Today in Trump Chaos: Trump Calls on Congress to Approve $2,000 Stimulus Checks, Hinting He Might Not Sign Relief Bill

Politics • Views: 21,062

Donald Trump is bent on causing as much chaos as possible during his lame duck months, and last night he threw the economic survival of millions of Americans and the government itself into doubt with a last minute tantrum: Trump calls on Congress to approve $2,000 stimulus checks, hinting he might not sign relief bill without changes.

The implications for what happens next could be severe. If he refuses to sign the bill, the government will shut down on Dec. 29. The $900 billion in emergency economic aid will be frozen, and the race for the two Senate seats in Georgia could also be upended.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), however, quickly responded to the Twitter post by saying congressional Democrats would move as soon as Thursday, when the House is scheduled to meet for a brief pro forma session, to advance the $2,000 stimulus checks.

“Republicans repeatedly refused to say what amount the President wanted for direct checks,” she posted on Twitter on Tuesday night after Trump’s message. “At last, the President has agreed to $2,000 — Democrats are ready to bring this to the Floor this week by unanimous consent. Let’s do it!”

Trump loves to contradict and humiliate his cronies to maintain dominance, and he’s doing it again — because the idea of $600 payments originally came from none other than his own treasury secretary, the execrable Steven Mnuchin.

I’ve been very vocal about my dissatisfaction with the original $600 direct payment plan, and it would be the height of Trumpian irony if he sabotages Mitch McConnell and gives the Democrats a chance to do something better for the American people.

But it’s unlikely that the Republican Senate will approve higher payments, because they evidently want people to suffer.

Giuliani told to preserve all records as lawyers for Dominion warn legal action is ‘imminent’

A defamation law firm representing Dominion Voting Systems has sent letters to White House counsel Pat Cipollone and President Donald Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani instructing them to preserve all records related to the company at the center of Trump’s conspiracy theories and warning Giuliani that legal action is “imminent.”

Through two well-known defamation attorneys, Dominion Voting Systems sent letters to Cipollone and Giuliani Tuesday, demanding Giuliani stop making “defamatory claims against Dominion” and ensure there is “no confusion about your obligation to preserve and retain all documents relating to Dominion and your smear campaign against the company.” The attorneys told Cipollone their preservation request is vast and includes conversations White House officials had with attorneys like Giuliani or Sidney Powell regarding Dominion.

“…Washington Post reporter Mike DeBonis confirmed that Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is planning the unanimous consent vote Christmas Eve, which will force Republicans to go on the record against mailing $2,000 checks to Americans. Considering that McConnell is hoping $600 checks will be enough to buy off Georgia voters on January 5, a vote against a more generous bill is clearly something Republican politicians likely hope to avoid.

In no way does this theory require believing Trump is crafty, clever, or heaven forbid, intelligent. Trump is a moron who is employing what he thinks is a clever Roy Cohn-style scheme to blackmail McConnell. It is, however, an idiotic misfire, because he’s trying to extort something McConnell simply doesn’t have, that is some deeply buried secret method to steal the election. “

Yeah…Trump isn’t working from any kind of principle, and the calculation of his competing drives to look good and exert power are opaque to the rest of us.

Whatever happens next it’s about a transaction he’s trying to set up: $2000 in exchange for…something…and he’ll veto if he doesn’t get his particular thing. For example, his focus on Section 230. But it’s also possible he’s doing a bigger version of a transaction, where he’s going to use “I tried to give you $2000” as leverage in his continued claims that he won.

There is a December 17th article that Trump wanted a stimulus check of at least $1200 and up to $2000 per person. So this is actually not a demand that came out of the blue — but was a policy he preferred, until he was talked out of it. But as you know, if Trump really wants something, any attempt to dissuade him will meet only with temporary success.

Trump’s still trying to steal an election he lost in a landslide. He still knows that he’s facing indictments and prosecutions from all his criminal conduct during and before his admin, and throw on the election interference felony conduct to that, and he’s got to get a better class of lawyers than he currently has around him.

In fact, all of his current crazy lawyers are looking at their own prosecutions and disciplinary conduct hearings in coming months. Wood, Rudy, Powell, and Ellis are all on the hook and the crime-fraud exception means that they can’t hide behind the attorney-client privilege to claim that they were just following orders of a criminal in furthering a criminal conspiracy. They are nominally officers of the court (as any lawyer who is admitted to the bar anywhere in the US as these four dumbasses are). That means they also have to uphold the rules of professional conduct and all four of these fucknuts have repeatedly violated the model rules and the rules of one or more states where they’ve served up these frivolous suits (filing frivolous suits are a de facto violation of the rules).

But Trump’s not playing 4d chess here. He’s sabotaging the compromise deal. There’s no way this is a winning issue for him or the GOP. The GOP refused to go along with any amount higher than $600. Heck, they had to be dragged kicking and screaming to do even that bare minimum. Now Trump’s showing that the GOP in Congress are the obstacle that Democrats always said that the GOP was. Heh.

GOP in disarray 2020. That should be a headline.

Oh, and there’s enough Trumpists going along with Trump here that the compromise deal might not get enacted because Trump might veto the bill and the override might get sabotaged by the likes of Rand Paul. If Paul and his fellow saboteurs can prevent any action until January 3, it’s over. The bill dies. The lame duck session ends and you need a new Congress to draft/pass a new bill, pushing the delays even further.

All the GOP does is sabotage functioning govt. That’s who they have been for decades.

That should be the headline.

I don’t think Trump is still trying to steal the election. He is trying to steal the spotlight, that fatal addiction. And of course, this is fueled by his rage at losing so much so fast so repeatedly. Mad at all his associates, allies (such as they are), and appointees. They failed him as shown by the losses.

Blackwater’s Youngest Victim
Note that the bereaved father, Mohammed Kinani, supported the US occupation and continued to support it after the massacre.

After Ali’s death, some of Mohammed’s friends came to him and asked him if the death had changed his attitude toward the Americans. It hadn’t, he told them. “I honestly separate distinctly between Blackwater and the American people and the American government,” he says. “I honestly love America and the American people. What happened to my family is totally isolated from the American people and government.”

He refused Blackwater’s settlement offer and pressed the case until the perpetrators were tried and sentenced to prison. His faith in American justice was completely vindicated.

Nope. Technically, Trump doesn’t even have to sign it. As long as Congress is in session, once the bill has been presented, he has 10 days (plus Sundays) to sign or veto - if he doesn’t do either, it becomes law.

pocket veto - The Constitution grants the president 10 days to review a measure passed by the Congress. If the president has not signed the bill after 10 days, it becomes law without his signature. However, if Congress adjourns during the 10-day period, the bill does not become law. Source: US Senate

Admittedly speaking as a survivor of a narcissist:

Yeah, it’s not that he has one plan or thing in mind. It’s that his ego is bruised and he is a swirling mass of shame, anger, sadism, vengefulness, and need-for-praise. The only reason it feels like there’s a plan is because he’s also a coward and easy to influence, so people have previously tugged him in a direction that seems to indicate a plan.

Right now Trump is deep in denial about losing, so he’s oscilating between indulging that vengeful/sadistic streak because the people that “owe” him have failed him, and trying to create a new transaction to make them more compliant.

There’s not even a fixed end point for this. It’s just throwing shit about, moment by moment.

Except this congress ends at noon on Jan 3. The president has 10 days (excluding Sundays) to sign/veto. He could literally just ride it out without doing anything and it would die at the end of the Congress. Even if he vetoed, there’s no way Congress (the Senate in particular) could get through their procedural steps to override before the Congress ended on the 3rd.

Relatedly, if he vetoes the NDAA as he is still threatening, the timeline probably has the Senate voting on ~Jan 1-2 (maybe even before noon on the 3rd!) to try to override.

It’s very true. This is often what happens with people who, like me, suffer from sleep apnea. You’re tired all the time - you don’t realize that’s because you’re waking up with an abysmally low blood oxygen % and that it could possibly kill you (quite aside from the potential of choking to death in your sleep).

I remember my pleural empyema (due to a pneumonia, which in turn was due to a cold) four years ago or so. Decent saturation, but high fever, pain in the lungs (mostly the left), coughing blood, and a CRP north of 250. I was sick as a dog, and was in hospital for 12 days. And that’s still an order of magnitude less than a CoViD-19 infection.
And oh yeah, not even IV antibiotics (which I was on for 12 days) will bite on CoViD-19, because it’s a virus, not a bacteria.

It’s been 10 days since vaccines were approved for emergency use in the US, and just over 1 million doses have been administered.

At this rate, it’ll be 3300 days before we get the entire population (or more than 9 years) inoculated in the US thanks to Trump fucking up the logistics and rollout of the vaccine distribution.

Biden will have to do much better than that.

He’s playing to the base. All he has to do is continue to sow doubt in order to placate them.

Whether he has been told repeatedly or not that signature verification is a no-go, much less whether he believes it, and relatively unimportant since his denial of reality has gone far past being a bug in his personality to being a defining feature.

Region Stockholm is asking for the crisis contract clauses to be activated (again, it happened this spring as well).
sverigesradio.se (Swedish)
svt.se (Swedish)

Update: Crisis contract clauses activated in Region Gävleborg, Region Västra Götaland in addition to Region Stockholm.

The crisis contract clauses were applied to intensive care in Stockholm this spring. This was the first time ever the agreement was activated.
The agreement is activated by SKR at the request of the employers (regions). First, the employer must have tried to resolve the situation themselves.
The agreement means longer working hours and higher wages:
Monthly salary or hourly salary is paid. In addition, a crisis compensation of 120 percent of the salary per hour is paid. This means a total compensation of 220 percent of the salary per hour. The crisis compensation is increased to 150 percent of the salary per hour when taking special emergency overtime.
The Working Hours Act has been replaced by provisions in the collective agreement that are specially adapted based on the crisis situation.
The regular working time measure is 48 hours per week during a calculation period of a maximum of four weeks.
A special emergency overtime can be taken in addition to the regular working hours.
Adapted rules for daily and weekly rest.

Trump’s going to burn it all down in a fit of rage because he didn’t get sufficient help in overthrowing the election and stealing it to remain in office because after 1/20 he faces a shit-ton (legal term) of lawsuits, indictments, and the bill comes due.

NDAA and relief bills will likely get veto overrides. The only question is how quickly that happens, and if fucknuts like Paul delay the override to January 3 (when new Congress takes over), it means the bill is dead and Congress would have to go through the entire process anew.

The U.S. ranks 43rd worldwide in sequencing to check for variants of the coronavirus, WaPo

The United States has the most coronavirus cases in the world — but in sequencing cases to check for genetic changes, it lags at an astoundingly low rate.
Of the more than 18 million cases officially reported in the United States, just 51,212, or 0.3 percent, have been genetically analyzed for variants, according to the latest data from the GISAID Initiative, which provides a global database of coronavirus genomes. Worldwide, the United States ranks 43rd in percentage of cases sequenced among countries with more than 100 infections.

IIRC Benning is the home of the 101st Airborne.Fort Winters for Major Dick Winters, one of the great heroes of WWII would be a nice touch.

The 101 is at Ft. Campbell and according to wiki “The fort is named in honor of Union Army Brigadier General William Bowen Campbell, the last Whig Governor of Tennessee.”

Ft Winters is a good idea perhaps for Bragg. Benning would be better renamed Fort Thomas or Ft Buford now that the Armor school is there too.

The New York Attorney General’s office has issued subpoenas to right-wing trolls Jacob Wohl, 22, and Jack Burkman, 58, in connection to an alleged voter-intimidation robocall scheme that has already led to felony indictments in Ohio and Michigan, as well as a federal civil suit filed in the Southern District of New York.

The three subpoenas, each signed Dec. 22 and obtained by Salon, target Wohl, Burkman and Burkman’s consulting firm, Burkman & Associates. Prosecutors are seeking information about who funded the robocalls, including about the source of funds in the firm’s Bank of America account, as well as any relevant communications. More broadly, investigators also want to see all documents concerning Project 1599, Burkman’s organization, which not only claims credit for the calls in the recordings but has also been linked to a number of other political stunts the duo has carried out over the years.

The New York Attorney General specifically asks about payments to a voice broadcasting company called Message Communications, which Wohl and Burkman paid for the service. Robert Mahanian, who runs the L.A.-based company, confirmed to Salon that he has complied with requests from a number of attorneys general regarding Wohl and Burkman.

A Mom Anon  Dec 23, 2020 • 2:25:25pm

I’m not entirely sure it’s Lindsay Graham and underage boys, TBH. Here’s why:

Lindsay has been going through his whole life closeted. Sure, people may have whispered or talked shit behind his back, but he’s also from a generation where you simply never talked about anything that was not considered socially acceptable. It’s not just homosexuality, stuff like addiction, serious illnesses, etc were not talked about at ALL in public or often even in private and lots and lots of shame was(and often still is) attached to much of it. Imagine living like that for most of your life, you may adapt and eventually accept it as normal, but it’s still going to do damage to your heart and soul. It really could be just as simple of someone having photos or evidence of an adult gay relationship that would put the fear of God and discovery up front. Being a Republican, you know what would be done if many of his colleagues and constituents found out.

I know, I am giving the ass beret way too much credit here. But it might not take anything more than proving he’s gay without a doubt that is keeping him in check. He’s lived with shame his whole life, which is why he’s the way he is, in part at least. Beyond being a right wing asshole. YMMV of course and I may be missing details, so I could be totally wrong.

13 or 14 would be young enough to be very problematical for him — like prison time. Illinois’ very own Congressman Mel Reynolds was sentenced to 5 years in prison for his relationship with a 16 year old campaign volunteer and solicitation of child pornography for his asking her to get lewd pictures of a 15 year old girl. And that ended his political career.

When the church doors open, only white people will be allowed inside.

That’s the message the Asatru Folk Assembly in Murdock, Minnesota, is sending after being granted a conditional use permit to open a church there and practice its pre-Christian religion that originated in northern Europe.

I’m a municipal planner and RLUIPA makes denying a church a very dicey affair. If you’d allow a theater or fraternal hall of the same capacity, you have to allow the church. Council members, who were meeting online because of the coronavirus pandemic, kept video cameras turned off and refused to identify who voted for or against the permit.
The building at the heart of the discussion is the old Lutheran church on Highway 12 in Murdock. Mayor Craig Kavanagh told KARE 11 that the vote was 3-1 to approve the Conditional Use Permit as long as the group (Asatru Folk Assembly) meets the conditions set on the permit.
“There has been a lot of concern on this topic in the city of Murdock and rightfully so. We just want to be clear we are not discussing race with our decision. This is strictly a zoning issue,” Mayor Kavanaugh emphasized in a statement to KARE 11. “We as the leaders of the City of Murdock want it be known that the city of Murdock condemns racism in all of its forms: conscious, unconscious, any place, any time, now and in the future. We are committed to building a community that promotes equal justice and opportunity to every single person regardless of their race.”

snip

Allen Turnage, the Law Speaker for the AFA denies the label the Southern Poverty Law Center has given the group and said he was willing to answer questions people had back in October, and is willing to answer them now.
“We believe that as Northern Europeans, this is not only our birthright but our obligation to maintain that ancestral memory,” Turnage said over the phone on Thursday. “And to give worship if that’s the right word. Worship and fealty to our gods and our ancestors.”
KARE 11’s Sharon Yoo asked if it was true that the AFA does not accept Black, Indigenous and People of Color into its congregation. Turnage confirmed this
“It’s true both that we don’t accept those members and that that’s the area of concern,” Turnage said.
When asked why AFA does not accept BIPOC members into its group, Turnage made an analogy.
“I think the best analogy is that we view our gods as our ancestors,” he said. “If we have a family reunion, it’s only our family.”

The problem is Federal law severely constrains local jurisdictions where religion comes into play (the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act). Religious uses cannot be treated more strictly than similar non religious ones. And I doubt anyone wants local City or County elected officials deciding what constitutes a valid religion when making land use determinations.

The models have been changing a bit. First only a bit of rain, then some measurable amount. Now the models are pulling back on the amount of rain.

Down here we are expecting at most a quarter of an inch, but more likely it will be just a trace.

Not to be a contrarian, but they do look consistent with suspected Iranian manufactured Haseb 107mm rockets. Including the English stenciled information. (These rockets were designed by China as Type 63 in the 1950’s)

The things laying next to the tip of the rocket are the fuses. Those make the projectile explode. They appear to be pd (Point detonating) with graze function. (Still explode even when rocket does not make a direct hit.) The fuses were likely removed to minimize any chance of the warhead going off.

The wires at the bottom may be connected to the igniters.

A common tactic is to lay the rockets on rails generally pointed at the desired target. Then connect the igniter to a timer. The crew then scoots long before the rocket goes off. Based upon their condition, it is unlikely that they fired.

We were supposed to get 5-8” even as recently as this morning; it looks like we’re going to be on the low end of that range, if that. The wind is doing the same thing here; as I type this, it’s calm, but it could slam the house with a serious gust at any minute.

Who says they won’t produce jack shit, or have a shredding party, or replace their hard drives? This is like asking the fox to watch the hen house. Relying on the bad guys to produce communications that show they’re bad just doesn’t seem very reliable.

Am I missing something?

Failure to preserve or present documentation is the original definition of “obstruction of justice”. I figured they do this under the assumption they verify at least some records they’re 99% sure the bad guys have, they will produce. Thing is, records of email transmissions, etc. can also be deleted from the source. I imagine the WH is going to say nope, we can’t show this ever got sent, delete it off the server kind of stuff, shred that stack of shit over there, and that coincides with the recipient saying “Nope, never got anything like that. Don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Because we KNOW what happens when they do make those distinctions. They discriminate against minority religions, and we’re not just talking about Muslims. Pagans of various types have had to deal with religious bigotry on local zoning boards for a long time.

re: #244 Dr. Teddy’s Person

Wilson was a confederate fan boi.

That’s correct. When I was a student at UTAustin in the first half of the 1980s (yeah, I was on the 6 year plan), there was a statue of Woodrow Wilson in a prominent place and I couldn’t figure out why the hell he was there, since he was from New Jersey and all. It wasn’t until years and years later that I learned Wilson segregated the federal work force and demoted Black government employees. That’s why George Washington Littlefield, who funded much of the central UTAustin campus, and who was an unrepentant racist and Confederate lover, commissioned the Wilson statue. It’s unclear whether the statue is still where it’s at; it appears it may have been removed to “preserve symmetry” when the Jeff Davis statue came down.

I’mma just going to quote this from Littlefield’s Wikipedia article:

George W. Littlefield died at his home in Austin on November 10, 1920. He is interred at Oakwood Cemetery next to Alice Littlefield, who survived him by fifteen years. Nathan Stokes, his former slave and lifelong servant, is buried in the same plot.

en.wikipedia.org

We knew Littlefield was racist, we just didn’t know how racist he was, nor did we know how racism was so incredibly embedded into UTAustin.

re: #287 jaunte

Turns out that being a barbarous spree-killer is not the only reason Trump would have to love Bales. He was also a crooked stockbroker:

After leaving college, Bales worked as a stockbroker at five financial services firms in Columbus, Ohio. The firms were related, sharing employees and corporate offices. During that period, while employed with Michael Patterson, Inc., Bales and the firm engaged in fraudulent securities activities. An arbitration panel later found both Bales and his employer liable for financial fraud related to the handling of a retirement account and ordered them to pay $1.4 million in civil damages. Gary Liebschner, the victim, said he “never got paid a penny” of the award. According to Liebschner’s lawyer, they had not pursued legal action against Bales to collect the judgment because they were unable to locate Bales, who had joined the U.S. Army 18 months after the long-running arbitration case was filed.

In May 1999, while still employed with a securities firm in Ohio, Bales, his brother Mark, and Marc Edwards co-founded a financial services firm named Spartina Investments in Doral, Florida. The state dissolved Spartina in September 2000, after the company failed to file its annual report in a timely manner.

Bales enlisted in the U.S. Army in November 2001, shortly after the September 11 attacks.

Nope. Do away with presidential pardons completely. Set up a panel of, say 9 people that can not have ever held political office that can recommend pardons to congress. A recommendation takes unanimous consent of the panel. The pardon then has to pass both houses by a 2/3 majority.

The problem has always been that pardoning is very powerful and given to the President. It is a discretionary power.

The idea of the framers may have been that anyone who was President would, even if he be corrupt, at least cautious about the use of such power.

But they didn’t foresee a time when a malicious fool would be so loved by Americans that outright crimes are celebrated.

Anyone ask Trump’s Pulpit Pimp Posse for their statements on these pardons?

You know, I’ve spent the day talking about how Trump’s decisions are mostly about the black box of his narcissism, but at the end of the day I could argue that his pardons are a statement about how he and his allies view the nature of power and the character of the nation. Lined up, end to end, the pardons say something…not intentionally, this is still a stupid man and a cloud of enablers…but nonetheless a series of statements about how government should function.

War crimes don’t matter, because the right nature of war is between peoples and there are no noncombatants where the USA touches down.

Financial crimes are simply…understandable…because it’s not a bad thing to do anything to get more money.

The peddling of influence is simply a facet of the nature of power: the powerful justify themselves.

There is a worldview present…and I’d argue that how he and his allies have governed echoes the same worldview, and the authoritarian he fawns over and the governments he tries to prop up also hold that worldview.

re: #292 The Pie Overlord!

What about Saami and Inuit? It’s probably their religion that these folks are stealing.

I’m pretty sure it’s like Wiccan in that it’s a modern “look” at pagan religions and to a degree made up of whole cloth.

The blood purity side of it is racist to the core and claiming it’s to honor the proper ancestors is just the fig leaf being used to justify it.

I’d be curious what the purity requirements are for being allowed in; e.g. at what point there is too much non-Nordic ancestry to allow membership. And I also bet they don’t have a mandatory genealogy test since I suspect a number of their members would “fail” it.

All - every last one - of trump’s pardons are political - to protect himself. Still hard to believe over 70 million people wanted him to have a 2nd term.

I remember the effort President Obama went through to decide who to pardon. That was how a real president acts.

Nearly all neopagan religions including Wicca and Asatru are reconstructions. There was no unbroken chain of the original religions to modern times. Much of the traditions were lost to time and a thousand+ years of Christian dominance. It’s widely believed that in the case of Wicca, Gerald Gardner and Margaret Murray made quite a bit of shit up while establishing it.

I imagine that Neo Germanic and Celtic pagan reconstructions might be closer than the original than say the constructed Proto-Indo-European language is to what was actually spoken in the Kurgan cultural area, but still, it’s a reconstruction.

Presumably to override the election and certify that Donald J. Trump won 538 electoral votes, first unanimous election in history, and demand that the usurper Biden hand back the reins of control.

I’m going to lose my shit if he pardons Edward Snowden.

Because even if the new AG tries to challenge some of these pardons, Snowden’s will stand because too many fucking idiots still think he’s a whistleblowing hero instead of a Russian intelligence asset. Almost everyone I know, regardless of political background thinks this.

I can’t count how many arguments I got in with people over this. People who by getting in said argument with me were basically moron-splaining my fucking job to me.

Snowden was a goddamn tool. The very best thing I could say about him is that he was a useful idiot. At worst, he’s a fucking treasonweasel and deserves to swing from an old oak tree for his crimes.

re: #314 Jack Burton

I think the first constitutional amendment we propose after all this is, limitations on the pardon power.

This toy has been abused and needs to be curtailed or taken away. Just like cops military toys.

Suggestions: Only 4 pardons per term, further requires congressional approval. Can’t pardon self, immediate family, or administration members. Cannot pre-emptively pardon anyone. Cannot pardon anyone where the pardon in itself is obstruction of justice.

Carter pardoned over 200,000 Vietnam War draft evaders. I think that is in line with what the pardon should be used for. And I can guarantee, Congress likely would have objected to this mass pardon.
