TN Lt. Gov. Ramsey: Religious Freedom Doesn’t Apply to Muslims

Wingnuts • Views: 4,789

The Lt. Governor of Tennessee, Ron Ramsey, is running for governor. And he thinks America’s constitutionally guaranteed freedom of religion may not apply to Muslims.

At a recent event in Hamilton County, Ramsey was asked by a man in the audience about the “threat that’s invading our country from the Muslims.” Ramsey proclaimed his support for the Constitution and the whole “Congress shall make no law” thing when it comes to religion. But he also said that Islam, arguably, is less a faith than it is a “cult.”

“Now, you could even argue whether being a Muslim is actually a religion, or is it a nationality, way of life, cult whatever you want to call it,” Ramsey said. “Now certainly we do protect our religions, but at the same time this is something we are going to have to face.”

The interesting part of the story to me, aside from the blatant bigotry, is that Ramsey is essentially parroting the un-American ideas of Dutch far right ideologue Geert Wilders, who also calls Islam a “cult” that does not deserve legal status as a religion. That bad old European ethnic/religious hatred is spreading to the US.

Wasn’t Christianity once little more than a “cult,” at least as far as the civilized world of the time (read: Romans) were concerned? Or Judaism to the leaders of Egypt?

Republicans from the northeast appear to be far more tolerant and rational than those from certain other regions. I sure hope the influence of the northerners will be felt in the national Republican party.

Reposted from the end of a couple threads down:

While we’re at it, can anyone identify the GOP’s platform anymore? Their next convention is going to be fascinating.

Plank 1: We are against Democrats.

Plank 2: We are for whoever is against Democrats.

Plank 3: We are against Big Government.

Plank 4: If we are the Government, ignore plank 3.

Plank 5: We are pro-individual rights. The Big Government should stay out of our personal lives.

Plank 6: One exception to Plank 5 is gay marriage.

Plank 7: Another exception to Plank 5 is women’s right to choose.

Plank 8: Another exception to Plank 5 is Muslim’s right to build community centers.

Plank 9: Another exception to Plank 5 is anyone who looks like they might not be an American needing to prove that they are when encountered by law enforcement.

Plank 10: Another exception to Plank 5 is the belief that we’re all equal, but we all need to acknowledge that Christians are more right than everyone else.

Plank 11: Mormons aren’t real Christians.

Plank 12: We believe Obama is not a citizen and should go back to Africa, but not in a racist way.

Plank 13: We believe in the land of opportunity. But less so for people who speak spanish.

Plank 14: Dinosaurs and man existed together on earth at the same time.

Plank 15: Global warming is a myth and if the globe is warming it’s because god wants it that way.

The guarantee of freedom of religion also applies to cults.

A cult is any religion you don’t like. Plenty of people claim that Mormons and Catholics are cultists. Here in Texas, I have heard Baptists claim that Methodism and even the Churches of Christ are cults. The Texas Aggies are sometimes called a cult, and they don’t even admit to being a relgion.

I give a lecture in one of my courses on medieval nuns’ religious practices. At one section meeting, the students lit into the TA, saying, “This isn’t a religion we’re talking about! This is a cult! We should be criticizing it, not just studying it like it was something normal.”

“It was normal for Catholics,” said the TA.

Reposted from earlier thread:

Not all too long ago, the Church I belong to was held to be an evil “cult” (aka “The Whore of Babylon”) by a great number of these same people. (Still is, by the bigger freaks.) The only reason Catholicism got an early toehold in North America (the Spanish aside, of course), is that a couple of colonies, Maryland among them, were specifically designed to be, as it were, Catholic “reservations”. This is why there are Catholic crosses bottony on the Maryland flag and why the first diocese in the country was that of Baltimore.

When the Irish started showing up, there were anti-Catholic riots a-plenty, and lots of lynchings, too.

These people either do not know this history or secretly wish to repeat it.

“Dude, you sound like a fuckin’ idiot and nobody is going to take you seriously.”

re: #58 SanFranciscoZionist

But Wamp has promised they won’t secede on his watch.

Actually that was Haslam:

“I can assure you if I’m elected governor, we won’t secede from the union. Period,” Haslam said at a campaign stop in Columbia. “You know, the country had that experiment 150 years ago … I think most Tennesseans are committed to making America better, not leaving it.”

Wamp said:

Wamp did not deny the accuracy of the quote. However, he told reporters at a campaign stop in Memphis that he doesn’t know how the writer of the article on was able to “extrapolate” from an interview that he had suggested secession could be considered in response to federal mandates like President Barack Obama’s new health care law.

“No one wants even talk of secession, no one wants that,” Wamp said. “But the fact is we have a conflict and we need to resolve the conflict, and we need strong tough governors to step up.”

Director Oliver Stone belittled the Holocaust during a shocking interview with the Sunday Times today, claiming that America’s focus on the Jewish massacre was a product of the “Jewish domination of the media.”

The director also defended Hitler and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and railed against the “powerful lobby” of Jews in America.

Stone said that his upcoming Showtime documentary series “Secret History of America,” seeks to put Hitler and Communist dictator Joseph Stalin “in context.”

“Hitler was a Frankenstein but there was also a Dr Frankenstein. German industrialists, the Americans and the British. He had a lot of support,” Stone told reporter Camilla Long during the interview, which can be found behind the paywall on the Sunday Times’ website.

That’s so right it’s Eggs Ackley right.

It’s the old Europe that favors Xenophobia and tribal nationalism. It’s UnAmerican to let your momentary pangs of xenophobia against those who are different control your life, on the other hand it’s very Elder European to let class/race/religion control all aspects of life. Sucks to be them and we sure as hell don’t want to become them here. (Are you freaking listening Rush, Glen, Newt?)

Oliver Stone: ‘Jewish-Dominated Media’ Prevents Hitler from Being Portrayed ‘in Context’

Stone said that, “Hitler did far more damage to the Russians than the Jewish people, 25 or 30 [million killed].”

The Sunday Times interviewer then asked why there was such a focus on the Holocaust.

“The Jewish domination of the media,” responded Stone. “There’s a major lobby in the United States. They are hard workers. They stay on top of every comment, the most powerful lobby in Washington. Israel has f***** up United States foreign policy for years.”

The director, who recently met with Iranian President Ahmadinejad, also slammed the U.S. policy toward Iran as “horrible.”

“Iran isn’t necessarily the good guy,” said Stone. “[B]ut we don’t know the full story!”

The Scarface screenwriter had even more encouraging words for socialist Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez, who Stone called “a brave, blunt, earthy” man. The director has recently been promoting his Chavez-praising documentary called “South of the Border.”

When the interviewer pointed out that Chavez has had a less-than-stellar record on human rights, Stone immediately dismissed the criticism.

“The internet’s fully free [in Venezuela],” said Stone. “You can say what the hell you like. Compare it with all the other countries: Mexico, Guatemala, above all Colombia, which is a joke.”

I bet Sean Penn would agree.

Howard Dean on Fox:

Fox News did something that was absolutely racist. They had an obligation to find out what was really in the clip. They had been pushing a theme of black racism with this phony Black Panther crap and this business and this Sotomayor and all this other stuff.

The Tea Party called out their racist fringe and I think the Republican Party’s got to stop appealing to its racist fringe. And Fox News is what did that. You put that on. Continuing to cater to this theme of minority racism and stressing comments like this — some of which are taken out of context — does not help the country knit itself together.

That’s “losing it”? Sounds a lot like truth to me.

Palin not the big vote getter:
[Link: publicpolicypolling.blogspot.com…]

The New Hampshire Senate numbers we’ll have coming out this week (general election Tuesday, primary Wednesday) are a great example of the double edged sword that is a Sarah Palin endorsement. In the short term Kelly Ayotte has opened a wide lead in the Republican primary. But the Palin endorsement could be hurting Ayotte’s chances of winning in the general election.

51% of New Hampshire voters overall say they’re less likely to vote for a candidate endorsed by Palin to just 26% who say a Palin endorsement would make them more inclined to be supportive. The disparity is even larger when it comes to moderate voters- 14% of them are positively swayed by a Palin nod while 65% say her support is more likely to turn them against one of her preferred candidates.

Ed Morresy and the rest of Hot Air readers are cheering the ethnic cleansing of Arizona: Is Arizona’s law working already?

The federal government keeps saying that it lacks the resources to enforce the laws it has, but quite obviously, Arizona has much fewer resources than the Obama administration, and all they had to do was pass a law and make it stick. If the federal government took its job seriously rather than look to pander to Hispanic voters with its deliberate incompetence on immigration enforcement, the issue would mostly resolve itself with little effort — and the resources remaining would be more than sufficient to deal with those left.

Many of those packing in Arizona are heading back across the border, but some intend to move elsewhere in the US. Expect more states to start getting tough on immigration enforcement as Arizona’s success becomes more apparent.

The article he links to: Migrants sell up and flee Arizona ahead of crackdown

The part he doesn’t except….

While the law targets undocumented migrants, legal residents and their U.S.-born children are getting caught up in the rush to leave Arizona.

Mexican housewife Gabriela Jaquez, 37, said she is selling up and leaving for New Mexico with her husband, who is a legal resident, and two children born in Phoenix.

“Under the law, if you transport an illegal immigrant, you are committing a crime,” she said as she sold children’s clothes at a yard sale with three other families. “They could arrest him for driving me to the shops.”

Lunaly Bustillos, a legal resident from Mexico, hoped to sell some clothes, dumbbells and an ornamental statue on Sunday before her family heads for Albuquerque, New Mexico, on Monday.

“It makes me sad and angry too because I feel I have the right to be here,” said Bustillos, 17, who recently graduated from high school in Phoenix.

Chavez threatens to cut off oil supplies to U.S.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez threatened Sunday to cut off oil supplies to the U.S. if Colombia commits “armed aggression” against Venezuela.

“We wouldn’t send one more drop” of oil to the U.S., which is the top buyer of oil from Venezuela, Chavez said in a speech. Venezuela is fifth-ranked on U.S. oil imports, sending 851,000 barrels here a day.

Venezuela cut ties with its neighbor Thursday after Colombia presented evidence at the Organization of American States of 87 alleged FARC guerrilla camps running out of Venezuela. The FARC rebels are designated as a terrorist organization by the United States.

On Friday, State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said the allegations were important and merited further investigation.

Speaking of Al Gore…

Police: No comment about Gore interview

Portland police are not commenting on reports that detectives have interviewed former Vice President Al Gore about accusations that he molested a Portland masseuse in 2006.

Bureau spokesperson Det. Mary Wheat refused to confirm or deny reports that detectives interviewed Gore on Thursday. The National Enquirer, which first broke the story about the allegations, reports the interview took place in San Francisco. The tabloid did not cite any sources for the report or say what Gore supposedly told the detectives. Several blogs have repeated the claim.

“We do not comment on ongoing investigations,” Wheat told the Portland Tribune.

Wheat also declined to speculate about when the investigation will be completed. At the same time, she suggested it could be finished soon.

“The chief has said he wants it wrapped up quickly, and we have assigned the resources to the investigation to do so,” Wheat said.

Molly Hagerty claims Gore molested her in a downtown Portland hotel in October 2006. Several months after the alleged encounter, she had a lawyer contact the police on her behalf. She then canceled three interviews with the police. Her lawyer subsequently told the police Hagerty would pursue the case civilly.

Approximately three years later, Hagerty contacted the police herself. She read a lengthy statement about the incident to investigators during an interview. The bureau closed the investigation, however, in part because of a lack of evidence.

Sarkozy vows to avenge beheading of French hostage

President Nicolas Sarkozy vowed Monday to avenge the murder of a 78-year-old French aid worker who was kidnapped and beheaded in the Sahara desert by Al Qaeda’s North African wing.

Sarkozy spoke after Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) declared it had killed Michel Germaneau in revenge, after French and Mauritanian soldiers stormed one of the group’s camps in Mali and killed six militants.

“Dear compatriots, this crime committed against Michel Germaneau will not go unpunished,” Sarkozy said, warning French nationals to avoid the arid Sahel region running through Mauritania, Mali, Niger and southern Algeria.

“We demand instantly of our countrymen that they abandon absolutely all travel in the Sahel zone,” Sarkozy said, adding that he had dispatched his foreign minister to the region to review the safety of expatriates.

Even top Republican strategists are downplaying their expectations. The “throw the bums out” strategy is putting as much light on the obstructionists as it is on the majority. I can’t tell you much about the stone. It came from a slab of turquoise I purchased about two months ago. It is a powered blue turquoise mixed with a calcite matrix. It was hard to cut and polish, since some pieces of it had more calcite veins going right across the stone and tended to break apart. That piece in the store is stable… I have one more teardrop I managed to cut from it that was stable, but it’s not been worked into a choker yet.

I have a lot more turquoise that has not been worked and/or worked and still waiting an inspiration for a design.

Americans, by and large, don’t like being associated with racism. The tight-rope a lot of GOP candidates are walking right now (especially those with tight primary races against teabaggers still on the block) has got to be tough. The longer they refuse to come out strongly against this crap, the worse their chances get in the general, and they know it. But they need that core group to get through their primaries, and can’t attack them until they’ve secured their votes.

The whole thing about a theocracy is that the theocrats really do have to believe “my God is bigger than your God.”

IOW, other beliefs have to be delegitimized. Now, in some of our minds those beliefs may not be legitimate philosophically to begin with, but in a theocracy opposing beliefs have to be legally illegitimate.

If America is to be a Christian Nation, as many in the ultra-right in this country maintain, then it has to follow that other beliefs are illegitimate.

Maybe my text description is misleading. It is about 14-15 inches with the cord pulled tight, “hippy knots” pulled down to the sterling silver swirls… fully extended (if you wanted to wear it down on a dress or blouse, is about 22 inches… I guess what I was trying to say in the ads is that they can be the standard 18 inches like most chains.

re: #230 darthstar

Americans, by and large, don’t like being associated with racism. The tight-rope a lot of GOP candidates are walking right now (especially those with tight primary races against teabaggers still on the block) has got to be tough. The longer they refuse to come out strongly against this crap, the worse their chances get in the general, and they know it. But they need that core group to get through their primaries, and can’t attack them until they’ve secured their votes.

I think there are a lot of hypocrites on this point. There are a lot of people that, in public and on the record, will say the right thing about racism. But it is my sad experience that many of those same people will tell the racist joke if they think the coast is clear.

I suspect (in the absence of reliable data, I freely admit) that many of the tea party people are like that. Most will never say the offensive thing in public, but behind closed doors I suspect the conversation is quite different. But the overt racists with the hateful signs are relatively rare.

I would very much like to be wrong about this, but I don’t think that we as a society have really progressed THAT much.

No, you have. As Avenue Q says, everyone’s a little bit racist. It’s one of those things that makes us human - a tiny primal suspicion of those who look different, or an inclination to make jokes about the stereotyped differences. It is simply a part of who we are.

Does that make it okay to go on racist tirades behind closed doors? No. Does it make it okay to continually bring race to the fore as a divisive issue, and use it to attack your political opponents? No. Does it make it okay to make racially offensive jokes? No.

Then again, there’s a world of difference between having a non-PC chuckle about Indian cab drivers, and lynching blacks for being uppity. There’s a world of difference between grumbling about not being able to understand inner-city Ebonics, and Whites Only signs at counters. The West has come a very long way. America, and the English-speaking Western world in general, has a very small racism problem in comparison to the whole rest of the world. A relatively small number of backwards retreads will continue to make news, but this is the fault of the sensationalist media, and the huddled masses who eagerly lap it up.

The constant drum of racial dogwhistles put out by the Conservative cult media are a small noise. The bald-faced racism used by Breitbart and the like to attack their political opponents plays to a relatively small audience, on the national scale. It’s a playground moment - ‘So you called me a racist? Oh yeah, well you are too!’ - which we see played out every day on our national media, and even on this blog.

imho, the term “racist” has lost what it really means

Most that are today labeled “racist” are probably bigoted and/or prejudiced

It is rare to find a true “racist”. But the term is now so widely (and wrongly) used it fits any number of real and/or percieved sins

I use the term as described in the second of the two definitions below:

rac·ism (rā’sĭz’əm)
n.
1. The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others.
2. Discrimination or prejudice based on race.
rac’ist adj. & n

2. a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination.
3. hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.

B)
BIGOT
–noun
a person who is utterly intolerant of any differing creed, belief, or opinion.

C)
–noun
1. an unfavorable opinion or feeling formed beforehand or without knowledge, thought, or reason.
2. any preconceived opinion or feeling, either favorable or unfavorable.

4. such attitudes considered collectively: The war against prejudice is never-ending.

Sorry ,,,,but there’s a HUGE difference between thinking you, by your race alone, are superior to other races as opposed to being intolerant of other races as opposed to unfavorable opinions of other races (i.e. stereotypes.
If you beleive otherwise, thats a you problem, not a me problem
I know and understand the differences

359 Kragar (Antichrist )  Mon, Jul 26, 2010 2:43:56pm

re: #351 JasonA

Well, in October of 2009, a new application from Apple landed in the U.S. Patent Office. Apple’s idea was to program devices to periodically interrupt users with unskippable ads. The ads would temporarily halt performance of the device in order to “compel attention.” That on its own is pretty nightmarish but, innovators that they are, Apple found a way to crank it up to that hard-to-reach “Lovecraftian” level.

Their words:

“Apple can further determine whether a user pays attention to the advertisement. The determination can include performing, while the advertisement is presented, an operation that urges the user to respond; and detecting whether the user responds to the performed operation. If the response is inappropriate or nonexistent, the system will go into lock down mode in some form or other until the user complies. In the case of an iPod, the sound could be disconnected rendering it useless until compliance is met. For the iPhone, no calls will be able to be made or received.”

Until you jailbreak that bitch and load some apps to re-enable your device or mimic the responses so Apple thinks you paid attention to the spam.

re: #386 WindUpBird

PC games really haven’t gone anywhere, and a lot of great PC games have system requirements low enough that you really don’t need a gaming rig for them.

I don’t like arcade or graphic based PC games. I miss the good old days of Infocom style text adventures like the Zork series or Suspended.

I cut my IT teeth on programming text adventures. That’s how I got involved in programming. I had a Vic20, was so impressed with a game that could let me input text and it responded to my desires, that I had to learn how to do it myself.

My first text adventure, written for the Vic20 was called “Midway” and you had one hour to find a bomb that was fixing to blow up one of the major attractions on the carnival midway. It was written in Commodore Basic and fit in 3.5k.

The second text adventure I wrote was called “Encounter” and it was a encounter with a UFO adventure, written for the C64. If you look hard enough, you can still find a rom image of it on some archival sites.

If you have a C64 emulator, find it and enjoy.

I was down with the Infocom games! I didn’t have a C64 as a kid, I had it’s competitor, the 8-bit Atari computer. I had Planetfall, Stationfall, and a whole bunch of Atari ST/Amiga era text adventures like Jinxter, The Pawn, Guild of Thieves… all of which were practically impossible because they were british and sort of relied on a certain familiarity with British culture and jokes that my 12 year old brain didn’t have. I started getting into computer games right around when the Sierra games were becoming big, so lots of Kings Quest, Space Quest, etc as well.

There;s actually an entire subculture of people who still make text adventures, they call them ‘interactive fiction” now, and there’s toolkits and parsers to make them and run them on about any machine imaginable.

There;s actually an entire subculture of people who still make text adventures, they call them ‘interactive fiction” now, and there’s toolkits and parsers to make them and run them on about any machine imaginable.

I did it the old fashion way… coded it from scratch… with a parsing subroutine that took all the possible inputs, check where you were, what you had at the moment, and when you could go… decided if you could do something, set all the need flags in memory… and you were on your way to your next move.

Had subroutines that would fire “random” events. I love to build the “I don’t know what you mean” parser… you start building in all kinds of snide comebacks to stupid and snide input. A foul language parser… “Say that one more time and you will be sorry” and the games suddenly aborts… it makes you feel like a little god, manipulating all that stuff.

I know Infocom pioneered the text adventure engine, it was something that could run on most 8 bit platforms of the time, with little modification.

Well, if you have the inclination, then download a C64 emulator and get that ROM image of “Encounter.” You will see my first attempts at parsing out the foul language… that is so funny… because that’s just what I did with Infocom games. Sounds AWESOME!

Bureaucracy is an interactive fiction computer game released by Infocom in 1987, scripted by popular comic science fiction author Douglas Adams. The player is challenged to confront a long and complicated series of bureaucratic hurdles resulting from a recent change of address. Mail isn’t being delivered, bank accounts are inaccessible, and nothing is as it should be. The game includes a measure of simulated blood pressure which rises when “frustrating” events happen and lowers after a period of no annoying events. Once a certain blood pressure level is reached, the player suffers an aneurysm and the game ends. While undertaking the seemingly simple task of retrieving misdirected mail, the player encounters a number of bizarre characters, including an antisocial hacker, a paranoid weapons enthusiast, and a tribe of Zalagasan cannibals. At the same time, he or she must deal with impersonal corporations, counterintuitive airport logic, and a hungry llama.

This is the best part:

According to Adams, the premise of the game was inspired by a real-life experience. Before moving from one address to another in London, Adams filled out several change-of-address forms, including one he submitted in person at his bank. Shortly after settling into his new apartment, he found that his credit card no longer worked. The bank had invalidated his current card and sent a new one to his old address. Adams spent weeks trying to get the bank to correct its mistake, filling out several new forms and talking to several bank officials. The bank finally sent a letter apologizing for the inconvenience; naturally, it was sent to his old address.

As we head down the slippery slope to fascism in the US, remember this:

Aldous Huxley, the novelist and word-man among the great Huxley family, saw it coming.

Why is it that authors with bad eyesight (viz. Homer, Joyce) always seem to see the most clearly?

Huxley saw and detailed the rise of pre-WWII British Fascism in his great novel Point, Counterpoint. He would have spotted Robert Spencer for what he is in less than a heartbeat.

And when his “hero” Maurice Spandrell dies at the hands of the “Brotherhood of British Freemen” (otherwise known as Orcs, in Tolkien’s lexicon, now reincarnated in real life as the “English Defense League”, whose puds Pamz sucks for love, not money), this is playing in the background.

Beethoven, string quartet no. #15, “Heiliger Dankgesang eines Genesenen an die Gottheit, in der lydischen Tonart” (Holy Song of Thanks to the Deity, in the Lydian Mode).

Beethoven scratched out the name of Napoleon, to whom he originally dedicated his Third Symphony, with such vehemence that there’s a hole in the MS.

Let us do likewise to the New Fascists.

Ok Walter - how do you feel about Abandonware?

As they put it, “I leave the morality of downloading a 1987 game, written by a dead author, that you cannot buy anymore from a company that no longer exists, up to you.”

If you’re ok by that:

Interesting story I found while perusing Cracked:
Traffic stop video on YouTube sparks debate on police use of Md. wiretap laws

A week later, on March 10, Graber posted his video of the encounter on YouTube. What followed wasn’t a furor over the police officer’s behavior but over Graber’s use of a camera to capture the entire episode.

There’s an expectation of privacy during a traffic stop on a highway exit? Huh.

See also: Are Cameras the New Guns?

In response to a flood of Facebook and YouTube videos that depict police abuse, a new trend in law enforcement is gaining popularity. In at least three states, it is now illegal to record any on-duty police officer.

Even if the encounter involves you and may be necessary to your defense, and even if the recording is on a public street where no expectation of privacy exists.

and of course as a kid, what’s the first thing I did when I sat down at a new text adventure? Fired off every foul thing I could think of to see if the game would recognize it.

I could never get into coding, tried multiple times, no head for it. So I wound up being the graphics guy for my friends’ game projects in high school, entering pixel art coordinates by hand using graph paper. We animated a character for a game, six fame walk cycle, every pixel was entered into a data file as a coordinate. TOOK SO LONG

The early Ataris had ‘sprites’ that were basically a group of pixels that could be manipulated as a unit and ‘paged’ to look animated.

There is a shred of truth in what the Lt. Governor said. Just a shred. For example Abu Hamza the British terrorist used the line of defense in court that inciting people to commit violence against Jews was just him expressing his freedom of Religion. The Brits laughed him out of Court thankfully but the point is, One man’s expression of freedom of religion can not violate another person’s freedom. Its worthwhile to make that clear.

James Taranto’s Best of the web has a funny punny!

We Demand the Berth Certificate!
“Sen. John Kerry, who has repeatedly voted to raise taxes while in Congress, dodged a whopping six-figure state tax bill on his new multimillion-dollar yacht by mooring her in Newport, R.I.,” the Boston Herald reports:

Could the reason be that the Ocean State repealed its Boat Sales and Use Tax back in 1993, making the tiny state to the south a haven—like the Cayman Islands, Bermuda and Nassau - for tax-skirting luxury yacht owners?

Cash-strapped Massachusetts still collects a 6.25 percent sales tax and an annual excise tax on yachts. Sources say Isabel sold for something in the neighborhood of $7 million, meaning Kerry saved approximately $437,500 in sales tax and an annual excise tax of about $70,000.

Kerry’s chief of staff, the delightfully named David Wade, denies that the haughty, French-looking former junior senator, who by the way served in Vietnam, chose the out-of-state berth for tax reasons.

The concept of separaration of Church and State is nonsense in some but not all Nations where Islam is the majority Religion. Look at the Governments that the USA has helped establish in Afghanistan and Iraq in the last few years. 528 Why I Never!  Tue, Jul 27, 2010 1:30:52am

When it comes to delineating the difference between religion and cult, I always think of Chomsky’s remarks about the difference between a language and a dialect:
A religion is a cult with an army.
vs
A language is a dialect with an army.

This doesn’t have to mean anything about actual armies, btw, this is just the point that the numbers determine what is a ‘language’ vs what is a ‘dialect’, and so too with religion. The cult of Isis in the roman empire shared many commonalities with early Christianity, and both were treated as cults. Both are mystery religions (in the technical sense of ‘mystery religion’); both afforded Roman women equality in a way they were not permitted in ‘official’ religions— one has survived. The believers will say it is because one is ‘the real thing’, but in reality, it is always about the numbers. Just as the victors write the history books, so too does that apply in the history of religion books.

BTW, the dynamics of the faiths in the time period you mention is an interesting tale. There is no such thing like it today. The closest would be the split of Episcopalians over homosexuals.
