“over enthusiastic gardening”

pretty sure I don’t want to know details.

Pro-tip:

Never, EVER, question the lengths an Englishman will go to improve their garden. If that old tree trunk needs to come out and all you’ve got is a shooter shovel, dammit! it’s coming out! And if you rip out a glute trying to do it, by God you’ve given your best!

Really, the English are not like us when it comes to horticulture. They are fanatics. Truly.

Hilarious, but I can easily see my brother-in-law doing this in Bedfordshire, then saying “I’ll be fine, not to worry, just a bit of bother. Give me a week and I’ll get that bastard out of the ground.”

I think it’s encouraging to see both-siderist pap from the media about lack of accountability for Republicans six months before the election where (hopefully) Trump and the Republicans will get their asses royally kicked.

They only do this when it looks like their precious Republican party is going to lose.

In a rational world, you don’t have to be partisan to recognize what a fucking mess this maladministration caused

I’m still of the mind that when trump loses, you won’t be able to find any republican who voted for him in 2016 or 2020. He’s going to get memory holed

I don’t think it will be that simple, since Trump is a creature of the GOP base in a way that W Bush never was.

The GOP donor class would like to memory hole Trump, since they see their political hirelings as easily replaced tools, but for the base Trump is the motherfucking Pig of Destiny that has fully occupied the pigsty of racism, corruption and rampant stupidity the GOP has created for itself since the 1960s.

Some years ago, my bud Harvey and I almost hit a dump truck that pulled onto the runway in front of us as we were on final at Town and Country Airport in Lubbock. There was some kind of dirt work going on just to the right of the runway. I saw the truck turn and head toward the runway, then stop. When we were too low to safely turn away, the dumb fuck suddenly pulled right onto the runway. I thought oh shit, we’re going to hit him. We were in a Grumman Lynx, a small plane with a low wing and fixed landing gear. I was hoping we could catch it with just the gear and just possibly make a belly landing farther down the runway. Harv hit the throttle and our sink rate slowed just enough for us to miss the truck. I braced myself for the impact of the wheels hitting the truck. The wheels would have hit right on the driver’s cab. We must have missed it by inches. The sudden increase in engine noise no doubt got the driver’s attention, and scared him shitless, to say nothing of an airborne plane swooping by inches away. I hoped it did anyway. We reported it to the FAA and the airport manager. I never did find out the result. I could just imagine the headline: “3 dead in plane-dump truck collision.”

Shiplord Kirel, Friend of Moose and Squirrel  May 7, 2020 • 11:07:15pm

In Vietnam, vehicles, people, dogs, monkeys and water buffalo would wander heedlessly around the aircraft operating areas. The noise of a chopper could usually scare them off, so it was not a real risk to us, but the fixed wing troops were not so lucky and runway collisions did happen.

So, we had the Department of Justice turn into the Department of Just Us today.

The Executive Branch has decided to blame all of their failures in responding to Covid19 crisis on the Chinese.

They also plan to blame Obama and Biden for their incompetence.

When a new variant of the H1N1 virus hit us in 2009 (not a Novel Corona Virus, like this one, a variant of the 1918 virus which almost no one had old anti-bodies to fight) we instituted a carefully planned response which limited the death count in the US to (best guess) 12,469 deaths (cdc.gov).

In the last three days, we have had 6,017 deaths in the US. In the last month, we have had around 61,000 deaths.

Right now, our death total is pretty much linear.

worldometers.info

But “opening the country” is a huge gamble.

And it’s a gamble that politicians want to risk with other peoples’ lives.

My wife and I will not be going to movie theaters, restaurants, or any other businesses except for grocery stores where we need to buy food for the foreseeable future.

And you shouldn’t either.

When this pandemic is over, let’s avoid the partisan blame game, Mitch Daniels writes wapo.st

There’s a comment at that WaPo piece by Mitch Daniels that’s really good. I felt the need to share.

Where shall we start? Making fun of a handicapped journalist? Grabbing female parts? Asking Putin for help on video?

I blame you for abandoning what conservatives used to think our government and way of life meant by backing this horrible man.

I blame you for refusing to actually hold an impeachment trial.

I blame you for letting Mitch withhold a vote for Obama’s SCOTUS nomination because there was “only” a year and a half left of the 4 years the American voters awarded him.

I blame you for trying to scuttle, hamstring and end ACA without a single serious conversation of what might replace it.

I blame you for not even blinking when he told state governors they were on their own for PPEs and other medical supplies and then you allowed Kushner to seize them when they do.

I blame you for hearing him say clearly that only governors who begged and flattered him would get help.

I blame you for allowing him to whip up a white nationalist, anti government civil war from cold to hot over the last four years.

If he manages to perform a full on coup and not allow or honor a real election in November I will blame you all for that.

Mostly I blame you for non scientific, self serving swill like this “herd immunity” in Sweden nonsense. I blame you for pretending that our economy will magically heal itself when people are still afraid for their jobs and their health, there are roving shortages of common supplies and foods, hospitals and morgues are over run, workers are infecting each other on the job site and getting nothing but blame from your kind; for pretending all of this is fine as long as you can just push everyone off of unemployment and food stamps as quickly as possible while you bail out big business and give tax cuts to the rich and those who are still employed and healthy for now can go to the damn beach and get a hair cut.

You are all vile excuses for human beings without a shred of ethic or real morality and I spit on you.

Starting today, San Diego county is allowing retailers from florists to furniture stores to partially re-open, with curb-side service allowed.

I don’t know what curbside service means for a furniture store, but heh, if one can do it then I guess it’ll be a winner.

Same with jewelers. I can’t conceive of curb-side sales of jewelry, unless we’re talking about those guys with fake watches hanging inside of their trench coats.

This is so appalling:

‘What are we doing this for?’: Doctors are fed up with conspiracies ravaging ERs

At the end of another long shift treating coronavirus patients, Dr. Hadi Halazun opened his Facebook page to find a man insisting to him that “no one’s dying” and that the coronavirus is “fake news” drummed up by the news media.

Hadi tried to engage and explain his firsthand experience with the virus. In reply, another user insinuated that he wasn’t a real doctor, saying pictures from his profile showing him at concerts and music festivals proved it.

“I told them: ‘I am a real doctor. There are 200 people in my hospital’s ICU,’” said Halazun, a cardiologist in New York. “And they said, ‘Give me your credentials.’ I engaged with them, and they kicked me off their wall.”

“I left work and I felt so deflated. I let it get to me.”

Halazun, like many other health care professionals, is dealing with a bombardment of misinformation and harassment from conspiracy theorists, some of whom have moved beyond posting online to pressing doctors for proof of the severity of the pandemic.

And it’s taking a toll. Halazun said dealing with conspiracy theorists is the “second most painful thing I’ve had to deal with, other than separation of families from their loved one.

Several other doctors shared similar experiences, saying that they regularly had to treat patients who had sought care too late because of conspiracy theories spread on social media and that social media companies have to do more to counteract the forces that spread lies for profit.

One of the forces in question: THE FUCKING PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES!

And on that note, of course it gets worse:

Dr. Duncan Maru, a physician and epidemiologist in Queens, New York, said he had heard from colleagues that a young patient had come into the emergency room last week with damage to his intestinal tract after having ingested bleach. The incident occurred just days after President Donald Trump suggested that “injection” of disinfectants should be researched as a potential coronavirus treatment.

I highly recommend reading the whole thing and maybe keeping something handy to smash to pieces afterwards.

The primary ‘Soft’ frame being pushed is ‘we have to get back to work.’ This narrative doesn’t push conspiracy theories but relies on fallacy and dissonance by focusing only on near term economics. It’s the ‘easy’ narrative to push when you want to push for returning to normal. It’s still insidious.

Fuck Trump, Fuck the GOP, and fuck his enablers in Trumpworld. (Oh, and greets and saluts from the NYC metro area!)

Trump’s conspiracy craziness is up to 11 this morning, precisely because this morning his own government is releasing the official unemployment rate for the past month, and it will be the absolute worst on record. Unemployment rate officially hit 14.7%, which is the worst since the Great Depression. The Trump Collapse is official. And as the Minnesota Fed chair has indicated, the true rate is probably closer to 20% because it’s not capturing all the gig economy jobs that vaporized too.

He destroyed the US economy within 6 weeks. That’s it. It took him six weeks to absolutely and totally fuck the economy over in ways few could have contemplated. His failures to act have reverberated throughout the economy, the health care system and it’ll persist long after Trump leaves.

He’s done more damage in less time than anyone else in our history.

And the recovery wont be immediate, or even complete by the end of the year. That’s just wishful thinking from Trumpists and economists who ignore that once a business goes under, it’s not coming back and those jobs aren’t coming back.

It also doesn’t even begin to take into account the massive disruption to the retail real estate and retail market as brick and mortar sees businesses that were already faltering collapse entirely, and resulting in a huge increase in vacancies, which has a ripple effect that will ultimately also affect the stock market too.

The economy especially won’t be able to recover quickly because a vaccine probably won’t be ready for mass inoculation until 2022, and that is being optimistic. We are going to go through many waves of infections and death, which will keep economic activity sputtering at a low level.

Trump knows that if he tries this, Biden will have an ad with Trump’s baseball team number of accusers.

Yeah, Trump’s response was (quite uncharacteristically) pretty logical: sex-related accusations are probably the last thing he wants to get out into public discussion; though I’m sure Trump’s team will find enough other sewage to pump out into the campaign…

BTW: (vis dKos) an interesting take on the Tara Reade flap from Laura McGann at Vox (a reporter to whom Reade has been flogging her story for a year): The agonizing story of Tara Reade. Though just in my personal analysis, the only real “agonizing” seems to be in Ms. McGann’s reluctance to call bullshit on Tara’s tall tale: RTWT, YMMV (as they say…..)

To me, the core of the “accusation” against former-VP Biden is that, basically, he is a product of a different era with considerably different attitudes towards (what we now recognize and condemn as) “sexual harassment” - and gender-related behavior in general - though by, say, Bob Packwood standards, Joe has been a thorough gentleman, regardless.

The markets care only about making money and the expectations were met. In any other universe, the markets would collapse on the news that 10% of the jobs in the country vaporized and wont return anytime soon. They see meeting the expectation as a positive result.

No doubt there is a component of destruction required in authoritarianism. The concept of ‘the people’ needs to be remodeled dramatically. I’ve been in construction biz for 30+ years and I’m struck by the analogy of a minor remodel vs a full gut vs a complete demo/bulldozer (which isn’t a remodel). Much of authoritarianism cannot be based on a foundation of education, empowerment, of/for/by the people. That all needs to go away. One of the best ways to achieve that is to destroy truth itself. Disinformation and conspiracy are extremely effective at that. Lies don’t need to convince you their true: they’re still effective if they wear you down and you DGAF any more.

Even though we assumed a Hillary presidency, We knew someday this was gonna happen way back when that happened.

However, without the absolute control over the Senate a GOP Majority (and a Mitch McConnell Leadership) provides, confirming/not conforming a SCOTUS nomination isn’t going to be the same thing. Moscow Mitch’s disgraceful shelving of the Garland nomination was, well, a disgrace: but it’s unlikely to be able to be repeated. Except, of course, in the tragic instance of a sudden vacancy between now and the election.
Just a prediction: I think Justice Ginsburg is going to hang on until after the election, and submit her resignation to (what we fervently hope will be) President Biden soon after he’s sworn in (or RBG finishes up her final caseload). And outside of a classic stand-in-the-well-of-the-Senate-reading-the-phonebook type of filibuster, there will probably not be a lot the GOP can do to derail her replacement’s nom.
I’m sure they will try, but I’m guessing there is going to be a way lower level of toleration for these sort of shenanigans in the next session. And most likely, said shenanigans quashed by rules old McTurtle put in himself….

Seems to be doing fine on her own.

So far. But she is 87 years old, and not in the best of health. I’m sure, like so many other SCOTUS Justices, RBG is going to leave the Court either on her own terms, or the Grim Reaper’s. But her seat is going to be vacant sooner rather than later: and it really IS a matter of the gravest importance that that vacancy NOT be filled by anyone selected by Donald Trump.

It’s been Alex Jones’ business model from day one. I wish people who watch and listen to Infowars would realize that Alex, Paul Joseph Watson, and all these scam artists don’t give two shits about you. They care about using your fear and worries about uncertain times to enrich themselves and their brands. Conspiracy bullshit spread in Germany after WWI just like it has spread in Russia under Putin. We want easy answers to complex realities.

I’m struck by the concept of Infotainment as stated by Ailes when questioned about journalism. Talk about walking up and seeing the problem then shrugging and walking away. InfoWars, Limbaugh, all can hide behind the shield of Infotainment when scrutiny is applied and once removed, act as a reliable and objective source again. Or, everybody is biased, don’t you want to be on the winning biased team? One is not encumbered by the rules when you operate on the fringes of them, stepping outside when convenient only to step back inside when it’s safe.

There’s an old saying about camel’s nose in a tent because the whole camel will soon be inside. This applies to the early days of Limbaugh up and through CNN’s ‘paid commentators’ who were political party surrogates. The camel is most definitely in the tent.

This crisis has revealed social disparities as well.

It revealed the underlying class war quite clearly since it’s very hard to truly pin COVID-19 on the “other” trying to take your job.

Blaming China is simply deflection and any conservative with a lick of sense knows this as well and is simply using it as a excuse to continue voting conservative since for the most part they like the policies - and have no experience of what it was like to live in the late 1800s and not be of the upper class.

It’s been a cold Spring here in Va so far. Only a few days of what I call shorts weather. I wore a t-shirt, hoodie, & jeans when I walked the dog yesterday. Usually it’s 70-75 regularly by now. Not now. I guess that’s not the worst thing since people aren’t rushing outside yet. Seeing other families as I walk which is fine. I give em distance tho.

It’s been a relatively cold and wet spring. Some of the local plants seem to have liked it. I think due to there not having been a real frost here since sometime in February I think.

I estimated by swag that about 20% of the jobs just lost would not come back under any circumstances. For myriad reasons.

I think a lot of people are going to cut back from public group locations for an extended period of time - and that’s going to hit a lot of service industry jobs for an extended period of time. All the local restaurants, etc. could fully reopen right now and I’d not enter one anyways.

And there will be some long-lasting social behavior changes as well. I think the isolation thing has extended understanding/use of social media communities to a large number of older people who otherwise wouldn’t use it. And on-line education and remote working for jobs got a bit shot in the arm out of necessity. It will be interesting if it blossoms further from there.*

* - And on-line education will have a marked negative effect on university-oriented in-person social organizations such as fraternities and sororities.

The University of Pittsburgh toes that line as well. Claims to be a public university when that is the beneficial tack to take and then switches to claiming to be a private university when other challenges appear. It’s a “state-related” university and thus has this hybrid public-private status.

I worked with hierarchical DBs a bit in the late 80s at the USDA as a contractor. Very robust, but also very picky. And nowhere as flexible as the relational DBs once there was memory and computing power enough to implement them efficiently.

(My databases class in 1985 at Pitt was primarily book work. So computer work with a hierarchical system on the DEC-10 mainframe. The relational DB work was all on paper. It did get put to use later on since by 1991 the relational DBs were all over and I at least had a solid theoretical background on how to construct an efficient one.

I told someone once that the mid-80s was actually probably the worst time to get a Computer Science degree. A lot changed in a very short time after that; relational DBs, the PC revolution, the C language, and Moore’s Law really kicking in.)

“I do think it’s a monumental task to hold these companies to account, but in the COVID case, they truly have blood on their hands,” Maru said.

The “journalist” is clearly twisting Maru’s words in the first, unquoted, paragraph. Maru doesn’t say “tech platforms need to do more” he says “they truly have blood on their hands”. He talks about holding them to account. He’s not saying they’re incompetent, he’s saying they’re guilty.

re: #129 Jay C

If the GOP retains a Senate majority, I wouldn’t put it past McConnell to simply leave a vacancy on the Court for 4 years.

EXCLUSIVE: Rick Wilson Blasts ‘Typical F*ckery’ After Facebook Slaps Warning Label on Lincoln Project’s Anti-Trump Ad
Mediaite

You can read PolitFact’s analysis for yourself here, but the foundation of their argument is that some of the CARES Act funds did go to small businesses, so therefore saying “Trump bailed out Wall Street, but not Main Street” is worthy of a red-light alarm PolitiFact rating of FALSE.

But the ad doesn’t actually claim that small businesses received zero help. Rather, it makes the point that Main Street America is still seriously struggling as the economic fallout from the coronavirus pandemic continues.

How much you agree or disagree with the ad’s claim likely depends on how much you support or oppose Trump, but the bottom line is that it is a subjective, rather than an objective issue.

After PolitiFact’s rating, Facebook began taking punitive action against the Lincoln Project video, placing warning labels on the video, marking it as “Partly False.”

re: #192 retired cynic

and more:

This is a uniquely aggressive stance by Facebook. The social networking behemoth has previously taken a much more hands-off approach to political ads, with their own stated policy saying that “people should be able to hear from those who wish to lead them, warts and all, and that what they say should be scrutinized and debated in public.”

Unsurprisingly, Wilson was displeased with Facebook’s move.

Speaking exclusively to Mediaite, Wilson called the decision “the typical fuckery we’ve come to expect from both the Trump camp and their tame Facebook allies.”

“Facebook is perfectly content to allow content from QAnon lunatics, anti-vaxxers, alt-righters, and every form of Trump/Russian — but I repeat myself — disinformation,” he pointed out. “This is a sign of just how powerfully ‘Mourning In America’ shook Donald Trump and his allies. Their attempt to censor our ad isn’t a setback for us; it’s a declaration of an information war we will win.”

Jennifer Horn, former New Hampshire GOP chair and another Lincoln Project co-founder, pushed back hard against the accusation that the group’s ad was false. She sent Mediaite a long list of citations used to produce the ad and back up each claim, including articles published at Bloomberg Businessweek and Common Dreams making the same point: that small businesses across America have been devastated by the coronavirus pandemic, and the aid provided so far was wildly insufficient to sustain them.

“The Lincoln Project stands firmly behind every claim made in all of our ads,” said Horn, “including the devastating truths laid out in ‘Mourning in America.’ We will continue to take every available avenue to share the truth with the American people that the narcissistic, dangerous failures of this President have left America sicker, weaker and poorer.”

I want Trump’s fall to be ugly and for him to be afraid to ever show his fat face in public again.

I have to give the Lincoln guys credit. They’ve come to play. I just hope they acknowledge that they have some responsibility after this to build up a sane right of center because that needs to happen.

I liked the Lincoln Memorial Ad. Biden’s had some good ones too. Haven’t seen too many from Trump yet. I really think what I’ve been saying remains the truth. Trump when he’s not controlling the narrative is fucked. I think that’s why he wanted to smear and was unsuccessful with the Hunter Biden fishing expedition in Ukraine.

If I have to compare Wilson and his bunch to anyone, I would compare them to the Republicans that put aside partisan politics and helped Truman with foreign policy in the aftermath of WWII. I don’t want them shaping our ideology but I’m find with them going after Trump. I just hope they have learned something from Trump’s rise.

Yup. I know I’ve been complaining maybe too much about this, but the few conservatives I know are in Magic Balance Fairy mode, aka “It’s not just Trump, everyone’s to blame.”

IMO, the next shift will be “Pandemics happen, whaddya gonna do?” in order to cover for Trump further. That’s followed by “How dare you politicize this?” Which is all rationalization for voting for Trump again.

And, quite frankly, our idiot “independent” voters are probably thinking this way as well.

The economy especially won’t be able to recover quickly because a vaccine probably won’t be ready for mass inoculation until 2022, and that is being optimistic. We are going to go through many waves of infections and death, which will keep economic activity sputtering at a low level.

If there is a truly effective treatment that significantly shortens recovery time and prevents most deaths, that would be enough to open the economy.

Exactly. He’s no longer an empty slate. As for the sexism, it was how Trump despite being unqualified for the job got a total pass against someone who was. I do concede that it wasn’t the entire story though because of the email issue, Benghazi, and her being a polarizing figure.

Yeah, Trump’s response was (quite uncharacteristically) pretty logical: sex-related accusations are probably the last thing he wants to get out into public discussion; though I’m sure Trump’s team will find enough other sewage to pump out into the campaign…
……

Trump may be thinking of the E. Jean Caroll accusation, especially the demands for his DNA to be used as a sample to verify her story. This may be a situation where he really doesn’t want to promote the Biden charges because it would give more fuel to Caroll’s charges. Of course, that won’t stop social media from supporting Reade, but it might help in dampening the effects.

The thing is I think we sort of overestimate social media’s role. I think a lot of the “influences” are discovering that the skepticism directed towards the traditional media are and definitely should be directed their way. I’m definitely seeing it at the Intercept types who have shown their agenda in the Reade story exposed in real time.

What is the Streisland Effect?

In 2003, Streisand sued photographer Kenneth Adelman for distributing aerial pictures of her mansion in Malibu. But Adelman was no paparazzo—he operated the California Coastal Records Project, a resource providing more than 12,000 pictures of the California coast for scientists and researchers to use to study coastal erosion. At the time Streisand sued Adelman for $50 million, the picture in question had been accessed a whopping total of six times—twice by Streisand’s lawyers. Nonetheless, her lawsuit stated that the photos explicitly showed people how to gain access to her private residence.

Of course, news outlets around the world reported on Streisand’s outrage, and before long, the photo on Adelman’s website (below) had received well over a million views. The photo was also picked up by the Associated Press and was reprinted countless times.

I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of the “unresolved” cases are people who actually recovered. If someone is diagnosed but can be treated at home, the final results may never be reported for the official records.

The remaining Diamond Princess cases are somewhat troubling. This is an instance where people would actually be carefully tracked — and, after over 2 months, 54 cases remain active and 4 remain in serious/critical condition. So what does it take to be considered recovered?

The last update I remember was a couple of weeks ago, so I’ll accept those numbers.

There aren’t lots more cases because they were quarantined in time to limit the spread and because no matter what people say, a cruise ship is neither a packing plant nor a prison. Keeping your distance from your fellow cruisers isn’t as easy as locking yourself in your home and seeing no-one, but the long periods of time you need to infect someone (according to the latest reports) aren’t much of a problem if you know you need to do it.

re: #261 A hollow Gandalfian voice says, VOTE, you fools!

I wasnt clear
I’m talking total active cases versus recovered
1.2m vs 200k
It doesn’t seem like a lot of “recovered”

I think a lot of that falls out of the system. People don’t report. It’s question of followup, and whether health professionals are reporting recoveries as diligently as we would need for complete data.

I imagine it’s much harder to track “recovered.” And probably there’s a lot less incentive to do it.

Chester Count, PA COVID-19 stats:
Confirmed cases: 1770 (+54)
Total tests: 8275 (+254)
Deaths: 176 (+9)

3 of the deaths in the township just south of me. Which also saw a 0.04% increase in the confirmed cases there. (Townships population is ~10,000.) Makes me wonder if there has been an outbreak in a retirement community or apartment complex there. (There are two hospitals in the township, but do they report deaths in those based on the hospital address, or the home address of the patient?)

To make the van look full. More supplies to be delivered than there actually were.

Exactly. So whether Pence actually delivered empty boxes to the door we know that the stunt was fake. The van was filled with empty boxes to make it look impressive.

Israeli security firm Check Point Software Technologies traced a devastating new cyber-espionage tool to the Chinese military-affiliated Naikon hacker group. The Aria-body tool can be used to remotely hijack computers to copy, delete, or create files and sift through systems’ data, and to cover its tracks to thwart detection. Check Point determined Naikon had used Aria-body to infiltrate government agencies and state-owned technology companies throughout Asia and the Pacific. Aria-body also can penetrate any computer used to open the file in which it is embedded, and rapidly force the device to follow intruders’ commands—like establishing a secret, hard-to-detect line of communication by which data on the targeted system would flow to hacker-controlled servers. Aria-body also can render itself invisible by attaching itself to various types of files, leaving no set pattern of movement.

Doesn’t matter. Pence’s apologists are saying that the empty boxes are not the ones Pence was delivering. Ok, we don’t know, so give them that one. But Pence’s assistant told Pence that the other boxes were empty. There is no reason to have empty cardboard boxes in the van except to make the delivery look more impressive than it was. At some point they loaded the van up and someone said “damn, it’s half empty, best put some empty boxes in to make it look full”.

does it have to be said: because they dont have enough stuff to deliver

it was a stupid stunt anyway

a president ‘volunteering’ to stand in a food line dishing out food for an hour or so is not nothing

pushing a cart of boxes that we’re gonna be wheeled in anyway? what’s the point?

“Well, people in Hell want ice water too.”

THAT needs to be a national ad, on TV and the internet. Along with the WI SC judge saying that the COVID cases at the meat packing plant didn’t matter because those aren’t ‘regular people.’

There are plenty of quotes. Get their words out in public, all over the place, to the folks struggling to make their rent and put food on the table.
