Question: is there a sense of schadenfreude for any of you in seeing so many people in the South get hammered by a largely preventable serious illness because of their own stupid decisions?

Actually, I’m going to be honest, at this point it’s just sad. Like, it’s legit depressing to me to see so many people who are out there willfully getting themselves sick, and then on their deathbeds, they regret all their life choices. It still breaks my heart, even though I know it’s their own damn fault, because I wish we could reach these people in time and heal all the political wounds and the brain-washing. But we can’t, and it’s killing them. Literally.

This is a rerun of their rejection of Obamacare. Daily Kos has numerous diaries of people terminally ill who refused to sign up for Obamacare because they hated the black man in the Oval Office. A bunch of diaries quoted people saying they would rather die that get coverage…and others who said they were willing to die for their race.

Not so much schadenfreuden as shrugging. I used to care and hope they’d come around. Now 🤷‍♀️. Whatever.

If you want to die so badly for your cause, go to God. 👋🏼

As a Southern boy born and raised, for me it’s not so much schadenfreude, but a profound anger that too many of us are so damned stupid, gullible, and contrary that we’d rather engage in self-destructive behavior than ever admit that the Satanic liberal hippie atheist homosexual communist science believers were right.

It’s hurting all of us. How do we ever get back to “packed houses” at restaurants and theaters? Although I myself blame the Delta variant mostly in terms of the surge.

Yet-The willingness to ignore or deny the threat of contagion of another gets me. One of the arguments against mandating vaccing is “informed consent”. How is the young lady with a family getting informed consent in a crowded elevator that includes the unvaccinated and careless type? Especially with the breakout factor?

I dunno if MMA has the same legalities as boxing, but… if a licensed boxer hits somebody outside the ring, that’s assault with a deadly weapon. The law in all 50 states recognizes that if Mike Tyson punches you in a bar fight, it’s the criminal justice equivalent of some regular guy swinging at you with a baseball bat or a lead pipe.

I got news for the dipshit in that video. Most human beings don’t understand freedom, and they generally don’t like it when they do.

Why? Because freedom gets in the way of power. As the GQP demonstrates every day. When they say ‘freedom’ or ‘liberty’ they mean ‘power.’

Also that video demonstrated yet again that the authoritarians and barbarians masquerading as conservatives hatred of Marxism is based on envy. How they want the same power that the Politburo had. Or Putin for that matter.

It may be state-by-state, but here in Minnesota, we were always taught this in our tae kwon do classes. Men, in particular, were told, “If you use force for self-defense, you WILL be arrested. Full stop. You need to make sure you can prove your life is in danger, and even then, you still might be charged and have to answer for it in court. Make smart decisions about exercising your skills outside the dojo.”

I’ve known some sheep farmers in my life…can’t think of one that loses a sheep to a coyote and waits to see if it takes a half dozen more before acting.

Florida pastor holds vaccine clinic after losing a shit-ton of churchgoers.

This pastor actually held a first vaccination drive in March (it’s noted in this article and elsewhere). Blame the parishioners, and the disinformation.

I didn’t have the flexibility to kick my opponents in the head, LOL. If you were on the receiving end of a kick from me, it was most likely a mule kick in the chest/abdomen, at which I was quite adept. Otherwise, I used kicks to make space to throw my unexpectedly fast left hand.

Fun fact: Harrison Ford was suffering badly from 6 weeks of filming in the 130-degree-F heat. He improvised this scene basically on the spot, and it was so iconic, Spielberg accepted it on the first take.

It’s what I really loved about the only time I watched Hapkido. They do interesting mid-level kicks where it looks like the front of the foot rotates towards the outside of the victim’s body. My assumption is it’s because someone said to themselves, “Yeah, it looks flashy to connect with the front of the foot, but if I rotate my leg, I put the whole whoop-ass on him, rather than just the partial one.”

Most fighters who fight left-hand front are right-handed, using the right hand for power hits. I was left-handed, and used the strength and accuracy of my left hand to hit people in the head in sparring matches. I earned the majority of my points with simple front punches or karate chops from that.

Completely. That’s why I keep saying if they’re so intent on committing suicide, have at it.

Mind you, I’m perfectly fine staying home all the time. I was antisocial before it was cool. Yet I’m starting to want to go do something…I honestly can’t imagine how people who are generally normal socially are coping, or not coping. It’s those people, it’s the collateral dead people, it’s the Innocents what I have 100% empathy for. Those putting everyone at risk? Get on with it already. Stop going to the hospital. This is what comes of “American exceptionalism”-thinking. Naturally everyone else in the world envies us and wants to be like us, so if we just give them a glimpse of what we’ve got they will join us (caveat: we’ll still sneer at them).

We have great academic experts—anthropologists, historians, political scientists, etc.,—who could have well predicted what would happen in Iraq (and did predict), and we had the experience of the Soviet Union (not to mention centuries of other examples) of what happens to those who invade Afghanistan.

Yup! In the prepper and survivalist communities there are a lot of recommendations to collect women’s hygiene products, such as pads and tampons, for use as sterile bandages for wounds. (Yes, tampons for gunshot and stab wound hemorrhaging.)

Also -
Tampion
A tampion or tompion (in the Royal Navy) is a wooden plug, or a metal, canvas, rubber, or plastic cover, for the muzzle of a gun or mortar.[2] Tampions can be found on both land-based artillery and naval guns.
en.wikipedia.org

I understand that this term was also used for the musket bore plugs that kept out rain, snow, mud, and dirt.

Hapkido was my favourite style of martial arts. So well rounded.

In addition to the usual blows and kicks there was also training in moves similar to aikido, along with break falls and weaponry at the higher levels.

*Some* adult women. Us older adult women don’t have tampons in our purses. (I will admit that it was a few years after I finally went into menopause before I finally got rid of my last box. You know, because of the fear that Shark Week might return.)

Having gone through training for wounds, the goal is to stop the bleeding. A tourniquet is useful if you have enough. If you have to, you pack it. Anything that you out in will have to be removed the hard way, but it’s better than bleeding out and will work if you can’t apply the right pressure. We were taught that rolled up gauze can be used. The mask, if rolled up, will work.

Question: is there a sense of schadenfreude for any of you in seeing so many people in the South get hammered by a largely preventable serious illness because of their own stupid decisions?

No, not really. There is a lot of irony. We told them so, for damned sure, but I cannot gloat: It is too sad. An enormous number of people are dying, many more will suffer lifelong pain and disability. There will be many orphans and blighted families. We did not choose this or cause it, we did everything we could to prevent it, to no avail and for damned little thanks. Our responsibility is only beginning, too. We must make sure that those who did cause it, the liars and grifters and opportunists, do not escape retribution. We must correct the social, cultural and economic flaws that allowed them to come to power.

Today is my birthday. I am now 40. Not quite young, not quite old yet.

I can’t celebrate it the way I want (fuck you, Covid) but I went to a local comic book store this morning for Free Comic Book day, then swimming at my favorite river spot and tonight I am having a small dinner with a few (vaccinated) friends. I’m still here, hanging in and healthy. Can’t complain too much I guess.

I went over to take a peek at Reason to see how the Libertarians are taking the withdrawal from Afghanistan. Considering their position on troops stationed overseas and especially warfare in foreign countries, I figured they would have at least something about it.

Nope.

They do have a disingenuous and strawman article about the four teachers who died from Covid-19 in Broward County, Fla., claiming that liberals are focusing on DeSantis’s mask prohibitions when school is not in session yet so they obviously didn’t die from exposure in school.

No shyte. The idea is what happens when it opens.

They also give an either/or choice for vaccines and masks, when the solution is “both.”

And of course being Libertarians, the solution is to privatise all schools.

That’s right. There was a report issued a few days ago about the Phoenix PD and without saying “The DoJ ought to look into this”, it said “The DoJ really should look into this.”

phoenixnewtimes.com

The report was part of a larger investigation into arrests last summer at George Floyd protests. The Phoenix PD and our DA, Allison Adel, who is a complete and utter shit for this reason, decided to say that anti-police brutality protesters were members of a gang called “ACAB”. They presented evidence of same to a grand jury, and the jury indicted these protesters on charges that they assisted a street gang. The charges were dropped last February, but the protesters (rightly, IMO) are suing Adel and the Phoenix PD for violation of their civil rights.

phoenixnewtimes.com

Yeah, I live over in Mesa, where we have our own problems, but I’ve protested in other towns/cities in the Phoenix area, and I can tell you, it sent a chill down my spine when I saw people were charged with being associated with a gang. I didn’t go to the Black Lives Matters protests last summer only because of (a) COVID and (b) It was too damned hot (we had 53 110F+ days last summer). But I do protest churches, and I can tell you, people DO get VERY weird about church protesters. So I appreciate every smackdown that the local police get when it comes to civil rights, because they do violate them every chance they get.

Ron DeSantis was harshly criticized on CNN on Saturday after comments he made during an appearance on Fox News. Jim Acosta played a clip of DeSantis telling Tucker Carlson that public health measures to prevent the spread of the pandemic are the “most significant threat to freedom” since the fall of the Berlin wall.”

“Dr. Jonathan Reiner said…….”I have news for the governor. a greater threat to freedom is being paralyzed in a drug-induced coma on a ventilator in an ICU.”

“The governor of Florida is violating the rule of holes,” he explained. “When you find yourself in a hole, stop digging. He has dug himself an enormous hole in Florida, he has handcuffed himself, he has removed the tools to suppress a pandemic …… enforcing masking requirements, closing down crowded venues, incentivizing people positively or negatively to get vaccinated.”

“He has removed all of these tools and found himself in a deep, deep hole, yet he keeps digging,” he said.”….. (Rawstory)

in the process he’s burying thousands of Floridians including an increasing number of children because like his Dear Leader, he’s a narcissistic sociopath who’s psychoemotionally incapable of admitting that he’s wrong or doing anything that might endanger his presidential aspirations.

And ps the fall of the Berlin wall was a threat to freedom?

Plus said selfish assholes carry their disease and attempts to crash the healthcare system to other areas (looking at you, Sturgis).

A more reasonable approach from my opinion would have been a surgical attack to capture or kill Bin Laden, then get the hell out. Use our soft power of economics and politics to completely isolate the Taliban government of Afghanistan from the whole world, while helping people escape who wanted to.

That doesn’t make conservative donors richer though.

The Taliban seized the city of Jalalabad early Sunday, cutting off Afghanistan’s increasingly isolated capital Kabul to the east as the insurgents’ blitz across the country continued ahead of the withdrawal of U.S. and NATO forces from the country after two decades of war.

The collapse of Jalalabad, which had been the last major city standing besides Kabul, leaves Afghanistan’s central government in control of just the capital and seven other provincial capitals. In a nationwide offensive that has taken just over a week, the Taliban has defeated, co-opted or sent Afghan security forces fleeing from wide swathes of the country, even with some air support by the U.S. military.

That was the conclusion I and my “reasonable conservative” friend reached this morning, that the situation is quickly moving to a desperate last-ditch effort to airlift as many people out of Kabul as we can before the city falls. Figure those of the legit government who haven’t already fled the country will be evacuated to our embassy, and then airlifted out once the sacking begins in earnest. They’ll wind up setting up shop somewhere else as the “government-in-exile” while the Taliban returns to the states quo antebellum of ruling from Kandahar.

The issue about sympathy for the unvaccinated is that the image most people have in their minds now is not of the single mother who can’t take time from work to get an appointment, or the guy living out in the country who would have to drive hours to the nearest pharmacy offering shots, or even the cancer sufferer who simply can’t get the jab in the first place.

No, the face of the unvaccinated in America is that Tucker Carlson, of Laura Ingraham, of MTG and White Trash Barbie (aka Lauren Boebert). It’s of the “Karen” who screams at school board meetings about how her little baby can’t breath while wearing a mask, it’s the dipshit who makes a scene at Whole Foods because he wants his 15 min of internet fame, or the assholes who burn masks at demonstrations. And it’s the dumb schmucks who make the nightly news from the ICU, begging doctors for the vaccine as they’re about to have a tube jammed down their throats just to breath.

It’s hard as fuck to build sympathy for somebody who takes pride in not only gambling with his own health, but does so at the expense of you and yours.

I rode earlier today but came in when it got hot and was 8.5 miles short of my goal so I squeezed in an evening ride to make my target of 800 miles in 11 weeks. I’ll hit 1000 miles in week 14. I’m still having fun but I need new places to ride. I’ve got almost all the big bumps memorized on over 50 miles of roads and paths.

In “the Panhandle is on fire” news:

The Hackberry Fire burning in Banner and Morrill Counties has expanded to 6,177 acres (2,500 ha). It was fully contained, but jumped the fire lines yesterday. The winds have shifted since yesterday, now blowing out of the south-southeast, blowing the fire into new unburned areas.

The Cross Fire (burning in Banner and Scott’s Bluff Counties) has expanded to 2,460 acres (995 ha). It is in the Wildcat Hills, now 13 miles south of the county seat of Scott’s Bluff County (Gering). The wind is blowing toward Gering and Scottsbluff (the two largest cities in the Panhandle).

A few ‘free’ (as in no extra charge :) ) thoughts..

On Afghanistan -

An orderly retreat is the hardest military maneuver to conduct. I suspect that we will largely succeed in that. At least as far as Western personnel are concerned.

We are apparently currently deploying 5000-8000 US military combat personnel plus additional allied personnel to theater. Plus, likely major air and ballistic assets (guided missiles).

My guess as to timeline before we’re evacuated from Kabul: Days- possibly; Weeks- likely; Months - highly unlikely.

However, what is going to suck for the soldiers are two things:

1. Returning fire at Talibs embedded in groups of fleeing civilians.
2. Denying desperate refugees entrance onto aircraft. And stopping them by force if necessary.

Additionally, I suspect that Russian, Chinese, Pakistani and Iranian purchasers will be looking for opportunities to acquire US military technology.

I suspect that it will be another year or two before the internal power and control questions begin to clarify. With the associated bloodshed, winners and losers. (And I expect Pakistan and China to heavily put their thumbs on the scale.)

Globally…

We have been left in a deteriorated strategic/diplomatic situation by tfg. Hong Kong and Afghanistan currently lost. I suspect Syria/Kurdistan and Iraq next. We are in for some retrenching. And the American passport will be a bit diminished as a result.

Next, I suspect, will come more confrontations along the Russian border in the Baltic, Ukraine, possibly Caucasus (Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan). And confrontations along the Chinese declared zone of interest. Fortunately, we are buying a significant portion of their National product, and all of their leading families are part of the industry owners, so I suspect that the Chinese will try to keep things to a low level.

Otoh, I don’t think that it is as serious as the 1970’s were. Our position in Southeast Asia collapsed, USArEur pretty much collapsed, and the US economy just about collapsed.

Of course, the Republicans could always create enough damage to the country to ensure we are in worse shape.

I had my first shingles, I’m about due for second. My worst tetanus shot experience was when I had a 72 Dodge Challenger with a Schaeffer racing clutch which took about 120 pounds on the pedal to push it in. (when I had it installed I told the mechanic it must be broken. It took me a month to build up my left leg) I felt that shot every time I pushed in the clutch for days.

The two groups who are declaring political disaster over Afghanistan are the veterans who were there, met the people, worked hard to make things better, and are seeing it all collapsing; and the GOP and media who really really want BIDEN’S KATRINA.

It’s terrible what’s happening, but it was baked into the cake long ago. Biden did what needed to be done: that’s it. We need to take as many refugees (or get them settled somewhere) as we possibly, politically, can.

Meanwhile, in San Diego….

A controversial anti-vaccine thread in an online forum is causing concern because it involves members of the San Diego Police Department.

The post calls on hundreds of officers “willing to risk it all” to fight city and state pandemic-related rules.

In the post, a police sergeant allegedly claims he and a growing number of officers have vowed to “never take the vaccine, be tested or wear masks — unless by choice.”

A local activist named Tasha Williamson posted screenshots of the thread on Facebook. It’s said to have come from a forum on the San Diego Police Officers Association website. In the post, the sergeant claims he and a growing number of officers are vowing to “Never take the vaccine, be tested or wear masks - unless by choice. Titled “(Vaccine Mandate) Will You Stand? 1776 again!!!…,” the post by the officer claims he and another “God fearing patriot” within the department are building up a coalition of officers who will “stand up for our God given freedoms and are willing to risk it all.”

I’ve never really gotten the impression that the people of Afghanistan were ever really invested in the government that we installed. The people put in charge fell somewhere on a sliding scale between “incompetent” and “totally corrupt,” were either bribing the warlords or looking the other way on the opium trade, and continued the country’s biggest industry: Making foreign aid magically disappear into their bank accounts. The locals certainly loved the idea of freedom and democracy, but the experience left a lot to be desired.

But you can bet that the GOP is going to try to lay the blame at Biden’s feet, even though the exact same thing would’ve happened in the Spring under Trump’s withdrawal timetable. Biden was correct to not just let this continue to fester after 20 years of war, and the timing is good politically as well. The “liberal media” is gonna attack Biden with the same angle they went after Obama for in 2011: “Optics.” They won’t try to articulate what a “win” in Afghanistan would have looked like, they’ll moan about veterans watched “all those won” being “abandoned.” They won’t find experts to argue in favor of an indefinite occupation of the country, they’ll bring on political hacks to declare that choppers airlifting people out “looks bad” on TV screens. And they won’t ask Repubs to explain why they shouldn’t be dubbed hypocrites for damning Biden after they praised Trump for trying to negotiate with the Taliban, they’ll instead ask them if voters should blame Biden for “losing.”

The acting Afghan interior minister has appeared in a video, broadcast on local outlet Tolo TV, saying there would be a “peaceful transfer of power” to a transitional government. He said Kabul would not come under attack.

The Associated Press news agency, citing an Afghan official, said Taliban negotiators were heading to the presidential palace to prepare for a “transfer” of power.

The Taliban earlier said they had instructed fighters to wait at the city’s gates.

The Taliban say they have taken over Bagram airfield and prison, on the outskirts of Kabul.

The complex was the epicentre of the war against the Taliban and al-Qaeda for some 20 years until last month, when the US military left in the dead of night without notifying the Afghans.

The US-led coalition forces moved in during December 2001, and Bagram was developed into a huge base capable of holding up to 10,000 troops.

George W Bush, Barack Obama and Donald Trump all visited the base during their tenures as president.

Bagram also contains a prison, with a reported 5,000 Taliban inmates left in the facility. Taliban sources have claimed that they have released these prisoners.

Bagram prison famously became known as Afghanistan’s Guantanamo - after the infamous US military prison in Cuba.

It was originally built and run by the Americans but was handed over to Afghan control in 2013.

The chairman of the UK parliamentary foreign affairs committee has criticised Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab for remaining silent on the Taliban advance in Afghanistan.

Conservative MP Tom Tugendhat told the BBC: “This is clearly the biggest single disaster of British foreign policy since Suez [in 1956] and we’re yet to hear a single word from the foreign secretary in the last week so I’m afraid I don’t know what he thinks.”

He says: “It is pretty extraordinary that our focus has been on minor negotiations with Nato and European partners and allies who we’ve worked with and traded with very, very closely for the last 70, 80, 90 years - rather than on the lives on 28 million Afghans, several thousands of whom have genuinely risked their lives in order to save the lives of British soldiers or to serve the interests of the British people in preventing terrorism keeping our country safe.”

The BBC has contacted the Foreign Office asking for an interview but no one has been made available.

I hope that finally the myth of nation-building will die.

It’s a very colonial idea.

Nations come and go. People have to govern themselves or they won’t be governed.

I have no idea what the Taliban will do once in total control of the nation. Then again, I’m not sure what the Taliban even is anymore.

From what I gather, this will be just another theocracy that will rule over an increasingly impoverished nation.

We’ve heard in the last few minutes that the UK prime minister is expected to recall parliament for urgent talks over the situation in Afghanistan.

A statement by the leader of the opposition said MPs need to abandon the summer recess and return to the House of Commons to address government plans on how to avoid a humanitarian disaster in the region.

“The situation in Afghanistan is deeply shocking and seems to be worsening by the hour,” said Sir Keir Starmer.

“The immediate priority now must be to get all British personnel and support staff safely out of Kabul.

“The government has been silent while Afghanistan collapses, which - let’s be clear - will have ramifications for us here in the UK.

“We need parliament recalled so the government can update MPs on how it plans to work with allies to avoid a humanitarian crisis and a return to the days of Afghanistan being a base for extremists, whose purpose will be to threaten our interests, values and national security.”

It’s a very colonial idea.

I’m getting tired of the keyboard warriors on Twitter who are criticizing Biden. If they want someone to fight the Taliban, they can fuck off, grab a rifle and go do it themselves, because no-one in Afghanistan wants to. Biden is under no obligation to continue to send US troops to fight and die there.

The first time around, they had barely 5 years, and for most of that they were Al Qaeda’s puppets.

Now they’ve had 20 years to think about it, and plan for it, and forge cooperative bonds with whatever anti-American nations were willing to offer them advisors…

This super-quick takeover would indicate they have very specific intentions that cover a lot more than just a few months.

The idea that one should care about C02 per capita is entirely a political strategy to greenwash not reducing total C02 output enough.

The UK’s population hasn’t been growing rapidly, so I’m sure they have been cutting actual emissions as well. The point is, you can cut emissions and still grow the economy; the GOP is lying when it says cutting emissions is a jobs killer.

Of course they are. But turning cutting emissions and shifting the industries which cause emissions to lower emissions in a way which creates jobs costs money and effort, they’ve grown addicted to to creating growth without costs and effort.

Yes, but the GOP has been increasingly deceitful all during the past 50 years.

As for CO2: 6 metric tonnes per capita per year, if the whole world did this, would mean 45 gigatons per year, which is considerable.

So the UK is still taking more than its fair share of the atmosphere.

The IPCC meeting this fall will be full of posturing, and the UK needs to make an argument that they are reducing CO2. But the poor nations of the world will point out that the UK is still using up too much of the atmosphere.

Furthermore the UK, like the US, off-shores CO2 emissions by importing finished goods and, importantly, importing high-emissions items (like refined metals.)

Regarding mitigation:

Here in the US, since we ignore for the most part the urgency of the situation of so many nations who are facing sea level rise, I wish Congress would pass a law that says the US government will not back any mortgage on any property that is within 1 meter of projected sea level rise for 2050.

This will kill 30 year mortgages (as it’s already 2021) for sea-front properties,

Doing items like that is what is needed to drive home that climate change itself is going to be a tremendous impactor on life, which includes the GDP of this nation.

To avoid the worst scenarios going forward wrt climate change, the average global CO2 emissions per year has be down around 1 metric ton/yr/capita.

That is drastically below what Americans currently emit, and drastically below any current G20 nation’s per capita output.

We won’t do that.

Therefor, we as a nation (along with the rest of the G20) have decided that we are going to take more than our fair share of the atmosphere, and the poor countries of the world are just out of luck.

Magical Thinking strikes again. The inherent religious fabric woven into the American Conservative framework under the Bush Administration included a magic power being associated with the words “freedom” and “ democracy.” (The latter being largely degraded now that democracy is just another enemy of modern Conservatism). These two words were bottled and sold as a gift from God by Bush himself.

It was sold to the American public that once the people of Afghanistan tasted the sweet sweet nectar of democracy they would immediately throw aside thousands of years of tribal and Islamic traditions and that they would never again allow a religious cult to take power by defending their own country from extremists.

The irony is that our current American equivalents, the Proud Boys, III%ers, Oathkeepers, etc would also like to be able to sweep across the country and seize power throwing aside notions of freedom and democracy. They would likely also have the support of many local police and soldiers just like today’s Taliban have. They also would like to institute possession of multiple women, harsh punishments for political foes, oppression of minorities, etc etc.. so like the Taliban.

Hiring a lawyer to sue someone also costs money.

The Proud Boys and other groups raise millions of dollars from the Christian fundraising site GiveSendGo. I can only presume it’s Christians funding the fascists. Theocracy and fascism have a lot in common.

Proud Boys and other far-right groups raise millions via Christian funding site (The Guardian, April 10, 2021)

GiveSendGo is where all the groups too fascist or racist went when payment processors like PayPal kicked them off. The Christians running the site welcomed them with open arms, noting their libertarian leanings (we won’t ban anyone).

All sorts of fundraising for criminal prosecutions go on there, which is banned at sites like GoFundMe.

A data breach from Christian crowdfunding site GiveSendGo has revealed that millions of dollars have been raised on the site for far-right causes and groups, many of whom are banned from raising funds on other platforms.

It also identifies previously anonymous high-dollar donors to far-right actors, some of whom enjoy positions of wealth, power or public responsibility.

Some of the biggest beneficiaries have been members of groups such as the Proud Boys, designated as a terrorist group in Canada, many of whose fundraising efforts were directly related to the 6 January attack on the United States Capitol.

The breach, shared with journalists by transparency group Distributed Denial of Secrets, shows the site was used for a wide range of legitimate charitable purposes, such as crowdfunding medical bills, aid projects and religious missions.

But the site’s permissive stance towards far-right actors meant groups who had been banned from other fundraising platforms and payment processors following episodes of hate speech and violence have also used the platform.

Across at least 11 crowdfunding campaigns associated with the Proud Boys, members of the group, including some now facing conspiracy charges related to the Capitol attack, raised over $375,000. Some of these fundraisers netted large amounts of money in a short period.

Numerous Republican funders have used GiveSendGo to fund far-right groups, as the data breach revealed.

Candyce Kelshall, the president of the Canadian Association for Security and Intelligence Studies-Vancouver, who at at Simon Fraser University researches violent transnational social movements, said that far-right crowdfunding on GiveSendGo was just “the tip of the iceberg”, and similar efforts were happening across up to 54 other crowdfunding sites that her research had revealed.

She said, however, that GiveSendGo was “particularly insidious” due to its presentation of such crowdfunding in the guise of religion-based charity.

US officials say diplomats are being ferried by helicopter from the US embassy in the fortified Wazir Akbar Khan district to the international airport, Reuters reports.

The tarmac is busy with troops, contractors, diplomats and civilians, all trying to get out of the city, one US reporter says.

Those who are able to fly out are given special bracelets, showing their status as non-combatants, he adds.

Afghan forces have abandoned the field to Western forces, a pilot, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told the Associated Press.

Earlier, an Afghan flight loaded with troops who had surrendered to the Taliban landed at the airport, from Kandahar - despite shrapnel damage from a mortar attack, he added.

Meanwhile, in Brexitland:

Post-Brexit jobs crisis sparks huge backlog of pigs on farms

A “potentially disastrous” backlog of thousands of pigs is building up on East Anglian farms due to labour shortages at meat processing factories, said industry leaders.

A shortage of workers is affecting many business sectors following the post-Brexit changes to immigration rules, which have ended free movement across borders and forced many Eastern Europeans - which food and farming firms rely on - to seek employment in other countries.

Last week, the National Pig Association warned consumers it could “lead to empty retail shelves, which is likely to result in more imports”.

[…]

All this was expected. And still the UK decided to leave the biggest thing going for its ag sector - an open market to 7x the population of the UK. I wonder how many of these pig farmers voted for Brexit.

We didn’t have to go into Afghanistan. That’s the lying part.

The GOP played the public like a fiddle, particularly with their “if you’re not with us, you’re against us” rhetoric.

If we wanted retaliation against the Taliban government, we could do what we do best (bomb the crap out of their government buildings). We could have used our soft power to completely isolate Afghanistan from the entire world (but that doesn’t make billionaire Republican donors richer or create photo ops for Republican politician junkets to a war zone). We could have gotten Bin Laden without taking on the whole country. This story has been buried somewhat. And I am not really surprised with everything else that is going on.

And that the Trump administration intentionally made climate information less visible on government websites.

The NCDC likes to bury the lede:

As a whole, the July 2021 global surface temperature was the highest for July since global records began in 1880 at 0.93°C (1.67°F) above the 20th-century average of 15.8°C (60.4°F). This value surpassed the previous record set in 2016 (and subsequently matched in 2019 and 2020) by only 0.01°C (0.02°F). Because July is the warmest month of the year from a climatological perspective, July 2021 was more likely than not the warmest month on record for the globe since 1880. Nine of the 10 warmest Julys have occurred since 2010, with the last seven Julys (2015-2021) being the seven warmest Julys on record. July 1998 is the only July from the 20th century to be among the 10 warmest Julys on record. July 2021 marked the 45th consecutive July and the 439th consecutive month with temperatures, at least nominally, above the 20th-century average.

and

The global land-only surface temperature for July 2021 was 1.40°C (2.52°F) above the 20th-century average — the highest July land-only surface temperature on record, surpassing the previous record set in 2017, and again in 2020, by 0.17°C (0.31°F). The warmth across the global land surfaces was mainly driven by higher than normal temperatures across much of the Northern Hemisphere land, which also had its highest July temperature at 1.54°C (2.77°F), exceeding the now second warmest July set in 2012 by 0.19°C (0.34°F). Overall, the Northern Hemisphere land and ocean surface had its second warmest July on record at +1.14°C (+2.05°F). This was only 0.06°C (0.11°F) shy of tying the record warm July of 2020.

Governments around the world have reacted to the impending collapse of the Afghan government. Many have announced evacuation efforts in the last few hours, although Russia say they have no plans to follow suit.

The Russian state news agency reports that the Taliban promised to guarantee the safety of the Russian embassy in Kabul.

Spain’s defense ministry says it has not yet begun evacuating Spanish nationals and Afghan staff including translators who are expected to be flown out alongside its citizens, but was speeding up its plans.

Germany however is sending military transport planes to Kabul to begin the evacuation of its embassy staff Monday.

The rapid implosion of the Afghanistan military has sort of been blowing some holes in the recently established Republican narrative of 300,000 brave Afghani soldiers who would totally be able to hold their own against the Taliban but for lack of US air support. The biggest mistake during the withdrawal appears to have been not blowing up all the bridges and highways to block the army’s retreat.

Frankly, though, I really can’t blame anyone for not wanting to be the last soldier to die for a lost cause.

Read the book and watched the Hulu adaptation. Margaret Atwood implied it was the Reagan Administration which inspired her to write the book.

I’ve also read her sequel “The Testaments,” on life in Gilead some twenty years later, and the forces working both within and without the regime to bring it down.

‘We’ve Seen This Before’: Margaret Atwood on ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ and How History Repeats Itself (Rolling Stone, May 19, 2021, on the Trump Administration, the show, her sequel book, &c)

I read The Testaments which incorporates the TV series into the narrative. The “Testaments” are the voices of Aunt Lydia, Aunt Victoria (June’s daughter Hannah/Agnes who was adopted by a Gilead family) and Nicole/Daisy/Jade raised in Canada.

The ending is…

However 50 years on and Vietnam today at least is a functioning nation which to some degree has evolved so its people have a chance at a decent life.

I do not think the same thing will be said of Afghanistan.

Communism was a 19th century religion that looked to progress and technology; the Taliban are ensconced in 7th century ideology. But the communist religion could be as brutal as anything the Taliban create: let’s not forget what Pol Pot did to Cambodia — and let’s not forget if it weren’t for our dragging Cambodia fully into our conflict, Pol Pot would never have had the opportunity to commit his crimes.

My question, though, are the warlords of Afghanistan submitting to the Taliban — or is it a live and let live philosophy?

Diverting the topic because you mentioned “toe,” my fourth phalax on my left foot is considerably better this morning. The swelling is way down, and the terrible bruising is starting to fade.

Apparently I didn’t break it, I just jammed it really badly somehow asleep in bed a couple nights ago.

I kicked a tree root last week and/or stepped on a dog bone in the middle of the night and my left foot has been swollen and hurts to put pressure on since. Think it’s a minor stress fracture - got one about 10 years ago in the same place…took weeks to recover. Ordered a post-op walking boot from Amazon on Friday (should be here today) so I can walk the dogs better. Glad I’m home office as I fly to Hawaii in three weeks to go surfing.

The independent Russian news agency Interfax reports that Russia is “ready to cooperate” with Afghanistan’s interim government.

The interim administration is widely expected to be led by Taliban leaders,.

A spokesman for the embassy, which earlier said there was no immediate need to evacuate the Afghan capital, also said Russia was taking part in political contacts in Afghanistan.

However, the Russian Foreign Ministry has confirmed that Moscow does not yet recognise the Taliban as Afghanistan’s lawful authority.

Omar* is in Kabul with his wife and children. He worked as a wartime interpreter for US and allied forces for five years - but now, he says, the US “has turned its back” on him.

“The president of the United States said, ‘As you stood with us, we will stand with you’. So right now, where are they?”

Omar applied for a US visa in 2016, but was rejected for what the US embassy called a “lack of faithful and valuable service”.

Now, Omar believes the Taliban’s punishment will be worse for translators, despite a spokesman saying there will be “no revenge”.

“There’s no mercy for the linguists,” he says. “The Taliban has said before, interpreters were the eyes and ears of the Americans - so the punishment will be different for us.

“As an interpreter I saved many American lives. So, they’ve really left me behind. Now I’m about to be killed, as is my family.”

re: #82 JOE 🥓

If your police don’t follow the Peelian principles:

1. To prevent crime and disorder, as an alternative to their repression by military force and severity of legal punishment.
2. To recognise always that the power of the police to fulfill their functions and duties is dependent on public approval of their existence, actions and behaviour, and on their ability to secure and maintain public respect.
3. To recognise always that to secure and maintain the respect and approval of the public means also the securing of the willing co-operation of the public in the task of securing observance of laws.
4. To recognise always that the extent to which the co-operation of the public can be secured diminishes proportionately the necessity of the use of physical force and compulsion for achieving police objectives.
5. To seek and preserve public favour, not by pandering to public opinion, but by constantly demonstrating absolutely impartial service to law, in complete independence of policy, and without regard to the justice or injustice of the substance of individual laws, by ready offering of individual service and friendship to all members of the public without regard to their wealth or social standing, by ready exercise of courtesy and friendly good humour, and by ready offering of individual sacrifice in protecting and preserving life.
6. To use physical force only when the exercise of persuasion, advice and warning is found to be insufficient to obtain public co-operation to an extent necessary to secure observance of law or to restore order, and to use only the minimum degree of physical force which is necessary on any particular occasion for achieving a police objective.
7. To maintain at all times a relationship with the public that gives reality to the historic tradition that the police are the public and that the public are the police, the police being only members of the public who are paid to give full-time attention to duties which are incumbent on every citizen in the interests of community welfare and existence.
8. To recognise always the need for strict adherence to police-executive functions, and to refrain from even seeming to usurp the powers of the judiciary of avenging individuals or the State, and of authoritatively judging guilt and punishing the guilty.
9. To recognise always that the test of police efficiency is the absence of crime and disorder, and not the visible evidence of police action in dealing with them.

Then they are not police, they are an occupying army.

The BBC’s Yalda Hakim was contacted on air by Taliban negotiator Suhail Shaheen to tell the people of Kabul “their lives are safe”.

“We assure the people in Afghanistan, particularly in the city of Kabul, that their properties, their lives are safe - there will be no revenge on anyone,” he told her.

“We are the servants of the people and of this country.”

A discussion is underway about the rise of cryptocurrencies and the Nixon administration abandoning the gold standard in 1971
The Nixon administration announced 50 years ago today that the US would no longer exchange dollars held by foreign governments for gold.

#wtfhappenedin1971

Thread:

We’ll skip the part that the fixed price of gold in the USA and the inability to trade gold by Americans was causing a raid by other countries on our gold reserves.

We’ll also skip the part where “panics” (the word used before “depression”) were often deeper and sharper under the gold standard.

In all the hullabaloo about Afghanistan, this bit of news went under the radar:

Canadians will be heading to the polls next month, two years earlier than scheduled, after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau triggered a snap election on Sunday after weeks of speculation that a vote was coming.

Trudeau, whose Liberal Party secured a 157-seat minority government in the last election in 2019, is hoping to get back a majority in the face of what analysts have described as a divided and weak opposition Conservative Party of Canada.

“Canadians will … go to the polls on September 20,” Trudeau told reporters in the capital, Ottawa, after he visited the residence of Governor General Mary Simon to ask her to dissolve parliament. Trudeau said Simon had accepted his request, which triggers the election campaign.

“In this pivotal, consequential moment, who wouldn’t want a say? Who wouldn’t want a chance to help decide where our country goes from here? Canadians need to choose how we finish the fight against COVID-19 and build back better,” Trudeau said, rebuffing criticism that he was calling an election during the pandemic.

Another lying Republican. Quelle surprise.

Taliban commanders are saying they have taken control of the Afghan presidential palace. There is no confirmation of this from what remains of the Afghan government at this point, Reuters is reporting.

The Afghan president, Ashraf Ghani, has, by all accounts so far, fled the country earlier today.

Taliban leaders had been understood to be at the 19th-century palace in Kabul for negotiations but now claim to have taken it over.

2 Thessalonians 3:10

10 For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat.

Memories of America before Social Security.

Grandma Bacon volunteered to work at the town Poor House. Back then you had to sell everything you had and in return you were required to sign a contract stating you would work every day even if you were sick or infirm to receive any form of assistance.

When people had strokes, wound up bedridden they were in violation of the contract and in good Xtian love they were denied food and water by the Overseer who answered to the good Gawd Fearing Xtian Men who sat on the Poor House Corporate Board.

Couldn’t work, sick in bed. No food. You starved to death.

Grandma made the fatal mistake of sneaking pie slices to the infirm…until she was caught by the Overseer and banned from working there. Grandma was also blacklisted and denied employment anywhere in the Roaring 20s. She turned to taking in boarders which is all a blacklisted Bolshevik was allowed to do and of course good Xtian people could not board at her house.

Which turned to the advantage of the CIO when John L Lewis started massive recruitment drives for the Steelworkers, Electrical, Mineworkers and Autoworkers Union organizing committees. Grandpa and Grandma’s home was the command center for union organizing. So quite naturally those fine Xtian capitalists didn’t like that too much so they sent their thugs called the Coal & Iron police to Grandma’s house where the thugs with the assistance of the County Sheriff and local police continually beat union organizers and terrorized Dad.

Ended in 1935 when the Democrats took control of the Pennsylvania legislature and Governorship and they banned the Coal & Iron Police.

The Coal & Iron Police of the 1920s are the Proud Boys, 3 %ers and other assorted assholes of today.

The last reports were that the US embassy would be closed by Tuesday and was currently being staffed by a skeleton-level team. The situation on the ground is not completely clear.

There is “pandemonium” at the airport, according to CNN’s reporter in Afghanistan, Clarissa Ward, just now. The road to the airport is completely choked with traffic as Afghan people desperately try to reach it to take or seek a flight out.

This could account for the so-far unconfirmed and isolated reports of gunfire - ie chaos in the approach to the airport and frustration boiling over.

There is no such definition as a “Gold Star Mother-In-Law.”

Moreover, if such a designation actually existed, it would not define grandchildren.

This smells like more conservative stolen valour.

As for hellholes, I lost my father in the Vietnam War. I think getting out of Vietnam was the single best military and political decision we made in that war.

If you did lose grandchildren in Afghanistan as a mother-in-law, I can sympathise with your loss. Let’s not lose any more grandchildren.

In December 2016, the Donald Trump administration announced that Crowley would be appointed a deputy national security advisor for the National Security Council. She withdrew a month later following reports that she had plagiarized portions of her 2012 book What the (Bleep) Just Happened? and her 2000 Ph.D. dissertation.

..snip…

In the mid-1990s Crowley wrote a regular column for the New York Post.

…snip…

On July 16, 2019, President Trump announced Crowley’s appointment as Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs in the Treasury Department.

…snip…

Crowley has on multiple occasions spread conspiracy theories that President Barack Obama was a secret Muslim. In 2010, after Obama defended the right to build the Islamic community center Park51 in lower Manhattan near the World Trade Center, Crowley suggested he had dual loyalties to Islam and the United States, and asked, “How could he….support the enemy?” In 2013, she said that the Muslim Brotherhood had “found an ally” in Obama.

…snip…

In 2015, she shared an article which described Obama as an “Islamic community organizer” who was “conforming US policy to Islam and Sharia.”
