CPAC 2011, Day 2

The place is lousy with creationists
Wingnuts • Views: 37,601

C-SPAN has a live video feed from CPAC; today’s schedule includes creationist Republican Tim Pawlenty at 3 pm Eastern, followed by creationist libertarian Ron Paul at 3:30. At 4 pm, creationist Republican Rick Perry will speak, followed by creationist libertarian Herman Cain at 4:30.

Also at 3 pm, anti-Muslim bloggers Robert Spencer and Pamela Geller will be hosting an “unofficial CPAC event,” a preview of their cheesy new propaganda film:

The Ground Zero Mosque: The Second Wave of the 9/11 Attacks – Maryland Ballroom Sponsored by the American Freedom Defense Initiative (1.5 hours) Speakers: Pamela Geller, Robert Spencer, 9/11 Family Members, Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf and Daisy Khan (invited), plus a special screening of a trailer for the new AFDI documentary, The Ground Zero Mosque: The Second Wave of the 9/11 Attacks

And again, they show their complete lack of class; after waging a year-long campaign of hate speech and incitement against them, Spencer and Geller list Imam Rauf and his wife Daisy Khan as “(invited).”

“Parents should be warned and frankly the authorities at CPAC should be told that there are minor age students who need to be looked after and protected. Have the Radical Homosexuals really infiltrated that deeply into what used to be a pro-family movement? Has the leadership of CPAC gone so far as to actually not read anything or think it’s just “political opinion” propagated by old fashioned and outdated leaders that adult homosexual predators exist? Well, they DO exist and they are taking advantage of the alcohol parties at CPAC to poison the minds and pollute the bodies of young conservatives who are still too naïve to know what is being done to them,” - Eugene Delgaudio, President of the Public Advocate of the U.S., warning about GOProud in a fundraising email.

What are the “minor age students” doing at the “alcohol parties”? I submit that alcohol is much more dangerous than gay people.

i doubt minors will be at “alcohol parties”. the letter is to scare people. homosexuals will ply your children with alcohol and make them gay at cpac. that’s how they create more gay people don’t ya know.

Gah. (OT)

Picked up a local paper and the Archdiocese of Philadelphia is named in a set of grand jury charges.

(CBS/AP) Two Roman Catholic priests, a former priest and a Catholic school teacher in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia were charged Thursday with raping young boys, while a former high-ranking church official was accused of transferring problem priests to new parishes without warning anyone of prior sex-abuse complaints.

The charges stemmed from a two-year grand jury investigation into priest abuse in the archdiocese, the second such inquiry in Philadelphia.

In a rare, if not unprecedented, move, the grand jury charged Monsignor William Lynn with endangering children in his role as secretary for clergy under former Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua.

Bryan Fischer isn’t falling for it.

Palin: stance on GOProud, CPAC raises pro-family questions

Ms. Palin told David Brody of CBN that having representatives of the deviancy cabal sitting at the table and helping to choose speakers is just fine. She said it’s an example of “conservatives…reach(ing) out to others” and that GOProud’s participation is needed to “provide good information and balance, and…allow for healthy debate.”

But unfortunately, GOProud isn’t being invited to participate in a panel discussion over whether homosexual behavior is benign or a menace to human and social health. That would be one thing. They (GOProuders) instead are official participants, and thus granted license by organizers to use CPAC as a venue to promote their dangerous sexual agenda.

Ms. Palin’s statement on the subject was a bit meandering but left no doubt that she has no reservations about advocates of sexual abnormality being given a prominent place at a so-called conservative event.

Perhaps Ms. Palin doesn’t understand GOProud’s role at CPAC. If so, she can walk these comments back when she finds out. Of greater concern is that she may well understand GOProud’s agenda, and its mission of destroying the institution of marriage through redefinition, and may still think it’s a wonderful idea to give them an honored place.

Guess Who’s Coming to CPAC?
GOProud has taken the conservative and LGBT movements by storm by being brash, loud and uncompromisingly conservative — and just as uncompromisingly gay

i can’t say that i completely understand their politics, but i don’t have to. one thing is for sure. they are not self-loathing as i first assumed. they appear quite fond of themselves.

from link:

Barron sums up his debates with LCR, with the left, with everyone, saying, ”I understand that many of us want to get to the same destination, the same place, where sexual orientation just doesn’t matter. And there are a lot of different paths to get there. And the fact that we have staked out one that nobody has been on before doesn’t make that path any less legitimate.”

At CPAC yesterday, ThinkProgress caught up with Norquist — whose wife is Muslim — and asked him to respond to Gaffney and the general Muslim fearmongering from the right. “It’s very important to recognize that each of these faiths is completely consistent with the U.S. Constitution and a free and open society,” Norquist said, adding it’s also important “for the conservative movement to have many doors open.” He said that the right has to “marginalize” Islamophobia within its ranks and “knock that stuff down and just make it clear that there’s no place for that in the party of Reagan.”

I work with taxes all the time, and I have my FIL handle mine since he’s a tax preparer. I’ve prepared my taxes before, but that’s usually with Turbo Tax.

The tax code, with all the credits, deductions, exemptions, and other limitations and changes is simply too complex to try a paper return and sometimes it just takes an outside preparer to make sure that you have all your paperwork in order.

That’s billions of dollars a year that is spent on tax preparation that could otherwise be spent on more productive uses.

Simplification could go a long way to reducing the burden to prepare returns - and improve compliance (a huge issue, particularly with things like the EITC for personal tax returns and other more complex item on the corporate side like NOLs).

re: #178 lawhawk

Sorry, not going to go down the political road, I think even if the tax code were simple, I’d still get it done, I have too many sources of freelance income, too many weird deductions, blah blah home office blah blah equipment depreciation

Basically, I spend a couple hundred bucks on getting taxes done a year, honestly it’s a lot cheaper than routine car maintenance :D it would have to be flat-tax simple to truly be “simple” in the way you describe

It may sound a little silly on my part but I think you gotta give Gorbachev credit too. He was totally different than Brezhnev, Andropov, and Chernenko. Guy was a fairly young man when things like the Hungarian Uprising, Prague Spring, happened rather than the other three guys who came of age and education during the Stalin years. I am glad things ended the way they did but I don’t think Reagan would have had as much success if he was dealing with Yuri Andropov, former KGB director and ambassador to Hungary circa 1956 as opposed to Mikhail Gorbachev, grandson of a gulag prisoner.

Off Topic (or is it?) Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker promises to break out the troops against the other government employees if people protest against his budget. I wonder if his salary is cut?

ov. Scott Walker says he is confident state workers will continue to show up for work and do their jobs, despite their potential disappointment in his emergency budget proposal.

However, if there is worker unrest, Walker says the Wisconsin National Guard is prepared to respond.

After all, nothing says break out the troops more than union busting

“We are out of money and the options are few. We can either raise taxes — which is absolutely off the table — reduce spending or lay off workers,” Jeff Fitzgerald, the Republican Speaker of the State Assembly, told local radio.

“I expect the Capitol to explode” with protests, Fitzgerald said. “It’s going to be a very difficult week.”

State employee unions made $100 million in concessions in December, but Walker’s response has been “to eviscerate our most basic rights” and “end labor peace in Wisconsin,” said Bryan Kennedy

Why in the hell is raising taxes off the table? Oh wait, that’s right, It’s a Republican, they think the government can run on moonbeams and pixie dust.

re: #272 RadicalModerate

Could someone please parse what Ron Paul just said on CNN? What I heard was two completely contradictory statements. First, it was a mistake to send aid to Egypt, and should end all foreign aid (including non-military). Then says that we should be friends and support them.

He’s also predicting that the next leader of Egypt will be a dictator, elections be damned.

That’s pretty much what he said.

Sending money all the money was a waste as in terms of an investment. A lot of it ended up in Swiss bank accounts. It also ended up funding the military which wasn’t there to protect the state but Mubarak. Ends up supporting a dictator and then look what happened. Said no need for foreign aid anywhere especially in these economic times.
Said we can be friends, trade and whatnot but forget the aid.

Also said US should butt out and not interfere with what going on. Said the CIA is probably already looking for new guys to put in power and support. Shouldn’t do that, Egyptians don’t want it…causes trouble down the road. Said he believes that the odds of having another dictator are good but especially if the US interferes like it has before. Butt out and less chance of a dictator.

304 RadicalModerate  Fri, Feb 11, 2011 1:47:59pm

Since all the people there are such fiscal conservatives, I wonder if anyone at CPAC asked Governor Perry why he didn’t address the $20Billion budget deficit in the emergency legislative session he called, but did find space on the docket for restrictive abortion-rights legislation, a voter ID bill that disenfranchises minorities, and Texas’ version of Arizona’s “Papers Please” legislation.

After all, they’re all about fiscal policy there.

Wow, this won’t sit well with the rightwing talking points. That big Republican wave of support that they have been crowing about?

Gone.

Latest polling has “generic” congressional Democrats polling ahead of Republicans for the first time in several months - an eleven point shift since the November elections.

GOP Honeymoon over

Beyond Boehner’s numbers the most amazing thing on our poll this week is that not only are Democrats back ahead on the generic Congressional ballot by a 45-41 margin, but they’re ahead by a 38-31 margin with independents! That’s a quite change from what we saw over the course of 2009 and 2010. The four point lead for Democrats on the generic ballot represents an 11 point shift from the November elections and there were more than 40 districts that Democrats lost by that margin or less so if we went to the polls today under the current district configuration it’s entirely possible Democrats would get their House majority right back. Of course redistricting will give Republicans some opportunities to shore things up for themselves but at any rate the honeymoon, such as it ever was, looks to be over.

I think the problem with the concept of capitalism, as it is generally discussed in politics today, is that it is often invoked as it it were equivalent to trade in the private sector, and functioning markets.

Just about every country in the world has functioning markets. That doesn’t mean that pure capitalism is a good idea.

Yeah, because the people in Egypt were all hunky-dory with Mubarak and didn’t have any reason at all to want him gone. Only commies and rent-a-crowds would think to protest.

Socialist communist extremist islam and community organizers eg THE GOOGLE GUY

THE GOOGLE GUY IS A COMMUNITY ORGANIZER— it’s imperative that you understand how this community organizing works.

“Community organizing is the key. These countries have the Muslim Brotherhood. Google executive admits that he’s putting it altogether. The most important aspect to understand is that this is not spontaneous and it will cascade throughout the middle east. I hope to God not but I bet it touches Europe and then the world. It will not have a singular ideology but it will mean revolution, destruction and change. And it will be led by young people (said in an ominous tone) because anyone over thirty knows that chaos doesn’t usually lead any place good.

Take the President at his election promise. Here he is on the campaign trail. —-clip Obama “If you’ll stand with me. And fight by my side. And cast your ballot for me I will promise you this. We will not just win Missouri, we will win the general election and together we will change this country and change the world.——

We’re changing the world and you are being intentionally mislead. It shows the bias people have. Yes tehre is a dictator out of power but what are we trading it for. They are ignoring any possible threat to what Egypt may turn into, they are constantly on the look out for Tea Party rhetoric and violence except they won’t look into violent rhetoric and ACTUAL calls for violence and revolution in America. (ppoints to a bunch of picture on a blackboard). It doesn’t make sense. But it does if you know who is running our intelligence community….”

There’s a very important and rather bizarre story out of Wisconsin today. And one we’re going to be watching closely. New Gov. Hey everyone. I was thrilled when I heard Mubarak fell between classes. Anyway, I was hearing that the next three to watch are Algeria, Yemen, and Jordan. Of them, Yemen and Algeria have had a miserable history since independence.

Part of Yemen was occupied by Egypt during the North Yemen Civil War in the 1960’s, with the conflict overall killing somewhere between 100k-150k. When North and South Yemen unified in the 90’s another war broke out, killing a further 7,000 to 10,000. As of right now, there are three civil conflicts racking that nation, having killed at least 6,300 people.

Algeria’s history is about as miserable. Their war of independence from France killed 1 million people. Then, in mid-90’s another war started as a response to the nullification of a election Islamists won. That Civil War killed 150k-200k people. Since the war’s end in 2002, their has been an insurgency which has killed thousands more.

Along those lines, news related to CPAC:

Tom Tancredo: Muslim Immigrants Spread Sharia Law

But former Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo upped the ante even further. Speaking to Mother Jones on Friday after his CPAC speech, he warned that Muslim immigrants would never be able to assimilate and posed a perilous threat by bringing Sharia law to America:

[…] Then you got the issue of Muslim immigration. In every other case I’ve described, you can assimilate. If you come here as an atheist or a Christian or a Jew or a Hindu—there’s no inherent…conflict between that person and what it means to be an American, because the Constitution is the kind of document that wraps up all up.

But what do you do with people coming for the purpose of advancing sharia law, which is not compatible in any way with the constitution of the United States? How do you deal with that? That’s another very scary thing because demographically the numbers are on their side.

Tancredo’s warnings echoed recent efforts by right-wingers to ban sharia law in states like Oklahoma, and he drove home the link between immigrants, deadly crime, and terrorism in his CPAC speech as well—going so far as to equate open borders with treason. “Plenty of people coming across that border want to do very bad things to us—we know it’s been an entry point for terrorists. Why would that not be a cause for impeachment? I think it’s treasonous to not secure your border,” he told the crowd, to wild applause. Tancredo also denounced multiculturalism and ethnic enclaves as “the dagger pointed at the heart of Western civilization.”

Asked whether President Obama was encouraging such freedom-crushing Muslim separatism, Tancredo told Mother Jones, “Yeah, I certainly believe [it].” He also agreed that Obama shared his Kenyan father’s anti-colonial views—a theory originally promulgated by conservative writer Dinesh D’Souza.

To prove his point, Tancredo pointed to a bust of Winston Churchill on loan to the White House during the Bush years that the Obama adminstration returned to the British embassy. “Remember that bust of Winston Churchill? They sent this bust back to the British…because [Obama] considers them to be colonial powers. These are our best allies, you know.” (Tancredo also told reporters that in Egypt, Obama’s “schizophrenic” positions had increased the threat to the US. “No matter what happens now, we lose. No matter what, whether Mubarak steps down, whether he stays… ElBaradei’s worse.”)

You should see the uproar going on here in Austin right now with the local school district threatening to close a bunch of schools to save money due to the state budget shortfall. People are pissed.

At the same time, our idiot governor and Republican legislature are more concerned with passing an “emergency” abortion bill or some such nonsense. Ugh.

Along those lines, news related to CPAC:

Tom Tancredo: Muslim Immigrants Spread Sharia Law

I asked this when Dinesh D’Souza said it but what is so bad about being anti-colonial? Do Tancredo or D’Souza realize we fought for and gained our independence from the world’s greatest colonial power? Tancredo keeps on proving himself to be a racist tool. The guy is a bigot pure and simple.

I never thought I’d see a governor openly relishing sic-ing the military on state workers, but this is the bestial nature of people, good times

I read the stories on the WI budget dealings and got the impression that the governor was talking about using the WING to help cover public safety (and other) positions in case of a general strike, not to use the WING against the strikers.

Correct me if I’m wrong…

Livid is putting it mildly. Folks are organizing and going to school district meetings and events to get their voices heard. I’ve seen yard signs and placards all over the place protesting the closure of one of the elementary schools in my area. It’s been around for over 60 years and has always rated highly, but it’s on the chopping block. And that’s just for one school out of the 15 or so they’re threatening to close.

I’ve been here since 1998 and have never seen anything like it.

Well what I don’t get is that it’s D’Souza the son of Indian immigrants who originated this nonsense. I agree it’s racial but it’s just weird that D’Souza whose parents no doubt lived under British colonial rule would act like this. Honestly, I think it’s pathetic really. Fake Palin shows up at CPAC, confusing some onlookers

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin won’t show up at CPAC this year.
But the fake Sarah Palin did.

A woman, who looked and dressed like the famous Republican, started walking around and doing interviews. In fact, she began drawing a crowd. People requested pictures, asked questions, and expressed their support for her.
Mumbles of mixed reactions buzzed through the crowd about her legitimacy. One person said, “That’s not the real Palin,” while another said, “You bet. That is real, legitimate Palin.” Another mentioned checking her latest Twitter status to verify whether or not it was her.

But a staff member escorting the woman around confirmed that, despite her similarity, this was not the real former governor.

Given how phony the “real” Palin is, I wonder how they could tell the difference.

Please understand, I’m not saying that Beck’s “theories” are anything other than cynical attempts to profit from Tea Partier hatred of Muslims and libz.

He sees it as a two-for-one deal — build on hatred of two groups so that he can capitalize on an historic event and turn an incredibly hopeful moment into an opportunity to exploit fear.

I highly doubt that Beck has ever heard of the folks referred to in the link. His linkage of Islamists to socialists/communists/leftists is just a grab bag of boogeymen that he can lump together to promote fear. It doesn’t EVER need to have any connection to reality. Maybe, but this would be unprecedented. The Alouites have been the leaders of that nation for over 300 years. In fact, the ancestor of the current king was the first to recognize the United States after our declaration. Also, they have shown themselves, at least to this point, more willing to change and listen to there people.

I still say that Morocco is near the bottom of the list, with Algeria and Yemen being the next. Jordan maybe after that.
