This is among the songs I love most of all.

Founding member Neil Finn has revived and rebuilt his seminal band Crowded House, which now includes his sons Liam and Elroy Finn. We’re honored to host them for this performance of their classic tune “Don’t Dream It’s Over.” Their new album “Dreamers Are Waiting” is out now, stick around to see them perform a song from the album on tonight’s Late Show! #Colbert #Music #CrowdedHouse

All of this would have happened without the Fairness Doctrine repeal. It did not and wouldn’t now apply to cable television or the internet.

It might not have gone down exactly the same, in the same way, in the same time frame, but it would have happened all the same.

It seems to me that the Fairness Doctrine should have been extended to cover cable news, and then later on at least to anything on the internet that purports to report news.

We have enough data on the serious consequences of unchecked propaganda passed off as news to justify reform.

Of course, any new Fairness Doctrine would become the #1 target for the right to turn it into a wingnut Ministry of Truth, so there are no easy fixes.

Each live performance should be different. One of the things I didn’t care for KISS for though was that they tried very hard to make their live shows sound exactly like the records. I’m sure others do too but I’d prefer a lot more “wiggle room” in the performances.

Yeah, losing the Fairness Doctrine wasn’t the real problem. Citizens United was a much bigger factor in the rise of bad craziness.

IMO it goes at least as far back as the Great Depression. The US political right never found a coherent answer to the policy imperatives of that era (i.e., the government needed to do whatever it took to get the economy back in gear). So they pissed and moaned about ‘that man’ (i.e., FDR) without coming up with any policies other than throwing money at their fat cats.

Everything since then has just been the GOP perfecting its brand of content-free politics of resentment.

Until now we are cursed with a GOP that, if sent back in time to the WWII era, would 99+% be active Nazi fifth columnists. To piss off liberals.

Ahhhhhhh par for the course…

California cops went on wild goose chase for purported ‘Antifa bus’ after falling for right-wing hoax

Newly unearthed government documents show that police in northern California expended resources chasing down a phantom “Antifa bus” after falling for a right-wing internet hoax.

The Guardian reports that officials in Shasta and Humboldt counties in northern California picked up on social media posts claiming that Antifa was bussing hundreds of supporters into rural parts of the state with the intent to spark civil unrest in the area.

While there were no actual Antifa busses, that didn’t stop local officials from asking the California Highway Patrol to do everything in their power to track them down.

When I was quite a bit older than 4th grade (maybe in my early 40s), my mother was shocked when I told her I didn’t believe in Noah’s Ark. I then proceeded to make it worse by blithely pointing out that I could prove before her eyes that Noah’s Ark could not have happened. All I’d need was an aquarium, some freshwater fish and some saltwater fish. “But some fish would have to die…” I finished up.

Mom was quite upset with me. Later, my dad took me aside and told me that I could not discuss “religion” with mom ever again. So no, she knows nothing about the picketing as a result.

The fact that we have people bleating about not being sheep while buying actual livestock dewormer to defend themselves against a disease they claim to be a hoax, over a freely distributed and authorized vaccine, because Fox News and Jordon Peterson said so, is so absurd that if someone pitched a script with that, they’d be laughed off as a hack and soft-blackballed from Hollywood.

Considering the parable being cited…

…we need to talk again about how these people constantly invoke sources of authority in a way that demonstrates they don’t care about the what the source of authority actually said.

It’s…perfectly consistent…to the point they’ve backed into nihilism but just won’t admit it.

They’ll cite a science guy but not really because they don’t actually read the paper, but they’ll also invoke a general mistrust of science when most scientists say the opposite of what they want to hear.

They’ll cite religion because God is the first cause and thus the last argument, but they also won’t acknowledge that they didn’t read the fucking magic book what tells you what God said.

This isn’t a belief that they hold and can be challenged, it’s a thought process in which nothing escapes the solipsism.

I agree.

I stand by my position that we’re basically dealing with the social-movement equivalent of an abusive boyfriend.

Their standard of “winning” is just us shutting up and doing what we’re told

Any method to get this result is acceptable “rhetoric.”

Pointing out their rhetoric is empty, that the argument can’t just keep recurring while they keep getting what they want, is the worst thing possible and thus they leap to “maybe you dying is the solution.”

I believe that in the original backstory for Star Wars, before the film’s success and the production of The Empire Strikes Back changed almost everything (for the better), the Emperor was meant to have been only the current one, in a long line of emperors who were all easily manipulated idiots and blowhards, and the real rulers of the Empire were the Grand Moffs and Admirals that met in that board room in the Death Star.

It sounds a lot like, before they decided to make him a Sith Lord, the Emperor was basically a Fuckface von Clownstick type.

What do you think of this analogy?

If you don’t complete a course of antibiotics to eliminate a bacterial infection, the bacteria are likely to develop resistance to the antibiotics so that that it will no longer be effective as treatment.

Requiring everyone to be vaccinated is similar to completing a course of antibiotics. If you stop early, the virus will mutate so that the vaccine will lose its effectiveness at preventing disease.

The size! Equal to a square 33.67 miles on a side. My wife and I went on a camping vacation in 1990 before we were married. We camped on the Feather River west of Chester. It’s gone now. The next night we camped at a creek north of Whiskeytown Lake, that burned out in the Redding fire. The only place from that trip that didn’t burn out is the creek at the 9000’ marker of Tioga Pass Rd.

I for one would love to hear what a wingnut or libertarian (but I repeat myself) thinks are the “rights” that you lose if you refuse to be vaccinated.

Lose your job? According to wingnuts, you don’t have a right to a job, as that’s not one of the rights enumerated in the Bill of Rights. “Pursuit of happiness” doesn’t count as that’s the DoI and thus has no bearing on your rights except when SCOTUS wants to find a loophole.

Can’t enter a business/restaurant? Again, wingnuts have been lecturing us for years that you have no right to be served by a business, which is what they love to mindlessly belch out when they want to excuse businesses refusing to do business with minority customers.

Can’t board a plane/bus/etc? See above, you have no right to any of those under the BoR.

Education, health insurance, medical care, and other items that you insist your “rights” are being infringed or even denied by your refusal to get vaccinated…are not rights by your overly narrow and bigoted view of the Constitution. Welcome to the consequences of your own actions, I’m sure you’ll be every bit as happy with the situation as those you were happy to condemn to it.

The mother is vaccinated, her adult sons weren’t. They died at age thirty-five and forty-one.

The mother has the risk factor of being elderly, but because she was vaccinated, she had a mild form of the illness and survives to bury her two anti-vax children.

Her third son died five years ago. She has no children left.

She also depended on her two sons for support, and now is left with massive medical bills, funerals, and the possible loss of her home.

This looks an awful lot like a libertarian grift.

What’s a multimillionaire tech entrepreneur to do when the private school he owns gets dragged by the media for spreading anti-vax disinformation and banning vaccinated teachers?

How does “launch an online reputation management website” strike you?

David Centner, cofounder of the Centner Academy, has announced the launch of a new tech venture: erase.com, a website that allows people to cleanse their online reputation of bad press and reviews. “Combat the Negative” is its tagline.

erase.com offers to remove negative news articles, “fake and negative online reviews,” and Google search results. The service also offers “positive reputation management” and crisis-management solutions.

Co-Owner of Anti-Vax School Launches Online Reputation Scrubbing Service (Miami New Times, August 4, 2021)

We offer effective Content Removal & Reputation Management Solutions designed to combat the spread of negative content.

True, but they’ve been mostly dealing with puff pieces about hurt fee-fees and hypothetical scenarios. In about a month or so, when anti-vaxxers start getting their walking papers for refusing to get the jab, we’ll get tear-soaked articles about how Little Johnny is gonna die because his daddy lost his health insurance when he lost his job. Or how poor Cathy had this big night planned out to celebrate achieving her life’s goal, but the restaurant that she and her anti-vaxxer friends made reservations at turned her away because she refused to wear a mask or show proof of vaccination. And let’s not forget the brave anti-vaxxers who staged a walkout and protest at the local “Big Corporation,” who we must view as patriotic Americans for inconveniencing people to protest their “rights.”

Realistic answer is that most of that equipment belonged to the (former) Afghan National Army, and even that stuff is largely composed of tech one or two generations behind what we’re fielding. And the Taliban is largely a force of conscripts and guerilla fighters, they have neither the need or the training to use most of the really interesting bits of kit more than once or twice. Humvees and M4s will get plenty of use until they break down, but items like drones and attack aircraft are gonna go to waste.

So, there was an emergency Foreign Ministers’ meeting at NATO on Friday, and the Secretary General had a press conference (transcript here).

Some Paris-based CNN rep had the following People Are Saying non-question that would make Newsmax proud:

Melissa Bell (CNN Paris): Secretary General, thank you very much. I wanted to ask you first of all, whether you agreed with the statement that’s been made these last few days so this was the greatest debacle in the history of NATO, also whether you don’t think that what’s happened these last few days is really a nail in the coffin of Article Five that Allies can go into battle together, but once they don’t withdraw together as a coalition, NATO has a problem.

Short answer: no.

And for the military and foreign affairs twitter posters who are mad that Biden won’t admit error in the withdrawal: assuming there was error (debatable), Biden understands the press way better than they do. They are out for blood, and has been shown repeatedly in the last four-something years, the only way out is to tell them to fuck off. It’s not what you want in a society, but gotcha journalism leads to one place.

That’s actually in the novelization of Star Wars, the one ghostwritten by Alan Dean Foster. That’s how I knew the Emperor’s name was Palpatine and why his character’s appearance in the prequel trilogies came as no surprise. Also, no surprise that he was Darth Sidious….it was pretty obvious (at least to me) that Palpatine and Sidious were one and the same.

IIRC the fall of the Old Republic is the backstory of that Star Wars novel — i.e. Palpatine in that novel was the first emperor and formerly a Senator of the Old Republic (in passing, not a major plot point). So if there was a long line of mostly useless emperors, it would likely be in the SW extended universe somewhere.

I’m not sure how market forces apply to state-run facilities.

If the governor can openly defy the CDC and refuse to report data, and Republicans are already trying to perpetrate a genocide, I don’t see them having a problem suppressing that sort of information, or blowing it off when it becomes public.

Early in the pandemic, when meat-packing plants here tried to report local data on their own plants and asked for DHHS guidance, the state moved to prohibit them from reporting data (on the claim it would panic the local towns).

Democrats like Sen. Tony Vargas took up the cause to protect meat packing workers (where the fight broke out between him and my state senator over Covid-19 being a hoax right after Sen. Vargas’s father died of the disease).

Today my state senator has half a page in the county paper to rant about the University of Nebraska board of regents voting down one of its members proposals (he is running for governor under the GOP banner) to ban critical race theory across the university system. The entire column is nothing but “fear, socialism, and Democrats are the real racists” along with “sensible Western Nebraska values” (whatever the hell those are).

I don’t care if I get absolutely annihilated in an election next year running against him; I am not going to let him run unopposed.

So in extremely local news, a birthday card came in the mail from a person in Omaha regarding my late father’s upcoming birthday.

The group Honor and Remember here started a mail campaign to mark the birthdays of military members in combat.

The card is handwritten and personal (along with a bit of patriotic prose).

It ends, “As you remember his birthday I hope the memories of your times together bring you comfort. Please know that your Dad is not forgotten and that we are praying for you.”

I’m not really the prayer type, but I will drop a letter in the mail in response to the nice woman who wrote this to thank her for her empathy and consideration.

They want to find ready acceptance for lab-grown meat? Want to get to sell this shit by the ton to consumers every week? Market it with names like “Hippie Puncher” or “PETA Bane.” Put tags on it that say “PETA Disapproved” and “100% Hippie Free.” Then get your marketing campaign out there to tell the legions of knuckle-draggers that every time they cook up some Tyson 100% lab-grown chicken nuggets for the kids or fire up the grill on July 4th to roast some Oscar Mayer 100% Lab Beef hot dogs, PETA screams in impotent rage that nobody’s listening to them anymore. McD’s can readily declare that all their menu is now PETA-unfriendly and every Big Mac you buy is money being denied to hippies.

Within a year, any opposition to lab-grown meat will have disappeared and eating a burger using it will be seen as a patriotic act.

My opinion, which I know everyone is dying to hear, is that this will be a sort of niche ethical market until it gets cheaper than real meat, at which point McDonalds and Burger King and every other chain that relies on selling fast cheap burgers is going to jump on it, because they can’t afford not to. Plus all the cheap frozen stuff at the grocery store. I assume the beef industry will put up an enormous scare campaign (rather ironically considering what kind of drugs they shoot the cows up with and what parts of the animal they use), but money talks. Sort of like the coal industry: they can scream and threaten and bribe all they want, but once natural gas was cheaper, bye bye coal.

This is going to have big knock-on effects, because it’s not just less cows: almost half of US corn production is feed grain for animals. That’s going to take a huge hit. Plus, almost half of US corn production is for fuel ethanol (I was surprised by this, but it’s USDA statistics); electric cars are going to get cheaper than the equivalent ICE cars in the next few years, so that production is probably going to get blown away. All the corn we think about is in a narrow slice of the graph called “other”. (Source: here) I think 70 percent of the soybean crop is for feed as well, but not a lot goes to beef cattle.

You can see a scenario in the next decade where a lot of the agricultural production of the midwest is gone. I’m sure the state governments will demand that Uncle Sucker buy up 8 billion bushels of corn to dump in the ocean, but I don’t think this will fly.

Just like pricey restaurants now boast about their beef being “grass-fed” or pork “corn-fed,” they’ll now tell customers that all of their menu is “farm-raised” and none of it comes from a lab. Cooking shows will begin to treat meat that we’d otherwise see discounted down at Wal-Mart like they’re prized delicacies because they have a “unique” quality (taste, smell, look, etc) that you can’t find in grown meat. The biggest victim of all this will be the factory farms which won’t be able to compete with grown meat but will still be too controversial to jump readily onto the “real” meat bandwagon.

Well, Nebraska is the number one popcorn grower in the world. The world can always use more popcorn.

The governor’s attempt to misdirect the conservation donations from the state lottery to buying ethanol pumps for gas stations in California to undermine California’s electric car initiative blew up in his face.

Plus land here is good for growing other things like wheat, barley, sorghum, sunflowers, and hay. (Crop rotation here in the Panhandle seems to go as corn, wheat, sorghum, and sunflowers.)

I imagine there will always be a market for hoof-grown beef, but once prices of artifically-grown meats come down to the prices of the original recipe steer, those products will become commercially competitive.

And if they come in lower? Hoo boy that would really undermine cattle ranching.

Tom Flynn, Giant of American Freethought, Has Died at Age 66 (Obituary at the Center for Inquiry)

The world has lost a towering figure of American freethought, a man who was both on the cutting edge of secular humanist thought, as well as the foremost caretaker of its rich history. The entire Center for Inquiry family is anguished by the sudden and unexpected death of our colleague, teacher, and friend Tom Flynn at age 66.

Tom held numerous leadership roles during his more than thirty years with the Center for Inquiry, most recently as editor of Free Inquiry magazine, director of the Robert Green Ingersoll Birthplace Museum and the Freethought Trail, and former executive director of the Council for Secular Humanism.

But this collection of titles does not nearly convey the plainer truth, which is that Tom Flynn was the beating heart of the Center for Inquiry and indeed the wider freethought movement.

A stark rationalist and staunch atheist if ever there was one, Tom was nonetheless brimming with enthusiasm, curiosity, bold ideas, and perhaps most of all, humor. He had a deep love and encyclopedic knowledge of freethought history and devoted himself to the preservation and rediscovery of American freethought’s great untold stories.

At the same time, he was a true visionary whose future-focused ideas about religion, atheism, equality, and the existential crises we face as a global civilization were once considered radical but now seem prescient. He was a virtuoso of the written word, penning not only countless articles and essays but also science fiction novels and the defiantly revelatory book The Trouble with Christmas.Tom as “Anti-Claus”

Assuming grown meat can be made competitive or even cheaper than farmed meat, then the biggest advantage the latter will still have (at least immediately) will be that the former is really better suited to the processed meat market. I don’t know if it’s possible grown certain cuts of meat, particularly those involving bones that are called for in more traditional recipes. And there are just some purists who would never accept something like barbequed or smoked meats that were artificial in nature.

Who knew being hateful Christian diques is bad for business?

Alabama’s Capital Panics After Pro-LGBTQ+ Ordinance Fails (The Advocate, a pro-LGBT+ publication, August 23, 2021)

Montgomery, the capital of Alabama and a center of the African-American civil rights struggle, is reeling after the city council last week rejected an anti-discrimination ordinance codifying protections for race, religion, gender, marital status, and LGBTQ+ identity.

City leaders are concerned the council’s failure will encourage more companies to avoid doing business in Montgomery and instead choose seemingly more progressive places like Birmingham, the state’s largest city and a place that enacted pro-LGBTQ+ protections in 2017. The state of Alabama has no specific anti-discrimination protections for LGBTQ+ residents and, while the Supreme Court banned anti-LGBTQ+ workplace discrimination last year, bias is still legal in areas like housing, banking, and public accomodations (sic).

Councilwoman Marche Johnson told the Montgomery Advertiser that “we are stunting are own growth.” Johnson said at least five major corporations have rejected placing workers or offices in Montgomery just since May.

The business climate will likely only worsen following the council’s decision, where the proposed ordinance failed on a 4-5 vote. Council president Charles Jinright voted against it, claiming it wasn’t needed and that the city faced “more pressing issues.”

The Montgomery Chamber of Commerce supported the ordinance and said it bring business, employment, and tourism to the city. Officials also believe the ordinance’s failure discourages students from choosing Montgomery for their higher education; the city of 200,000 has seven colleges and universities.

A comment on Friendly Atheist, where a commentator noticed the right-wing lie machine already moving the goalposts with a new lie regarding the FDA approval of the Pfizer vaccine.

But now it’s gotten full approval, and the right wing misinformation machine is in full swing. I want to debunk the first argument I’ve seen in case anyone else runs into it. The argument goes “it’s not full approval, it’s just an extension of the emergency use authorization (EUA), you can see it explicitly stated on page 13 of the FDA letter”.

That’s both true and not true. I looked into this and it took all of about ten seconds to figure out what was going on. At the same time the FDA gave full approval to the vaccine (under it’s new product name, Comirnaty) to be used on people aged 16 and above, it also extended the EUA for the vaccine to be used on people between the ages of 12 and 15 because they weren’t ready to give full authorization to that age group yet. It issued letters for both of those events, and the page 13 reference is for the EUA extension. The full approval for 16 years and up letter doesn’t even have a page 13.

There’s a lot of marginal and unimproved land around the world that provides meat for market at quite low cost, comparatively speaking. Hill farms in Scotland, Mid-Western high prairie in the US, steppe in Asia, the Australian outback, Alpine meadows, the list goes on. The key is cheap land and lots of it providing limited fodder for a low density population of hardy meat animals like, say, bison or mammoths (I wish).

Vat-grown or artificial meats require energy to grow, usually electrical energy of some kind and right now the world is burning way too much fossil carbon to generate electricity as it is. Reindeer farmers in Finland’s northern forests don’t burn a lot of electricity.

The study they quote says that culture production takes about 40% less energy per 1000kg of meat than conventional European farming (here). The study they quote says that culture production takes about 40% less energy per 1000kg of meat than conventional European farming (here).

The issue is that to create “lab-grown” meat or similar cultured foods takes high-grade energy i.e. electricity and that means more fossil fuel being burned to generate that electricity, right now and well into the future. Hill farms and steppe herding don’t involve much fossil fuel consumption even if the amount of meat produced per hectare is low. Intensive-agriculture production of meat does use fossil fuels but even then a lot of the energy input per kilo of ranched meat is solar in nature, photosynthesis providing pasturage and even corn for finish-feedlot operations.

Speaking of herding, the sperm whale population worldwide has made a big comeback over the past few decades and is now ripe for harvesting…

ObMobyDick: “Look out, it’s coming right for us!”

The overwhelming majority of ranches are not Swiss-style valley farms or marginal steppe herding (remember, Nebraska is a steppe). The scale of industrial ranching uses fuquetonnes of electricity.

A friend who lives in Japan is always looking out for the longest “wall of kanji” he can find — Japanese Jouhou kanji characters with no intervening hiragana. It’s usually the name of a local government bureau (prefectural and city names are always good for three or even four characters to start with) or a new regulation of some sort. IIRC I think his record was 14 kanji in a row but it’s been a while since he announced a new discovery.

I go more for consonant density in German rather than word length, my most recent favorite is the word for mandatory vaccination: Impfpflicht, or a swarm of fishes: Fischschwarm, for flop sweat Angstschweiss; and having to shower before getting in the pool: Duschpflicht.
And the word for a fat droplet, probably my favorite: Fetttröpfchen

Going in the opposite direction, here’s a little word puzzle for you — find a five-letter word in English with four vowels, all different. Slang words are not permitted (so ‘outie’ doesn’t count).

The only example I can think of that fits this requirement is quite a common word, surprisingly enough.

got a problem with a solar panel

i send this inquiry:

Connecting a multimeter reads 16 volts.

Connecting to our solar controller or even to a ZN09 wattmeter, the voltage drops to zero and there are no amps.

they reply:

Could you please use the multimeter to test the voltage and current of the solar panel, then provide us with a few pictures that can show the test results?

with my inquiry right below.

to be charitable, they need pictures, which couldnt possibly prove anything.
or the never read my three line inquiry

We have a winnah! Even more interesting, it doesn’t contain the most common vowel, ‘e’ which causes some people who have tried to solve this puzzle to get confused or distracted.

Next, find a thirteen letter English word that only has four different letters in it. It’s not hyphenated or a made-up name and, although not that common, is still used in modern English.

re: #240 Dangerman

Sounds like something in the panel has gone high-resistance and is thus current-limiting the output. A high-impedance voltmeter pulls very little current so it shows a potential of 16V across the output. Anything that tries to draw more than a few microamps from the panel like your solar controller or your ‘power meter’ pulls the potential down to effectively zero. You’d probably get different readings from different voltmeters depending on their construction.

If it’s an individual cell that’s gone high-impedance then the entire panel is fucked. It might be the final connection to the array that’s problematic but I can’t diagnose that for you.

Best guess? “If it’s ‘free,’ then there’s obviously something wrong it. If it worked, then they would be charging for it!” The idea is to play on people’s distrust of anything advertised as “free,” that there’s usually some hidden “catch” that secretly jacks up the price.

That’s always the frustrating part. Like with my ISP over the weekend; I get why they don’t trust me. I’m not an expert in their field, and even if I was, I don’t work for them and don’t have access to the information they do. But at the same time, it’s like, I have physical evidence that what you’re telling me is bullshit, and I’d like you to at least take me seriously, even if you still need to verify things with your own equipment. Don’t just tell me, “Buy our expensive equipment,” and close the call.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro. We’re about to embark on yet another heat wave, which will help dry out those areas that are dealing with flooding. But that’s not what has me pissed off.

It’s that there’s a GOPer running for governor in NJ who thinks Gov. Murphy’s mandates for vaccinations for teachers somehow gives students the right to opt out of masking.

The dumbassery and fact-free bulkshit from GOP is never ending. Students under 12 can’t get vaccinations, so their only protection against covid comes from others being vaccinated and masking. There’s no other way. Getting tested regularly means you’re willing to get your kid jabbed with needles or swabs deep into their nasal passages on a weekly/biweekly basis? It’s easier to just mask. Sheesh.

Teachers can opt to vaccinate or get regular testing.

NYC teachers don’t have that option. They have to get vaccinated. Teachers can still get tested regularly, and one teacher I know made an interesting observation. They don’t necessarily want their superiors to know their vaccination status, and it’s important to know if you’re covid free by testing, especially since he has kids at home who can’t get vaccinated. So, he’ll be vaccinated, and get tested regularly, just to be sure that he’s not exposing anyone else to covid (including casa lawhawk).

All of these fuckers on the right braying about their rights being undermined seem to ignore everyone’s freedom to avoid getting covid, and that part of being in a civil society means doing things for the greater good. The greatest good we can hope for is getting everyone vaccinated to stomp out covid and to ease burden on hospitals and health care workers, and that will do more to supercharge the economy than rushing back before people are vaccinated and when people aren’t masking.

The states with the highest covid outbreaks are the GOP states that have done the least to contain covid. They’re actively trying to kill people. There’s no other way around it. And they just don’t fucking care.

That’s because they don’t recognize the Right to Life as a fundamental right. In their minds, their freedom to do whatever the fuck they want trumps other people’s desire to live. See, e.g., their ardent support for: War; policemen playing judge, jury, and executioner; and the death penalty for as many crimes as they can plausibly posit warrant death.

So, one of the reasons some folks are hesitant to vaccinate is a fear of needles. I get that. My brother has fainted after getting needle sticks.

And yet, the fear of intubation and dying from covid19 should be more empowering to get vaccinated.

But can’t look forward to reveal
Look to the time when I’ll live
Fed through the tube that sticks in me
Just like a wartime novelty
Tied to machines that make me be
Cut this life off from me

It’s straight out of Metallica’s One. Unable to do anything and potentially wishing for death because it’s better than the unbearable pain of suffocating to death because you didn’t get vaccinated. Potentially dying alone because hospitals can’t allow others in and that ICU facilities typically have limits on access.

This is Ben Shapiro logic, if diabetes and cancer were contagious, we would be.

Yeah, that was my thought. I can’t catch cancer or diabetes from the person sitting next to me on the bus. If that were the case I would have diabetes since my wife is a type 1 juvenile diabetic for over 55 years and we have been together for 22 years. I would have acquired it by now.

But Ben is good with these sort of polemic arguments that leave out key details and nuances: you have to be very careful. People like that barge in, set off a mass of rhetorical flash-bombs, make their “point” and then leave gloating triumphantly.

Wait, we’ve relocated over 60,000 people. The same talking heads who were claiming we couldn’t move 50,000 by the end of the month? We’ve already moved that many and can now move out more than 10k a day.

What are the limiting factors here?

GOP refusal to allow resettlement in the US because they’re afraid that people desperate for a better life are coming here and they aren’t white Christians. They’re racist/nativists, who are a funhouse mirror version of the very Taliban they claim are awful/evil.

Earlier this month, United Airlines announced it would require all 67,000 of its U.S. employees to get vaccinated within five weeks of FDA approval or Oct. 25, whichever comes first. Considering that a significant percentage of all Americans are obese, including many of these self styled couch commandoes and chairborne rangers who cosplay as fascist fuckers with Proud Boys and Oathkeepers, this isn’t the argument they think.

Obesity is one risk factor, but hardly the only one.

Nearly half of all Americans have preexisting conditions, many of which can add to covid risks. Asthma. COPD. Cancer. RSV.

Not that these fuckers care. They just cherry pick nonsense, ignoring that covid doesn’t care about anything except spreading to its next victim. It doesn’t care about your politics or your wishful thinking that ivermectin keeps you safe, or that masks inhibit your freedumb.

The bolded is why all these “natural immunity” assholes cause me to start grinding my teeth. They’re gambling on the off-chance that that cough they had last year means they’re permanently protected, some deluded enough to believe that they’ve even got better immunity than those who’ve received the vaccines. But they’re not just gambling with their own lives, they’re gambling with the lives of others for no other reason than to appease their own foolish pride.

Also, “natural” immunity tends strongly to be geared towards the variant that you got infected with, so it takes less change in the next variant for it to be able to infect you. I know that at least the mRNA vaccines offer a slightly wider area it protects against.

VAERS data can be downloaded. I did. But unless you build your own relational database its a mess. One list is cases to serial numbers. Then another is serial numbers to vaccine. Then you have data previous to any attempt to filter for any other cause. So after all that its still a mess.

Once they dispensed with the turret and just put the 152mm gun in a fixed casemate, they had a real winner, the Zveroboi, the Big Cat Killer.

A shell that big didn’t even need to penetrate the armor, the force of the explosion would kill or incapacitate the crew.

Not that these fuckers care. They just cherry pick nonsense, ignoring that covid doesn’t care about anything except spreading to its next victim. It doesn’t care about your politics or your wishful thinking that ivermectin keeps you safe, or that masks inhibit your freedumb.

It’s another version of reactionary search-and-replace. They’re not using “comorbidity” or any specific kind thereof in the way the rest of us are using the words.

Either a comorbidity means a death was inevitable, or a comorbidity is indicative ofa character flaw that is the actual cause of death. The point either way is that they are entitled to neither care nor act.

All of this is just imposing hierarchy on a non-hierarchical thing because that’s what they do to everything: declare themselves a priori superior and their inferiors unworthy of life on their own terms. The disease is just another opportunity to prove that they are better—more healthy, more moral, more smart—and they’re dying and maiming themselves rather than admit they’re wrong.

And it’s really important to understand that they’re not dying for a cause, heading toward death to achieve an end. They are dying because they imagine themselves entitled not to die.

I don’t know how many here have seen the Norwegian film The King’s Choice, but much to my delight, this scene was on YouTube. This is the scene where the Oscarsborg Fortress sinks the German heavy cruiser Blücher in the opening hours of the invasion of Norway in April 1940. This bit of heroism was done by a bunch of cadets under the command of Colonel Birger Eriksen.

The sinking of Blücher - The King’s Choice (2016)

The only thing the film makers apparently missed was when Colonel Birger quipped, “Either I will be decorated, or I will be court-martialed. Fire!” as he gave the order to open fire on the Blücher.

re: #257 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

My neighbour the VA nurse has acquired a watch chicken, a Rhode Island Red rooster. Get anywhere near her yard and the rooster acts like an alarm bell dog.

She’s keeping the rooster as a pet: It is in a fancy wire enclosure with a two-storey house, toys, landscaping, &c.

Better hope she doesn’t add any guinea fowl or peacocks.

Life in prison? For stealing a couple of thousand dollars’ worth of material possessions and damaging a car? What the fuck is wrong with these “law and order” type fuckfaces?

There aren’t lockers where he swims? And why the fuck did he leave a gun in the car, locked or otherwise? I’m a rural Arizonan and I find that infuriating. To me it is ceding control of your weapon, as cars are clearly not secure.

not a life sentence

Like, I can hack anything less than a transfusion peripheral vein catheter or any needle shorter than 65 mm….

The needle in the pic is an 18 gauge “draw” needle used to fill the syringe. The injection needle is a 23 gauge 1 inch (.6mm x 25mm).

Is this just me, or does this have the scent of classical Chinese, DPRK and Soviet propaganda?

Once you are in control and the one trying to maintain garrisons you *want* those roads and infrastructure since it makes your government look good and aids your ability to maintain control and extract money from those areas.
