefully.

While I understand the emotion of your wish, I think recent history has shown that--overtime--citizens peacefully protesting and being physically abused by the "authority" has done more to create LASTING change than outright violent revolt.
The problem with violent revolt is that it takes a violent person to orchestrate. Then that person or groups of people are in charge and you just get more of the same.
Lasting peace and stability can take a generation. People who are willing to work within the system to change laws.

Well I hope it stiffens the resolve of the Iranian revolutionaries too, but don't count on the rest of the world really coming down hard on the regime, especially when the U.S. - the "defender of the Free World" has been mostly silent until Congress - House and Senate passed resolutions MUCH stronger than anything President Obama has ever said before and that mofo Gibbs saying that that's what Obama believes too - reckon Obama is too busy trying to swat flies to actually say something fucking meaningful about what's happening today.
And he is supposedly talking (and yes, silence is a way of talking) FOR US! Damnit.
The Iranian people are putting their lives in the line in the name of "Hope and Change" and President Hopenchange himself cannot even muster a word or two of encouragement.

Good morning alegrias! And your comment is Spot On. Ghandi was fighting against the British Empire which has some respect for non-violent protests. These bastards in the Regime have brought in "shock troops" from Hamas and Hezzbollah to help then do their dirty work.

Tehranis are fighting totalitarian terrorists with no scruples but self survival.
Islamic "revolution" my ass. It's a terrorist state with terrorist tentacles & NUKES, and Pres. Obama's cool with that group.
Pres. Obama is no freedom defending, liberty loving hero to the Middle East anymore.

It's possible. I was also just reading that there's a crystal form of tear gas that can be mixed with water.

Well, I gaurentee you, that passive measures against hamas/hezbollock/IRG thugs will end up with thousands dead and the regime still in charge and more repressive than it is now.
We shall see.

Anything is possible, but this seems highly improbabale. This isn;t Saddam gasing a region (the Kurds) where non of "his" people are. The police/army/basiji are all in the same proximity as the protesters. I think they would think very unkindly of the mullahs if they were in the line of the acid

Ping, I don't think violent revolt in Iran will create lasting change.
At this point, they don't have much choice. Non-violent protests will be met with violent countermeasures - the "Supreme Leader" has promised that. I have no doubt that there are scores of "peaceful resisters" buried in unmarked graved throughout Iran.
Were we discussing a more civilized group of people it may be different, but we're not. We we discussing people who have even a scintilla of respect for human rights it may be different, but we're not.

I might be wrong on that. I was looking at pics like this and this. Camoflage lead me to believe they were military but some of the pics are labeled police. They are different that the police we were seeing earlier in the week who wore black and had "Police" written across their backs. I don't know who they are.
The NIAC site has previously identified those green camouflage uniforms as being worn by the IRGC's crack riot police.

People, don't forget that there are TWO armies in Iran -- the IRGC/Sahab/Pasdaran and the regular Army.

You can stay here and derail this thread into squabbling. Please don't bring it onto the new threads. It makes it harder to get real information from the posts when people are just arguing nonsense. Thanks.

re: #404 Last Mohican
I haven't made myself an expert on this. Mousavi does seem to be pretty much more of the same, but his wife has made many statements that really do seem to be radical and, dare I say it, progressive.
But it does it occur to me, as I prepare to drive out to Trader Joe's and buy a carload of Israeli products today, that many of these pro-Mousavi demonstrators would probably like to beat me to a pulp for doing that.
In a way it's a little sad... impresses me that the mullahs may just be letting the non-in-crowd blow off some steam. Then they'll let them have Mousavi, which is another of their guys and Isael (the canary) and Euro cities and then the rest of us will be toast... because this uproar has taken pressure off the nuke program. Now they can finish up, no matter which candidate gets the star of approval from the mullahs.

re: #545 ggt
I agree. But we are talking about Iran, not Iraq, or Nazi Germany. If hundreds of thousands of people are willing to protest peacefully, consistently, latsting change will come.
I don't put Iran in the same category as the Taliban.
Gotta disagree with you there. The Taliban is probably worse, but I'd rather not measure how good a regime is by comparing atrocities.
Bad is bad.
